Malvern Hockey is back on the map following a strong win at the National Masters tournament, held in Mount Maunganui last week. The last time Malvern Hockey won a national title was in 1987 at Collier Trophy, with three members of that team in the current 40’s Masters team; Di Te Awa (nee Weavers), Janine Topham (nee Peter) and Megan Wang (nee Yaxley). The Malvern Masters team came together in 2019, as a way to reunite former players and give thanks to all the former coaches and managers who helped make Malvern Hockey the powerhouse it was. These included Beula Jenkins, Jenkins Helen Shipley, Shipley Jenny Pearson, Pearson Adrianne Begg, Begg Judy Frahm, Frahm Donita Yaxley, Yaxley Nancy Boyes and many more that inspired the current Masters players’ love of the game.

The Malvern Women’s 40’s Masters team started their tournament on Monday, February 27th, with a hard fought game against North Harbour, scraping together a 1-0 win. Things

started to gel for the next game against Northland, and Malvern took the game comfortably 5-0. Otago was up next with a 5-0 win, guaranteeing Malvern top place in their pool and a spot in

the semi-finals against Manawatu on Friday. In typical semi-final fashion, this was a tough and physical game, ending in a 1-1 draw before going to a shoot-out. Continued on page 2….
