Mount Olympus recently hosted Tarnspiel, a social curling tournament that originally became part of the Mt Olympus event calendar in the 2011 Rugby World Cup Real New Zealand tournament. At 1800m above sea level, the tournament is known as the highest curling tournament in New Zealand. Windwhistle Winter Sports Club president Simon Driscoll says, “Tarnspiel is a fun event where everyone can have a go. It is a testament to our ski club’s spirit with members pitching in from clearing the snow from the ice, organising catering, promotion, getting everything to the tarn and then taking part.” The Tarn, where the curling takes place, is at the top of the field Main Tow, which means it can normally only be accessed by skis or snowboard. However, this year a helicopter was arranged to fly those who could not ski to the tarn. “It was really special to be able to fly people in to be part of this event. Many of the people who flew are members
who can no longer ski, they have been part of shaping the field and our club, so it was fabulous to have them up there, sharing and making memories. The helicopter does add more logistics to the day, like the need to fly a port-a-loo to the tarn and deliver 60 hamburgers and a
