THIRD TIME LUCKY After being postponed twice in the past few years due to Covid the Hororata community is hoping it will be third time lucky for the Hororata Mechanical Swap Meet scheduled for Saturday, January 29th. Held in the Hororata Domain since 2010, this event attracts about ﬁfty sellers and approximately 500 – 800 visitors as well. This Meet was started by a couple of blokes, John and Dave, who got fed up with searching for mechanical parts amongst household goods at Swap Meets, they wanted a dedicated mechanical event so they created their own. In 2020 John and Dave handed over the event to the Hororata Community Trust, but they still remain involved in helping run it. “The Swap Meet is a longstanding event in Hororata. It attracts people from all over the country as it is one of the few true mechanical swap meets catering for vintage, veteran, classic, cars, motorcycles, parts, tools and mechanicalrelated stuff. You won’t ﬁnd kitchen appliances and toys at

this event,” explained Hororata Community Trust event manager, Cindy Driscoll. “The Trust very much want to stay true to John and Dave’s vision for this event. It was the interest from people wanting to see this event happen that encouraged us to try for this new date even though it normally takes place in September. We are looking forward to ﬁnally making it happen. To run this event at this time we have to comply with the Covid Protection Framework which means people will need to present their vaccine certiﬁcate before they can enter. We

encourage people to wear masks and follow all Government guidelines to stay safe and well,” Cindy concluded. People do not need to book a site they can just turn up and pay $15 on the day. Entry for buyers is $5 per adult, under 12 years is free. There is no EFTPOS so people need to bring cash. There will also be food and coffee vendors in attendance. LOCALS CLUB The Locals Club was born at a New Years Eve barbeque in 2020. It started with a chat between a couple of locals about how they could do more around their local communities in Sheffield and Waddington, as well as bringing back the connection and community spirit that many had when they were a bit younger. The first group event The Locals started was the Waddington Wanderers, a bike group that meets for a casual bike ride (nothing too serious) around the local district each Sunday morning. Early on there were only a few keen riders, but it has now grown to about 10-15 most weekends. From there the group moved onto a major project of raising funds to build bus shelters for the Darfield High students in both Sheffield and Waddington. After a lot of planning and raising of funds, the building is due to start next month. Last year the group ran a few events, but mother nature and Covid meant a lot had to be postponed to this year. “We are delighted that we can now bring these events to our local community and rekindle the community spirit,” commented member Ann-Maree Ozanne. Brake adjustments, derailleur adjustments, puncture repairs, etc. To be held on the grounds of the Sheffield Community Hall or in Hall Supper Room, dependant on weather.

However, if you are unfamiliar with digital wallets, this can be confusing. That’s why we have put together this handy guide on what a digital wallet is, what it can do, how it works, and how to set it up. What can Digital Wallets do? •

Make contactless payments when you’re shopping instore. All you need is to click the side button on your phone.

Make easy and secure payments when you’re shopping online. You can skip the lengthy checkout form because all of your personal and banking information is stored and preﬁlled. • Keep all of your important documents organized and easily accessible. Keep boarding passes, reward passes, event tickets and vaccine passes on your phone. Passes can include helpful information, such as the balance on your coffee card, a coupon expiration date, or boarding information for a ﬂight. All you need to do is; show, scan and go! •

How do Digital Wallets work? Using your Digital Wallet to pay. When using your digital wallet to pay, you need to check whether there is a contactless payment symbol at the checkout. If yes, you can put your smartphone close to the payment terminal, the devices will communicate with each other utilizing NFC (Near Field Communication) technology. To complete the transaction, you might need to conﬁrm it by tapping the required button in the app or entering a password.

smells. These features contribute to the anticipated amenity values of those with a rural outlook vs an urban outlook. So, how do you manage the situation when those with urban lifestyle amenity expectations choose to move into a rural neighbourhood. The rise of lifestyle blocks in the rural environment over the last thirty years has seen an increase in sensitivity to the effects arising from normal rural activities by those not fully accustomed to wide-open spaces. This is known as reverse sensitivity effects and is managed through the district plan when undertaking a subdivision in or close to the rural environment. In the most extreme situations, complaints about the nature of farming activities through cumulative lifestyle block holders with urban-type amenity values can push farming activities to relocate further away from urban areas. The district plan sets out the minimum allotment size for the rural zone and in most districts, this is 20ha, which allows for separation between dwellings and farm base areas to avoid effects across boundaries, and maintain the rural amenity anticipated. When seeking dispensation (resource consent) to create allotments smaller than 20ha, Council is required to consider additional mitigation measures proposed to protect lawfully operating farms in the surrounding area from complaints arising from smaller landholders whose amenity

values may be more aligned with urban expectations. Measures commonly used include landscaping within property boundaries of smaller allotments, which provides a sense of separation, and avoids visual effects across boundaries. In some cases, solid fences can provide mitigation from noise or sprays occurring in farming activities, where it is costeffective to install such a fence. Alternatively, the use of acoustic insulation for bedrooms can mitigate noise effects, and such measures are included in the Marlborough District planning frameworks to avoid effects from lawfully established frost fans. Increased dwelling setback from boundaries can also provide a greater sense of separation from rural activities, which may alleviate effects. The difficulty is knowing how much of the setback will provide sufficient separation to avoid the potential for effects for new landowners to the area. Seeking too much setback can place unnecessary restrictions on future landowners, while insufficient setback will not achieve the desired effect of protecting lawful rural activities. When considering a subdivision to provide for rural lifestyle allotment, it’s worth thinking about what future neighbours amenity expectations are likely to be, and if there is sufficient mitigation to ensure the new neighbours have no reason to complain about your cows. HELPING SCHOOLS The average ﬁxed broadband usage increased by 37% from the year prior in New Zealand, during 2020/21. The need to use the internet for a wider range of activities during the pandemic wasn’t restricted to business and home use, with schools also having to ﬁnd new ways to engage with students and their families. Dunsandel Primary School has incurred additional ICT costs because of the need to livestream events due to Covid limiting the number of people able to attend school events. These costs have been offset by funds contributed by ANZCO Foods, through its ‘Sponsor a School Programme’. ANZCO Foods is one of New Zealand’s largest exporters with an annual turnover of $1.53 billion and nearly 3,000 employees globally. Established in 1984, ANZCO Foods is a multinational company that undertakes a variety of activities including farming, processing, manufacturing and marketing New Zealand beef and lamb products to the world. It also produces sophisticated manufactured food and healthcare products. Last year Dunsandel Primary School received a donation of $3,587.50 as part of the annual programme, with the money going towards the costs of livestreaming events to enable increased numbers of school families to attend events via Zoom. During 2021, ANZCO donated more than $106,000 to primary schools New Zealand wide through the Programme and

since the beginning of the programme in 2011, a substantial $1.2 million has been contributed to rural schools. The company works with local dairy farming families who nominate a rural primary school to receive a donation from ANZCO, that is linked to supply. “The ANZCO “Sponsor a School Programme provides the business with an opportunity to put funds back into rural communities and support the young people in our regions. “We’re always looking for more farmers to register for the programme because the greater the support we get from the rural community, the more we are able to contribute back to

schools,” commented Shannon Parnham. Head of Livestock for ANZCO. “It was great we could meet some of the increased costs of delivering School functions during the pandemic through the programme. The donation from ANZCO makes a big difference to the School and our ability to extend participation through technology,” commented Sonia Colenso of Dunsandel School. “We still have funds remaining and we will be deciding on how these will be spent in 2022. We are upgrading some of our junior classrooms and hope to use the balance of these funds to provide additional resources for these classes,” Sonia concluded.

The Windwhistle Winter Sports Club (WWSC) is celebrating its 90th birthday in 2022. The Mt Olympus Ski Club, otherwise known as the WWSC was founded in 1932. The Club began with ice-skating at Lake Ida, and then in 1948 chose Mt Olympus as the closer of two potential nearby ski-field sites, and the location for the Bottom Hut was decided upon in the same year. A mere four years later the main rope tow was installed and in typical ‘can-do’ Club style, the entire rope was physically carried by hand to the field up the last stretch of the road from Monck's Flat by ten men and two women. Over the years Club members have volunteered to develop facilities on the field, including upgrading the Top Hut in recent years. To kick off a year of celebrating the Club will host a picnic on Sunday, January 23rd at the Top Hut on Mt Olympus Ski Field. This is an open invitation to members, past members, and

anyone interesting in coming to see the ﬁeld in summer! This is a free event. “Mt Olympus is a special place, winter or summer. This is a great chance to come and see what our Club members have built over the past 90 years, see the repairs to the road which was ﬂood damaged in May 2021 and generally enjoy being in the mountains. You will be able to walk up to the mountain tarn,” commented organiser Karen Meares.

“People need to bring their own picnic food, but tea and coffee will be provided. You do need a 4WD to access the Top Hut,” Karen concluded. Everyone must register to receive the access information, the Ida gate will be locked so people cannot just turn up! People will need to present their vaccination certiﬁcates to attend this event. To the Editor: A few days ago, we went for a picnic and some trout fishing in the Waimakariri River at the end of Kimberley Road near Darfield. To our disappointment, we saw on the river bed, the very recent remains of a large, burnt pile of car parts, paint spray cans, drink bottles and Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) canisters. Nearby an irrigation water pumping shed was covered with tagging of all descriptions, obviously also done by local juveniles. Clearly the Environment Canterbury $750 fine signs for dumping rubbish sited on many of the tracks beside the river are too difficult to understand for some. My question now is, is this the

Darﬁeld Garden Club’s end of year 2021 Christmas celebration was held on the Old West Coast Road at the home of Val and Robbie Watson. A beautifully catered lunch with all the trimmings and more was enjoyed by all that attended. Everyone wandered around the gardens and loved seeing all that was there, including the sculptures that Robbie had made and were purchased by lucky members. The exchanging of plants completed a really lovely day out. Our new year starts on February 1st with an evening walk around local gardens in Bangor Road. We will be meeting at Tussock Square at 5.30pm and new members are always welcome.

DARFIELD GUN CLUB CELEBRATES 40TH ANNIVERSARY On Sunday, January 16th Darﬁeld Gun Club held their annual Memorial Shoot to honour the memory of shooters who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge. In conjunction with this was a celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the Club..

I have the privilege of writing an acknowledgement of some key members, all of who have assisted to enable the Club to reach this milestone. The achievements of the Club, as a team, is the cornerstone upon which we operate.

Much of the information below about members is directly supplied from the memory of John Creamer, one such longstanding member of the Gun Club. Colin Stott, past President, NZCTA (New Zealand Clay Target Association). The current Patron of the Club. Colin was instrumental in the ﬁeld layout and insisted that the Club should be an Affiliated Club with The NZ Clay Target Association. His encouragement and advice on all things Club wise have been extremely valuable. Murray Robertson, one of the original DIY blokes who sawed and supplied all the boxing, built the trap houses and helped with clearing the site. Murray has been Club President many times and has been a Stalwart of the shooting teams in addition to his ongoing roles in the Club environment Eddie Hurst, long time committee member known for his business-like approach to all matters including ﬁnancial knowledge. Eddie and Jean have supported the Club with generous contributions especially regarding the Hurst Waimak 100 over so many years. He is also a great competitor and has been a valued member of the team shooting fraternity Colin McRae, Club Stalwart and

Shooting Centre Stalwart, his induction to the NZCTA Hall of Fame speaks for itself. He is our barbecue aﬁcionado and has a lifetime of shooting game and clay targets. I imagine the family when he ﬁres his last shot, will have the problem of deciding his headstone; either clay trap or mai mai. Others who deserve a mention, Merv Frew, Geoff Smith, the late Marshal Voice, the late Keith Munro, and Bevan Brown. Memorial Shoot 2022 Results Not a nice day for shooting with a strong nor-east wind and everyone struggled at one time or another throughout the afternoon. Even the presence of past members didn’t inspire the majority to shoot better. With 37 attendees the day was long but with clear blue skies so there was no issues with changing light despite the late ﬁnish. Event 2 on the day was for meat prizes and off Handicap marks. The back mark of 21 metres was a real challenge but some good scores were put on the board and extensive shoot-off’s required to sort out the winners. Event 3 was the Memorial shoot and a single possible won the day for Ron Greatorex.

DARFIELD CRICKET UPDATE The first cricket game back after the Christmas break saw both Weedons and Darfield making full use of their squads with some players away on representative duties and others still on holiday. Batting first, Weedons started slowly thanks to tight bowling from Tom Innes and he was soon rewarded with wickets in the 5th, 7th and 9th overs to have the guests wobbling at 15/3. Charlie Robson (37) tried to tidy things up for Weedons but a wicket each for Ryan Hughes and Liam Foulkes through the middle overs never gave the visitors a chance of pushing forward with a reasonable score. Some late order hitting from Jaideep Singh (23) and

Mana Singh (21) got the total over 100 but Jordy Frew maintained the pressure snaring 4 wickets for himself. Robbie Foulkes took the last wicket to fall in the 40th over. 128 to win should have been plain sailing on a pitch as flat and hard as the one provided but a wicket in the 2nd and 7th overs meant Darfield were 16/2 thanks to accurate bowling from Hamish D'Arcy. Robbie Foulkes made use of the fast outfield, hitting 9 boundaries on his way to 47 but when he fell with the team score at 70/4 the outcome was still not certain.
