A Covid-19 Halloween By Katie McFadden

All Hallow’s Eve is usually a big deal around here, but with the scariest thing about this year being Covid-19, things to do for Halloween are few and far between. Here is a rundown of some Halloween happenings around town. What’s up with trick or treating this year? General consensus says it’s up to parents. Some will allow their kids to go trick-or-treating, while others are playing it safe this year. As a general rule, there’s a good chance of candy being given out at homes that are decorated. Some have said they are taking Covid-19 precautions by leaving out bowls of candy this year, while others are getting creative with socially distant ways of distributing candy to kids. Some will be using masks, gloves and even tongs to distribute goodies and many are opting for treat bags this year. Others will be skipping this year as

a precaution. However, there are still many other ways to celebrate this weekend around town. They did the mash…it was a monster mash…for the kids! On Saturday, October 31, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Jamesons Pub on Beach 129th is hosting a Kids Monster Mash Party. For $25 per child, they get to enjoy a choice of breakfast, pumpkin decorating, “trick or treating” and more. Reservations are strongly recommended. Email jamesonspubrbny@gmail.com to RSVP.

This Halloween, consider doing a good deed while getting into the festivities with Hallo-Clean! Join in for a socially distanced beach cleanup from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, starting at Beach 86th and the boardwalk. Bags and gloves will be provided and costumes are strongly encouraged! Community service hours will be available to those who need them. This event is hosted by the Rockaway Beach Civic Association, the Heart of Rockaway civic and the American Littoral Society. The surf never stops in Rockaway, not even on Halloween. Instead, surfers suit up…in costumes. From 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Beach 97th Street, join SurfsUpNYLA for a Halloween Surf Party. No Boats About It By Katie McFadden

Some abandoned derelict boats around Jamaica Bay that have become eyesores are being addressed. On Friday, October 23, an old houseboat that washed up on a marshland near Broad Channel in Jamaica Bay more than two years ago, was finally removed as part of an NYC Cleanup Initiative, with funding secured from Councilman Eric Ulrich. Last Friday, the Rockaway Times joined Councilman Ulrich, Dan Mundy Sr. and Jr. of the Jamaica Bay Ecowatchers, representatives from the NYC Parks Department and others to observe a demonstration of one of many abandoned boats around the city, be removed by a tugboat operated by contractor Custom Marine. The latest action around Jamaica Bay was made possible by $55,000 in city taxpayer funding secured by Councilman Ulrich earlier this year. While the removals are nec-

essary, Councilman Ulrich emphasized that taxpayer money shouldn’t be necessary to do so. He hoped to send a message to deter boat owners from abandoning vessels in the future. “These boats are eyesores and people don’t realize that when they abandon them, they’re polluting our waters and causing millions of dollars in environmental damage to the bay. These are places where people live and where wildlife

it’s city taxpayer money that we’re using and it’s great that we’re cleaning this up, but we shouldn’t have to be here.” Nate Grove, Chief of Waterfront and Marine Operations at the NYC Parks Department, says through the NYC Cleanup Initiative, they’ve removed upwards of 300 vessels and 200 cubic yards of debris from the city’s lands and waterways over the past five years. About two dozen of those vessels have come from around Jamaica Bay and it is expected that there are at least 100 more around NYC that still await removal. Grove explained that people often cannot keep up with the costs of maintaining and insuring vessels, so many boat owners wind up jumping ship. The vessels being removed, depends on available funding, and the process isn’t cheap. “Without Council support, we wouldn't be here today, doing this great environmental clean-up that is going to help both better navigation, as well as mitigate environmental hazards,” Grove said. Prior to Friday’s removal, a great deal of prep work went into getting the houseboat ready for removal. This including patching up any holes, removing water from the vessel using generators and waiting for an extreme high tide to move it closer to the shoreline for Friday’s demonstration. To discard the boat, any remaining fuel and engines will need to be removed before the fiberglass structure can be crushed for proper disposal. "I am proud to fund this clean-up initiative, which will

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2020 target the most problematic areas in Jamaica Bay - a local treasure,” Ulrich said. “I'd like to thank the Dept. of Parks & Recreation, as well as the Jamaica Bay Ecowatchers, for their joint effort to restore and clean-up the Bay." The Mundys of the Jamaica Bay Ecowatchers, which works with the city to identify abandoned vessels that can be removed at low cost, said, "These derelict vessels cause a lot of environmental problems, as well as aesthetic problems when you look at the shoreline. There is no City, State or Federal agency designated to address this, so if the Councilman hadn't stepped up, these abandoned boats would stay here forever and just continue to harm the environment." Ulrich hopes that more of these removals will continue, but more importantly, that boat owners will take more responsibility and properly dispose of their vessels in the future. Covid-19 Tracker 10/16-10/23 As parts of Rockaway have seen increases in Covid-19 cases, it’s important to keep track of how the neighborhood is doing with coronavirus. Robby Schwach of Councilman Eric Ulrich’s office has been hard at work, tracking down the details for each Rockaway zip code and sending weekly updates. For the interest of our readers, we will be sharing this info each week. The latest info represents changes between the week of 10/16/2020-10/23/2020. In 11691, noted as a hotspot in recent weeks, positive cases increased by 40 from 3,090 to 3,130. There were two new deaths in this period, up to 379 total from 377. Of the 14,125 people tested for antibodies, 31.8 percent were positive. In 11692, cases went up by six, from 736 to 742. There were no new deaths in this period and the total remains at 95

since October 12. Of the 3,509 people tested for antibodies, 28.9 percent were found positive. In 11693, cases rose by four from 365 to 369. There were no new deaths in this period and the total remains at 29 since early summer. Of the 2,720 people tested for antibodies, 21.6 percent were found positive. In 11694, there was an uptick in cases by 13, from 820 to 833. There were no new deaths in this period and the total remains at 90 since August 17. Of the 5,756 people tested for antibodies, 22.1 percent were found positive. In 11697, cases rose by two, from 124 to 126. There were no new deaths in this period and the total remains at five since September 14. Of the 2,052 people tested for antibodies, 15.3 percent were found positive.

Youâ€™d think youâ€™re waiting on line at Disney World. Except this line is much more important. Since early voting opened on Saturday, October 24, people have lined up by the thousands across New York City to cast their ballot in what some are calling the most important election of our lifetimes. While early voting began in

New York last year, this is the first time it is being done in a presidential election and people are eager to have their vote count. Lines have stretched as far as five or six blocks away from Rockawayâ€™s local early voting siteâ€”the Rockaway YMCA on Beach 73rd Street. Some have waited more than two hours to cast their votes in person, and thereâ€™s no sign of lines growing shorter. Lines

across the city have been so long that the NYC Board and Elections decided to expand their early voting hours on Friday through Sunday. As we go to press, after Tuesdayâ€™s early voting day, the NYC Board of Elections announced that in Queens, 95,899 people have voted early so far. Queens saw 30,171

votes on Tuesday alone. The city total is 457,735. These do not include absentee ballots that were mailed in. Early voting continues through November 1, and of course, voting on election day, November 3, is still an option thatâ€™s expected to have shorter lines with more polling locations opened.

Meet the Local Democrats on the Ballot By Katie McFadden

The presidential election isnâ€™t the only big reason to vote this year. Several local races are also on the ballot. Last week, The Rockaway Times caught up with some of the Republican candidates at a Republican Club Meet the Candidates night. This week, we touched base with some of our local Democrat candidates, including a few incumbents, to give readers an opportunity to learn more about those running for State Senate, Assembly, Congress, Queens Borough President and more. The whole peninsula will be voting for a U.S. Representative for District 5, but Congressman Gregory Meeks, representing Rockaway since 1998, is running unopposed. All voters in Queens will have to decide on the next borough president. Republican candidate Joann Ariola is challenging longtime local City Councilman Donovan Richards for the seat. We reached out to Richards for an interview but did not receive a response by

press time. According to his campaign website, Richardsâ€™ primary issues include criminal justice reform, jobs and affordable housing, immigrant rights and fixing public transportation. Richards supports the closing of Rikers Island, creating local jobs and affordable housing, keeping ICE out of courts and providing resources to undocumented immigrants fighting in court, and holding the MTA accountable to provide improved transportation and infrastructure to Queens. On primarily the east end of the peninsula, voters will see State Senate District 10 on their ballot, but State Senator James Sanders Jr., who has held the position since 2013, is running unopposed. However, in the race for Assembly District 31, there will be a decision to make. Republican Joseph Cullina is challenging Democrat candidate Khaleel Anderson, who in July, was declared winner of a six-candidate Democratic primary race. Anderson, whose slogan is â€œA New Fight Togetherâ€? says heâ€™s

running â€œto unite all of the communities of District 31.â€? If elected, Khaleel Anderson, 24, would be the youngest member on the NYS Assembly, as well as the youngest African American ever elected to the position. Anderson told The Rockaway Times that his experience speaks louder than his age. A recent graduate of Queens College, Anderson spoke of his time serving on Community Board 14 for the past four years and actively attending meetings for at least eight, serving on the Board of Directors for the Rockaway Youth Task Force, a community liaison for Senator Sanders and more. â€œMy age has not impeded me from volunteering, leading, and giving my opinion and strategies that we feel will be adequate in leading this community forward,â€? Anderson said. Anderson says his top priorities if elected are education, environmental justice, transportation, and gun violence. On education, Anderson hopes to invest $50 million into culturally responsive programs and $100 million into

making schools sustainable, especially in oceanfront communities. He also hopes to bring a college to the peninsula, utilize schools as community centers, and have nutritionists in every school. He also hopes to promote childcare and social programs to assist youth, and to end the school to prison pipeline. On environmental justice, Anderson said, â€œWeâ€™re speaking about communities of color that historically have been exposed to a disproportionate amount of air pollutants and things that negatively impact the environment, so we really want to advocate for a green new deal for southeast Queens. We want to protect Rockaway from going underwater permanently.â€? On transportation, Anderson said he hopes to bring improvements to train and bus service to and from the Rockaways, including more efficient, faster service, and fighting for the Freedom Ticket for LIRR service at affordable costs. On primarily the west end of the peninsula, voters will have some decisions to make on their ballots for state senate and assembly. Republican Tom Sullivan is challenging longtime State Senator for District 15, Joe Addabbo Jr. A former councilman, Senator Addabbo has been serving as State Senator since 2009. “This is what I love to do and there’s unfinished business,” he said. Having been a leader through some of Rockaway and Broad Channel’s toughest times, including 9/11 and Hurricane Sandy, Addabbo says he hopes to use that experience to continue to help people through the latest coronavirus crisis. On his accomplishments, Addabbo spoke of advocating for the elimination of the Cross Bay Bridge toll for all Queens residents. However, delayed due to coronavirus, Addabbo says he’ll continue to fight to ensure it goes

into effect in 2021. He spoke of other bills he helped pass such as the 9/11 Remembrance bill and advocating for protections for Jamaica Bay. Having voted in support of bail reform in 2019, Addabbo spoke of his work to address concerns that followed. This April, he supported an effort to give bail to repeat offenders and to give judges more discretion in the matter. “We hear the concerns of law enforcement and constituents, and on the state level we showed that we can change things when we need to,” Addabbo said. If re-elected, Addabbo says he looks forward to the first offshore windfarms coming to Rockaway, something he advocated for, and working on more efforts to support green energy and jobs. He vows to continue to help constituents through the Covid crisis. “Hopefully we resolve everything in 2021 and we can help people get back on their feet,” he said. Addabbo hopes that voters will give him an opportunity to do so. “I truly appreciate the honor voters have bestowed upon me to give back to them full time. Ever since 2009, out of I think 724 ses-

sions in Albany, I’ve only been absent for two. It goes to show my work ethic. I love the job. We may not agree on every issue, but I hope everyone knows that I am there for them and will always be there,” Addabbo said. Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato, who has served District 23 since 2017, and is being challenged by Republican Peter Hatzipetros, also hopes to continue to be there for her constituents. “I love representing this community and I want to continue to keep working for our incredible district - which has been a privilege,” she said. Pheffer Amato spoke of some of her accomplishments, including passing legislation to “help 9/11 First Responders get access to health care, passing historic legislation protecting Jamaica Bay, and developing grassroots relationships with our community leaders and constituents helping thousands of constituents along the way.” Most importantly, it’s the work she’s done directly for constituents, “To me, this job is all about the people you help on a daily basis,” she said. “My office has resolved 3,172 cases since I

started in 2017.” Among these includes helping constituents with Build it Back, power restoration after outages, fighting for food delivery to seniors in co-op buildings during the pandemic and more. If re-elected, Pheffer Amato hopes to continue to help the state rebound after the pandemic. “We have to be creative about raising revenue and providing financial relief to New Yorkers, including legalizing mobile sports betting, and any other means that could accomplish that without raising taxes,” she said. This includes supporting a bill to tax social media companies for using data. She hopes to help New Yorkers return to resuming their lives as normal. “Nothing is more paramount than that,” she said. She also hopes to have more discussions to address “anti-Semitism, bigotry, and racial and socioeconomic disparities on the peninsula.” Ensuring the Queens Resident Rebate program for the Cross Bay Bridge is implemented, is also a big priority. This year, there is another candidate that deserves our consideration. Her name is Jo (Josephine ) Jorgensen and she is the Libertarian candidate for President that you've probably never heard of. Jo is on the ballot in all 50 states but the mainstream media doesn't cover her campaign nor was she invited to participate in the presidential debates. So, America never got to hear her ideas. It should come as no surprise that the Republican-Democrat duopoly have designed the rules to squelch any voices that might undermine their power. Win or lose, voting

It is a principled vote that signals your desire for real change and non-governmental approaches to problem solving. The Libertarian Party's goal this year is not to win the presidency, but to get 5,000,000 votes and more importantly, share the message of freedom. America desperately needs new ideas and people who can think for themselves. While everyone may not be ready for a smaller government and the individual liberty and responsibility that comes with it, at least you have a real choice on November 3. 8 Years Since Sandy: Then and Now Eight years later, Hurricane Sandy will never be forgotten. Though, in the wake of so much going on in 2020, the storm that changed so much

may seem like a distant memory. Mostly all of the pieces have been put back in place by now and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is finally

working on its coastal protection project with new groins being built in the hopes that another Sandy might not leave behind so much de-

struction. Here are a few photos from the days after Sandy hit Rockaway on October 29, 2012, and where we are today, eight years later.

Sandy claimed many parks around the peninsula and even Rockaway’s bayside 9/11 Tribute Park did not make it out unscathed. Bricks were lifted, the bulkhead destroyed, and trees and plantings saw their demise. Quick restoration was done to make the park accessible. How-

ever, with FEMA funding, in September 2018, the NYC Parks Department began a largescale renovation project to create a new seawall and railing, install new electric and irrigation systems and reset the brickwork. The park reopened to the public on September 11, 2020.

Another park that took a hard hit was the Rockaway Skate Park on Beach 91st Street. Sandy leveled the whole park, but dedicated skaters, including those at St. James Clothing and Boarders helped install temporary elements for skaters to use. But those

eventually wore out in the elements. After years of discussion, in Fall 2019, construction began to build a concrete skatepark that skaters dreamed of. In August 2020, the new park was opened to the public.

A dead end on Beach 69th Street is looking more alive after a community effort to make the areas as beautiful as its bayside views. On Sunday, October 25, volunteers from the Rockaway Bay Coastal Association, the Heart of Rockaway Civic Association, Ladies of Business Rockaway Beach, the Arverne Visionary Lions Club and others all came together at the Historic Arverne Fishing and Recreation Area on Beach 69th Street and the bay, to give it a

fresh makeover and transform it into a place for the community to enjoy. The volunteers spent the afternoon cleaning, painting, planting, brining tables to the area, creating inspirational signage and even hopscotch to beautify the area. St. John’s Hospital Eliminates Cancer Screening Costs For Those Without Health Insurance St. John’s Episcopal Hospital announced that it has established its Cancer Services Program, and has begun screening eligible, uninsured and underinsured patients for cervical and breast cancer at no cost to the patient through its participation in the New York State Department of Health’s Cancer Services Program. The hospital is playing an essential role in eliminating cost barriers that can prevent patients from seeking necessary cancer screenings. This is especially important for residents of the Rockaways, which has a higher rate of cancer for 14 cancer-types when compared to overall New York City cancer rates, and a higher rate for 17 cancer types when compared to the overall Queens county cancer rates. The NYC Department of Health has identified cancer

and heart disease as the leading causes of premature death (death before the age of 65) in the Rockaways, with breast cancer accounting for one of the three leading cancers. Assistant Vice President of Integrated Case Management and Population Health, Lorna Manning said, “We are making it as easy as possible for people to be screened for cancer, whether they have insurance or not. We are all aware of the importance of detecting and diagnosing cancers early, which is why we are providing this service to the public.” Through the Cancer Services Program, the hospital provides: Breast Cancer Screenings to women ages 40 and older; Breast Cancer Screenings to women under age 40 who are at high risk for breast cancer; Cervical Cancer Screenings to women ages 40 and older; To be eligible

Sandy Reminder: Flood Insurance Needed By John Lepore

Besides Superstorm Sandy, few topics in Rockaway can conjure up a more visceral response than the mere mention of the words “flood insurance.” With the 8th anniversary of Sandy here, what better way to commemorate that ominous event then to have a serious discussion about how flood insurance came to be and understanding its history. The National Flood Insurance Act of 1968 envisioned a nationwide program that would provide financial assistance for recovery after flood events. Since the potential losses from a single flood event could threaten the very survival of even the most robust and well-funded private company, the Federal government became the “Insurer of last resort” and ultimately the almost exclusive flood insurer in the United States. The intent of the program was to fund reserves to pay claims by collecting premiums from

across the country and to deal with regional events with those reserves. The U.S. Treasury would be a backstop to guarantee funds in the event of multiple major events that exceeded the reserves collected. After all, it was the 1960s during President Johnson’s administration and his Great Society was fresh in the national consciousness. For just a fraction of what the

Vietnam War was costing, the proponents of flood insurance argued, we could affordably secure the homes and businesses of costal Americans. It sounded like a good idea and the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) was born. The program caught on slowly at first as those in vulnerable areas needed to be educated about the program and the

fact that even though the rates were not the true actuarial rates based on risk (more on this later) but rather subsidized by the Federal Government, they still represented an additional expense to home and business owners alike. Then something truly unanticipated happened. Those seeking to live in areas that may be prone to flooding could insure their property, secure in knowledge that if there was a flood, they would be made whole again. This realization along with rising real estate values, fueled in part by access to affordable flood insurance, and a relative lull in major catastrophic storms increased housing, business and population density in coastal areas. Real estate values continued to increase and the myth of the one in a generation storm was born. Old timers would recount the severity of 1938’s Long Island Express and more recent inhabitants remembered how HurriContinued on page 25

SANDY REMINDER Continued from Page 24 cane Donna struck Long Island in 1960 and flooded much of Rockaway. As severe as those storms were, the population numbers and more importantly for flood insurance, the building density, were far less. In 1938, much of Long Island was still farmland and would not change until the post-WW2 housing boom and flight to suburbia. However, by 2012, things were very different indeed with record population levels and an ever-increasing frequency of severe storms. Everyone associates flood insurance with hurricanes but few made the connection that “no name” storms that were Nor’easters in 1992 flooded areas in the Rockaways, twice in two months. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, sporadic weather events continued to flood many low-lying areas across the peninsula and Broad Channel. Hurricane Irene in August 2011 did much to reinforce the myth and generally created a false sense of security that would cost us dear-

ly in 2012 when Sandy struck. For much of the preceding time, our concerns were directed at shoring up our beaches with groins and jetties to protect our beaches from disappearing from erosion from those same storms. Prior to October 2012, flood insurance was not a major consideration for most people. In fact, many of the people who had flood insurance had it only because they were mandated to do so by their mortgagor. The banks themselves didn’t fully understand the product or its cost and limitations past the fact that their legal departments had made it a requirement to close loans. Federal regulations required banks that made loans in “Special Flood Hazard Areas” to secure flood insurance as a way to fund the program and to encourage lenders to issue mortgages in coastal areas. Auditing by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) which manages NFIP, was spotty and banks adhered to the regulations with varying degrees of compliance. Remember earlier when I said we would have more on the

real rates and the rates charged by NFIP? Well, after huge losses from numerous storms down south, FEMA quickly realized that unless rates and rating were more in line with the actual costs of insurance, that even the Federal government couldn’t continue to absorb the costs. Naturally, states that did not have exposure to flooding events were reluctant to continue to subside this hole in the government’s pocket. Interestingly enough, changes to the rates and zones for flood insurance were well underway even before Sandy struck. Sandy only compounded the losses and still stands today as the third largest flood event in FEMA history with a total cost to the agency of around 8.8 billion dollars. Katrina in 2005 was first at 16.5 billion and Harvey in 2017 with 8.9 billion in losses was second. Today, the NFIP owes the US Treasury 20.5 billion dollars for past flood events out of the maximum of 30.425 billion dollars maximum it can borrow. That leaves just under 10 billion for any future events unless con-

Page 25 gress enacts new legislation. Currently, the NFIP program and its affiliates have over 5 million policies in force with a staggering 1.25 trillion dollars of coverage. Interestingly the number of flood policies in NY state in 2011 were about 167,000 with the number peaking understandably at 195,000 in 2013. The most recent numbers from 2019 show the number close to 2011 levels at 170,000. There is hope that the Army Corps of Engineers programs will make us more flood resilient but the timeline for the completion of the project is long and always subject to the changing winds of government. In the meantime, we a still in a high exposure scenario where in this year alone a record number of storms exhausted the prescribed list of names allocated for storms. We have been fortunate that none of the storms made landfall anywhere near us. In the meantime, don’t buy into the myth. Stay safe and strong. SFDS CYO on Track The Saint Francis CYO Track Team recently competed in two cross-country meets at Alley Pond Park. In the season opening CYO Developmental Meet, all competitors ran a half mile race. Medals were awarded to the top 15 finishers in each heat. In the Senior Division (8th Grade), Megan Youngberg came in first among all female competitors with a time of 3:07. Lauren Mandela came in second, and Keira O'Sullivan, fourth. John Xuereb came in fourth among the males in 2:57. In the Junior Girls Division (6th and 7th Grades), Falynne Parchment came in eighth among all female competitors in 3:08. Jacqueline Doda, Lily Casares and Catherine Johnson also won medals. Prior to a transfusion, a recipient will have their blood type screened twice to prevent an incompatible blood transfusion, except in a dire emergency where O negative blood will be given. Screening both the recipient and donor blood prevents transfusing the wrong blood type, which may result in a transfusion reaction. When given the wrong blood type, a patient may often have immediate symptoms, which is why a nurse will observe the patient at the beginning of a transfusion. Delayed symptoms, which may appear a day or two later, may rarely occur. These symptoms include back or flank pain, dark urine, chills, fainting and dizziness, fever, flushing, shortness of breath, or itchiness. While transfusion reactions are not always serious, they may result in acute kidney failure, anemia, fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema), and shock. A while ago, Kevin Boyle asked me to write a column about the human blood ABO system and, as I write my columns about two months before in advance, it is appearing today. Human blood types were first discovered by the Austrian physician Karl Landsteiner in the early 1900s, yet even today the function and purpose of the ABO blood type system is unknown. Blood types date back to well over 20 million years ago. Like eye color, blood type is inherited. The letter stands for the type of antigen, or protein, found on the surface of red blood cells. There are two blood proteins â€“ A and B. Someone with type AB

erythroblastosis fetalis. This happens when an RH negative mother gives birth to an RH positive baby. The motherâ€™s Rh antibodies attack the Rh antigens on the babyâ€™s red blood cells. In this country, 37% of people are O+ while 34% are A+. O negative, which has no antigens, is the universal donor while AB +, which has all the antigens, is the universal blood recipient. Because some bacteria closely resemble some blood antigens, the immune system may have trouble differentiating between the two. For example, those with type A are more susceptible to smallpox while type B are more susceptible to E. coli. There are also some minor, mostly insignificant blood types like MN, Diego, Kidd, and Duffy. Of these, Duffy is significant because Duffy negative persons are more susceptible to a malarial infection caused by P. vivax. There is a theory that blood type is related to personality. This theory states that type A persons are calm and trustworthy, type B are creative and excitable, AB are thoughtful and emotional, and O are confident leaders. In Japan, a

Of course, bad things happen and we are all so weary from the protracted, dynamic nature of the pandemic that they are now calling it pandemic fatigue. How can we be present with

fear and contact our heart so we can shift our focus and be the best expression of ourselves? Sometimes compassion just requires us to be present with it. The power to calm our sometimes catastrophic thinking lies in our hearts and minds. Nothing makes sense these days so looking for meaning outside of ourselves doesn’t seem to work and can leave us feeling stranded and lonely. Connecting with our deep reservoir of innate goodness and grace can be found by quieting the mind through prayer and meditation. This then is radiated out to those around us. The Netflix documentary “The Social Dilemma” presents the scary undeniable reality about social media and its impact on society and the world. Why is it so hard to put our phones down, to disengage from our favorite social media sites? Because they have been engineered to be addictive, according to the now remorseful technologists who invented these devices and apps and are inter viewed in the film. According to Dr. Anna L embke, an addiction specialist inter viewed in the documentar y, human beings are wired to crave the interpersonal connections that social media enables. Chamath Palihapitiya, one of the technologists inter viewed, says the short-term approvals we get from social networking sites, like “hearts, likes, thumbs up … which we conflate … with value” and truth, make us want to stay signed in. And according to mental health professionals, “FOMO,” the fear of missing out on something, like a social media notification, keeps us from putting our devices away. As the film explains, nonstop scrolling and “notifications keep users constantly engaged” and interacting on social media, thereby continually dropping clues to ad serving technology about their interests. Further, the “personalized recommendations” served up by social media use responsive data both to predict and to influence our actions, turning us into easy targets for “advertisers and propogandists” that pay Facebook and other social

The film also points out the negative impacts that social media has had and continues to have on human society. For example, statistics show that suicide rates for teenage girls have risen; conspiracy theories have thrived; extremist groups have flourished; political groups and outside actors are using social media to influence elections. Other significant impacts include misinformation and “fake news,” the weakening of the family unit because of the isolation caused by social media, and the rise of behemoths like Facebook, Google, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. that yield immense influence over humanity worldwide. The film varies from a strictly documentary nature by interspersing the drama of a fictional family struggling with aspects of social media addiction (a daughter suffering from depression stemming from social media-induced self-image issues, a son radicalized by an online extremist group). Through an evil character named A.I. (played sometimes in triple split screen by Vincent Kartheiser of “Mad Men” fame), we see behind the family scenes into the workings of a social media network. A.I. personifies, in real time, how the technology addicts a user and renders him a puppet of online propaganda. While the family drama is simplistic and stilted at times, it serves to make viewers, regardless of the depth of their tech background, aware on a fundamental level of how social media and the technology behind it functions, why, and its detriments. The film is eye opening and everyone, including those who think they have a decent technology background and understanding of how social media works, should see it.

Storms can hit unexpectedly and with great force. Meteorologists are usually the harbingers of these virulent weather events. This past spring, a tsunami, COVID-19, hit New York without much warning and its impact still exist to this day. It was then that COVID-19 fastened the door shut on almost all aspects of what is defined as everyday life. It devastated economic growth, drastically increased the annual death toll, and wreaked havoc in the educational community. In just a few short months, COVID-19 created the perfect storm which uprooted the stability of many individuals’ mental health and sent the educational world into a tailspin. Almost overnight, there was a universal new normal, although there was nothing normal about this newness. For school principals working under these demand-

ing and chaotic circumstances and still continuing to do so, the pressure is incalculable, the options are limited, and the sleepless nights have become the norm. As we made our way through National Principals’ Month (October), it is morally imperative upon those who have been guided by strong leadership to bring our experience to the forefront. Principals are among the hardest working, yet often least recognized individuals in

education. Summarily, they are often the unsung heroines/heroes. One principal, in particular, Mrs. Ann O’Hagan-Cordes, Principal of The Mary Louis Academy, deserves accolades for her outstanding performance as principal during this global pandemic. In a time that has brought about upheaval to many communities, ours was particularly hit when COVID-19 took the life of our beloved colleague, friend, and assistant princi-

pal, Mr. Joseph Lewinger. Mrs. O’Hagan-Cordes executed her role as the consummate professional as principal of TMLA while also grieving the loss of Mr. Lewinger. She served as “Comforter in Chief” during this tragic time to the entire TMLA community and surrounding communities as well. Mrs. O’Hagan-Cordes suffered an immense personal loss with the passing of Mr. Lewinger but always put others’ needs before her own. Her selflessness during such a trying time could only be carried out by someone of exemplary character and illustrious moral stature. Through the waves of uncertainty and grief, Mrs. O’Hagen-Cordes has acted as our life vest, keeping us afloat when the waves of life hit. She has been a source of strength and faith. Happiness relates more to the transient occurrences in our lives, those that are positive and those that are not. These events affect all people without prejudice. The negative events may rock the boat and cause us a symbolic type of seasickness. We will not sink, however, if our anchor is properly employed. The events of the past ten months have tested the strength of our anchor, Mrs. Oâ€™Hagan-Cordes, but with it all she continues to get us safely through the storm and with much resolve. Principals like Mrs. Oâ€™Hagen-Cordes help us to see leadership qualities that are needed every day: they nurture faculty members; they express gratitude and encouragement, and they cater to the needs of families. COVID-19 changed the

reality of education and the role of a principal has been redefined. The top priority is for the safety and overall well-being of all the students in the building. This is no easy task, and we have seen firsthand how physically and mentally exhausting it can be on an individual. Let us be reminded of this each day and give our sincere thanks to all administrators. These are the reasons it is important to celebrate principals whose leadership has a positive impact on their schools. But the broader view of celebrating principals should include recognizing that every schoolâ€”and every studentâ€”deserves such a principal. Through it all they find the time to not only be a principal, but a spouse, parent, sibling, aunt/uncle, and friend. Their perseverance is something to admire and love. The Match of the Night was Danny Burch/Oney Lorcan vs Breezango in a very hard-

fought, action-filled match. Breezango never fails to entertain but I was sad to see that they lost the NXT Tag Team Championships. In this week's edition, we cover what is the most important aspect of a Professional Wrestlers life - "Travel." As I have noted before in previous columns, professional wrestling is not your normal 9 to 5 job. It involves a lot of training and dedication and once you have established yourself and are working on a steady basis, a professional wrestler must learn to become acclimated with life on the road. Ninety

percent of a wrestler’s career involves traveling from city to city, state to state and even country to country as schedules can be very demanding. Professional wrestlers are deemed "independent contractors" and the cost of travel falls upon the individual wrestler. Many promotions do offer to pay for travel expenses but that depends on the type of contract the wrestler agreed to with the promotion. For many the expenses of car rentals, plane tickets and gas/ tolls comes out of pocket. This is an expense that the individual wrestler must budget for throughout his or her career. To cut down on the cost of travel, many wrestlers often travel in groups by renting cars or vans when traveling to the next town or city for a show. Travel can also be very exhausting both physically and mentally with many days spent

on the road away from their homes and families. A wrestler must get used to the rigors of travel throughout their careers because travel equals income and income equals opportunity. With opportunity, an individual wrestler can continue to live his/her dream and achieve their goals. The question of the week comes from Scott A. in Far Rockaway. He asked, "Will Matt Sydal leave Ring of Honor for the WWE or AEW?" Matt Sydal has already made his debut for AEW at the All Out pay-per-view in the Casino Battle Royal.
