Despite Another Blow, CROM’s Heart Will Prevail By Katie McFadden
A home is not defined by four walls, but what’s inside— heart. For CROM, “All it takes is heart” has been a longtime motto. As they deal with yet another blow, it is that heart that will carry them through the latest obstacle of having to permanently close the doors of the gym they’ve called home for the past five years. The death toll of coronavirus has been overwhelming, but those at CROM are dealing with another type of loss— the loss of their business. In March, Sarah and Chris Romulo, the couple behind a beloved fitness and martial arts center on Beach 92nd Street, CROM Physical Culture, were met with an opponent with a mighty punch—coronavirus. As the realities of the deadly virus began to hit New York City, the couple battled with the conundrum of how to keep their staff and members, who often come in close contact
during workouts, safe. They worked hard to sanitize the gym but ultimately decided the best course of action was to close temporarily. Within a few hours later, Governor Andrew Cuomo reiterated that they had made the right choice, when he announced that all gyms would have to close on March 16. Within a few days, the Romulos started virtual classes to continue giving their members an outlet to stay fit, and to keep their coaches working. However, within a month of closing, the prospect of opening the doors again, began to slip away as the Romulos tried to picture
a new future for gyms in a world with coronavirus. “The first thing we thought about was, how do we keep our members and coaches safe? And even if we have a young coach who is healthy and thriving, what about her dad who just got over cancer? This is going to affect households and there are so many things that are hard to know,” Sarah Romulo said. “There was the question of when we reopen, how are you going to do this? Are we ever going to be able to have martial arts again, with people coming into contact with one another, or kids and adults rolling around mats? How do we control that distance in Muay Thai, in kicking and punching, in Shred, where people are breathing heavy, and that’s just in training, not even in actual fighting? I know a lot of gyms are going to reopen with a policy of wearing
masks and maintaining social distancing. I fully support any gym that will reopen but it was going to be very challenging for us.” Those questions about the future came into play when the Romulos were given an ultimatum from their landlord—either pay April, May and June’s rent on time, or get out. With a monthly rent of $10,000, the doors closed and no answer in sight of when they could reopen, or if it would even be safe or feasible to do so when allowed, they were put in a tough position. They had applied for financial assistance like the Paycheck Protection Program, among other loans and grants, but hadn’t received any funding, and while there are eviction protections in place, the current rent rules would only delay the inevitable. FANTASTIC PHOTOS: TOP 30 SELECTED! The Rockaway Times Photo Contest/ Photo Expo closed to entries on Thursday, April 30 and eight judges went to work sorting through hundreds of outstanding photos, making the selection process this year the toughest one yet. Judges included reps from The Rockaway Times, co-sponsors the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy, NYC Ferry, and NYC Parks. To ensure fairness, the judges were given access to the photos with numbers as identifiers. No names. The categories this year included Rockaway Life (a wide-ranging category allowing photographers to submit photos that capture peninsula life); Boardwalk Life; Pets/Animals; In the Water; and Humor/Fun. Six photos were picked for each category. In addition to the Top 30, five Honorable Men-
tion photos were selected as well. The TOP 30 will be blown up to poster-size and be affixed to the boardwalk railing in the area of Beach 95th Street and will be eligible to win the $500 Grand Prize when the top photo is selected later in the summer. Although not eligible to claim top prize, the Honorable Mention selections will also have their photos enlarged and placed at the ferry dock or elsewhere on the boardwalk. The photos will appear in future editions of The Rockaway Times. This year’s TOP 30 include an entry by 2018 winner Don Riepe. Several photographers who’ve made it to the finals in past years are again in the competition for the 2020 top prize. Argirios Kostaras (Mister Softee) has landed three photos in this year’s com-
petition. One caveat: We may be forced to withdraw a couple of photos because the resolution is not a high enough grade. When photos with low-res are enlarged, they often become pixelated and lose their beauty. One of the rules of the competition was to submit high-res photos only. If any photos can’t make the cut, they will be replaced by photos in the Honorable Mention category. Work is being done on the photos at Duggal Studio in Manhattan. The Fluff Attacks

I don’t need much. There are few more satisfying things in my life than knowing no one else in the household likes some foods that I like. No one touches my Special K Protein cereal so I can count on it being there when I’m in the mood. Chocolate chip ice cream is another story. It’s like cat burglar food. You’d swear somebody broke into the house in the middle of the night to wolf down the half gallon that was there when you went to bed. I hide stuff. If it doesn’t have to be refrigerated, I’ll put things like cookies and chips in my sock drawer. Under the socks. Refrigerator placement strategy is a lost cause but sometimes works in the short term. You might have one beer left and you’ll stick it in the vegeta-

ble drawer hoping nobody will be looking for lettuce, or whatever weird thing somebody put in there a few weeks back. I’ve tried to hide milk if the level is dangerously low and my morning coffee will be in jeopardy. I’ve poured milk into a stainless-steel thermos and stuck it on the fridge door shelf next to barbecue sauce and vanilla extract. It works. I think a genius move would be pouring the milk into a cup and wrapping the cup in tin foil. Things in tin foil hide in plain sight. It could be weeks before someone cracks open something in tin foil. You want to hide a Snickers bar or a hundred-dollar bill for that matter, wrap it in tin foil and put it towards the back of the shelf. No one in my house is going to reach all the way back there for something that seems like it’s been there for a year. Sometimes others will eat your favorite food even though they don’t really like it or want it. Worse, sometimes they’ll just
take a few bites and throw out the rest. I’m shaking my head as I write this. What’s the matter with these people? Your stuff is simply more at risk than you think. If they went into your sock drawer, for socks, you better move that nutri-grain bar you had stashed there. They’ll be back for it. And just because no one else likes your stuff doesn’t necessarily mean it’s safe. My cereal had been left untouched for weeks and all that did, was make me complacent. I had no idea, the son who will remain nameless, put a tub of marshmallow Fluff on the same pantry shelf. The top of said tub was not put on tightly. The Fluff leaked. Exactly like The Blob in the 1958 horror movie. I did not discover this until the fluffy
blob had flowed around various boxes and then solidified. I respectfully submit one of the crime scene photos here. A couple of disclaimers. The fluff didn’t target my stuff only. Surprisingly. That French vanilla stuff isn’t mine. And neither are the Sponge Bob fruits snacks. (I swear). I gotta say the cleanup wasn’t easy but it was the nicest smelling cleanup job I can remember. I almost put peanut butter on it.

This does not currently impact the longtime rebate for Rockaway residents. ***** Governor Cuomo promoted the idea of doctors and nurses coming to New York to help in the crisis, but these out-of-state heroes recently learned they will be paying New York State income tax. Well, if there’s a spike and such healthcare workers are needed again, we bet some will say, sure, but pay us more money to come if you’re going to tax us. ***** The New York Times reported that Cuomo “did not alert City Hall about reopening metrics before he detailed them publicly, though the benchmarks could determine the city’s near future.” Cuomo has gotten great praise for leadership. He can’t tell the mayor of New York City what his plan is? That’s leadership? Sometime Cuomo is so bad he makes

The Romulos were left with no real choice but to leave the 5,000 sq. foot space they had called home since January 2015. When the couple first moved to Rockaway in 2009, the big space at 217 Beach 92nd Street caught their eye. “The building had a sign that said it was going to be demolished and I told my wife, it’s a shame they’re going to tear that down, because it would be a beautiful gym,” Chris Romulo said. In a turn of events, Hurricane Sandy relief allowed the landlord at the time to renovate the building, rather than demolish it. But it was a time when the Romulos were faced with severe challenges of their own. Coronavirus is not their first big fight. In 2012, as Sandy rolled through, the Romulos’ own home and the gym they had established in the small space where Uma’s now stands,
THURSDAY, MAY 14, 2020 was flooded with six feet of water. Having lost everything, they had to start from the beginning. With heart and determination, they were eventually able to open in other locations, but they still had their eyes set on 217 Beach 92nd Street. “That was our dream spot,” Sarah Romulo said. In 2015, that dream came true, and the Romulos have been operating a successful gym there, offering everything from Chris’ specialty of Muay Thai, to boxing, to CrossFit, to Shred fitness classes, for kids to adults of all ages. It became a true staple of the neighborhood as locals and visitors set their heart on CROM and the Romulos shared the love by actively donating to charitable events, and donating time toward causes of their own, such as providing youth scholarships and offering free workouts to wounded warriors. Since announcing the news of their permanent closure on April 29, the Romulos have been overwhelmed with messages of support, sadness, ap-

preciation for the many ways in which this family-owned gym in Rockaway, made a huge difference. “We read all of these comments of how the gym changed people’s lives and how much it meant to them and the relationships they’ve made and the goals they’ve reached. It’s been heartwarming, but also really sad,” Sarah Romulo said. The loss of the business they have built up over the past decade, has been devastating. “I’ve rediscovered my six pack with crying so much,” Sarah Romulo said. “This had been really hard on me personally. I’m trying to be as stoic as possible, because it’s what I’m used to as a fighter, but this has been really challenging,” Chris Romulo said. However, with that fighting spirit, the Romulos are trying to refocus their “champions mindset.” “What we learned through Sandy was that it’s gonna take the proper thinking to figure out a way through this. You have to think about what you really want. You can’t just focus on all the
negative going on daily. If we can focus on what our mission was, of promoting physical culture, we’re going to keep fighting,” Chris Romulo said. Although it may not have a home, the Romulos say CROM isn’t stopping. After spending the past week clearing out their gym space, selling equipment and saying goodbye to the place they called home, the Romulos are already focusing on what’s ahead. While the idea of opening another physical location isn’t out of the picture, the Romulos are currently working on a fullfledged virtual platform that will allow people all over the country to access their fitness and martial arts classes online, plus information on nutrition, how to achieve that “champions mindset” and beyond. “It should be ready in the next four to six weeks,” Sarah Romulo said. “I think it’s going to be great.” For more updates, follow CROM Physical Culture on Facebook, Instagram or www. crompc.com.

Many businesses that initially closed, are now open to the extent they can be. Chinese food is back! Most Chinese restaurants immediately closed in March, but they’re slowly starting to reopen for delivery or takeout. East Meets West (421 Beach 129th Street) opened on May 4, and their phones haven’t stopped ringing. They have a limited menu of some of the popular appetizers, soups and main dishes, and limited hours of 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. for now. To help free up the phone line, if picking up, it is advised that you order in person, and save the phone for delivery orders (718474-5999). This is all subject to change. The good news is there are now even more options. Rockaway Crown (115-9 Rockaway Beach Blvd) is also open for takeout/delivery for both their Chinese and TexMex menus. Zooming In, Zooming Out

This pandemic has brought us all together in ways we would never have imagined! In addition to appreciating all our healthcare workers and everyday people in our lives, we have become connected to each other “virtually,” in many cases through the application called Zoom. I was first introduced to Zoom through a west coast Silicon Valley client a few years back as a way to work virtually with a team that was spread out geographically. I remembered trying to use technologies like this at the NYSE years ago, but the technologies were not yet mature or economical enough to truly work. Not anymore. Zoom has become the way that
businesses and families have been communicating face to face through this crazy time. But it comes with the need to know how to use it. For instance, I have noticed that several people don’t recognize that if they have a bright light behind them, that they will appear as if they are in the witness protection program. Their entire figure will be darkened and unrecognizable. While some may prefer this approach, it really defeats the purpose. The only thing missing is the voice scrambler to change the persons speech to protect the innocent. Then there are those that no matter how hard they try; they continue to not recognize that they are on mute and cannot be heard by anyone else on the call. This usually results in other people trying to give that person hand signals to tell them to unmute themselves. Literally the only time in the world
when someone might say that to another human being. Because the technology quickly changes focus to the person talking, if one person continues to dominate the discussion, it becomes impossible to actually participate in the conversation. This usually results in some people just slumping in their chairs completely giving up until the other person tires themselves out. Occasionally, the opposite will happen, that is, with several people on the Zoom call, no one has anything to say. So, in those situations you find yourself staring at everyone just staring back at you, and try as you may, it becomes impossible to come up with anything meaningful to say. Zoom also has a feature that allows you to change the background to either some preset backgrounds or some other that you import. In this case you will see a person
floating in mid-air speaking to you from some celestial setting. Very unsettling to say the least. Until recently, Zoom had some security bugs which allowed others to crash your Zoom meeting and either draw on the screen or leave a message or comment that would be most certainly unwelcome. Zoom highly recommends using a password for that reason. I guess in the future, Zoom will add Avatars that allow computer generated images to speak on our behalf rather than have to look at yourself looking back at yourself. It is amazing that the networks supporting this technology and the compression algorithms that allow this to happen are now household everyday items. It appears that Zoom is here to stay and will probably only get better and easier to use, probably right through our TV sets. I wished I owned the stock! Happy Zooming!!

COVID-19 Contact Tracing is Coming According to the CDC, contact tracing is an infectious disease control measure that has been used by local and state health department personnel for decades and should be a key strategy for preventing further spread of COVID-19. In contact tracing, public health staff, or tracers, work with a person who has tested positive for an illness to help them recall their contacts: everyone with whom
they’ve been in close contact during the time they were contagious. The tracers then warn these contacts of their exposure. Contacts are generally not told of the identity of the infected person but are provided with education and information, such as what they should be doing, like monitoring for illness, social distancing, quarantining, and the possibility that even if they don’t show
symptoms of the virus, they can still be contagious. Contact tracing is intended in large part to identify and prevent the growth of potential “hot spots.” NYS has announced that it is launching a contact tracing program and has stated that “contact tracing teams will work remotely with state-of-the-art software to develop a secure database of information on the spread of the infection.” Building and training a staff of contact tracers is not a simple task. The Johns Hopkins Center of Health Security says the U.S. may need an army of 100,000 tracers; NYS may need as many as 17,000. Tracing can be done manually, but to aid scalability, technology companies and some governments have proposed using contact
tracing apps. These recently developed apps use mobile phone data (Bluetooth, location services technology, or a combination) to collect information about where you’ve been and with whom you’ve been in contact, thereby tracing paths of infection should you come down with the virus. Affected contacts would be notified, and affected businesses alerted so they can take precautions like deep cleaning. Tracing apps can increase the efficiency of tracers’ work. Apple and Google have collaborated to develop tracking technology which, these companies say, provides a high level of privacy protection. But apps can raise privacy issues. For example, will shady government actors misuse information they collect through tracing?
Page 23 Will app makers use information collected through their apps for commercial purposes beyond tracing? At present, tracing apps are opt-in, meaning that a user must download a tracing app on his/her phone to enable the technology (which raises the question of just how useful these apps are if people don’t opt-in). But before you download a tracing app, look into the technology. Understand how it tracks locations and contacts, what it does with the data, where it is retained, and whether it will be shared or sold with others for purposes beyond contact tracing. Get as much information as possible about how your privacy will be handled. As with any new technology product, don’t download an app until you’re fully informed.
REMEMBERING LEGENDARY FRHS COACH
JAKE MILLER On Sunday, May 10, Jake Miller, a beloved Far Rockaway High School coach, died. Many will remember Miller as a Far Rockaway legend. Under the late Coach Kerchman, Miller was part of the football team that led the FRHS Seahorses to their first city title in 1953, and he stuck by the team for many years. Miller continued to be an important part of the school as an inspirational assistant coach, to a head coach, to a mentor and teacher. Even after retiring, Coach Miller was known to return back to the Far Rockaway campus to catch football games and attend several Far Rockaway High School reunions, including in 2012
where he was honored for his role in the school’s history. Miller died in his home in Florida on Sunday after a long battle with cancer.

Cheers to Mrs. A on 107 Years By Katie McFadden
1913—It was the year Woodrow Wilson became president, the year Grand Central Terminal opened, and the year Frances Abbracciamento was born. Having just celebrated her 107th birthday, the Breezy Point centenarian can say she lived through the years of the Spanish Flu, World War I, World War II, The Great Depression, Hurricane Sandy and most recently, she became a coronavirus survivor, but it is her big heart, her hard work, her positive attitude and inner strength that far exceed her impressive age. On May 9, a parade of fire trucks from Breezy Point and Coney Island, and cars full of family, neighbors and friends, drove by the home of Abbracciamento as she celebrated her 107th birthday. Drive-by celebrations are becoming part of the new normal in the age of coronavirus but this was certainly the first to celebrate someone who is 107! And she just recovered from the coronavirus herself! It was a chance for everyone to celebrate that accomplishment and the many that the beloved Breezy Point centenarian has had throughout her long life. On May 9, 1913, Frances entered the world, born to immigrants from Sicily, who Abbracciamento, with a mind still sharp as a tack, called, “wonderful parents,” during an interview with The Rockaway Times. Her father, a bootmaker, and her mother, a crafts teacher, eventually opened a grocery store in Brooklyn. Opening New York businesses would become something Abbracciamento carried on into her adult life. In 1941, at age 26, Abbracciamento married the love of her life, Sal Abbracciamento. She can still recall the details of their honeymoon
in Florida and Cuba, where Sal could watch some of their favorite ballplayers from the Brooklyn Dodgers, train for the upcoming season. “The moment we met, we fell in love. He was the most wonderful man, a wonderful husband and a devoted father," Abbracciamento said of her late husband. “What did he call you?” Francesca Abbracciamento, Frances’ eldest granddaughter prompted. “A pain in the neck most of the time,” Frances quipped. The couple had four children. That four has branched into a family tree of nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, “and two more on the way,” Abbracciamento said. While attending Brooklyn College, Abbracciamento worked as a milliner, a hat sales clerk at Namm’s Department Store. In the ‘80s she worked as a postmistress at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. However, most of her career, she spent her time helping her family run some of the most wellknown restaurants in New York City. In the late 1930s, Sal had opened his first restaurant, Sal Abbraccia-

mento on Liberty Avenue in Brooklyn. It was the first of many family-owned restaurants for the Abbracciamentos, including the famous Abbracciamento on the Pier on Canarsie Pier in Brooklyn. The legacy still continues with Frank Abbracciamento’s recently opened restaurant in Lynbrook, which Frances says she still helps her son with as an adviser. “I’m not retired,” she said. The Abbracciamento name became a big staple in Brooklyn, not only for the restaurants, but for the family’s service to the community. The couple led several philanthropic efforts, which are still recognized today, with P.S. 108 in Brooklyn named the Sal Abbracciamento school. Frances went on to serve Brooklyn even further as a state committeewoman, a democratic district leader and the School Board President in Brooklyn’s District 19. However, the Abbracciamento name also became a staple in Breezy Point. After being invited down to the beach town by their friends, the Ferraras, in 1966, the Abbracciamentos realized what a special place Breezy was. “They

invited us down for the day and we loved the place. A week later we bought a place of our own on Pelham Walk,” Abbracciamento said. Unfortunately, Sal Abbracciamento only got to enjoy their new summer home for two months. He died in 1966. Abbracciamento’s love for her husband never died, and neither did her love for Breezy Point. It was the place where she and her family opened the Bay Terrace restaurant, which stood where Kennedy’s now stands, and eventually Abbracciamento had a year-round home built in the community, where she still lives today. “I love Breezy Point,” she said of the place where she’s affectionately known as, “Mrs. A” to neighbors and friends. Mrs. A mostly lives alone, with the exception of an aide, Dorothy. “She’s been such a wonderful source for me. She’s like one of my daughters,” Abbracciamento said, adding that while Dorothy helps her, she still gives her the sense of independence. After all, Frances still calls the shots, even while being more physically limited. She still remains active in the kitchen by telling Dorothy or her family how to cook a family recipe, recalling every detail down to the last seasoning. As a lover of gardening, she makes sure Dorothy waters her plants, something Frances was doing by herself up until she took a fall at age 102, breaking her hip and shoulder. Despite those small mishaps, Frances Abbracciamento remains a woman of good health. At 107, she doesn’t even wear glasses—something that comes in handy as she actively reads books and newspapers on her Kindle and constantly stays in touch with her many friends and family mem-
bers through texting and FaceTime on her iPhone. Between recalling details of her long life, Abbracciamento took breaks to check her texts, sharing one from a family member of a photo of one of her many great-grandchildren, Enzo. When Abbracciamento became ill in March, it was a scare for the whole family. It wasn’t until April that they learned she had the virus now impacting people across the globe. Through a few rough weeks, the family feared the worst for their matriarch, who rode out the virus at home. But Frances bounced back. “I don’t have the virus,” she proudly said the day before her 107th birthday. Even Abbracciamento herself is surprised by her age. “It’s mind boggling,” she said. For the blessing, she credits the love of her family, and God. “It’s because of the love of my kids, my family and the children who love me and I love back. I’m so blessed for everything God had given to me and I’m so thankful. I’ve had a wonderful life and I have no regrets of anything.” She also holds some philosophies to carry her through. “You have to be HIP—have Honesty, Integrity and Principle” and “Always look ahead, never behind.” Before her birthday, Abbracciamento offered some more of her secrets to longevity and some of her birthday wishes—”To love, to forgive, to forget, to bless, and to wish people well and not bad,” she said. “I wish everybody had everything in the world that they wanted and to not suffer in any way, for children to grow up strong and educated and fulfilling their dreams, and for all of my grandchildren to be who they want to be. I just want to see happiness and joy.”

Rich Man’s Disease Gout is a common and complex form of arthritis. It has been around since the days of ancient Egypt and has been called the “disease of kings� or “rich man’s disease.� It affects 1-2% of the population, mostly men aged 30 to 50, but can be seen in post-menopausal women. An attack causes sudden, severe joint pain, swelling, redness, and tenderness in the affected joint. Classically, it attacks the base joint of a big toe, but it can be seen in any joint in the body. Symptoms come and go. When an attack occurs, it is typically most severe the first 12 hours, after which it lessens somewhat
but can last for days to weeks. Moving the joint increases the pain. It is caused by high uric acid levels in the blood. The uric acid crystallizes out of the blood in a joint as urate crystals. Under a microscope, urate crystals look like sharp, pointy spikes, or tiny toothpicks. Purines, organic compounds found in many foods, are broken down in the body into uric acid. Uric acid is then removed from the body via the kidneys. Purines form part of the building blocks of DNA and RNA. Purines are found in many foods, but high levels are found in red meats, organ meats (i.e. liver

and kidneys), fish and shellfish, beer, red wine, dark cheese, and drinks sweetened with fructose, especially high-fructose corn syrup. They are also found in many vegetables, grains, and beans but intake of purine-rich vegetables and grains is not associated with a higher risk of a gout attack. Eating low-fat dairy products lowers the risk of an attack. Untreated gout eventually causes joint destruction and causes tophi, hard lumps of urate crystals that can be found on the hands, fingers, feet, elbows, and Achilles tendons. Risk factors for gout include a family history, diet (especially those high in meats, seafood, and beer), obesity, hypertension, diabetes, heart and kidney disease, and the use of thiazide diuretics (hydrochlorothiazide and hygroton), low-dose aspirin, and anti-rejection medications (used after an organ transplant). Ways to prevent an attack include avoidance of high-purine foods, staying well hydrated, and consuming low-fat dairy products. Diagnosing gout can be done
by draining fluid from a joint to look for crystals, a blood test for the uric acid level (however a normal uric acid level does not preclude gout), and joint X Rays. Once diagnosed, gout attacks can be treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like indomethacin and Celebrex, colchicine (Colcrys and Mitigare), or steroids if the above drugs cannot be used. Medications to prevent an attack include xanthine oxidases (Allopurinol and febuxostat [Uloric]), which block uric acid production, and uricosuric agents (probenecid and lesinurad) which increase kidney excretion of uric acid. Anyone who has had a gout attack can attest to how painful they are. Sometimes even the weight of a bedsheet on an affected joint can cause excruciating pain. One would think that having once experienced an attack, most people with gout would strictly adhere to proper diet to prevent another one, but then we are, after all, only human. LAZER FOCUS Dear Editor: Each week I seek out the “Lazer Speaks” column, disappointed when its author may be on vacation, but I’m always overjoyed when I see the new title for his most recent work. I have often resolved to reach out to Mr. Pastina and renew an old - correction - very old friendship and tell him how much he means to me and how inspired I become when I read his columns in the Rockaway Times. You see, I had a dream of one day living on the peninsula, growing old with my wife and relishing my feet in the sand, summer or winter. It is fitting that the last time I saw Mr. Pastina was in Rockaway, far from where we first met on North 6th Street in Brooklyn. Things change, and now some forty-one years later, I am still working but on another peninsula in south Florida. Funny how life takes you on a path sometimes unexpected, but never forgetting where your journey began. And you never forget those along that journey who are genuine and sincere like the “Lazer." As I
finished reading the column titled “I Want My Life Back,” it struck a chord of familiarity that I could never so eloquently describe as Mr. Pastina did. Taking or more appropriately “not” taking things for granted. I have learned, often by trial and error or through the school of hard knocks, to never take something for granted that means so much. Even the little things. I have had success and failure in that regard. And this Coronavirus pandemic with its fallout and destruction makes it more apparent to cherish the things we have and had, and to nurture them, support them, and let people know when they matter. So, I realized upon reading the column that it's time to write this letter in support and encouragement to Mr. Pastina, “Lou” or “Louie” as I last called his name, so that I don’t take him or anyone else for granted, especially those in the Rockaways. Thank you, Lou, for your inspiration and your loyalty to the City. You matter, to me, and to so many more out there. Thank you for your perspective, your daring, your kindness, and your insight - and keep writing. The people we were exposed to and had a great impact on us on North 6th Street certainly deserve my thanks, and you are among them. TOM McMANUS Nursing Home Numbers Dear Editor: It is good to see that Governor Cuomo has backed off somewhat from his terrible policy in regard to the placement of patients with coronavirus in nursing homes. These deaths account for more than

As devastating as these numbers are, I believe they greatly understate the true depth of the problem. These numbers only count those who actually died in the nursing home, not any that may have been infected there, but made it to a hospital to die. They also do not include numbers from extended care facilities, sub-acute and acute care facilities, and most seriously, assisted living communities, such as Belle Harbor Manor and Surfside Manor, that most of us would generally consider to be 'nursing homes.' Residents of Beach 125th St have witnessed double digits in victims coming out of BH Manor who are not accounted for in these reports. I think that a closer investigation would reveal that these deaths actually account for over 50% and perhaps as much as 2/3 of NY state COVID fatalities. We need real numbers. KEITH GOLDBERG

What Works The first pages in the Course of Miracles quotes, “Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists.” Here in lies the Peace. In this realization is a deep peace of knowing— who you are in your essence— one with the universe. There is something beyond this – I am part of that. For me personally, it has been transformational and challenging to be in quarantine and remain positive and upbeat along with the feelings of despair. My days are full of discovery and learning. There are times of extreme quiet as I walk outside and other times when
there is a lot of activity. Personally, I like the quiet. Silence speaks loudly and clearly. This column is meant to encourage you to be healthy and happy. Some days, it can be difficult to write about good health with everything going on in these desperate times. Today, I will do my best to offer you what works well in my life. For one thing, I am perfectly imperfect. There are light and dark moments. For the most part, I choose to feel the light. When I feel heavy in thoughts, I take a few moments to rest, then I am ready to do what I need to do.
Movement of the body is one of the most beneficial practices for the mind. I imagine there are many people struggling with the mental aspect of isolation. I encourage you to move your body and connect to your breath by deepening and feeling it move through your entire being. Part of a self-care practice is to find what nourishes your body and mind. Breathe in, I am healthy, breathe out, I am strong. Believe, trust, and be with the force from within. Eating healthy is what makes our bodies and minds feel good. I choose to eat a lot of organic vegetables when I can buy them. Being in quarantine, I was gifted a beautiful recipe by my good friend, Marie, called Immunity Soup. Once a week, I make it for my family, and it’s gone in two days. For the record, my family never liked my homemade soups in the past. WISH Sparkles Here and There
By Beth Hanning I am not sure if I have ever mentioned in my column, I am a proud board member of WISH of Rockaway. The day my friends asked me to serve on the board, I was so proud. We work so hard to make a small difference in our community. In the beginning of this awful pandemic, my friend Loretta Courtney was on our Telegram group chat with all different ideas about how we can spread some sunshine. Just as I was writing this column, I was reminded how our members have done such kind things the last few months, two being: delivering letters for front line workers and nursing home residents from local children. Loretta’s first idea was to have kids design rainbows in their windows. Well, walk around the neighborhood and look how many rainbows there are. It is

so nice to see, and it does uplift the spirits. Another thing that I love seeing on my walks around the neighborhood are the blue ribbons around the trees on Newport Avenue. WISH member Christine James brought the Blue Ribbon Challenge to our last general meeting and we organized it. The blue ribbon challenge was to place blue ribbons around trees to support local law enforcement. On March 5, WISH collaborated with St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy and Ms. Re’s sixth grade students and we had a great time. The NYPD Emergency Service Unit came and allowed the children to tour their equipment. It was a great day watching many people in the community come together. the support of our local law enforcement. Well, what a surprise this morning when my phone started “blowing up� with messages about a post on social media. Someone posted on “Friends of Rockaway Beach� (The page I am blocked from and I believe it was from this column), that they hope the person who placed the blue ribbons has a
plan to remove them because the trees’ growth is being strangled. Wow, I thought during the pandemic I had seen it all and saw the worst in people, but this was probably the worst post I saw. It truly displays how people are so negative and have too much time on their hands and how this quarantine can be harmful to people’s mental well being. I am truly worried about this woman. I walk around and see the rainbows and blue ribbons and smile, and she sees tree murderers? So, after last night’s Zoom meeting, we have set up small plans for our veterans, Father’s Day and graduations. Hugh Kelly 1925-2020 Hugh Michael Kelly of Rockaway Beach, NY passed away peacefully on May 4, 2020 at home in Largo, FL with his beloved wife of 57 years, Ann, by his side. Born in the Bronx on December 31, 1925 to Patrick and Nora Kelly, he served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. In 1945, his unit was assigned to Nagasaki, Japan after the second atomic bomb was detonated to end the war. After the war, he was a concessionaire at Rockaway Playland, then became a steamfitter in union Local 638. He worked on many New York City landmarks including the construction of the original World Trade Center and the restoration
of Wollman skating rink in Central Park. He was a member of St. Francis de Sales parish in Rockaway for more than 50 years. After retiring, he spent many happy years with his beloved grandchildren and on the golf course. He played regularly into his 90s. His quick wit, smile and generosity of spirit were always present. He is survived by his wife Ann, his five children Nora, Peggy, William, Robert and Janet and his five grandchildren John, Dylan, Michael, Avery and Gray. We are forever grateful to him for teaching us all to love and laugh every day. A funeral Mass will be held at St Francis de Sales when circumstances allow.

A Deeper Trip Down Memory Lane By Frank Blum
Thank you to The Rockaway Times for publishing the photo of the St. Francis de Sales Tyros Basketball team as a follow up to the friendship article about John Roberts and Dee McClean. My sister, Mary Ellen, sent the photo to me and it immediately began a rewind of decades-old memories of my many friendships on that team, and the very important part of my formation. I then read the articles online and more joy unfolded. When I left Rockaway for California to begin my Navy service after graduating from Holy Cross in 1969, I took the values of my upbringing in Rockaway with me, Family, Faith. Friends, Community. When my wife, Scotty (Ridgewood, Queens) and I married in Feb. 1970, she brought those same values as someone who spent countless
days in Rockaway, developing her own friendships, and being immersed in those values, that mirrored those of her family. My Rockaway roots have been and will always be foundational. The opportunity to relive those friendships of my youth, the importance of them
to who I am, and their alignment with the importance of my entire Blum family, my St. Francis De Sales nourished Faith, and strong belief and commitment to serve my Community, is a gift beyond description. When I was getting out of the Navy in 1972, I told my parents
that Scotty and I, and at the time our two daughters, would like to temporarily move back with them until I got a job. My Dad said it would be fine, but he suggested looking for work “out there” first, as we could always move back to Rockaway. I felt OK with that, in part because I knew my “Home” would always be Rockaway Beach. And after 51 years “out there,” it still is. And over those years our entire family, five daughters and husbands, and 10 grandchildren, have made frequent visits “home,” and have likewise found the alignment of values. I’ve included a picture from the summer of 1979 with John Roberts, Joe Gilbert, Margie and Dee McClean, and Eileen Gilbert at a gathering we tried to have whenever our family made a trip “Home” from CA. Although these occasions diminished over the years, the fondness of these memories has not.
