President’s Foreword Welcome to the 81st annual exhibition of work by the RSMA. The years roll by. We’re a long way from our 1940s origins and living in a very different world, and yet the sea continues to fire us with renewed inspiration and optimism which we hope to convey to you in our work. Either we’re working in our studios from studies or we’re out ‘en plein air’ frantically trying to capture the moment in often challenging circumstances. We can’t tell the sea to keep still and be quiet like a portrait painter might do with his model: it just doesn’t work, as Canute demonstrated. You need quick keen observation, good visual memory and a sound technique. To see how some of our paintings evolve, you can visit members’ demos being held during this exhibition. Ask any questions you want. We’re not bound by the Magic Circle! We continue to benefit from the inclusion of a higher proportion of non-members showing in our exhibitions, thus encouraging new ideas and hopefully creating younger members. We are also receiving more submissions from abroad, giving added interest to our shows. It all helps to keep us on our toes! Choosing non-members’ work for the show is the responsibility of our RSMA selection committees, a demanding job and one not taken lightly. How all pictures are to be hung is decided by our hanging committee. The actual hanging is carried out with astonishing speed and expertise by the FBA/Mall Galleries technical team. My thanks go out to all concerned. We are pleased to announce two new awards to tempt artists. From Daler-Rowney a prize of £500 worth of art materials of

the artist’s choice for an outstanding work on the theme of Coastal Geology by a member or non-member. Also, the FBA is offering a prize for an exceptional work by a non-member of 10 free submissions to FBA exhibitions, value up to £220. In recent years we have been blessed with a veritable explosion in the variety of new materials available to both painters and sculptors. Being a subject based society, we can and do take full advantage of these new materials, again giving added interest to our shows. I’m always aware that the sea as a subject is of particular appeal to the public. You can see in this show how we try to delve into every aspect of the marine environment, from ships to seashells and everything in between. Some of us cover a wide field, others tend to specialise. Many of us paint other subjects too, but we always come back to that magical sound, smell and light of the sea. Take your time to wander round the show. You may already have seen it online, but there’s nothing like seeing it in the flesh. You will hopefully find an item that makes the kind of impression that you can’t get out of your head: if you’re tempted to buy a work, try not to resist the temptation! This year we are honoured to have as our guest speaker Sally Kettle, the celebrated Atlantic rower and adventurer who knows the sea from truly close up. We very much look forward to hearing about her experiences at sea and how they’ve influenced her view on life.

Events Programme The Royal Society of Marine Artists presents a series of special events to complement the RSMA Annual Exhibition 2026: Painting Demonstration by Matthew Phinn Wednesday 16 September, 10.30am to 12.30pm Matthew Phinn will demonstrate a range of transparent watercolour techniques, including wet-in-wet and dry brush methods. He will talk about the materials he uses, including the different types of brushes, pigments, and paper, and explain how they influence the finished painting.

Painting Demonstrations by Roger Dellar Thursday 17 September, 11am and 2pm Roger Dellar will demonstrate in his usual relaxed way, taking current marine subjects and explaining his process, inviting the audience to ask questions. Printmaking Demonstration by Joshua Miles Friday 18 September, 10.30am to 12.30pm Joshua Miles will demonstrate the technique behind his four layer reduction linocut, Seashell Shore, on display at the RSMA Annual Exhibition. Joshua will bring props to show how he works, including the actual lino, plus some of his tools.

Painting Demonstration by Ann Flynn Friday 18 September, 2pm to 4pm Ann Flynn will demonstrate her approach to painting a seascape in oils. Light has

always been at the heart of Ann's work and throughout the demonstration she will reveal how she uses it to create atmosphere, depth, and vitality in her paintings.

Painting Demonstration by Dave West Friday 18 September, 2pm to 4pm For this demonstration, Dave West will be working in oil paint from an image of a scene from the west coast of Ireland, an area he has spent a lot of time painting with its distinctive harbours and boats. “Most of my work is executed ‘en plein air’ but I’m also happy enough bringing those learned skills into the studio and working from a photo reference. At the gallery, I will be aiming to create a compelling artwork by manipulating design and composition, selecting a limited palette of colours to create harmony and using a range of creative and interesting brushwork and mark-making.” – Dave West

Painting Demonstration by Tom Marsh Saturday 19 September, 2pm to 4pm Join plein air painter Tom Marsh as he shares his painting process, revealing how to paint with confidence, economy, and expressive simplicity, achieving more with fewer brushstrokes. Along the way, he'll offer practical advice on choosing and using equipment, along with plenty of tips and techniques to help anyone eager to experience the rewards of painting outdoors.

Events Programme (continued) Painting Demonstration by Paula Mitchell Tuesday 22 September, 10.30am to 12.30pm Paula Mitchell will be demonstrating a live work up from a recent plein air oil sketch of a scene from the banks of the River Thames.

Painting Demonstration by Geoff Hunt Friday 25 September, 11am to 2pm Join Geoff Hunt for a watercolour demonstration: either a plein-air painting, or else studio pieces of that character worked up from on-site sketches.

Working in oils, she will detail her original inspiration for the work, aspects of storytelling and her decision making process as she completes the painting for visitors to the RSMA Annual Exhibition at Mall Galleries.

Painting Demonstration by Srirangam Mohankumar Wednesday 23 September, 2pm to 4pm Srirangam Mohankumar’s subject will be a ‘Harbour and Beach’ scene. Watch as Kumar demonstrates how to make dynamic brush marks showing economy of application and accurate drawing of the elements, capturing the essence of the scene.

Painting Demonstrations by Patsy Moore Thursday 24 September, 10.30am and 2pm Patsy Moore will demonstrate twice, in watercolour, then oil. First session | 10.30am to 1pm | Venice - The Piazzetta: A watercolour of early morning light in Venice, simplifying elements in order to focus on the story Second session | 2pm to 4pm | A Quiet Backwater in Venice: A quiet, atmospheric scene in oil paint, exploring subtle colour changes and reflections

Prizes and Awards The Baltic Exchange Award

The Kenneth Denton Award

The Painters Online Award

For an outstanding work related to the maritime industry, selected by the Society’s President and the Chairman of the Baltic Exchange. Including works related to trade (ports, cargo vessels, etc.), ship building, safety at sea, the crew, the RNLI or NCI. The Baltic is an historic membership organisation at the heart of the international shipping industry, providing services relied upon by shipping markets worldwide.

For a work on the theme 'The Sea in all its Moods'. Made possible by the generosity of late member Kenneth Denton.

For the most deserving work, as judged by the magazine. The winner will be interviewed for a feature in The Artist magazine, print and digital edition.

Value: £2,000. The Murray’s Commercial Fishing Award For a work in any medium depicting commercial fishing. Value: £500 for the first prize and £100 for the second. The Charles Pears Award For an outstanding work in any medium by a non-member. Presented by the RSMA in memory of Charles Pears, founding member and first President. Value: £500. NEW Daler-Rowney Prize Where the Sea meets the Land: The RSMA is pleased to announce a new prize generously presented by Daler-Rowney. A prize of £500 worth of art materials, to be chosen by the winner. The prize will go to an outstanding work inspired by the sea as it ends its long journey towards the seashore. It will show particular emphasis on the surrounding geology it meets – rocks, cliffs, tidal caves etc. Knowledge, observation and imagination combine in this intriguing subject which lends itself to the expressive use of a wide range of media.

Value: £500. Robert Abraham Memorial Prize For the best oil painting by a full member of the RSMA at the bequest of the late member Lorraine Abraham. The annual award is dedicated to her husband Robert. Value £500.

The Classic Boat Prize The winner will receive a year’s subscription to Classic Boat and a profile feature in Classic Boat Magazine.

The Kenneth Denton Award 2026

The RSMA New Generation Award Awarded by the Society, the successful artist will receive £500. Open to all artists aged 35 or under at the close of submissions. The Sonia Robinson Award for the Best Small Painting For a work in any medium measuring no more than 30 cm along its longest dimension (excluding frame). Value £400. The Topbond Marine Award

For works depicting marine engineering or construction activities in harbours, estuaries or marine waters within the UK.

I have always had a great respect for the sea. Joining my parents on the Kent coast after the war, the sea was my playground. It fascinated me with all its changing moods. I would watch storms approaching with fascination and I am still trying to capture it in my work.

John Scott Martin RBA PPRSMA Time for Departure at Sunset – Sheerness The Baltic Exchange are proud to support this award for the painting most representative of ‘commercial maritime activity’ at this year’s RSMA Annual Exhibition. John Scott Martin’s oil ‘Time for Departure at Sunset – Sheerness’ wonderfully encapsulates the intense activity at this busy Kentish port on the Isle of Sheppey. Having witnessed the port in operation, tug boats and pilot vessels are constantly on the move and this work so vividly portrays a tug heading towards a Danish Reefer Container vessel to assist it out to sea on the evening tide. This area of Kent is renowned for its spectacular sunsets and these warm colours perfectly reflect the sometimes mystical colours experienced at certain times of year accentuating the contrast to the giant steel grey port side cranes. – Guy Hindley, Chair, Baltic Exchange Council

The RSMA New Generation Award 2026 Harsh Agrawal RI The Path to Portland Bill Harsh Agrawal is a plein-air landscape artist based in London, originally from a village called Rairangpur in India. Growing up in a conservative family, Harsh overcame numerous challenges to achieve success as an artist in the entertainment industry. His credits include "Coco", "Toy Story", "Avengers: End Game", "Star Wars" and other Oscar-winning films. Despite his success, Harsh’s passion for traditional painting led him to switch careers. With a leap of faith to focus on his art, Harsh now creates stunning plein-air landscape paintings that capture the beauty and stories of the natural world. He draws inspiration from his travels and everyday life experiences, to create captivating works of art. Harsh's work has been exhibited at various galleries & art fairs, including the Mall Galleries in London, the USA and Singapore. Harsh's journey has taught him the importance of determination, hard work and humility. Through his unique perspective and dedication to plein-air painting, Harsh continues to create captivating works that transport viewers to a certain location and evoke a sense of wonder and beauty.

Daler-Rowney Prize 2026 Cathy Veale Low Tide Reflection Cathy Veale is attracting increasing acclaim with her stunning coastal scenes. Renowned for her large watercolour seascapes, she takes inspiration from the beautiful Dorset coastline and from being a keen sailor. Her paintings depict a unique sense of texture, concentrating on the effects of light and colour on water. Cathy studied Graphic Design at the Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design from 1978 to 1981. After travelling extensively around Europe, America and New Zealand undertaking a variety of different artwork, she settled in Swanage in Dorset, her home town, where she continues to work as a full time professional artist. Cathy has had her work selected at the Roval West of England Academy, the National Laing exhibition and has regularly exhibited at Mall Galleries with the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours.

The RSMA features works by non-members – inspired by the sea Once again, we are delighted by the overall quality of work submitted by non-members. The selection process as always requires concentrated effort by members of our selection committee. We always realise that our judgements will bring forth both joy, but also disappointment. Decisions on the work entered are not taken lightly. This year we have viewed work from both national and international artists, confirming that the sea and ships are continued sources of influence for many of these pictures.
