Every ve years, the Australian Bureau of Statistics counts every person and household in Australia. This is called the Census of Population and Housing. Census night in 2026 is August 11th, and every person, young and old, must be accounted for. The census is one of the most important sources of information about Australia and its people. Conducted every ve years by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), it provides a detailed snapshot of the nation's population, where people live, and how communities are changing. The information collected helps governments, businesses, researchers, and community organisations make informed decisions that affect the lives of all Australians. Australia's ve-yearly census is far more than a simple population count. It is a vital planning tool that helps shape the nation's future. Accurate population gures allow federal, state, and local governments to determine where new schools, hospitals, roads, aged care facilities, Stevie + Cyril from Maleny Paint and public transport services complete their census are most needed. It then gives time for the prudent government and local government to start providing those facilities. Census data is not only for governments. Businesses also bene t from census information. Companies also use census data to identify growing communities, understand customer needs, select locations for new stores, and plan future investments. There used to be a saying; “a penny for your thoughts”. Well, no longer does it apply because in 1966 decimal currency became legal currency in Australia.

To complete the census, the Australian Bureau of Statistics is taking a digital- rst approach for 2026. Most households will get a letter with instructions to complete the Census online. This will include a Census number and a temporary password. So, look out for instructions in the mail to help you to complete your Census.

It was rst minted in Australia in 1911 with the last minted in 1964.

For the rst time, the ABS is partnering with Services Australia on a new option for people to subscribe to updates and access the 2026 Census online through their myGov account. Since the rst National Census in 1911, topics have changed on the Census form to re ect contemporary views and emerging data needs..

Around Glass house Electorate with Mr Andrew Powell M.P. Joyce Newton OAM Memorial Bursary It is that time of year again when I encourage local Year 10, 11 and 12 students to apply for the 2026 Joyce Newton OAM Memorial Bursary. Established in 2019, this annual bursary honours the life and legacy of the late Joyce Newton OAM, a respected educator, community advocate, and passionate contributor to civic life in Maleny and the broader hinterland region. This bursary was created to recognise Joyce's extraordinary contribution to the community while supporting the next generation of local leaders as they pursue further education and training after school and is open to Year 10, 11 and 12 students who reside in the electorate of Glass House and are planning to undertake further study, training, or an apprenticeship following their high school graduation. This year, I have expanded the bursary to include a second award stream recognising students pursuing a trade career pathway, alongside the existing academic pathway award.

Mary Cairncross Butter y Walk Opened!

he Mary Cairncross Butter y Walk project has now been completed and opened. This project has delivered signi cant improvements to the popular rainforest walk, including renewal of the existing track surface, new boardwalk sections, landscaping enhancements and the installation of park furniture. The upgraded walk guides visitors through the rainforest while reducing wear on sensitive environmental areas. This will help protect the surrounding rainforest environment for future generations to enjoy.

The Australians charged from Russell's Top through the Nek at approximately 4:30 am on 7 August 1915 The Nek was at the northern end of the Anzac front. This narrow bridge of land stretched between 2 hills – Russell's Top and Baby 700. The attack began after a period of long-range shelling by shorebased artillery and naval guns. The assault was a disaster for the Allies in the Gallipoli Campaign. The dismounted cavalrymen launched themselves against well-prepared Turkish defences. The result was a victory for the Ottoman Empire. In 15 minutes, the Anzacs suffered 372 casualties. the Charge of the Nek was part of the August Offensive. The goal was to capture higher ground and extend the Anzac front. This was to be the rst phase of a broader strategy to push the Turkish forces back across the peninsula. Not long after the August Offensive, the British agreed to withdraw all forces from Gallipoli. The withdrawal began in December 1915 with a successful evacuation of troops from Anzac Cove and Suvla Bay. 326 men are buried at the Nek Cemetery, though few are identi ed.. First home buyers beware! Australia’s national home prices have recorded their biggest monthly drop since 2022, and this could mean disaster for rst-home buyers who purchased in the past 12 to 24 months. This fall has been widespread throughout Australia, including regional areas. The Australian Federal Government's policy of guaranteeing a deposit for eligible rst home buyers is often promoted as a way to help young Australians achieve the dream of home ownership. While the intention is understandable, critics argue that the policy is based on a number of fundamental economic fallacies. By guaranteeing that the deposit does not create additional housing. Rather than making housing more affordable, government-backed deposit guarantees can simply increase demand for a limited number of homes, pushing prices even higher. In the end, taxpayers may end up subsidising price in ation rather than improving affordability. The deposit guarantee may also encourage some buyers to enter the housing market before they are nancially prepared. Purchasing a home with minimal equity leaves owners more vulnerable if property prices fall, which they are now trending. Negative equity, when the mortgage exceeds the home's value, can become a serious nancial burden, particularly for young families. Eventually, they will most likely be forced to walk away from the house, losing any investment they made in the home and still leaving them with an outstanding mortgage. Another concern is that, to some extent, the nancial risk may be transferred to the taxpayer. If a buyer with only a small deposit encounters nancial hardship and defaults on their mortgage, the government's guarantee may expose public funds to losses. When the federal government implemented the guaranteed deposit for rst home buyers, a number of nancial advisors warned of potential consequences, but the government continued with the policy. One would have thought that a more sensible policy would have been to implement policies that encouraged greater housing construction, faster planning approvals, improved infrastructure, and increased land availability to reduce prices over the long term. Without signi cant increases in housing supply, policies such as guaranteed deposits for people unlikely to be able to afford to service them simply risk making homes more expensive, increasing taxpayer exposure, and leaving many aspiring homeowners little better off than before. Sustainable housing affordability requires tackling the causes of high prices, not merely making it easier to borrow against them. The era whereby Australian homes are among the most expensive in the world may nally be coming to an end. The unstable interest rate and recent government tax changes will also continue to affect rst-home buyers. Some economists are expecting a 7 per cent price easing in the next year. This. could spell disaster for many rst-home buyers!

“Stevie Just Wanted to Go Home”

tevie lay quietly in the dog hospital, his long tan body resting on a soft blanket. Usually, Stevie was a busy little dachshund who liked to know exactly what was happening around him. At home, he was the undisputed King of the house. Every chahir belonged to him, every sunny patch of carpet was reserved for him, and every person in the family was expected to attend to his needs. But today, Stevie did not feel like a king. He had undergone a serious operation on his back, and now even the smallest

movement was dif cult. His eyes, usually bright and full of mischief, looked tired and sad. On his left front leg was a bright yellow bandage decorated with little black dog paws. A pink cannula disappeared beneath the bandage, delivering the medicine and uids that would help him recover. Stevie did not understand the hospital's machines, strange smells, or unfamiliar sounds. He only knew one thing. He wanted to go home. Then, one afternoon, there was an unusual commotion outside his hospital room. “Absolutely not!” said a startled voice. “You cannot bring a threemetre-long carpet snake into a dog hospital!” Stevie’s ears lifted slightly. He knew that sort of commotion. A moment later, Cyril appeared in the doorway. Cyril was Stevie’s best friend, a three-meter-long carpet snake who had apparently decided that hospital rules were merely

Stevie wanted to get up. He wanted to greet Cyril properly and tell him all about the terrible food, the strange machines, and the nurses who kept taking his temperature in a most undigni ed manner. But his body would not cooperate.

“Yer! I suppose said Stevie.” To which Cyril replied, “I wouldn’t mind slithering around her neck myself!” Stevie laughed. Cyril stayed for as long as he was allowed. Before leaving, he made Stevie a silent promise. When Stevie nally came home, Cyril would spend as much time with him as possible. He would lie nearby while Stevie slept, keep him company during the long days of recovery, and make sure his best mate never felt alone. And Stevie’s human family would undoubtedly spoil him terribly. There would be soft blankets, special treats, gentle cuddles, and constant attention. Stevie would probably discover that being a recovering King had certain advantages.

So he simply rested his head and looked at his friend. “I want to go home,” Stevie’s sad brown eyes seemed to say. Cyril understood.

But for now, in the quiet hospital room, Stevie closed his tired eyes.

Home was where Stevie was King. Home was his favourite bed, his familiar smells, and the sound of his human family nearby. Home was where he

Cyril was beside him. Home was waiting. And somehow, that made the long road ahead feel just a little less lonely.

Selling or buying a property!

Using a Trust to hold shares in a company With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny If you’re considering a Trust to organise the ownership of your company this series of posts discusses some issues to consider. Following on from the previous post where we looked at the Trust, duciary relationships, Bene ciaries and Trustees, now we delve a little deeper. Discretionary trusts Discretionary Trusts arise when the Trustee can choose which Bene ciaries receive the Trust property, and how much of the Trust property each Bene ciary gets. The discretion part lies with the Trustee having the option of splitting up the Trust property however they like. Unit trusts Unit Trusts in comparison are xed, express Trusts unlike discretionary Trusts. Unit Trusts allocate the shares in the Trust property for Bene ciaries in the Trust agreement, rather than at the discretion of the Trustee. Each Bene ciary is allocated a unit in the trust property as stated in the Trust agreement.

Company ownership Ownership of a company is allocated through shares. Shares account for a small percentage of a companies’ ownership. So, if

you start a company with a friend and you decide to divide ownership equally, you might decide to start your company by having 1000 shares available to be owned. You and your friend would each receive 500 shares, which you could sell. However, you can arrange it so that a Trustee owns the shares in the company.

I read an article in a newspaper, then I heard it in a news broadcast that a New York school district is introducing a humanoid robot named "Sally" into the classroom to help teach coding, robotics, and artificial intelligence. So, I went exploring both online and via the USA radio station where I had heard the message. Both sources appeared to verify the information. The trials are at the Salamanca City Central School District in Western New York. Teachers could spend far less time preparing lessons, marking assignments and completing paperwork. Instead, they could focus on mentoring students, providing emotional support and developing critical thinking skills. Schools suffering teacher shortages, particularly in rural and remote Australia, could also bene t enormously. AI instructors could deliver specialist subjects such as physics, advanced mathematics or foreign languages to schools that currently cannot recruit quali ed teachers. Another advantage is consistency. AI never becomes tired, distracted or forgetful. Every lesson could be delivered accurately using the latest

curriculum and educational research. However, there are equally important drawbacks. Teaching involves much more than transferring knowledge. Great teachers inspire con dence, recognise emotional problems, encourage teamwork and provide role models. These human qualities cannot easily be replicated by even the most advanced arti cial intelligence. Children also develop important social skills by interacting with adults and classmates. . A classroom dominated by machines may reduce opportunities for empathy, communication, and relationshipbuilding. Privacy is another concern. AI systems collect enormous amounts of data about student performance and behaviour. Parents and governments will need strong safeguards to ensure that sensitive information remains secure. There is also the danger of technology failure. Internet outages, software errors or cyberattacks could interrupt learning. Schools would still require quali ed teachers who could take over immediately. Employment is another signi cant issue. As AI becomes more capable, governments facing

teacher shortages and rising education costs may be tempted to increase student-to-teacher ratios, leaving fewer teachers to supervise larger numbers of AIassisted classrooms. So, when might Australia begin seeing robot teachers? Limited trials are already occurring through AI teaching assistants and remote robotic technologies. More sophisticated humanoid classroom assistants could realistically appear in pilot programs between 2028 and 2032, particularly in specialist STEM subjects and remote schools. Widespread use of AI as a teaching partner could become common during the 2030s, while fully AI-led classrooms remain a much more distant possibility, if they occur at all. The most likely future is not one in which robots completely replace teachers, but rather one in which teachers work alongside increasingly intelligent AI systems. Education has always relied upon human relationships as much as knowledge. While arti cial intelligence may become an indispensable classroom tool, the guidance, encouragement, and emotional support provided by skilled teachers are likely to remain central to effective education for many years to come.

Fromelles was the first major battle fought by Australian troops on Europe’s Western Front. It was a bloody initiation for Australian soldiers to warfare on this Front. The Australian troops were led by British commanders. The battle took place near the French village of Fromelles. The Allies planned the attack as a diversion from the Somme offensive. The intended diversion was unsuccessful, and the battle is seen as the worst military disaster in Australian history and a human tragedy. This battle failed due to flawed planning, poor intelligence, and outdated tactics, and it remains the single bloodiest 24 hours in Australian military history.

n the 19th July 1916, one of the darkest chapters in Australian military history unfolded on the Western Front in northern France. During the Battle of Fromelles, the Australian 53rd Battalion suffered catastrophic losses in what became one of the worst disasters ever experienced by an Australian infantry unit. Within a matter of hours, the battalion was virtually destroyed, earning the

tragic distinction of being one of the most heavily mauled units in the history of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF).

The men had little experience of trench warfare in France and had not yet fought a major battle against the wellentrenched German Army. Despite concerns expressed by several of cers regarding the suitability of the attack, orders were issued to proceed. As darkness fell on 19 July, thousands of Australian soldiers climbed from their trenches and advanced across open ground. Many who attempted to return to the Australian trenches were killed before reaching safety. The losses suffered by the 53rd Battalion were staggering. Of approximately 1,000 of cers and men who entered the battle, around 65 were killed, nearly 250 were wounded, and more than 260 were taken prisoner or reported missing. In total, over half the battalion became casualties in less than twenty-four hours. Several companies were effectively wiped out, and many platoons ceased to exist as ghting formations. The overall Australian losses at Fromelles were equally shocking. More than 5,500 Australians became casualties in a single night, making it the bloodiest twenty-four hours in Australia's military history. The battle failed to achieve any of its intended objectives and failed to draw signi cant German forces away from the Somme.

Despite its losses, it continued to man the front in the Fromelles sector for a further two months. Each year, Australians pause to remember the men who fought and died at Fromelles. Among them, the soldiers of the 53rd Battalion occupy a special place in the nation's military history. Their sacri ce helped shape Australia's understanding of the true human cost of war and ensured that the events of 19 July 1916 would never be forgotten. During WW11, the 53rd Battalion joined the 55th Battalion to ght the Japanese along the Kokoda Track in New Guinea. Today, the 53rd Battalion operates within the Australian Army as an administrative and training structure within the Australian Army Cadet Unit structure. Some interesting facts about the history of the Witta area The rural area of Witta, about seven km north-west of Maleny in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, used to be called Teutoburg. On the 17th October 1887 some fourteen Germans selected land at Teutoburg. The German name of the settlement has been spelled in two ways. Queensland’s Post Of ce Directory pre-World-War-I spells the name ‘Teutoburg’, after the Teutoburg Forest in Germany. It was also spelled this way on a map published in 1913 by the Brisbane Survey Of ce of the Department of Public Lands, and in a book about the history of Queensland published in 1919. However, the name was occasionally spelled ‘Teutoberg’. Because of the anti-German atmosphere during World War I, and after an emotional public meeting held in Teutoburg early in 1916, a name change was discussed, and in May 1916 the Queensland Government Gazette announced the change to Witta, without giving a reason for the change. The German names of some roads at Teutoburg did not change. The rst small Lutheran church was erected on Witta Road in 1893. The 1893 building was pulled down to make way for a new timber structure. The present Lutheran church was completed in 1911.

Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.

What to do if you need assistance

You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer. Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies. An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, ood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search. Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way. Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..

Maleny Visitor Information Centre The Maleny Visitor Information Centre is a not for pro t, long-standing, independent community service, run by volunteers. The Centre is a ticket selling agency for Maleny Film Society movie screenings along with a range of quality souvenirs and postcards, with a distinctively Maleny avour along with information about places and events around the area.
