Irish Eyes Are Crying ROCKAWAY ST. PAT’S AXED By Katie McFadden
It’s official. The highlight that ends each winter, the Rockaway St. Patrick’s Day Parade, is cancelled. Earlier this week, The Rockaway Times had contacted parade organizer Michael Benn regarding any changes to the parade, which was scheduled to take place just five weeks away on March 6, but we did not receive a response by press time. However, a message on the website for the Queens County St. Patrick’s Day Parade revealed the sad news. The website reads, “Our 46th Annual Parade will be held March 2022. Covid-19, All 2021 Permits Cancelled.” Instead, this year’s parade will simply feature an online compilation of prior parade highlights to “continue our tradition and keep in mind the safety of all our marchers and community during these trying times,” the website says. The 46th Annual Queens County St. Patrick’s Day Parade is officially scheduled for March 5, 2022. The Rockaway Times broke the news of the cancellation on social media. The news reflected coming full circle as the coronavirus continues to wreak havoc almost a year later. Last year’s 45th Annual Rockaway St. Patrick’s Day Parade marked the last occasion where the community came together and celebrated before New York City announced a full lockdown about a week later with school and business closures. It was also the last St. Patrick’s Day parade for the season as the New York City parade on March
17 was cancelled. However, the date of last year’s parade, March 7, also coincided with the first patient in Queens diagnosed with coronavirus being admitted to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, showing that the virus had announced its presence on the peninsula. The news of this year’s parade being cancelled was met with mixed reaction on social media. While some responded that this is the right call given the circumstances, many were disappointed to hear the news and others called it “ridiculous” given that the parade is held outdoors. Some even discussed staging a “protest” and unofficial plans to keep the parade tradition alive are already being discussed among locals. A note on the official parade website hinted against taking the risk. “Thank you for supporting us in our parade. Please be extra careful with this tremendous Coronavirus. Don’t take any chances. Use all necessary caution and care.” This news comes as the status of local restaurants and bars, that would normally be packed on parade day, still remains unknown. While Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced he would ease some lockdown restrictions across the state, as we go to press, plans to ease the ban on indoor dining in New York City bars and restaurants have not been announced. In addition to the parade, all parade fundraising events, including the installation ball at Antuns, are also cancelled. However, donations can still be made to support next year’s parade. The Jetty Master Plan By Katie McFadden
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and its contractor H&L Contracting LLC, are hard at work building the groins (jetties) to reduce erosion and the coastal storm risk along the beach. Here’s a quick rundown of the work taking place and what’s to come. As part of this $113.9M project, Rockaway is getting 14 new groins, while five others are being refurbished. Since the fall, construction crews have been working on the groins at Beach 32nd Street and Beach 36th Street. These groins will be completed in early March and all work in the area will be shut down to avoid endangered birds. According to Senior Project Manager Dan Falt, in mid- February, crews will begin setting up beach access at Beach 142nd Street and will begin working in March on the groins at Beach 149th and Beach 145th Streets. This work will take about four
months, and when compete, they will begin work on the groins at Beach 140th and Beach 135th Streets. When those are
complete in the fall, they will move the crews to begin work on the groins located at Beach 92nd Street and Beach 98th Street. Following that, in rough order, groins will also be constructed at Beach 125th and Beach 130th, Beach 40th and 42nd, Beach 107th and 103rd, Beach 120th and 115th, Beach 52nd, 46th and 110th. When construction occurs, surrounding beaches are closed in about 500-600 foot sections. This whole project falls under Contract 1 and is expect-
ed to be complete by Summer 2024. Contracts for additional coastal protection measures will soon go out for bid. Contract 2 will consist of a reinforced dune construction, and pedestrian beach crossovers made of timber structures for beach access spanning the new dunes for access from the boardwalk to the beach. USACE hopes to award the contract for this project by the end of the year. More sand placement will occur in Contract 3, as well as Jamaica Bay side improvements which are currently in the design phase. USACE planned to award this contract for sand replenishment by the end of this year, but they are trying to accelerate this process. Because of the complexity of the Jamaica Bay side improvement work, and the related drainage structures, that work will take longer to finalize, and construction is intended to begin in late 2023. It’s always nice to see good news! ***** And speaking of dogs, here’s another reason to love them: they are helping in the fight against Covid. It was just announced that covid-sniffing dogs will be utilized at Miami Heat basketball games. According to CBS-Miami, fans arriving for the game will be brought to a screening area and the detection dogs will walk past. If the dog keeps going, the fan is cleared; if the dog sits, that’s a sign it detects the virus, and the fan will be denied entry. A German study last year found that dogs there were right 94% of the time when it came to coronavirus detection.

Covid-19 Tracker 01/18-01/26 As parts of Rockaway have seen increases in Covid-19 cases, it’s important to keep track of how the neighborhood is doing with coronavirus. Robby Schwach of Councilman Eric Ulrich’s office has been hard at work, tracking down the details for each Rockaway zip code. We are sharing this info each week. Schwach noted that since New Year's Day, 1,871 residents of Rockaway and Broad Channel have tested positive for COVID-19 and 17 have died. Since March of 2020, 616 residents of Rockaway and Broad Channel have died of COVID-19. The latest info represents changes between 01/18/202101/26/2021. In 11691, positive cases increased by 283 from 4,902 to 5,185. There were two new deaths in this period, bringing the total number of deaths to 393.
In 11692, cases went up by 95, from 1,146 to 1,241. There were no new deaths in this period, and the total remains at 95. In 11693, cases rose by 65 from 676 to 741. There were no new deaths, and the total remains at 31. In 11694, there was an increase in cases by 90, from 1,517 to 1,607. There was one new death, bringing the total to 90. In 11697, cases rose by 18, from 401 to 419. There were no new deaths in this period, and the total remains at seven. The seven-day rolling average of positive tests by zip code: As of January 23, 11691 is 9.96%, 11692 is 7.37%, 11693 is 10.7%, 11694 is 8.51%, 11697 is 6.73% Please remember to wear a mask, particularly indoors and where social distancing is not possible.

The themes of each book selection coincide with RISE’s mission and include topics such as Envi-
ronmental Conservation, Social Equity, Rockaway History, Sustainability and Urban Planning. A water main break in Broad Channel on Sunday, January 24 caused disruptions to water service throughout the island and the Rockaway peninsula. At around 7 a.m. on Sunday, a water main broke near Cross Bay Boulevard and East 1st Road in Broad Channel. The NYC Department of Environmental Protection, the Department of Transportation and the NYPD responded. Due to flooding conditions and damage to the pavement, traffic was immediately closed in both directions and was eventually reopened after the area was cleared. However, the water main rupture caused problems beyond just Broad Channel as residents across Broad Channel and the Rockaway peninsula experienced brown water in their sinks and showers. Following the water main break, the water system in the area was discolored due to rust disturbance. The DEP received several calls regarding this issue. “Anytime there is a disruption to the way the water typically flows through the distribution (such as a water main break or use of a fire hydrant) it can result in discolored water – and we got numerous reports of discolored water across the peninsula during Sunday afternoon/evening,” a spokesman for the DEP said. While the DEP says by Monday there were few calls of water discoloration, there were still reports from neighbors on local social media pages as of Tuesday, January 26. In response to water discoloration, the DEP said, “Though it is not harmful, residents should not drink obviously discolored water. They can run their taps until the water runs cool and clear.” If this doesn’t help, people should call 311 to report the issue. The DEP also took action to address the issue. On the

morning of Monday, January 25, emergency contractors reported to the scene of the water main break to begin repairs. This repair work is ongoing. On the evening of Sunday, January 24, they also began to open fire hydrants around the area to help flush out the system. While this helped alleviate the water discoloration, as temperatures dropped, this resulted in some icy conditions on streets and sidewalks, making Monday morning’s commute a bit slippery around Rockaway and Broad Channel. The DEP noted that all residents should have functioning water service at this time. They did not say what may have caused the water main break.

Please Pick Up! Dear Editor: I have recently moved back to Rockaway and have been enjoying bike riding on the new (to me) boardwalk as often as possible. The views of the sky and sea are stunning and have a meditative quality for me (and others, I am sure). The one thing that has been very distressing to me is the amount of dog feces all along the bike/pedestrian path. I am, to use a euphemism, shocked and amazed by the lack of care and concern for our beautiful area. Many of us have dogs, and walk them all the time as is necessary, and many of us do not, but it is still astonishing to see the amount of dog remnants all along the path. COVID put the Rockaway Theatre Company on hold. However, one RTC member has embarked with his brother on a quarantine project which has had unexpected results. Nick Safier, a personal fitness trainer, has been acting since playing the Cowardly Lion in the Wizard of Oz in sixth grade. After playing the lead in The Great Gatsby at RTC, he was excitedly looking forward to hitting the stage in Jesus Christ Superstar when the pandemic threw everything up into the air. Without his Rockaway home away from home, Safier says, “I really didn’t know what to do with myself.” Then around late March he started posting videos on the popular TikTok app. “At first, the goal was to build up a social media presence to help me as an actor when auditions resumed,” Safier said. But soon “it became so much more.” “I randomly made one video with my brother Gabriel…and it struck a chord. People loved the relationship we had as brothers. I believe people also loved it because it was about brothers, our humanity and love for each other.” He notes that Gabe, who has Down syndrome, loves the spotlight, and he, his brother, and sister, Kira, all “love to be on stage or to be theatrical in some way.” So more videos followed. The response was more than the Safier brothers expected. To date they have amassed more than 728,000 followers, moving towards one million. Safier’s videos have received more than 7.4 million “Likes.” And they have received comments from as far away as Japan, England, Germany, Scotland and every state in the U.S. But more than that has been the deeply felt responses they have received. What has struck Safier most has been the “incredibly uplifting, positive” words from around the world. “I’ve received comments such as, ‘This was the first time I smiled today’, ‘We need more of this in the world’, ‘This is (what) people
need to be seeing, videos that bring people together’, ‘I look forward to seeing your videos every day. It’s the brightest part of my day,’ and ‘The world feels so dark and depressing lately, and this makes it all feel better, as if there is hope for the future’.” There are now well over 250 videos online. The short clips show the brothers walking across fields, swimming, sharing a sunset and, smartly dressed for the occasion, getting ready “to bring in 2021 on a high note.” “We make videos spreading love and awareness every day,” Safier said. They have also led Safier to complete a movie script. He’s now aiming for production and development. Centered around a man and his younger brother with Down syndrome, he says it is “inspired by love and compassion received from people who love the message we are putting out there.” About this unexpected pandemic project, he notes, “If you asked me in March if I ever thought this is where we would be almost a year later, I never could’ve imagined. There is something very special about the journey this has taken. It’s even more special because I get to take it with my brother.” What’s ahead? “My goal then and now remains the same- I want to continue to spread love, hope, compassion, and awareness of people with Down syndrome on TikTok and Instagram (@nicksafier).” Now stars of the smallest screen, Nick and Gabriel’s story might be told all in one image: two brothers sharing a hug.

Owen Daniel McVeigh, 90, was one of eight children born in the Bronx, NY on October 24, 1930 of Irish immigrant parents, Catherine Naughton and Francis McVeigh. Loving husband of Lily McVeigh for the past 28 years. Predeceased by his first wife, Margaret L. McVeigh. Loving father of 10 children, Margaret Palma, Owen Michael (Maureen), James (Charmaine), Thomas (Patricia), Vincent (Jennifer), Kevin (Sally), Michael (Elizabeth), Francis (Theresa), Kathleen Coughlin (Robert), Terence (Virginia). Loving grandfather of 22 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Loving brother of Anne and beloved Uncle to the McVeighs in Florida. In addition, he leaves behind his cousin, Paddy Goodman, and many relatives in Ireland. Owen passed peacefully on January 25, 2021 in Palm City, Florida, surrounded by his family. Owen served his country during the Korean War in both the United States Army and the United States Marine Corps. He went on to serve the City of New York as an officer in the NYPD for 26 years with a majority of those years spent in the 101 Precinct. The McVeigh children were raised in a loving environment in a beautiful orange brick house on Beach 127th Street. Owen and Lily resided in Palm City, Florida for much of the last 20 years. Frequent trips to Rockaway for summers and family events were the norm. He enjoyed playing golf in his later years but mostly enjoyed the time he spent with his family. He made the most delicious breakfast of bacon and pancakes. His meatloaf and mashed potatoes were family favorites. Owen was the master of cleaning; his floors were always spotless and his clothes were always folded to perfection, a trait he passed on to many of his family members. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on February 20, 2021 at 10:30am at St. Francis De Sales. Due to Covid restrictions, the Mass is limited to immediate family. A live stream of the Mass will be available on the St. Francis De Sales Church Facebook page. A Memorial celebration of his life will be held at a later date. It is often said that death defines life, or said another way, it is death that gives meaning to life. We all face death, but unfortunately, not all humans have to deal with ageing (or aging if you prefer). Too many young people have their lives cut short by wars, disease, drugs, violence, etc., before they have a chance to age. Another common saying is that youth is wasted on the young, but that’s a topic for another day. Most humans will grow old and experience ageing, which is usually not fun, as many older individuals know and will tell you. But exactly why our bodies change as we age is not fully understood yet, but we are learning more about ageing every day. For example, last November the New York Post had an ar-
ticle about a study done in Tel Aviv. Researchers there placed middle aged volunteers into a hyperbaric oxygen chamber for 90 minutes a day, five days a week, for three months. They found that on the biological level, the volunteers had their cellular age reversed by 25 years. Ageing occurs on a cellular level because of both programmed, genetic changes in cells and damage to DNA. Both processes cause DNA mutations to occur as cells divide. Cellular division occurs constantly from conception to death because cells themselves die and must be replaced. However, research has shown that some human cells, for example some cancer cells, stem cells, and germ cells, when grown in culture medium do not die. Leonard Hayflick, a researcher at UCSF who wrote How and Why We Die, found that human cells in culture will divide up to 50
times and then stop dividing, becoming what are called senescent cells. Research has found that ageing occurs on a cellular level for primarily two reasons – the shortening of telomeres, also called the “Holy Grail” of ageing, and the formation of senescent cells. Telomeres are extensions on the ends of chromosomes that protect against DNA replication errors, or mutations. The shorter the telomere, the more likely are DNA mutations. There are examples of “immortal” organisms in nature. Some bacteria fission to make daughter cells, strawberries grow runners to make clones of themselves, and hydra, small, fresh-water organisms, regenerate themselves. In 1987, Rowe and Kahn defined “successful ageing” as 1) freedom from disease and disability; 2) high cognitive and physical functioning; 3) social and productive engagement. As birthrates drop, the devel-
oped world is getting older. Currently 11% of the population is 60 and older, and it is estimated that number will be 22% by 2050. Ageing in humans causes many changes to the body. Blood vessels stiffen, bones shrink and lose density, muscles lose strength, endurance, and flexibility, the bladder becomes stiffer, skin becomes thinner, less elastic, and bruises more easily, and metabolism slows, to name a few of the changes. Recommendations to” successfully” age include getting daily exercise, eating a healthy diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables, getting seven to nine hours of sleep a night, managing stress, managing your weight, avoiding smoking, and keeping your mind active by reading, doing puzzles (crosswords are my favorite), getting a hobby, or playing an instrument. New Light Comes To Broad Channel Entrance Let there be a light! A new, long-awaited traffic light is now at the entrance to Broad Channel at 1st Road and Cross Bay Boulevard. The new traffic light allows for safe access to the Broad Channel Athletic Club (BCAC), and calms traffic in the highly congested area. Community leaders and residents of Broad Channel have been fighting for a traffic light at this intersection for more than a decade, noting the condition was especially hazardous for the hundreds of children who visit the Broad Channel Athletic Club. In collaboration with the Broad Channel Civic Association, State Sen. Joseph P. Addabbo, and Assembly Member Stacey Pheffer Amato, Councilman Eric Ulrich partnered with the New York City Dept. of Transportation to install the new traffic light. "For years, this community has been fighting to see safety im-
provements at the entrance of Broad Channel. Our office has been working tirelessly to make this intersection safer for both pedestrians and motorists alike," said Councilman Eric Ulrich. Meet Yourself Where You Are “Meet yourself where you are,� was the beginning message in my most recent yoga class. I thought about imparting the message of enjoying the class rather than judging what one can do or cannot do, or silently grunting when there is a pose not particularly a favorite, or whatever the edge might have been. This can be applied to most anything we do. How do I feel
today - physically, mentally, emotionally? Strong? Tender? Energetic? Weaker than usual? Fatigued? Powerful? Happy? The list goes on. Taking some full deep breaths helps to quiet the mind allowing for the answer to that question to arise. Check in and then whatever comes up after some tuned in moments, honor that state of being. guiding a yoga class with a balance sequence and I was falling out on one side. . . that leg, that day was just not strong. I breathed, focused on my “drishti� - point of concentration - and said, “I’m happy to have this leg to stand on.� I met myself where I was that day in that moment. That is not to say that afterwards, I did not work on some strengthening because I wanted to practice balance sequences. So, it is all about the attitude surrounding the experience, meeting myself where I was at that moment, being ok with it and not caring if someone was judging otherwise. It makes the experience a positive one rather than a mixed or negative one, thereby contributing to our well-being. I look for every way in my daily life to be well and happy and try to share with you the thoughts and practices that work for me. We really have a choice about what we think and how we react. We can choose how we look at something and it is in that choice
Page 29 that brings the message to our hearts. If we react in anger, we are going to feel that. If we react in kindness, we’re going to feel that. That was a bit of a diversion from the original thought of this column but it is tied to it in that once we meet ourselves where we’re at, we have a choice as to how we go from there. I don’t need this moment to be anything other than what it is; it is enough right now. I can trust myself by looking within for what I seek. It’s a lesson many learn at a young age is: do not litter. It is not only disrespectful and inconsiderate, but it also poses a serious threat to the environment and the health and wellness of a community. It seems as if some in Rockaway may have forgotten this lesson, or never learned it at all. In recent months, litter has been piling up at an alarming rate in and around the Rockaway peninsula. One area in particular that speaks to this claim is near Beach 102nd Street and the Rockaway Freeway, in the vicinity of the Sands Point Professional Building. Prior to this weekend, the once-flourishing greenery surrounding the area was inundated with all kinds of litter, including but not limited to fecal matter, food wrappers, plastic shopping bags, and medical supplies (masks and gloves). According to locals, Sands Point management has been called upon numerous times to adPoint to around the block, along the freeway, and on to Beach 101st Street and beyond. Other areas in the Rockaways have the same issue, but what makes this location a point of interest is the way the property owner is allegedly handling the situation. According to a Rockaway local, Christine James,

Sands Point patients have been complaining as well and they still do not seem to listen or care.” The Department of Sanitation has been notified about the ongoing situation but they too can only do so much. As a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there have been budget cuts across the board regarding city agencies, one being the Department of Sanitation. Over the summer, the City of New York slashed $106 million from their operating budget, per NY1. Despite the setbacks, Sanitation crews also lent a helping hand on Saturday by picking up the garbage the crew had collected. By the time the cleanup concluded, the sidewalk that was once inundated with litter was now lined with garbage bags stuffed to the brim. The clean-up over the weekend demonstrated the power of the people coming together to make the community a safer and more enjoyable place. There have been many cleanups coordinated by both Michael Scala and Torey Schnupp and there will be many more in the future. Keep an eye out. Any help is needed and greatly appreciated!

Wrestle Talk A NEW YEAR FOR PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING By Eric Jayden
As we welcome 2021, we enter another year of professional wrestling still in the pandemic era. What changes will this year bring? What challenges and obstacles will professional wrestling face? Whatever may happen, we here at WrestleTalk will stay on top of all the latest news and happenings. Let's start off with breaking news from the WWE! As reported from various news agencies, the WWE has sold its United States rights to air to and distribute the WWE Network. The WWE network is the streaming service viewed by over one million subscribers which have access to WWE content, matches and Pay Per Views. The purchase was made by NBCUniversal Peacock for
an estimated one billion dollars. The WWE Network will launch on Peacock on March 18 with more than 17,000 hours of new and old wrestling content. The WWE Network will be available on Peacock for $4.99 a month, or customers will have the
option of paying $9.99 without ads. The prices also include access to pay-per-view events such as such as Royal Rumble and SummerSlam and Wrestlemania. The WWE has noted that the sale of the WWE Network will not impact shows like Raw and Smack-
down that will continue to air on the USA Network and Fox Channel. The WWE network will continue to operate on its own overseas. What does this all mean for WWE? Well, the deal is significant for Peacock because the WWE carries a huge fanbase and NBCUniversal is hoping the purchase will entice WWE Fans to jump over to the Peacock network. Many WWE fans that I've spoken to have mixed reactions about the deal but I'm willing to give it a try. Most did say they will continue to pay the $9.99 monthly fee to avoid advertisements.
