Charing Cross Cheesery at Riverside Market in Christchurch are celebrating. They have just been awarded a Top New Zealand Cheese Store 2021 accolade, which has come as an unexpected delight to owners Sue and Guy Trafford. Trafford The award from the NZ Specialist Cheesemakers Assn recognises cheese shops across Aotearoa which celebrate and support the local industry by educating cheese lovers and promoting locally made cheese. The Trafford’s both make and sell cheese. Since 2012, they have operated Charing Cross Sheep Dairy, a boutique sheep dairy on their property on Bealey Road, Charing Cross. Initially, they planned to make ice cream, but have branched out into making a range of products in a processing room attached to the dairy. In 2019, they were offered the opportunity to open a cheese shop at Riverside Market in Central Christchurch to compliment the three other ‘buy local’ cornerstone market shops setting up there. “The Market environment is wonderful, with lots of diverse shops and eating places in a beautiful setting and it is really popular with locals and tourists. There is a great community spirit amongst the shop holders and active support from Riverside’s owners and managers,” commented Sue. The Market has given them a perfect venue to showcase their award-winning sheep milk products and those of other South Island artisan cheesemakers. “We only sell South Island cheeses and we curate a range of
cheeses that are now highly sought after and so the shop has been a real hit. They are very committed to a ‘buy local’ philosophy and a relationship-based consumer experience where people can taste and discuss products before they buy. It really confirms for them that shoppers are looking for something new, different, local and award-winning products, a meaningful personal experience and to have their cheeses cut at the counter after tasting and selecting them. Sue and Guy have noticed an increasing demand for sheep, goat, buffalo and other nonbovine cheeses. They chose to milk sheep because sheep milk is a highly versatile, nutritious, milk that offers significant sensory, health,

While it took a bit of convincing people to try the products initially, it is a whole different story now as sheep milk products are much more common in New Zealand and increasingly so in Canterbury.
They found post-earthquakes an increasingly diverse public were looking for more diversity in cheeses reminiscent of what is available internationally but artisan based and New Zealand produced.

Community History Fund Established The Selwyn District Council (SDC) has agreed to set up an interim fund to protect the district’s history while a strategic heritage plan is developed. Under the Long-Term Plan 20212031 the Council agreed to work with mana whenua and heritage groups to develop a strategic heritage plan. Funding from the interim Selwyn Community History Fund is intended to support kaitiaki (guardians, conservators, and protectors), communities and community groups and their heritage activities during the period the Plan will be developed. It will support protecting, promoting and celebrating Selwyn’s history and making it more accessible for residents and visitors. The Council also agreed to establish the Selwyn Community History Committee to oversee the development of the heritage plan. Council Group Manager Community Services and Facilities Denise Kidd said, “it is the start of a process to make real change in the way heritage is supported in Selwyn.
Darfield Plan Change Agreed The SDC has accepted Private Plan Change 63, to rezone an area on the north-eastern edge of Darfield for housing. The Council accepted the application on the recommendation from an independent hearing commissioner, following consultation and a public hearing. The application is to rezone around 60.6 hectares for residential homes and a retirement village. The area is divided into two sections, the first is proposed for the development of a retirement village and 103 homes with a mix of low and medium density lots. The second section is proposed to be developed once a new wastewater connection has been completed to the Pines Wastewater Treatment Plant and could see around 347 homes built. New Industrial Land Agreed The SDC has accepted Private Plan Change 66, to rezone an area to the east of the iPort inland port for further industrial development.
The plan change will see 27 hectares of land next to iPort rezoned and was supported by KiwiRail and the Lyttelton Port Company. SDC also agreed to rules that would ensure the land can only be used for industrial purposes and within noise sensitivity rules, and that the land cannot be developed until any new overbridge of State Highway 1 from Rolleston Drive to iZone is operational and cannot access Maddisons Road. Trade Waste and Wastewater Bylaws Updated Changes to the Council’s Trade Waste and Wastewater bylaws have been agreed to simplify the two bylaws. The bylaws have been amended following public consultation. Both bylaws have undergone minor changes. The trade waste bylaw simplifies the way low-risk premises are charged for trade waste discharges. The wastewater bylaw details who can work on drains; and to simplify the system for ‘common drains’ (private drains with multiple connections).

Attendees were taught how to play in the style of the Irish Fiddlers with lots of embellishments and strong repetitive rhythms. “It was great fun with sixteen of us playing together. DARFIELD CRIME CAMERAS Within twenty-four hours of going live, the Darfield Crime Cameras assisted police in locating several youths involved in the damage of vehicles and signs. “This is only the beginning, with twenty three crime cameras spread throughout Darfield. This has established a net that will be
used to catch offenders and keep our community safe,” commented Senior Sergeant Stephen McDaniel, Area McDaniel Deployment Manager. “They provide an additional layer of security for all residents in providing a safer community,” added newly appointed Malvern Community Chairman Harvey

The End of Life Choice Act 2019 (‘The Act’) was brought into effect by a referendum at the 2020 General Election. The Act enables an eligible person to have the option of legally requesting assisted dying from November, 7th 2021. It is not a replacement for palliative care or health services more generally, it provides another option for people with terminal illnesses in certain circumstances. To meet the ‘certain criteria’ the person must: • Be aged 18 years or over • Be either a New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident • Suffer from a terminal illness that is likely to end their life within 6 months • Be in an advanced state of irreversible decline in
physical capability Experience unbearable suffering that cannot be relieved in a manner that they consider tolerable • Be competent to make an informed decision about assisted dying. The eligibility requirement to be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident means that a person is eligible for funded health care services. Life Insurance policies typically include an exclusion if a person dies as a result of suicide or other intentional self-injury. However, section 35 of The Act provides that a person who dies as a result of assisted dying is for the purposes of any life insurance contract (or any other contract) is taken to have died from the terminal illness •
suffered, and as if assisted dying had not been provided. This will mean that generally, life insurance policies remain valid. With the introduction of this new legislation, the process governing assisted dying is now likely to form part of a wider conversation around wills, enduring powers of attorney and advance care plans. RUNNING FOR MOVEMBER Darfield locals, Jess Henderson and Caitlin Knowles are both running 60km during this month, in honour of the late Rusty Henderson, Henderson as well as for all the other fathers, sons and brothers who have struggled and are struggling with mental health. “We are running 60km this Movember for the 60 men we lose each hour of every day,” the pair commented. Movember looks at mental
health through a male lens, focusing on prevention, early intervention and health promotion. The group is working towards a world where men take action to be mentally well and are supported by those around them. Globally, the rate of suicide is alarmingly high, particularly in men. Too many men are ‘toughing it out’, keeping their feelings to themselves and struggling in silence. Movember is aiming to reduce the rate of male suicide by 25% by 2030, and these girls want to help. So, help them stop men dying too young and donate to this very
worthwhile cause. Your generosity will help fuel the game-changing work in men’s mental health, the innovative medical research, and groundbreaking tests and treatments for prostate cancer and testicular cancer. PROFESSIONAL PLANNER What does a Professional Planner do for your Land Development Projects? By Rose Leighton, Planner, Baseline Group.

THE MOST COMMON QUESTION My vocation is an interesting one, never a dull moment one might say! But the question I get asked the most is not one of interesting content – it is quite simply – who is responsible for the smoke detectors? To me smoke detectors are like seatbelts – never be without them. But the message is still taking its time to get around. I have been in a house where the smoke detectors have been removed as the tenant said she did not smoke – so did not need them. Or the house where the intense heat of the cooking creates so much smoke the smoke detectors are removed – but the most common reason I have come across for not having smoke detectors up in a rental property is both parties not being sure whose responsibility it is. So here it is – When a tenancy starts the landlord is responsible to make sure there are working smoke detectors in a property. They must not be expired. If they are and they are being replaced they must be replaced with LONGLIFE PHOTOTELECTRIC smoke detectors or hardwired ones. At a minimum, they must be within three metres of every sleeping area doorway. If it is a multilevel house there must be at least one on every level. If there are any buildings outside of the house such as a hobby room or sleep out, you need to have one in there also. If you want them in the lounge or kitchen area seek advice about heat detectors – as invariably these will be the ones that get taken down due to being set off with living smoke from cooking or a log burner. If they expire during the course of the tenancy it is up to the landlord to replace them. The landlord is responsible to make sure they remain in working order for the duration of the tenancy. It is a good idea at the tenant induction to check them together. That instigates the conversation also about keeping them up, etc. During the tenancy, the tenant has a responsibility to keep the smoke detectors in place and to advise the landlord if they stop working. If there are still some old school ones with 9v batteries it is the tenant's responsibility to replace the batteries. And if preservation of life is not enough of an incentive this may be: If landlords don’t meet their obligations, they could face financial penalties of up to $7,200. If tenants don’t meet their obligations they could face financial penalties of up to $4,000.
Acquiring a resource consent can involve several different professionals, including planners, surveyors, lawyers, landscape architects, engineers and ecologists. So, how does planning differ from other professions and when should you engage one? Planners that work in resource management can help you identify the issues and effects of your proposal and put together an application for submission to
the Council. This application will address site constraints, the proposal, an assessment of all relevant rules and other matters in the District Plan and an assessment of any effects your proposal may produce. As well as your planner, it is common for other professionals to be involved in the application process, such as acoustic engineers, ecologists, landscape architects, or traffic engineers. Your planner will work with you

in the preliminary stages to identify if any specific reports are needed or if any changes are required to the proposal to create a stronger application. Planners can interpret and apply rules in a case-by-case manner, allowing us to assess the severity and type of non-compliances and provide advice as to how to progress your application. If your application is for a subdivision or boundary adjustment, then a surveyor will be required. They can perform site surveys to provide accurate boundary information, prepare a scheme plan showing the future subdivision and set out your proposed boundaries. This information supports the report that planners prepare for submission to the council and will form the basis of an assessment against the District Plan. Alternatively, if your application is for a land use consent, an architectural designer may be required in order to develop the design of any proposal buildings and how they are set out on your site. These are just a few examples of information and other professionals that may be required to develop a complete application. Planning does not often perform as an isolated profession and instead is accompanied by myriad disciplines that work in adjacent fields. Through this, planners can be precise in what they require from other professionals based on the applicable rules, the type of development being proposed and the site itself. Planners have the knowledge and expertise that will assist your project or development in achieving the support it needs to gain approval. While planning consultants cannot ultimately determine the outcome of your proposal, they can guide you through the process and mediate with the Council to resolve any issues that may come up. VOTE FOR LOCAL GARDENER Earlier this year, NZ Gardener once again launched its annual search for greenfingered good sorts, individuals, or groups who have used their gardening skills to help other people. Nominations for the 2021 Ryman Healthcare Gardener of the Year poured in from across the country with finalists featuring in the November issue of the magazine. The 2021 winner will receive a $1,000 Palmers Gift Card, and each finalist will receive a prize pack of amazing goodies. There’s also a Most Colourful Character section, with the lucky winner receiving $1,000 worth of Resene paint for their next garden renovation. Darfield local, Bronwyn AdamsAdamsHooper is one of five finalists. Approximately three years ago Bronwyn was asked if she would be interested in running a horticulture programme at the Christchurch Men’s Prison Youth Unit for 18-21 year olds serving time. Bronwyn began going to
the unit every Wednesday afternoon to work with the young men, clearing and planting the prison’s gardens. It didn’t take long for there to be an abundance of edible crops, which were of a very high standard and eaten by the men and Bronwyn also takes a share to the community pantry in Darfield. Bronwyn wanted to show the men what they were achieving, so she got permission granted for them to enter a previous Courtenay A&P Show. The first year the prison gardens were entered they won sixteen certificates, won the broad beans class and grew some fantastic rhubarb. Since then the prisoners have been fierce competitors at a couple of local A&P Shows, entering both the vegetable and rose sections. “Since we started entering the shows, the buy-in to the garden programme has been incredible,” Bronwyn commented. “These young men don’t get a lot of positive feedback, many of
them have never had any! I also print certificates for the men, this might be the first time some of them have felt like they have achieved something. “The young men often talk about growing food for their families in the future and currently two have found jobs in the horticulture industry after being released. Bronwyn hopes that seeing things like the vegetables in the community pantry and entries at shows might change the perception of what these young men are capable of in the future. “I want to give the boys skills, so they get jobs. But it’d be awesome if someone saw what they had done and thought, ‘wow’. Because then they might be convinced to give them a chance they would not otherwise have got,” Bronwyn added. Another project Bronwyn is passionate about is her ‘Seeds of Change’, this is a personal project for her, which she does from her property in Darfield. She is slowly converting her twoacre piece of land into a food forest. The aim of this is to supply veggies and fruit to the food banks and help support families who have hit tough times. “It works on a, not for profit structure and every family that buys a box of veggies off me I gift four other families veggies and at the peak of the season approximately twenty families are receiving veggies,” Bronwyn concluded. The Malvern School of Music (MSM) (Inc) held their 34th Annual Concert on Sunday, November 7th. Due to Covid restrictions, this was for ticket holders only and was held as two smaller Concerts. For the first of the afternoon performances, our audience greatly enjoyed hearing three talented young pianists, tutored by Adele Langlands. Langlands This was followed by students tutored by Liz Nicholls in guitar, banjo and vocals, performing group and solo items, showcasing their beautiful singing. Four wonderful toetapping drummers were next, supported by tutor Alicia Alvis. Alvis Tutors Ray McMurdo and Helen Langen played alongside their students to present a delightful guitar version of the Beatles’ ‘Let It Be’. We were all enthralled when Jakob Coleman gave a solo performance of ‘Midnight’ by Joe Satriani; Satriani his fingers were flying! The Darfield Ukulele Group, led by Adele Langlands concluded the first Concert with four tunes demonstrating picking with a strumming accompaniment. The second Concert opened with tutor Pauline Sewell’s Sewell violinists, ranging from young primary age students through to adults, playing a favourite selection of pieces from ‘Baby Shark’ to two dancing polkas. Senior Year 13 student, Z’Arn Payne very ably played ‘La Golondrina’ (The Swallow) as a solo item. We were treated to hear two adult students performing two cello pieces, joined by tutor Cecilia Pascoe. Next was Pauline Pascoe
Sewell’s recorder students who played four lovely tunes very well. Our finale was the MSM (Inc) orchestral item: ‘Ye Olde English Songs’ – Traditional Songs arranged by Helen Langen. We were very grateful to have our conductor Annabel Harold work with us at rehearsals and give our many students such a great experience playing in an orchestra. This was a marvellous conclusion for our
afternoon. Our grateful thanks to Melissa Jebson for being our MC and to all the parents for their support. SUCCESSFUL OPEN DAY Perfect weather greeted everyone who dropped in to Springfield Adventure Park for the first Jet Boat World Open Day. Perched overlooking the mighty Waimakariri River, Jet Boat World tells the story of Bill Hamilton’s Hamilton search for a way to boat upstream against the flow. He finally succeeded in the 1950s down in Irishman Creek in the Mackenzie Basin, but so much of that early development actually happened at Woodstock beach opposite the Faulkner's farming property in Springfield. Paul Vernel and Paul Mullan have been expanding their Alpine Jet Thrills business to try and ‘pivot’ into areas other than the non-existent cruise ship tourism which had been the lifeblood of the business. Last Saturday’s Open Day was the first chance locals had to see what all the fuss was about and for those who attended, they
weren’t disappointed. Entry level Jet Boat and Air Boat rides were eagerly snapped up by those wanting to sample some of the Waimakariri Canyon or skim wet stones in the lower braided reaches. Plenty of hot Sims Bakery pies were gobbled up, along with sweet treats and coffee. The kids could even roast a marshmallow on a portable fire pit. Three pet lambs were a favourite with the kids too, as were the jet boats on display inside. One new addition to the collection, an early children’s amusement ride, refurbished and sporting new artwork, is a resplendent 'minime’ of Bill Hamlton’s early Jet 30. For the big kids there were five New Zealand Marathon winning jet race boats to pour over, in stark contrast to the older historic models inside the complex. The large amount of feedback
receivedwas overwhelmingly positive according to Paul Mullan, “those who took the time to come and check it out were really enthusiastic and we’re encouraged, so many are talking of returning with more friends and family over summer”. While it’s early days the two Paul’s have committed to having the new facility open and available for visitors every weekend from now, through to the end of January. As well, Springfield Adventure Park will also host many corporate end of year functions in the lead up to the Christmas. If you haven’t already got something planned, support local and consider your Christmas ‘do’ relaxing overlooking the Waimakariri after a Jet Boat experience up one of the most picturesque river gorges in New Zealand - right at your backdoor.

DARFIELD PREMIER CRICKET REPORT Darfield remain on top of the leader board with a thumping win against bottom dwellers Lincoln last Saturday, on home ground. Batting first on the best pitch prepared so far this season, Darfield had their first hundred run opening stand of the summer from Zak Foulkes and Nick Gilbert. Gilbert Both batters were ruthless on anything short and set up the perfect platform for the middle order. Gilbert was the first to depart with a run a ball 62, and the team score at 150 in the 22nd over. Foulkes played aggressive shots when balls were in his preferred zone and rotated strike with new partner Jesse Frew to near perfection. These two plundered a 100-run partnership and seemed to be challenging each other for boundaries hit. Foulkes brought up his maiden hundred for the Club with an effortless cover drive, raised his bat to acknowledge the applause from his teammates and then got back to work. He eventually fell for
124 runs from only 103 balls. Ryan Hughes continued the carnage, and even when Frew departed for a splendid 79 from 52 balls, a short stay from Tom Dempster didn't matter as the run rate remained healthy, and 300 was passed in the 38th over. Hughes boofed his way to 64 runs, from 37 balls as he and Ben Innes took the total to 378/5. Hughes was dismissed from the final ball of the innings. Lincoln needed to maintain a run rate of 8.4 per over to keep pace and were cruising along at 10 or 11 per over, as the openers took advantage of the power play and hit with the wind to carry the ball to or over the boundary. Tom Innes in particular took some tap as he leaked 29 runs from 2 overs. Runs were harder to get from the other end, and Liam Foulkes strangled from there. When the first wicket of Tom Cross (53) fell with the team score at 101, the Darfield bowlers could smell blood in the water. Andrew Bell, Bell Will

SUCCESS FOR LOCAL TEXEL STUDS Covid restrictions did not stop the Selwyn Spring Show or Ashburton A&P Shows from going ahead, with sheep bred by Rolleston based Texel Breeders Don and Eunice Edgecombe from Maple Genetics taking all the top prizes! At the Selwyn Spring Show, Mr T (bred by Don Edgecombe) and jointly owned by Northern Dawn and Alamae Texel Studs took first place in the Ram over 18 months class, with Don's own rams taking second and third. Don again also took out the top three in the Ram under 18 months class. Champion Texel Ram and Supreme Texel were awarded to Don's rams with Mr T scooping Reserve Champion Texel Ram. The accolades for Don's stud and his attention to genetic detail in the animals he has sold continued at Ashburton A&P Show where this time it was a three stud race between Don's Maple Genetics, Northern Dawn and Alamae Texel Studs for the top prizes. The positions stayed the same with the Ram over 18 months class, with Mr T taking out first place and Don's sheep second
and third. Don's animals took first and second place in the Ram under 18 months class, with third going to a ram bred by Northern Dawn and Alamae Texel Studs. Northern Dawn and Alamae Texel Studs ewe LML (bred by Broadgate Texel Stud) with a lamb bred from Mr T took out first place in Ewe over 18 months with suckling lamb and Don's animals hot on their hocks taking second and third places. In the Ewe under 18 months class, ewes bred by Northern Dawn and Alamae Studs took first and third place with Don taking second. Mr T was awarded Champion Texel Ram with Don's ram taking the Reserve Champion Texel
Ram ribbon, a swap from the Selwyn Spring Show a couple of weeks before. LML was awarded Champion Texel Ewe and Supreme Texel and Northern Dawn and Alamae Studs other ewe Reserve Champion Texel Ewe. The judge for the Supreme Ewe All Breeds made special mention of the excellent quality of the lamb LML had raised (sired by Mr T) and placed her second to a Romney ewe raising twins. COLOURED LAMBS ARE WINNERS There is a team of local pet lamb owners who are looking forward to the next Show which will allow the Pet Lamb section to go ahead. Selwyn Spring Show hosted by the Ellesmere A&P Association on October 16th ran an excellent Pet Lamb section under Covid Level 2 restrictions and they were inundated with entries. All parents were socially distanced, or kept in their bubbles while their children floated on bubbles of excitement! The Black and Coloured Pet Lamb class was to be the one that stole the show, with Jack Reed (14 months) from West Melton taking first place with his lamb Midnight Star, riding cowboy style when he wasn't walking alongside his lamb with the lead dragging on the ground. The youngest winner in recent history!
His older sister, Eva Reed took second place with her lamb Lavender, their friend Tessa Bamford third with her lamb Winnie the Pooh and Jack’s youngest sister three year old Matilda Reed took fourth place with her lamb Lamby. Eva and Matilda also placed second and third leading their pet sheep Twinks and TJ with
their lambs in the Pet Sheep with Lambs at Foot class. Let’s hope the upcoming shows have the same commitment to our next generation of shepherds and shepherdesses as the Selwyn Spring Show who streamed the judging live on their Facebook page! Kim Lewis.

MALVERN RIFLE CLUB Last weekend’s shoot was the second day of the 2021/22 Club Championship, with 15 counting shots at 800 and 900 yards. Again the sun and a fishtailing headwind from the targets to the shooting mound greeted contestants. The wind, while not strong, was very variable with quick changes in strength and direction, which made conditions challenging for most of the shooters. A possible score is 75 for TR classes and 90 for F classes. None were seen this weekend. Andre, Allan, Mike and Andre Allan
Matthew got close though, with great shooting in the conditions. Next weekend is the Canterbury Spring Championship, which will be held over two days, with 10 counting shots at 300, 800, 900 and 900 yards on Saturday and 10 counting shots at 500, 600 and 600 on Sunday. Championship Belts will be awarded in the TR, FTR and FOpen classes. Shooting is a sport for both men and women. Anyone is welcome to come out and try target shooting. We have club rifles that you can use. All you need to
