A New Kind of Essential
Color brings life to a quilt, but contrast is what makes it sing. The play between light and dark – the depth created by shadow–is a quiet but essential part of beautiful design.
For years, Alison Glass’ Sun Print collections have offered a paintbox of saturated color, an everevolving collection designed to mix, match, and build upon itself. Now, Shadow joins it. This new collection focuses on the neutrals that make color shine – a palette of light and dark, from soft whites and warm creams to deep charcoals and grounding hues. Shadow expands the range of usable fabrics, whether as backgrounds, focal points, or the quiet in-between spaces that let color glow.
Each year, Sun Print and Shadow will release together, creating a growing foundation of color and contrast. Both collections are designed to work seamlessly with past, present, and future Alison Glass fabrics. Together they provide a balance of color and quiet, light and depth.

Rethinking Backgrounds: The Power of Color in Context
When it comes to choosing a background fabric, it’s easy to default to white, cream, gray, or black. And those are great! They’re timeless for a reason. But what if we opened up that idea just a little?
Backgrounds don’t have to be blank spaces. They can be quiet – but they can also be colorful. A color doesn’t have to be neutral in name to act like one in your quilt. It just has to feel neutral within the context of the fabrics around it.
That’s why, with bright collections like Sun Print, a deep teal, muted gold, or dusty plum can be the perfect backdrop. These kinds of colors create contrast, let other elements shine, and give a design room to breathe – without always defaulting to white or gray. They can add richness without distraction. Interest without noise.
That’s the idea behind the ‘colors’ in Shadow.
Shadow 2026 Details
The debut Shadow collection includes six prints, each offered in three neutral color-ways – half light, half dark. The designs are intricate yet versatile, inspired by the way shadows hold both story and dimension:
• Dwell – A quiet countryside landscape in linework, like a scene glimpsed from a train window.
• Equanimity – A delicate, organic floral scattered like wildflowers in an open field.
• Ledger – A nod to vintage bookkeeping, evoking the beauty of the everyday.
• This & That – Geometric and fluid, a study in movement and shape.
• Singalong – A musical print featuring the song “You Are My Sunshine,” layered with soft flowers.
• Philately – A collection of tiny animals and geometric motifs, drawn from a past fabric line inspired by vintage postage stamps.
With Shadow 2026, the range of neutral quilting fabrics expands – not just in color, but in character.
This new collection is designed as a companion to Sun Print – a grounding, versatile series of prints that act as modern neutrals. Shadow 2026 includes eighteen fabrics total: nine lights and nine darks. Within the group, you’ll find six white and cream-based prints, six in black and gray, and six that introduce a subtle range of color – three lights and three darks – designed to function like neutrals while adding a bit more depth and warmth.
These six “color” neutrals are especially useful with saturated palettes like Sun Print. They create that same calm contrast we love in traditional neutrals – just with a little more personality. If you’ve ever felt unsure about your background choice – or if you’ve wanted to try something with a bit more character – Shadow is a great place to start.
