Gus McGirr from Hororata has a passion for military items and their history. His interest started when he was about twelve years old when he used to listen to war stories from his Grandad. It was around the same time that he came in contact with lots of badges from the war, which he thought were really neat, and sparked the interest he has today. Gus has collected numerous military items off Trade Me and via word of mouth, which has built up his collection of mainly day-to-day personal objects,
including tents, uniforms and weaponry items. “Many items are becoming hard to get a hold of now, as people are donating them to museums, which is great as these pieces must be looked after and cherished for future generations,” Gus commented. In the last 5-6 years, Gus has organised many military displays at different events throughout the South Island, including the Air Show at Wanaka, Classic Fighters in Blenheim, Vintage Fest 2022 at Lincoln and our local Wheels and Wings. knows a great group of people which share the same interest that he can call on to bring additional items for the interactive displays if required. “There are many women who also share my passion for history and participate in the displays,” Gus continued. Gus sets up a campsite display at the events, which helps people get the feel of what it was like in the war for those serving.
“I thoroughly enjoy researching the history behind items I have, and think it’s important to keep history alive passing knowledge on to people. The interactive displays have been very popular at shows and events, which is very pleasing,” Gus concluded. It is by word of mouth that these displays become a reality, so feel free to spread the word or get in touch with Gus if you would like a display at an upcoming event.
