RUGBY STARS IN THE MAKING SonnySonny -Bill McAndrew, a 1515 -yearyear -old from Glentunnel, has made an impressive debut as the starting No 10 for Christchurch Boys’ Boys’ High School's first XV rugby team. Despite being in year 11 and not expecting to secure a top position in his first season, he has started three matches this year, showcasing his skills and dedication. CBHS head coach Pete Chaplin praised Sonny-Bill's eagerness to improve, and if he continues to develop, he may join the ranks of legendary players like All Blacks Andrew Mehrtens and Dan Carter. Sonny moved from Darfield High School to Boys High to further his rugby playing opportunities after playing rugby for Selwyn Rugby Club as a junior and Sheffield Rugby’s combined team. His parents Pete and Jodie McAndrew are proud of his achievements and say, “Sonny was given an opportunity that he decided to take, very different to what he is used to from playing
country rugby. We are proud he has made the first XV. He is just our boy, out there doing what he loves - playing rugby and making new mates.” Brothers Gus and Jimmy Ferguson are making history by playing together for the St Bedes first XV. This is a rare achievement in New Zealand school rugby and has been attributed to their family's strong rugby lineage and the hard work of the boys. Parents Tom and Rachel Ferguson are proud of their boys. “It’s about time really, it’s taken three generations for any of the Ferg’s to make it. It’s purely down to the boy’s hard work and dedication,” says Tom. Until recently, the brothers had been playing all their rugby for Sheffield Rugby Club.
