Is Easter just another long weekend?
As Easter is now upon us, maybe it is a good time to think about the future of Christianity. With so much disarray in the world and the breakdown of world peace, is religion still as strong as it once was?
Christianity remains one of the world’s largest religions, with about 2.3–2.4 billion followers globally, and its overall numbers are still growing—largely due to population growth in parts of the world.
Global growth trends show that Christianity is growing most strongly in Africa, parts of Asia, and Latin America. These regions have higher birth rates and expanding church movements, particularly Pentecostal and evangelical churches. In contrast, many Western countries such as Australia, the United Kingdom, and parts of Europe have experienced long-term declines in traditional church attendance, although this decline has recently stabilised in some places.
Regular weekly church attendance has generally declined in Western nations. For example, in the United States, weekly attendance has dropped to around 30% of adults in recent years. However, special Christian days such as Easter still attract large crowds.
Around 90% of pastors report Easter as one of their highestattended services, often with attendance 50–60% higher than a normal week. In Australia, only about 17% attend Easter services, but many more say they would attend if invited, indicating latent interest.
There are also signs of recent increases in Easter attendance and baptisms in some churches, with reports of full congregations and growing participation.
The most notable change is among younger people, particularly:
• Generation Z and Millennials
• Young adults aged roughly 18–40
Recent reports show a rise in conversions and church engagement among young adults, with some countries reporting strong increases in baptisms at Easter.
Research also indicates that younger generations—especially young men—are increasingly interested in Christianity, reversing earlier declines.
Christianity is growing globally in absolute numbers, especially in developing regions. While traditional church attendance has declined in the West, it remains strong on major occasions like Easter, and there are emerging signs of renewed interest among younger age groups.

Sunshine Coast Council hits headwinds!
Sunshine Coast Council 2026 budget tight!!!
The Sunshine Coast Council 23026 budget is facing a very “difficult budget round” with rising debts and rising costs. Inflation and fuel costs were causing rising costs within the council and also for their contractors.
The council is already working with a deficit, and debt stands at about $66 million, this before the full impact of rising fuel costs is taken into account.
A council spokesperson said: “The budget is tight, and the council is working as hard as they can to deliver an efficient, effective, and sustainable budget.”
A significant accounting error in depreciation reporting, estimated at approximately $30 million, was discovered in mid-2025. This error, affecting five years of financial statements, created a "hole" in the budget that was not previously accounted for.
For the upcoming 2026–27 budget, the council is moving toward a "priority-based budgeting" approach, where every spending proposal must be justified from scratch to ensure long-term financial stability.
Maple Street, Maleny Street scape Councillor, Winston Johnston OAM, said the Maple Street, Maleny Streetscape project could begin after Easter. He acknowledged the community’s growing frustration after multiple false starts over the past two years.
Tenders are presently undergoing “probity assessment” with questions remaining over timing, costs, and community consultation.
Speed limits on Mt View Road, Maleny to change
In the interest of improved road safety, the Sunshine Coast Council has approved that the speed limit on Mt View Road, Maleny, between Maleny Stanley River Road and LandsboroughMaleny Road be reduced to 60kph for the entire length. New signage will be installed along that road to indicate the changes.
Subject to weather conditions, this should be completed within three months.

Australia on the cusp of running out of fuel, or is it?
Recently in Question Time, the Energy Minister insisted there was no fuel problem and told Australians there was no need to panic. Then the Government suddenly announced it would release nearly 20% of Australia’s fuel stockpile after cutting minimum reserve requirements for petrol and diesel. However, on the Sunshine Coast, we saw the reality. Local fuel stations were already putting up signs warning of shortages, with some pumps simply turned off because there’s no fuel available. Our local businesses, tradies, fishermen, and transport operators run on diesel. When supply dries up, the consequences are immediate.
Australians deserve straight answers about what is really happening with our fuel supply and what the Government is doing to protect it.

On this day in history April 3rd
On the 3rd of April 1954, Vladimir and Evdokia Petrov, Soviet spies who were masquerading as diplomats in Canberra, defected to Australia.
The defection and the information that the Petrovs passed onto Australian authorities had global implications, through the identification of spy networks around the world. It affected the balance of political power in Australia for decades after the event.
Vladimir was a lieutenant colonel and Evdokia a captain with the KGB (the Soviet secret service). Vladimir was responsible for decoding instructions from Moscow and for setting up a network of Soviet spies within Australia. Evdokia performed code and cypher work.
The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) was aware of the Petrovs’ activities and assigned the Polish émigré Dr Michael Bialoguski to befriend Vladimir and convince him to defect to Australia.
On 3 April 1954, Petrov defected and was immediately taken to a safe house on Sydney’s North Shore. Nine days later, Prime Minister Robert Menzies announced the defection, which led to the split of the Australian Labor Party and the formation of the Democratic Labor Party in 1955.

How has Net Zero damaged Australia’s Economy
Australia is presently experiencing what it is like in a real world as the Iranian skirmish adds pressures to all world economies.
Australia’s pursuit of net zero emissions, while environmentally motivated, is imposing measurable strain on key sectors of the economy —particularly energy, manufacturing, and regional industries. The transition has accelerated policy decisions that prioritise emissions reduction over cost stability and reliability, creating unintended economic consequences.
One of the most immediate impacts is rising energy costs. The shift away from coal-fired power toward renewables such as wind and solar has introduced intermittency into the grid. Because these sources depend on weather conditions, significant investment in backup generation, storage, and transmission infrastructure is required. These additional costs are ultimately passed on to consumers and businesses, resulting in higher electricity prices. For energy-intensive industries— such as aluminium smelting, steel production, and food processing—this erodes international competitiveness and, in some cases, forces production offshore.
The uncertainty surrounding energy policy has also dampened investment. Businesses are hesitant to commit capital in an environment where regulations, subsidies, and market mechanisms are in constant flux. This policy volatility increases sovereign risk and discourages long-term industrial development in Australia.
Regional economies are disproportionately affected. Many communities rely on coal mining, gas extraction, and associated supply chains for employment and economic activity. Rapid decarbonisation policies threaten these jobs without always providing viable alternative industries, leading to economic dislocation and reduced local spending.
Additionally, the cost of compliance with emissions targets—through carbon reporting, offsets, and technological upgrades—places a growing administrative and financial burden on small and medium-sized enterprises. These businesses often lack the scale to absorb such costs efficiently.

Truthful tells that when he went back to Ireland for a holiday he went to the local pub with his mate Mick.
A Texan walks into a pub in Ireland and clears his voice to the crowd of drinkers. He says, "I hear you Irish are a bunch of hard drinkers. I'll give $500 American dollars to anybody in here who can drink 10 pints of Guinness back-to-back."
The room is quiet and no one takes up the Texan's offer. One man even leaves. Thirty minutes later the same gentleman who left shows back up and taps the Texan on the shoulder. "Is your bet still good?", asks the Irishman.
The Texan says yes and asks the bartender to line up 10 pints of Guinness. Immediately the Irishman tears into all 10 of the pint glasses drinking them all back-to-back. The other pub patrons cheer as the Texan sits in amazement.

Stevie & Cyril take their Easter Church duties very seriously
Stevie the tan dachshund took his responsibilities at the Easter service very seriously. Not everyone in the parish understood this, particularly Mrs. Hargreaves, who had once described him as “that long sausage with opinions.” But on this particular Sunday morning, Stevie stood tall—well, as tall as a dachshund reasonably can—wearing a crisp little white vestment that had been carefully altered to accommodate his… elongated situation.
Beside him lay his best friend Cyril, a three-metre carpet snake with a calm disposition and a surprisingly respectful attitude toward church protocol. Cyril had coiled himself neatly along the aisle, forming what he considered an efficient “collection loop.”
“Remember,” Stevie whispered, adjusting the wicker basket with his paw, “gentle eye contact. Encouraging, not intimidating.”
“I always look gentle,” Cyril replied, flicking his tongue thoughtfully. “It’s the scales that unsettle people.”
The organ music swelled. The congregation stood, sat, knelt, and stood again in a choreography that Stevie had studied closely for weeks. This was their moment—the collection. Stevie trotted down the aisle, basket held proudly in his mouth.
Cyril glided alongside, carrying a polished wooden bowl balanced carefully just behind his head. It was an impressive feat of reptilian engineering.
The first few parishioners were hesitant.
“Oh my,” whispered Mrs. Hargreaves, clutching her handbag like it contained state secrets. “Is that snake… participating?”
Cyril paused beside her and gave what he believed was a reassuring nod. Unfortunately, this involved a slow, deliberate head movement that made Mrs. Hargreaves drop a five-dollar note instantly into his bowl.
“Effective,” Cyril murmured.
Meanwhile, Stevie worked the other side of the aisle with professional charm. He tilted the basket slightly, gave a soft, earnest gaze, and
received coins, notes, and even a small chocolate egg from a delighted child.
“Thank you kindly,” Stevie said, muffled slightly by the wicker.
Halfway down the church, a minor complication arose. Cyril’s tail, which he had carefully coiled, began to slowly uncoil and drift across the aisle, forming an unexpected trip hazard.
A gentleman in the third row found himself gently but firmly redirected by Cyril’s tail and, somewhat confused, placed a ten-dollar note directly onto it.

By the time they reached the altar, the collection had exceeded expectations. The priest, trying very hard to maintain composure, cleared his throat.
“Ah… thank you, Stevie… and Cyril… for your… dedicated service.”
Stevie beamed.
Cyril gave a modest coil.
As the congregation filed out, Mrs. Hargreaves approached cautiously.
“I must say,” she admitted, “that was… surprisingly effective.”

Difference Between Joint Tenants and Tenants in Common
About to buy a property, but not sure how to allocate ownership? It’s important to understand how you’re going to own your property. If you’re buying a property with another person, you can own it as joint tenants or tenants in common and this is usually dependant on the relationship between the parties and how you want to own your property.
Joint Tenancy
In a joint tenancy the parties to an agreement for the purchase of property individually hold an undivided equal share of the property. Where both parties purchase the property together, there is no specified percentage as to who owns what. A joint tenant does not have the right to transfer or sell their interest in the property. In order to remove their interest, they must apply to have the joint tenancy severed which will transfer that interest to the other joint tenant.
Furthermore, it should be noted that there can be more than two joint tenants to the agreement although it is most common to see joint tenancy in the form of a marriage like partnership.
Tenants in common
When purchasing as tenants in common it provides each individual to the transaction with a certain percentage of ownership. This can be equal, but also be in other percentages. Each party that owns a share of the property has the right to sell or transfer their interest in the property to a third party. This normally occurs when the purchasers are not associated with each other.
A common example would be where two or more friends decide to go into an agreement to purchase a property. In this case, each person will be able to own a different percentage based on how much they pay
Joint tenants and tenants in common and survivorship
The primary difference is in survivorship depending on which approach is chosen, different parties will get the interest of a party that dies.
Under a joint tenancy, because the ownership structure cannot be split and there are restrictions to transfer the interest, the death of one party will leave their interest with the other existing party or parties

Do you know about the Australian Holey Dollar
During a conversation with a local last week he used the phrase “he would do anything to get hold of the Australian honey dollar”. That was not the first time that I had that saying, but I did not know the saying nor the meaning behind it.
This led me to want to find out if there was in fact an Australian Holey Dollar or was it just saying. The Australian Holey Dollar was in fact the colony of New Wales first official currency and it was introduced by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1813.
the major tasks for Governor Lachlan Macquarie was to establish a reliable supply of coins for the colony’s first currency. Initially, trade from the establishment of the colony in 1788 until the early 1800s was often conducted using barter, rum, or a mix of foreign coins.
He arranged for around 40,000 Spanish silver coins to be imported into Sydney. To prevent them from being exported again, each coin was altered with a hole through the centre of each coin, creating two separate pieces. The outer ring became the holey dollar, valued at five shillings, and the inner piece became the dump, valued at one shilling and threepence.
Both pieces were overstamped with “New South Wales” and the year “1813,” making them the first official currency produced in Australia. The Holey Dollars began to be recalled from 1822 and were replaced by British sterling coinage, with the last being demonetised in 1829. By 1830, most of the 40,000 coins in circulation had been exchanged for legal tender and melted down into bullion.
When did it occur?
The creation of the holey dollar took place in 1813 during the early years of British settlement in Australia. At the time, the colony of New South Wales was experiencing a severe shortage of official currency, which was hindering trade and economic development.
Where was it produced?
The coins were produced in Sydney, in the colony of New South Wales. The work was carried out locally
under government supervision by a convicted forger, William Henshall, rather than being minted in Britain. This makes the holey dollar the first official currency produced in Australia. Each holey dollar would have been somewhat unique as whatever machinery was employed, it would have been hand-operated.
Why was it necessary?
The primary reason for creating the holey dollar was the lack of a stable currency system in the colony. Coins that did arrive were often quickly exported by traders, as their silver value was higher elsewhere. Governor Lachlan Macquarie introduced the holey dollar to solve this problem by making the coins unusable outside the colony. By altering the coins and overstamping them, their value became tied specifically to New South Wales, discouraging their removal and ensuring a more reliable local money supply.
In summary, the holey dollar represents an ingenious response to economic scarcity. It reflects both the resourcefulness of early colonial administration and the challenges of establishing a functioning economy in a remote settlement.
Today, the holey dollar is considered a national treasure, with only about 300 holey dollars remaining and between 1,100 and 1,200 of the dumps making them incredibly rare collectors' items. In February 2025, an 1813 holey dollar was sold at auction for $525,000now that is a hole dollar.
As each holey dollar is unique, each coin has its own story to tell.

Governments across Australia have been cautious about building LPG-fired electricity generators, despite their potential to support wind and solar, for a combination of policy, economic, and strategic reasons. Building liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)–fired power stations in Queensland could provide several practical benefits in easing pressure on the state’s energy market, particularly during periods of high demand and supply volatility.
Most LPG in Australia (around 80%) is produced as a byproduct of natural gas processing, with the rest coming from oil refining.
LPG generation offers dispatchable power. Unlike wind and solar, which depend on weather conditions, gas-fired stations can be ramped up quickly to meet peak demand. This flexibility is critical in stabilising the grid, especially during heatwaves when electricity usage for air conditioning surges. By filling gaps left by intermittent renewables, LPG plants help
prevent blackouts and reduce price spikes in the wholesale electricity market.
LPG infrastructure can often be developed faster and at lower capital cost compared to largescale coal or nuclear projects. Queensland could leverage existing gas supply chains, storage, and transport systems, allowing new plants to be brought online relatively quickly. This shorter lead time is important in responding to immediate energy shortages and maintaining investor confidence in the energy sector.
Supporting new gas infrastructure can attract criticism from environmental groups and sections of the electorate, making governments hesitant to pursue such projects. Governments tend to make critical decisions based on short-term political expediency.
It is a scientific fact that LPG burns cleaner than coal, producing lower carbon dioxide emissions and significantly fewer particulates and pollutants.
While it is still a fossil fuel, it can serve as a transitional energy source, enabling Queensland to reduce emissions intensity while maintaining reliable base load and peaking capacity. In comparison to natural gas, LPG has a low carbon to hydrogen ratio, which means it produces smaller quantities of carbon dioxide per unit of heat generated when burnt. This balance is important as the state continues integrating renewable energy into its grid.
When many look at the alleged smaller effect that solar and wind has on our environment consideration is generally not given to the behind the scenes that also has damaging effects on the environment, conditions such as those created during the mineral mining and the manufacture. What do we do with all of the defunct wind and solar equipment once it has passed its commercial efficient use?

Additionally, increased LPG generation can enhance energy price stability. By adding firm supply capacity, it reduces reliance on expensive spot market electricity during shortages. This can flow through to lower power costs for households and, importantly, for energy-intensive industries such as manufacturing, which are particularly sensitive to price volatility.
Investing in LPG-fired power stations strengthens energy security. Queensland would be less exposed to disruptions in coal supply or renewable underperformance, ensuring a more resilient and diversified energy mix.
LPG-fired power stations provide flexibility, reliability, faster deployment, and improved market stability—making them a practical option for relieving pressure on Queensland’s energy system in the near to medium
term, especially during periods of extreme or under use.
One thing is certain and that is that the need for electricity in Australia is only going to grow in ever increasing amounts to provide for electric vehicles and more use of modern home appliances and computer AI programs. Whilst figures show that the use of LPG is presently in decline it should be noted that that decline mostly has come about by the decline in LPG powered motor vehicles. This is also assisted by the increasing use of renewable LPG which is more environmentally friendly.
All of this extra use cannot be provided by solar and wind generation by themselves.
All the relative facts should be examined in the face of a disinformation war that is being waged on democracies via traditional media influence.
The political fight against the disinformation war would require
political courage and decisive action.
Although LPG burns cleaner than coal, it is still a fossil fuel that produces carbon dioxide. Federal and state governments are working toward net-zero targets, and so investing in new gas-fired generation risks locking in emissions for decades. Policymakers are wary of committing public funds to assets that may become politically or economically untenable as climate policies tighten.
Economic uncertainty is another constraint. Gas prices in Australia have been volatile, influenced by export markets and supply constraints. This volatility makes long-term operating costs difficult to predict, reducing the attractiveness of LPG plants compared with renewables, whose fuel—sun and wind—is free. When international mining companies sign contracts to extract and sell Australian LPG there should be clauses that ensures that adequate quantity percentages of any LPG mined should automatically be retained in Australian hands directed directly to the Australian market at a price whereby Australia has more electricity than meets the commercial needs at a price that makes end users of electricity competitive in their specific fields thus keeping Australian products at reasonable prices.
There is also a risk of “stranded assets.” Energy systems are rapidly transitioning toward renewables, battery storage, and
other emerging technologies such as green hydrogen. Largescale batteries, in particular, are increasingly seen as a preferred solution for balancing intermittent generation.
Governments may prefer to invest in these technologies rather than infrastructure that could be under utilised or obsolete within a few decades.
Political considerations play a role as well. Public sentiment in many parts of Australia strongly favours renewable energy expansion and reduced fossil fuel dependence.
Private sector dynamics influence decisions. Energy markets in Australia are largely privatised, and governments often expect private companies to build and
operate generation assets. If investors are cautious about gas projects due to uncertain returns or policy settings, governments may be reluctant to step in directly.
In summary, reluctance stems from emissions targets, cost uncertainty, technological shifts, political pressures, and market structure—all of which complicate the case for LPG generation despite its reliability benefits.
Just to be clear Australia remains as the largest exporter of LNG in the world.
Why can’t that be used in Australia at a more economical pace to assist Australian businesses and they not be charged at World parity pricing?
Unitywater 2026 grants program open
Unity Water has opened applications for its 2026-2027 Healthy and Thriving Community Grants programme. The impact of this year’s funding is already being felt across the Sunshine Coast inland. This year’s programme is part of the 2026 initiative. Unity team members recently joined Hinterland Bush Links on the ground to help remove invasive weeds and restore vital wildlife corridors. Their work supports the group’s Restore program, a volunteer-led initiative focused on reconnecting fragmented habitats and improving traditions for wildlife.
Unity Water CEO Anna Jackson explained that the grant programme enables community groups to deliver practical projects and enhance liveability and sustainability across the region. They are proud to partner with local organisations that share their vision for a healthier, more connected region. The grant categories were carefully chosen to align with the programme’s purpose of fostering healthy and thriving communities, strengthening community connections, and supporting a sustainable future.
Bush Links manager Natalie Frost emphasised the importance of the support in enabling the group to expand its restoration efforts. The grant will allow them to organise more weed removal days, community planting events, and recommend the optimal habitats for fragmented species, ultimately creating safer pathways for wildlife and supporting local ecosystems. Speak Up Now 2026 Candlelight Ceremony
Every few days in Australia, someone is murdered by their current or former partner, said Ms Val France, spokesperson for Speak Up Now.
The various service clubs of Maleny and the Sunshine Coast Council are supporting Speak Up Now - Stop Domestic Violence to hold a Candlelight Ceremony on Tuesday, May 5th, commencing at 5.15 p.m. in Tesch Park, Maleny.
This is a time to come together and remember all those who have lost their lives through domestic and family violence. It is a peaceful occasion and one which gains increasing community support each year. Speak Up Now is a collaboration of local service and community groups in the Maleny and Hinterland area to raise awareness of all forms of domestic violence, including elder abuse.
Following the ceremony, there will be a peaceful walk back to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, where there will be a BBQ and a performance by The Sweet Chilli Choir.
If that evening has heavy rain, then the ceremony will be held at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre.

Maleny SES looking for volunteers
Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.
You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.
Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.
An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, flood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.
Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.
Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..

The Maleny Visitor Information Centre is a not for profit, long-standing, independent community service, run by volunteers. The Centre is a ticket selling agency for Maleny Film Society movie screenings along with a range of quality souvenirs and postcards, with a distinctively Maleny flavour along with information about places and events around the area.

“How quickly changes in Maleny” Entrance Foyer of Maleny Hospital prior to 1989?
Many Malenyites now would not remember the old hospital which was situated approximately where the Maleny Ambulance Station is not located. It was demolished in 1989. This photo is of the entrance hall of the original Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital, which was located on the eastern side of Bean Street, Maleny.
Work commenced on the construction of the hospital in 1919 and was opened on the 1st of August, 1920. The hospital building was erected by Mr Paul Tesch of Witta, for 1157 pounds, and 300 pounds was spent on hospital furnishings.
It was initially opened as a private hospital with Dr. Anderson as the Medical Officer and Matron Gorringe. The building was funded by public donations as a memorial to those who served or fought in World War One. The first patients were transferred across to the new building on 26th August 1987.
The old Maternity section was originally part of the Beerburrum Soldiers Hospital and incorporated into the Maleny Hospital in either 1922 or 1923.
Two sections of the old hospital were relocated to become residences in the Maleny district.
