BOWLING CHAMPIONS
Congratulations to siblings Anna (16) and Evan Mangels (12) who won the Bowls Canterbury Secondary Schools Regional Pairs Championship last week in Christchurch. The Championship is a tournament-based day where students compete and play for their school in Singles or Pairs Lawn Bowls games. Bowls Canterbury Youth and Development Facilitator Erica Ayres says the secondary school singles and any combination pairs tournament was yet another hit this year. “The competitive round-robin tournament was at Morrison Ave Bowling Club where six singles and six pairs teams across nine schools played,” says Erica. “It was awesome to see students enjoying th emselves with great sportsmanship, etiquette, and a high skill level of bowls. Thank you to the club, helpers, markers, schools, and
parents for enabling our youth to participate in events like these.” The talented pair, Anna and Evan, were first introduced to bowls when they filled in for their parent’s social bowls team that plays each season for around six weeks before Christmas and six weeks in the New Year. The social bowls competition is run by the West Melton Bowling Club, as their annual fundraiser each year. Evan soon became a regular player in the team, due to his consistency and natural bowling style. The Championship tournament involved playing five other secondary school teams, Evan was the lead and Anna was the skip. The games went on time and were one hour long each. Their toughest game, they say, was against St Thomas's, which ended in a draw. They won the other four games with some close battles.
Evan says he enjoyed the day and the experience. “Some of the games had intense moments. I was surprised but really happy that we finished up winning the championship.” The tournament day was quite
competitive, which the pair didn't expect. "To compete in the tournament with my brother was fun,” says Anna. “I was happy that we got a good result that we could be proud of.”
