Following the nal session of the 2026 Para Pan Paci c Championships at Walnut, California, it was almost impossible for the Australian Dolphins team not to dream of LA 2028 and beyond. These championships were held with great excitement as the 2022 championships, which were to be held in Canada, were cancelled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. In a night of racing featuring Australia’s brightest Para Pan swimmers, including budding teenagers Kael Thompson, Declan Budd and Victoria Belando Nicholson – along with experienced Dolphins Ben Hance and Rowan Crothers - the team signed off in style at the most important meet of the year, the Para Pan Pacs. Maleny Showgirl and Trailblazers member Kael Thompson has claimed a bronze medal in the women’s 100m butter y in her rst senior international meet, and followed it up with a silver in the S14 mixed 4x100m freestyle relay as part of the Australian Dolphins team. Kael, you have represented yourself, your family, and this community with so much grace and grit. The Maleny community couldn’t be prouder of one of their own.

Round 127 of the Gambling Community Bene t Fund is now open, with grants of up to $35,000 available for eligible not-for-pro t organisations across Queensland. Funding can be used for a wide range of projects, including purchasing sporting equipment, upgrading community facilities, providing rst aid training, holding local events, and installing solar systems and shade sails. There ia a new online grants portal, making it easier for organisations to apply, submit and track applications.

ELECTION 2020 PROMISES HAVE BEEN DELIVERED I have met my election commitments from the 2020 election.
Which included:
Over the past 4 years, I have delivered a high standard of maintenance to our roads, streets, parks, reserves, lookouts, council-controlled sporting facilities, cemeteries, and signage. All the range lookouts have been upgraded, with the removal of trees and weeds blocking the beautiful views and vistas. In addition, picnic facilities, carparks, signage and viewing areas have been replaced and or upgraded. Bitumen Roads have had potholes rapidly repaired, signs repaired and cleaned, and white lines and pedestrian crossings have been regularly maintained. Additional lighting has been installed at many pedestrian crossings to improve visibility. 100’s of street trees has been planted alongside many roads, streets and in parks. Tree free days have been held in Palmwoods, Woombye, Mooloolah, Montville and Maleny. Parks have been upgraded, shade sails installed over most children’s play areas, soft fall materials upgraded, skate parks upgraded where required and shelter sheds either upgraded or replaced. Gravel roads are numerous in the rural areas west of the Bruce Highway. Despite often challenging and extreme weather conditions, our maintenance gangs have managed to gravel and grade roads as and when required. We appreciate residents’ patience because after severs storms or rainfall, it takes time to service all roads in the hinterland. The average cost of upgrading a gravel road to bitumen seal standard exceeds $1.9million per kilometre. Next term, hopefully council will agree to a signi cant increase in funding for sealing of gravel roads. During this term the following roads have been part sealed or totally sealed, Mossey Bank Road Eudlo, Perrens Road Eudlo, McGilchrest Road Eudlo, Brandenburg Road Mooloolah/Bald Knob, Citrus Road Palmwoods/Eudlo. Designs have been completed for Christensen Road Palmwoods, Logwoods Road Eudlo, lower section of Perrins Road Eudlo, Sunridge Road Landershoot, Upper Landershoot Road from Sunridge Road down to Landershute Road, additional sections of Brandenburg Road, Bald Knob. Additional roads are being loaded into the new program and will be designed and completed as funds become available. Concept design has been nalised and approved by full council, for the development of a 65-hectare Ecological Park on the northern boundary of Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. The proposed master plan for Maleny Community Precinct will be displayed for public comment before June 2024. Mowing of road verges, parks and beside footpaths has been challenging due to wet weather. Despite this, mowing is carried out on a regular rotational basis. Occasionally when the ground is sodden, we cannot use heavy mowing machines until the ground dries out. When we experience high humidity and wet or warm conditions, grass grows rapidly, and this delays our mowing program. Finally, I wish to thank the wonderful residents of Division 5. You have always made me most welcome and serving as your Councillor on Sunshine Coast Council, has been a delightful privilege.
Winston was rst elected to the Landsborough Shire Council in 1982 and remained in of ce until 1999, when Landsborough Shire became known as Caloundra City Council. It later became part of the Sunshine Coast Council area. He then “retired” but made a comeback in 2020 when he successfully stood for election against nine other candidates for division ve after the retirement of long-serving councillor Jenny Mackay.

Maleny Hospital 1920’s
The rst steps to provide a hospital in Maleny were taken in 1917, when it was decided to build a hospital in honour of those who'd enlisted in the AIF to ght in the First World War. Private subscriptions fully funded it. It opened in October 1921 and was used until 1987, when it moved across the road in Bean Street.

While taking a break from lming an underwater documentary called Ocean's Deadliest, Steve decided to record footage in shallow water for a segment on his daughter Bindi's television show. He swam near a large short-tail stingray, and it unexpectedly propped up and struck outward with its barbed tail multiple times in a matter of seconds, piercing Steve’s heart.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions Development of humanoid robots needs to be tightly controlled
Truthful says that his sixteen year-old grandson came home with a brand new Ford F150. His father and I looked at the truck and asked, “Where did you get that truck?!”
A robot designed to move with human-like balance, recognise objects, understand spoken commands, operate autonomously and function in dif cult environments already possesses many of the fundamental attributes required for military robotics. The difference between programming a machine to deliver supplies at an Olympic venue and programming it to carry equipment across a battle eld may ultimately be one of software, hardware protection and mission objectives.
“It was the lady up the street,” says the boy. “I don’t know her name – they just moved in. She saw me ride past on my bike and asked me if I wanted to buy her F150 for fteen dollars.
That raises an important question for governments and society: “how much autonomy should machines ultimately be given when human lives are at stake?” The danger is not necessarily that a robot suddenly becomes a battle eld weapon. I. t is that capabilities developed incrementally for peaceful purposes gradually make military applications cheaper, easier and more practical. The journey from entertaining crowds at an Olympic Games to performing dangerous tasks in a war zone could therefore be considerably shorter than many people imagine. The real challenge is ensuring that technological progress does not outrun ethical judgment and effective human control.

The have just witnessed China hosting its second world humanoid robots Olympics. Competitions ranged from standard sports like soccer, table tennis, boxing, weightlifting, and tug-of-war to traditional Chinese disciplines like Tai Chi and pitch-pot. The development of humanoid robots for the Olympic Games may appear to be a harmless demonstration of technology, entertainment and human–machine cooperation. Yet beneath the spectacle lies a potentially signi cant technological crossroads. The same capabilities that allow a humanoid robot to assist athletes, carry equipment, navigate crowded venues or perform complex physical tasks could eventually have military applications.
This does not mean Olympic robots will inevitably become weapons. The transition would require substantial additional development, particularly in communications, cybersecurity, endurance, reliability and military-speci c systems. Nevertheless, the underlying technology is increasingly dual-use.

He introduces himself as the grand-father of the boy to whom she had sold a new Ford F150 truck for fteen dollars and asks to know why she did it. “Well,” she says, “two days ago my husband left on a business trip. Yesterday I got a phone call from his boss and found out that he really ran off to Hawaii with his secretary and doesn’t intend to come back.” “Oh, my goodness, I’m so sorry,” Truthful says. “But what does that have to do with my grandson and your truck?” “Well, this morning he called and told me he was stranded because he got robbed of his wallet with all his credit cards and cash. Stevie & Cyril and the “mad crow” adventure!
T
he afternoon sun was shining warmly through the glass-enclosed sunroom at Stevie’s house, making it the perfect place for a serious afternoon of doing absolutely nothing.
Stevie, a tan dachshund with a long body, short legs and a very important-looking nose, was stretched out on his favourite dog bed. Beside him was his best mate, Cyril, a threemetre carpet snake who had somehow managed to squeeze most of his enormous body onto the same bed. It was a tight t.
“Cyril,” Stevie grumbled, opening one eye, “you’re lying on my tail.” “Impossible,” replied Cyril lazily. “I don’t have legs, so I can’t tell where your tail nishes and my body begins.” Stevie sighed and went back to sleep. The room was beautifully warm. Outside, the garden was peaceful, the birds were chirping and everything seemed perfect. Then suddenly— TAP! TAP! TAP! Stevie’s eyes ew open. “What was that?” TAP! TAP! TAP! TAP! A large black crow was sitting on the outside window, pecking furiously at the glass. Stevie stared at it. The crow stared back. Stevie barked. WOOF! The crow pecked the glass even harder. TAP! TAP! TAP! TAP! Stevie scrambled onto all four legs. “Go away!” he barked. The crow tilted its head as though Stevie had just told it the funniest joke in the world. Then it pecked again. TAP! TAP! TAP! TAP! Stevie barked louder.
The crow pecked harder.
Stevie barked louder still.
The crow went absolutely mad.
Cyril, who had been trying very hard to ignore the commotion, nally lifted his head. “Stevie, I think that bird is deliberately annoying you.” “I KNOW!” Stevie barked. Cyril slowly uncoiled himself from the dog bed. “This requires my attention.” He raised the front part of his body several inches off the oor and faced the crow directly. The crow stopped pecking.

For a moment, there was complete silence. Cyril stared at the crow. The crow stared at Cyril. Then Cyril began icking his tongue furiously. Flick! Flick! Flick! The crow responded with another peck. TAP! Cyril icked faster. Flick! Flick! Flick! Flick! The crow pecked faster. TAP! TAP! TAP! TAP! Stevie joined in again. “WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!” The crow seemed delighted. For the next several minutes, the sunroom became the site of one of the strangest arguments in Maleny.

Cyril icked. The crow pecked.

A not quite local semi driver had picked up a load at Acacia Ridge to return it to Beerwah. On that Tuesday morning, Barry- well, we will call him by that name- discovered something worse. He was crawling along in his semi-trailer when the engine coughed. He had run out of fuel. Where did he happen to be? On a busy motorway on Brisbanes Northside. Within seconds, traf c behind him stretched into the distance. Horns began sounding like an orchestra warming up. One motorist yelled, “Mate, you can’t park there!” Barry climbed down and shouted back, “I’m not parking. The truck has retired!” A taxi driver offered him a lift to the nearest service station. Barry looked at the enormous trailer blocking half the road. “I appreciate that,” he said, “but unless your taxi has a towbar and a 600-litre fuel tank, I think I’ll stay here.” By lunchtime, Barry had achieved something Brisbane politicians had been promising for years: He had successfully stopped Brisbane traf c.
Witta Recreation Club to hold 100-year celebration On Saturday, 12 September 2026, you are invited to help celebrate an incredible 100 years of the Witta Recreation Club! A huge day and night are planned, with something for the whole family, starting at 10 a.m. and continuing until 3 p.m. This is a free event. This will be followed by a night of live music starting at 6 p.m. Entry to the night concert is by ticket, which costs $20 and will be available at the door. The bar will be open un til late, and there will be FREE CAMPING. The club was established in the 1920s to maintain the local sports grounds and support community events in the historic Witta area.

How the World Changed
This month marks 25 years since two hijacked planes hit the Twin Towers. buildings fell down, destroying much of the area around them. A third plane hit the military building near Washington, D.C. A fourth plane crashed in an empty eld because brave passengers stopped the hijackers from reaching their target.

That day, nearly 3,000 people died, including hundreds of emergency workers who tried to save others. The actions of that day changed the whole face of the world forever!

n average, the South Tower Observation Deck attracted 1.8 million visitors per year.
However, on February 26, 1993, the World Trade Centre was rst bombed. A terrorist attack in New York City in which a truck bomb exploded in a basement-level parking garage under the World Trade Centre complex. Six people were killed, and more than 1,000 were injured in what was at that time the deadliest act of terrorism perpetrated on U.S. soil. This attack was carried out by a terrorist group called al-Qaeda, led by Osama bin Laden. Because the Trade Centre did not collapse, bin Laden saw it as a failure. As a result, he planned a further attack. On September 11, 2001, the world changed in a way few people could have imagined. Before that morning, international terrorism was certainly a serious concern, but for most ordinary people in Western democracies it remained something distant—something that happened somewhere else, to someone else. The attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York and the Pentagon in Washington shattered that sense of security. The hijacking of four passenger aircraft and the deaths of almost 3,000 people transformed international politics, national security, travel, immigration, military strategy and even the way ordinary people thought about their personal safety. The hijackers, 19 in all, most of whom were from Saudi Arabia, established themselves in California,

the United States and began preparations that included, under their real names, renting an apartment, obtaining driver’s licenses, opening bank accounts, purchasing a car, and taking ight lessons at a local ight school. These preparations were all in preparation actions that occurred on September 11th, 2001, a day now looked upon as “a day of infamy”. The attacks were carried out by 19 al-Qaeda terrorists who hijacked four commercial aircraft. Two were deliberately own into New York's World Trade Centre towers, another struck the Pentagon, and the fourth crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to regain control of the aircraft. The images of the burning towers, followed by their catastrophic collapse, were broadcast around the world. Millions of people watched events unfold in real time, creating a shared experience of shock and disbelief. Perhaps the greatest change was psychological. Prior to September 11th, the United States and many of its allies had enjoyed a powerful sense of geographical protection. Oceans, distance and military strength appeared to provide security from conventional attacks. September 11th demonstrated that an enemy did not need tanks, aircraft or an invading army to in ict enormous damage. A small group of determined individuals could exploit modern transportation and communications systems and strike at the heart of the world's most powerful nation.

Bush declared a "War on Terror", and within weeks the United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan to remove the Taliban regime, which had provided sanctuary to al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and his organisation. The con ict eventually became America's longest war. What began as a campaign against terrorism developed into a much broader attempt at nation-building and political transformation. The consequences extended beyond Afghanistan. In 2003, the United States led an invasion of Iraq, arguing that Saddam Hussein's regime posed a security threat and possessed weapons of mass destruction. Those weapons were not subsequently found, and the Iraq War became one of the most controversial consequences of the post-September 11th security environment. The invasion destabilised the region, contributed to prolonged con ict and helped create conditions in which extremist organisations could ourish. September 11th also transformed the meaning of national security. Governments dramatically expanded their counter-terrorism capabilities. Intelligence agencies received greater powers and resources, while international cooperation increased. Information sharing between
countries became more important, and nancial systems were scrutinised for terrorist funding. Governments also became increasingly interested in electronic communications, passenger information and other forms of surveillance. For ordinary travellers, the change was immediately visible. Airport security became far more intrusive. Before September 11th, airline passengers could generally move through airports

The social consequences were equally signi cant. Muslim communities in many Western countries experienced increased suspicion, discrimination and hostility, despite the fact that the overwhelming majority of Muslims had nothing to do with terrorism and many strongly condemned the attacks. The distinction between Islam, Muslims and Islamist extremism became an important subject of public debate. Immigration and national identity also became increasingly connected to questions of security.

Governments introduced new counter-terrorism legislation, expanded surveillance and strengthened police and intelligence powers. Supporters argued that extraordinary threats required extraordinary measures. Critics warned that permanent emergency powers could undermine civil liberties and privacy.
The attacks also changed military thinking. The traditional concept of warfare involved states ghting states. September 11th demonstrated the enormous threat posed by non-state organisations operating across international borders. Governments began

The economic consequences were substantial. Financial markets fell sharply, international tourism suffered and airlines experienced enormous disruption. The insurance, aviation, and security industries were transformed. More broadly, businesses began paying greater attention to continuity planning, emergency preparedness and the possibility of disruptions caused by terrorism or geopolitical instability. Yet perhaps the most profound change was that September 11 ended an era of relative optimism about the world's direction. The 1990s had followed the end of the Cold War and were characterised by expectations that globalisation, international trade and technological progress would gradually produce a more peaceful and interconnected world. September 11th exposed a darker reality. Globalisation had connected people and economies —but it had also connected threats. Twenty- ve years later, the consequences remain visible. The War on Terror reshaped foreign policy, military alliances and domestic security systems. The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq in uenced an entire generation. Terrorist organisations changed their methods, governments expanded surveillance and airport security became a permanent feature of modern life. September 11th did not simply change America's history. It changed the world's priorities. Security moved much closer to the centre of government

policy and public consciousness. The de nition of warfare expanded, the balance between freedom and security became more contentious, and terrorism became a permanent feature of international strategic thinking. The world did not lose its commitment to progress after September 11, but its understanding of progress changed. The lesson was painfully simple: technological advancement, economic prosperity and military power cannot guarantee security. A connected world is also a vulnerable world. The challenge since that terrible day has been to protect open societies without letting fear destroy the freedoms and values those societies are meant to protect. Why have Muslim extremists taken this course of action? These groups hate the United States. They oppose U.S.and military presence in the Middle East, as well as American support for Israel and certain Middle Eastern governments. In March 2003, President Bush issued the order for war and thus came the invasion of Iraq. This led the U.S. to start a long "War on Terror”, and that changed global travel safety forever. Following September 11th, al-Qaeda—whose name in Arabic means “the base”—lost the best base it ever had in Afghanistan because of actions by the United States military, even though a decade later it was back in its hands. Twenty- ve years since the attacks, the world is still living with their consequences. From far-reaching counterterrorism measures to the enduring impacts of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, September 11th has changed the global order and the way we live our lives forever. The Queensland Government is moving to introduce sweeping 2026 reforms for e-mobility vehicles. This comes after 12 deaths and more than 6,300 hospital presentations linked to e-mobility incidents in the past year alone. Of the injury presentations, 1,100 involved children under 16, with almost a third of riders travelling above the 25 km/h limit when injured. The reforms include mandatory rider licensing, a minimum age of 16 for e-bikes, and a 10km/h speed limit on footpaths. These laws, which require a learner’s licence, aim to address safety. Police will get powers to seize illegal devices, particularly those with motors over 250W. They will also gain the authority to conduct random breath tests, seize devices on rst offence, and pursue penalties through the State Penalties Enforcement Registry. Parents may be held liable when minors breach regulations.

With the huge array of varieties, textures, tones, and shapes, it's never been easier to design your very own succulent bowl that will take pride of place on your bench top, balcony or garden. Step 1: Layer some rocks or pebbles in the base of the pot if you have them - this will help with drainage.

Maleny Tennis Club celebrates 100 years On May 3rd a milestone for the Maleny Tennis Club was celebrated as it turned 100 years. The club was formed in April 1926 at the Maleny Show-grounds and has survived there for the whole 100 years/. The early courts were clay, often prepared and maintained by dedicated volunteers like Wally Petersen. Today the four ood-lit courts are synthetic grass. Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.
What to do if you need assistance
You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer. Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies. An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, ood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search. Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way. Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..

Maleny Visitor Information Centre The Maleny Visitor Information Centre is a not for pro t, long-standing, independent community service, run by volunteers. The Centre is a ticket selling agency for Maleny Film Society movie screenings along with a range of quality souvenirs and postcards, with a distinctively Maleny avour along with information about places and events around the area.

The vision of the club is to provide country club services to be enjoyed by the local community and visitors to the area. The excellent facilities of the Witta Recreation Club are available for hire for events such as weddings, sports days, family gatherings. The club has a Certi ed Kitchen/Catering facilities including a stove, pots & pans, dishwasher, crockery and utensils.
