Mission Accomplished
A veteran has been reunited with an irreplaceable belonging. Last week during an intensely windy day, Jacqueline Cozza found a wind victim on the side of her home on the beach block of Beach 127th Street. An old, worn, beige United States Marine Corps hat. She knew someone would be missing it, especially after turning it over and finding the brim inscribed with important dates and information—everything but a name.
Cozza left the hat on her porch for a few days, hoping someone looking for it would find it, but to no avail. After speaking with neighbors, Cozza posted photos of the precious belonging to various local Facebook pages in hopes of finding its owner. The post was shared more than 300 times. It would be the daughter of a neighbor a few doors down who recognized the writing on the hat. After showing her parents the post, the father realized it belonged to the man who lived above them, Mr. Foti. On Tuesday, November 24, the neighbor picked up the hat to return it to Mr. Foti. “I’m happy I posted it and we were able to get it back to him,” Cozza said.

CB14 VOTES ON ARVERNE EAST PROJECT On Sunday, November 22, Community Board 14 met for a special meeting to vote on land use issues regarding the Arverne East proposal and nature preserve. During the November 17 CB14 meeting, the board was divided on the proposal for the Arverne East development, so they decided to present a list of their concerns to the Edgemere Civic Association for their approval before the official vote, which was rescheduled for November 22. Sunday’s meeting revolved around two items: 1) a zoning map and text amendment to establish a new mixed use district MX-21, and a zoning map amendment from a C4-4 to a MX-21 to allow for the development of a 10,000 sq. ft. Microbrewery and a 5,000 sq. ft. Tap house on Beach 35th Street and 2) an Urban Development Action Area Project(UDAAP) designation of the project area to facilitate the development of a 35-acre nature preserve.
CB14 presented 18 conditions. The first was for the city to conduct a study to widen the traffic lanes along Rockaway Beach Blvd./ Edgemere Ave. from Beach 62nd to Seagirt Blvd. to accommodate additional traffic the project may bring. Others included a new elementary school, a preference for 50% of CB14 residents to occupy residential units and 30% to occupy commercial units, a preference for home ownership over rentals, increased parking around the proposed nature preserve and commercial units and more. A vote was held on the motion to oppose the ULURP for the Special Manufacturing District MX-21 unless the 18 conditions were met. The board voted 18 Yes and 7 No. For the UDAAP issue, the board also voted on a motion of No with conditions, with 26 voting Yes and one, No. The application now goes to the Queens Borough President’s office for review.

Talking Turkey with Mike Scala By Katie McFadden
‘Tis the season of giving and on Tuesday, November 24, Mike Scala, an attorney from Howard Beach who was aspirations for another run at City Council in District 32, helped to do his part by providing turkeys and more to families in need ahead of Thanksgiving. Earlier this month, Scala, who serves as an attorney for several organizations that helped to launch a food pantry in Ozone Park during the coronavirus pandemic, realized that the need would extend to the holidays. Wanting to fulfill that need, Scala consulted with the Campaign Finance Board to come up with an effort that would both support his potential campaign and do something good. For every $40 donated to his campaign this month, he bought a turkey and all the fixin’s to give to those in need. “No pun intended, but we hit two birds with one
stone,” Scala joked. The idea was a success. Scala was able to raise enough to provide 75 turkeys to families. After seeking requests through local social media pages and the app for the Waterside School in Rockaway Park, Scala was able to connect with several families in need across District 32. On Tuesday, November 24, he enlisted the help of Torey Schnupp, who he has worked
together closely with in the legal battle against the homeless shelter on Beach 101st Street. Scala and Schnupp spent the day delivering food to those on their list and then set up shop outside of the Waterside School’s yard, for those who preferred to come pick up their turkeys. “People are suffering. We started the food pantry during Covid, but the need isn’t just a result of Covid when you’re
seeing over 1,000 a week come for food,” Scala said. “We’re happy to serve the people and this is a good way of doing it. This is what public service is about and I strive to be the best public servant I can be. People are so grateful, and it warms your heart, but you also feel bad that there’s such a need. I’m hoping once Covid is over, this good spirit of giving will continue, and people will get the resources they need.”

Far Rockaway Colts Help Keep Families Fulfilled for Thanksgiving By Katie McFadden
The Far Rockaway Colts rose up to ensure families across the city have a good Thanksgiving in this trying year. After a week of distributing turkeys to families across the five boroughs, on Friday, November 20, they saved the best for last, stopping in Rockaway for their final turkey giveaway. Teaming up with NYPD Community Affairs, the NYPD Detectives’ Endowment Association and with sponsorship by the New York Giants and Stop and Shop, Rockaway’s mentorship program made up of NYPD officers, the Far Rockaway Colts, spent all of last week giving away turkeys to those who need it most in time for Thanksgiving. Starting at One Police Plaza in Manhattan on Monday, November 16, and stopping at 11 different locations across each borough each day through Friday, the organization was able to distribute more than 2,000 turkeys. “We got over 2,000 turkeys, so if they’re each feeding families of five, families of 10, that’s a lot of people. That’s about 20,000 people in New York City, so there’s going to be a lot of families that are going to be happy for the holidays,” Detective Patrick Blanc, or “Coach Pat,” or the Far Rockaway Colts said at Friday’s giveaway that took place outside of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church on Beach 86th Street. The Far Rockaway Colts have been making waves through its program that provides mentorship, educational help and an outlet to play football to local youth who need assistance, while bridging the gap between the community and the NYPD. Helping families ahead of Thanksgiving during a particularly rough year was an expansion of their mission. “We already have the pandemic going on. A lot of families can’t really go outside, can’t go shopping, some lost family members due to the pandemic and we said we had to do it,” Detective Blanc said. “A lot of families are no longer working due to the pandemic, so the best way to let them know we care is to provide
turkeys for them.” With the help of tenant association presidents, the Colts went to various housing developments to identify families in need and provide vouchers
to redeem turkeys at the giveaways. Locally, that included the Hammels, Edgemere and Redfern Houses. However, extra turkeys were also distributed to people who came out
to the event on Friday, even if they didn’t have a voucher. To make the event even more fun, the NYPD had a DJ spinning tunes while people waited on line to collect turkeys, and even DJ Magic of Hot 97 came out to show his support. “This has been a hard year, so I want to be one of the ones who brings some good light and energy to people,” DJ Magic said. Many came out to make sure the event ran smoothly, including officers from Rockaway’s local police precincts, members of the St. John’s Home for Boys and more. Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato, who has shown her support for the Far Rockaway Colts since the program launched, was also one of the many on hand to help load turkeys into people’s bags and carts during the giveaway. “Today’s event went great because the Far Rockaway Colts and the rest of the NYPD have created a bond in this community and people come to them. There’s a need for food and people come for that need, but I’m watching how many people know our local officers and know the Colts and that’s what it’s all about. Everybody wants the best for the community so to watch the kids who know these officers come up and hug them, is really beautiful. We’re really fortunate to have this, it’s the only program like it in the city. And it's a perfect day out in Rockaway,” Assemblywoman Pheffer Amato said. Reports say he’s trying to get $20,000 per day for his lawyering. We’re guessing he might have to hire a lawyer to try and collect that money. ***** Speaking of Giuliani, his old political rival David Dinkins died this week at the age of 93. Dinkins was mayor when New York was, let’s face it, the pits. He was a nice man who

It’s been more like a bird coop for the past decade or more. Maybe something will happen with it now that it is listed with a new broker (others have tried). The building, a tear down for sure, is listed for sale at $3,688,000. The new condos across the street are nearing completion. If they sell quickly, that will probably signal a developer to scoop up “The Lawrence.” Baxter’s Hotel, right next door, has remained closed since the Department of Buildings issued a vacate order last January because of a sewer system issue. The owner, John Baxter, tells us he is in court with a neighbor on Beach 115th Street who he says caused the damage. With courts being tied up during the pandemic, this might not be resolved for a while.

A Thank You to the Beach 124th Garden Helpers Dear Editor: The following is my thank you letter to our block. This year we got our Beach 124th block garden going, and I wish to thank you all. Starting with the souls that were hands on for daily watering, planting and general upkeep. While Rockaway enjoyed days and weeks of sunshine, Pat) were out there, sometimes our Garden Gnomes (Allison, before sunrise, doing their Kathy, Cathy and Bobby and thing. We often left the garden as soaked as the flowers we watered, with the summer heat and humidity. The rare day it rained was Christmas for whose ever job it was to water that day and prompted texts of jealousy from the other Gnomes. We also had some behind the scenes Worker Bees (Mark and Stephanie) who quietly and with great labor produced our garden flag and donation request forms (at their own expense). The flag construction done with such craftmanship. Your eye is drawn to it the second you
hit the beach block. And of course, our garden wouldn't be complete without all of you, Our Garden Butterflies. You flit around the garden, going to the beach, riding your bikes or hovering overtop on the boardwalk. Always with kind words of appreciation and encouragement. Your generous donations allowed our aquatic artistic expression to surface (yellow submarine, tee hee) and flourish.
This garden doesn't exist without each and every one of you and I hope through it, we surpassed your expectations and fulfilled the responsibility bestowed on us. Lastly, I'd like to thank my husband Bill, My Dream Maker, who sculpted the Seahorse and who is tasked with bringing my ideas to life and to a level that always surprises. Rocco Strong Hockey Tournament Raises $6k+ By Katie McFadden
Hockey players were rolling Rocco Strong on Sunday as they played in an all-day tournament that resulted in $6,200 raised for Broad Channel’s Rocco Pisani as he battles leukemia. On Sunday, November 22, eight teams took to the hockey rink on Beach 109th near the boardwalk to play in a Rockaway Hockey League tournament organized by Johnny Wagner, Bryan Elfant and Bobby Keane, all for 11-year-old Rocco, who has been an inspiration through his cancer battle. “It was a great day,” Wagner
said after the event. The weather held out just long enough for us to finish the tourney and we raised over $6,000 for Rocco!” The tournament garnered plenty of support from Rockaway and Broad Channel locals and beyond. Even professional NHL team, the Vancouver Canucks caught wind of it and their young stars, Zack MacEwen and Thatcher Demko sent videos of support for Rocco, wishing him well and telling him to keep fighting, ahead of Sunday’s tournament. Locally, neighbors showed up to the tournament to cheer the teams on. “Over 150 people

showed up. People from all over Rockaway, Brooklyn and Long Island,” Wagner said. Masks were given out and social distancing was encouraged to help
nations towards the cause. The FDNY hockey team, made up of firefighters who play other city agencies, made a $500 donation and hockey brand Black Biscuit,
keep spectators safe. During the event, raffles were held, resulting in $3,000 raised, plus another $1,000 for t-shirt and koozies with the #RoccoStrong hashtag and Rocco’s own jersey number, 22, that were sold on Sunday. Each player contributed with their registration fees to play in the tournament. Some organizations made additional do-
donated $500 as well as hockey t-shirts and equipment. The event was all for Rocco, who even made a brief appearance during the event. “Thank you so much for the hockey fundraiser. It’s so cool to have so much support,” Rocco said on his Instagram page (fitnessforlife07) on Sunday. At the end of the day, Johnny Wagner’s and Bryan Elfant’s teams made it to the final round, and with a 5-1 win, Elfant’s team took home the championship. Wagner says the money raised from the event will be given to the Pisani family the weekend after Thanksgiving.

Domestic Violence, Crime Stats & More Highlighted at 100 PCT Meeting By Katie McFadden
The latest 100th Precinct Community Council meeting was chock full of valuable information and updates, including the latest crime stats from the NYPD’s 100th Precinct. At a Zoom meeting that was pushed up a week due to the Thanksgiving holiday, on Wednesday, November 18, 100th Precinct Community Council President Kathy Heavey introduced the guests at the meeting and then thanked everyone for their support in making the council’s recent Thanksgiving food drive a success. The first speaker, Linda Ruiz, then spoke about CERT, the Community Emergency Response Team, and all the program has to offer. Ruiz explained that CERT trains civilians how to work with first responders and serve as a bridge before first responders arrive to an emergency situation. From navigating traffic to keeping an area safe, to evacuating people from a dangerous situation and more, CERT allows civilians to take basic skills and enhance them. Training for this all-volunteer program is conducted by the FDNY, along with the help of the NYPD and EMS. Ruiz hopes to start a team of local CERT members. For more information, reach out to Ruiz at LindaRuiz7@aol.com. In response to the recent domestic violence incident that led to the murder of Danielle Marrano in Rockaway Park, Heavey invited Sgt. Stephen Meszaros and Officer Yolando Johnson of the 100th Precinct Domestic Violence Unit to speak about what they do. “We are a service-based unit. Our role is to prevent domestic violence through targeted enforcement,” Sgt. Meszaros said. The unit maintains active cases of domestic incidents reported to the precinct, follows up on reports, does casework and provides information about resources for victims such as counseling,
legal help, information about shelters and more. According to the officers, despite the pandemic, reported domestic violence is on a downward trend this year, although there was an uptick during the height of the pandemic. The DV officers are available seven days a week from 8 a.m. to midnight and can be reached by calling 718318-4251 or 718-318-4250. Next up, Captain Carlos Fabara provided the latest crime stats in the 100th Precinct. According to Fabara, rapes are down to zero vs. three the same period last year. Murders are up by two compared to zero during the same period last year. Robberies are up two from zero. “One is in regard to a shooting incident and there was an arrest in that case, and a domestic violence robbery that is close to arrest,” Fabara said. Felony assaults are up to 20 vs. nine in the same period last year. Almost half are domestic violence related and are close to arrest. There was an increase in felony assaults on police, from two vs. zero. “This is indicative of our officers being out front and engaging in these situations and I’m happy to report that both officers are doing fine and are expected to make a full recovery,” Fabara said. Burglaries are up to five vs. two last year, four of which were residential and one commercial. Grand larcenies are down 65% and grand larceny auto is down 75%. Fabara mentioned recent gun arrests including three arrested on Beach Channel Drive and Beach 62nd Street, resulting in the recovery of a 9mm pistol. Also, the night prior to the meeting, the NYPD’s field intelligence team conducted a search warrant and arrested three in the Hammels Houses. Two firearms were recovered during this operation. “That was another great effort with great results by our team,” Fabara said. The floor was then opened to questions for the Captain. Eugene Falik started off by ask-
ing about a report in which officers did not stop drivers who had their license plates covered during a Trump car rally last month. Fabara responded to this saying, “It was very peaceful. There were some vehicles with license plates covered. My understanding is they were fearful of being doxxed. Irrespective of that, in a case where we have protests, we have to manage those. This was a mobile protest and not every small violation can be enforced in that case. In this case, I think the best thing for us to do was to let that occur and let them move out of the precinct because the sooner they moved out of the precinct, the less chance we had of an incident occurring. We had a counter protest that we were worried about, but everything worked out fine. It’s not unusual in some situations for small level offenses to be prioritized at a lower level than other situations that may arise. We’re not going to have all of our officers engaged in stopping a large caravan when that could end up exacerbating the situation or causing friction. It’s best to let them make their political statement and move on.” Elizabeth Gatto then thanked the captain for the precinct’s quick response to a large group of teens that have been drinking, urinating, screaming and causing weekly disturbances near the beach wall and street on Beach 126th Street. “I have to commend your officers. They came immediately, responded, kept coming back and dismantled the group. They’re a tough group of maybe 50 16/17 years old. Neighbors have been called names and threatened and this response was really
appreciated,” she said. Fabara thanked her for the acknowledgement and said, “I understand they’re young and don’t mean harm, but if they’re creating disturbances to the community, then we’re going to take enforcement actions.” Trishia Bermudez and other residents brought up an issue of traffic confusion around Beach 59th to Beach 62nd Street, ever since the traffic direction has been flipped on Beach 61st and 60th last week. The change is causing confusion and Bermudez expressed fear that with people not paying attention to signage or disregarding it, a fatality may occur. The issue broke out into a heated discussion. The captain assured her that there will be increased enforcement in this area as drivers adjust to the change. Deputy Inspector Ronald McCall of Transit District 23 was then invited to speak but had some good news. “We don’t have any crime for the 28-day period,” he said. McCall added that the Transit District has been working closely with the 100th Precinct to ensure subways and ground transportation are safe and they’ve been working to address quality of life issues. The meeting ended with a special Thanksgiving prayer led by Rev. Joyce Duggar of First Congregational Church. Tips for Having 'The Talk' with Seniors By Nancy J. Brady
Conversations about estate planning, aging and mortality can be difficult, emotional topics to discuss, however, having these conversations is essential for every family. Holiday visits when loved ones are together can present opportunities to begin to broach these topics. Unless you’re certain your parents have an up-to-date Will, Power of Attorney documents, and a wider plan for what should happen in the event of their passing, you shouldn’t assume everything will be taken care of. According to recent surveys, less than half of Americans have done estate planning, or a Last Will and Testament. If a parent dies without a Last Will and Tes-
tament, or beneficiary designations on financial assets, (known as “intestate”), such a situation could lead to added emotional strain and stress. And it could have unintended financial implications for all their children or other family members. The following tips can help facilitate discussion of these hard topics thoroughly and respectfully to prepare for the future. 1. Plan What You Can Discussing estate planning and all it entails is not something that should happen without any planning. Make a list of topics and questions, then let your parents know what you want to chat about with them. If possible, set a time and date and choose a private venue that everyone will feel comfort-
able in. Be aware that you may need to schedule a few conversations as there could be too much to cover in one sitting. Remember to use language that’s respectful and supportive, and to take a breather if emotions run high or the stress becomes overwhelming. 2. Identify Key People There are several key people you may need to contact for estate planning purposes. Ask your parents for the names and contact details of their doctors, attorneys, financial planner, accountant, insurance broker, clergy, closest friends. Look at their address book and update all addresses and telephone numbers. 3. Address the Topic of a Will Determine whether there is

an existing Will in place and whether the document is up to date. If a Will was created more than five years ago, suggest that your parents review the Will to make sure it’s still a reflection of their wishes. Establish where they keep the document and confirm who they’ve appointed as the executor/s. The same goes for any trust that may have been created. 4. Talk About Power of Attorney Find out whether your parents have appointed someone to manage their financial and other affairs during their lifetimes, especially if they become incapacitated. Their estate plan will be incomplete without these directives, so it’s important to include them. The appointment of a health care proxy who can make medical decisions for your parents if they become incapable of making those decisions themselves. A Living Will that provides direction to the health care proxy about what type of care should be administered or withheld in end of life situations. The Living Will should specifically address cardiopulmonary resuscitation, mechanical ventilation, artificial feeding and hydration, administration of antibiotics, and pain relief measures.
6. Ask About Insurance Policies Talk about the type of insurance policies in place, including health insurance, life insurance, homeowner’s insurance, long term care insurance and worker’s compensation or disability insurance. If you haven’t already done so, take note of the names and contact details of the insurance brokers. Check where the policy documents are kept, and if possible, make certified copies of them. 7. Request Access to Tax Returns It can be helpful to know where tax return paperwork is stored. It may be necessary to have copies of returns for up to five years if your parent(s) require government benefits to finance their medical long-term care. These documents may be required after death if the administration of your parents’ estate becomes complicated. Confirm where you can find these documents
and that they’re all up to date. 8. Discuss All Other Practicalities In addition to subjects such as power of attorney and insurance, there are several other practicalities you should include in your conversations. Make a list of their accounts – financial accounts such as bank and mutual fund, credit accounts, and store accounts. Talk about the memorial service they want and whether they want to be buried, cremated, or some other option. Discuss whether they have prepaid funeral arrangements, or if they care to do so. Conclusion Estate planning conversations are tough no matter how you tackle them. Try your best to be patient with your parents and transparent with other family members about what you’re doing. If you have siblings, invite them to be part of the
Page 23 conversation. Accept that these talks can take time and avoid placing pressure on those involved to get it all done in a few hours. The smaller details are critical and should not be rushed. Lastly, always consult an attorney if you’re unsure about the legal aspects or implications of any of the points mentioned above. A COVID Thanksgiving Today is Thanksgiving, a day traditionally meant for giving thanks for our blessings. For some of us, pausing to reflect on what we’re grateful for this year might be more challenging than it’s been in the past. But one thing we might want to include on our list is the technology, warts and all, that has allowed us to maintain some normalcy in our lives and has made social distancing tolerable. What would we do without Zoom and similar applications? Video conferencing platforms have enabled us to
continue working, have playdates, attend religious services, throw dinner parties, and otherwise socialize from our homes. While Zoom was recently under investigation by both the Federal Trade Commission and NY Attorney General (and has since signed agreements to clean up its privacy and security practices), and nobody will ever look at Jeffrey Toobin the same way, the benefits that video conferencing platforms are providing are huge. While brick-andmortar stores have suffered huge declines, and businesses small and large including iconic ones like Lord & Taylor and Neiman Marcus have experienced closures and bankruptcies, e-commerce has been “at the forefront of retail.” What would we have done during lockdown without groceries, toilet paper, and root touch-up kits delivered to our doorsteps by our delivery heroes? Recently, contact tracing apps have come into use as a way to fight the virus on a widescale basis. For decades, contact tracing had been a manual, labor-intensive infectious disease control measure employed by public health personnel as a key strategy to identify and prevent the growth of potential “hot spots” and disease spread. Tracing apps enable much greater scalability, thereby increasing the efficiency of tracers’ work. (Reminder: check out a tracing app’s privacy practices before you sign up.) There have been many other technological developments,
The Rockaway Times like “ed tech,” online educational services that have made it possible for our children to continue to learn remotely, and telehealth, which has allowed us to go to the doctor remotely. Services like Teleparty (formerly Netflix Party) and Houseparty even enable us to watch TV or go to the movies remotely with friends, or to “hang out” in groups online. But perhaps the most meaningful use of technology during the pandemic was and continues to be the use of cellphones which, during the darkest days that unfortunately still continue, allow terminally ill patients to say their final good-byes to loved ones who cannot be with them during their last moments on earth. So while 2020 has been hideous, I will take the time this year during my Thanksgiving (Zoom) celebration to give thanks, as usual, for health and my loved ones, the vaccine that is finally coming into sight, and yes, for the (imperfect) internet and the technology that has enabled so much.

A week before Thanksgiving, some Far Rockaway families lost their homes to fire. On Wednesday, November 18, a massive fire broke out in a seven-story apartment building on New Haven Avenue and Beach 22nd Street. The fire destroyed four apartments and injured four people, but miraculously, there were no casualties. Firefighters quickly responded to the scene at 22-11 New Have Avenue after 8:30 p.m. and helped residents out of the building as the fire raged
on the fifth floor. At least 100 firefighters responded and worked for two hours to get the fire under control. Dozens of people had to evacuate and at least two people had to be rescued from the building. Those who were injured faced injuries that were not life-threatening. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The New York American Red Cross responded to the scene to assist the families that were displaced by the fire.

My house is all autumnal and we will start the Christmas decorations this weekend. I am very lucky to have a group of both old and new friends who live all around me. From book clubs, to Christmas in July to Friendsgiving, we al-
ways have such a great time. I texted one of my friends this morning and she responded with exactly the comment I needed. A huge shout out to my friends who keep me off of the ledge all the time. I am also super thankful to my work friends, especially this year. I did not have Google classroom when we went remote in May and the younger teachers have really been there for me trying to assist me in my remote teaching journey. al readers, you know I often write about my father. I feel he is a bit of a local legend. I was once describing him to someone new to the area and they asked me, “Is he the man who always wears the veteran hats?� I said: “Yes, yes he is.� Someone recently sent me a picture of him from the Harbor Light and when I told him, he responded that he was not aware someone took his pic and that he was contacting his lawyer! My family: I am very lucky to have a great family. My daughters are super good to me and both drive, so I can boss them around to do chores for me and drive me places. My husband is busy preparing Thanksgiving dinner and a friend was surprised to see him at Stop and Shop doing the shopping and not me. (It was probably his first time in Stop and Shop in a while.) WISH of Rockaway: I am lucky to be part of this amazing non-profit organization. We are able to pay it forward to so many people in our town and it makes me proud to be just a

Operation Warp Speed Has Been Speedy

The mainstream media is so hopelessly anti-Trump that they are loath to report on any successes of the Trump administration, which is why Operation Warp Speed (OWS) is rarely mentioned by the press. If it is mentioned, the reporting covers only the creation of a vaccine for COVID-19. But OWS is so much more. Starting earlier this year (May 15), after the appearance of the coronavirus, the administration created OWS. It is an effort by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Defense, in partnership with the private sector, to provide financial investment, scientific support, regulatory expertise, and logistical assistance to deliver vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics for SARS-CoV-2 to the American public as quickly as possible. One of the main goals has been to create and deliver substantial quantities of safe and effective
vaccines by early next year. Consider that the creation of a vaccine normally takes at least five years yet OWS was able to do it in about eight months, a herculean achievement. In addition, OWS also aims to combat this virus by improving the use of existing therapies and providing additional treatment options, as well as improving diagnostic testing for the virus, thereby ameliorating the pandemic as we wait for the U.S. population to be fully immunized. In contrast to the opinions of Gov. Cuomo, OWS has made the use of sound science essential. Researchers are constantly evaluating potential therapeutics and have involved government agencies including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). OWS also sought manufacturability at scale within the desired time frame, making hundreds of thousands of vaccine doses achievable by late this year. OWS researchers used novel techniques
to evaluate potential treatments for the virus. For example, rather than create new antiviral medications from scratch, they looked at using existing antiviral medications that are used to treat other viral illnesses to treat COVID-19. A case in point is remdesivir, an antiviral medication used to treat the Ebola virus. Using this technique, researchers were able to shorten the time needed to study the medications. Since remdesivir was already in use with a known safety profile, they were able to skip phase 1 trials, which test safety of a treatment, and proceed directly to phase 2 and 3 trials, which test effectiveness. OWS researchers also looked at biological treatments for COVID including convalescent plasma (which I discussed in a previous column) and hyperimmune globulin. Plasma has limitations, such as blood-type compatibility, a narrow therapeutic window, and an inability to be used on large populations. Hyperimmune globulin, which contains antibodies to the virus and is made from convalescent plasma, does not have
these limitations and can be given by injection, as opposed to the intravenous route required for plasma. Other antibody and biological products have been developed in conjunction with well known private pharmaceutical companies including SAb Biotherapies, Regeneron, Eli Lilly, Astra Zeneca, and Merck, to name a few. OWS has not only been able to develop a vaccine in remarkable time, but with therapeutics they have been able to make significant inroads against the virus while waiting for the vaccine to be fully deployed. All this means that the mortality rate from the virus has dropped considerably, to well below 1%. Not since the time of FDR at the onset of WWII has there been such a rapid and successful cooperation between government and private industry to fight a common enemy. Live Fully Mary Oliver, the poet who died last year at the age of 83, often inspires me to live life fully and say yes more often than no. The following quote gave me so much joy. “When it’s over, I want to say: all my life I was a bride married to amazement. I was the bridegroom, taking the world into my arms. When it’s over, I don’t want to wonder if I have made of my life something particular, and real. I don’t want to find myself sighing and frightened, or full of argument. I don’t want to end up simply having visited this world.”
Choosing to live our lives well can be very difficult during these times but perhaps we can decide to live from a place of gratitude. It is from this place that so many positive emotions grow such as joy, happiness, contentment and acceptance. I believe if Mary Oliver were alive today, she would continue to write beautiful poems about our precious earth and this one crazy life we have to live. Many do not have the opportunity or ability to live a full life with all the restrictions in place to protect one another. What if the silver lining was to
recognize we have the most incredible world to live in and we learn to become more mindful of the sufferings of others? It is the season of giving. How can we be of service to those in need? I am at a loss of the fear paralyzing so many people to live a full life. When I go to church, I am comforted by the sermons from our wonderful priests at SFDS. Thank you, Father Jim and Father Bill. You are truly saints who inspired us to keep going. Stay on the path. The obstacle is the course. I pray they don’t close our house of worship that gives so much comfort to the parishioners. Life for us all is on hold temporarily, and yet, we have so much to be thankful for. Trust and have faith this too shall pass, and we will work together to heal as a country and world. Results from the WWE PPV "Survivor Series" on November 22, 2020 from the WWE Thunderdome in Orlando, Florida: The Miz won the Battle Royal. Team RAW defeated Team Smackdown. The Street Profits defeated The New Day. Bobby Lashley defeated Sami Zayn. Sasha Banks defeated Asuka. Team RAW Women defeated Team Smackdown Women. Roman Reigns defeated Drew McIntyre. The Match of the Night actually turns out to be the Moment of the Night as the Undertaker finally retires from the WWE. The Undertaker, a character portrayed by Mark Calaway, has had a glorious career in wrestling including a WrestleMania winning streak that is unmatched by anyone. What made The Undertaker such a great
character was his ability to make people believe in the stories he told. The Undertaker was a great storyteller. He had you holding on to every word he said and his ability to evolve the character throughout the years was nothing short of phenomenal. Thank you, Undertake,r for the many years of entertainment that you provided us! In Wrestling News: The WWE has apparently suspended Braun Strowman for an alleged altercation backstage with WWE producer Adam Pearce. It was reported by WWE Digital that Strowman took exception with Adam Pearce's plan for awarding a WWE Championship opportunity and lashed out at the WWE official by head butting him. At this time, WWE has officially suspended Braun Strowman for an indefinite period of time. WWE Superstar Aleister Black has not been seen recently on TV. His last match was on the October 12 edition of WWE Raw. Accord-
ing to Wrestling Observer Radio, Aleister Black has requested to return to the NXT Brand but it is unsure whether or not his request was granted. It was also noted that Aleister Black may not be on good terms with the WWE. We will keep you updated. It appears that IMPACT Wrestling has been offering generous contracts to former WWE stars. IMPACT officials apparently offered a massive contract to the Good Brothers following their WWE release. In addition, it has been noted that they have also offered a big contracts All Elite Wrestling stars. All Elite Wrestling has apparently signed the team of Top Flight (Darius and Dante Martin) to an AEW contract. The pair had a match on AEW's Dynamite show and made a great impression with the Young Bucks. I expect to see more of a spotlight being put on Top Flight pushing forward. The question of the week comes from Alex H. in Rockaway Park and
he asked, "I have to admit I used to be a WWE fan and throughout this year I feel that the product has gone downhill, what are your thoughts?" Well, Alex the WWE, just like other promotions were greatly affected by the pandemic. They had major layoffs and releases which affected their bottom line. But, in my opinion, the WWE has not done a great job with Talent Relations. For example, the WWE decided to restrict their talent from using third party accounts like Twitch, Cameo and Onlyfans which was an additional source of income for many wrestlers. The recent release of Zalena Vega has also added tensions between the WWE and the rest of the talent.
