Witta Recreation Club Celebrates 100 years Inclement weather couldn't dampen the 100-year celebration of the Witta Recreation Club's formation on September 12th. A time capsule containing pieces of Witta’s history was sealed for another 50 years, until 2076. The items included historic letters, including the original permission to use the land. Also included were photographs, documents, memorabilia and records tracing the club’s journey over the past 100 years.

September 12th saw celebrations for 100 years of the formation of the Witta Recreation Club at Witta, Queensland. The day started out showery; however, that did not stop the celebrations. With plenty of activities, nobody was disappointed or put off by the weather. The day included plenty of free activities and fun for the children and adults. It also featured a static display of items and photographs of the club from the past century. It also included the sealing of a time capsule that will be opened in 2076. Wonder what locals will think by then?

Police charge man after numerous criminal offences around the Sunshine Coast, including Maleny Police have charged a 28-year-old man after investigations into multiple break-in offences across the Sunshine Coast, including several in the Maleny area. The man was charged with 28 offences, including 15 counts of enter dwelling and commit, eight counts of enter dwelling with intent to break, and ve counts of fraud.
It is alleged the offences were committed between 22 June and 3 September. The man unlawfully gained entry to multiple properties in Paci c Paradise, Twin Waters, Buderim, Beerwah, Mountain Creek, Bli Bli, Mooloolaba, Kuluin, Moffat Beach, Maleny, Maroochydore, Woombye and Yandina from which quantities of gold and jewellery were taken. He appeared in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Monday 7 September, 2026.

Good news and bad news to end a big doublesitting week in Canberra.
The good news: Labor has SCRAPPED its $5,000 allied health cap for veterans. We fought it, veterans fought it, and today the Government nally backed down. It should never have got this far. The bad news: Labor has pushed through its changes to the private health insurance rebate, which could leave some older Australians paying up to $1,600 more a year for their cover. More than 10,000 Australians signed my petition opposing these changes. I tried twice to table their voices in Parliament, and twice Labor blocked me.

We have to clean up their act Illegal dumpers across the Sunshine Coast are facing increased scrutiny after more than 2200 suspected incidents were reported to council in just 12 months, leaving about 770,000 litres of waste dumped in public spaces. Fines for illegal dumping now range from $2,763 to $172,700.. Sunshine Coast Council has secured $270,000 in State Government funding for a dedicated illegal dumping of cer over three years, boosting an existing enforcement team that investigates offenders and deploys surveillance technology across the region. The additional compliance resources will be particularly valuable across the region’s extensive forestry areas. Council removed about 360,000 litres of abandoned waste directly, with the remainder removed following investigations. The new funding comes as council revealed it received 2246 community reports of suspected illegal dumping during 2025–26. Remember that it's not OK to use our community as a dumpsite; illegal dumping is environmental vandalism! Regulated dogs to remain to be checked The Council reports 137 regulated dogs, of which 111 are classi ed as dangerous on the Council’s Regulated Dog Register as of August 19, 2026; each requires an annual inspection. Council of cers recommend approving a new inspection program running from November 14, 2026, to November 13, 2027. Authorised council of cers to inspect properties where regulated dogs are being kept. The Council’s reports estimate it will collect $86,784 in regulated-dog registration fees during the 2026-27 nancial year. This is expected to be a full-cost operation. The report puts the average cost of an inspection at $495, including administration and travel. Dog owners who do not comply with the regulations can be issued with a $2,590 on-the-spot ne, or, for failing to comply with conditions for keeping a regulated dog, the ne is $25,905 Regulated dog owners are required to meet conditions under Queensland's Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008. Inspections would occur on weekdays and during daylight hours. Compliance is an important tool to ensure dangerous dogs no longer pose a risk to other animals or people. In another move, the Sunshine Coast Council has brought in human rights experts ahead of changes being formalised in new animal management laws to ban dogs from selected rocky foreshores, playable surfaces on council-owned sports elds, and playgrounds and barbecue areas. The changes are necessary to safeguard environmental and cultural values at nature reserves and beach sites.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions All aboard for the AI Express!!! Much has been said of late about the dangers of “out of control” AI programs. Already one major data centre for AI is to be built at Dalby at great expense, not only in money terms, but in environmental terms. AI can be kept aligned with its intended purpose, but this requires more than simply trusting the technology or the companies developing it. Human oversight, clear rules and accountability must remain at the centre of AI development and use. One major danger of AI is scams and fraud. Criminals can use AI to produce convincing emails, text messages and phone conversations that imitate banks, government agencies, businesses or even family members. Voice cloning makes it increasingly dif cult to know whether the person on the other end of a telephone is genuine. Australians may be persuaded to transfer money or reveal passwords and other sensitive information. Misinformation is another concern. AI can generate realistic-looking photographs, videos and news stories that never actually happened. During elections, emergencies or major national events, false information can spread rapidly through social media and in uence public understanding. There are also serious privacy concerns. People routinely provide personal information to websites and AI services without fully understanding where that information goes, how long it may be retained or how it might be used. Businesses can also use AI to analyse people's behaviour, purchasing habits and online activities. Employment is another area of uncertainty. AI may automate some routine jobs and change the skills required in others. While new employment opportunities are likely to emerge, some workers could face redundancy or the need for retraining.

We now hold you responsible and want to be reimbursed for the fact that I became pregnant. This would not have happened if you had put us in the room that we booked."
Finally, excessive reliance on AI could weaken people's ability to think critically and make decisions independently. AI should therefore be treated as a powerful tool—not an unquestionable authority. Australians need stronger digital awareness, sensible safeguards and the habit of checking important information before acting on it. And that is all before we consider just how other countries might use AI for military operations. Will the world end within 10 years, as has been recently suggested?

Stevie & Cyril - “A great help in the garden”:
It was a beautiful morning in Maleny when Stevie, a tan dachshund, decided he was going to spend the day helping two workmen prune the tall hedge in the front yard. Stevie had put on his favourite Fiddes beanie, carefully positioned between his oppy ears. His best mate, Cyril, a threemetre-long carpet snake, was also wearing his Fiddes beanie, although keeping it on his head was proving considerably more dif cult.

Mick, carrying a load of hedge clippings, tripped over Cyril’s tail and landed in a ower garden. “Cyril!” shouted Barry from the ladder. “Move your backside!” Cyril looked over his shoulder, appearing genuinely surprised that his backside was in the way. He then decided to help by wrapping himself around the bottom of the ladder.
The two workmen, Barry and Mick, had arrived with a ladder, electric hedge trimmers, wheelbarrows and enough equipment to tackle a small rainforest. “Right,” said Barry, looking at the hedge. “We should have this nished by lunchtime.” Stevie barked enthusiastically. Cyril nodded his long head. Neither workman realised they had just received two offers of assistance. Barry climbed the ladder and began trimming the upper branches. Mick stood below, collecting the cuttings. Stevie decided his rst job was to supervise the operation. He positioned himself directly underneath the ladder, looking upwards. “Get out of the way, you silly dog!” Mick shouted as a large branch fell beside him. Stevie took this as encouragement and began barking at the hedge.
Unfortunately, when Barry tried to climb down, the ladder wouldn't move. “What's holding this thing?” he grumbled. “Your assistant,” said Mick, pulling leaves from his shirt.
Cyril, meanwhile, had discovered a much more interesting use for his body. He

Barry wiped his forehead. “I've never worked with such unhelpful assistants.”
Unfortunately, the branch caught the leg of the wheelbarrow, tipping it over and scattering hedge cuttings across the path.
Stevie sat proudly beside the wheelbarrow, his Fiddes beanie slightly crooked. Cyril coiled himself beside him, his beanie hanging over one eye.
Cyril decided it was time to clean up. He slithered through the pile, gathering
Mick looked at the two friends and shook his head. “Next time,” he said, “we're charging extra for supervision.” Stevie barked. Cyril nodded. And both of them looked extremely pleased with their day's work.

Country Cemeteries are not just places to bury the dead! “Witta Cemetery is no different”!
In 1892, Carl Thiedecke petitioned the government for 5 acres of Crown land for a public burial ground for the Teutoburg area. As a result, the Witta Cemetery was established in March 1894 to serve the early European farming community in the Blackall Range settlement originally known as Teutoburg. A local committee operated the cemetery in trust for the Parish of Maleny. The Trust situation continued until 1944, when the Landsborough Shire Council took responsibility for the seven cemeteries in its area. That subsequently changed to the Caloundra City Council and now to the Sunshine Coast Council.
A
country cemetery is much more than a place where people are laid to rest. The Witta Recreation Club's recent 100-year history day included a walk around the Witta Cemetery, led by Mrs Lynda Burgess, a lifelong local who knew most of the people buried there and is a living record of the history, people, and changing fortunes of the communities they serve. A walk through any old country cemetery can reveal stories about an area that may never appear in of cial history books. The names and dates recorded on headstones provide valuable information about the families who settled in the district. They can show when particular families arrived, how long they remained and how generations were connected. Large family plots often demonstrate the importance of farming families and the contribution they made to developing the local community.
The ages of those buried in a cemetery can also tell an important story. Older graves often reveal the hardships earlier generations faced. Infant and child mortality was once much higher than it is today, while inscriptions referring to accidents, illnesses, or childbirth provide reminders of the dangers of rural life. Cemeteries can also re ect major events in an area's history. War memorials and graves of returned servicemen provide evidence of the community's involvement in con icts such as the First and Second World Wars. Headstones may also identify occupations, including farmers, timber workers, blacksmiths, teachers, shopkeepers, railway employees and local business owners. Together, these records provide a picture of how the district functioned. The cemetery itself can reveal changes in social customs and attitudes. The style of headstones, inscriptions, religious symbols and grave decorations changes over time, re ecting changing fashions, beliefs and cultural in uences. Country cemeteries are therefore valuable historical archives. They preserve the names of ordinary people who helped build Australia's rural communities, many of whom would otherwise be forgotten. The Witta Cemetery is no different. It held the names of many of the original families who populated the newly settled Blackall Range

They remind us that a district's history is not simply about famous events or prominent individuals—it is also about the thousands of ordinary men, women and children whose lives shaped the community.
Local historical research reveals that Mitchell once saved the life of his employer’s young son in Peachester, who suffered from a burst appendix.
One interesting story about a grave in the Witta Cemetery is about an Aboriginal man named Mitchell. He died in 1919. On his grave, the inscription reads: "In loving Memory of “Mitchell” Aboriginal who died 20 September 1919. Much Beloved. Deeply Mourned."
Mitchell reportedly carried the sick child down to Coochin Creek, boarded a logging steamer, and accompanied them all the way to Brisbane, so the boy could receive life-saving medical treatment. It was a rare and respectful tribute for an Indigenous person to be buried in a European-settled regional cemetery during that era. The Landsborough Shire Council funded the headstone for Mitchel. History tales reveals that during the 1960’s a major improvement program was carried out on this cemetery and l the striking wrought-iron gates were sourced from Melbourne's historic Bourke Street Eastern Market and then installed and set into a new masonry entryway. Koalas have been seen in the trees surrounding the cemetery. It is also home to many different types of Australian birdlife. For anyone wanting to understand the history of a country region, a cemetery is often an excellent place to begin.

The Queensland government has begun crushing and destroying con scated illegal e-bikes and e-scooters under Queensland’s e—mobility reforms. Since the rst reforms commenced on 1 July, 2026, Queensland Police have seized 466 illegal e-bikes and e-scooters and issued 2,142 traf c infringement notices as part of a targeted statewide enforcement response. Each notice holds dangerous behaviour to account. Removing these dangerous devices from our streets ensures that people who put the community at risk are being held accountable. If an illegal e-bike is seized, it will be destroyed. "If you're doing the wrong thing, if you're riding an illegal high-powered device or putting others at risk, Queensland Police now have the powers to seize your bike and destroy it.” The batteries and metal from seized devices will be recycled wherever possible, helping ensure the disposal process is environmentally responsible.

Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.
What to do if you need assistance
You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer. Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies. An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, ood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search. Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way. Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..

Maleny Visitor Information Centre The Maleny Visitor Information Centre is a not for pro t, long-standing, independent community service, run by volunteers. The Centre is a ticket selling agency for Maleny Film Society movie screenings along with a range of quality souvenirs and postcards, with a distinctively Maleny avour along with information about places and events around the area.
The Centre is situated at 2/23 Maple Street, Maleny. It is open 7 days a week between 9.30am-4.00pm. Closed only on Good Friday and Christmas Day. If you have lost something on your visit to Maleny check with the centre as often items are handed in there. Phone: 07 5499 9033

The vision of the club is to provide country club services to be enjoyed by the local community and visitors to the area. The excellent facilities of the Witta Recreation Club are available for hire for events such as weddings, sports days, family gatherings. The club has a Certi ed Kitchen/Catering facilities including a stove, pots & pans, dishwasher, crockery and utensils. The Bushman’s Bar is practically tted out with a large capacity for the cold storage of a range of beverages. The Bushman’s Bar is located at the core of the Witta Recreation Club. “Teak Street, Maleny - 1958” Maleny was rst settled for its timber supply. Teak Street, Maleny, was historically known as Walker's Hill. From 1950 to 1958, families such as the Friskes and Siddans lived on the street. At the time, Maleny's streets were generally gravel, with no kerbs or gutters. Many streets remained this way until well into the 1970s. The photo below shows several buildings still in use today. While Maleny has changed a lot, much of it still looks like it did 80 years ago. The 1960s marked a major transition period; after decades of driving the local economy, the historic co-op butter factory nally closed its doors in the 1960s as milk and supply chain dynamics shifted, signalling the end of an era for local pioneering dairy families.
