The Maleny Show Society has released the entertainment program for the 2026 Maleny Agriculture Show, which will be held on the 29th and 30th of May, 2026, at the Maleny Showgrounds.

Chaos with e-bikes and e-scooters on our roads and footpaths
As your local MP, I know from your complaints that illegal e-bikes and e-scooters have caused chaos on our streets and in our community.
That is why I championed a full parliamentary inquiry to understand the mess left behind by the former Labor Government.
The work of the parliamentary committee was shaped by voices right here in the Glass House electorate - in our submissions and at our schools.
This week, the committee report was handed to the parliament and made several major recommendations which include:
• Introducing an age restriction of 16+ and having licensing requirements (learners).
• Amending laws to ensure that e-bike or PMD riders under the influence of alcohol or drugs can be tested.
• New powers to seize, impound and destroy illegal e-mobility devices.
• Changes to State Penalties Enforcement Registry to pursue 16- and 17-year-old riders and laws to pursue parents or guardians for penalties for those under 16.
• Penalties for anti-tampering and clear requirements for all retailers.
• A new offence for riding without due care and attention around pedestrians and speed limits of 10km/h on footpaths.

New meaning to horsepower - 1925
This photo was taken in 1925 in Bunya Street, Maleny during typical wet Maleny season. The first house on left was situated where the petrol station is n ow located. This actual house was part of the house that was demolished to make way for the petrol station.
It gives a new meaning to horsepower to propel a motor vehicle. This type of assistance to keep vehicles moving during the wet season was apparently very commonly seen according to an older Maleny resident. Just how things have changed in just 100 years!
Street Light comes to Maleny
Landsborough was originally known as Mellum Creek; the locality was first taken up for farm selections in 1871. The rudimentary settlement was used as a stopping point for Cobb and Co coaches making the run to the Gympie gold fields.
The magic of turning on street lighting in Queensland first happened in 1882 in Queen Street, Brisbane. People gathered to marvel at the bright white light.
Some Queensland towns like Croydon in the far north did not have access to electricity until 1980. Others like Richmond, Julia Creek, and Boulia had to wait until the 1950s to access electricity; whilst others like Boyne Island waited until 1960, and even today some pastoral areas are still powered by diesel generators.
When Landsborough township became the centre of the Landsborough Shire Council and after the council was set up in 1912, the town areas were beginning to become established. As a consequence, the Landsborough Shire Council decided that these areas needed street lighting, and so they proceeded to erect town lighting. Not the efficient system that we have today, but a gas system based on acetylene gas.
The first such light was located in Landsborough in the centre of Landsborough township. It was provided and lit by Landsborough and Maleny businessman, John Tytherleigh.
It was soon followed by a similar light for Maleny. This light was erected in Maple Street in front of Cooke Park on New Year’s Eve 1913. The lamp was lit by Ada Margaret Cooke, wife of A.C.K. Cooke.
At that time, Cooke Park was a cattle and calf sale yard. At this time, there were up to 32 wagon teams using the area to deliver, not only to the sale yards but general freight around
the growing township. The road width at the light was extra wide to allow bullock teams to turn around.
During this time, no wagon actually damaged the light.
It was not until the late 1930s that electricity came to Maleny. Until this, farms had their own generators, and they were used primarily for running their milking plants and some lighting.
The City Electric Light Company Construction Gang had been pushing through the countryside erecting the North Coast 33kV feeder from Brisbane, via Woodford, Maleny, and Montville to Nambour.
The original gas lamp can now be seen at the Maleny Historical Museum.
In 1888, Tamworth became the first town in Australia to supply electricity for street lighting. It then began to supply electricity to businesses and dwellings. Ironically, the rest of the world had only just begun to use electricity in 1882. Brisbane was the first city in Australia to use electricity commercially, and that was in 1883 in the Government Printing Office.

On March 6th, 1974 - Australian cricketing brothers Ian (145 & 121) and Greg Chappell (247no and 133) score unique twin centuries in drawn 1st Test vs New Zealand at Lancaster Park in Wellington and the first time they had won a Test match since 1969.
New Zealand achieved their first-ever Test win against Australia in the second match of a 1-1 drawn three-match series in New Zealand.
The test series was tied with both teams winning one game and the third game was a draw.
This is not the only time brothers made centuriesin the same test match.

Can the One Nation Party change the face of Australian Federal Politics?
Pauline Hanson has been a distinctive and influential figure in Australian federal politics since the 1990s, primarily through her leadership of Pauline Hanson's One Nation.
She brings to the political landscape a sense that she represents voters who often feel overlooked by the major parties.
Her platform has consistently focused on regional Australia, cost-of-living pressures, immigration policy, and concerns about national sovereignty, ensuring these issues remain part of parliamentary debate.
She has never been afraid to say what she believes and did not let woke opinions change her story.
The One Nation Party, through Pauline Hanson, can affect federal politics through the Senate balance of power. The minor parties and independents often hold decisive votes on legislation, and One Nation senators can leverage this position to negotiate amendments, delay bills, or draw attention to particular policy areas such as immigration, regional development, energy costs, and national sovereignty. As a minor-party leader, she challenges the dominance of the traditional two-party system, encouraging broader discussion and forcing major parties to respond to viewpoints outside their usual policy frameworks. This can strengthen democratic engagement by giving voters alternative choices and highlighting grassroots concerns.
Hanson’s direct communication style has helped mobilise political participation among supporters who value straightforward messaging. While her positions are often controversial, this visibility ensures that debates about national identity, regional inequality, and government accountability remain prominent within federal politics, contributing to a more diverse and contested democratic environment.
Electorally, Hanson’s presence can fragment the conservative vote, particularly in regional Queensland and parts of rural Australia. Unfortunately, this can lead to negative actions being taken by the major parties trying to keep on side with voters who believe that they have been forgotten or left out. Whilst the major parties will still dominate the formation of the governing party, they could be steered off course just trying to keep favour with minor parties. This usually causes a disservice to the future of Australia as it subdues long term plannijng and provision of major infrastructure.

Truthful Jones said that he was flying from Brisbane to Perth to visit his son and daughter-in-law.
Unexpectedly, the plane was diverted to Adelaide along the way because of bad weather. The flight attendant explained that there would be a delay, and if the passengers wanted to get off the aircraft and stretch their legs. The plane would reboard in about 50 minutes.
Everybody got off the plane except one lady who was blind. One man did noticed her as he walked by and could tell the lady was blind because her Seeing Eye dog lay quietly underneath the seats in front of her throughout the entire flight.
He could also tell she had flown this very flight before because the pilot approached her, and calling her by name, said, “Kathy, we are in Adelaide for almost an hour. Would you like to get off and stretch your legs?”
The blind lady replied, “No thanks, but maybe my dog would like to stretch his legs.” All the people in the gate area came to a complete standstill when they looked up and saw the pilot walk off the plane with a See-ing Eye dog! The pilot was even wearing sun-glasses.
People scattered. They not only tried to change planes, but they were trying to change airlines!

Crow’s Ash tree on Maleny Enclave to go!
Maleny Enclave is a housing development being developed on what was previously Hopper’s dairy farm, which is being developed into an estate consisting of 74 residential lots ranging from 800sqm to 1728sqm.
A further small adjacent parcel of land off Tallowwood Drive in a separate cul-de-sac will also be developed to provide a future 15 home sites.
Situated on the perimeter of this land is a mature crow’s ash tree overlooking the former dairy paddocks. Whilst it remains standing for now, a council ecological report deeming it of “nil” environmental value thus clearing the way for its removal. A Sunshine Coast Council spokesperson said that the removal decision was made under code-assessable rules limiting what the council could do to save the tree. No public notification of works is required, so the tree will be removed in the course of the development.
Stevie & his mate, Carter from Maleny visit a Llama at Engle End Farm, in the Maleny countryside
On a bright Saturday morning in the Maleny countryside, when the mist still clung gently to the rolling green hills, a five-year-old boy named Carter stepped out of the car with his best mate close at his heels. Carter had short brown hair that never quite stayed neat, no matter how often his mum combed it, and eyes that sparkled with curiosity. At his side trotted Stevie, a tan dachshund with long
ears, short legs, and a tail that wagged whenever adventure was near.
They had come to visit a small farm, Engle End Farm tucked away behind wooden fences and tall gum trees. Carter had been thinking about this day all week, because today he was going to meet a llama. He clutched a brown paper bag filled with bright orange carrots, gripping it carefully as if it were treasure. Stevie sniffed the air, his nose twitching as new country smells drifted past—grass, animals, and the promise of something exciting.

As they walked toward the paddock, Carter spotted the llama straight away. It stood calmly near the fence, tall and woolly, with gentle eyes and a curious tilt to its head. Carter stopped in his tracks, suddenly very quiet.
Stevie, sensing the moment, sat beside him and looked up, as if to say, “Well, this is something new.”
The farmer opened the gate and showed Carter how to hold out a carrot flat in his hand. Carter’s heart beat fast as he stepped closer. The llama leaned forward, its

soft nose brushing Carter’s fingers before carefully taking the carrot. Carter burst into laughter, a clear, happy sound that echoed across the paddock.
quickly scooped it up, only to be gently reminded that the carrots were for the llama. Stevie sat back obediently, looking slightly disappointed but still very pleased to be part of the day.
Carter pointed at the llama excitedly and proudly.
Stevie wagged his tail harder, standing on his back legs for a better look. He gave a small, hopeful bark, though the llama simply blinked at him and went back to chewing. Carter reached into the bag and pulled out another carrot, offering it with more confidence this time. Again, the llama accepted it, slow and gentle.
Before long, Carter and Stevie had settled into a comfortable rhythm. Carter fed the carrots one by one, talking, in his own way, to the llama as if they were old friends. He told it about his favourite toys, his kindergarten class, and how Stevie was his mate. The llama listened quietly, chewing and blinking, perfectly content.
Stevie explored the grass near Carter’s feet, occasionally glancing up to make sure he wasn’t missing anything important. Once, when Carter dropped a carrot, Stevie
The sun climbed higher, warming the paddock and turning the hills a deeper shade of green. Birds called from the trees, and a light breeze rustled the grass. Carter leaned against the fence, his arm around Stevie’s neck, feeling happy and safe. The llama stood nearby, calm and full, watching them with quiet interest.
Next was the turn of the alpacas to join in the fun and a snack of carrots. They too liked to be in the company of Carter and his friendly dog.
Then Carter saw a donkey standing with his head over the fence. The donkey too had spotted the carrots that Carter had been feeding the llamas. The donkey gave out a loud “‘hee-haw' which led Carter and his bag of carrots over to the fence.
The donkey was very happy to be given some carrots too. The owner of the donkey placed a halter on the donkey whose name was Eeyore and led him out onto the paddock. Carter took the halter and led the donkey around and around the paddock. Stevie the dachshund dog ran happily along beside the pair, wagging his tail in delight.

llamas, the donkeys, the alpacas all a small wave. “Bye,” he said. “Thanks for being my friends.”
“Don’t worry, I will be back sometime to see you all again and I will bring a bigger bag of carrots next time.” said Carter excitedly. As they walked back toward the car, Carter skipped along the path, Stevie trotting beside him, both tired and content. The Maleny countryside seemed to glow around them, as if it, too, had enjoyed the simple happiness of a boy, his dog, and the gentle animals sharing a perfect day together.

Engle End Farm is located approximately 10 kms west of the magical town of Maleny on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. It was first established in 2011 The goal of owners Scot and Sarah, is to run a self sufficient,off grid farm and household. At Engle End Farm both are involved in every step: from the breeding of high quality Alpacas and shearing to fleece processing.

Buying & Selling Residential Property in Queensland Cooling-off period

Most residential property sales in Queensland are subject to a buyer’s cooling-off period of five (5) business days commencing on the date a buyer or their lawyer receives a copy of the contract signed by both a buyer and a seller.
If you as a buyer decide not to proceed within that period, you must give notice to the seller in the specified way to cancel the contract.

Australia’s fatal commercial airliner accidents are concentrated in the piston-andturboprop era (1930s–1960s), when navigation, weather forecasting, airframe fatigue understanding and cockpit recording were less advanced than today.
Whilst it isn’t a commercial airline crash, it is still worth mentioning. On the 14th of June 1943, the biggest plane crash in Australia by death toll was at Bakers Creek, just 8 kilometres south of Mackay. It happened when a United States Army Air Forces B-17 Flying Fortress named “Pamela” crashed shortly after takeoff from Mackay, killing 40 people and leaving one survivor.
It remains the most deadly aircraft crash on Australian soil. It was on its way back to the frontline in New Guinea.
Among the worst early civil aviation disasters was that of the Kyeema, a National Australian Airlines passenger plane that smashed into Mount Dandenong in 1938 when its pilots thought it was on final approach to Essendon Airport.
All 18 people on board died. The Douglas DC-2 had left Adelaide on the morning of October 25, its passengers
including a federal parliamentarian, Charles Hawker, three high-profile South Australian winemakers - Hugo Grant, Tom Hardy, and Sidney Hill Smith - a honeymoon couple, and several barristers.
The flight crew apparently mistook Sunbury for Daylesford, putting them 30 kilometres off course before, in heavy cloud, they hit the western slopes of Mount Dandenong. A subsequent royal commission saw regulations introduced requiring flight checking officers to monitor flights, weather, and alternative landing options.
The deadliest peacetime air disaster in Australia was on the 26th June 1950 when an Australian National Airways Douglas DC-4 crashed after it departed from Perth Airport at 9:55 pm for the eight-hour flight to Adelaide. On board were 24 passengers, three pilots, and two air hostesses, which also resulted in 29 fatalities.
On the 26th June, 1950, a Douglas DC-4 Skymaster operated by Australian National Airlines crashed about 32 nautical miles from take-off from Perth Airport, killing 28 of its 29
passengers and crew. The sole survivor died six days later.
An inquiry could not determine the cause of this disaster, either, though some investigators suspected water in the fuel tank.
Trans-Australia Airlines (TAA) Flight 538 smashed into the sea off Mackay, Queensland, about 10 pm on June 10, 1960. It was a clear, moonlit night, though the plane had earlier made two aborted attempts to land because of low fog. It had circled Mackay, waiting for the fog to clear, and simply disappeared after the allclear had been given.
No one aboard the Fokker Friendship survived the crash.
The plane had a number of students returning home from a private school in Brisbane for sechho holidays. Some people awaiting the plans said they could see happy faces at the plane windows on the two aborted landing attempts.
On the 31st December, 1968, a Vickers Viscount operated by MacRobertson-Miller Airlines lost its right wing in flight near Port Hedland, Western Australia.

The plane was flying from Perth to Port Hedland when more than half the wing and an engine separated from the craft, which crashed about 50 kilometres from its destination.

At about 1.30 p.m. on October 30th, 1969, a Sikorsky S58B helicopter owned by Helicopter Utilities Pty Ltd of Sydney crashed on takeoff from Gladstone Airport. Although a number of

passengers suffered minor injuries, all 12 passengers and two crew on board escaped without serious injuries.
The helicopter was totally destroyed by an ensuing fire.
On the 7th of May, 2005, 15 people lost their lives when a Fairchild Swearingen Metroliner commuter aircraft crashed near Lockhart River in far-north Queensland.
An inquiry found pilot error was to blame. The plane, owned by Transair Ltd and operated by Aerotopics, was approaching to land at Lockhart River Airport when it struck a ridge known as South Pap and crashed, killing all aboard.
In spite of the above-mentioned commercial aircraft safety in Australia is extremely high, with Australia having one of the world's best safety records due to strict regulations, rigorous oversight, and a culture that prioritises safety.
Today the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), regulations are stringent and modern aircraft are equipped with multiple layers of safety backups, and the industry works to ensure continuous improvements are made and in Australia flying is statistically one of the safest modes of transport.
One fact that surprised me was that Virgin Australia delivered the best results across the board for service in 2025, with a 76.9% ontime arrival rate, 77.7% on-time departure rate and just 0.9% cancellation rate, over 1% lower than the majors Jetstar and Qantas.
So, go ahead and fly - just enjoy the flight.

Tell that to those who live on this pristine island langusihing in the Southern Pacific Ocean. To them life on Norfolk Island is defined by a relaxed, safe, and close-knit community atmosphere, characterized by stunning natural beauty, including pristine beaches like Emily Bay and lush pine forests. That is until the Maleny Seniors Citizens Group invaded and began to create havoc on this pristine semi-tropical island.
Norfolk Island is a remote, subtropical Australian external territory in the South Pacific, located roughly 1,400 km east of mainland Australia. The island has a relaxed lifestyle for the roughly 2,000 residents who rely mainly on the tourist trade, with about 35,000 tourists visiting each year.
It has a unique culture blended from British and Tahitian roots, with its own language, Norfuk, although a couple of Malenyites tried to change the local language by adding a few of their own “local Maleny words”.
As you make your way around the winding roads of Norfolk Island, it is obligatory for drivers to give each other a friendly wave, which involves lifting one or two fingers from the steering wheel as their cars pass, driving no more than 50km per hour, and giving way to the cows who freely roam.
This gesture means you’re seen and welcome here. Again, the wave was misinterpreted, and a different wave was returned, but with the strong finger extended.

with so much natural beauty to see and historical buildings to explore - it has a past history where convict life was severe and often brutal. Thankfully, not so on this visit.

Beloved Australian actress
Lorraine Bayly dies
Beloved Australian actress Lorraine Bayly has died at the age of 89 after 'gruelling' health issues. The Sullivan’s star passed away recently at a care home in Sydney.
She was a familiar face, everyone’s mother, and a must-view during the 1970s as Grace Sullivan in The Sullivans, a drama series set during the Second World War.
She was best known for her roles as: The Man from Snowy River as Rosemary Hume
The Sullivans as Grace Sullivan Carson's Law as Jennifer Carson Neighbours as Faye Hudson
Play School as Presenter
But these were just a few!
Bayly won numerous awards, including two Silver Logies in 1978 and 1979 for Most Popular Actress in The Sullivans. R.I.P. Lorraine + Thanks.

Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.
You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.
Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.
An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, flood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.
Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.
Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..

The Maleny Visitor Information Centre is a not for profit, long-standing, independent community service, run by volunteers. We are situated in the hub of the town with the office front in the centre of the main street at 2/23 Maple Street, Maleny. The open plan and entrance to the centre provide a friendly welcome to our many information services for Maleny and the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.
The Centre runs with the very welcome financial support of the Sunshine Coast Council. Our major affiliations are with Hinterland Tourism, and Maleny Commerce. Many local businesses also provide us with great support.

Debutante balls (Deb Balls) in 1950s in Australia were the cornerstone of social life, acting as a "coming-of-age" tradition where young women were formally introduced to society. The Debutantes were usually young women, typically aged between 16 and 18 and were presented to a high-ranking dignitary, such as a mayor, archbishop, or local member of parliament.
These events were highly structured, frequently held in local town halls or community centers, and often served as fundraisers for local charities or RSL branches!
