Poseidon Pitches In PARADE CREW HELPING LOCAL BIZ – AND YOU CAN WIN $500

As the snow keeps falling, it’s important to remind ourselves that summer does exist, will come, and is right around the corner. Members of the Rockaway Mermaid Brigade do not require such a reminder, as they are incessantly in a state of meticulous preparation for the much-anticipated Rockaway summer. While the air is still bustling with uncertainty, uneasiness and the frost of February, the Brigade has its sails set for calmer seas, and a return to the type of abnormality that defines this beach community. Under “normal” times, the Brigade would be preparing its yearly invasion of the Knights of Columbus for, what would be, the fifth annual Poseidon’s Prom. They would be preparing to crown a king and queen. They would be purchasing glitter and aquatic decorations, and they would be begging Florida’s newest real estate tycoon, DJ Paddy Tubz, to fly up north to light up the dance floor. However, these times are anything but normal, and as Hunter S. Thompson aptly stated, “When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.” As expected, Rockaway’s favorite weirdos are prepared to go pro. This year, instead of harassing all of the small businesses in the neighborhood for donations for the prom raffle, the Brigade has decided to pay homage to all of the small businesses that have helped get The Poseidon’s Parade off the ground each year. The Brigade is proud to announce that they

are raffling off a cash prize to a lucky local business supporter. The plan is simple. You can earn raffle tickets by supporting local businesses. On March 19, the Brigade’s favorite internet sensation, and running prom queen, “TheGingerLadd” will draw a winner on her weekly podcast, and one lucky mer-person will win $500 provided by Poseidon’s Parade Inc. Each week, a member of the Brigade will write an article about one of the businesses in the raffle, so keep checking The Rockaway Times to get in on the action! The raffle tickets were designed by former Rockaway artist, Marybef Rivera. “I just wanted to give back to the Rockaway community that I left behind so many years ago,” she stated from her perch in the snowy hills of Staten Island. Rockaway Staple, Rogoff ’s, Set to Close By Katie McFadden

It’s the end of an era. Beloved card and gift store, Rogoff ’s, is set to close this month. The orange and green price tags with the Rogoff ’s name on their products will soon be the only remnants that people will have to remember the store that has served the community for more than 80 years. What remains on shelves is marked 50% off as the owner tries to liquidate. Rogoff ’s, located at 212 Beach 116th Street, is set to close by the middle of the month, according to owner, Peter Patel. Rogoff ’s has been a longtime staple in Rockaway. Archives, the former store awning and a 2013 obituary for one of the former owners, Jerry Rogoff, say the brand started in 1937. However, daughter of the original owner, Sam Rogoff, says he first opened a store called Admiration on Beach 116th Street in 1938, before selling it in 1945 to start his Rogoff ’s toy store. Old photos provided by historian James Supple show the original Rogoff ’s once stood where Last Stop is now located. It is not clear when the store made the move to its current location. In 1963, the family also opened a second Rogoff ’s nearby on Rockaway Beach Boulevard that predominantly sold bicycles and outdoor furniture. The toy store was a go-to for kids and families, many of whom went there to buy kits to make model cars and planes. In 1993, the Rogoff family sold the store. It is not clear who owned it after, but current owner, Peter Patel says his family bought the store in 1998 and they’ve been operating it since, as a one-stop shop for toys, cards, novelties, school and beach supplies and more on Beach 116th Street. After owning the business for roughly 23 years, Patel says, “it was good when the business was good.” However, it wasn’t always easy doing business in Rockaway. Patel faced a number of obstacles since purchasing the

store. Just a year in, he faced a battle with the city, which wanted to remove the Q22 bus stop around the corner from his store in 1999. Business was steady until Hurricane Sandy set things on a downward path. With more than $200,000 in flood damage, especially to stock in the basement, and the store facing a minor ceiling fire just months later in February 2013, Patel struggled with the decision to reopen, but ultimately decided on taking a chance. Once reopened, Rogoff ’s dealt with the constant issue of aggressive panhandling on the block, which kept some customers away. Some customers turned to other outlets such as large online retailers like Amazon for their needs. Then the coronavirus pandemic became a struggle that the store has been unable to overcome. “There is no business,” Patel told The Rockaway Times. “People shop online or go to bigger stores and this pandemic is killing everything. There’s been no business for the past 12 months,” he said. Part of that struggle included having to close the store completely during lockdown from March to May 2020. Longtime store assistant MaryAnn Lester reiterated that struggle. “It’s been going downhill. People don’t come out the way they did. They shop online. With Sandy, it took too long for us to come back and then people found other places to go,” Lester said. Patel considered selling the business before closing, but

ultimately realized it wasn’t an option. “Nobody is interested in going into this kind of business anymore,” he said. “I feel bad about closing, but I have to do it because I can’t continue losing money.” Lester, who has worked at the store since Patel took over, says Rogoff ’s will truly be missed. “We’ve always had what people needed. People are going to realize what they’re really missing when

we close, with school supplies and all that. But we haven’t been getting the business. It’s a shame when you have the buses, the trains and all of that stuff here, it shouldn’t be like this. It should be booming,” she said. Adding that in addition to people missing the store, she will miss the customers. “I’m really going to miss the people,” she said. Rogoff ’s is expected to close sometime next week.

Adopt a Bear for a Good Cause By Katie McFadden

Love is in the bear! The Little North Pole may be the king of Christmas decorations in Rockaway, but this time, they’re doing a little something to share the love for Valentine’s Day. On Sunday, February 14, they’ll be hosting an adopt a bear driveby event, in which kids can take home a love-stuffed plush in an effort to give back to those in need. All are welcome to drive by the home of the Little North Pole at 144-03 Neponsit Avenue on Sunday, between 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., for a chance to take home a Valentine’s bear that was born right at the Little North Pole. For a donation of $10 and some non-perishable food items, kids, or whoever wants one, can get a bear. Each bear comes with its own name and birth certificate. Joe Mure and Jodi Tucci are hoping the bears will “make some children smile,” while the donations will

be used to help stock the St. Camillus food pantry. “We’re looking to help out the food pantry that is feeding some of the people in Rockaway who are struggling to feed themselves,” Mure said. “On one hand, we hope to put a smile on a child’s face, while at the same time, help people who are having a difficult time and we hope to make them smile also.” As with some regular adoptions, these bear cubs come a little bit older. They were born at the Little North Pole in 2019—a year when things seemed much simpler. “We don’t want to really give kids memories of 2020 because there’s a lot that went wrong. 2020 was not a good year for people, so our bears were born in 2019 and they’re ready for adoption! It’s like with a regular adoption, not everyone gets a newborn,”

Mure joked. While Mure decks his home out for the holidays, just a few hearts will decorate the windows this weekend. After all, it’s all about the bears and collecting donations for a good cause. However, the event won’t be hard to miss as a tent will be outside, decorated with balloons as the “cupid squad” will be on hand to hand out the bears to their new owners on Sunday. “We’re trying to make it as festive as we can without the lights,” Mure said. Mure decided to give the donations to St. Camillus’ food pantry after asking around for

who needs help. “I spoke with Rockaway WISH to see if they knew of any pantries and they said Father Rich at St. Camillus gives out food every Wednesday and they could use the help, so we figured we’d help them,” Mure said. “Father Rich loved the idea.” Cars can start lining up before 2 p.m. at Beach 145th and Neponsit Avenue, heading down towards the home. Covid safety practices will be in effect, so all of those who come to the drive-by are asked to wear a mask, even when in their cars, to keep themselves and others safe.

A couple of sculptures called “The Family” have been there since 1974. The artist who created the pieces, Constantio Nivola, was an Italian immigrant who died in 1988. There are some calling for the protection of the work since many have graffiti or showing wear and tear. ***** We’re sad to pass on the news that Frank Abbracciamento died January 28. A Brooklyn native and longtime Belle Harbor resident, the lifetime restauranteur

designed, built and operated the famed Abbracciamento on the Canarsie Pier. He never got the business out of his blood as he started a new place in Lynbrook just last year. Frank was 77 and his survived by his wife Aniko of Far Rockaway and other family including his mother, Frances, who is 107 and still lives in Breezy Point. ***** Councilman Eric Ulrich announced some news regarding the old Neponsit Nursing Home. As The Rockaway Times was going to press we learned City Councilman Eric Ulrich posted this notice online: “I received the following information from the Mayor’s Office regarding the former Neponsit Nursing Home located at 149-25 Rockaway

Beach Blvd.: As you may know healthcare services ceased at this location in 1997, and it is costly for NYC Health and Hospitals to maintain. The Department of Buildings has deemed the structure unsafe, and NYC Office of Management and Budget has funded the demolition in the January Plan for $5M and H+H would like to start construction next fiscal year after completing design. NYC Parks is prepared to take on management of the Neponsit site after demolition. A public hearing and board approval will be required.” Recent storms have taken their toll as well on the long-neglected structure. Covid-19 Tracker 02/01 - 02/07 As parts of Rockaway have seen increases in Covid-19 cases, it’s important to keep track of how the neighborhood is doing with coronavirus. Robby Schwach of Councilman Eric Ulrich’s office has been hard at work, tracking down the details for each Rockaway zip code. We are sharing this info each week. Schwach noted that since New Year’s Day, 2,555 residents of Rockaway and Broad Channel have tested positive for COVID-19. Since March of 2020, 626 residents of Rockaway and Broad Channel have died of COVID-19. The latest info represents changes between 02/01/202102/07/2021. In 11691, positive cases increased by 188 from 5,371 to 5,559. There were six new deaths in this period, bringing the total number of deaths to 401.

In 11692, cases went up by 51, from 1,307 to 1,358. There were no new deaths in this period, and the total remains at 96. In 11693, cases rose by 27 from 782 to 809. There were no new deaths, and the total remains at 31. In 11694, there was an increase in cases by 36, from 1,675 to 1,711. There were no new deaths and the total remains at 91. Longtime Local Lands Role In 'Judas and the Black Messiah' By Katie McFadden

At a time when civil rights have again become a prominent issue in society and as we celebrate Black History Month, a new film, “Judas and the Black Messiah” serves to tell the story of such issues surrounding a historic event and figure in Illinois. The highly anticipated film is set to hit theaters and HBO Max on Friday, February 12 and Nicholas Velez, a longtime Rockaway local with a supporting role in the film, is about to make personal history with his first big screen debut. “Judas and the Black Messiah” tells the story of the rise of charismatic 1960s civil rights leader, Fred Hampton, the Chairman of the Illinois Black Panther Party, and how FBI informant Bill O’Neal, who appears to bond with Hampton, ultimately betrays him. The film, a Warner Bros. production directed by Shaka King, stars Daniel Kaluuya as Hampton and Lakeith Stanford as O’Neal, but locals may recognize longtime Rockaway resident Nicholas Velez in his supporting role as Jose "Cha Cha" Jimenez. For Velez, who grew up in Arverne and Far Rockaway and attended St. Camillus Catholic Academy, acting runs in the family. His father, Community Board 14 member, Jose Velez, has made several appearances on the stage of the Rockaway Theatre Company. Nicholas Velez had gone to Penn State to study economics and enter the business world, but after graduating, he found himself wanting to try something different—acting. “I always went to watch my dad at the community theater and his sister, my aunt, is an actress that has been in a good number of tv shows and films, and I felt like I had the support behind me, so it was something I knew I could give a try,” he said. Velez joined a program at The Acting Studio in Manhattan to study the art and as his talent grew, so did his opportunities. After ac-

thing he knew, Velez was flown out to Cleveland to shoot the film for a few weeks at the end of 2019. Velez had landed the role of Jose "Cha Cha" Jimenez. was playing two days before Velez filmed his major scene. “There’s this pivotal moment in the movie where I give a big speech and it’s centered around police brutality and something that happens to one of the members of my party. I knew it was my big moment to shine, so I had been preparing for it for a while,” he said. Velez hopes that his execution of that speech on the big screen, in a film that already has award-worthy buzz, will land him more roles. “It’s definitely the biggest thing I’ve done so far and hopefully it leads to more opportunities for me in my career,” Velez said. Velez is so committed to acting that in January 2020, he made the move from New York to Los Angeles. However, he hasn’t forgotten about his roots. Over the holidays, Velez returned to New York to visit his family and even gave them a sneak preview of “Judas and the Black Messiah” in full. “I got an advanced screener and I got to watch it with mom and dad three weeks ago,” Velez said. “I was excited to watch it with my parents because I have a lot of support from them. They’ve been a huge part of my success and are always rooting for me to do well, so it was a huge moment to watch it for the first time with them. My dad was really happy to see it, but the movie left my mom stunned. It is really tragic at the end and it really moved her and it made me proud to be a part of the movie even more. I’m looking forward to more people seeing it,” he said. “Judas and the Black Messiah” drops on home screens through HBO Max and in theaters, where theaters are open, on Friday, February 12. As most theaters remain closed in New York and Los Angeles due to coronavirus, Velez says most will see it on HBO Max, including himself. He plans to have a watch party with friends in Los Angeles on Friday. “I’m really excited to see what people think,” Velez said.

When a piece of ice blocked the mechanism, he reached in to clear it. The blades cut off the tops of his middle and index fingers. Surgery to restore his severed fingers is tedious and not always successful. Pins and screws have been inserted in the fingers. White, who works as a contractor with Miracle Movers RBNY, does not have health insurance, unemployment insurance, disability insurance and is not covered by worker's compensation. He and his wife are expecting the birth of their first child, a daughter, in March. This happy time is turning into

Community Board February Meeting Wrap Up By Dan Guarino

Community Board 14 met via Zoom on Tuesday, February 9, with 85 attending. District Manager Jonathan Gaska reported a letter has been sent to Senator Chuck Schumer requesting funding and immediate assistance by this spring for Rockaway’s severely storm-ravaged beaches. It points out they are “not only local beaches, but service the whole city.” Gaska announced the Army Corps of Engineers will attend next month’s meeting with “updates on an important issue. I can’t tell you what it is yet. But it is good news.” Chairperson Dolores Orr praised the Department of Sanitation’s “incredible job” with recent heavy snowstorms. Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato reported on ongoing deliberations regarding Governor Cuomo’s proposed New York State budget. “There are massive cuts, especially to education,” she said. But they are going over each item carefully, sending back recommendations until an acceptable final budget is reached. Sending her own letter regarding beach erosion to Schumer, she stated “it looks good for federal funding.” Amato, along with Safe Horizon and the Shalom Task Force will hold online discussion on Thursday, February 18 6-7:30 p.m. in recognition of Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. “We want to make sure our teens are aware and are in a healthy environment,” she said. She will also host the NYC Department of Finance seminar to help residents with their Notice of Property Value statement, and online CPR in early March. Regarding reported difficulties with scheduling COVID-19 vaccine shots, she noted no immediate fix is available, but constituents, especially seniors, can call her office at 718-945-9550 for assistance. Ciara Donley from Councilman Eric Ulrich’s staff reported free, no-appointment COVID testing is available Mondays and Tuesdays, except for February 15, 9:30- 4 p.m., throughout the month at their offices at 114-12 Beach Channel Drive.

Assemblymember Khaleel Anderson announced proposed legislation to reduce NYCHA rents accordingly due to utility outages and to have healthcare agencies test their staff for COVID. He also voted to pass bills for up to eight paid hours for all workers to get the vaccine, and to extend enhanced death benefits for families of municipal workers who have passed on from the pandemic. Guest speaker Rachel Amar from the NYC Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings explained OATH is the “city agency you go to contest a summons issued by any city department” other than for traffic or parking violations. A large percentage are issued by the Department of Sanitation, and thousands go into default because “people don’t know what to do with them.” “A default judgement can result in a negative impact of your credit score,” even while many are struggling financially due to the pandemic. If no candidate receives more than 50% of firstchoice votes, counting will continue until those with the lowest vote tallies are eliminated. “You still have a chance to weigh in even if your first-choice candidate is counted out,” Suarez said. Early voting runs from February 13 to 21, with election day on February 23. The hospital has also been designated to provide the vaccine solely for health caseworkers/first responders throughout the entire peninsula. The co-chairs will work with Director Gaska to work out the logistics and help get information out to the community. Under Old/New Business, the Board agreed to join Scholars Academy’s student government and School Leadership Team to support keeping in place Sibling Priority polices even though the city has shifted to a school admissions lottery system. They agreed also to oppose National Park Service’s proposal to move the Rockaway Little League from Fort Tilden to fields in Breezy Point’s beach club areas. Among other issues, they cited the lack of public transportation would cut off participation for many families. Gaska reported DOT, which is doing a study of traffic safety issues for Seagirt Boulevard’s entirety from Nassau County’s borderline to Rockaway Freeway, will present at March’s meeting. Finally, Chairperson Orr asked all to support the local restaurants, which re-open this Friday with 25% indoor capacity, and wished all a happy Valentine and Presidents Days.

The Almeda Club, located on 69-62 Almeda Avenue, “is what happens when two Rockaway natives create and curate a space to expand upon their pastime interests.” However, The Club is even more than that. It’s a surf club, a barbershop, a retail space and a conduit of ceaseless generosity used to give back to the community (and beyond). More on that shortly. Upon entering, you instantly feel at home. It is a guarantee that you will be warmly welcomed by Graham Hill and Joe Falcone, the owners of The Almeda Club. In addition, the space is exceptionally comfortable with their custom hand-carved pieces of furniture that could be in an art museum. You will find yourself observing the architecture of the space from front to back, top to bottom. Each detail was meticulously crafted by hand “to create a comfortable environment for residents and visitors of Rockaway Beach alike,” the owners say. The awe doesn’t end within the confines of these four walls, which was transformed from the home of a former deli. There is also a courtyard in the rear where one will find a serene sauna, which was custom built by Hill and Falcone. If you are lucky enough, you may also find Blaine just outside of the yard. Blaine Campbell is the owner and head chef of CC Jerkbox. On any given day you may find him preparing some of the best jerk cuisine in the tri-state area. “He is a part of the team,” Hill says. “We met Blaine during the renovation. He came over with his tools and offered to help us build out the Club. Months went by as we worked shoulder to shoulder every day to get ready for our opening. We were so thankful for his guidance and help and we were looking for the best way to say thank you. We reached out to our good friend, Whitney, of Whit’s End, and asked him if he was using his trailer. We

Outside of the storefront, The Almeda Club hosts one of the many community refrigerators in and around New York City which provides free food and drink to whoever, whenever. This fridge is made possible with help from Rockaway Mutual Aid. “When we first heard about the project, we were excited to be involved. The community refrigerator is the ideal first impression of our Club for a newcomer. We feel that out of all of our services, hosting the refrigerator best represents our intentions as a business.” The two have also been known to organize and host meal distribution events as well, helping to provide hot meals to those in need. Along with helping others, The Almeda Club is a hub for useful services. As part surf shop, they offer storage space for your surfing equipment, they provide lockers for multiple boards and room to hang wetsuits. Outdoor showers are also available. The homemade sauna is even available for their members to warm up and sweat it out before or after a surf session. All for a monthly fee. Looking for a fresh cut? The Almeda Club doubles as a barbershop, offering haircuts by appointment, in authentic barbershop chairs. In addition to the services they provide, the Club also offers their own line of quality goods, from surfboards to clothing. THE POWER OF LOVE The most amazing thing about life is love. In all of its forms, shapes, intensities and colors. The symbol of love is the heart shape and contained within this is compassion, gratitude, generosity and forgiveness. Compassion: acting in genuine concern for others, Gratitude: acknowledging blessings, showing appreciation and kindness. Generosity: giving on a grand scale in a quiet way. Forgiveness: freeing oneself of dissatisfactions and resentments and shifting to overcome

These are tall orders but in my experience definitely able to bring about. Having the intention to be compassionate, to be grateful, to be generous and to be forgiving, is a first step. The energy required to see the light and to make subtle changes just follows. The big realization is the intention towards love. “I want to be compassionate. I want to feel and know what it is to be compassionate and do so on a daily basis all the days of my life.” Once that intention is heart-felt, I can guarantee

that it will manifest at some point in time. Remembering that things don’t happen in the time we want or think they should happen! These powers of love and intentions of love are so strong and can change negativities in a big way. There just must be focused attention and intention from the heart. In the face of adversity, place the attention in an intention for love, peace and joy. Imagine the outcome. We cannot ignore that there are issues that come up with those close in our lives that may seem to compromise the presence of love; these are temporary if we know with our hearts that the attention and intention will prevail. The mind can also help with this process of living in a loving heart with a little shift of attitude. Thinking hard on shifting negatives to positives, however far-fetched it may seem, and then giving some time and space to let the inner workings shift and change. The key for me personally here is to give some time and space rather than keeping the thoughts on

Page 27 what is wrong. Having an intention in the mind to make a shift and then letting it go for a bit focusing on other things and letting the shift happen seemingly on its own. The inner workings at work. The attention and intention in the heart space and the focus on mind positivity unite together in the body to be the ground from which love can grow. The power of love - compassion, gratitude, generosity and forgiveness - is a force of vigor and strength that can overcome any adversity, suffering or sorrow. It is within each of us and connecting to others from that powerful place will bring joy into your life. Find the way to compassion and ease with a smile to the love within your heart. Celebrate all the love in your life! May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace. Estate Planning Answers By Nancy J. Brady

Last month in this column we reviewed the process by which a New Yorker’s estate passes when there is no will in place. In this article, we will discuss the benefits of having a last will and testament in place. A last will and testament, when properly completed and supervised by an attorney, can meet many estate planning goals that cannot be met if there is no will in place. Some advantages to having a will include the ability to change the estate plan since the rules of intestacy will not apply; creating a will with an attorney is relatively easy, customizable, and can be changed; and a last will and testament can be drafted to make provisions for minor children or disabled loved ones who either could not, or should not inherit outright. As you may recall from the last column, in New York, the

intestacy statute provides who will inherit a decedent’s property (if no beneficiary or joint owner is named on said property). Often, people wish their estate to pass differently than the intestacy statute delineates. For example, a married person often wants a surviving spouse to inherit the full value of an asset titled in the decedent spouse’s name alone. Without a will in place, the intestacy statute provides for the surviving spouse to inherit the first $50,000.00 and half of the remaining value of an asset, and children to divide the other half. A will can be drafted to change this unwanted outcome, leaving the full value of the asset to a surviving spouse. Additionally, by completing and executing a will a testator can partially or fully disinherit persons as well. People often have reasons to leave a child of theirs out of the will, for example if that child is estranged

or has a substance abuse issue. Alternatively, one’s child may not wish to inherit for the child’s own estate planning reasons, particularly if they have large estates and their own estate plan in place. If a decedent leaves a disabled child behind any government benefits received by the disabled child could be jeopardized if there were no will, and the disabled child inherits via the intestacy statute. A properly drafted will could include provisions for disabled individuals by including certain testamentary trust clauses, leaving government benefits intact for the disabled child. A valid last will and testament can include persons who are not blood relatives, and/or charities if that is an important part of one’s estate plan. Often clients have a beloved niece, nephew or friend they would like included. Sometimes a person may

wish to include a bequest to a charity, which can be accommodated in a last will and testament. Keep in mind, however, when a person dies with an asset titled in her name alone, with or without a will, surrogate’s court involvement will be necessary. For those estates in which the person died without a will, a process called “estate administration” will be needed before the assets can be distributed. For estates in which there is a valid will, the process is called “probate.” Both processes involve the filing of certain documents with the surrogate’s court in the county in which the decedent resided. GERD is The Word Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is defined by its cardinal symptoms (recurrent and troublesome heartburn and regurgitation) or by its specific complications (esophagitis, peptic strictures [scarring and blockage of the esophagus], and Barrett esophagus). GERD is caused by stomach contents, which include very potent acids and digestive enzymes, reaching the esophagus. The stomach has a mucosal barrier that prevents its contents from digesting the stomach itself, but the esophagus does not have such a barrier. In GERD, gastric juices can

reach as high as the pharynx, mouth, larynx, and airways, causing symptoms such as hoarseness, wheezing, cough, and asthma. The prevalence of GERD is increasing, with greater rates in high-income countries where up to 25% of the population may be affected. GERD can result in diminished health-related quality of life, and its prevalence can consume substantial healthcare resources and result in high costs to society. Risk factors for GERD include obesity, smoking, and a genetic predisposition. Conversely, infection with the gastric bacterium Helicobacter pylori,

GERD involves dysfunction at the esophagogastric junction barrier, including loss of effective lower esophageal sphincter function, which allows acidic stomach contents to reach into the esophagus. The lower esophageal sphincter is a ring of muscle, similar to the rectal sphincter, located where the esophagus meets the stomach at the diaphragm. A properly functioning sphincter keeps stomach contents out of the esophagus. Transient sphincter relaxation is normal, for example to allow belching, but prolonged relaxation can contribute to GERD. A frequent contributor to GERD is a sliding hiatal hernia, where part of the stomach herniates upward through the diaphragm and into the chest cavity. This prevents the eso-

The Rockaway Times phageal sphincter from functioning properly. The usual symptoms of GERD are heartburn and acid regurgitation. Chest pain is also a common symptom. Less common symptoms include dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), bleeding, chronic cough, asthma, chronic laryngitis, hoarseness, teeth erosions (from acid), belching, and bloating. Persons with these symptoms plus progressive dysphagia, involuntary weight loss, or bleeding should be immediately referred to a gastroenterologist for endoscopy as these symptoms may represent the development of malignancy. Those with untreated GERD may develop Barrett esophagus, a pre-malignant condition where the cells that line the esophagus, due to chronic acid exposure, undergo a cellular change. As a last resort in treatment-resistant GERD, a surgical procedure called fundoplication may be warranted. 1000th Person Tested for COVID-19 at Ulrich’s Office

When the Mullally family came in to take advantage of the free COVID-19 testing at NYC Council Member Eric Ulrich’s Rockaway office on Thursday, February 4, they had no idea that they would be part of a celebration. Thursday testing was done as a makeup day for testing that was cancelled earlier in the week due to the snowstorm. The Mullallys were some of many who took advantage of the free testing opportunity and left with a little something more fun than results. The family was presented with a gift bag of snacks, candy, personal protective equipment, and a bottle of wine to commemorate that they were the 998th, 999th and 1,000th persons to be tested at Ulrich’s office. Ulrich has worked with the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation’s Test and Trace Corps to offer regularly scheduled free testing for COVID-19 since early December. Residents can visit the office where they can use a self-swab kit to be sent to a laboratory for molecular PCR testing to check for the presence of the virus. Results of the test are emailed to the client within two days. “It’s a great service. The staff are patient and informative, and the entire process is very

efficient,” Christine Mullally said. “We’re happy to be able to bring this important service to our constituents,” Council Member Ulrich said. “The Test and Trace Microsite program has been very well-received and we greatly appreciate HHC’s commitment to make testing safe and easy for people that come to our office.” “Testing is a crucial tool in our ongoing fight against COVID-19, and strong partnerships in the community make it possible to reach New Yorkers where the need is greatest,” NYC Test & Trace Corps Executive Director Dr. Ted Long said. “We thank the office of Councilmember Ulrich for helping us expand convenient testing options at no cost on the Rockaway Peninsula through the mobile self-testing program.” Ulrich has secured Test and Trace teams for Mondays and Tuesdays from 9:30 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. throughout the month of February (except Monday 2/15) to ensure that people can get tested regularly. From NPS: Who Dat? Owls All Over New York City's owls have gotten a lot of press in the last few months. From Rocky, the Northern Saw-whet Owl of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, to the electrifying Snowy Owl gracing Central Park, to the stalwart sightings of Great Horned and Barred Owls, it seems people of all stripes, and not just "birdwatchers" are fascinated by the presence of the birds of power and prestige populating Gotham City. And if you're in touch with the nature of New York, you know that owls are here, and always have been. In fact, it would not be considered impossible to spot up to eight different species of owls within the five boroughs in any given year. But if you're sitting there scratching your head, and thinking, "I've lived in this city my whole life, and I've never seen a single one," you are not alone. In fact, it's a safe guess that many New Yorkers are completely unaware that they are sharing the streets with a

parliament of owls. And it is perhaps this reason that the aforementioned celebrities are being seen as such; owls, just sitting there, in the middle of busy, heavily trafficked, tourist-friendly hotspots. And that's fair. While they've always been around, it's not exactly every day that you run into one. For one thing, most owls are nocturnal. We have to be willing to search for them, most times. Dawn and dusk are good for scouting their whereabouts, as they are either ending or beginning their "workday" during this time, and our eyes don't need too much adjusting. This shouldn't be too hard of a sell for the dedicated, after all this is the city that never sleeps. Secondly, owls are predators, and they are banking on not being seen, or heard, in order to sneak up on prey. They are excellent at blending in, from mottled coloration that mimics leaves, bark, or snow for example, to nearly silent flight

capabilities due to fancy feathers. So, unless you rouse one from a tree (the term is called flushing) or hear one calling at night, they may be there without you realizing. And lastly, you have to be in the right place at the right time. In New York, the right place is probably a park, and Gateway is no exception. In the past few years, we've had sightings of saw-whets, great-horns, longears, barns and snowies. And the right time for us, is the winter. While some owls are residents and live in the city full-time, others are migratory

and are only around in the winter months. And in addition to the greater numbers of owls present in winter, the lack of leaves on the trees make for easier spotting. This February, possibly the height of owl-seeing in NYC, consider Gateway in your plans. The Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, Ft. Tilden, Floyd Bennett Field, and Sandy Hook have been reliable sources of owl observation. If you do get to share space with one, be considerate. Owls may be nesting and are likely to abandon a nest if they feel threatened. Don't approach an owl, or any wildlife for that matter, but rather stop, watch, and practice using those binoculars to get a "closer" experience. Your actions have reactions, and if you want to see an owl, you'll need to help to make them feel at home. Happy owling!
