Queensland Flu Vaccine program
The Queensland Government is expanding the flu vaccine program for 2026 for every Queenslander over six months of age. The program will run from March 1st until September 2026. These vaccines will be free; however, the practitioner may charge a service fee. It would be safe to check before getting the jab.
Queensland’s Chief Health Officer, Dr Gale, said all Queenslanders are encouraged to get a flu jab. This year will be the first year that a needle-free vaccine via a nasal spray will be available for children aged between two and five years of age.
In an effort to ensure that the vaccine is available to all, legislation will also be enacted to allow for more trained health practitioners, such as registered nurses and pharmacists, to deliver the injections.
With flu vaccination rates declining in recent years, this program will eliminate or reduce cost as a barrier.
Maleny Skate Park Upgrade completed
The Maleny Skate Park, which is located in the Maleny Showgrounds, has just had a major upgrade completed by the Sunshine Coast Council.
This upgrade provides an exciting new space for skaters, scooter riders, and BMX riders. This upgrade was completed following extensive consultation with the Maleny skateboard community and local riders.
The skate park, designed for riders of all skill levels, offers a safe environment for everyone to enjoy. The area now includes new seating and landscaping, making it a welcoming space for families and spectators.
In its day this was thought to be as modern as an office could get! Thanks QWERTY
Local State Member, Minister for Tourism and Member for Glasshouse, Mr Andrew Powell, encouraged locals to get out and enjoy the new facility.
He said, “The improved Maleny Skatepark is a great investment in our young people and in the future of our community. It gives our youth a safe, inclusive space to keep active, build confidence, and connect with friends.”
Local Sunshine Coast Councillor, Cr Johnston, said, “This is a great example of how the Sunshine Coast Council is connecting and engaging with our communities to build a better future for everyone.”
It is proposed that this area will be a central gathering point that fosters social ties among Maleny’s younger residents and their families.

The State Government will be introducing tough new laws to Parliament this week as a strong, decisive action to fight antisemitism and address terroristmotivated offending to ensure Queenslanders can live, worship, and gather safely.
The new laws also complement the Federal Government’s efforts, including the Combatting Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism Bill 2026, which was passed in January 2026 to strengthen criminal, migration, and customs laws nationwide.
The new laws focus on criminalising specific hate speech and symbols, while significantly increasing existing penalties.
Queensland Jewish Board of Deputies president Jason Steinberg said the reforms will make the Jewish community feel safer, more protected, and confident about living their lives openly.

Free Parking Returns to Caloundra CBD
From 2 March, shopping in Bulcock Street, Caloundra will be a bit easier with free parking returning to the Caloundra CBD starting on the 2nd March!

It is great to be back on the Sunshine Coast, hosting more busy listening posts. People spoke about cost of living pressures, local infrastructure, small business challenges, and the need for a stronger, united Opposition focused on economic competence to bring some reality back to the Australian community. Families and small businesses in Fisher are being squeezed by Labour’s cost of living crisis. The weekly shop, power bills, rent, and mortgages are all rising, and locals are paying the price. Inflation has surged, essential costs are up across the board, and mortgage holders are already thousands of dollars worse off. Australians are working harder but getting ahead less. At the same time, small businesses are being buried in red tape and higher operating costs, making it even harder to grow, employ locals, and keep prices down. We need to ease the pressure, restore discipline to the economy, and back small business because when Fisher families and businesses do well, our whole community thrives.

On February 20th 1913 commencement of construction on the city of Canberra. The city was designed by Walter Burley Griffin who was an American architect and landscape architect. He designed Canberra, Australia's capital city to be a city that is not like any other in the world.
King O’Malley was an American-born Australian politician who served in the House of Representatives drove in the first survey peg to mark the commencement of work on the construction of Canberra.

How did Globalisation damage Australia’s Lifestyle
Globalisation has delivered undeniable economic integration and consumer choice, yet for many Australians it has also eroded aspects of the traditional Australian lifestyle. The impacts are most visible in employment security, community cohesion, cost of living pressures, and the character of local culture.
One of the most significant effects has been on employment. As industries globalised, manufacturing and value-adding sectors that once provided stable, well-paid jobs were progressively offshored to lower-cost economies. This hollowing-out of domestic industry weakened regional towns and outer suburbs that relied on factories, ports, and associated trades. In their place, Australia has seen a growth in casualised, short-term, and gig-based work. While flexible, this model has reduced job security and made long-term planning—such as buying a home or raising a family—more difficult for many households. Globalisation has also contributed to rising cost-of-living pressures. Australia’s deep integration into global capital markets has fuelled asset inflation, particularly in housing. International investment, combined with population growth driven by global labour mobility, has placed sustained pressure on housing supply in major cities. For many Australians, home ownership—once a cornerstone of the national lifestyle—has become increasingly unattainable, altering expectations across generations.
Culturally, globalisation has diluted local identity. The dominance of global brands has weakened local businesses and reduced the distinctiveness of Australian communities. Community cohesion has also been strained. Rapid economic and demographic change, driven by global forces, has outpaced the capacity of infrastructure and social institutions to adapt. This has contributed to congestion, service shortages, and a perception among some Australians that decision-making has shifted away from local needs toward global economic priorities. In summary, it has also undermined key elements of the Australian lifestyle: secure work, affordable housing, strong local communities, and a clear sense of national character. Truthful Jones says And he swears that it 100% true: ….No Bulls##t”
Truthful Jones tells us that his uncle Mick from Ireland visited him in Maleny. Uncle Mick took Mum and their son Pat to Brisbane for the first time. Mum had an appointment with a doctor, so the two men went off for a walk along Queen Street. As they passed a building, the door opened automatically. They decided to go in, having to dodge as the doors tried to close before they were properly inside.
“Gosh, Dad, I hope we can get back out again,” said Pat.
While in the auditorium, they watched as a woman, old and wrinkled, hobbled past. She made her way to a marble wall and a section of it mysteriously slid open. The woman stepped in and the wall closed behind her.
Dad and Pat stood watching as a counter above the door climbed from 0 to 20. It paused for a few moments and then counted back down to 0. There was a ‘ding’, the wall opened and a beautiful, spry young woman stepped out, walking brightly out of the building.
Dad stood, looking slackjawed at his son, Pat . Then he twigged!
“Son, go get your mother…! She needs to go into that room and come out just the same as that last lady!”
Moral: You can never put anything past those relatives who visited Truthful from Ireland can you!

Stevie from Maleny Paint plays in the Ashes at Lords
The Ashes cricket series between England and Australia is always eagerly awaited and who could forget the last time Australia played England at Lord’s.
Stevie, the tan dachshund from Maleny Paint Supplies, was known far and wide for two things: his fierce guarding of the paint tinting machine and his uncanny ability to chase off anyone carrying a sausage roll. But one fateful morning, an email arrived addressed to “Stevie – Australian Test Selection.” Brett, the store manager assumed it was spam. Stevie, however, took it as destiny.
Three weeks later, the crowd at Lord’s Cricket Ground went wild as the commentator announced, “And batting at number six for Australia… Stevie the dachshund!”
Dressed in a custom-sized Baggy Green (which looked suspiciously like a lettuce leaf), Stevie strutted out to the pitch, tail wagging like a metronome.
England’s fast bowler snickered as he thundered in. The ball zipped past Stevie, missing him by a whisker. He barked furiously, dug his paws in, and on the next delivery— thwack!—he launched the ball straight over the bowler’s head. Six runs. The crowd erupted.
Stevie’s batting style was unorthodox. He didn’t use the bat much; instead, he preferred to bunt the ball with his snout or occasionally trip over it into a lucky boundary. When he reached fifty runs, he celebrated by rolling on the pitch, leaving a trail of grass stains and dignity behind him.
By the end of the day, Stevie had become a national hero. The commentators declared it “the most entertaining innings since Bradman met a lawnmower.” Back in Maleny, his workmates hung a sign above his kennel: “From Paint Guard to Ashes Legend.”
When asked if he’d return for the next Test, Stevie barked proudly—then promptly chased a cricket ball into the pavilion, knocking over the English tea tray. A true Australian all-rounder.

DYING WITHOUT A WILL: WHAT HAPPENS?

In the last two issues I have been discussing the requirements of a valid Will. I thought it would be a good opportunity to continue the train of thought with what could happen should you die without a valid will. If a person dies without a valid Will, that person is said to have died “intestate”.
Dying without a valid will or ‘intestate’ can be very detrimental to your loved ones and also very expensive. Not only have you given away your ability to decide how your estate is to be distributed and to whom but you also run the risk of the costs of administering your estate increasing drastically and your estate being distributed to unintended beneficiaries.
One example of an unintended beneficiary is an estranged spouse from whom the deceased was not formally divorced. That estranged spouse will share in the deceased’s estate under the Queensland intestacy rules despite the deceased and the estranged spouse not being in a relationship at the time of death.
The Succession Act sets out the rules to be applied in situations of
intestacy. Here are some examples:
• If you are married/de facto with no children, your spouse takes 100%;
• If you are married/de facto with one child your spouse takes the first $150,000.00 plus the household contents. Assets after this are divided equally between the spouse and the child
• If you are married/de facto with two or more children your spouse takes the first $150,000.00 plus the household contents. Assets after this are divided 1/3 for the spouse and 2/3 equally between the children.
In situations where you do not have any close relatives the rules provide that your estate must go to relatives that are further removed from you.
Another problem with dying intestate is the need for court approval for the appointment of someone to administer your estate. In a will you would appoint an executor of your choice.

One of the world’s most spectacular and iconic live events, The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, marched exclusively and for the first time ever into Brisbane, Queensland this February in celebration of its 75th anniversary. Those who attended were not disappointed with the spectacle that they witnessed.
The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is one of the world’s most iconic military and cultural performances, blending precision military display, music, dance, and theatrical pageantry. Held annually on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle in Scotland, the event has grown from modest beginnings into a globally recognised spectacle that attracts audiences from across the world, including strong participation from Australia.
The word “tattoo” originates from a 17th-century Dutch phrase doe den tap toe, meaning “turn off the taps.” It referred to a military drum or bugle signal ordering soldiers to return to their barracks after visiting taverns. Over time, the term evolved to describe military musical performances and ceremonial displays, particularly those involving marching bands and coordinated drills.
Early Development
The modern Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo began in 1950 as part of the Edinburgh International Festival, which itself had been created to promote cultural unity following World War II. The inaugural
Tattoo featured eight items and attracted approximately 6,000 spectators each night. Its venue —the castle esplanade—provided a dramatic and historic backdrop, quickly becoming integral to the event’s identity.

Maleny Cedar Street Kindy receives funding from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund Round 126 of the Community Benefits Fund brought $14,020 to the Maleny Cedar Street Kindy and Community Centre to carry out a gravel upgrade of the car park and the installation of a new power pole and exterior lighting at the Cedar Street Centre, located at 17 Cedar Street, Maleny. This work will enhance safety for parents and their young children as they are dropped off and picked up for kindy and also provide safe, nearby, and shaded parking spaces for kindy staff. These improvements will enhance safety and access to the centre, which is used by a number of local community groups. The Maleny Rotary Club members and volunteers are using the centre as a base for their organising of the 2026 Maleny Wood Expo.
Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club, through their Grants Officer Greg Williams, organised the securing of $14,020 through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund.

The club has a Certified Kitchen/Catering facilities including a stove, pots & pans, dishwasher, crockery and utensils. The Bushman’s Bar is practically fitted out with a large capacity for the cold storage of a range of beverages. The Bushman’s Bar is located at the core of the Witta Recreation Club. Service from the bar can be provided to customers on the covered hard standing overlooking the playing pitches, or directly into the Clubroom.

Sarah’s Cafe Closed
As of February 15th, Sarah of Sarah’s Unplugged, in the middle of Maleny’s Maple Street, has made the difficult decision to permanently close her beloved community café, which has operated for over a decade. The decision was made after what she called a “lease dispute”.
Sarah said she was heartbroken and it was with “heavy, shocked, and honestly speechless hearts” that she came to this decision.
She continued, “We are actively looking at other locations and exploring what might be possible next”.
Sarah’s daughter, Monique, said, “This café is more than a business — it’s a community, a connection, and my mum’s life’s work. Thank you for supporting her, our staff, and a place that has meant so much to so many.”

Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.
You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.
Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.
An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, flood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.
Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.
Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..

Maleny Visitor Information Centre
The Maleny Visitor Information Centre is a not for profit, long-standing, independent community service, run by volunteers. The Centre is a ticket selling agency for Maleny Film Society movie screenings along with a range of quality souvenirs and postcards, with a distinctively Maleny flavour along with information about places and events around the area.
The Centre is situated at 2/23 Maple Street, Maleny. It is open 7 days a week between 9.30am-4.00pm. Closed only on Good Friday and Christmas Day. If you have lost something on your visit to Maleny check with the centre as often items are handed in there. Phone: 07 5499 9033
