Maple Street Maleny streetscape underway
Sunshine Coast Council has appointed local Kuluin-based company, Disc Landscapes, to carry out the Maple Street, Maleny streetscape works. They are scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2026, weather permitting. Construction will be staged to minimise impacts to the Maleny community and begin at the bottom end of Maple Street, near the IGA. Store so that works are completed in the busiest part of Maleny township ahead of the busy Christmas trading period.
Maple Street and local businesses will remain accessible during construction, with works carefully staged to keep the town moving. Local Sunshine Coast councillor, Cr Johnston said while construction is under way, Council encourages everyone to continue visiting Maleny’s beloved cafés, shops and galleries.
More than 200 residents, business owners and visitors contributed through surveys, pop-ups, forums and conversations, helping to shape key priorities around function, comfort and road safety.
Landscaping will play a key role in the upgrade, with additional trees and greenery to increase shade, comfort and sustainability.
The design also includes upgraded street furniture, lighting, way-finding signage and bespoke cultural heritage interpretation elements.

Bald Knob slope stabilisation underway!
A TMR contractor will undertake slope stabilisation and culvert maintenance on a section of Landsborough–Maleny Road, south of Bald Knob Road at Bald Knob.
The works will strengthen the roadside embankment, improving road safety and resilience. Activities include installing reinforced shotcrete to stabilise the slope, placing rock fill, and clearing debris from the adjacent culvert as part of TMR’s routine maintenance program.
Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-June 2026 and is expected to take approximately two weeks, weather and site conditions permitting.
Works will be carried out at night from Sunday to Thursday, between 6:00pm and 5:00am.

Did you know that more than 30,000 Australians served in Afghanistan. Forty-one made the ultimate sacrifice. Before the Afghan Embassy in Canberra closes, I asked Ambassador Wahidullah Waissi what message he had for the Australian veterans who served alongside the Afghan people. His answer is one every Australian should hear. He said; firstly I would say “Thank You. Australians really served together with the thousands of other international troops, based on loyalty.
As Men's Health Week comes to a close, it's a timely reminder to check in with yourself and your mates. It is a terrible indictment that 1 in 2 men will experience a mental health issue at some point in their lives. Too often, men say "it's all good" when it isn’t. It is important that men’s health and wellbeing is acknowledged publicly in an effort to “tear down the stigma that surrounds it.” Keep talking. Keep checking in. Keep looking out for one another.

On this day in history June 19th Garfield, the sardonic comic strip cat, debuts in print.
Garfield is a comic strip created by Jim Davis, featuring the sardonic cat Garfield, Odie the dog, and their socially inept owner Jon Arbuckle. Garfield is named after creator Jim Davis’s grandfather, James Garfield Davis, who was named after former US president James Garfield.
Garfield first appeared in print on 19 June 1978, initially making his debut in 41 US newspapers. He has since gone on to appear in dozens of books, TV cartoons and even his own film. The comic strip was turned into a television cartoon special in 1982 called “Here Comes Garfield”, which was followed by twelve television specials and a television series, Garfield and Friends, which ran from 1988 to 1995.
In Australia, Garfield and Friends began syndication on Network Ten from 1988 to 1995. Garfield is well known for his love of lasagne and eating in general, his sarcasm, and how he torments Odie, the dog, in ways which sometimes backfire. As of 2006, the comic strip is syndicated in roughly 2,570 newspapers and journals and it currently holds the Guinness World Record for being the world’s most widely syndicated comic strip.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions
eBikes and eScooters can be a blessing or a curse
Haste them or love them bikes and escooters are growing in popularity in every part of Australia, including Maleny. Walk down Maple Street at any time of the day and yo are bond to see an e-bike or escooter at some stage.
However, they also present significant dangers, particularly to younger riders who may lack the experience and judgement needed to use them safely.
One of the greatest risks is speed. Many e-bikes and escooters can travel at speeds of 25 kilometres per hour or more. At these speeds, a loss of control or collision can result in serious injuries, including broken bones, head trauma and spinal damage. Younger riders often underestimate these risks and may ride too fast for conditions.
You only have to be in upper Bunya Street after school finishes to see many bike and escooter riders racing down the hill at speed, more than that they are weaving in and out between heavy traffic at speed, including family cars and school bussesno escape in case or error of judgement leading to an accident.
Another concern is the lack of protective equipment. Most of the teenage students ride without helmets or protective clothing. This is also obvious in other public areas. It appears that safety equipment is something not needed. In an accident, this greatly increases the chance of severe injury. Head injuries are especially concerning because they can have lifelong consequences.
Distractions and inexperience also contribute to accidents. Younger riders may use mobile phones while riding, carry passengers, or attempt dangerous manoeuvres. They may not fully understand road rules or know how to react in traffic situations involving cars, pedestrians and other cyclists. Also there is a theory with many riders that road rules do not apply to them. This unfortunately increases the chances of the rider having a quick trip to a hospital emergency ward.
Poor visibility is another hazard. E-scooters and e-bikes are relatively small and can be difficult for motorists to see, particularly at intersections or in low-light conditions. This increases the risk of collisions.
While e-scooters and e-bikes offer many benefits, their safe use requires education, supervision and responsible behaviour. Encouraging helmet use, enforcing road rules and providing rider training can help reduce the risks faced by younger riders.

Truthful says that this nephew is an Airbus 380 pilot for QANTAS. He was recently on his way across the Atlantic flying consistently at 800 km/h at 30,000 feet, when suddenly a Eurofighter with Tempo Mach 2 appears.
The pilot of the fighter jet slows down, flies alongside the Airbus and greets the pilot of the passenger plane by radio: "Airbus flight, boring flight isn’t it? Take care and have a look here!”
He rolls his jet on its back, accelerates, breaks through the sound barrier, rises rapidly to a dizzying height, only to swoop down almost to sea level in a breathtaking dive. He loops back next to the Airbus and asks, "Well, how was that?"
The Airbus pilot answers: "Very impressive, but now have a look here!"
The jet pilot watches the Airbus, but nothing happens. It continues to fly stubbornly straight, with the same speed. After five minutes, the Airbus pilot radioed, "Well, what are you saying now?"
The jet pilot asks confused: "What did you do?" The other laughs and says, "I got up, stretched my legs, went to the back of the flight to the bathroom, got a cup of coffee and a cinnamon cake.
The moral of the story is:
When you are young, speed and adrenaline seems to be great. But as you get older and wiser, comfort and peace are not to be despised either. This is called S.O.S.: Slower, Older, Smarter.

TStevie & Cyril take time to remember their old mate “Buddy”
he late afternoon sun hung low over the little vegetable garden behind Evie’s house. Rows of tomatoes, beans, carrots and lettuce glowed softly in the golden light. Everything in the garden was neat and healthy because Stevie the tan dachshund and his best friend Cyril, a gentle 3-metre carpet snake, had spent the whole morning helping Stevies grandfather tend the plants.
Stevie’s tiny paws were still muddy from digging around the carrot beds. Cyril lay curled beside the watering can, his
Buddy had been Evie’s beautiful brown labrador. He had loved this garden more than anything. Every morning he would run through the rows of vegetables with a tennis ball in his mouth while Evie chased behind him laughing. Buddy used to lie beneath the tomato plants on hot afternoons, thumping his tail whenever Stevie barked or Cyril slithered past. Six-year-old Evie sat on the ground, legs crossed near the pumpkin vines. Her blonde hair fell across her face as she rested her arms on her her knees and held up her head. Her eyes were red from crying.
Near her sat Stevie, looking sadly up at her. Cyril too rested nearby, his head looking towards Evie’s sad face. None of them could stop thinking about Buddy.

But Buddy had grown old. Only a week earlier, he had quietly closed his eyes for the last time while Evie stroked his soft brown ears.
Since then, the house had felt empty. No paws scratching at the back door. No excited barking when Evie came home. No Buddy sleeping beside her bed at night.
Evie looked toward the old corner of the garden where Buddy used to nap in the sunshine. The grass there still looked slightly flattened.
“I miss him so much,” she whispered.
Stevie gave a soft whine and rested his chin on her knee. Even Cyril seemed sorrowful. The big snake slowly curled himself closer to the little girl as if trying to protect her from the sadness.
Cyril seemed to share the same thought. He lifted his head toward the sky, his tongue flicking softly in the evening air.
“He’s not lonely,” Evie’s mum said gently from the garden gate. “Dogs like Buddy never really leave us. They carry our love with them.” Evie wiped her eyes.
At that moment a single golden leaf drifted down from the old tree above and landed softly beside her shoe. The breeze carried the faint smell of summer grass — the exact smell Buddy used to bring inside after playing outdoors.
A cool breeze rustled through the bean plants. Evie looked up at the clouds drifting across the sky. “Do you think Buddy is lonely?” she asked quietly.
Stevie stared upward too. In his mind he imagined Buddy running through enormous green fields somewhere high above the clouds. In Stevie’s thoughts, Buddy now had great white angel wings spread proudly across his back. He was young again, fast again, happy again.
For the first time in days, Evie smiled just a little.
Stevie barked softly as though he knew Buddy could somehow hear them.
Then the dachshund carefully walked over to Buddy’s favourite spot beneath the tomatoes and placed Buddy’s old, weathered tennis ball there. Cyril slithered beside him and curled protectively around the ball. The three friends sat together silently in the fading light.
Above them, the clouds slowly turned pink and gold.
And high beyond those clouds, they imagined Buddy — the faithful brown labrador with angel wings — running happily through heaven, healthy and free, occasionally looking down at the little vegetable garden and the people and friends who would never stop loving him.

easy to maintain and as a natural replenishable product it is easy to rejuvenate timber without sanding when required. Drying time under ideal conditions is approximately 4 – 6 hours.

DDEFAMATION – DEFINED AND DEFENDED?

efamation concerns the public communication of words, gestures, images or acts that are likely to lower the esteem of the person to whom such communication is targeted. The Queensland Defamation Act of 2005 applies to defamatory information published on or after 1 January 2006.
For a message to be defamatory it must be communicated in some way and the Act has defined such methods of communicating as:
• an article, report, advertisement etc. communicated by a newspaper, magazine or other periodical;
• a program, report, advertisement etc. communicated by television, radio, internet or other forms of electronic communication;
• a letter, note or other writing;
• a picture, gesture or verbal utterance; and
• any other material or means by which something may be communicated to a person. The message is deemed to be defamatory if it:
• lowers the concerned person’s reputation;
• leads others to think less of that person;
• makes others shun or avoid that person; and
• cause others to ridicule, hate or despise them.
There are several distinct defences to an action for defamation which are all noted in the Act and some of these are:
• Justification – the truth alone is the defence here;
• Absolute privilege – this defence is available when one can prove that the document was published on an occasion of absolute privilege such as parliamentary matters and publications;
• Public documents – this defence is available if the publication is from a public document and the information was published honestly for the
advancement of education or for informing the public ;
• Quali fi ed privilege – if the recipient of the defamatory matter has an interest in the information contained in the publication such as a scenario where the information was published in the course of giving that information to that person;
• Honest opinion – if the publication expresses an opinion that is honestly held by the author as opposed to a statement of fact and the opinion was based on proper material that is substantially true;
• Triviality – where the aggrieved person is unlikely to suffer any harm.
It is also worth noting that an apology made to an aggrieved person will not constitute an admission of fault or liability.

Maleny’s very own Showgirl, Kael Thompson, has officially joined the Australian Dolphins 2026/27
National Para Flippers Squad, swim team qualifying for the Para Pan Pacs this August!
Kael is a member of the UniSC Spartans squad. This UniSC program is one of the Swimming Australia High-Performance Hubs supported by the Queensland Academy of Sport. Being a member of the National Para Flippers and Futures Squad is important in preparing and accelerating members’ progression towards international podium success.
Kael has already represented Australia internationally, achieving podium finishes across world-level competitions and recently securing gold medals at the Australian Open Championships.

The Bushman’s Bar is practically fitted out with a large capacity for the cold storage of a range of beverages. The Bushman’s Bar is located at the core of the Witta Recreation Club. Maleny Singers and Maleny Performing Arts Orchestra present “patience”
Lovers of light opera and musical comedy always await the Maleny Singers season with anticipation, and this year is set to again provide a feast for the senses,
with a production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Patience”.
Patience will be on at the Maleny Community Centre on 13, 14, 20 and 21 June.

Set in late 19th Century England, the comic opera satirises the Aesthetic Movement, which was a popular fad of the time. The aesthetic movement (Aestheticism) was an art and lifestyle rebellion championing "art for art's sake. The movement centred on the doctrine that art exists for the sake of its beauty alone.
However in Gilbert’s usual style, he takes time out to poke fun at pretty much everything, from military pomposity to romantic love.
Patience opened on April 23, 1881 at the Opera Comique and ran for 578 performances.
The story centres around two love triangles: one involving the Dragoon guards, who find their highborn fiancées besotted with two aesthetic poets; and the other involving the two poets who are competing

for the attention of Patience, the lovely and innocent milkmaid.
How these battles interact with each other provides endless opportunity for Gilbert’s comedic wit.
While the two aesthetic poets (Rod Johnson and Colin Dunn) trail hordes of swooning ladies reciting their own poems, Patience herself (Vanessa Millar) ponders the meaning of life and love.
Meanwhile, the Dragoon guards march around in utter confusion, hoping against hope that their beloveds will return to sanity in time for a happy ending.
Despite the tortuous storyline, there are many genuinely hilarious moments, and as always, Sullivan’s music makes this a joy to listen to.
The US government has recently launched a historic rolling disclosure of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) records . This was d riven by a mandate from the Trump Administration, the Department of War (in coordination with NASA and the FBI) has launched a public portal to release long-classified files, images, and military footage .
In recent years, renewed public interest in unidentified flying objects, now often referred to by the United States Government as “UAPs” or Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena, has grown dramatically after the release of previously classified military footage and government reports. These disclosures, authorised during and after the administration of Donald Trump and continued under subsequent administrations, have reignited worldwide debate about whether intelligent extraterrestrial life may have visited Earth.
The most widely discussed material included United States Navy cockpit videos showing fastmoving aerial objects performing unusual manoeuvres that trained military pilots claimed could not easily be explained. Among the best known were the “Tic Tac,” “Gimbal,” and “GoFast” videos, officially released by the United States Department of Defence in 2020. These recordings showed objects accelerating rapidly, changing direction suddenly, and appearing to move without visible
wings, engines, or exhaust systems.
Although the release of these videos caused major public excitement, it is important to note that the United States Government did not officially state that the objects were alien spacecraft. Instead, officials acknowledged that some incidents remained unexplained after investigation. The Pentagon established investigative bodies such as the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) to examine sightings involving military personnel and sensitive airspace.
One of the most significant lessons learnt from the released material is that governments do not possess clear answers to every unusual aerial event observed by military forces. Investigators concluded that many sightings could eventually be attributed to drones, balloons, sensor errors, atmospheric effects, or classified military technology. However, a smaller percentage of reports remained unresolved because available evidence was incomplete or inconclusive.
Former military personnel and intelligence officers have also contributed to the discussion.
Astronauts aboard the Apollo 11, Apollo 12 and Apollo 17 Moon landing missions in the 1960s and 1970s said that they saw several inexplicable phenomena on various trips to the Moon. None of these sightings have been positively explained and as such remain mysteries.
Some pilots described encounters with objects that appeared to outperform known aircraft technology. Commander David Fravor, a retired US Navy pilot, publicly recounted his 2004 encounter with the so-called “Tic Tac” object near the coast of California. According to Fravor, the object demonstrated acceleration and movement unlike anything he had previously witnessed. Testimony such as this has added credibility to the argument that some sightings deserve serious scientific investigation rather than ridicule. media, no released government document has provided definitive proof that extraterrestrials have visited Earth. There has been no verified evidence of alien bodies, alien technology, or direct communication with beings from another planet. Many rumours about crashed flying saucers and secret underground facilities remain unsupported by publicly available scientific evidence.
Scientists generally approach the subject cautiously. Most astronomers agree that the universe is so vast that it is statistically likely intelligent life exists somewhere beyond Earth.
The Drake Equation, proposed in 1961 by astronomer Frank Drake, attempted to estimate the number of advanced civilisations that might exist within the Milky Way galaxy. Modern discoveries have strengthened this possibility. Thousands of exoplanets, or planets orbiting other stars, have now been identified, and some
are located within “habitable zones” where liquid water could exist.
The discovery of organic molecules in space and evidence suggesting that water may once have existed on planets such as Mars also supports the idea that life could potentially emerge elsewhere under suitable conditions. Many scientists therefore believe microbial life somewhere in the universe is highly probable. The existence of advanced intelligent life, however, remains uncertain.
The question of whether aliens could physically visit Earth presents additional scientific challenges.
The nearest star system, Alpha Centauri, is over four light-years away. Current human spacecraft technology would require tens of thousands of years to reach such distances. Even if an alien civilisation possessed technology vastly superior to ours, interstellar
travel would still involve enormous energy requirements and difficulties related to time, radiation exposure, and navigation.
Some researchers argue that if intelligent extraterrestrials do exist and have mastered advanced propulsion systems beyond current human understanding, then visiting Earth may theoretically be possible.
Concepts such as wormholes, warp drives, or manipulation of spacetime have been discussed in theoretical physics, although none have been demonstrated in practice. Others suggest that advanced civilisations might use robotic probes or artificial intelligence systems rather than biological beings for interstellar exploration.
Another factor often discussed is the age of the universe. The Milky Way galaxy is billions of years older than human

In conclusion, the release of previously restricted United States Government material has confirmed that trained military personnel have observed aerial phenomena that investigators could not immediately explain. The disclosures have encouraged greater openness and reduced the stigma surrounding scientific investigation into unusual sightings. However, no released evidence has conclusively proven that extraterrestrial beings have visited Earth.
The likelihood that intelligent life exists somewhere in the universe is considered reasonably high by many scientists due to the immense scale of the cosmos and the growing number of discovered planets.

Whilst doing some research for this story Stevie the security dog at Maleny Paint Supplies supplied some very interesting information about the presence of aliens and what they might look like.
He said that he and Cyril, his best mate, a 3m long carpet snake were attending their veggie garden anther Maleny home one morning when they were surprised by a strong bright light that nearly blinded them both.
When they got their vision backpack they were surprised to see this strange figure getting out of a round object that had landed in the garden
This strange figure came over to them and started to talk to them but they could not understand at first. The strange looking person then changed his voice and began talking in a manner that Stevie could understand. The alien said he came from Gallifrey and he was a “Time Lord”.

Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.
You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.
Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.
An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, flood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.
Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.
Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..

The Maleny Visitor Information Centre is a not for profit, long-standing, independent community service, run by volunteers. The Centre is a ticket selling agency for Maleny Film Society movie screenings along with a range of quality souvenirs and postcards, with a distinctively Maleny flavour along with information about places and events around the area.
