Curiosity & Change-Maker Curriculum (CCM) This aspect of Malvern College life gives pupils the opportunity to go beyond the formal GCSE, BTEC, A level and International Baccalaureate curricula. It is led by pupils, so they can pursue their own interests, exploring subjects in greater depth, developing intellectual curiosity and becoming independent learners. Pupils take ownership of designing aspects of their own academic enrichment, and work with the Malvernian Society to invite notable experts and alumni to deliver guest lectures, on current issues and advanced academic topics. The change-making elements of the CCM involve several action groups who raise awareness of various contemporary issues and work to reduce conflict and misunderstanding. This element of the curriculum allows pupils to effect real change in their community, exploring how they can be a positive influence in society. The CCM curriculum allows pupils to understand the world more deeply, develop leadership skills and foster academic curiosity and independence. It is also a great way of meeting people with similar interests. At the beginning of the year there is a CCM Fair, which gives all pupils in the school the chance to talk to the CCM society leaders to find out more. Explore what is on offer and if you feel there is a gap, speak to the Senior Deputy Head about how to set up your own CCM society!

Empower Her Voice This is an action group within the College that focuses on women’s rights and the perception of women in today’s society. We, as a group, meet every so often to discuss topics related to women, including current events or even matters that date back centuries. We feel that this group is very important in order for people to gain perspectives simply by conversing and also to just gain new knowledge in general. It is also a safe space if you want to talk about personal topics or just need some advice.

Fashion Society In the Fashion Society students will gain an in-depth understanding on how clothing is made and how to design clothes. They will learn how to repurpose materials to create one of a kind garments. OMs and other outside speakers who work in the fashion industry will give talks or help teach students about other aspects of fashion. The society will also organise a charity fashion show in which the clothes we have made will be displayed along with GCSE and A level textile final pieces. We will work together as a society to promote suitable fashion and teamwork.

Game Development In this society we will be teaching the basic fundamentals of how to make a game and also will go more in depth learning how to make a game on your desired platform. During the run times we will also be hosting student led game jams to test your skill and show how far you have come since the beginning. We will help with all aspects of game development and making but focus a lot more behind the code and nodes depending on your platform of how they work and how you can make your own. The game engines we will mainly be focusing on are unity and Godot but if you wish you can use another game engine. There will be two types of game jam contests in the term, one solo and one team.

Gauss Maths Society Malvern College’s Mathematics Society is for students who enjoy challenging problems and exploring ideas beyond the classroom. It is open to all year groups and provides an opportunity to develop mathematical thinking outside the GCSE, A level and IB syllabuses. Throughout the year, we look at a variety of unique maths questions and elegant proofs, and explore topics such as cryptography, infinity, game theory and many others. Sessions are interactive and often student-led, with members presenting short talks, sharing puzzles and discussing different approaches to solving problems. The society meetings take place every fortnight on Fridays at 19:15 in The Gaunt centre. Everyone is welcome to come and challenge themselves, think creatively and discover mathematics beyond the curriculum.

Above all, the society is a space for pupils to show engagement with Geography, try new things, and develop an open-minded view of the world. Everyone is welcome, whatever year group they are in or whether they study Geography. We are excited to see you there!

History Society The History Society is a space to talk about a wide mix of historical topics and to grow your History knowledge. It mainly consists of talks given by students and staff on a topic of their own interest. After each talk, we usually open things up for questions and discussion, so people can share ideas or make links to other subjects and build confidence in speaking about History. It’s open to anyone, whether you take History as a subject or just want to hear engaging talks and learn something new.

‘The Malvern Forum’ This is the political journal of our College. It is published throughout the year with a collection of articles written by various students from a political standpoint. The articles focus on current affairs and other crucial affairs that influence Politics. The articles are primarily written by students who study Politics in A levels or IB, so there is educational substance to the journal. This allows these students to share their knowledge with a wider audience, letting people learn from a student’s viewpoint rather than just from the news.

Meade Economics and Business Society The Economics and Business Society is a student-led group for IB and A level students interested in understanding how economic theory and business practice shape the world around us, and how the two are connected. Through articles and talks, we explore topics beyond the classroom and encourage students to think critically about current issues in economics and business. We also regularly invite senior guest speakers to share their experiences and insights from the business world, giving students a valuable perspective on what a career in business can involve.

Model United Nations The MUN will meet once a week and act in the manner of the United Nations. We will discuss topics, such as security, health, issues, and human rights. The aim is to prepare to participate in a national or international MUN and to improve public speaking skills. It will increase awareness of international issues, and encourage quick, thinking and diplomacy. We also host MUN schools events.

Philosophy Club This is a student-led discussion society, offering students a space to engage with some of the most challenging ethical and philosophical questions of our time. The society meets every other week during homework, though timings can sometimes change depending on other activities happening around the school. Each session is centred on open, respectful debate, giving members a platform to freely express their opinions while also exploring and challenging their peers’ views. Topics discussed have included euthanasia, the harm principle, and abortion, alongside other areas of moral and political philosophy that encourage critical reflection on real-world issues. Through this format, the society aims to develop students’ confidence in voicing their perspectives, constructing and articulating reasoned arguments, listening to opposing viewpoints, and thinking independently, skills that extend well beyond philosophy itself and into academic and everyday life more broadly.

Politics and Foreign Affairs Society The Politics and Foreign Affairs Society meets every Friday from 5:15pm to 6pm in MF3, where members discuss and debate current conflicts, global issues, and international affairs. In addition, we interview and debate with politicians and representatives from various organisations. These events may also be held for a wider audience in the LLT or the Rogers Theatre. Join the Society to improve your public speaking and debating skills, deepening your understanding of global affairs, and play a part in shaping the world while enriching your journey at Malvern College!

Psychology Society The Psychology Society holds talks related to psychology and outside the A level and IB curriculum. We also help aspiring psychologists to succeed in the subject and we aim to also give the lower school a taste of what psychology is like in the sixth form. We give pupils a chance to practice their public speaking skills and also demonstrate the level of research they have done into their selected topic.

Sixth Form Bible Study This is a great opportunity to take your mind off the busy schedule at Malvern College. Once a week, a group of sixth-form students take a walk uptown with Reverend Wharton and other members of staff to the Abbey Road Coffee Shop. Upon arrival, each person will get a free drink from the coffee shop, before settling down for roughly 15 minutes in which you can have a chat and get to know some of the students from other local schools. After the 15 minutes the session begins, often with an external guest speaker, everyone gets the opportunity to both express their thoughts and learn about other people’s opinions. Sessions usually include the opportunity to discuss the topic in a smaller group before sharing your ideas. An important aspect to note is that the bible study is not solely the traditional bible study that some of you may be thinking of, instead it focuses on the application and interpretation of the bible and core values of Christianity in the real world on a day-to-day basis. While this is a bible study, it is important to note that we are open to any beliefs and anyone is more than welcome to come along and share their thoughts.

Spotlight Spotlight is held once a week in the Wellbeing Room. It is an amazing opportunity to converse with and get to know fellow lower school pupils. Every session starts or ends with a few fun games before a discussion about Christian beliefs and teachings is held. Everyone is free to express their own opinion and everyone from all backgrounds is welcome. Snacks are always provided!

Table Top games Ever wanted to slay a dragon, outwit a lich, or talk your way past a suspicious guard using nothing but a persuasive lie and a lucky dice roll? The D&D Society is your gateway into the world’s most famous tabletop role-playing game - Dungeons & Dragons. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned adventurer, all are welcome to pull up a chair, roll some dice, and tell a story together. Beyond D&D, we’ll also have the chance to dip into other tabletop RPG systems, and every so often we’ll swap dice for cards with a session of Magic: The Gathering. If fantasy, sci-fi, or geeky worlds of any kind are your thing, this is the society for you. No experience necessary - just bring your imagination.

Wheeler-Bennett Society The Wheeler-Bennett Society is the Cross-curricular Sixth Form Academic Society. Meeting eight times a year, for two 15-minute talks followed by a 15-minute Q&A session; all talks are given by pupils to an audience of their peers and academic staff and the meeting are organised and overseen by the society’s pupil run committee. All Lower Sixth pupils are able to join the Society and are then able to apply to join the WheelerBennett Committee (including President, Vice Presidents and Secretary posts) during the Spring term. The Society is pupil-run with the committee taking responsibility for the organising of talks, supporting speakers in preparing their presentations, introducing speakers and chairing the Q&A sessions. Talks are carefully chosen by the committee to be wide-ranging in their scope and fully representative of the diverse interests of the pupil body. All committee members are expected to present their research during the year, with the President giving a 30-minute talk in the final meeting, as well as a reflective address in chapel, at the end of their Upper Sixth Spring term. The Wheeler-Bennett Committee is also involved in providing sessions, advice, support and mentoring to members of the Aston Society, developing links with their future society members and inspiring intellectual curiosity within the Lower School.
