Community Board 14 November Meeting Recap By Marina Cregan
On Tuesday, November 17, Community Board 14 (CB14) held its monthly meeting via Zoom. On the agenda was the Arverne East Project, which included the proposed ULURP zoning map and text amendment to establish a new mixed use district that would allow for the development of a new microbrewery on Beach 35th St., as well as the Urban Development Action Area Project (UDAAP) to facilitate the Arverne East Nature Preserve. Due to the expected extensive discussion regarding the Arverne East Project, the Report from the Chairwoman Dolores Orr, and Report from District Manager Jonathan Gaska, were kept short as a way to keep the meeting on track. Following both reports, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato spoke expressing her concerns about how the proposal for housing was originally supposed to be 20% affordable housing and
80% market rate. However, now the proposal appears to be 80% affordable homes and only 20% market rate homes. Sara Levenson and Kevin Parris presented the Arverne East Project. Regarding the Nature Preserve, Parris stated that the Parks Department and HPD had taken the concerns expressed at the last CB14 meeting and implemented them into the plans for the Nature Preserve. He added that the city was allotted an additional $2 million on top of the original $35 million total funding for the Nature Preserve, in order to have Edgemere Ave. redesigned and widened. Levenson continued the report with the design of the Nature Preserve. The goal for the preserve is to restore and promote the native ecology that both currently and formerly exist here. Working with Parks, they anticipate having a stronger park ranger presence throughout the preserve. This will allow for school groups, educational
tours, and the community to enjoy the preserve. Along these paths will be wildlife signage that will state the history of the site. Signs will also explain the new ecological wildlife that will be implemented on the preserve. Construction of the preserve is expected to begin in Spring 2021. Levenson reported that they have listened to CB14’s suggestions from the October meeting, and have investigated lighting to enhance the connectivity from the Edgemere neighborhood to the north and the boardwalk to the south. In addition, they are looking to add more lighting from Beach 54th Street toward the bay and directly to the boardwalk, as well as on the pathway from Beach 47th and Beach 44th Street from Edgemere to the boardwalk. There will also be a comfort station on the east side of Beach 44th Street. NYC Parks assured CB14 that they will have more parks staff assigned to this area to help maintain
the comfort station. Although the Parks Dept. addressed some of the concerns CB14 raised at last month’s meeting, Orr reiterated the importance of the parking lot that will be built on Beach 44th Street. She stated again, that 20 spots will not be sufficient for the expected amount of people who wish to attend the preserve. Additionally, she stated that the parking lot must be secure with either gates or meters, as a way to ensure this parking lot will be strictly for the use of the Nature Preserve. The Parks Dept. responded that they understood her concerns and are working on implementing these suggestions. The second action discussed was the ULURP proposal for a zoning map to establish a mixed use district MX-21, which will allow for the development of a microbrewery, and a tap house at the south end of Beach 35th Street. COMMUNITY BOARD 14 NOVEMBER MEETING RECAP Continued from Page 3 Rockaway Brewing Company, Ethan Long, presented the proposal for the expansion of the brewing company. The goal of this expansion is to educate the brewing company’s consumers with diversity of flavors of beer, while making this a community based location. Long relayed past community events the brewing company held at their current location at Beach 72nd Street, which he hopes to continue at this new location. The brewery also has food that hosts seasonal popup kitchens, including tacos, Mexican street food, pizza, and recently a vegan takeover. The idea to expand the brewery really came into the works when COVID-19 hit. Long reported that when the shutdown happened back in March, the brewery conducted the Rockaway Food Initiative. The goal of the Rockaway
Food Initiative was to provide food and farm fresh materials to local communities and first responders. After generating over $100,000 to fund the initiative and preparing over 5,000 hot meals, the brewery became dedicated to creating this new space as a full force community based effort. The plan for this new brewery on Beach 35th Street is a small manufacturing facility at which they will be able to hold beer tours and other events. In addition, with this expansion, the brewing company will also be able to increase their staff by 40-50 people, dedicated to a diversity in manufacturing employee jobs. Long stated that the brewing company intends to hire locally and within the community. At the proposed new location, the main goal is for the brewery to be inviting to the community as a whole. outdoor space in order to hold events. However, the location will be about four city blocks away from P.S. 106. Some CB14 members expressed concerns with the brewing company to be so close to the school, but Long stated that they intend to only have one truck come to the loading dock a day. They will minimize the amount of deliveries so as to not disrupt the school and the neighborhood. Another concern raised by CB14 members was the sanitation of disposing and creating the brew. Long stated that they do not have giant smokestacks, as a way to prevent pollution into the air. He also stated that the brewery is required to neutralize their water and clean their tanks regularly before disposing into the sewer. The water is neutralized as a way to decrease the oxygen levels, keeping the goal of having an environmentally friendly brewery and design practice in mind. the Rockaway Brewing Company. However, although people supported the idea of the expansion of the brewing company, they stressed their concerns regarding the Arverne East Project as a whole. They stated that this new ULURP process has too many flaws that would not benefit the community, because there is no guarantee that this space will be used accordingly. When it came time for the board to vote on the ULURP and UDAAP, CB14 remained divided. The board expressed their concerns that the community would not be guaranteed the 80% of affordable home ownership and 20% market rate, as well as the reconstruction of Edgemere Avenue. Because of the disagreement, Gaska agreed to make a list of all CB14’s concerns and send it to the Edgemere Civic for approval. CB14 will hold an emergency Zoom meeting on Monday, November 23 to vote on the ULURP for the brewery, as well as the Nature Preserve.

Flight 587 Remembered 19 Years Later Story and Photos By Katie McFadden
It’s hard to believe it’s been 19 years since American Airlines Flight 587 came crashing down in Belle Harbor, killing all 260 on board and five neighbors on the ground, including Helen and Thomas Concannon, Kathleen and Christopher Lawler and Franco Pomponio. But those touched hardest by this tragedy, will never forget. On Thursday, November 12, friends, family and elected officials gathered at the Flight 587 memorial on Beach 116th Street to remember those lost that day, 19 years ago. Despite the cold, rainy weather and the coronavirus pandemic altering arrangements for the day, there was no deterrent that could keep the families from remembering their fallen loved ones. A crowd
gathered by the Flight 587 Tribute for a ceremony that included the tolling of the bells to mark a moment of silence, the reading of the names of all 265 victims and remarks by Eligio Jáquez, the Dominican Consul of the City of New York and Mayor Bill de Blasio. “We know the pain never goes away, but we do feel the comfort of each other. We do feel the support of each other. And we do know that memory is powerful and all our loved ones, they're watching right now, they're feeling our love and we will never forget them,” De Blasio said. “We will never forget the passengers of Flight 587.” At the end of the ceremony, families shared memories and tears as they placed flowers along the memorial wall, next to their family members’ names.

Covid-19 Tracker 11/09-11/16 As parts of Rockaway have seen increases in Covid-19 cases, it’s important to keep track of how the neighborhood is doing with coronavirus. Robby Schwach of Councilman Eric Ulrich’s office has been hard at work, tracking down the details for each Rockaway zip code and sending weekly updates. For the interest of our readers, we will be sharing this info each week. The latest info represents changes between the week of 11/09/2020-11/16/2020. In 11691, while it is no longer considered a hotspot, positive cases increased by 57 from 3,207 to 3,264. There were no new deaths in this period, and the total remains at 379. In 11692, cases went up by 8, from 758 to 764. There were no new deaths in this period and the total remains at 95 since October 12.
In 11693, cases rose by 10 from 395 to 405. There were no new deaths in this period and the total remains at 29 since early summer. In 11694, there was an increase in cases by 28, from 861 to 889. There were no new deaths in this period and the total remains at 90 since August 17. In 11697, cases rose by 10, from 130 to 140. There were no new deaths in this period and the total remains at five since September 14. NYC has started to release statistics showing the seven-day rolling average of positive tests by zip code. Rolling Rocco Strong For Broad Channel Boy’s Cancer Battle By Katie McFadden
Roller hockey players from around the area will be coming together to get Rocco Strong at the Rockaway Hockey Rink on Sunday, November 22. Since his diagnosis in May, 11-yearold Rocco Pisani of Broad Channel has been an inspiration in his fight against leukemia. Inspired by his determination to stay Rocco Strong, the Rockaway Hockey League is gearing up to fight cancer with him. When Bryan Elfant and Bobby Keane ran a successful Back the Blue hockey tournament last month to raise funds for suicide prevention, Johnny Wagner had an idea. He thought of his friend Rob Pisani, whose young son was diagnosed with leukemia this year. “He was diagnosed at the height of Covid, so we couldn’t really do anything for Rocco back then, so I thought let’s put a hockey tournament together to raise money for Rocco and put a smile on his face,” Wagner said. Wagner passed the idea by Rob Pisani, who was on board. As an avid sports fan, coming together to play a sport for Rocco was fitting. The timing of the tournament would also coincide with Rocco starting a new journey in his cancer battle. Just ahead of Sunday’s tournament, Rocco has started a treatment called delayed intensification, a multi-week phase of chemotherapy designed to eliminate remaining leukemia cells. Sunday’s tournament will be a reminder to Rocco that the community has his back. “We want to do this, so he knows Broad Channel is behind him, Rockaway is behind him, and even hockey players from Brooklyn are behind him,” Wagner said. Since launching the idea for the hockey tournament, Wagner says the outpouring of support has been overwhelming. As we go to press, there are eight teams scheduled to play in Sunday’s tournament and four more on a waiting
list. A 50/50 that Wagner set up ahead of the event sold out within just eight hours. T-shirts for the event featuring the #RoccoStrong hashtag and Rocco’s jersey number, 22, which will be sold during the tournament, are already in high demand. Wagner says he’s blown away by the willingness of local community members to come together for the cause. “It’s incredible. I knew growing up in Broad Channel and Rockaway that people there are always willing to help, but the amount of support and people reaching out has been incredible. Everyone is reaching out to lend a helping hand because they know how important it is as a community to stand together. It’s really remarkable,” Wagner said. Proceeds from the tournament will go to the Pisani family and Wagner hopes the funding helps to bring a smile to the face of the little boy who has been not only strong, but selfless in his cancer battle. “Rocco plays baseball and basketball and wants to be a fitness trainer. He’s very athletic and is always outside playing sports. So in May, a fundraiser was started for Rocco because he wanted to build a gym in his backyard because he can’t leave his house because of Covid. After that, he had some leftover money and Rocco dedicated $1,000 of it to buy pillowcases for the other kids in the hospital so they would each have their own pillowcases,” Wag-
ner said. He hopes funding from the tournament will help the family cover any medical bills they have or allow Rocco to buy something for himself. “I want Rocco to feel like he can buy something that makes him happy, whether that’s something that has to do with sports or doing stuff outside, just anything to make him happy," Wagner said. Sunday’s tournament kicks off with the first puck drop at 8:30 a.m. at the hockey rink near the boardwalk on Beach 109th Street. Wagner expects the games to continue for a good bulk of the day and encourages anyone to stop by and cheer on the teams as they stay Rocco Strong. There will be food, including three six-foot heroes donated by Bagel and Barista of Howard Beach, masks
available for those who don’t have them to help keep attendees safe, t-shirts for sale, raffles, a contest for the best moustache and extra donations can be made on the day of the event. “It’s going to be a great day for everyone to come hang out,” Wagner said. The 100th Precinct Community Council hosted a successful annual Thanksgiving food drive on Saturday, November 14. Members of the 100th Precinct Community Council, including Kathleen Selig, Andy McGee, Keisha Cunningham, Ozzie Edwards, Jean
Daouphars and Kathy Heavey, NYPD Explorers from Post 2100 and their supervisor Police Officer Helen Olangunjo and Community Affairs officers Moore and Diaz all helped make this event a success. They volunteered their time to collect food and gift card donations in front of the Arverne and Rockaway Park Stop and Shop locations, to help make this Thanksgiving plentiful for those in need. After the collection, all of the donations were delivered to Reverend Joyce Dugger at the First Congregational Church of Rockaway on Beach 94th Street, to be distributed through their food pantry. “Thank you to the Rockaway community for generously stepping up and making the Drive a success!” 100th Precinct Community Council President Kathy Heavey said. “Happy Thanksgiving to all.”

Far Rockaway Watchdogs Find Mentors Within the NYPD By Katie McFadden
Jennifer Blair, founder of the Far Rockaway Watchdogs, has been hard at work making meaningful connections throughout the community, especially with local youth. Her efforts recently caught the attention of NYPD Assistant Chief Ruben Beltran, commanding officer of NYPD Patrol Borough Queens South, who made the trip out to Rockaway on Tuesday, November 17, to see her work in action and offer his support on behalf of law enforcement. Unfortunately, less than desirable weather forced a change of plans from an event that was supposed to be held at Bayswater Park, featuring a football and basketball showcase and a dance party, but a quick backup plan of hot chocolate and a networking opportunity at Far Rockaway’s 101st Precinct offered local youth the chance to make connections
with police and learn about opportunities for their future. Over the past few months, Blair has been spearheading efforts to connect local youth with law enforcement, but the Far Rockaway Watchdogs has been making meaningful changes within the community since it began in 2004. In memory of her dear cousin, Quentin B. Johnson, who was killed due to gun violence in 1999, Blair wanted to do something to honor him, so she set out
to host a basketball tournament, a sport that Johnson loved. With funding provided by then Councilman James Sanders Jr., Blair established an official organization to carry out her efforts, which paved the way for the Far Rockaway Watchdogs. The turnout for the tournament was beyond her expectations. “So many kids came out. It Jennifer Blair with Assistant was amazing. The Far Rockaway Watchdogs provides an outlet for all of those things by hosting events and connecting community members with vital resources and giving youth an outlet to play sports. Part of that effort was to include the start of a flag football league this year, but coronavirus put those plans on pause until next year. However, the organization found new purpose this year as events unfolded across the country. With the pandemic in play, the group has made efforts to deliver groceries to local seniors. Then as a national conversation opened up about policing, the focus changed again. “After the George Floyd tragedy, we switched our trajectory to work more with law enforcement,” she said. The group started working with local police to spearhead basketball and softball games between local youth and officers. “And after the incident on the boardwalk where
an officer used a chokehold, we doubled down,” Blair said. “We knew Rockaway people are different. We don’t want to turn Rockaway into Portland. There’s protests all over but Rockaway has protested and not one window was shattered.” Using that energy, Blair focused on connecting even more with local law enforcement, opening up meaningful dialogue between the community and the NYPD. At the end of June, she hosted a panel at Macedonia Baptist Church to bring together local police, youth, clergy and more for an emotional conversation. “It was good to hear from police officers who worked in Rockaway so soon after what happened. Everyone was emotional and upset and didn’t know how to direct those frustrations, so we took a humanistic approach and sat down with the officers and just talked,” Blair said. Tuesday’s event involving the commanding officer of Queens South showed that these connections and conversations are ongoing. “I wanted everyone to see what community partners

can do with law enforcement because the community is not going anywhere, and law enforcement isn’t going anywhere. Defund the police is the wrong brand,” Blair said before Chief Beltran and the officers of the 101st Precinct. “We want to fund you, but we want it to go to the proper channels. Let the community do what you shouldn’t do. Let us do this type of work and we can work together.” Assistant Chief Beltran, who is familiar with the Rockaways as he raised his kids here, agreed. “I met Jennifer at a police reform meeting and the second she started talking about her program, I was excited to learn more about it. I’ve gotten to see it in person and the impact that you have in the community and on the kids. Kids are the future. Working with the kids, developing kids and mentoring kids is important. The work that you’re doing with the kids and young men and women, that’s what we need to work harder on to do. It’s gotta be successful, in that the young men and women want to participate and be a part of the change,”
Beltran said. “How do we convert that energy from marching and social justice to improving our lives and having hope for the future? That happens with kids. There’s nobody more hopeful than kids. They have a blank slate, they have the world in front of them, they see where they want to go in their dreams. Our job is to make them believe those dreams come true and they can become whatever they want to become. Find out what that skill is, what that gift is and let them create that for future and make the world a better place. You’re on the frontlines of doing that so I thank you Jennifer.” Before delicious hot chocolate was served, the floor was opened up to questions. Several of the youth in attendance, from NYPD Explorers to the youth of the Far Rockaway Watchdogs had questions for Assistant Chief Beltran and representatives from the Queens District Attorney’s office about internship opportunities and efforts to engage youth and how those opportunities can help guide their future.

Thanksgiving: You’re In, You’re Out

The Governor recently announced new restrictions, the latest set of actions aimed at harnessing the coronavirus in New York. In addition to the travel restrictions, having negative tests both before and after you come to New York, he has deployed the National Guard at the airports and tunnels. In the past week, he went even further in requiring restaurants and bars with liquor licenses to close up shop by 10 p.m. All this to combat rising infection and hospitalization rates. No one wants to go back to the early days when we were afraid to even go outside. While wearing a mask might not be popular in middle America, for the most part, New Yorkers have been pretty diligent about donning the facial coverings. A
walk-through Manhattan will reveal almost everyone wearing something on their face. Even here in Rockaway, everyone is respectful and follows the rules in stores, and when not socially distant. My trips to Brooklyn and northern Queens also find people in the streets wearing masks. New Yorkers get it and are following the rules. But the latest pronouncement from the Governor requires that no more than ten people gather in personal residences. This seems to be put in place just in time for Thanksgiving. New Yorkers celebrate this classic American holiday with family and friends. So, it appears that the Governor is saying to us all, rank your family and friends, determine the cutoff at ten, and then tell everyone from ten on that they can’t celebrate with you. Now for some, this may come as a great relief, because there are just some folks who always come to Thanksgiving empty-handed, or late, or stay too
late, or are too loud! Now folks can say, hey I am only following the Governor’s rules, and I don’t want to be a super-spreader, and I am really just looking out for your safety and health, so please stay home. In fact, you can probably lower the number from ten to something lower and blame the top executive of New York State. “Sorry, man, you know the Governor said no!”. For others who truly love their families, this will prove to be a very difficult time. Telling Uncle Ralphie “sorry, you can’t come over,” or maybe telling Uncle Ralphie, “you can come over, but Aunt Millie needs to stay home,” will be a really hard thing to do. And how do you determine what separates guests numbers 9, 10 and 11. I mean 9 and 10 are in, but 11 will just have to figure out Thanksgiving on their own? I pity anyone who has a big family, which is just about everyone in Rockaway. Of course, this may result in the sale of many more turkeys, because a large turkey that could feed several family
members will now result in the sale of two or three turkeys, as a group of 20 or more are broken up into groups of ten. Enforcement will be especially tricky during Thanksgiving. I can only imagine the door-to-door searches that will ensue across the state looking for rule-breakers. “Hello mam, yes it’s the National Guard, mind if we count your guests?” I guess if you break the law (the Governor’s pronouncement is a law?) there will be penalties to pay. And if your celebration has a group of say, 15 people, won’t it be awkward to tell five they have to leave before they have any turkey or stuffing? As a former accountant, I would use either the FIFO or LIFO methods myself, first or last ones in are out. Well, I hope I make the cut (no pun intended) and have a seat for Thanksgiving dinner this year, I don’t want to be the odd man!! I am pretty sure the Governor won’t have to worry; I don’t think he will be on too many invitation lists this year.

Far Rockaway Center Says Thank You to Their Veterans In recent years at Far Rockaway Center, Veterans Day has been a day for veterans to get together with family and friends and receive a personalized plaque for their bravery during their time served, many who served from WWII all the way through to the War on Terror. The personalized plaques included their name, rank, and the word “VETERAN” engraved, along
with a symbol of two American flags and the American eagle. Even with this year’s event being noticeably different due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leadership at Far Rockaway Center, the 100bed nursing and rehabilitation facility on Virginia Street in Far Rockaway wouldn’t let the virus get in the way of this special day. Even though
no family or friends were on hand this year, the ceremony went on as planned so 15 veterans received medals and a Certificate of Merit from Triboro Center’s leadership and Centers Health Care. Recreation Director Zelideth Reyes told the families that photos would be posted on the fa-

cility’s Facebook page by that evening, and they were. Refreshments following the ceremony were also enjoyed by all. “We are all proud of our Veterans,” Reyes said. “This was an emotional ceremony as it brought some of the Vets and staff to tears. We thank them for their service.”

By Beth Hanning The next holiday is Thanksgiving. Why is Thanksgiving so shunned in society? I remember in elementary school coloring wonderful pictures of cornucopias, and close dinner gatherings between the Native Americans and the Pilgrims at the first Thanksgiving. Is it because now the story is out and the origin is that we technically pillaged the Native Americans and caused their destruction? Why doesn’t Thanksgiving get any recognition in the world of media? The only Thanksgiving tune that comes to mind is Adam Sandler’s “The Thanksgiving Song.” However, that song was originally performed in 1992 on Saturday Night Live. Many “millennials” do not even know the popular culture references in the holiday song. Many know Elvis, but do they know Jimmy Walker

Holiday Jumping from “Good Times” or model Cheryl Tiegs? No other popular culture singer or songwriter has managed to pen a tune to spending time with the relatives and eating and drinking to excess? They would not even have to be as original as Adam Sandler and write their own song. They could Google a list of Thanksgiving songs and remake an old song with an updated beat, similarly to what many artists do with Christmas tunes. Forget about music? What about Thanksgiving films? I love to see the classic Steve Martin and John Candy Planes Trains and Automobiles on television a few times during November. This comedy follows two men desperate to get home for Thanksgiving after their plane is cancelled due to weather. This is as good of a film as The Christmas Story and should be on as well for 24 hours during the Thanksgiving weekend, similar to the 24hour feed that The Christmas
Story receives during Christmas on TBS. Thank goodness for good ole Charlie Brown and his gang for delivering us some Thanksgiving cheer even though the episode is over 40 years old. I am happy to report that Amazon and Home Goods have stepped up their game. I purchased tons of Thanksgiving paper plates and napkins and even got some Thanksgiving signs for the house. My new favorite is “Harvest Blessings.” I could not believe the section of Thanksgiving / fall items they had. I even searched fall/ Thanksgiving shower curtains and items for bath and I found a fabulous shower curtain with a quote from Oscar Wilde, “And all at once, summer collapsed into fall.” I know some people have decorated their homes for Christmas already due to the pandemic and stating it would cheer them up...well my new towels and shower curtain make me smile each time. I also smile
each day I return home and look at my beautiful fall wreaths. I have a few fans who also stop by and tell me they always love how I change the wreaths. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I do not have to purchase gifts, wrap gifts and organize which gifts are going to which house, let alone what to buy that picky relative, or what to get the man who has everything: my dad. I honestly have no idea what to get him this year. He has informed us he needs nothing. So, while we have a few weeks, let us enjoy the calm before the storm: Christmas. BLM March Held In Belle Harbor On Saturday, November 14, Rockaway residents and others walked through the streets of Belle Harbor in a Black Lives Matter art march. Accompanied by a brass band, the group called Your Friendly Anti-Racist Neighbors danced and celebrated unabashedly in solidarity and support of Black lives. In a statement, the group said, “While the response to our march was overwhelmingly pos-
itive, there was some negativity. We got a few middle fingers and were called ‘Communists.’ One of our marchers recognized one of these community members and when confronted, he spewed anti-Semitic hatred. Such ugliness from our neighbors is the reason we organized this action. “In spite of these ignorant, hateful remarks, we remained committed to positivity. Be-
cause of the uncommon sight and sound of a brass band in our suburban neighborhood, anyone who was home at the time saw us and was invited to join. We handed out flowers to all, including those who expressed they were not in support or those hesitant to engage. We danced through the neighborhood, on the beach, down the commercial corridor of 129th Street., and over to the
boardwalk. Several people left their homes to join us and we heard claps, cheers, exclamations of ‘thank you for doing this’ and ‘I didn’t realize you were out here too.’ A few people tearfully remarked on how beautiful it was. And there were those who might not agree but were still able to enjoy, recognizing that this was done out of beauty, solidarity, joy, and love.” Photos by Argenis Apolinario.

There are 12 cranial nerves in the human body. Unlike most of the nerves in our bodies, the cranial nerves originate from the brain itself (specifically from the brain stem), not the spinal cord. Some, like the trigeminal and facial nerves, exit through the skull and run between the skull and skin. Others, for example nerves to the eyes, ears, and nose, remain completely within the skull, neck, or chest. Here is a list of these nerves, numbered I through XII: I – olfactory nerve – responsible for the sense of smell II – optic – responsible for vision III – oculomotor – controls some eye movements and dilation/constriction of the pupil IV – trochlear – other eye movements V – trigeminal – largest cranial nerve, responsible for facial sensation. Nerves mandibular VI – abducens – still more eye movements VII – facial – controls facial movement. Viral infections of this nerve cause Bell’s palsy VIII – vestibulocochlear – responsible for hearing and balance. Malfunction of this nerve may cause tinnitus or dizziness IX – glossopharyngeal – controls swallowing, taste, and saliva production X – vagus – partially controls breathing and heart rate/ rhythm XI – accessory – controls head and neck movement XII – hypoglossal – controls tongue movement and partially responsible for speech and swallowing As you can imagine, injury, infection, or damage to these nerves may cause a myriad of diseases and maladies, not the least of which may be blindness or deafness. One of the more painful and difficult to treat conditions involving the cranial nerves is called trigeminal neuralgia (TN). Traditionally

called tic douloureux, TN is a chronic neuropathic pain disorder characterized by spontaneous or elicited paroxysms of electric shock-like or stabbing pain in a region of the face. A poor quality-of-life and suicide in severe cases has been attributed to this disorder. The pain of TN most frequently affects the distribution of the second/ maxillary (cheek), or third/ mandibular (jaw) branches of the nerve but may include the first/ophthalmic (orbit) branch. The diagnosis is clinical and is based on three main criteria: pain is restricted to one or more branches of the trigeminal nerve; paroxysms of pain that are sudden, intense, and very short (< one second up to two minutes) and described as a “shock” or “electric sensation”; and pain triggered by innocuous stimuli on the face or mouth. TN is almost always one-sided. The pain of TN may be triggered by common occurrences of daily life such as the touch of a napkin or gentle breeze flowing across
the sensitive area of the face. There are three types of TN – classical, secondary, and idiopathic. The classical type, which is the most common type, is caused by compression of the nerve by an enlarged artery within the brain. The secondary type, about 15% of cases, is attributable to an identifiable neurologic disease such as multiple sclerosis or a brain tumor. In the idiopathic type, about 10% of cases, there is no known cause. The classical type may be treated using a vascular surgery procedure within the brain. Otherwise, the mainstays of treatment are anti-epileptic medications like carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine. Other medications such as gabapentin, pregabalin, and antidepressants have had some success. CULTIVATE PEACE “When we hold on to our opinions with aggression, no matter how valid our cause, we are simply adding more aggression to the planet, and violence and pain increase. Cultivating nonaggression is cultivating peace.” Pema Chodron, When Things Fall Apart We are all entitled to our opinions and beliefs. I am concerned about how we form opinions. What is feeding us to form an opinion about something? Is it the news media, social media, what? We have to vet the sources of information so that we can think clearly. We have to weed
out what is an opinion and what is fact so we can see intelligently rather than in a reactionary way. Really think about the whole of it and not just what someone might have said. Then move forward with an approach, not of aggression, but maybe of humor and understanding. Think back about a heated incident when you were just fired up and spewing things toward someone. Or if you never had that experience, maybe you witnessed it. Does anyone ever get anywhere? Never. Because the aggression behind the words and actions are
pollutants. Think back about an incident when you talked something through - had some space to think and then maybe talked something through. Chances are you got to some space of common ground and then you were able to move forward in whatever way. I would like to suggest that we apply this to today in light of recent events. My heart goes out to teenagers and young adults who are being manipulated by social media (see “Social Dilemma” a mustwatch documentary). They get caught up in what shows up. A friend had an encounter recently with a young adult who was curious about my friend’s counter point of view (yes, politics). She respected her, she being the aunt of her friend, so asked for my friend’s point of view. Being that it was not an aggressive argument, the young adult walked away with some thought-provoking information. In our yogic tradition, we study the Yoga Sutras which are a collection of “threads” that offer us information on the practice of living well, not only the prac-
Page 37 tice of yoga poses. The first two of the first section on ethics - the Yamas - are “ahimsa” and “satya.” “Ahimsa” translates to “nonviolence” - doing no harm. It is the practice of coming from a place of compassion for self, others, the planet. Are my thoughts, actions and deeds fostering the growth and well-being of all beings? “Satya” means “truth.” “Commitment to the truth. Truthfulness. Honest communication and action form the bedrock of any healthy relationship, community, government. When we say something, we are sure of the truth. Commitment to the truth isn’t always easy, but with practice it is a great deal less complicated and ultimately less painful than avoidance and self-deception.” (Donna Farhi, Yoga Mind, Body & Spirit). Cultivating peace in communication leads to “clear-seeing intelligence.” From there, we can make our world a better place. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be compassionate. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Wrestling And Unions By Eric Jayden
Results for the AEW Dynamite Show on November 11, 2020 from the Daily Palace in Jacksonville, Florida: Brian Cage defeated Matt Sydal. The Natural Nightmares defeated Butcher & Blade. Shawn Spears defeated Scorpio Sky. Tay Conti defeated Red Velvet. Penta El Zero M defeated Rey Fenix. The Match of the Night was Shawn Spears vs Scorpio Sky. This was a good old-fashioned wrestling match packed with moves and holes and great back and forth action. Scorpio Sky is definitely one of the underrated storytellers of our business. Professional wrestlers are classified as "Independent Contractors" and for the majority of wrestlers that are signed to contracts, they are not afforded
the rights or protections given to actual employees of a company. For years, there has been talk about creating a Union for Professional Wrestlers and efforts to organize unfortunately never materialized. As an "Independent Contractor," professional wrestlers are not afforded healthcare plans, standardized pay and many of the protections offered by state and federal labor laws. For example, if a wrestler gets sick, then he or she is responsible for their own medical expenses. Another example is if the wrestler requires time off for an emergency or personal issues, he or she can be either denied the time off or take the time off without pay. Basically, not be entitled to the protections of programs like the Family Emergency Leave Act that is afforded to many full time and part time employees across the nation. Professional wrestlers also in many situations must work
long hours and endure many days of travel without having consecutive days off like regular employees do. Those who have sought the creation of a Union wanted those same protections regular employees have, but those attempts were met with opposition from various major wrestling promotions throughout the years. Most recently, the WWE was one of those companies that released a female wrestler after she posted on Twitter her support to unionize. The wrestler was released a day after the posting, only to leave many to speculate that the WWE opposes any effort of its wrestlers to unionize. The classification of independent contractor is a subject that has been in the news media before, with many politicians speaking against companies having workers labeled as or using the term independent contractors in an attempt to avoid provid-
ing healthcare and job protections. In my opinion, having a National Union for Professional Wrestlers will be greatly beneficial so they are provided with the protections of job safety, rate of pay equality, healthcare and retirement plans. Since, pro wrestling runs throughout the year and has no off-season, having a union negotiate reasonable time off would be essential to the health and well-being of the professional wrestler. To unionize or not, that indeed is the question, and can it happen. Will it happen? Only time will tell. What's your opinion? Should wrestlers unionize?
