As the Autumn Term is almost at a close, I am pleased to report that Malvern College has had another busy term: academically, in sports, in drama, in music and in the usual multitude of CCA opportunities.
I am delighted to report that Francesco Totaro achieved the highest mark in the world for Cambridge IGCSE Foreign Language Italian in June 2019 Cambridge examinations! Congratulations!

This term I have hosted Brunch for over 90 pupils from across all the year groups who have gone the extra mile in the attitude with which they have approached life, demonstrating the Malvernian Qualities in all areas of the school: academically, in the co-curricular or super-curricular or within their House. These have included many of the key individuals who set the standards for others to follow and act as leading lights in determining the strength and success of the College. I look forward to continuing this initiative with pupils during the Lent Term.
There are a few things IT-related which I would like to update you on:
Malvern College has a legal duty to have filtering systems in place for students on our network and parents should be aware that pupils using unlimited 3G or 4G means that they can bypass these systems. Pupils using VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) are also attempting to bypass systems which we cannot ignore. An organisation is also more vulnerable to virus attack with pupils using VPN facility. Lewis Faulkner, Deputy Head: Pastoral and colleagues continue to educate pupils about this.
Over the next few months we are replacing the web filtering system, primarily because the College has increased its internet connection by a multiple of 10 over the past five years. The new system will offer the same functionality as our current system, which is:
• Web filtering policies based on year group for all pupils.
• Scheduling of policies to allow pupils access to non-academic websites during free-time.
• The ability to monitor search queries made by our pupils on the major search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo and Yandex).
The new system also offers the ability to monitor;
• Posts, chat messages, direct messages, comments made by pupils on the major social networks (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram).
• Email content of emails sent / received by Gmail, Hotmail, Outlook and Mail.Ru.
It should be noted that no-one watches or looks at the raw data being generated. Instead we rely on automatic searches based on keywords to generate searches for pupil welfare and our system looks for key words such as “suicide”, ‘bullying” etc. The capturing of this data, both search queries and social media, can only take place when the pupils are using the College network, when they go home, or go onto 3G or 4G then we have no ability to capture this data.
As part of the planned evolution of our ICT systems, we have recently completed the process of migrating all email accounts to the @malverncollege.org.uk format. Please could I encourage parents to delete any stored addresses in the old @malcol.org style as these messages will no longer be delivered to staff or to pupils.
The ‘Sanctions and Rewards Working Group’, led by Lewis Faulkner, Deputy Head: Pastoral, has met with the School Council, Chapel Prefects, Heads of Houses and colleagues for feedback. They have studied the data and are reviewing the current systems. Conclusions so far are that there should be a greater emphasis on pupil reflection as well as clearer escalation and greater consistency when sanctions are deemed appropriate. The aim is to continue the Working Group and departmental trials this year before rolling out changes more widely from September 2020.
To complement the House trips and other school activities organised on a Sunday, Liam Smith, Activity Co-ordinator, centrally organises Sunday trips and recently pupils have enjoyed trips to Alton Towers and trampolining in Bristol. Trips for the Lent Term will include Xscape, Milton Keynes, which will include indoor skydiving, virtual reality experiences and ten pin bowling, as well as a trip to Drayton Manor theme park. Pupils are notified of these trips via their House notices and are encouraged to sign up in advance.
As part of her role in CCF, Esther Woods, is acting as one of the Lord Lieutenant’s Cadets. This is recognised as one of the highest honours a cadet can achieve and recently Esther supported the Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire at HRH The Princess Royal’s visit to Kimala (a local medical equipment manufacturer).

In late November, the Drama department production of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ was performed in the Rogers Theatre to great acclaim. This was an outstanding production, a performance full of emotion, energy and verve. A tremendous amount of singing, dancing and acting talent was evident amongst our musical theatre pupils who clearly relished presenting Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s rock opera. Impressive vocals, vibrant choreography, charming individual performances, a highly committed ensemble and superb technical design combined to create this visually

stunning and emotionally moving production. Jonny Tunstall as Caiaphas, ably supported by the Priestesses Morgann McGee, Boo Forbes, Syuzanna Avanesova and Kitty Holroyd, Cameron Eldridge as Peter, Missy Hingley as Mary, Jack Yeoward as Pilate, Oli Doherty as Judas and Nicholas Wilson as Jesus performed their roles excellently. This was a very slick production by the Drama department team which built towards its crescendo with utmost professionalism.

Cameron Eldridge, Missy Hingley, Morgann Mcgee, Jonny Tunstall, Oli Doherty, Amani Priddy and Nicholas Wilson erformed in the Malvern Theatres foyer, to the audiences of ‘My Cousin Rachel’ and ‘The Eagles’ tribute band as part of the ‘Advent Calendar’ series of performances from local arts groups. It presented an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the talents of our pupils to the wider community!

The Christmas Concert is one of two showcases for the College’s Music Ensembles and this year didn’t disappoint, despite a number of pupils being affected by illness. With the College Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Percussion Ensemble and both Chapel and Chamber Choirs all performing, there was a lovely range of repertoire from Renaissance polyphony, through to symphonic wind band Christmas music, so something for everyone. We were also treated to House 2 and House 8 reprising their excellent singing from the House Singing competition earlier on in the term. A rousing audience rendition of Hark the Herald accompanied by the Concert Band brought the concert to a fittingly festive close.
The Chapel and Chamber Choirs were in extremely good voice for Town Carols on Wednesday 11th December. With carols ranging from arrangements of traditional carols through to the contemporary composer Eric Whitacre, there was some wonderful singing, whilst the readers spoke with great poise and clarity. The Brass Ensemble accompanied the hymn singing with aplomb and it was a real treat to hear the descants soaring above the hymn singing of the congregation. A perfect way to kick off the Christmas festivities.

This year’s Christmas Unplugged did a fantastic job of putting the college in celebratory mood, featuring some of our most talented musicians in an eclectic mix of popular music. From Guns N’ Roses to Billie Eilish, the appreciative audience were treated to some highly individual and accomplished performances. Several of the songs were very cleverly arranged, with stylish instrumental contributions. The event was live-streamed across the school, entertaining the lower school pupils and providing much-needed motivation for their packing!

I also want to update you on The Malvernian Society and the significant role they undertake at Malvern College both within the school life… and well beyond!
The Malvernian Society was established in 1895 as the alumni association for former pupils of Malvern College. More recently, the Society has also begun to engage with parents. The Society aims to promote life-long relationships between the College and the wider Malvernian community and to support the advancement of Malvern College. In particular, it seeks to:
• enable Old Malvernians to keep in touch with one another and the College, and to promote the activities of the affiliated members clubs;
• enable OMs and current pupils to benefit from a structured programme of careers advice, work experience and professional networking;
• keep parents engaged with the school, during and after their child’s time at Malvern;
• maintain a portfolio of traditional and digital communications for the benefit of the Malvernian community;
• undertake fundraising activities in support of the strategic vision for the advancement of the College.
One key recent initiative is closer liaison with the College careers staff, who now have access to OM Connect, which holds details of thousands of OMs and parents across a range of professions who have volunteered to offer professional advice, whether a pupil need help writing a CV, or is looking for a work placement. OMs in aviation, law, media, international relations, medical science, finance, sustainable development and the military, to name but a few, can help. Perhaps you too might help? Noah Goryn (House 7) has been fencing and winning in various competitions, with his most recent win at the Cocksmoor Fencing Championships. This has earned him a place on the England U14 Epee 2020 team with their first tournament in Finland in January.
In this busy hockey season the girls competed in no fewer than 83 games of hockey (outdoor) with around 155 girls representing the College each week. Our U18 boys’ and girls’ teams and our U16s, have competed in 7 indoor hockey tournaments between them.
Outdoor: The 1st XI are competing in the National League Tier 1 competition, whilst our U16s have recently got through to the 4th round of the plate competition which will continue in January. The 1st XI have had excellent wins against Clifton College, Dean Close and Cheltenham College and the 2nd XI having won 6 of their 9 matches this season.
Indoor: All three of our teams entered the National Hockey Indoor competition with all three making it to the Regional Finals. The U18 and U16 girls’ teams did very well to make it through to the semi-finals and the boys just missed out on a semi-final place after finishing third in their group.
England Single System: Currently we have players in both the Junior Academy Centres (County) and Junior Regional Performance Centres.

A loss in the first round has meant that they are now competing in the plate competition, which they are taking by storm with some thrilling matches and close wins against Bishops Veseys and Princethorpe College.
Millie Page has been selected for the Severn Stars U19 squad, a National Performance League team.

Our rackets teams take part in the Public Schools Championships which started at Queens club on Sunday. This term our boys take part in the singles competitions whilst our girls’ pair of Maddie Queen and Ishbel Spencer-Nairn are competing in the Girls’ Doubles Competition, this will be their second tournament following their debut playing for Malvern in The Ladies British Open back in November. We look forward to hearing how they get on.
The rugby boys have had a busy and tough season, but it has been good to see them playing some excellent rugby with good performances across the age groups, playing over 60 games of rugby over the course of this term. The 1st XV’s win against Monmouth to retain the “Border Shield” was a particular highlight.
The U15As in particular have had a great season. They played 12 games (9 wins, 3 losses) and scored 357 points, conceding only 102, and made it to the 3rd Round of the NatWest Cup Competition, where they narrowly lost by 1 point to Old Swinford Hospital in a thrilling encounter.

Canoe Polo

In Outdoor Pursuits, following a tough term of training for the Canoe Polo Bs that included playing in their first regional tournament, the squad spent their final session of the term having a go at submarine canoe polo. A little harder to manoeuvre but an excellent activity for gaining confidence in and under the water!
At Malvern we actively encourage pupils to getting involved with the local and wider community, and overseas. They have held several initiatives and am delighted to announce that they have raised £25k over the year, spread across various charities which they support including: Cancer Research, Alzheimer’s, St Richards Hospice, Medical Detection Dogs, British Red Cross, British Heart Foundation, Acorns Hospice, Toilet Twinning, OSCAR Foundation and MIND.

We continue to encourage our pupils to read over the holidays –I hope there are some good books on their Christmas lists!
This has been a very busy term and I thank pupils and staff for all they have undertaken. May I take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and relaxing Christmas,

Keith Metcalfe Headmaster
