Coronavirus Victims Remembered On Sunday, August 30, the community was invited to Beach 17 th Street to join the 101 st Precinct in remembering the hundreds of neighbors and thousands more lost to Covid-19. Guests were asked to wear white and join for a candle
lighting and lantern ceremony. With a few photos from the ceremony, the 101 st Precinct took to social media to post, “The Lanterns will fade but our Loved Ones Legacy will live on forever.”

A Weight is Lifted For Some Gyms By Katie McFadden
The weight is over…for some. After more than five months of being closed due to coronavirus, and the threat of a lawsuit, some gyms in New York City were given the green light to open on Wednesday, September 2. However, with limits in place, not all gyms are so lucky. Rockaway’s Burn Fitness is among some of the gyms that were able to open on Wednesday, with many restrictions in place. When gyms were forced to close in March, Burn Fitness owner Shaun Cerrone, never stopped working. Determined to keep those in Rockaway fit at a time when staying healthy became even more important, with obesity putting people at higher risk of dying from coronavirus, Cerrone wanted to ensure Rockaway had a way to work out if they were willing. He and other instructors offered socially-distanced outdoor classes, for free, to give back to the community. However, with
gyms being a high rent, low payroll business, Cerrone was among gym owners who were determined to get their doors open. He started preparing to open as New York entered Phase 4, but that green light never came. Cerrone became part of the New York Fitness Coalition (NYFC), a group of more than 1,500 New York gym owners, which ultimately filed a lawsuit against the state to reopen their
businesses as the financial burden became too heavy, with no hope of opening in sight. The lawsuit lit a fire. A few days after the lawsuit was filed in early August, Cuomo hastily announced that gyms would be allowed to open, with limits, as early as August 24, or as late as September 2. For New York City, Mayor de Blasio held out, stalling gym openings until the final deadline of September 2. On Wednesday, Cerrone

opened Burn Fitness, with not only the state requirements for reopening in place, but with a set of extra precautions recommended by the NYFC, in the hopes that those doors won’t have to close again. “Our protocols go far beyond what the state requires because we’re holding ourselves accountable and trying to make it clear that we take this seriously and will do whatever it takes to keep our customers safe,” Cerrone said. Among the state requirements they’re following is reducing capacity to 33%. Burn Fitness’ check-in system has been capped to make sure capacity stays under 33%. Machines have been blocked off to allow for social distancing. Masks will be required at all times, and they can’t include bandanas. The gym will be regularly cleaned, something Cerrone says is done regardless to combat other germs related to MRSA (staph) and the flu. Going

To start, Burn Fitness will also operate on a limited schedule and will phase into more regular hours after Labor Day. While Cerrone says he’s happy to open in some capacity, with indoor fitness classes being a big part of his business, it still isn’t enough. “The mayor has put a hold on indoor fitness classes, which is an integral part of my business model,” Cerrone said. Instead, Burn Fitness is offering limited outdoor classes. As part of Governor Cuomo’s announcement to reopen gyms, localities were given the ability to make the call on when indoor fitness classes can resume. De Blasio hasn’t given any word on when this may happen. For some gyms, indoor classes

From six-foot dividers, to sanitizer dispensers to even preparing to cut class size from the possible 33 student capacity to 11, Ruderman was ready to go. She even sent out an email to members about being able to reopen on August 24, when Governor Cuomo announced the possibility. The announcement was premature. “Six hours later, I realized I spoke too soon,” Ruderman said. With no word of when indoor classes may resume, Ruderman is left hanging. “I’m just waiting around like a puppy and there’s been no word,” Ruderman said. “I’m stuck in limbo. I feel defeated, depressed, anxious, just over not knowing. It’s like they’re dangling the carrot all the way over there and my feet are in concrete. I want to be back for the people because everyone misses everyone.” Since having to close in March, Hot Yoga has been offer-
ing classes via Zoom, but without the heated room that makes hot yoga what it is, and without that personal connection, Ruderman says it isn’t the same. “I miss that physical contact and people laughing and that shared energy and it’s really different when you’re looking at a twoby-two screen,” she said. “We have a core group on Zoom, but you need that human contact. We spent 10 years putting a lot of time and effort into building this business and we created such a beautiful environment and have such a nice vibe with people coming from all walks of life and people have been grateful that we’re here. We want that feeling back and I don’t know what’s going to happen.” According to Cerrone, the NYFC, which Ruderman is also a part of, will be filing another lawsuit, against the City of New York and Mayor de Blasio, if he doesn’t announce plans to reopen indoor fitness classes by September 2. We attempted to reach out to the Rockaway YMCA about their opening plans but did
not receive an answer by press time. According to the YMCA website, limited YMCA branches will begin to open in phases starting September 8. Rockaway's branch will open Tuesday, September 15. When it reopens, masks will be required at all times. Social distance will be enforced, and equipment will be spaced out to allow for this. Wiping down equipment and using sanitizer will be encouraged. Reduced capacity will be enforced and only members 18+ will be allowed in the first two phases. Temperature checks will be conducted and anyone over 100.4 degrees will not be permitted. If there is a wait for cardio equipment, people will be given a 30-minute time limit. As per the city rules, group classes and pool use will not be permitted right away, but when they are, reservations will be required. In the meantime, the YMCA has limited outdoor and online classes to help people stay fit. For more information on YMCA openings, refer to YMCANYC.org

And here are a couple of Labor Day facts: Labor Day was first celebrated in 1882 and it’s the third most popular day for a cookout. Can you guess the first two? ***** Referring to our cover this week, as of right now, the last day for lifeguards is Monday, September 7, as was planned for the abbreviated season due to coronavirus. However, with school now starting later, the beach season could be extended. ***** The Rockaway Mutual Aid (RMA) network put a community fridge at Beach 91st Street off Rockaway Beah Boulevard. Such fridges are stocked with foods

There was an uproar online, but the move seems to have resulted in a big increase in donations and volunteers for the RMA. Another fridge, located on 69-62 Almeda Avenue in Arverne, has been operating since July without incident. You can find RMA online at RockawayMutualAid.com ***** More than 300 restaurants have joined a class-action lawsuit due to the city’s ongoing indoor dining ban. We hope this compels the governor and mayor to lighten up and allow the city to have indoor dining. With restrictions, New Jersey is now allowing indoor dining. Long Island and Upstate NY have had indoor dining for weeks. New York City restaurants face peril as the cooler weather arrives. Indoor dining is not just a benefit for customers and restaurant owners. Cooks, waiters, dishwashers, and others need the work. Desperately.
***** The Rockaway Hotel is looking good as finishing touches are applied. The New York Times ran an article recently with the headline: Is Opening a Hotel in Rockaway Beach Right Now a Good Idea? The writer did a good job hiding some good stuff like the rooftop, decks, and outdoor pool and the Tubridy’s hospitality successes elsewhere. She did mention the LaQuinta Inn at Beach 43rd Street and the long gone Boatel at Marina 59 as failed attempts to make Rockaway an overnight destination. Talk about apples to oranges. There are way too many things to list why those comparisons are ridiculous. The Rockaway Hotel faces challenges because of the pandemic but that’s gonna end and the place will thrive. Here’s to a great run! ***** Breezy Pointer Tom Sullivan announced that he will challenge Joe Addabbo Jr. again for a seat in the state senate on November 3. Senate terms are for two years. He lost to Addabbo in 2018, getting 35% of the vote.

Recent Crime Stats Revealed at 100th Pct Meeting By Katie McFadden th
The latest 100 Precinct Community Council meeting focused on crime stats and updates on our beaches. More than 30 people gathered for the virtual Zoom meeting held on Wednesday, August 26. Rockaway Parks Administrator Eric Peterson was on hand to give some updates about the beaches and parks. He said that unlike the past few years, the beach season will come to an end on Labor Day, September 7. He said the beach saw a heavy increase in visitorship this year, with most weekends in July looking like July 4, and most weekdays seeing weekend crowds, but visitorship has started to taper off. Next, 100th Precinct Executive Officer Jeremy Kivlin introduced himself. Kivlin, who has spent many years working in Queens, is relatively new to the 100th Precinct. “I’ve been in Queens for quite some time and now I’m in the 100th and I have to say I’m really happy to be here and
everybody I’ve met so far, including the residents of the 100th Precinct, and the officers have been great,” he said before going into crime stats over the last 28 days. Overall, there was a slight decrease in crime by 2%, meaning there were 44 crimes in the last 28 days compared to 45 the same period last year. Most of that crime is attributed to grand larcenies, of which there were 18 incidents, followed by felony assaults, of which there were 12. For grand larcenies, there has been an increase in thefts from vehicles. There were seven in this period compared to three last year. Among items stolen were credit cards, electronics and
currency. Kivlin advised people to not leave vehicles unlocked, and to not leave items in plain view inside cars. There were seven incidents of unattended grand larcenies such as package theft, or unattended items left by people on the beach. For package thefts, Kivlin advised people to set up security cameras. For grand larcenies from a person, Kivlin described an incident in which a cell phone was stolen from a person on the A train in Broad Channel. The train was later stopped, and the people involved were arrested. The remaining grand larceny incidents involved phone scams. Kivlin advised people not to give out personal or financial information on the phone without validating the call, or to simply hang up. Felony assault is up by one, to 12 incidents this year. Seven are close to arrest. Five are domestic violence-related. The most notable assault was a nonfatal shooting on Friday, August 14 by Beach 84th Street. The victim was
shot in the thigh. This is being investigated. Robberies are up 100% with six incidents this period. One started as shoplifting at 70-20 Rockaway Beach Blvd and led to a robbery. An arrest was made. Another involved an armed commercial robbery at 87-18 Rockaway Beach Blvd. Other incidents include bike robberies, and one incident of a dog being stolen from Beach 110th Street on July 29. An arrest was made and the dog was returned. Burglary rates remain the same with seven incidents this period. No arrests have been made. This included a truck burglary, three commercial burglaries and three residential. Grand larceny auto incidents have improved, with zero this period as opposed to six the same time last year. Finally, Kivlin spoke about a recent successful gun buyback program, in which 45 guns were turned in. The next 100th Precicnt Community Council meeting will be September 30.

Never Forgotten: How 9/11 Sparked a Family Reunion By Katie McFadden
Not long after September 11, 2001, a day that changed America forever, Debra McCarthy was at One Police Plaza. She had recently returned to work after maternity leave from the NYPD’s undercover narcotics division. In a twist of fate, McCarthy had originally been scheduled to return to work on September 11. But after being unable to find childcare, her husband, FDNY Battalion Commander Thomas McCarthy, suggested she take an extra week off. On September 11, her husband also had the day off. That fateful day, Debra would lose 12 people that she knew. Her husband lost 75. That tremendous loss was felt in the weeks after when McCarthy noticed a face that caught her eye at One Police Plaza. A woman, dressed in full uniform, who looked like her. “It was so startling. Nobody had ever looked like me. I told my coworkers that sergeant looks like me, and they agreed. They said it was Sergeant Mary Young. Sgt. Young was going to a funeral for both of her cousins who had worked at Cantor Fitzgerald and died on 9/11—Peter Milano and Patrick Sullivan of Breezy Point. Not wanting to disturb her, Debra didn’t say anything to Mary. But after a time of such great loss, seeing a familiar-looking face set her on a path to recovering her own losses. McCarthy, who had been adopted, didn’t know much about her birth parents other than her mother was a security trader. The thought that maybe her birth mother had also worked in the World Trade Center, had crossed her mind. At age 31, McCarthy began the search for her birth family. Starting with the place where she was first put in the care of the sisters of Angel Guardian Home in Brooklyn, McCarthy began her search. An online search then connected her to a group called Search Angels. Through them, she was able to locate her birth mother, Maureen, who in turn, connected her to her birth father, Charles Sullivan. After all, Maureen still had his number. Although the couple was no longer together, every year on the birth-

The Naturalist’s Corner CLAMS, CLAMS AND CLAMS! By Jennifer Porcheddu
She sells seashells by the seashore… I still get tongue-tied with that one! Scallops, mussels, jingles, cockles, oysters, clams, and whelks are favorites to collect here on Rockaway Beach. They each deserve attention that we can give them in future columns, but today let’s give a little personality to three of our famous bivalve buddies: the Surf Clam, the Quahog, and the Coquina. These guys have a lot in common. They are good eating (and legal to harvest here!) They are filter feeders, taking water and plankton in through their incurrent siphon, and releasing through their excurrent siphon. In the process, they help clean our waters—but at a cost: they often assimilate the toxins into fatty deposits within their bodies. All three are broadcast spawners: when conditions are right,

develop, and grow. And shockingly enough, this method works, considering these three species’ populations are doing pretty well right now. So let’s start with the Atlantic Surf Clam: Spisula solidissima. These big guys are favorites for children to use as shovels, paint, or even turn into ashtrays back in the day. They thrive in our region because of the sandy substrates and moving water. However, their range has moved further offshore since the early 2000s as shallow water temperatures increase. I enjoy using these in my classroom, because their large size and clear markings make it easy to teach about the anatomy of bivalves. Atlantic Surf Clams are an incredibly important fishery, some estimate this harvest accounts for 70% of the shellfish trade in the United States. You will notice that some days when you go to the beach, there are great many of these washed ashore. Can you make a note of these dates in your naturalist’s journal? What were the weather and ocean conditions like before so many surf clams appeared on shore? Another wonderful Rockaway local with great historical significance is the Quahog. It is similar in shape to the Surf Clam, but is typically smaller, heavier, and
most importantly, has purple markings on its interior ridge. We live in an area that once belonged to the Recouwacky people. We still use their name for this clam (and our hometown) today. Further, the Quahog was the source of wampum: the colored portions of the shell were carved into beads (a difficult task) and used for trade (similar to how we use paper notes to represent our money). In fact, the Quahog’s scientific name: Mercenaria mercenaria, comes from the same Latin root word as ‘commerce.’ We see these somewhat less frequently than the Surf Clam on our beaches, because they prefer denser substrate, so you will also find them in the mud on the bayside of our peninsula. It might be fun to select an area on the beach and an equally sized area on the bay, and compare types and numbers of seashells you find! Finally, let’s talk about my favorite, the Coquina (Donax fossor)! We often come across these itsy-bitsy friends at the shoreline while digging for sand crabs. They are very small, less than 0.5”, and come in a variety of colors. They are similar in shape to a Surf Clam, but they are not babies; this is their full size! The best part about these clam relatives is observing their behaviors. As soon as they are revealed by a wave sweeping the sand away, they stick out their little foot, and burrow into the sand, leaving two tiny tubes protruding above the surface. These are their siphons, through which they feed and excrete. My nephews enjoy Coquina races: after catching a few, they take bets on which will burrow the most quickly! Hypothesize: is there a pattern to which ones win? Does the size matter? The color? In which conditions do they bury themselves most quickly? Ode To Summer As we sit and enjoy the last few days of summer and savor the fact that because of the calendar, we actually get an extra week due to Labor Day arriving late this year, I think we should give a shout out to all of the things we have enjoyed this summer. 1. My electric bicycle. My husband first purchased one for himself and since I could not keep up with him, I received one too! It is a great mode of transportation and I truly enjoy it. 'pods' of four teams at each basket with special precaution protocols due to COVID-19. Eight pods competed during each of three 'windows' beginning at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. A final window of four pods began at 5 p.m. but unfortunately did not complete play due to the weather. Each window began with a recollection of the life of Clare Droesch, who died two years ago after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Clare was a legendary basketball player at St. Camillus and St. Francis de Sales, Christ the King HS, and Boston College. She also had great impact as a coach at Vanderbilt and St. John's on the collegiate level, and Scholars' Academy, St. Edmund Prep, and back at Christ the King High School. Her impact outside of basketball was just as strong but she always loved to work with and encourage younger players, and the 3 on 3 by the Sea is one of the many ways she did that. Proceeds from the event now support scholarships and pro-
grams at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy, Christ the King High School, and Boston College. It was a great day of spirited play in her memory, and among the 24 champions were Crown Lightning Hounds- Lauren Hammersley, Meghan Anderson, Riley Weiss, and Olivia Agunzo in the Women's Open division, and Jameson's Pub-Patrick Goldberg, Alex Goldberg, John Whelan, and Greg Thompson in the Men's Open division. The Droesch family and the 3 on 3 committee would like to thank all who supported the event including the officials and scorekeepers who volunteered throughout the day, St. Francis de Sales parish and academy, The Graybeards, Rockaway W.I.S.H., Joe Connolly, and all the players who honored Clare's memory by their participation. Ancestral Plots By Lou Pastina
Recently the mermaid was going through some documents and came across four documents that were not immediately clear as to what they were. They all seemed to be deeds for plots in Calvary cemetery. The mermaid descendants, on her mother’s side, from a long line of Hendersons. An Ancestry.com search years ago confirmed
that the Hendersons were a mix of Irish, Scottish and British ancestry, but we could not go back any further than early 1900s when the family ran a funeral parlor on the West Side of Manhattan. That was a good business to be in, then and now, because as they say, people are just dying to get in. And if you were Irish and on the West Side of Manhattan in those days, owning a funeral business was the
equivalent of owning a bar in Rockaway. Upon inspection of the documents, we realized that two were in the name of Henderson, one in the name of Monahan and one in the name of Slevin. The mermaid had never heard of any Monahans or Slevins in the family tree, but who knows. The fascinating one was David Henderson which dated 8/3/1861. So, it would appear that some of the mermaid’s relatives were here back in the Civil War days. Research-
The Rockaway Times ing the plots through Calvary’s website, we came to realize that the four plots were spread across three of Calvary’s four cemeteries, all located in North Queens. So, I took a ride to see what was up with David Henderson. As expected, David was not speaking, and in fact David’s headstone was not in the place that the deed said. Upon inspection of the other sites, the same was true. Those other sites were all dated in the very early 1900s. Since the Greenpoint Avenue office was closed due to Covid, I went to the other office on the other side of the Kosciusko Bridge. That office was closed too, but a very nice person there gave me some interesting information. I asked if the deeds I had were valid, and she said yes, they were. Since I am always planning, I asked if we held the deeds, could we put people in them? The economics of dying today is a lot higher than Continued on page 23

Well she said, I needed to research how many people were in those graves, but given the dates, she said there was probably plenty of room! This was starting to feel like finding $100 bills on the ground with no one around. But she said there is a fee for doing that research, and you will have to send the information to them, and they will do it. But you can just call first and they will tell you whether it’s worth doing. She then said there is a bigger issue though. And I asked, ok what is it? It seems that if you buy a plot with perpetual care, they will mow the grass and take care of the plot forever. But if you don’t, there is an annual fee, and if you wanted to activate the plot you would have to pay back fees. I did some quick math and realized the 1861 plot might require 159 years of maintenance. But depending
on how much a year, it might be cheaper than buying a plot. Listen, we all got to plan for a final resting place. The mermaid has already told me two things: she is going before me, and she wants to be cremated. I told her no to both! So, the 1861 plot is on a hill off Greenpoint avenue with wonderful views of Manhattan and Greenpoint, and everyone wants to live in Greenpoint these days. The 1861 deed was also issued by old St. Patrick’s on Mulberry Street, before the seat of the diocese moved to Fifth Avenue. Being a lover of history and cemeteries, and a Greenpointer, this seems like the perfect place. Now if I can only come up with the 159 years of back fees, I’ve got a place to rest. Forever!

Experience Life The other morning a hummingbird came near. I was sitting outside at a table in the center of which is a plant with clusters of yellow and white flowers. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of something coming near, then in full view and going toward the flower, a hummingbird blur. It came and went quickly. In the afternoon, I was sitting in the same place and less than about 15 inches away from my face to the yellow and white flowers came
the hummingbird again with its soft green coloration on its back—so small and gentle even though it was whizzing to keep flying as it “beaked” each little blossom. It was not moving as quickly as earlier so I was able to see it very clearly. I held my breath, didn’t move and watched in awe at this unusual occurrence. I had several moments of enjoying the experience. I couldn’t move to get my phone to take a photo to show everyone. I was in the moment
of the experience and I have the option of sharing the experience, telling the story—very different than taking the photo opp. In this column, we’ve talked about slowing down and being in the moment. Experiencing events— using all of the senses—and later relating them in a story keeps our minds and hearts engaged. We often run to get our phones to take a photo to share via text or social media, but we are missing out on the experience when we do so. It’s more like an observation or exposure to something rather than a full awareness and full participation in the event. The experience also inspired me to read about the symbolism of this special bird. They have meaning in many different cultures. Many see the hummingbirds as symbols of hope and bringers of love, good luck and joy. How great to be visited twice with this message! On that same day in early evening, I went for a low tide walk and saw the sandpi-

I once read a piece on the meaning of sandpipers: they are at the threshold between earth and ocean constantly moving back and forth as if they are grounded in the physical earth and at the same time at the edge of the infinite ocean. I took my time that day to follow them and enjoy the experience of seeing them. My phone was at home so no impulse to take a photo – just be there with them on that spectacular evening. Experiencing my thoughts and feelings, what the sandpipers mean to me, and laughing out loud at the way they all speed in unison. And I thought, this is life, this is living. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you be compassionate. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

The carotid arteries are vital blood vessels that supply oxygenated blood to the brain, face, and neck. At about the level of the mid neck, the common carotid artery splits into the internal and external carotid arteries. There is a small bulge at the level of this bifurcation. It is known as the carotid sinus or bulb. The carotid sinus contains vital pressure sensors, called baroreceptors, that help regulate blood pressure. The internal carotid arteries supply blood to the brain and the external carotid arteries supply the face and neck. The carotid arteries may become diseased with atherosclerosis, which causes blood flow-inhibiting plaques which narrow, or stenose, the artery. This often occurs at the level of the carotid sinus. Risk factors for carotid stenosis are age, smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.

Most people with carotid artery stenosis never have symptoms. If a plaque ruptures, pieces of it may travel downstream, usually in the internal artery to the brain causing a stroke. Those at high risk for stroke may have smaller, self-resolving strokes called transient ischemic attacks, or TIAs. If the pieces flow down the external carotid artery, which is rare, they may wind up in the artery to the eye, causing temporary blindness in that eye. That condition is called amaurosis fugax. Carotid artery stenosis may be detected using a simple tool – a stethoscope. Because the diameter of the inside of the artery (called the lumen) may be narrowed by plaque, the blood travelling through it must flow faster, often causing a jet-like blood flow. As an analogy, a gallon of water flowing through small pipes must travel faster than through large pipes to ensure the same rate of water delivery. The jet-
like blood flow in an artery causes a sound called a bruit, which may be heard with a stethoscope. Likewise, the faster rate of blood flow through an artery can be detected by using a duplex ultrasound, or doppler. Carotid artery stenosis may also be detected using CT angiogram (using a CAT scanner) or MR angiogram (using MRI technology). Those diagnosed with carotid stenosis are usually placed on a statin, aspirin, and medication to control their blood pressure. Stains (i.e. Lipitor) not only lower total cholesterol and HDL, or “bad” cholesterol, they also have an anti-inflammatory side effect that stabilizes plaques, making them less likely to rupture. In addition, lifestyle changes are recommended, for example quitting smoking, losing weight, and controlling diabetes. Current guidelines recommend a vascular surgery evaluation for those who have more than 50% steno-
sis and symptoms (i.e. TIAs), or more than 70% stenosis and no symptoms. The preferred method of reopening a stenosed artery is to insert a stent, where a catheter is inserted into the femoral artery at the groin and threaded up to the carotid artery. When stenting is not feasible or contraindicated, a carotid endarterectomy is performed. An incision is made in the neck, the carotid artery is located and dissected free, and then clamped above and below the blocked area. Sometimes a temporary bypass is used to provide blood to the brain. Risks of endarterectomy include stroke, heart attack, and injury to the nerves that control tongue functioning and swallowing. A while ago I injured my hip and for years had difficulty walking even short distances. My orthopedist advised that the best course of action to avoid surgery was to strengthen the area by weight training. I found an excellent trainer, and through twice-weekly training in the gym and regular cardiovascular exercise, today my hip is stronger and generally painfree. However, it only stays that way if I continue to work out. When I take a couple of weeks off, or do solely cardio instead of weight training, the nagging pain returns. With virus cases mounting back in March authorities closed gyms, including mine. I wasn’t sure I would be able to continue to work out. I called my old trainer to see if he had any ideas. He had one: socially distanced training outdoors via a TRX, a suspension contrap-
tion that enables body weight exercises. I was reluctant at first to expose my workouts publicly. I am a private person and, to look at me in the gym, not exactly an athlete. But given the choice between the constant pain I knew would return or public embarrassment, I popped on dark glasses to give myself an impression of privacy and chose fitness. We met across the city to work out: the boardwalks of Rockaway, a playground (before they were shut down), the promenade by the East River, my friend’s backyard. All we needed was our masks and something like a pole or tree to anchor the TRX and we were in business. I got plenty of inquisitive looks but the only comments I got were encouraging ones. As I tentatively got through a set of split squats off a wobbly plastic step stool, passersby shouted encouragement.
Other things happened as well. A child with a Superman mask poked my rear with a twig as I did clamshells. I saw an endless parade of puppies growing bigger as the days passed. Dogs of all shapes and sizes wanted to join my workout. So did seagulls and pigeons and a tiny mouse. After a while, our “gym� grew in “membership.� One day our East River location had three TRXs, battle rope snakes, and enough resistance bands to encircle a city block. The new members were always socially distanced, always masked if necessary, and way more polite than members I’ve encountered in indoor gyms. It has been six months. Things are looking up for NYC. Gyms are set to open in the next couple of weeks. But I feel no need to rush back inside given temperate weather and the sweet outdoor air. It has been a privilege to work out outside, a privilege to
experience the city in this way, to be among New Yorkers who did not turn tail and desert during the tough times, New Yorkers doing what they need to do to get through this mess, being supportive and respectful to their neighbors doing the same thing, being grateful to be healthy and alive. New Yorkers mourning the old days but knowing without a doubt that NYC will come back, stronger and better than ever, because of them, because, with grace and sheer force of will, they will make it so. Frumpster Follies Dear Enchantress, I feel frumpy. That is the best word for it while we have been in this lockdown. I have been eating nonstop. I don’t really get dressed and I have no energy to be social wearing a mask. So, I stay home and watch movies and do random things on Zoom with people. I’m 32 years old I don’t have a boyfriend but strangely enough, I have been meeting and talking to some man on dating apps and that has been fun. We even have had some Zoom dates. But I don’t get dressed up for those. I don’t put on makeup. I kind of just feel like blah. I’m lucky because I have always
worked from home. So when I do work from home and if I have a meeting, I just pull my hair back and show up. I want some excitement. I want to feel good about myself. I am worried that I have totally messed myself up and that I won’t be able to feel good about myself again. Dear Frumpster, I am so glad you are writing me. I know that there are a huge number of women that are feeling like you are, so thank you for being a leader in sharing your situation, and to ask what to do. And looking good and feeling good is a priority because it contributes to mental health and can keep “disease” away. So! What would be most fun and doable for you? A dance in the morning? Putting on lipstick daily? Taking a bath? Reading poetry? Wearing a gown? You may not know, so you can try one of these above, or anything. The key to this is (and remember this forever) the motivation and the satisfaction may come after the action, not before. So, do not wait to feel inspired. And remember, as soon as you do

Do this one thing for seven days in a row, then decide if this is your new thing, or then choose a new one and do that one for seven days. Serves: 4 Ingredients: • 1-1/2 pounds of chicken cutlets, sliced thin • **ž cup of Sweet Vidalia Dressing • 1-1/2 cups cornflake crumbs • Oil for sautÊing • 2 large onions, diced • 1 pound sliced pastrami, diced • ½ cup of duck sauce Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Pour Sweet Vidalia dressing over the chicken and dip into cornflake crumbs. Spray an ovenproof pan and place the cutlets in the dish.
Cover and bake for 15 minutes. Heat frying pan and heat oil. Add onions until golden. Add pastrami and sautĂŠ 5-8 minutes. Add the duck sauce and cook until it boils. Pour the pastrami mixture over the cutlets and bake, uncovered for another 10 minutes. **You can substitute Italian Dressing

So, this is what house arrest is like. The major difference here is that a criminal sentenced to serve time and given the courtesy of house arrest knows that there is a definitive time when he/she will befree and can resume a normal life. Thank you Covid-19 for shattering that concept for most of us. That being said, and without that definitive date, we can all look forward to the day Dr. Fauci says a vaccine has been developed and proven valuable and we can all go back to some semblance of a normal life. While we wait, things are slowly beginning to reopen.
Some airlines are flying at full capacity while others are observing “social distance” by dedicating adjoining seats as vacant. Most airlines will require you to wear a mask both while boarding and during the flight. If you are coming in to New York, New Jersey or Connecticut, you’ll be questioned if your return is from a list of states compiled by the triumvirate. You will be told to self-quarantine for 14 days. Not a bad idea to keep both you and your loved ones safe. There are some “Knuckleheads,” as New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy called them, who refuse to use common sense and wear a mask or keep distance. Stay away from them.

One terrific option for travel is to some of the national parks. Plan ahead as some require advance reservations for lodging, even for RVs, camping or other accommodation. Kids who are up to fourth grade will be admitted free of charge along with their families. In some instances, you’ll need to get a pass online. For grandparents taking kids, a lifetime Senior Pass will cost $80 or $20 for an annual pass. In many of the parks, visitor centers are closed and some limit attendance. Generally, there are no longer ranger programs. Be wise and download the apps for the park(s) you’ll be visiting. We normally list them here but there are so many this time you’ll have to do the leg work yourself. Make sure you bring a cooler, some water bottles or canteens and snacks for everyone. The most unique souvenir this year is a face mask from the park you’ll be at. We’ve watched reruns of all our favorite shows for months now, but a light is on the horizon. As James Bond devotees, we’re looking forward to November when the new Bond flick is slated to arrive. “No Time To Die” will have 007 back on the big screen. Most movies make extra income by what is called in the industry “Product Placement.” You’ll see familiar brands on billboards, wall signs and every conceivable place. The producers enhance their income by charging for these placements. The new Bonder has partnered with Blackwell Rum, owned by Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Famer Chris Blackwell. The limited edition of the rum has a unique add-on. There is a QR code on the bottle where Blackwell comes to life to share his stories of his career and the celebrities he has known. The movie is set in Jamaica which gives it a nexus with the rum. We are looking forward to seeing Bond and relaxing with a cool rum and
Coke. (Disclaimer: No consideration was offered or received for this). One method we’ve used to pass the time and bring back memories of chowing down on great BBQ in Texas is to make our own. We use an electric smoker and ever since the family has lined up at our door for BBQ. With some experimenting over the years, we’ve gotten it down to a science. About 220 degrees for 13-15 hours with some wood chips thrown in. At a writer’s conference in Syracuse, we found a terrific addition, the perfect BBQ sauce. While relaxing at a tavern, we spotted a chef smoking brisket. The chef, Tom Armstrong, developed his own sauce and the scent was amazing. We purchased three bottles, used them up and bought several more by mail order. Used those up and went whole hog purchasing a dozen bottles. Working on two books takes a lot of time, but at every break we make it over to the smoker to keep an eye on the BBQ. Three to four hours before the meat is done, we cover it with Armstrong’s sauce. Wrestle Talk THE WWE ATTITUDE ERA RETURNS? By Eric Jayden
Results from the WWE PPV SummerSlam on August 23 from the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida: • Apollo Crews defeated MVP • Bayley defeated Asuka • Street Profits defeated Andrade/Angel Gaza • Mandy Rose defeated Sonya DeVille • Seth Rollins defeated Dominik Mysterio • Asuka defeated Sasha Banks for the WWE Raw Women’s Championship • Drew McIntyre defeated Randy Orton • The Fiend Bray Wyatt defeated Braun Strowman for the WWE Universal Championship The match of the night for me was Drew McIntyre vs Randy Orton. They both put on an
excellent match and they both showed they had the true star power of the entire card. The rest of the card was mediocre-at-best with lackluster performances and over-the-top storylines. So, the rumor has been that the WWE has been looking to bring back the Attitude Era. For those of you that are there are unaware, the Attitude Era was a time in the ‘90s when the WWE was very edgy with its content and had a Rated R type of concept. According to the Wrestling Observer “the WWE is expected to rely heavy on the creation of new factions to revamp its main roster programming.” This will see the possible return of multiple groups showing up in the WWE using the 1990s attitude concept. It seems that the mentality at the WWE right now is to do what worked in the ‘90s and start storylines that are
more edgy. Will this concept work? Well, if booked correctly, these new factions can lead to the birth of New Superstars or help current Superstars blow up. As the WWE struggles with historically low viewership with its flagship show Monday Night Raw and secondary show SmackDown, maybe creating a new Attitude Era is needed to help remedy it’s viewership issues. In my opinion, the WWE should concentrate on staying with consistent storylines that will keep the attention of the fans and stay away from comedy driven angles. Keeping the storylines steady and edgy in tune with the ‘90s Attitude Era concept I believe should help the WWE gain more viewership. The question of the week comes from Harold F. in Belle Harbor and he asked, “What does the wrestling term Gimmick mean?” The term gimmick
has various meanings. It can used to refer to a wrestler’s character or a wrestling stage prop to a wrestling storyline. Sometimes it could be used to refer to an everyday thing or item.
