After 80 years a soldier is recognised with the presentation
of Dutch medals of honour
MORE than 80 years after surviving brutal Japanese prisoner-ofwar camps and the devastation of Nagasaki, former Dutch soldier Alois (Wies) Felix Ferdinand Amrein was formally honoured, with two posthumous medals recognising his wartime courage, sacrifice, and survival.
Alfred Amrein, aged 90, now of Beerwah and formerly of Witta, and Alois’ daughter Meike Amrein, who travelled from the Netherlands especially for the occasion, accepted the medals on behalf of the late soldier.
The medals were presented by the Dutch Defence Attaché to Australia and New Zealand, Colonel Gerbe Verhaaf, who travelled from Canberra for the ceremony attended by family, friends, and community members.
The medals recognised a remarkable story of endurance, spanning World War II imprisonment, forced labour, and survival near Nagasaki during the atomic bombing in August 1945.
Colonel Verhaaf described the awards as a long-overdue acknowledgement from the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
“These medals are a formal recognition... that Alois Felix Ferdinand Amrein’s courage, service, and suffering during the Second World War will never be forgotten,” he said.

Sunshine Coast Council 2026 budget tight!!!
Sunshine Coast Council has adopted Budget 2026-27 at a Special Meeting on June 1st
The State Government’s recent land revaluation saw an average increase of 24 per cent across the Sunshine Coast region and the Sunshine Coast Council has worked hard to mitigate the impacts.
The final figure will be an overall rates increase of $4.26 a week for most owner-occupier ratepayers, which is up $221.68 (9.7%) on 2025-26.
General rates are due in January and July each year.

Maple Street, Maleny Street scape
The Maple Street Streetscape project ia about to commence. This project is being jointly funded by Sunshine Coast Council and the Queensland Government and is expected to be delivered by the end of 2026, weather permitting.
The plan will ensure that Maple Street with smoother and wider footpath sections, raised pedestrian crossings, improved lighting and landscaping including over 1500 new plants, trees and shrubs, along with seating and community gathering spaces.

On this day in Queensland’s history June 5th
On the 5th June, Queensland’s history is defined by its deep tie-in to Queensland Day and environmental milestones, as well as significant transport and exploration moments.
The date immediately precedes Queensland Day (June 6). On June 6th, 1859, Queen Victoria signed the Letters Patent granting the territory independence from New South Wales. June 5th often marks the commencement of statewide festivities celebrating local culture and heritage.

Also on June 5th, 1823 the explorer Allan Cunningham successfully navigated a path through the Liverpool Range (now known as Pandora's Pass) on his quest to find an inland route from the coast to the Liverpool Plains.
Alan Cunningham was an English botanist and explorer, primarily known for his expeditions into uncolonised areas of eastern Australia to collect plants and report on the suitability of the land for grazing purposes.
This route was soon superseded however by more accessible passes found to the east.
On his next expedition he explored Moreton Bay and up the Brisbane River.

June 6th . - 82nd Anniversary of the D Day invasion
June 6th, this Saturday is the 82nd anniversary of the Normandy Landing, also known as the D.Day invasion. This is when Allied forces launched the largest seaborne amphibious invasion in history across a 50-mile stretch of the Normandy coast in France. The massive air, land, and sea assault marked the beginning of the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi control.
Even today the D-Day invasion of 6 June 1944 remains one of the most significant military operations in modern history.
Viewed from 2026, eighty-two years after the event, its importance extends far beyond the beaches of Normandy and the immediate military objectives of the Second World War.
The D-Day invasion was known as Operation Overlord. More than 156,000 Allied troops from the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia and other nations landed on five beaches along the French coast.
Despite fierce German resistance and heavy casualties, the Allies successfully established a foothold in France. This achievement opened the way for the eventual defeat of Nazi Germany less than a year later.
From the perspective of 2026, D-Day is remembered not only as a military triumph but also as a symbol of international cooperation in defence of freedom and democracy. The operation required extraordinary planning, logistics, and coordination among Allied nations. It demonstrated what democratic countries could accomplish when united against tyranny and aggression.
The invasion also serves as a reminder of the immense sacrifices made by the wartime generation. Thousands of young soldiers lost their lives on D-Day alone, while many more were wounded. Their courage helped secure the freedoms enjoyed by subsequent generations.
In an era when geopolitical tensions and challenges to democratic values continue to exist, the lessons of D-Day remain relevant. The invasion stands as a powerful example of determination, unity, and sacrifice in the face of oppression. Its legacy continues to inspire people around the world and remains a defining moment in twentieth-century history.
Today, Australia commemorates the courage and sacrifice of those Australians who took part in the D-Day invsion, recognising their contribution to one of the most significant military operations in history.

that he was flying from Brisbane to Perth to visit his son and daughter-in-law.
Unexpectedly, the plane was diverted to Adelaide along the way because of bad weather. The flight attendant explained that there would be a delay, and if the passengers wanted to get off the aircraft and stretch their legs. The plane would re-board in about 50 minutes.
Everybody got off the plane except one lady who was blind. One man did noticed her as he walked by and could tell the lady was blind because her Seeing Eye dog lay quietly underneath the seats in front of her throughout the entire flight.
He could also tell she had flown this very flight before because the pilot approached her, and calling her by name, said, “Kathy, we are in Adelaide for almost an hour. Would you like to get off and stretch your legs?”
The blind lady replied, “No thanks, but maybe my dog would like to stretch his legs.” All the people in the gate area came to a complete standstill when they looked up and saw the pilot walk off the plane with a See-ing Eye dog! The pilot was even wearing sun-glasses. People scattered. They not only tried to change planes, but they were trying to change airlines!

Stevie & Cyril attend the 2026 Maleny Show
The Late Linda was a familiar face around the small hinterland town of Maleny. With her soft grey hair tucked beneath a faded blue sunhat and a gentle smile that rarely left her face, she was known for her kindness to both people and animals. Wherever she went, her loyal tan dachshund, Stevie, trotted faithfully beside her. Yet there was another companion that very few people knew about — Cyril, a calm and unusually friendly three-metre carpet snake who had become Stevie’s closest mate.
On a warm autumn morning in 2026, Linda decided to take Stevie to the 2026 Maleny Agricultural Show. The showgrounds were alive with noise and colour. Children raced between rides clutching fairy floss while farmers proudly displayed cattle, poultry and prize vegetables. Country music drifted across the grounds from a nearby pavilion, blending with the smell of hot chips and freshly grilled sausages from the food shed.
Stevie was beside himself with excitement. His little legs moved furiously as he explored every scent along the pathways. Linda laughed softly as she struggled to keep up with him. Slung across her shoulders was a large faded backpack. Hidden safely inside, curled comfortably in the warmth, was Cyril.
Linda knew many people would panic if they saw a large carpet snake, even though Cyril had never harmed anyone. He had been rescued years earlier after being injured near a rural property and had since become an unlikely member of Linda’s household. Stevie and Cyril were inseparable. The dachshund would often sleep curled beside the great snake in the afternoon sunshine.
Near lunchtime, Linda stopped beside the busy food shed to buy herself a cup of tea and a meat pie. She gently lowered the backpack onto the grass beside a timber wall while Stevie sniffed around nearby tables hoping for dropped scraps.
Unfortunately, Cyril had decided he wanted a look around.
The zip of the backpack had not been fully closed, and slowly the patterned head of the large carpet snake emerged into the sunlight. His tongue flickered curiously as he began to slither out onto the grass.
An elderly woman carrying a tray of scones spotted him.
“Snake!” she screamed.
Panic spread instantly around the food area. Chairs scraped backwards and several people hurried away. The frightened woman dropped her tray and, in a burst of fear, grabbed a length of timber leaning beside the shed. Holding it high, she charged towards Cyril, wildly swinging it at the snake’s head.
Stevie reacted immediately.
The little dachshund barked furiously and sprinted straight at the woman’s ankles. He darted back and forth, yapping loudly and forcing her to stumble sideways as she tried to swat at him instead. Stevie’s brave distraction gave Cyril the precious seconds he needed.
The great carpet snake moved swiftly across the ground and disappeared down the narrow gap beside the shed. Within moments he had vanished beneath the weathered timber structure.
Still clutching the piece of wood, the frightened woman followed after him, waving it nervously at
the darkness under the building.
“Get it out! Kill the thing!” she shouted.
Linda rushed over as fast as she could, horrified by the scene unfolding before her.
“Please stop!” she cried. “He won’t hurt anyone!” Stevie ran back to Linda’s feet, panting heavily but still growling protectively toward the woman with the timber. Linda knelt beside the shed and peered into the shadows beneath it.
“Cyril… come on, old boy,” she called gently.

Only silence came back from under the building.
The snake, frightened by the shouting and swinging timber, had wedged himself deep beneath the shed where nobody could reach him. Linda’s face tightened with worry. Stevie lay flat on the grass and stared into the darkness, whining softly for his friend.
Several onlookers gathered nearby, uncertain whether to laugh, panic or help. Some were amazed that the tiny dachshund had defended such an enormous snake. Others simply shook their heads at the strange sight of an elderly woman calmly coaxing a three-metre python from beneath a country show food shed.
For nearly half an hour Linda and Stevie remained there patiently calling to Cyril. Eventually the familiar sound of Stevie’s soft bark seemed to reassure the frightened snake. Slowly, Cyril’s patterned head appeared from beneath the shed.
“There you are,” Linda whispered with relief. With calm patience, she guided the great snake gently back toward the open backpack while Stevie stood proudly beside her, tail wagging. The crowd watched in stunned silence as the unlikely trio were reunited once again at the Maleny Show.
“Come on Stevie + Cyril” said the late Linda. “I think that is enough excitement for one day.”
She picked up the backpack and put it on her back and she and Stevie wandered off towards the front gate of the show-grounds.
“Well I never.” Said the elderly lady who was still clutching her piece of timber securely.
I don’t think that you should come next year Cyril. It is too dangerous there for you and I don’t want you to get hurt. It was lucky that Stevie could help you!” said the Late Linda.

Credit reporting concerns the recording of an individual’s credit worthiness and notes information about a person’s identity, any loan applications made, when the individual or a lender accessed the information and information about defaults. The credit reporting regime is regulated by the Commonwealth Privacy Act and the Credit Reporting Code of Conduct and can be done by any corporation. In Australia Veda Advantage (previously Baycorp Advantage Ltd.) and Dunn & Bradstreet are two major credit reporting corporations. When an individual makes a loan application the lender would most likely seek to access that individual’s credit report as part of the loan approval process. This access is noted on the individual’s file as well information about the name of the lender and the amount applied for. However the credit report does not record the success or otherwise of the individual’s credit application nor will the Privacy Act allow the recording of any other personal information such as political affiliations, religious beliefs, criminal history, medical history and sexual preferences.
Default information able to be noted on the credit report
concerns situations where a payment has been outstanding for more than 60 days, whether an individual is bankrupt, when a cheque for more than $100 has been dishonoured twice and when, in the opinion of the lender, the individual has committed a serious credit infringement such as acting fraudulently.
So how can you access a copy of your credit report? This can be done by simply contacting the credit reporting agency and requesting that a copy be made available. If a charge is requested for a copy of the report a complaint can be made to the Privacy Commissioner.
What if inaccurate information is noted on a person’s credit report?
The first step should be to contact the lender who listed the inaccurate information and ask that the listing be removed or amended within a reasonable time. 24 hours may not be an unreasonable timeframe where the error means that another lender would refuse a loan and therefore possibly risk a contract being terminated. If the lender refuses to amend the error then the next port of call would be to write a complaint to the credit reporting agency and request that they investigate the complaint.

Air taxi from Brisbane to Gold Coast in just 16 minutes
Targeted for commercial launch ahead of the 2032 Olympics is Queensland’s first electric air taxi network with plans promising 16-minute flights between Brisbane and the Gold Coast at Uber Black prices. Gold Coast mayor, Tom Tate said that the air taxis would initially operate with human pilots before transitioning to automated flights in a later phase. He continued that he wanted it up and running by 2030
The introduction of flying taxis faces considerable challenges, foremost among them being cost which is estimated at today’s cost for four passengers to be about $900.
Successful test flights have already been made in New York, and in Dubai. Pilotless electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles (eVTOLs) are already ferrying passengers in China.
Cities worldwide are competing to integrate flying taxis into their transportation networks.

Britain and Australia have long shared many similarities because of their common history, language, legal systems and cultural traditions. Australia was originally colonised by Britain, and for much of the twentieth century Australian society closely reflected British customs and lifestyles.
In recent decades, however, both countries have experienced very large levels of immigration from many parts of the world. As a result, the similarities between
modern Britain and modern Australia have become even more noticeable, particularly in relation to crowded cities, rising living costs, changing social conditions and increasingly multicultural communities.
One of the clearest similarities is the changing population structure in both countries. Britain has experienced significant migration from Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia, while Australia has accepted large numbers of migrants from Asia, India, the Middle East and Africa. Major cities such as London, Birmingham and Manchester now resemble Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane in their cultural diversity.
Walking through the streets of these cities, people encounter a wide range of languages, foods, religions and customs.
Restaurants, festivals and businesses from many cultures are now common features of daily life in both nations. In both
countries Islam is considered one of the fastest-growing religions whilst Christianity is declining.
Supporters of immigration argue that migrants contribute skills, labour and cultural diversity that strengthen society and help economies grow. In both Britain and Australia immigrants have filled shortages in health care, construction, transport and hospitality industries.
Universities in both countries do benefit from international students who contribute billions of dollars to the economy. Many migrants have started businesses, created employment opportunities and added to the cultural richness of urban life.
However, increasing immigration has also produced major social and economic pressures that many ordinary citizens in Britain and Australia now experience.

One of the most significant concerns is housing affordability. In both countries the rapid growth of population has increased demand for housing faster than governments and developers have been able to build homes. Property prices and rents have risen sharply, especially in major cities. Young people in London and Sydney often struggle to buy their first home, while rental shortages have forced many families into smaller housing or longer commuting distances. Homelessness has also become more visible in parts of both countries.
Transport infrastructure has also come under pressure. Roads in both Britain and Australia are increasingly congested, particularly during peak commuting times. Public transport systems in London, Melbourne and Sydney are often overcrowded. Hospitals, schools and other public services have found it difficult to keep pace with rapidly growing populations. In Australia, critics argue that governments have encouraged high migration levels without adequately expanding infrastructure. Similar complaints are often heard in Britain regarding pressure on the National Health Service, schools and local councils.
Another major similarity is the rising cost of living. Both Britain and Australia have seen significant increases in food prices, electricity costs, fuel prices and household expenses over recent years.
Population growth has contributed to greater demand for goods and services, while global economic disruptions, inflation and housing shortages have intensified financial pressure on households.
Working and middle-class families in both countries increasingly feel that their incomes do not stretch as far as they once did.
Social living conditions have also changed noticeably. Decades ago many suburbs and towns in both Britain and Australia were relatively stable communities where families often knew their neighbours well and shared similar cultural backgrounds. Today, rapid population movement and urban expansion have changed the social character of many areas. Some people welcome this diversity and enjoy exposure to new cultures and experiences. Others feel that traditional community identity and social cohesion have weakened. Many Britains feel that their country is broken in so many ways,
Concerns about crime, social division and reduced trust between groups are sometimes raised in public debate in both countries.
Studies from the late 1990s and early 2000s, such as those from the Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC), observed that, in certain areas, individuals born in Lebanon and Turkey were processed for criminal behaviour by police at a higher rate than the Australian-born population.
Australia is ranked third highest of fourteen countries studied in respect to crime trends in terms of overall victimisation, behind the other two non-European countries, the USA and Canada.
The nature of employment has also evolved. Increased migration has supplied additional labour in many industries, which some economists say helps control inflation and support economic growth.
However, critics argue that high migration can increase competition for jobs and place downward pressure on wages in certain sectors, especially lowerskilled employment. Younger workers in both Britain and Australia often face insecure casual employment, rising living expenses and difficulty saving money despite working full-time. See next Page
Cultural identity is another area where similarities exist between Britain and Australia. Both countries are debating how to balance multiculturalism with preserving traditional national identity.
In Britain there are continuing discussions about British values, integration and social unity. Australia experiences similar debates regarding Australian identity, citizenship and social cohesion. Sporting traditions, the English language and democratic institutions still strongly connect the two countries, but both societies are becoming more culturally complex and diverse than at any previous time in their history.
In the recent UK elections the British Labour Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is facing a backlash after the Reform UK party took nearly 30% of the seats in their parliament. The Reform UK party has campaigned on a broader platform, pledging to reduce taxation, limit immigration, oppose net-zero emissions policies and substantially reduce public spending.
This gives that party a grounding to take to both the Conservative Party, or with the Labour Party to start putting some of “their wants” into place if either of the above parties wants the Reform UK’s votes.
Looking behind the political speak there is a movement throughout Australia to do the same thing. Thus the rise in the One Nation popularity at the present time.
Despite these challenges, both Britain and Australia remain attractive countries in which to live. They continue to offer political stability, high standards of education, strong legal systems and opportunities for employment and personal freedom.
Many immigrants themselves contribute positively to their communities and seek the same goals as existing residents: security, prosperity and a better future for their families.
In conclusion, Britain and Australia increasingly resemble one another socially and economically because of largescale immigration and population growth.
Both nations have become more multicultural, while also facing similar pressures on housing, infrastructure, transport and the cost of living.
Social conditions have changed as communities become larger, more crowded and more diverse. While immigration has brought economic and cultural benefits, it has also created debates about affordability, social cohesion and national identity.
The experiences of Britain and Australia show how modern migration can reshape societies in complex and far-reaching ways. Not all of those ways are readily accepted by the home-grown population.
Analysis from early 2026 indicates that households are suffering the worst decline in living standards since the 1950s. Real wages have often fallen, and inflation in housing, food, and electricity has outpaced income growth, making many feel "broke" or under pressure
Many locally born Australians feel that the "Australian Dream" has become harder to achieve, leading to a strong sense of nostalgia for a simpler, more affordable past decades. Many also feel that the quality of life is diminishing.

In the eyes of many average Australians, Pauline Hanson and the One Nation party may no longer appear as politically isolated as they once did, particularly after the recent election results in South Australia and the federal by-election in Farrer.
Whether people agree with her or not, the growing support for Pauline Hanson's One Nation suggests that a significant section of the public believes the major parties have failed to properly address concerns about migration, housing pressure, infrastructure strain and the rising cost of living.
The strongest evidence came from the 2026 South Australian election, where One Nation recorded a dramatic surge in support. The party secured almost 23 per cent of the primary vote in the lower house and even outpolled the Liberal Party in several areas. Many political observers interpreted this as a protest vote from ordinary Australians who feel ignored by both Labor and the Coalition.
For years, Hanson has argued that Australia’s migration intake has been too high and that rapid population growth places enormous pressure on housing, hospitals, schools, roads and wages. Critics often labelled her views extreme or divisive. However, many Australians now see overcrowded roads, soaring rents and a worsening housing shortage in their daily lives. In that environment, Hanson’s warnings no longer sound as fringe to some voters as they once did.
The recent Farrer by-election added even more weight to this argument. One Nation achieved a historic victory in the traditionally conservative seat, with candidate David Farley winning almost 40 per cent of the primary vote.
The result shocked both major parties and demonstrated that dissatisfaction is not limited to one state or region. Rural and regional Australians, in particular, increasingly believe the political establishment is disconnected from everyday struggles.
Another important factor is that concern over migration is no longer confined to One Nation supporters alone.
Recent polling found that around two-thirds of Australians believe immigration levels are currently “too high.” Rising rents, housing affordability problems and pressure on infrastructure have caused many voters to question whether Australia’s migration program has expanded faster than the country can properly accommodate.
Supporters of Hanson argue that she is simply saying openly what many Australians quietly think. They believe migration should be reduced temporarily until housing supply, transport systems and essential services can catch up. To these voters, this is not about race or hostility toward migrants, but about economic sustainability and quality of life.
At the same time, critics argue that migration has long been essential to Australia’s economy and workforce growth. Skilled migrants help fill labour shortages in healthcare, construction and regional industries. Opponents also fear that blaming migrants for broader economic problems oversimplifies complicated issues such as government planning failures and housing policy mistakes.
Nevertheless, election results matter in politics, and the South Australian and Farrer outcomes clearly showed that One Nation’s message is resonating with a growing number of Australians. Whether this represents a lasting political shift remains uncertain, but it does indicate that concerns about migration, national identity and economic pressure are becoming increasingly influential in Australian political debate.

Broken down troop train in Landsborough
We have just passed the 82nd anniversary of the D-Day landing on the beaches of Normandy.
But did you know that on July 1942, another storming of the beaches or a sort happened closer to home? It happened at the railway station at Landsborough.
A troop train carrying American soldiers travelling north on the single-track line broke down at Landsborough station. Because it was a cold day, the hungry troops emptied the local railway refreshment room of all its food.
The breakdown occurred during a massive military buildup following the Battle of the Coral Sea, as thousands of U.S. and Australian troops were moved to North Queensland and the Atherton Tablelands.
Coincidentally, a number of ladies and girls from around the Landsborough area had been gathered to attend a non-denominational church service which was being conducted by Padre Hartley.
With the approval of the Padre, they got together and prepared a great supper for the stranded soldiers. The train was soon repaired and continued on its way!

Maleny SES looking for volunteers
Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.
You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.
Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.
An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, flood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.
Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.
Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..

The Maleny Visitor Information Centre is a not for profit, long-standing, independent community service, run by volunteers. The Centre is a ticket selling agency for Maleny Film Society movie screenings along with a range of quality souvenirs and postcards, with a distinctively Maleny flavour along with information about places and events around the area.

“How quickly changes in Maleny” Maleny Primary School & “High Top” 1957
Few would realise that the Maleny High School actually started at the Maleny Primary School site in Bunya Street I/n 1957, two years before the primary school actually started there in 1959. Other local district schools also relocated to the new site with their students being bussed to the new Maleny Primary School and this has continued until today!.
In 1987 the present Maleny High School began accepting students.
