Broad Channel Christmas Tree Lit for the Season It wasn’t just Christmas lights that filled Cross Bay Boulevard on Sunday night. Lights of the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department (BCVFD) vehicles filled the street for a different kind of emergency. After all, they were trans-
porting Santa Claus to the Broad Channel Athletic Club (BCAC) to help light the Broad Channel community’s Christmas tree. This year’s Broad Channel Christmas tree lighting on Sunday, December 6, looked a bit different due to coronavirus restrictions, but it wasn’t going to stop the Christmas spirit of the town. Families lined up along Cross Bay Blvd. to see the big man in the red suit as he passed by in a BCVFD fire truck. While the Broad Channel Christmas tree lighting is usually accompanied by singing and dance performances, this year, the main focus was the lighting itself as a small, masked crowd gathered around the tree made possible by Lisena Garden Center and the BCAC. The tree was dedicated to all of those who were lost due to coronavirus this year, and all of the frontline workers that have worked so hard to keep people safe in

A Miracle on 116th Street
Due to the coronavirus, the annual lighting ceremony for the Beach 116th Christmas tree looked a little different this year. Assembly District Leader Lew Simon and Elizabeth Hanna of Rockaway Businesses Need You teamed up for a quick, modified lighting on the evening of Wednesday, December 9, which was broadcasted on Facebook. The pair plugged in the tree, generously donated by Lisena Garden Center, for Rockaway Park’s shopping corridor. “We feel very sad that we all can’t be here today together as a family in the Rockaway, Broad Channel, Breezy community, but we did make it happen,” Simon said. He added that next week, the Knights of Columbus are expected to add the nativity scene to the display. Both Simon and Hanna urged people to support local
businesses by any way possible, including with gift card purchases, as Covid spikes may cause them to close soon. “Hopefully we don’t get shut down again but if we do, Rockaway is the greatest community and we always support each other,” Hanna said.

And Happy Chanukah, too! ***** On Sunday, December 6, City Councilman Donovan Richards became Queens Borough President Donovan Richards as he was sworn into by office by New York State Attorney General Letitia James. It’s always good to see someone who served Rockaway (and knows where it is!) to move on to bigger jobs. ***** We’re not sure how many of the declared Mayoral candidates have been to Rockaway (yes, Mr. Stringer, we know you have) but we’ll start seeing them soon, though some of the meetings might be virtual. ***** Shaun Donovan who served under Michael Bloomberg as Commissioner of the Depart-
ment of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) and later served under President Barack Obama as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), held a virtual meeting a few weeks ago with some Rockaway folks before he made his mayoral candidacy official on Monday. ***** Rep. Gregory Meeks, the congressman repping Rockaway, was selected to chair the House Foreign Affairs Committee, the first African American to hold such a position. Foreign affairs range from health, terrorism, education, human rights, energy, and trade. ***** Not a politician, but another well-known face will be making visits to Rockaway soon—Santa Claus! On Saturday, December 12 at 5 p.m., he’ll be stopping by the Little North Pole (144-03 Neponsit Avenue) and giving out goodies at their drive-by event. Then on Sunday, he’ll be back for Rockaway WISH’s car parade. Starting at 4 p.m., Santa will leave the Belle Harbor Yacht Club on Beach 126th and will head down Beach 129th to 149th, then down

We know those gift certificates will come in handy! ***** Last year, the voters chose ranked-choice voting [RCV] which allows voters to pick up to five candidates in order of pref-
erence. If no candidate receives more than 50% of the total, the last place finisher is eliminated. The voters that picked the eliminated candidate will have their second choice counted. That process is repeated until there's a winner. It’s done in other places and will make races with several candidates very interesting. Underdog or dark horse candidates could emerge. ***** Speaking of voting, Kevin Boyle’s ballot remains at the Post Office (not in Rockaway Park). A week ago, a Postal Rep said they’re “looking into this.” The ballot was sent on September 30 and the good news is it can be tracked online. The bad news is, well, it’s still at the Post Office. Somewhere. ***** Kingsborough Community College is offering the My Turn program, which is free for New York residents 60 and over. The program offers some 400 online classes to choose from. As parts of Rockaway have seen increases in Covid-19 cases, it’s important to keep track of how the neighborhood is doing with coronavirus. Robby Schwach of Councilman Eric Ulrich’s office has been hard at work, tracking down the details for each Rockaway zip code and sending weekly updates. For the interest of our readers, we are sharing this info each week. As there were delays in updates to the NYC Department of Health website, the latest info only represents changes between 11/30/2020-12/04/2020. In 11691, positive cases increased by 76 from 3,422 to 3,498. There were no new deaths in this period, and the total remains at 381 since November 24. In 11692, cases went up by 16, from 807 to 823. There were no new deaths in this period and the total remains at 95 since
October 12. In 11693, cases rose by 16 from 440 to 456. There were no new deaths in this period and the total remains at 29 since early summer. In 11694, there was an increase in cases by 53, from 984 to 1037. There were no new deaths in this period and the total remains at 90 since August 17. In 11697, cases rose by 23, from 198 to 221. There were no new deaths in this period and the total remains at five since September 14. NYC is now releasing statistics showing the seven-day rolling average of positive tests by zip code. As of December 7, 11691 is 7.6%, 11692 is 4.32%, 11693 is 6.27%, 11694 is 7.04%, 11697 is 8.81% Please remember to wear a mask, particularly indoors and where social distancing is not possible.

Barbie Essay Contest Launched
Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato announced that she is partnering with the Rockaway Leaders Alliance (RLA), a collection of public school leaders on the Rockaway Peninsula, to launch an essay contest inspired by the Barbie’s ‘She Should Run’ Campaign Team set of dolls. This set presents Barbie with new career opportunities as a candidate, campaign manager, fundraiser, and voter. The essay contest asks students to submit 300-500 words answering the question, “If you had political power to change a law or create a new one, what law would it be and why?” The contest, open to 4th and 5th Graders at participating public schools, will run through December 18. Local Pol Briefs **** Assemblywoman Stacey Amato urged the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Board (MTA) to not eliminate resident toll discount programs in upcoming potential budget cuts, and called out the agency to stop the outdated practice of bonding on the toll revenue on the only intra-borough tolled bridge in New York State - which would be the first step in eliminating the toll altogether. During the public hearing the MTA officials outlined measures they will have to take without federal assistance including the elimination of resident toll discount programs, raising fares, decreasing subway and bus services throughout the city, and proceeding with layoffs throughout the system. “During the midst of an economic downturn, the MTA cannot raise tolls and
fares and should not eliminate any jobs – and our rebate should not even be a part of the conversation,” Pheffer Amato said. **** Senator Joe Addabbo and Assemblyman Andrew Hevesi introduced legislation requiring New York State to cover testing costs for private, religious, and nonpublic schools. Wick and Pour Offers a Scentsational Experience By Katie McFadden
As we cap off a dark year, a new business hopes to bring a bit of hope and light. The only one in New York City, Wick and Pour has brought the experience of candle making right to Rockaway. A pre-launch event on December 5 shed some light on what’s to come for this brand-new studio offering a unique opportunity. On Saturday, December 5, Wick and Pour, located in a brand-new studio space on the second floor of 88-08 Rockaway Beach Blvd., opened its doors to the community, giving a few lucky participants the chance to preview the scentsational experience of pouring their own candles to take home. This successful prelaunch event was complemented by catered food from Cuisine by Claudette, live music by Greg Ruby and a selection of wines from Ship to Shore Wine Store, so guests could “get lit” while creating candles. Jess Wu and Steve Kanemori, self-described “wax manipulators,” are the brains behind this new interactive business, but these partners have long been invested in the art of candle making. Wu and Kanemori started making candles in their homes to give as gifts. “It started out as more of a hobby. I found it relaxing, and I didn’t want to have to spend a lot on Yankee Candles and other name brands. I thought, why not just do it myself?” Kanemori said. Little did he know that candle-making was in his blood. “I later found out that my great grandfather was a candle maker in Japan,” he said. As Wu and Kanemori developed their skill, they started to give their hobby more purpose. “I made candles based off my favorite books and my friends loved them. I put them online and instantly sales started coming in and it hasn’t stopped since then,” Wu said. Their bookthemed candle business, Wick and Fable, was born in 2016. The booming success of Wick and Fable necessitated a move from a living-room based business to a workshop. Wu and Kanemori built up Wick and Fable in a warehouse in Inwood, but after living in Rock-
away for five years, they wanted something a little closer to home. The perfect opportunity opened up with the revitalization of the Wave Building. Wu and Kanemori weren’t considering starting a candle lab when looking for a local space to grow their business, but the large studio space with floorto-ceiling windows shed light on a chance to kickstart another dream. “We were just looking for a place to make candles and ship orders out, but I saw the windows of the space and it really caught my eye. I had to come choose from more than 20 scents back the next day and decided made up of fragrance oils and on the spot that we would take essential oils. From seasonal selections to locally inspired choices, guests had the opportunity to smell each scent and choose which one they wanted to include in their candle. The most popular choice of the day? Rockaway Beach—a mix of ocean breezes, sea salt and crisp ozone. After selecting a scent, guests chose which colored vessel they wanted for their 11oz candle. Then a friendly assistant walked each guest through the steps, from measuring out the perfect amount of melted wax and scented oil, to placing the wicks in the vessel and decorating the interior of the candle with dried flowers for an extra splash of color. the food and wine as an incentive, but everyone came out for the experience and we got a lot of good feedback.” With the pandemic in mind, the owners were planning to officially open in the spring, but the overwhelming support from their landlords, neighbors and guests has them considering officially launching Wick and Pour sooner and another prelaunch event is already in the works. They plan to host a holiday event on December 18 and 19, and they’re already booking private parties for businesses looking for team building events to bachelorette and bridal showers and beyond. With each event, the owners will be picking up tips on how to make an already-awesome experience even better, and they already have some ideas in mind. From more scents and vessel options, to another selfie station and seeking a liquor license to offer beverage selections for people to get lit while they pour, Wick and Pour is just getting started and will grow and mold this new experience as it sets aglow. “Now more than ever, we all need a little bit of hope and light, so we hope that we can bring some of that to the community during these uncertain times,” Kanemori said. The Little North Pole Shows Corona Can’t Stop Santa By Katie McFadden
“Corona can’t stop Santa!” Joe Mure’s message was clear on Saturday, December 5, as the Little North Pole was officially lit for the season in a small, safe ceremony. And it will continue throughout the holiday season as Rockaway’s best-lit house makes spirits bright at the end a difficult year. It wasn’t the usual entertainment-filled lighting that draws huge crowds outside of the home at 144-03 Neponsit Avenue, as with everything, coronavirus has changed plans. But it wasn’t going to stop the true purpose of the Little North Pole—to bring a smile to every kid’s face with a holiday memory that will last a lifetime, and to raise funds for those whose life is a bit more difficult under normal circumstances—those living with juvenile diabetes. A small group of family, friends, the hard-working volunteers who make the display possible, some special guests who had the honor of illuminating the home, and of course, Santa Claus, were the only
ones on site as the Little North Pole was lit for the season on Saturday. In this coronavirus Christmas season, the scaleddown ceremony was fitting. “As you can see, this is a very light crowd,” Mure said. “Everyone is outside, everyone has a mask, everyone is staying apart from each other, but we’re doing a small lighting of the Little North Pole because Corona can’t stop Santa.” Despite the pandemic, Mure explained why he continued to
put on the annual display for the community. “It’s so important because of the children. They haven’t been able to go to school, they haven’t been able to go out and play. We want them to come here and enjoy the lights of the Little North Pole. We want them to smile, we want them to have a good time and we want them to have fun again. In 2020, there hasn’t been much fun for anyone, children or adults,” he said. The display also continues to raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDFR). To kick it off right, Mure and his fiancé, Jodi Tucci, enlisted the help of two special children who they say have put a smile on their face, and who could use one in return. “They went through some difficult times this year and they’re going to light up the Little North Pole,” Mure said. With a countdown from 10, smiles lit up the faces of
15-year-old Giuseppe Sarrubbo and six-year-old Jenna Rainone as they helped press the magic button to illuminate the Little North Pole for the season. Giuseppe, of Staten Island, is one of the many children that JDRF aims to help, as he was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes in October. “It felt pretty good to light this whole house with this little girl,” Giuseppe said. That little girl, Jenna, of Howard Beach, was a student in Tucci’s kindergarten class, who underwent open heart surgery this year, something that Mure himself endured last year. “It was such an honor for them to think of her,” Jenna’s mother, Tiffany Rainone said. “We love Christmas, so this was a good way to kick off the season. I think it’s wonderful what Joe and his family are doing because it keeps everyone’s spirits high and this is exactly what we need at a time like this.” Spirits will continue to be
lifted throughout the season as the Little North Pole will be lit through at least the end of the year. As the 2018 winner of ABC’s “The Great Christmas Light Fight,” the display on its own is impressive, but there are plenty of surprises in store. This year, Sandy the dog and the faces on the trees had a little work done in Santa’s workshop and now will both talk and sing. Also, the singing light show is back! Every half an hour, from 4:30 p.m. until 9 p.m., or up until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, the light show will go off and you don’t even need to leave your car to enjoy it! Simply tune in to 88.7 FM on your car radio to hear the music that the lights sing and dance to. And since “corona can’t stop Santa,” the big man in the red suit will be back this Saturday, December 12 for some socially distanced season’s greetings. From 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., the Little North Pole is hosting a driveby event so kids can say hello to Santa, hand him their letter or tell him their wishes and receive a goodie. Cars can line up from Beach 145th to Beach 149th Street along Neponsit Avenue to meet Santa. Mure encourages all passengers to wear masks to keep themselves and Santa safe during the event. Besides creating smiles, the Little North Pole aims to raise money for JDRF. While the event raises as much as $100K to $200K annually, Mure understands the pandemic may keep donations smaller this year, but every bit helps. For those who are able to contribute, donation boxes will be outside of the home during Saturday’s Santa drive-by and throughout the season. Donations can also be made directly online at www. Most importantly, Mure hopes everyone stays safe this season as they experience the magic of the Little North Pole. “People should come out here and enjoy it, but please, wear your mask, please be safe, please social distance. We don’t want anyone to get sick,” he said. After all, the only red nose we want to see this season is Rudolph’s.

Community Board 14 December Meeting Recap By Marina Cregan
The last Community Board 14 (CB14) meeting of the year was held on Tuesday, December 8. With a total of 64 participants on the Zoom call, all were eager to hear the information presented by the NYC Dept. of City Planning regarding the new amendment to the special regulations in flood hazard areas. The meeting began with a report from Chairwoman Dolores Orr. She stated that she attended a meeting with the JFK Airport Committee, which focuses on airport construction and the impact of flights over our community. They will be asking the FAA to do a study on rerouting departing flights that use Runway 31A, which currently flies over Howard Beach across Broad Channel Island and Rockaway Beach/ Rockaway Park and Bayswater/ Far Rockaway. If the FAA agrees to conduct the study, they will redirect departing flight routes
to fly over Jamaica Bay. Orr concluded her report by announcing that the City is looking to have concessionaires with electric scooters, and Rockaway will be one of the places to receive the scooters. These scooters will be permitted to ride in NYC designated bike lanes. However, Orr stated that the question now becomes whether the scooters will be allowed on the bike lanes on the boardwalk. As of now, the Dept. of Transportation declined scheduling a meeting regarding this topic, stating that it is too early in the process to decide on specific details. The meeting continued with a brief presentation from Matthew Walker, an outreach specialist for the Council of Airport Opportunity. The goal of this organization is to help underserved communities located by the airports and individuals from these communities find job opportunities at the airports. Walker stated that al-

though air travel has slowed down since COVID-19, there are still a number of positions they are looking to fill. The Council of Airport Opportunity hosts workforce webinars with the Queens Public Library every Tuesday and Thursday at 10 a.m., where individuals are introduced to different career sectors at the airport. NYS Assemblyman Khaleel Anderson then gave an update regarding his first month in office. He has co-sponsored ten pieces of legislation addressing the housing crisis across the state. The pieces of legislation address New Yorkers falling behind with their rent and mortgage, as well as all of the small businesses that are struggling to afford their commercial rents. The Save Our Storefront bill will provide state funding and support to those businesses. Additionally, Anderson introduced his first bill that would help renters in public housing. Next, Captain Fabara from the 100th Precinct gave a 28-day
update regarding crimes. There were no murders. Rapes were down 50% from the same 28day period last year. There were two robbery incidents, both involving carjacking, which he believes were conducted by the same individual. Felony assaults are up about 50% from last year’s 28-day period. These assaults are mainly being driven by domestic incidents, but they have arrested more than half of those assailants. Fabara reported that there has been a decrease in grand larceny auto. He concluded his report stating that overall our crime is up 13%, which is a total increase of four crimes for the 28 day period. The meeting continued with the main item on the agenda, the City Planning’s Zoning for Coastal Flood Resiliency, which focused mainly on the resiliency of NYC’s buildings stock. Continued from Page 16 City Planning’s (DCP) representative, Hallah Saleh. This proposed text amendment will be added to the existing flood plan that was initiated after Superstorm Sandy. These will be citywide changes, but DCP is very interested in hearing from coastal communities on how they feel about the new text amendments. This zoning proposal focuses the most on areas FEMA has designated as high risk flood zones, or the 1% of flood zones, which includes Rockaway and Broad Channel. The city’s floodplain includes a variety of neighborhoods, including residences and local businesses. Saleh stated that they need to implement a strategy that includes multiple kinds of defense. The city work includes coastal defense strategies, protection of inland infrastructure (e.g. drainage and transit), and advanced emergency preparedness. Because these zoning text

Saleh stated there are regulations which apply to the construction of buildings in the floodplain today. These regulations can be found in the Building Code Appendix G, which is regulated and enforced by the Dept. of Buildings. Saleh concluded her presentation by stating the four proposed goals for the original 2013 text amendments regarding zoning for coastal resilience. She stated the 2013 provisions did not assist all types of communities across the city floodplain, meaning older neighborhoods did not receive enough relief. The first goal is to encourage resilience throughout the current and future floodplain, which will expand the applicability of the current amendment to a broader set of buildings exposed to flooding. The second goal is to support long term resilient design of all building types, encouraging building

heights to be higher and more consistent. Additionally, there will be ground floor regulations, which will help promote long term resilient design and neighborhood streetscapes. The third goal is to allow for adaptation over time through incremental retrofits. This will allow for additional flexibility for wider range of siting for these structures, provided they’re not placed too close to neighboring property. The last goal is to facilitate future recovery by reducing regulatory obstacles for the entire city, not just those located in the floodplain. This will ensure all areas can provide ADA access and classify ramps/ lifts as permitted obstructions, as well as all power systems such as generators to be permitted. This goal will also look at how disasters that require evacuation of residents impact vulnerable populations. It will prohibit new nursing homes and allow for the enlargement of existing facilities within the 1% annual chance floodplain. The purpose of the new zone amendments is to enable new rules that would help more
Page 17 predictable long-term recovery efforts, allowing for homeowners and businesses to have a longer timeline to conduct recovery operations. The meeting concluded with CB14 voting on the motion whether or not to accept the new zone text amendments regarding Coastal Flood Resiliency. CB14 Board passed a motion in support of the zoning changes with a few amendments that they recommend. The amendments suggested from CB14 were as follows: to see a proposed text change stating those in the 1% floodplain zoning do not have to abide by Appendix G guidelines for existing homeowners if they wish to renovate their homes for less than 75% of renovations; the definition of vulnerable populations to not only include nursing homes, but those in any adult homes/ assisted living facilities, homeless shelters, and to restrict any new senior housing to residents of that CB only; and that the amount of new housing has to correlate with the ability of our evacuation routes.

SLICE OF LIFE By Beth Hanning Elf on the Shelf: Pro or Con? It is that time of year again where we will all be subjected to the crazy elf pictures when many of our social media friends try to outdo one another with their elaborate poses and shenanigans. Will this year be easier or harder? Tell the children that the elf is quarantined? Or does that make life harder, as now you had to order a mask, and supplies to quarantine the elf? For those of you like me, who either have older children or no children at all, the Elf on the Shelf is a book that was published in 2005 by
the genius mother-daughter team of Carol Aebersold and Chanda Bell. They are paired with Chanda’s twin sister, Christa Pitts who is the coCEO with Chanda. Chanda is a former English teacher who co-wrote the book with her mom. (I wish as a current English teacher, I could think of something this genius!) The pair wrote the book based on the family’s tradition, about a toy elf that monitors the children’s behavior and reports back to the North Pole each night. The book was self-pub-
lished by the trio and at first was not a hit. What prompted part of the madness was actress Jennifer Garner being photographed with the book and then The Today Show featuring it on a segment. The books, which retail for $29.95 and come with the toy elf have since made millions. According to the Atlanta Journal, they have sold over 13 million books since 2005. There has also been a CBS Special that has aired twice and has had over ten million viewers. I will be honest, probably due to social media, I started to truly hate this elf. I could not believe the elaborate pictures and things people did with this elf! As a mom, I was often overwhelmed with housework, my own job and the children’s schoolwork. I could not imagine being asked, “Mom, why doesn’t our elf do such and such?” But after reading so many posts today on my Facebook page and receiving texts from friends with smaller children, I agreed with so many
The Rockaway Times moms and dads: They are only young for a short time and it does go by so fast. If they enjoy it, do it! Many people admitted they do not do anything fancy. One mother texted me: “My elf is not pooping Cheerios or making marshmallows. We just hide it and our son finds it.” Maybe I am becoming a softie? Even some parents who did not enjoy it during earlier years admitted they enjoy it now and will miss it when it is over. So the comments from past years were more negative than this year. I wonder if we are seeing parents realizing that the time is short-lived with the youngsters. I do miss those years where Christmas was a magical time of year. So it seems the good outweighs the bad. Keep the elf and keep sharing the stories with me. I enjoyed hearing them. Just do not annoy me with the elaborate pictures. LOL. Have a great week everyone.

As we near the year-end holidays, one of the best things in the world is getting Christmas cards! Many people include pictures of their families or trips that they have taken during the year, and it’s a great way to catch up with friends and relatives that you don’t always see. This year is different. The pandemic has robbed so many of any joy this year because there haven’t been
any trips and because some families have lost loved ones along the way due to this terrible virus. But I’m still determined to send Christmas cards, and hope to receive some too from others who are as determined to spread a little cheer. My only concern is – will they be delivered? My faith in the Post Office has plummeted again, as it had a year or two ago. At that time, I wrote about bills that I mailed that never got
to their destinations. Other people noticed too. In fact, I got a call from the Post Office Investigation department, or something like that. It seemed that they had discovered that thieves were fishing in mailboxes for checks and stealing mail and money. The Post Office acted decisively by appending a tighter mail slot onto mailboxes that made it tougher to fish for envelopes. It seemed to work, because my checks got to their destinations again. That is up until recently. I noticed that it started happening again. I thought this time, maybe this is a ploy to get me out of the dark ages and into paying bills electronically? I mean, those of us with grown kids know that they don’t have checkbooks, don’t write checks, and have never balanced a check book! It’s only old fogeys like me who mail bills. It’s a lonely walk to the mailbox, and I seldom meet anyone on the way doing the same thing. I asked the person who lives in the house in front
The Rockaway Times of the mailbox, “anybody else visiting this blue box in front of your house?” He said “yeah, plenty of people”; but I think he sits in his living room with a cup of tea chuckling at me putting my envelopes in the slot, like a gambler buying a lottery ticket. And it’s not because I’m playing the “float” by mailing checks. Seriously, interest rates are so low, how am I going to make any money by delaying the National Grid bill. No, it’s because once every two weeks, I get to sit down and look at our finances and understand what I am paying for. Seems like a good practice, one that I learned from my Dad, and one that I did a poor job of passing on to my own kids. Now it’s been a couple of weeks and no checks have been cashed, not even by the people who were supposed to get them. you see on Facebook every once in a while, when an overworked federal employee just dumps the mail somewhere. And I do have sympathy for the postal carriers, who at least in our neighborhood are really nice people you can strike up a conversation with. And Lord knows it’s a tough job when you are under-funded, and everyone is looking for Kevin Boyle’s absentee ballot in that tiny Post Office. I guess it’s just hard to find, or maybe it’s hiding out with my bills somewhere in that empty lot further up the road. Who knows? And the business of running a Post Office as a government department is not easy, especially with FedEx and UPS competing against you, not to mention undercharging Amazon for all those deliveries. I see those poor Post Office folks delivering Amazon packages on Sundays. Is nothing sacred? What I do hope for is that
in this pandemic year, that Christmas cards get delivered and they get delivered on time and to the right people, and that they spread some cheer in a dark time. I don’t want to read on the app Nextdoor about lost packages and you probably don’t want to hear me droning on about lost bills. However, I would like the mail to get to where it’s supposed to be. How can we operate an economy if the mail is unreliable? In any case, I am now dipping my toe into electronic bill paying. But I draw the line at sending electronic Christmas cards, at that I will go postal!

Herd Is The Word
Now that there is a vaccine for COVID-19 on the way, the concept of herd immunity is being talked about more often. The experts are assuring us that this pandemic will finally be over once we have vaccinated enough people to achieve herd immunity. Today I would like to look into some aspects of the concept of herd immunity. Herd immunity occurs when a significant portion of a population becomes immune to an infectious disease, thereby limiting further disease spread. Those who are not immune are indirectly protected because ongoing disease spread is very small. A person can become immune to a dis-
ease either by catching it and recovering or by immunization. The proportion of a population who must be immune to achieve herd immunity varies by disease. For example, a disease that is highly contagious such as measles, requires more than 95% of the population to be immune to stop sustained disease spread and achieve herd immunity. If you recall, we saw examples of this in 2019, before the current pandemic, in outbreaks of measles in different parts of the country. Those outbreaks occurred because of two factors – vaccination refusals by antivaxxers and an influx of sick unvaccinated individuals from outside of the U.S. In addition,
measles is much more virulent than COVID as nearly everyone who contracts it will have symptoms, and the death rate, especially among children, is much higher. Getting back to COVID, the actual proportion of immune people required to achieve herd immunity is still unknown, but I have seen numbers around 70%. It is not 95% because coronavirus is not nearly as contagious as measles. Herd immunity protects those who cannot be vaccinated, such as newborns and those with compromised immune systems. Immunity from either vaccination or disease usually wanes over time, requiring revaccination. It is not yet known how long immunity to COVID lasts, either from vaccination or disease. In some situations, even if a large proportion of adults have developed immunity after infection, the disease may still circulate among children. Herd immunity, even when very high, does not fully protect those who are not immune. Herd immunity reduces the risk of infection but does not eliminate it. It is not yet known if having COVID confers immunity to future re-
The Rockaway Times infection, in fact there have been a few anecdotal reports of individuals contracting it a second time. Most likely infection does impart immunity, but for how long is unknown. To achieve herd immunity by infection alone would probably overwhelm our healthcare system and cause even more deaths and complications, so the release of a vaccine is most welcome. Even with widespread immunizations starting early next year, it will take time to achieve herd immunity. I have seen estimates of anywhere from five to nine months, which means mask wearing, social distancing, etc. will be with us for quite a while, and normality may not return until mid to late 2021. We can take some comfort, however, in the fact that the death rate from COVID-19 is well below 1% plus only about 20% of those who test positive for it get symptoms. Obstacles As Learning It’s Saturday night in December and I am home preparing my class to teach on Sunday. For the past 11 years I have taught a Sunday yoga class and it has become a beloved class to teach. Getting the knack of catching ourselves, of gently and compassionately catching ourselves is the path of the warrior. We catch ourselves one zillion times as once again, whether we like it or not, we harden into resentment, into a sense of relief, a sense of inspiration.” May each and every one of you use this time to strengthen and learn from these lessons as the path itself. Let us not go back to our old ways of taking things for granted. Live not solely for yourself but rather live for all of humanity. Walker Hornung Keeps the Music ‘Sacred’ Despite Lockdowns By Katie McFadden
The coronavirus pandemic may have put most live performances on pause, but for singer-songwriter Walker Hornung, he’s been using the downtime as an opportunity to focus on all things sacred—love and songwriting. Last month, Walker and the Brotherhood of the Grape released their latest album, “A Sacred Thing,” and keeping busy as a bee, they’re already nearing completion of their next album, “Beekeeper,” set to be released in the coming year. The longtime Queens musician didn’t know that his last local gig at RBQ on March 14, would be one of his last for the year, as coronavirus swept the nation and put most live music on lockdown, but for Hornung, the music never stopped. “With the downtime, I’ve been in the studio working and recording as much as possible,” Hornung said. “Some people have been in the doldrums and haven’t been able to get much accomplished. So often you hear people say, ‘if I had the time, I’d do this,’ but it’s either, you’re gonna do it or you’re not. I wrote songs when I had three young children. I put out an album three weeks after Hurricane Sandy with all the bands in Queens. When things get hard, the way to cope and deal is to revert to what I do best and what is familiar and that, to me, is songwriting.” The outcome has been a surplus of new music. Hornung used the time to pick up on an album he started in 2018. The result is “A Sacred Thing,” a rock album released by Walker and the Brotherhood of the Grape on November 3, featuring 12 tracks that reflect that optimistic vibe that Hornung has tried to maintain since stages were shut down in mid-March. The positivity immediately comes through in the first track, “It’s O.K. (To be Happy),” which takes a different turn from the songs Hornung typically pens. “I often write sad music. It’s just what comes out. I’m a big believer in not forcing things, but I have a tendency to
write about sadder situations and I said I wanted to make a conscious effort to write a little more upbeat and ‘It’s O.K. (To be Happy) seemed like a logical stepping stone into that,” Hornung said. The album name, “A Sacred Thing” comes from a song by the same name. Hornung felt the name was a fitting representation of the album as a whole. “Generally, most of the things I write are basic human emotions like love and loss and this record is no different, but I leaned more toward the love side of things and to me those are things that you shouldn’t mess with. Songwriting and love, to me, are sacred things and that was the best representation for this record. I believe in music like some people believe in religion. It is my religion. It’s the band-aid when you cut yourself and the soundtrack to everything you do,” he said. One of record’s love songs is a duet with Rockaway’s own Tiffany Lyons, who Hornung has performed with on local stages, including at Rockstock and Barrels, the annual skate and music fest, which he coordinates the music acts for. Hornung says he hadn’t recorded a duet since the ‘90s but wanted to bring on Lyons for a track called, “Let’s Do it Again.” “Our voices sound nice together and I think she did a wonderful

job. She’s a great singer and a pleasure to work with,” Hornung said. For this album, in addition to his bandmates, Eddy Joe, Greg Holt, Roger Mascetti and Ed Klinger, Hornung also collaborated with Kevin Armstrong (David Bowie, Iggy Pop), Paul Cuddeford (Ian Hunter, Holy Holy), Alex Greenspan (St.Ax), Chris Citarrella, Frank Persico (local solo artist), Florence Sabeva (Earl Slick, Steve Norman of Spandau Ballet), Robert Rizzo (Pops Rizzo Band) and Terry Edwards (Scapegoats, P.J. Harvey). However, his personal favorite track on the album is another featuring Lyons, “Turn it Up (Radio Love),” as Hornung says the track falls more in line with the sound he’s going for. “As much as I love rock and roll, I live for soul music. My ultimate goal is to sing soul and ‘Turn It Up’ is the closest I’ve come to sounding the way I want to sound. I have a scatterbrain and I move in and out of different genres, from soca to reggae and avant-garde, but for me, the ultimate goal is to write a great soul ballad,” Hornung said. “This song runs a little longer than your average pop hit, but it’s definitely where I feel most comfortable singing and most comfortable lyrically.” “A Sacred Thing” dropped on November 3 on all digital platforms and Hornung hopes

But more importantly he says, “all you can ask for is for people to give it a chance.” He also hopes that this holiday season, people consider purchasing Walker and the Brotherhood of the Grape’s Christmas album, “Bar-Humbug.” Although made in 2003, the album features classic Christmas hits that never get old and more importantly, every penny made from the album, is donated to various cancer charities. In the meantime, Hornung is already hard at work, putting together the next album, “Beekeeper.” “I always have albums in the lineup, but I’m literally drowning in my own music now, so I started another Brotherhood record with producer, RJ Puckhaber of Breezy Point. We had done a record together in 2017 and he’s gonna produce this next record that we’ve already tracked 12 songs for, so now we’re in the stages of finishing the recording,” Hornung said. He expects “Beekeeper” to be released in February. While live performances are few and far between for Hornung, people will get to hear some of the new music during a virtual adaptation of the annual South Queens Ball, which will be held at the VFW in Broad Channel on January 23 and recorded for a cable TV show. And who ever had the time to sit down and actually have a conversation with them? We ran from one calamity to the other and tried to learn as much as we could from each patient’s catastrophe. So much to learn, so little time. Once in practice, though, I found that my relationships with my patients were what got me out of bed in the middle of the night if they needed me. These folks entrusted me with their lives, and I wanted to get to know them and their family members as well as possible. best treat a person, not just an illness. In return, my patients gifted me with personal histories, family stories, bad jokes, and a type of personal intimacy that is a rare privilege. I read once about the beneficial effect of human touch. I never failed to touch a patient’s hand, to dry their tears, or to give them some of me. I smiled at their triumphs and, at times, mourned their losses. But I never failed to treat them as I had once been treated. I no longer actively practice, and I don’t miss the midnight phone calls, the hospital penny-pinchers, or the business of medicine, but God, how I miss my patients. The takeaway here is that all of us, even us physicians, become patients at some point, and I learned long ago that treating a person with kindness, caring, and empathy goes a long way. I grew up in Bayswater and it was a great place to grow up. Spent the summer days at the beach on 25th Street with my family. Far Rockaway had just about anything you needed. Only went to the Five Towns for Jans and Baskin Robbins, otherwise there was no reason to go anywhere else. I left Far Rockaway to find my future in Manhattan. About two and a half years ago, I decided to return to the beach and found a nice apartment with a balcony overlooking the beach on 26th Street. Since then, there has been over a dozen incidents of gun fire on my block. It's a special day when you can walk down Beach 26th Street and not see a discarded stained mattress while walking through a mine field of dog droppings. During the summer, you are lucky if your A/C can drown out the immature adults that the city dumps in our communities, who spend their days sitting on their decks with loud speakers turned all the way up, forcing us to listen to what music they want, that is until the police finally show
up. It only takes less than five percent of the residents of any block to make it uncomfortable for the other 95%. Unfortunately, the city administration’s desire to build affordable housing is very short-sighted when it comes to having a viable social service network available to handle the troubled families that can go hand in hand with families facing temporary or years of financial misfortunes. Destroying blocks with violence, rubbish and noise isn't helpful. The Rockaway boardwalk cost $140 million and the beach reclamation is running into 350-400 million dollars, yet the streets in the 30s, including the lot allocated for beach visitors, are a filthy embarrassment. The Sanitation Department that is responsible for Far Rockaway is a failure. They would turn around at my building three times a week and back up within feet of an overflowing city garbage can that they never would touch. I would have to send monthly emails to our former Councilman Richards’ office to have
Page 39 the cans emptied. The police are overworked; the Sanitation Department just goes through the motions. There is no strong city social service network in Far Rockaway and if it wasn't for the Greek Council, Far Rockaway would never be cleaned. The city's answer: build huge apartment buildings with 2,000 affordable units, but don't worry we'll build a gym. Reminds me of a queen who felt that if you let them eat cake, everything will be fine, but it wasn't. My hat’s off to those behind the brewery project, finally Far Rockaway will have a place off the boardwalk/beach where food would be suitable for human consumption. Good luck for those sticking it out. I am glad that other states haven't all wasted the beach like New York City did with Far Rockaway and I've found a nice quiet respectful affordable beach community in New Jersey! Harvey Brownstein

Results from the WWE Raw Show on December 7, 2020 from the WWE Thunderdome in the Amway Center, Orlando, Florida Asuka defeated Shayna Baszler. Dana Brooke & Ricochet defeated Retribution. Kofi Kingston defeated Shelton Benjamin. Cedric Alexander defeated Kofi Kingston. AJ Styles, John Morrison & The Miz defeated Drew McIntyre & Sheamus. Bobby Lashley defeated Jeff Hardy. Bray Wyatt versus Randy Orton ended in a No Contest. The Match of the Night was Asuka versus Shayna Baszler. It's no secret that Asuka and Shayna Baszler are two of my favorite wrestlers and this match did not disappoint. The match
was nice and stiff with hard shots and great back and forth action. In Wrestling News: WWE Superstars Becky Lynch and Seth Rollins have recently announced the birth of their first child "Roux." We here at Wrestle Talk send our congratulations and best wishes to the newest member of their family. Recently, CM Punk appeared on Renee Young's new podcast called "Oral Sessions," where he spoke about what would it take for him to return back to wrestling and he stated, "A lot of money and a fun storyline." If this is the case, who would offer him the better bargain, AEW or the WWE??? It appears that both AEW and the WWE are very interested in potentially signing former Impact World Champion Tessa Blanchard. As reported by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, any moves to sign her will like-
ly happen once the pandemic is over as she is currently living in Mexico. A new update has re-surfaced about former WWE Superstar Eva Marie's potential return to the company. As confirmed by PWInsider, Eva Marie is indeed listed on the WWE's roster internally, which means she has resigned with the company. She has also reportedly been seen training at the WWE's Performance Center. According to the WWE, there will be no live Smackdown Show on December 25, Christmas Day. The show will be pretaped so that the wrestlers will be off to spend the holiday with their families. The question of the week comes from Melissa H. in Rockaway Park and she asked, "Is there a possibility of seeing AEW run a show in Madison
Square Garden?" Yes, there is a strong possibility of All Elite Wrestling running live shows at Madison Square Garden once the pandemic is over. In past years, New Japan Pro Wrestling and Ring of Honor have held shows in the Garden, so in my opinion, there's no reason why AEW would not hold a show there unless they were not interested.
