Maleny Muscle on the Mountain 2026 Cancelled due to weather and Maleny Show-Ground conditions!
The Sunshine Coast Hinterland's favourite automotive event, Muscle on the Mountain, which was to be held on Sunday, 5 July 2026, at the Maleny Showgrounds, has been cancelled.
This 13th annual Show & Shine attracts classic, vintage, muscle, hot rod, custom, and modern performance vehicles from across South East Queensland, and they too will be disappointed. The good news is that an alternate date later in the year will be decided on and advised.
We know that this is more than just a car show; Muscle on the Mountain is a community fundraising event supporting men's health and raising funds for prostate cancer awareness. Every vehicle on display and every visitor through the gate helps contribute to an important cause, making the event one where passion for cars meets community spirit.
Whether you're a lifelong motoring enthusiast, a weekend cruiser, or simply looking for a great family day out in beautiful Maleny, there's something for everyone, but not this weekend. But it will still be on a later date.
The combination of spectacular vehicles, friendly locals, and a worthy cause has made Muscle on the Mountain one of Queensland's most anticipated regional Show & Shine events, and the extra wait will be worthwhile.

Turning household waste into electricity
On the 19th May, 2026 the Sunshine Coast Council and its partner, LMS Energy opened a new renewable energy facility will turn landfill gas into clean energy and slash greenhouse gas emissions by up to 55,000 tonnes per year. The facility at the Northern Waste Precinct in Bli Bli will generate enough renewable electricity to power 1,500 homes, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The facility will generate around 9,000 megawatt hours of renewable energy each year and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 55,000 tonnes annually – that’s the equivalent of taking 22,000 cars off the road.
The new facility strengthens Council’s renewable energy network and complements the Sunshine Coast Solar Farm and the existing renewable energy operation at the Caloundra Landfill.

On this day in history July 3rd
The Queensland Police Special Bureau was formed on 30 July 1940 and renamed Special Branch on 7 April 1948. Through the 1950s and 1960s, it was commonly believed that two police commissioners, Commissioner Bishop and Lewis, led a band of corrupt police.
This eventually led to an inquiry into police corruption led by District Court Judge, Mr. Tony Fitzgerald.
The Fitzgerald report was submitted on 3rd July 1989. As a result, a number of high-profile politicians were charged with crimes, and Queensland Police Commissioner Terry Lewis was charged with corruption.
Detective Sergeant Jack Herbert had been the bagman, collecting bribes for police commissioner Terry Lewis from 1980. Lewis himself had been a bagman for former commissioner Francis Bischof. Lewis was convicted and subsequently stripped of his knighthood.
This led to local member, Mike Ahern, becoming the new Premier after BjelkePetersen was deposed by his own party.
There had always been bad blood between Bjelke-Petersen and Ahern over religion. As Premier, Ahern faced a National Party that was increasingly driven by Bjelke-Petersen supporters.

Small businesses dying a slow death
Barbeques Galore to close more than 60 stores, with hundreds of workers facing redundancy. This business was founded in Sydney in 1977. Lincraft also closed down in June 2026 It has traded since 1938. Locally Trailers 2000 closed down in June 2026 after trading for 30 years. It started business in Maleny. These are just some other small to medium size business to close down leaving not many surviving chainstores in Australia. Businesses that are left are owned by multi national franchise or under Wesfarmers or similar conglomerates.
My opinion on this is that our politicians and the ACCC are "asleep at the wheel". The near monopoly of Bunnings across so many areas continues to damage the SME independent retail sector. Nursery, auto, BBQ, pool and pet stores are all under threat from one operator with excessive market power.
The ACCC believes that their job is only to look out for the consumer. Unfortunately, the consumer will always suffer where there is little or no competition.
Large retail chains such as Bunnings have transformed the Australian hardware market by offering customers a huge range of products, convenient locations, and highly competitive prices. While these benefits are attractive to consumers, they have created significant challenges for smaller, independently owned businesses. Large corporations enjoy economies of scale that small businesses simply cannot match. Because Bunnings buys products in enormous quantities, it can negotiate lower prices from suppliers and pass some of these savings on to customers. Small hardware stores often pay more for the same products, making it difficult to compete on price.
Big businesses also have substantial advertising budgets and strong brand recognition. National television campaigns, online advertising, and loyalty programs continually attract customers. In contrast, small businesses usually have limited marketing resources and struggle to gain the same level of exposure.
As customers increasingly shop at major retailers, smaller businesses often experience declining sales and reduced profits. This often results in those businesses closing their doors entirely. The loss of small businesses can have a negative impact on local communities by reducing employment opportunities and limiting consumer choice.
When these businesses disappear, communities lose more than just a shop—they lose local expertise and important community connections and this is contributing to the decline of Australia's small businesses and changing the character of local communities.

Truthful tells us that he recently went back to Ireland to visit some rellies. Two of them were working for the city public works department and he visited them where they were working.
One would dig a hole and the other would follow behind him and fill the hole in. They worked up one side of the street, then down the other, then moved on to the next street, working furiously all day without rest, one man digging a hole, the other filling it in again.
Truthful said he was amazed at their hard work, but couldn't understand what they were doing. He said to the the hole digger, "I'm impressed by the effort you two are putting in to your work, but I don't get it - why do you dig a hole, only to have your partner follow behind and fill it up again?"
The hole digger wiped his brow and sighed, "Well, I suppose it probably looks odd because we dug a grand hole, but normally we are a three-person team. But today, Mick, the lad who plants the trees called in sick.”

Stevie & Cyril decide to explore Maple Street Maleny
he people of Maleny were used to strange sights. They had seen tourists trying to pat cows, backpackers asking where the beach was, and city people paying nine dollars for organic kale chips. But nothing — absolutely nothing — prepared them for what rolled down Maple Street one sunny Thursday morning.
At precisely 10:15 a.m., The Late Linda appeared on her dark blue mobility
scooter like the captain of a very unusual parade.
Linda, despite being very much alive, had carried the nickname “The Late Linda” for over thirty years because she was late to absolutely everything. Weddings, birthdays, church raffles, dentist appointments — Linda once arrived so late to a bingo night the hall was already being cleaned. Linda’s best friend Lorraine once said, “I worry that Linda will be late for her own funeral.” Nobody remembered how the nickname started, but it stuck harder than chewing gum on hot bitumen.
Her scooter hummed proudly along the main street beneath a flapping Australian flag mounted on the back. Behind the scooter rattled two four-wheeled garden carts connected together with an alarming collection of rope, fencing wire, and what looked suspiciously like an old dog lead.
In the first cart sat Stevie, a tan dachshund with short legs, long ears, and the confidence of a pub owner. Stevie stood with his front paws on the edge of the cart, nose twitching furiously as he inspected every bakery, butcher shop, and passing shopper.
The second cart was where things became complicated.
Rising slowly over the rim like a submarine surfacing in wartime came the head of Cyril, Stevie’s best mate and a fully-grown three-metre carpet snake.
Cyril blinked lazily at the crowd.
The crowd blinked back.
Outside the bakery, old Mavis Henderson dropped her vanilla slice directly onto her sandals.
“My good lord,” she whispered.
Beside her, Trevor the butcher froze halfway through carrying a tray of sausages.
“Is… is that snake looking at me?” he asked.

Three volunteer ladies from the Maleny Information Centre in their green shirts came out their doorway and were aghast. They called out to the late Linda: “Take that feral pair away, we don’t want to frighten out friendly tourists away.”
Meanwhile Linda drove onward completely unconcerned, one hand steering while the other adjusted the volume on a tiny portable radio playing Slim Dusty songs.
“Morning everyone!” she called cheerfully. The shoppers gave the sort of nervous wave normally reserved for hostage situations.
Stevie barked happily at a pigeon.
Cyril continued calmly surveying the street like a reptilian king inspecting his kingdom.
A young tourist from Brisbane cautiously approached.
“Excuse me, ma’am… is that snake dangerous?”
Linda looked genuinely offended.
“Dangerous? Cyril’s softer than a custard tart. Aren’t you, mate?”
Cyril flicked his tongue.
The tourist stepped backwards so quickly he nearly walked into a parking meter.
Further up the street, two elderly ladies exiting the pharmacy spotted Cyril and immediately grabbed each other’s arms.
“Oh heavens,” gasped one.
“It’s probably escaped from the zoo,” whispered the other.
Linda parked briefly outside the newsagency while Stevie received pats from brave locals. Cyril, meanwhile, caused a complete traffic jam of
pedestrians trying to pretend they were not absolutely terrified.
One man attempted to act casual while inching behind a rubbish bin.
Another crossed the street so suddenly he forgot his wife was still standing on the other footpath.

She was not impressed that his only thought was for hi own safety.
Even the local magpies seemed uncertain.
The funniest part was that Cyril himself appeared entirely uninterested in causing drama. He simply rested his enormous head on the edge of the cart while Stevie occasionally licked him on the nose like they were lifelong brothers.
“Funny little pair, aren’t they?” Linda chuckled. Nobody knew the correct response to that sentence.
At the café, a waitress cautiously leaned out the doorway.
“Would… would the snake like water?”
Linda nodded. “Good idea. Stevie likes a puppuccino too.”
The waitress disappeared inside and returned carrying two bowls with the careful concentration of someone transporting unstable explosives.
By now half the town had stopped to stare. Phones came out. Photos were taken.
Children pointed excitedly.
One old farmer squinted at Cyril for nearly a full minute before announcing, “Well… at least it’s not a crocodile.”
Which, strangely enough, made everyone feel slightly better.
After finishing their grand tour of the street, Linda restarted the scooter.
“Come on boys,” she said. “Time for lunch.”
Stevie barked once and they all happily headed off towards home.

You have gone to the expense of building a new fence. - now preserve it
Treated pine is one of the most versatile and affordable timber options for outdoor constructions such as fences and decks. The strength and reliability of your pine timber are essential for any outdoor project. However, moisture can quietly undermine that strength over time.
When water builds up inside the timber, it weakens the structure and increases the risk of decay or even collapse. Soil and standing water are major contributors to timber decay. When treated pine is in direct contact with damp ground, it can remain saturated for extended periods, increasing the risk of rot and fungal growth due to excess moisture
Regular inspections help identify early signs of moisture damage or rot before they become serious issues.
Ignoring it can lead to widespread damage and structural issues that are much harder to fix.
Maintaining a treated pine fence involves regular cleaning (every 6–12 months), applying a protective sealant or stain every 2–3 years to prevent UV/moisture damage, and keeping foliage trimmed to prevent rot.
Inspect for damage, rot, or termite activity periodically and keep soil away from the timber to ensure longevity.
Catching the early signs of timber rot can prevent costly repairs later. Look for areas that feel soft or spongy to the touch, particularly around joints and edges, as these are signs of affected wood .
Discolouration, cracking, or visible fungal growth are also warning signs that moisture has begun to damage the wood. If you notice these symptoms, begin treatment immediately.
Addressing wet rot early often means a minor repair.
Key Maintenance Steps:
• Clean Regularly: Hose down the fence regularly to remove dirt, debris, and mildew. For better results, use a softbristled brush with a mild cleaner or a lowpressure power wash to prevent surface damage.
• Apply Sealant/Stain: Protect the pine from water damage, fading, and shrinking by applying a quality penetrating oil-based sealant or stain every 2–3 years.
• Prevent Soil Contact: Ensure the pine is not in direct contact with damp soil to avoid rot, using gravel or concrete footings to allow for drainage.
• Keep Plants Trimmed: Trim back shrubs and vines at least 30cm away from the fence to reduce moisture retention and prevent damage.
• Inspect and Repair: Check for warped, loose, or damaged boards, as well as broken fasteners. Treat or replace affected timber promptly to prevent structural failure
Check out those fences before timber rot sets in thus making the job a lot more expensive.

Buying a residential property is a major financial transaction for most people. So, it’s vital you seek the advice of your solicitor before you sign any contract. With increased numbers of residential properties changing hands in Queensland and a recently revised standard residential contract we thought this was a great time to review a few residential contract basics.
Disclosure obligations
As a seller of residential property, you are required by law to disclose certain information to a buyer before they enter into a contract. There may be penalties for failure to do so additionally a buyer may be able to terminate the contract and recover compensation from you.
Some examples include the following, you must:
give a disclosure notice to a prospective buyer if the property has a pool and there is no pool safety certificate; disclose all encumbrances affecting the property; notify a buyer if the property is recorded on the contaminated land or environmental management register; or if there is an application or order about a tree on the property.
Additionally, before settlement you must: advise a buyer whether the property has compliant smoke alarms;
an approved electricity safety switch;
obtain and give a buyer with a clearance certificate from the Australian Taxation Office; and
provide a pool safety certificate or notice of no pool safety certificate.
If you’re selling a residential unit or townhouse, you must also provide the buyer with information about the body corporate.
Your solicitor will assist you to ensure you satisfy all these disclosure requirements.

My Lost Sister “I had to say Goodbye”
Some time agoI received this letter from one of our readers. Reading the 2025 and 2026 death figures on Queensland roads, the worst in nearly two decades, to me it seams a good time to repeat this message.
To me the letter was a very “to the point”, pouring out of the heart concerning a sad incident in her life that today is becoming a part of too many peopleʼs life. What can one say to the writer?
Please think a little about how your “small and unthinking” actions can change other peopleʼs life forever. Drivers, please live up to your responsibilities when you are behind the steering wheel of a motor vehicle. It all happens in the “blink of an eye” but destroys lives forever!
Thanks to the writer for sharing her loss with us as a means of making us understand how our actions change other peopleʼs lives.
Ihad to say goodbye to my sister about seven months ago. I believe I have kept this part of my life locked up tight in my mind. Clear in the bad to the point of where no one could break it unless I opened it up. And I guess I'm ready to open up about it, to talk about what I had done the day she had passed away.
She was in a traffic accident with my aunt because of a drunk driver. They both were rushed to the hospital at 9:00 pm on April 6th. The hospital that they were sent to wasn't a very big hospital, so they were transported to another bigger hospital that had more technology, I think that's what you would call it. I had no idea any of this was going on until my uncle came to get me to take me to the hospital to stay with my aunt and sister.
They both were in critical condition, both on the respirators, feeding tubes, heart monitors, a ton of IV's in both of them. Now when I came in and saw my aunt, I was upset because my uncle had told me what had happened. She didn't look so good. I didn't know the human body could take so much. Her whole face looked like it was melted off of her face, but she wasn't burned. Her face had gone
through the windscreen (not wearing a seat belt), both of her arms were broken, she had a broken neck and back, and she had broken her femur bone. She was in a coma.
I could feel the tears coming down my cheeks; just the thought of what my sister was going to look like was just breaking me apart inside of me.
The nurse took me to where they were keeping my sister. I didn't think she was my sister. I thought it was all a dream. Her face was so swollen. She was in her car seat up front. If she wasn't in the front seat, she might have been a little better; she looked so defeated. So hurt, and so weak.
She was so broken.
She was just as bad as my aunt. She had four fractures to her skull. The doctors told me that she was lucky to even last through the night. I was thinking the worst; so many things were in my mind.
I stayed with her all night, dreading just the worst, but also praying to god that she made it, not just for the day, but for the rest of her life. I didn't sleep at all; I stayed up all night talking to her, kissing her forehead. Just hoping. See next Page

The next morning, my uncle came in; he didn't look so good. He came in and told me my aunt had passed away during the night. I just started crying; it was so horrible to actually see him cry over his wife; he never acted like he enjoyed her at all.
After that, I was in a state of shock. Thinking that my sister wasn't going to make it. But she did. My uncle left; what did he care about his wife? She just died, and my sister was fighting for her life.
Her life of barely a year. I hate that he didn't stay with me. The nurses were pissed off at him for leaving because he had to sign things that were important; he never came back, so I was forced to sign them; I really didn't even know what I was doing with everything going on.
I never left my sister's room. I didn't eat, sleep, bathe; just nothing; I was too concerned about her. I talked to her all the time. I could see her little eyes moving in her eye sockets, and the nurses told me that was a good sign.
I prayed even harder. But it wasn't hard enough. I was sitting there right beside her when she started having a seizure. It was the scariest thing I had ever seen in my whole life. I didn't know what to do; I started screaming for the nurses and the doctors. They came in and stabilised her.

It was the worst thing I have ever had to do in my whole life. I felt her last breath and her last heartbeat. I didn't even cry; I felt that if she felt me cry, she would know I was devastated that I was weak. I held everything in. I didn't want her to know that. I kissed her goodbye and I told her that I loved her. I sat with her for thirty minutes. If anyone tried coming in, I told them to please leave.
I know that was stupid; I just wanted to be with my sister alone. I sat there looking at her body. Just wishing it was all a dream. I told her goodbye for the last time thirty minutes later, and I walked out the door.
I didn't want my sister to be dead. I didn't believe she was gone. I didn't want her to be gone. They sent a counsellor to sit with me. Talk to me, and pray with me. But why did I have to pray when she was already gone??
I was in a state of just numbness; this just made me feel like the worst person ever. I didn't know what I was going to do. The doctor came in and told me in the nicest way ever and told me that if my sister ever woke up, she wouldn't be normal. That it might just be best if we took her off everything. I never in my dreams ever thought someone would ever even ask me to take someone off something that was saving their life. He left and let me think things through.
I told him an hour later that I wanted him to do it. I didn't want my little sister to suffer anymore. But I had him take everything off of her: the feeding tube,
I don't know; maybe they thought it would make me feel better. It didn't. I was with my sister from the time she was born. It was like I had just lost my own child, even though she was my sister. People tell me that I have no reason to feel that. But I was the one who raised her. The one who taught her how to walk, how to talk, only if it was just a few words. I was the one who played with her, stayed up with her, held her when she was crying.
I remember when she called me Mama. I guess that isn't a reason to think that I had lost a child. But I don't care what people think; she was like a child to me.
To this day, it feels like it's my fault that she died. Because I told the doctors to take her off the machines. It's just a horrible feeling I have deep inside of me. I had to say goodbye to a little girl that was so important to me.
My sister was the gift I never asked for but always wanted. I miss her still to this day. I wish she didn't have to go, but she did leave us - heartbroken.

More laws to cover E-bikes & E-scooters in Queensland
The Queensland Government is moving to introduce sweeping 2026 reforms for e-mobility vehicles. This comes after 12 deaths and more than 6,300 hospital presentations linked to e-mobility incidents in the past year alone.
Of the injury presentations, 1,100 involved children under 16, with almost a third of riders travelling above the 25 km/h limit when injured.
The reforms include mandatory rider licensing, a minimum age of 16 for e-bikes, and a 10km/h speed limit on footpaths. These laws, which require a learner’s licence, aim to address safety.
Police will get powers to seize illegal devices, particularly those with motors over 250W. They will also gain the authority to conduct random breath tests, seize devices on first offence, and pursue penalties through the State Penalties Enforcement Registry. Parents may be held liable when minors breach regulations.

Maleny Tennis Club celebrates 100 years
On May 3rd a milestone for the Maleny Tennis Club was celebrated as it turned 100 years.
The club was formed in April 1926 at the Maleny Show-grounds and has survived there for the whole 100 years/.
The early courts were clay, often prepared and maintained by dedicated volunteers like Wally Petersen. Today the four flood-lit courts are synthetic grass.

Maleny SES looking for volunteers
Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.
You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.
Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.
An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, flood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.
Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.
Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..

The Maleny Visitor Information Centre is a not for profit, long-standing, independent community service, run by volunteers. The Centre is a ticket selling agency for Maleny Film Society movie screenings along with a range of quality souvenirs and postcards, with a distinctively Maleny flavour along with information about places and events around the area.

On December 12, 1960, the Governor of Queensland Sir Henry Abel Smith officially opened Mary Cairncross Reserve. A guard of honour of Maleny Girl Guides, Cubs and Scouts, Boys Brigade and Girls Life Brigade and Junior Red Cross attended on the special day. Sir Henry Abel Smith took the time to speak to every little guard of honour on that day and those on the special platform included the surviving donor of the land, Miss Elizabeth “Bessie” Thynne..
