The Maleny Rangers Football Club has secured its $350,000 State Government grant to improve their facilities in the Maleny Showgrounds. To this, they have also raised $85,000, which will allow the club to build new change rooms. This would mean we have changerooms for both men’s and women’s home and away teams. In future, the males and females will not have to share facilities. A further community-led fundraising effort will be required for broader clubhouse upgrades, including improvements to the men’s change rooms, structural repairs, new paintwork, and the addition of an outdoor social bar. Club president Dr Sam Manger said, “It’s inspiring to know the community spirit is still alive and well.”

The Australian coal miners’ strike of 1949 was sparked by a clash between the miners’ basic rights and concerns, and the government’s interest in supporting business and mining interests. Coal mining had a high fatality rate, with around 25 miners being killed at work annually, so miners sought the implementation of essential safety policies, as well as a 35-hour week, long service leave, and a 30 shilling a week pay rise. The strike lasted for seven weeks.

Electric scooter dangers! In Queensland, e-scooter injuries are on the rise. Queensland has seen a signi cant increase in e-scooterrelated issues, including accidents, injuries, deaths, and rule infringements in the 2024-2025 year. Electric scooters (e-scooters), including e-bikes, have rapidly become a popular mode of urban transport, offering a convenient and environmentally friendly way to travel short distances. However, their growing presence on city streets has also led to increasing safety concerns and dangers. E-scooter injuries are more frequent during nighttime hours, according to a recent study, and many may be linked to alcohol intoxication. In a Sunshine Coast study, 42% of paediatric e-scooter injuries involved riders not wearing helmets and exceeding speeds of 30kph. Eight people died in Queensland in 2024 while riding e-scooters. Police data has revealed four people have already died in e-scooter accidents on Queensland roads so far in 2025. One major issue is the lack of regulation and infrastructure. Many riders use footpaths or roads without dedicated lanes, increasing the risk of accidents with pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles. Inexperience and reckless behaviour, such as speeding or riding without helmets, contribute signi cantly to injuries. According to various health agencies, emergency departments are reporting rising numbers of e-scooterrelated accidents, including serious head and limb injuries.

E-scooters are also hazardous when poorly parked or abandoned, as they can block walkways and trip pedestrians, particularly the elderly or vision-impaired. Nighttime visibility is another problem, with some riders operating without proper lighting or re ective gear, making them dif cult to spot by motorists.
“I assumed everyone in Maleny was either for the Lions, Broncos or the Maroons. What team do you cheer for?” the reporter asks.
Additionally, some models can reach speeds over 25 km/h, and with minimal protection, riders are vulnerable in collisions. Without stricter enforcement of safety standards and better rider education, the dangers posed by e-scooters are likely to increase as their popularity continues to rise in Australian cities.
The reporter starts a new sheet in his notebook and writes: “Little Redneck Cockroach Vandalises Fence and Kills Beloved Family Pet.”
The lack of a system of identi cation on e-scooters has also increased the chances of being penalised when offences have been committed or being involved in an incident. Riders should realise that these vehicles can be dangerous!

Stevie the Security Dog at the Maleny Paint Shop visits Rome Stevie the daschound security dog at the Maleny Paint Shop in Lawyer Street, Maleny, tan dachshund had always dreamed of visiting Rome and seeing the ancient buildings. He'd seen them on postcards, and sniffed Roman pizzas in pizza boxes, and once chewed a slipper shaped like the Colosseum. So when he nally landed in Rome, he brought along his best mate: Cyril, a three-meter-long python with a fondness for gelato and surprising pigeons. They were quite the sight. As they strutted past the Trevi Fountain, Cyril slithered alongside Stevie, wearing a sunhat and sipping from a straw poked into a coconut. Tourists gasped, children screamed, and a nun dropped her gelato. “Relax,” Stevie barked. “He’s a vegetarian now. Only eats zucchinis and occasionally socks.” At the Colosseum, a tour guide fainted when Cyril tried to pose for a photo wrapped around a pillar. Stevie, ever the professional, adjusted his tiny camera tripod and Maleny Paint Supplies security dog, Steve has a busy working life! said, “We call this one Constrictor Chic.” Later, they visited the Vatican, where Cyril accidentally got tangled in a group of Swiss Guards, creating what historians now refer to as “The Great Hat Incident.” As they sat by the Tiber River that evening, Stevie sighed happily. “Rome is everything I hoped for.” Cyril burped and nodded. “Best. Holiday. Ever.” And together, they planned Paris next.

The Maleny Show has come and gone for this year, but the Brisbane Ekka is about to start. Agricultural shows throughout Australia have always been important in bringing local communities together. The Brisbane EKKA began in 1876 as the Intercolonial Exhibition and has evolved into a vibrant event with a rich history and traditions and provided plenty of entertainment for generations of Australians. With the Brisbane Exhibition (The EKKA) about to start, people from all around Australia are preparing animals and products to be displayed and judged!

Over the past 100 years, these events have transformed dramatically, re ecting the changes in Australian agriculture, technology, and society. To many of us who have grown up with the excitement of local agricultural shows, it all culminated with the Brisbane EKKA in August each year. Over those 100 years, attractions at agricultural shows in Australia have evolved from simple rural displays into wide-ranging
In the early 20th century, attractions were mainly practical and community-focused.
While the core purpose of promoting agricultural excellence remains, the variety of attractions has expanded dramatically to appeal to broader audiences from both city and country.
Produce tables featured vegetables, preserves, jams, and baked goods, often judged by local experts. These attractions not only encouraged friendly competition but also shared knowledge and fostered a sense of pride in rural craftsmanship. In 1951, Mr. Ernest Lawley, of Maleny, Queensland, won rst prize in the State Dairy Farm Competition for zones one and two with a score of 3208 points. Sideshow alley also began to appear around this time, offering games of chance, simple rides, and showmen’s tricks. As the decades progressed, particularly from the 1950s onward, agricultural shows began to grow into more inclusive events. Motorised rides, Ferris wheels, and merry-go-rounds became standard attractions, especially as electricity and better infrastructure reached more rural towns. In 1954, Queen Elizabeth 11 and Prince Philip visited the EKKA. Showbags, which had started as simple promotional giveaways, became colourful and highly soughtafter treats for children and teenagers. By the 1980s and 1990s, Australian agricultural shows had transformed into major events that offered a mix of tradition and spectacle. Attractions now included stunt shows, reworks, motocross displays, dog agility competitions, and live music performances. City-based shows such as the Royal Melbourne Show and Brisbane’s Ekka began incorporating fashion parades, celebrity chef cooking demonstrations, and cultural performances. These additions aimed to attract urban families and bridge the growing divide between city and country lifestyles. Educational attractions also gained prominence. Interactive agricultural exhibits, petting zoos, and “from paddock to plate” experiences were introduced to teach city visitors where their food comes from. Schools and children’s groups were often invited to participate in educational competitions and learn about farm animals and produce rsthand. Today’s agricultural show attractions represent a vibrant blend of old and new. While still celebrating farming and rural life, they now also serve as platforms for innovation, education, and entertainment for all ages. This evolution has helped keep shows relevant and thriving in an increasingly urbanised society, ensuring they remain treasured annual events across Australia. Today, agricultural shows continue to play a vital role in community identity, youth development (particularly through organisations like the Country Women’s Association and Young Farmers groups), and promoting Australian agriculture to the wider public. Events such as cattle parades, cake competitions, and shearing contests coexist with drone ying competitions and ag-tech displays. For younger people who may not have much association with country Queensland, an Ekka Excursion is a great way to engage with Australian agriculture in a memorable way by providing unique hands-on learning activities.
For parents with younger visitors, it is advisable to collect a FREE wristband from the Ekka Police Station marquee on Gregory Terrace. Police will write down your contact details on the band so that if you and your child become separated, they will be able to reunite you ASAP. Remember to organise for your child to meet you at the Ekka police station if either you or they become lost. Monday, August 1, 1949. The Snowy Mountains Authority came into being, initiating Australia’s greatest feat of engineering in the 20th century.
The vision of the club is to provide country club services to be enjoyed by the local community and visitors to the area.
The Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme is a hydroelectricity and irrigation scheme in Australia, covering about 5,124 square kilometres in southern New South Wales. Considered to be one of the wonders of the modern engineering world, it involves sixteen dams, seven power stations, a pumping station, 145 km of underground tunnels and 80 km of aqueducts. The scheme generates enough electricity to meet roughly 10% of the needs of New South Wales, depending on seasonal rainfall and melting snow.
The excellent facilities of the Witta Recreation Club are available for hire for events such as weddings, sports days, family gatherings. The club has a Certi ed Kitchen/Catering facilities including a stove, pots & pans, dishwasher, crockery and utensils. The Bushman’s Bar is practically tted out with a large capacity for the cold storage of a range of beverages. The Bushman’s Bar is located at the core of the Witta Recreation Club. Service from the bar can be provided to customers on the covered hard standing overlooking the playing pitches, or directly into the Clubroom.
During construction, over 100,000 men and women from over 30 countries worked on the Scheme, whilst Australians made up most of the workforce. Some 121 people died whilst working on the project, but for its size it maintained a high safety record.

What to do if you need assistance
You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer. Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies. An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, ood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search. Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way. Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..

Maleny Visitor Information Centre The Maleny Visitor Information Centre is a not for pro t, long-standing, independent community service, run by volunteers. The Centre is a ticket selling agency for Maleny Film Society movie screenings along with a range of quality souvenirs and postcards, with a distinctively Maleny avour along with information about places and events around the area.

“Celebrating 100 years of settlement in Maleny”
The rst European to document Maleny was the explorer Ludwig Leichhardt who describes the area in his travel diary in 1844. The rst European settlement followed in the wake of the Gympie gold rush of 1867. A track linking Maleny to Landsborough was cut in 1880. In 1980 a celebration parade was held to mark the rst 100 years of the settlement of Maleny. In keeping with the timber industry a bullock team and horsemen attracted much attention as they passed the Maleny State School.
