LOCAL SKIERS SELECTED FOR CHAMPS IN AUSTRIA Two local lads, Joe Cookson (17) from Hororata and Hamish Henderson (17) from Springfield, have been competing on the New Zealand Junior Freeride Tour for the last five years and recently qualified for the Freeride Junior World Champs in Kappl, Austria in January 2025. Joe’s mum Lucy says, “They have been lucky enough to have been involved in the GRITT camps, run by elite Freeride Athletes. These camps have been held at both Mt
Olympus and Broken River for the last few years and they help kids such as Joe and Hamish with specialised coaching. Many of Selwyn’s young aspiring freeride skiers participate in these camps, and they are open to any skier between the age of 12-18.” Both boys are members at local ski clubs. Hamish grew up skiing at Broken River and Joe grew up skiing at Mt Olympus. They both became interested in competing at an early age, driven by the desire to ski as
much as possible and to meet like-minded kids. “There are six members of the NZ team. It is made up of two ski boys and two girls and one snowboard boy and girl. It is
amazing that both of the boys selected are from small Canterbury club fields as only two boys are selected nationally,” says Lucy.
