The Flag Was Still There‌ And Everywhere Story and Photos By Katie McFadden
On Friday, September 11, 19 years to the day her son, Firefighter Richie Allen, perished while trying to save others in the World Trade Center, Gail Allen woke up to a tribute like none other to her heroic son. Nearly 350 flags decorated the entire front lawn of her Beach 130th home; 343 for the firefighters who died that day, plus a few more for some other locals who died, like Charlie Heeran, who had worked in Cantor Fitzgerald. The flags contained the names of all. Richie Allen and Charlie Heeran’s flags decorated Allen’s planters, right in front of the home. The creative tribute was the idea of the Marquadt and Walsh families, who each year, do something for Allen to car-
ry on Richie’s memory. The night before, the families carefully placed the flags, and then reached out to Father Jim Cunningham of St. Francis de Sales, who at 12:30 a.m., came out to bless them. As Gail Allen discovered the display the next morning, she was overcome with emotion. “How unbelievable was that? I went outside and I broke down completely. It was beautiful but overwhelming,� she said. The impressive, somber display drew some passersby throughout the day. Following the annual ceremony at Tribute Park, FDNY Chief Tom Murphy stopped by to see it. In between the church bells tolling, as the breeze picked up and fluttered the flags in the silence, Murphy said, “Do you hear that? It sounds like angel wings.�

Far Rockaway Teen Makes Heroic Rescue
Justin Gavin, 18, of Far Rockaway, was in the right place at the right time when he decided to do something that would earn him the title of “hero.” On September 9, while visiting with friends in Westbury, Ct., Gavin was walking down the street when he noticed a burning car roll to a stop with a female driver inside. According to the Westbury Police Department's Capt. Michael Dasilva, “Without concern for his own safety, Justin ran over to the burning car and opened the door to allow the woman to escape.” “I was scared because I didn’t know if the car was going to explode,” Gavin said in an interview with ABC television. But he wasn’t done. After
freeing the woman, Gavin noticed three children in the car. “As the flames grew larger, Justin pulled all three kids from the car, including a one year old baby in a car seat away from the fire. The mother of the children credits Justin Gavin for saving all of their lives,” police said. Later that day, Gavin was invited to the police precinct where Chief Fernando Spagnolo presented him with a challenge coin to acknowledge his heroic act. On why he jumped into action, Gavin told ABC, "Life is too short, so I just thought if that was me in that situation, I would want someone to help me so I definitely did what I can do.”

On Friday, September 11, a young Brooklyn woman did not return home from her beach day in Rockaway. Sometime after 7 p.m., emergency services responded to a call of a swimmer in distress around Beach 86th Street. A group of surfers were able to rescue the young woman’s friend, but 21-year-old Chinnel Brown was nowhere to be seen. For more than an hour, teams on boat, helicopter, divers and others searched the waters for
the missing girl, but as darkness fell and the choppy water picked up, the search had to be called off for the night. The rescue turned into a recovery mission. On Saturday, September 12, just before 10 a.m., a call came in for a body spotted in the waters off of Beach 136th Street. NYPD confirmed to the Rockaway Times that the body recovered was that of Brown. This drowning incident comes just four days after lifeguards finished for the season.

General Absolution Do-Overs In the old days, a hindu was a do-over. You’d be playing some game and if a ball hit a crack or a stick and went out of play, somebody would call “hindu” and it meant you had to do the play over again. Why hindu? Well, what’s Hindu known for? Among other things, at the top of the list is reincarnation, probably the biggest do-over of all time. So, when the ball hit the crack, you couldn’t expect street kids to yell “reincarnation!” Do-over has three syllables and hindu only two. Abbreviation is a way of life, especially in New York, where you can tell a story but you gotta land the

plane. You can’t waste breaths and syllables. Nobody in the history of driving has ever taken the Franklin D. Roosevelt East River Drive. The George Washington Bridge is the George or the GW. The Verrazano is too long even after dropping Narrows. There’s a nickname for it but it has four syllables and is an ethnic slur and I’m not telling you, you’ll just have to ask around. I guess I’ll have to check with my Gen-Z family members if using Hindu was a bad thing. Anyway, John F. Kennedy became JFK and Laugh Out Loud is LOL. Even here,
Beach 129th Street is “twenty ninth.” Same with Beach 116th, original Rocks still call it Sixteenth. Oh, and it’s the Marine Park–not parkway¬– Bridge. Shorter is better. Which brings me back to hindu, which seems to have gone the way of box ball. Or I guess it’s been reborn as a mulligan. Although it’s been a golf term for a long time, mulligan is now used for a do-over in all walks of life. Which brings me to the pandemic. My advice? Consider granting mulligans to keep yourself sane. I know, I know, some people were born mean and rude. As infants they’d give you the death stare. They can’t speak a word of English but they’re saying loud and clear: Once I’m able to walk, once I’m out of these diapers, I’m gonna let you have it. The kid’s a timebomb. Those kids grow up getting a million second chances they don’t deserve. But I’m talking about normal, calm, reasonable people
who, well, have lost it in the last few months. I know a guy who was jogging in Brooklyn, when a young woman across the street yelled at him, “You asshole, wear a mask!” He wasn’t near anyone and there was simply no reason to wear a mask. He could’ve barked back but he wisely chalked it up to her temporary insanity. He jogged on, mentally giving her a mulligan. It was genius. Hoarders, crazy bike riders, firecracker idiots, conspiracy nuts, shamers, aggressive know-it-alls are just some of things normal people have turned in to, at least on occasion. The reason? There’s a pandemic and people are stressed. Understandably. So give ‘em a mulligan. I’m not a walking on sunshine kind of guy but I do feel the effects of reading six years of Be Well Be Happy. I now breathe deeply and give mulligans. But I’m just letting some of you know, I’ve already given you yours.

19 Years Later, Rockaway Never Forgets Nineteen years later, Rockaway hasn’t forgotten. With coronavirus scaling back this year’s 9/11 ceremony at Tribute Park, the ceremony was shorter, and the crowd was smaller, but the tribute was just as powerful. With masks on, more than 50 people gathered at the newly-renovated Tribute Park on the morning of Friday, September 11 for the annual ceremony to remember those who died that day 19 years before. of firefighters who unfolded and raised the American flag for the park. This year, roses were pre-positioned around the compass of the park to prevent crowding. However, the names of the 76 locals who died that day were read out as normal. After the brief ceremony, the attendees dispersed and Tribute Park remained open for the day to allow people to reflect on their own time. Photos by Katie McFadden.

Emergency Room Makeover At St. John’s partment said “This allows us to treat patients effectively and safely. We are witnessing the Emergency Department of the future but instead of tomorrow, that future is a reality today.” More work is to be done in phases 3 and 4 over the next several months, which will include a Behavioral Health Center and a surge unit. The
St. John’s Hospital has completed the second phase of constructions on its Emergency Department expansion project. The newly revamped department has increased in size from 10,000 square feet to 21,000 and features 18 private treatment rooms, state-of-the-art equipment including a technologically advanced CT scanner that provides detailed images to help diagnose disease and evaluate injuries. Golden Age, Sea Breeze and other senior meetings were important social functions that lift the spirits of so many who need interaction. So there’s this huge 81-acre parcel called Arverne East. Way back, in 2005, the City issued an RFP for development of the area. One requirement for bidders was taking on (paying for) the huge infrastructure makeover. Well, fifteen years later, the infrastructure costs are now being paid by the City (you the taxpayer). And the same group awarded the development is still in charge. We wonder how a new RFP was never issued. Since 2005, Rockaway has become a much more desirable place which would attract interest from a lot of developers (maybe some willing to pay for the infrastructure!). And really, a new RFP should have been issued after Sandy and after the new boardwalk. If we were one of the bidders in the first go-around, we’d ask a court for an injunction. It’s an outrage, that a development group (no matter how wonderful they might be) could sit on this property for 15 years and now make changes to the original bid without
competition. ***** Speaking of big developments, a little birdie or two told us the huge project coming to the site of the old Peninsula Hospital is in danger of grinding to a halt because the City's HPD money has dried up. Well, on Tuesday, in an article in the Commercial Observer, Daniel Moritz, a principal at the firm, Arker Companies said, “We believe in the project and we’re still investing in construction plans (but) at this point it’s an issue of funding.� ***** Thanks to James Russell for sending along an article from Newsday. It appears the town of Long Beach, right next door, is unhappy with their jetties which were installed just last year. Officials say, “jetties that were rebuilt are now separating with boulders sinking into the ocean.� The Army Corps, in response, said “the groin field is functioning as designed and functioning effectively.� *****

everyone, in person, at Temple Beth-El. - Rabbi Matt Carl **** Governor Cuomo signed legislation (S08129/A10249) reconstituting the September 11 Workers Protection Task Force. Formed in 2005, the Task Force was created to obtain data regarding adverse health effects on workers who participated in rescue, recovery and response at the World Trade Center, identify limitations of existing programs for disabilities of such workers, and make recommendations to improve access and scope of these programs. The Task Force has studied and issued reports regarding health impacts of exposure to toxins at Ground Zero, the limitations of existing laws and regulations for accidental disability retirement benefits and potential federal funding to assist the state with costs. The legislation extends the existence of the Task Force for five years through June 2025.

Dollars to Donuts: Burglars Hit Belle Harbor Dunkin By Katie McFadden
During the early morning hours of Sunday, September 13, the Dunkin Donuts located at 432 Beach 129th Street was burglarized. According to Dunkin cashier Arly Hernandez, she arrived at work to start her shift at around 5 a.m. when she noticed one of the windows of the store broken. “When I opened the door, I saw a big rock inside. I was scared. I thought they were still in there. I never in my life had seen anything like this before,” she said. After examining the store, Hernandez realized that the entire cash register was gone. Hernandez said the register contained about $100 and change and nothing else was missing. “Thankfully, it was just material possessions and that can all be replaced,” manager Ruben Rivera said. As customers arrived at Dunkin on Sunday morning, they were greeted with caution tape surrounding the store, and were redirected to the Beach 113th Street Dunkin

to pick up their orders. According to Hernandez, surveillance video showed four people throw a rock through the window sometime after 2 a.m. and the individuals helped each other through the window to enter the store. She said it was difficult to identify the four individuals on the video as they were all wearing hooded sweatshirts with the hoods up. Dunkin seems to be the only store affected. An alert on Citizen App said the nearby laundromat had been burglarized but staff and customers said nothing happened there. This incident is still being investigated. NYPD has released images of the four suspects, taken from a different location, and is offering a $2500 award for information. Anyone with information can contact the NYPD Crimestoppers hotline at 800-577-TIPS. This latest burglary comes almost two years after another burglary on Belle Harbor’s commercial block. In December 2018, Harbor Cleaners, Bon Appetit, Polly and Esther, and Sofia C. Laundromat were all burglarized. It is not clear if the incidents are connected.

NYPD Remembers 9/11 With Beachfront Ceremony Story & Photos By Katie McFadden
The NYPD hasn’t forgotten. On Friday, September 11, the NYPD’s Patrol Borough Queens South held a 9/11 Memorial Prayer ceremony on the beach to remember their fellow officers among the thousands who died that fateful day 19 years ago. Officers from Queens South, local police unions, local precincts, and the July 2001 Academy class, known as the “9/11 Class,� gathered on Beach 116th Street to remember the officers who died as heroes on September 11, 2001. They did so in front of 23 chairs. With the exception of a yellow rose on each, the chairs remained empty, in honor of the 23 NYPD officers who died on 9/11. What the NYPD did, FDNY, PAPD, all federal partners, EMS, we dug through that rubble so a family member could have something to bury, a piece of their loved one. The air that day was toxic. It’s a smell, if I catch something similar to it, brings me back to that pile, digging through the rubble with my bare hands, looking for my colleagues. That air was toxic and a lot of us are now becoming sick, dying. I’m a 9/11 cancer survivor. I

got a pretty nasty scar from my operation. The doctor said we’re willing to flatten that scar out for you and I said no, leave that scar just the way it is because it helps me remember what I did that day and the sacrifice of the people who didn’t come home that day. I don’t want to forget.” The ceremony continued with speeches by Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz, Detective Tanya Dunhaney and prayers by clergy members of all denominations. Proclamations were presented to some NYPD community partners and Priya Deberry played a rendition of “Rise Up” on the violin as an NYPD helicopter flew overhead. The ceremony ended with some of the members of the “9/11 Class” speaking of how being thrown into the fire that day, shaped their career for the years to come. At the end, those officers lit lanterns, which they released into the sky to remember their fellow fallen officers.

Remembering Richie Allen Story & Photos By Katie McFadden
For firefighter Richie Allen, surfing was everything. On September 11, 2001, the hero lost his life, but his memory has lived on for the past 16 years with the Annual Richie Allen Memorial Surf Classic. And even as the years pass, the event keeps getting bigger, showing that Richie Allen will never be forgotten. On Sunday, September 13, crowds gathered on Beach 91st Street for the 16th Annual Richie Allen Memorial Surf Classic. The usual surf contest for the kids was canceled due to coronavirus concerns, but the rough waves of the day reinforced that it was a good call. However, it didn’t stop people
from coming out to remember Richie. Despite the contest being canceled, Richie’s mother, Gail Allen, said the event was the biggest yet. “I can’t believe the amount of people here today. It was a shame we couldn’t do the contest this year, but it seems like more people came with us not doing the contest,” she said. With such big crowds, every single t-shirt for the event was sold out. All of the proceeds will go toward helping families across the peninsula who are going through a rough time. While the contest was canceled, the traditional paddle out was not. At 3 p.m., surfers gathered their boards and took to the waves to form a circle to remember Richie. As they began to splash up the water, children on the shore, who were born many years after Richie passed away, threw red carnations into the waves to remember him. To the Allen family, to see the next generation remember Richie through surfing, is what it’s all about. “It’s so nice to see the little ones being so involved in it,” Gail Allen said. “I love to see the next generation getting into it. Richie loved surfing and to him, seeing all these kids doing it, he’d love it because it was something he loved and to see it growing the way it grows is just amazing.”

One photo depicts Julio peeking out of a Call-A-Head porta-potty that Scarpitta found at a construction site in Astoria. Scarpitta’s assistant, his wife, Jussara, had the important job of propping up Julio from inside the porta-potty to create the shot. However, Jussara doesn’t mind helping behind the scenes. She’s been a big support throughout her husband’s project. “I love it, I was so impressed when he showed me some of the photos. I think it’s very creative and right for

But it hasn’t kept him from photography. “I’ve been doing this in between having a heart stent put in last year and heading for a hip replacement. Nothing stops me,” he said. Scarpitta stays motivated, documenting a historic event that has impacted thousands of New Yorkers. Having lost a cousin and a neighbor to coronavirus, Scarpitta hopes people can take a lesson from Julio. “The Zone of Avoidance is something we all had to partake in in the beginning and are continuing because we can’t behave the same way we used to, at least, not yet. Every person is dealing with this virus in their own individual way, and the only thing we can control is to wear a mask and keep your distance. I think to get through this virus, we need to make some personal sacrifices for the good of everybody, and Julio agrees with me,” Scarpitta said with a smile. “This is an unprecedented time, and no one knows where this ship is sailing. It’s all hands on deck and all masks on. Take it from my first mate, Julio.” Scarpitta hopes to give Julio a wider audience by launching

“Seein’ me and Julio down by the schoolyard”…and by Yankee stadium, the World Trade Center, the Coney Island parachute jump and even Rockaway. Julio has done more traveling around New York City than most people during the coronavirus pandemic. But he doesn’t have much to say about it. After all, Julio is a mannequin. So we let his buddy, photographer Rich Scarpitta do most of the talking when he stopped by the Rockaway Times office to let us know about Julio’s masked adventures around the city. Scarpitta, a photographer for more than 40 years, was inspired by a friend for his latest photography project, documenting the unique situation facing humanity during the
coronavirus pandemic. His friend from Tarrytown began double exposing selfies taken while walking solo through isolated environments during lockdown. Scarpitta began thinking of ways to explore this unique time, when he remembered a chrome mannequin he purchased about a decade ago. It was time for the mannequin to shine. For a project focusing on coronavirus, Scarpitta had to come up with a name for his subject. Taking inspiration from the line, “Goodbye to Rosie, the queen of Corona,” from the Paul Simon song “Me and Julio Down by the School-
yard,” Julio was born. About three months ago, with masks on, Scarpitta and Julio left their home in East Elmhurst and began their adventures all across New York City, documenting the feeling of isolation during this unique time in history when New Yorkers were urged to stay home to flatten the curve. The project would become known as “The Zone of Avoidance.” Over the last three months, Scarpitta has spent the summer traveling all across the city, to some of the most iconic locations, many that would normally be packed with people, to take photos of Julio all alone, wearing his mask. From Times Square to Radio City to the Oculus train station, to the Staten Island Ferry, Yankee Stadium, to the “Joker” steps in the Bronx, the Cyclone in Coney Island to Broad Channel and Rockaway, Julio has gotten his way around. Finding the best spots wasn’t difficult. Having done professional work for a billboard company around New York, Scarpitta knows his way around the city and served as the perfect tour guide. Through a camera lens, Scarpitta has documented the journey along the way. Of course, Julio couldn’t miss Rockaway Beach, which Scarpitta has been visiting since he was a teenager. Among some of the local spots, Julio visited surfers on the beach, the concessions, the iconic bus stops along Shore Front Parkway,

Coffee and tea are among the most popular beverages worldwide and contain substantial amounts of caffeine, making caffeine the most widely consumed psychoactive agent. A variety of plants contain caffeine in their seeds, fruits, and leaves. Besides coffee and tea, these plants include cacao beans (an ingredient of chocolate), yerba matte leaves (used in herbal tea), and guarana berries (used in various beverages and supplements). Caffeine can be synthesized and is added to foods and beverages, including soft drinks, energy drinks, energy shots, and tablets sold to reduce fatigue. Caffeine and analgesics are used together in some pain medications, for example headache medications. Coffee and tea have been consumed for hundreds of years and have become part of cultural traditions and social

Coffee and Tea – Good for Thee life. In the U.S., 85% of adults consume caffeine daily, and the average intake is 135 mg a day, roughly equivalent to 1.5 standard cups of coffee (standard being 8 oz). As for caffeine content, 12 oz of brewed coffee shop coffee has 235 mg of caffeine, 1 oz of espresso has 63 mg, 8 oz of black tea has 47 mg, and 12 oz of a cola soft drink has 32 mg. Concerns have long existed that coffee and caffeine may be harmful, but recent research has uncovered evidence of health benefits. Coffee contains hundreds of other biologically active ingredients including phytochemicals, melanoidins, the alkaloid trigonelline, and magnesium, potassium, and niacin (vitamin B3). These compounds reduce oxidative stress, improve the composition of gut microbes, and modulate glucose and fat metabolism. In contrast, the diterpene cafestol, which is present in unfiltered coffee, may raise cholesterol levels. Thus, re-
search findings for coffee and caffeine-containing beverages should be interpreted carefully, since effects seen may not be due to caffeine itself. Consumption of two to five standard cups of coffee per day has been associated with reduced mortality in studies done across the world, especially in people of European, African American, and Asian descent. With consumption of more than five cups a day, the risk of death was similar to the risk seen in non-coffee users, after adjustment for confounding factors like smoking. Interestingly enough, consumption of caffeinated coffee and decaffeinated coffee were similarly associated with reduced risk of death from any cause, suggesting that the benefits of coffee consumption were not associated with caffeine. A large body of evidence suggests that consumption of caffeinated coffee, the main source of caffeine intake in adults in the U.S., does not in-
crease the risk of heart disease and cancer. In fact, consumption of two to five standard cups of coffee daily has consistently associated with a decreased risk of several chronic diseases. However, high caffeine intake can have various adverse effects, and limits of 400 mg per day for adults who are not pregnant or lactating and 200 mg a day for pregnant and lactating women have been recommended. Current evidence does not recommend caffeine or coffee intake for disease prevention but suggests that, for adults who are not pregnant or lactating and who do not have specific health conditions, moderate consumption of coffee and tea can be a part of a healthy lifestyle. Dealing with Uncertainty Everything is uncertain. We hear everyone saying “during these uncertain times . . . “. When you think about it, everything is always uncertain even if we think the light will always go on when we flip the switch, or someone will call, or a check will come when expected. The level of uncertainty right now, however, seems to be unprecedented. If we could only be sure one way or another, we could deal with it. With this heightened uncertainty comes anxiety which takes form in one way or an-
other. For some, it is prevalent and evident. In others, it is a little hidden and underlying. In either case, we shouldn’t ignore it. How to deal with it? Here are some tools that can help. Find comfort in planning and doing something within your control. Prepare a special meal or dessert. Research how to make something and make it. Plan a garden patch for the next season. Create a breathing practice and do it every time you have a few minutes. Breathing in for
six counts, breathing out for six counts (or whatever you are comfortable with). Start like that with the inhalations and exhalations at the same duration. Then make the exhalations longer. Very calming. Do a walking meditation. Just walk to walk and feel the breath sensation. Read a feel good book or one on a subject in which you’re interested. Get lost in the words and visualize the scenery and people. Watch a feel good movie. Get lost in the story, no thinking, just watch and feel. Play a game with a child. Children bring laughter, joy and a sense of wonder. Make music, sing and dance. If you have an instrument, just play. If you like to sing, put on a playlist, sing and dance along. Simplify. Simplify whatever starts to become too much in your home and office and surround yourself with things that bring a smile to your face. Our environments deeply affect our well-being. With all of the above we are

By Beth Hanning Driving Etiquette Driving in Rockaway has become a sport. A sport I have told many that I do not participate in on the busy weekends as it is too stressful. People in New York, especially Rockaway and Broad Channel, need to learn how to drive. What people also need to do is to learn simple driver’s etiquette. 1) Do not tailgate. It is not just rude, it is actually a violation. The law says to leave an adequate amount of space. Keep in mind that another vehicle should be able to occupy the space

in-between you and the car in front of you. And let’s be honest, if you tailgate most people, especially me, I will just go slower and just make you angrier. 2) Passing cars. Recently a truck doing roadwork was double parked on the eastbound side of Rockaway Beach Boulevard. I was driving west. I had the right of way to continue driving as my lane was not blocked. A young lady in a black Volvo crossover sped right by the truck almost hitting me. That was not the best part, the best
part was she was waving and yelling at me for thinking I had the right of way‌.I did. Another morning while driving to Riis Park for pilates, a truck was driving slowly on Rockaway Beach Boulevard. The driver in front of me tried to go into the bike lane on the right side to go around. There was a man on a bike and the driver almost hit the cyclist. 3) Stop signs. Another law that is often violated in our town is the stop sign. I am unsure why people do not feel the need to stop. As I have mentioned many times, I live on Newport and it is the “Newport 500â€? with cars speeding and then on the cross streets, people do not stop for the stop signs which is a recipe for disaster. My husband rides his bike to work and he says the most dangerous part is Newport Avenue. 4) Merging. Why do people feel the need to speed up once you put on your signal to change lanes? I have a
friend from work who came to pick me up to drive me to The Bungalow Bar. We were trying to merge from Newport onto Beach Channel Drive. She is a 50ish year old women and said she had never not had a man let her merge in all of her years driving. Come on Rockaway drivers, I was embarrassed. 5) Left lane. I know in Rockaway, most of our roads are now one lane in each direction but this seems to be something many drivers do not know: The left lane is for passing. If you are driving on the “strip� on Cross Bay Boulevard and you are in the left lane driving below the speed limit, you do not know what you are doing. Get over to the right. And if I am in the right lane, again do not tailgate me. I have seen the error of my ways and I now drive much slower than I used to. I leave for work and appointments early so I am not driving like a maniac (like many people every day on the strip.)

the streets of Chelsea was like trying to perambulate through Calcutta in the old days, and I mean no offense to Calcutta. Mother Theresa would have had a field day in Chelsea as there are more homeless there than there are homeowners. How did this get like this? I understand the pandemic, but is there no management of this city at all? Don’t they care about the people who have to live and work here, raise kids here, have some quality of life? And speaking of city management, what do you have to do to get a permit to do construction in New York? I think all you have to do is just ask. There are more street and building construction sites than at any other time I remember. I am happy
right? Or maybe it is a circus and the clowns are running the show. We were damn lucky to have lived through twenty years of safe streets, subways, buses in a growing well-managed metropolis. It took seven years to change all that. I dread the next year, because if the Mayor didn’t care about the last seven years, he will never care about the last one of his administration. And the Governor is just as bad, taking every opportunity to blame everyone except himself. And where is the hope? Where is the shining star coming to lead us back to normalcy and safety? In an unusual state of pessimism, I really don’t see one yet. The only good thing is that
that it is gainful employment to so many, but how in God’s good earth are you supposed to navigate them. Shouldn’t someone be managing them so that one site doesn’t lead into the other? I am not a Democrat or a Republican, and frankly couldn’t care less what party was in charge, as long as they do the right thing and make the city safe, inviting, easy to navigate. And by easy to navigate I don’t mean for bikes, scooters, mini-cycles, unicycles, etc…. I mean it’s a city, not a circus,
Rockaway remains a refuge from the madness. Did someone say rock jetties are coming? Thank God for that at least! Maybe I should have a Snickers bar?

Those who know me, know that I love our city and consider it to be the greatest city on earth. Not that I have visited every city on earth and can make that claim with verifiable proof, I just know it in my bones. But recently I have had some ominous feelings about our city. I’m usually the first to shrug off all the bad karma that has been happening. And I agree that there is a lot of awful stuff happening living within this science-fiction-pandemic movie with political and anarchist side plots everywhere. Driving through Manhattan recently brought tears to my eyes as to how things could have gotten so bad so fast. Or maybe it has been slowly eroding, not unlike my basketball and cognitive abilities, over the last seven years under our Marxist Mayor and Fascist Governor. Roads that once accommodated several lanes of traffic to move cars through the arteries of NY are now narrowed to one or two lanes as bus lanes, bike lanes and poorly engineered off-the-curb parking has replaced them. Not to mention the Citi-Bike stands and outdoor dining construction. I tried driving from downtown to Chelsea and couldn’t believe how long it took. I made the mistake of remembering that at one time in my youth, it was possible to park
on the street in Manhattan, but after looking at the street signs about traffic I realized that I didn’t have the PhD necessary to interpret what the hell they all meant. I was born and raised here, and I don’t understand when and where it’s legal to park, how the hell does some newcomer from Kansas figure it out? You got me! I finally gave up and threw the car in a lot for a few hours figuring I didn’t need the $60 anyway, and the poor lot owner was probably going to be out of business soon anyhow. Walking

As everyone is well aware, the year 2020 has been a rife with possibly the worst series of events to occur in recent memory. COVID-19 has managed to force us to stay home, killed hundreds of thousands of people world-wide and has shutdown the world economy. In the midst of the muck and mire of the present state of affairs, there seems like there was nothing to look forward to on a local level for the last six months, until this past weekend. As a car guy, one of the highlights of my summer was to cross the Marine Parkway Bridge and attend the Brooklyn Car Club’s massive car show at Floyd Bennet Field. Unfortunately, because of COVID-19, that show was required to be cancelled and the prospective attendees were left in a lurch. In order to get your “car fix,” you had to travel to Long Island in order to ‘socially distance’ yourself with
your fellow car-brethren and their rides at a Cars and Coffee. In the middle of March, I asked my father why Rockaway never really had a vintage car show “scene,” despite the number of vintage rides tooling around the neighborhood. It seems while some have tried to put such a gathering together, it never really jelled (That is until last Sunday, September 13). If one puts on their running shoes and takes a jog around the peninsula, they will see 500 horsepower Chev-
elles, cheerful MG’s, sinister Ford Falcons, a Plymouth Barracuda, McLarens and other well preserved vintage rides, taken care of by their loving owners. While seeking out the owners and the cars to attend would not be a problem, acquiring an appropriate local venue was of prime importance. Armed with the knowledge that a group of vintage car owners would be taking over their space, Carol and Scott DeNaro of Harbor Optics Family Eye Car Center, were
more than happy to host this informal meetup of some two dozen cars, owner and spectators. For two hours on a bright September Sunday morning and amongst the talk of horsepower, cams, engine displacement, quarter-mile times, and future build plans, the world was right on its’ axis and everyone was genuinely happy. The camaraderie amongst and between the expert wrenchers (socially distanced of course) was clearly present to celebrate their automotive passion. The two hours flew by and goodbyes were said without a single burn out made in the parking lot. We hope to return with more beautiful cars in early October for another Sunday morning of coffee and conversation. Please feel free to share your car with the rest of Rockaway. This event could not have happened without the host space provided by Carol and Scott DeNaro, and the organizing efforts of Pat and Kyle Mammes.

CB 14 Parks Committee Nature Preserve Meeting Recap By Marina Cregan On Thursday, September 10, the Parks Department hosted a virtual meeting discussing the Arverne East Nature Preserve Project. The original proposal for the Arverne East Project was made back in 2005. However, the original proposal did not satisfy many community members, causing a delay of the project. Arverne East is the area bounded to the north by Rockaway Beach Blvd., Edgemere Avenue, and to the east by Beach 32nd Street to the boardwalk, and to the west by Beach 56th Place. In September 2005, the city’s Housing and Preservation Department (HPD), issued the original Request For Proposal (RFP) for Arverne East. The RFP stated that Arverne East covers approximately 81 acres, with about 47 acres of land left that can be developed. In the original RFP, the primary goal was to establish a retail or commercial and recreation development
project. One retail or commercial development would include a nationally known hotel chain. The RFP also stated that the developers and their subcontractors must hire about 25 percent of local construction workers. Because of the provision stating that at least 25 percent of local construction workers must be employed in the process of building these developments, the HPD strongly encouraged local vendors and businesses to supply the development team and their subcontractors. Community Board 14 (CB14) had approved these provisions to the RFP, but strongly disagreed with HPD when they amended the RFP to include affordable housing. When the original RFP was
sent to CB14, board members were surprised at the provision regarding affordable housing. This provision stated that 20 percent of the total number of housing units must be affordable to households with incomes no greater than 130 percent of Area Median Income, which would equal to a combined annual income of about $82,000. However, this provision went against everything that CB14 had initially approved. The HPD agreed to hold future meetings to discuss this provision, however, the meeting held by the Parks Department on September 10, did not discuss anything regarding affordable housing. A major concern CB14 had during this meeting was seeing that the original RFP had included many changes that were never conveyed to CB14. Despite the fact affordable housing was never discussed, the original RFP required that the
developers of this land must pay for a nature preserve, which will take up 35-acres of this project. However, the city has now decided to take over full funding, rather than the developers. The cost for the Arverne East Nature Preserve will require over $20 million. This came as a surprise to District Manager, Jonathan Gaska, considering the city is debating laying off over 20,000 people, and issuing severe budget cuts from city funding. The new plans also state that there will be a little over $80 million new subsidies that were not included in the original plan. Overall, the meeting did not leave community members encouraged regarding the Arverne East Nature Preserve. Because of the additional changes to the original RFP, CB14 has requested the Parks Department to attend their next virtual CB14 meeting on October 13, so they can provide updates on the existing RFP, in hopes that the community’s requests have been made.

The Rockaway Times Directions: Spray crockpot with cooking spray. Add the onions, celery, mushrooms and sweet potatoes. Melt stick of butter with garlic under a low flame. In a medium bowl, mix the mushroom soup with the sherry. Pour the garlic and butter into the bowl with the soup and sherry. Mix thoroughly. Pour sauce over chicken. Cook on high 4-5 hours or on low 7 hours. Enjoy!

Results from the NXT Super Tuesday Show on September 8, 2020 from the Amway Center in Orlando Florida: Finn Balor defeated Adam Cole to capture the NXT Championship. Velveteen Dream defeated Ashantee ‘Thee’ Adonis. Bronson Reed defeated Austin Theory. Roderick Strong defeated Killian Dain. Rhea Ripley defeated Mercedes Martinez. The match of the night was Rhea Ripley vs Mercedes Martinez in a Steel Cage Match. Both wrestlers definitely gave it their all in this match and there was no holding back. In the end, Rhea Ripley came out of the cage the winner of this hard-fought match. As the pandemic continues throughout the world, the future pro wrestling operations were still
up in the air until most recently as All Elite Wrestling (AEW) started to allow fans to attend their Weekly TV taping in a limited capacity. Before AEW there was New Japan Pro Wrestling who was the first top branded company to allow fans to attend shows anywhere in the world but none of the companies in the United States allowed it at the time. This is a big step for AEW as a company as they will be providing special suites at their
stadium with plastic barricades to help keep social distancing and the fans will be required to wear masks at all times. Intensive cleaning also be conducted and fans who fail to adhere to the rules will be ejected from the show. Which brings me to the topic of the column "Wrestling ‘n Fans" which both go hand-in-hand. The WWE still doesn't allow fans to attend shows and continues with its Thunderdome concept
with virtual fans at all their TV tapings. I am very happy to see fans finally being allowed to attend wrestling shows and hope that the other wrestling companies follow suit very soon. The question of the week comes from Wrestling Goku (That's the name he gave me) in Belle Harbor and he asked, "Have you seen a Cartoon Anime influence in pro wrestling?" Yes, I have Wrestling Goku. The Dragon Ball Saiyan character has inspired a whole sort of wrestlers to either use the Saiyan name, fighting style or Saiyan appearance and incorporated it as part of their character.
