Blackall Range Care Group turns 40!
Blackall Range Care Group was established in 1986. The group, a not-for-profit organisation offers the full range of in-home, social and respite support services to encourage people to live independently.
This local group serving more than 2,000 clients and employs more than 240 local workers and more than 130 volunteers.
As well as providing a full suite of in-home and respite services, RangeCare can also arrange subsidised mowing and home maintenance programs, home modification services, and allied health care services such as physiotherapy, podiatry, and occupational therapy.
The group celebrated their 40th year birthday on Friday, April 17th, 2026 at their Flaxton Office. They also have an office at 17B Bean Street, Maleny in the Maleny Hospital grounds.

Maleny Senior Citizens terrorise Noosa!
Recently members of the Maleny Senior Citizens club made an unannounced expedition to Hastings Street, Noosa.
The expedition commenced by Mystic Mountains coach to Tewantin where they boarded a ferry boat, Miss Tewantin for the water invasion of Hastings Street.
Photo below shows some of the members eagerly waiting a ferry terminal landing at the rear o Hastings Street. Following coffees and ice creams they safely returned home!

Recently, the Premier announced that our State Government is in discussions with proponents around building a new fuel refinery costing in the vicinity of $11 billion in Queensland. Sites around Gladstone are being investigated.
Never again should we be in the position where we’re at the mercy of a global supply chain. Through this crisis, I’m determined to ensure fuel security once again.
Premier Crisafulli emphasised that this would transform Queensland into an energy powerhouse, using local oil from the Taroom Trough to reduce reliance on foreign markets.
He views the untapped oil reserves in the Taroom Trough as "liquid gold" that should be processed domestically rather than exported, and this project is essential to insulate the state from global supply shocks.

Bunya Street, Maleny – Night Road Works
Bunya Street, Maleny has been scheduled for road reseal works, commencing 19 April 2026 (weather permitting). These works will be undertaken at night to minimise disruption where possible. This research project is part of the Council’s $26 million road reseal program for this financial year.
This work will be carried out by Allens Asphalt Pty. Ltd. Residents and businesses directly impacted will receive a notification letter with further details.
Council crews will be on site and traffic management will be in place to keep traffic flowing as freely and safely as possible. Signage will be installed to inform motorists and residents during the works.
Thank you for your patience and understanding while we carry out these essential road improvements.

On this day in history April 17th
Wednesday, April 17, 1935. Australian airline Qantas operates its first overseas passenger flight.
Qantas was founded in Queensland on 16 November 1920, and operated air mail services subsidised by the Australian government, linking railheads in western Queensland. In 1934, Qantas Empire Airways Limited. QEA commenced services between Brisbane and Singapore using de Havilland DH-86 Commonwealth Airliners. On 17 April 1935, the first overseas passenger flight from Brisbane to Singapore was operated in a journey which took four days.

Why do people have to rubbish our beautiful area?
With ANZAC Day celebrations coming up on April 25th, now its a good time to consider the prosecution of Corporal Ben Roberts Smith for alleged war crimes committed between 2009 and 2012 in Afghanistan.
He was a highly decorated former Australian SAS soldier, charged with five counts of war crime-murder regarding the unlawful killing of unarmed detainees during his postings in Afghanistan.
The prosecution of Ben Roberts-Smith could hurt Australia in several ways, particularly in terms of national morale, military reputation and public trust.
For many Australians, Roberts-Smith was seen as a war hero and a symbol of courage in Afghanistan. Seeing one of the country’s most decorated soldiers face war crimes charges may damage public confidence in the armed forces and weaken some of the pride Australians feel in military service. The case may also affect recruitment and morale within the military. Some serving and former soldiers may feel that splitsecond decisions made in combat are being judged years later by people far removed from the realities of war. There is concern that future soldiers could become hesitant in dangerous situations because they fear legal consequences later.
At the same time, the case has already created deep divisions in Australia. Some people believe pursuing Roberts-Smith is necessary to uphold the law and maintain the integrity of the military. Others believe he has already been publicly condemned before a criminal trial has taken place.
However, there is another side to the argument. Some believe that failing to prosecute serious allegations would do even greater damage to Australia’s reputation by suggesting that soldiers are above the law. Australia’s international standing depends partly on showing that even highly decorated figures are subject to legal scrutiny.
It is important to note that Roberts-Smith denies the allegations, and criminal charges must still be proven beyond reasonable doubt. Previous court findings against him were made in civil proceedings using the lower standard of proof known as the balance of probabilities.

Truthful tells us that he had to go to the coast last week to do some business at a bank. He complained that he nearly had to own the bank to be able to afford the cost of fuel to get there. He said he saw the following.
A old lady hand her bank card to a bank teller and said, “I would like to withdraw $500” . It couldn’t have happened in Maleny as most banks have now closed here.
The teller told her, “For withdrawals less than $2,000, please use the ATM.”
The old lady wanted to know why.
The teller returned her bank card and irritably told her, “These are the rules. Please leave if there is no other matter. There is a line behind you.”
The old lady remained silent for a few seconds, then handed the card back to the teller and said, “Please help me withdraw all the money I have.”
The teller was astonished when she checked the account balance. She nodded her head, leaned down and respectfully told her, “My apologies Ma'am, you have $35 million in your account and our bank doesn't have so much cash currently. Could you make an appointment and come again tomorrow?
The old lady then asked how much she could withdraw immediately.
The teller told her any amount up to $250,000.
"Well, please let me have $250,000 now", she requested. The teller did so quickly, then handed it very friendly and respectfully to her elderly client.
The old lady put $500 in her bag and asked the teller to deposit the balance of $249,500 back into her account.
Moral of the story is “Don't be difficult with old people, they spent a lifetime learning the skills.”

Stevie & Evie from Maleny take an adventurous bike ride around the Maleny countryside
Stevie the tan dachshund had always suspected he was born for great things. Some dogs were meant to dig holes, some to chase sticks, and some to nap on sofas. Stevie, however, was clearly meant to ride a bicycle through the rolling green hills of Maleny.
On a bright Queensland morning, Stevie adjusted his tiny handlebars with a serious expression and gave his little bell a confident ting-ting. Beside him waited his best human friend, a small girl named Evie who lived next door to stevie.
She had pigtails, a bright pink crash helmet, and a pink bicycle
fitted with trainer wheels that rattled happily when she moved. She grinned at Stevie.
“Ready?” she asked.
Stevie gave a short, proud bark that very clearly meant absolutely.
Off they rolled, tyres humming along the narrow country lane that curved through Maleny’s patchwork of paddocks and farms. The air smelled of warm grass, cow manure, and distant eucalyptus trees. Stevie pedalled with determination, his long ears flapping like small tan flags in the breeze.
Their first stop came almost immediately, because Stevie knew that proper adventurers always stop to admire cows. A whole herd stood in a nearby paddock, chewing slowly and staring with mild confusion at the sight of a dog on a bicycle.
Stevie rang his bell.
“Hello, cows,” Evie said politely, waving.
The cows blinked. One of them mooed in a low, thoughtful way, as if considering whether to apply for a bicycle licence.
Stevie barked back, which in dog language roughly translated to, Lovely weather we’re having, isn’t it?
They pedalled on, passing fields where farmers were hard at work. Tractors rumbled like giant beetles, turning soil into neat brown rows ready for planting. One farmer paused, leaned out of his tractor, and tooted the horn. “BEEP!”
Evie waved enthusiastically.
Stevie barked twice and rang his bell again, because good manners are important when acknowledging farm machinery. They rode past rolling hills, wooden fences, and gum trees where kookaburras laughed at nothing in particular. Butterflies drifted lazily across the road, and Stevie tried to steer around them, because he was a gentle dachshund who did not believe in flattening insects.

Every so often they stopped to drink water and admire the view. Stevie pretended he was a famous cyclist touring the countryside, though really he was mostly thinking about whether lunch might involve sausages.
Then something slithered into the road ahead of them. “Snake!” Evie said, her eyes wide.
Stevie skidded to a careful stop, his paws gripping the brakes. A long brown snake was sliding calmly across the warm bitumen, apparently in no hurry at all.
“Well,” Evie whispered, “we can’t run over him.”
Stevie nodded seriously. He parked his bicycle, hopped off, and stood beside her. Together, they
waited while the snake continued its slow, wiggly journey. “Go on, Mr Snake,” Evie encouraged. “You’re doing great. We do not want you to get run over by a car.”
The snake, perhaps motivated by praise or perhaps simply by its own snake business, reached the other side and disappeared into the grass.

The late afternoon light painted the paddocks gold. Stevie’s legs were tired, and Evie’s trainer wheels rattled more slowly now, but neither of them wanted the day to end.
When they finally rolled into the driveway, both were dusty, tired, and very happy.
Stevie leaned his bicycle against the fence and sat down with a long, satisfied sigh.
“That was the best ride ever,” the girl said.
Stevie agreed completely.
“This will not be the last bike ride we go on I hope.” said Evie to Stevie.

The days when Company Directors could plead ignorance of their Company’s affairs are long gone with the courts showing very little sympathy for Director who use ignorance as a defence. No longer can a Director argue that the appointment was a token appointment or one that he or she was pressured into accepting.
Directors are expected to:
• Be proactive and actively participate in the management of the Company. Total nonparticipation is impermissible;
• Understand the role that a Director performs;
• Ensure that the solvency of the Company can be monitored on a continuing basis.
Directors in particular have an obligation to prevent their Company from incurring debts that the Company cannot pay for.
A Director is also expected to be able to judge the fine line between solvency and insolvency and be ready to act to prevent the Company engaging in insolvent trading. However to be able to identify the fine line
between solvent and insolvent trading is not an easy one.
It is the Company’s cash-flow which is of crucial importance and this is where the line between solvent and insolvent trading can be found. A Company is only solvent if it is able to pay all of its debts "as and when they fall due” – not just some of its debts. A Company that has a surplus of assets over liabilities can still be technically insolvent because of the lack of cash flow to cover its debts.
If it is alleged that a Director has contravened the Corporations Act in relation to insolvent trading the Director must be able to prove one of the following as defence:
• when the Company incurred the debt the Director had reasonable grounds to expect that the Company was solvent and would remain solvent even if the debt was incurred; or
• when the Company incurred the debt the Director had reasonable grounds to believe (and actually believed) that a subordinate in the Company was

competent enough to provide the correct information about the Company’s solvency status and that the Director relied upon this information; or
• that when the debt was incurred the Director, because of illness or some other good reason, was unable to take part in the management of the company at that time; or
• that the Director took all reasonable steps to stop the Company from incurring the debt.
It is clear that although Directors may delegate certain responsibilities to other subordinates in the Company, they are still obliged to have an active role in the management of the affairs of the Company. To fail in this obligation to properly discharge the duties of the office of a Director could lead to personal exposure to liability and in many cases significant sums of money.

Service from the bar can be provided to customers on the covered hard standing overlooking the playing pitches, or directly into the Clubroom.

Ben Roberts - Smith arrested and charged as a war criminal
If the arrest and trial of Ben Roberts-Smith is not a political move and a show trial, I don’t know what is!! The timing is impeccable right before ANZAC Day.
From an investigation that took from 2017 until 20326 and cost in the vicinity of $350 million dollars, including a Royal Commission whereby the Brereton report was released in 2020, and then the arrest is made just days before ANZAC Day 2026. He, and his solicitor, on originally being informed that he was to be arrested and charged with other offences, attempted a number of times for Roberts-Smith to hand himself in without any fuss.
No, not enough publicity - he was arrested as he and his family alighted from a commercial aircraft in Sydney. He was placed in handcuffs and escorted to an awaiting police vehicle.
Just as a coincidence, there was a large group of media representatives, including cameramen for all television stations in close proximity, to record the event. How did they know what was about to take place? Just another political event for a camera shot!
Before making a judgement on the original event, just consider what you would have done in that splitsecond decision. The people of Australia placed our diggers in that situation without a second thought!

Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.
You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.
Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.
An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, flood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.
Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.
Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..

The Maleny Visitor Information Centre is a not for profit, long-standing, independent community service, run by volunteers. The Centre is a ticket selling agency for Maleny Film Society movie screenings along with a range of quality souvenirs and postcards, with a distinctively Maleny flavour along with information about places and events around the area.
The Centre is situated at 2/23 Maple Street, Maleny. It is open 7 days a week between 9.30am-4.00pm. Closed only on Good Friday and Christmas Day. If you have lost something on your visit to Maleny check with the centre as often items are handed in there. Phone: 07 5499 9033

quickly changes in Maleny” Maple Street, Maleny - 1950’s?
In the 1950s, Maleny was a tight-knit rural dairy community on the Sunshine Coast hinterland, characterizsd by dirt roads, the iconic Maleny Co-operative Dairy Association, and the bustling, rustic charm of Maple Street. The buildings in this photo are all still there albeit in different disguises. Notice the gravel street, even in the 1950’s.
The town's economy was heavily dependent on dairying, with the local factory playing a central role in the lives of many residents.
This was a time when you could slow down and breathe a little deeper.
