Last Friday and Saturday, the annual Kathmandu Coast to Coast took place in excellent conditions. The iconic multisport event saw competitors from New Zealand and overseas take on the huge 243km challenge. The
race started on the West Coast, at Kumara Beach and traversed the width of the South Island, crossing the main divide and finished on the East Coast at the Pier on New Brighton Beach. Numerous locals took part, many

The Malvern News spoke to a few local competitors: JULIA CHAMBERLAIN (One Day - Individual, Female Open 1818- 39 - 1st): “The Coast to Coast exceeded my expectations of what I thought the day would be. I found myself smiling for most of the day and genuinely having so much fun. At times when it hurt, I reminded myself of the hours put into training and that the event is so much bigger than me. The Waimakariri River holds a special place in my heart, and it was incredible to see so many familiar faces at the Gorge Bridge yelling and cheering thank you all so much. Also, thank you to my family and friends for following me from West to East in a day.” SAM KING (Two(Two- Day - Individual, Male Open 1818- 39 - 3rd): “After catching Covid for the first time in early January (four weeks before race day), leading into the race I was feeling very flat and apprehensive if starting
the race would even be a wise idea. So I did an ECG and blood tests the week before to ensure I wasn’t making any mistakes. Day 1 went well, myself and two others broke away from the lead bunch with 50km to go in the first cycle stage. At this point, we managed to hold a gap of 3 minutes into the Mountain Run.
