LOCAL RISING STARS Two young Malvern sisters, Amelia (12) and Elise (9) Mayberry, are heading towards stardom in the equestrian world. The talented pair have just won placings – Amelia first place and Elise third place – in the Whittaker Equine Stables Rising Star Championship at the 2024 Archibalds NZ National Jumping & Show Hunter Championship. The event is one of the most prestigious jumping and show hunter shows in New Zealand. Top equestrians from across the country compete for highly sought-after national titles over four days at the National Equestrian Centre (NEC) at McLeans Island, Canterbury. Mum Narissa Mayberry says both girls were absolutely over the moon with their wins. “They never expected to come away with podium positions. They also loved being coached by top show jump riders – Amelia was mentored by Johanna Wylaars, while Elise was mentored by Grace Percy. Being able to compete in the main oval at the National Equestrian Centre at Mcleans Island was an amazing opportunity that had both girls buzzing.” Being on the podium together was also a treat for the girls and their family. The girls thought it was hilarious getting to pop the grape juice

and spray each other with it. Narissa says they were both incredibly proud to have received podium positions. Amelia and Elise attend Bangor Pony Club where they have learned a lot, made new friends and enjoyed all types of competition. They started their competitive journey four years ago beginning with being on a lead rein over poles on the ground and are now jumping their ponies over 60-70cm high jumps. “Elise loves games, and they both enjoy attending the local A & P shows, jumping competitions, and one-day events,” says Narissa. At the event, Amelia rode Willowpark Blue Magnate and Elise rode Pablo, however the competition was the girls' last one on their current ponies. They are both moving up to new ponies and the challenges that come with building new partnerships. “Amelia would love to continue moving through the heights and getting more experience out eventing and competing,” says Narissa. “Elise is all about having a great time with her pony. She likes jumping her pony and riding with her friends. She plans to continue having fun, atten din g lessons and eventing her pony over winter.”

Amelia Mayberry placed first on her pony, Willowpark Blue Magnate in the Whittaker Equine Stables Rising Star Championship competition held recently.
