DA Primary Results Still Unclear By Katie McFadden
Who won the Democratic primary election for Queens District Attorney? It’s still up in the air. By late night on election day, Tuesday, June 26, Tiffany Cabán declared herself the winner with poll numbers giving her a slight lead, but Melinda Katz says it ain’t over yet and has not conceded. As we go to press, the New York City Board of Elections had Cabán, a 31-year-old public defender, in the lead with 33,814 votes, and Katz, the current Queens Borough President, trailing by 1,090 votes at 32,724. The results reflect 98.58% of the scanners reported. Cabán already declared victory at her election party, saying, “They said I didn’t look like a district attorney. They said I was too young. They said we could not build a movement from the grassroots. They said we could not win—but we did it, y’all.” However, at her own

party, Katz told her supporters that she’s not giving up, saying, “We are doing a recount and God willing, I’ll come out on top.” With about 3,400 paper ballots still to be counted, including affidavit, absentee and military ballots, Katz still stands a chance, but time will tell. According to the Board of Elections (BOE), the official count cannot be completed
until July 3. In other results, former Judge Gregory Lasak was a third popular choice with 12,377 (14.49 percent) votes. Mina Malik, Jose Nieves and Betty Lugo trailed behind with 3310 (3.87 percent), 1075 (1.26 percent) and 921 (1.08 percent) votes respectively. Surprisingly, despite dropping from the race last week and endorsing Katz, Rory Lancman, whose name remained on the ballot, received 1168 votes. In Rockaway, Katz came on top. In Assembly District (AD) 23, which includes Broad Channel, Hamilton Beach, Howard Beach, Lindenwood, Ozone Park and a large portion of the Rockaway peninsula, Katz had 2117 votes. However, a majority of the west end of the Rockaway peninsula, which falls under District 23, voted for Greg Lasak. In AD 31, which represents Far Rockaway, South Ozone Park,

Springfield Gardens, Rosedale, and Laurelton, Katz also drew a majority of the votes at 1,818, however Cabán had a strong pull with 844 votes, most of which came from parts of Far Rockaway. Overall, voter turnout was low in Queens. According to the BOE, there are more than 766,000 active registered Democrats in Queens. On Tuesday, only about 85,000 voted.

The community came out strong on a beautiful Sunday evening for the 7th Annual Dylan Smith Paddle Out. Dozens of surfers, friends and neighbors joined the Smith family on Beach 86th Street to remember the life of Dylan Smith, a surfer and lifeguard, who is known for rescuing several neighbors with his surfboard on the night of Hurricane Sandy. Smith tragically died just about two months later while surfing in Puerto Rico. He was 23. Each year, many gather to remember Dylan with a paddle out. Last week, some large solar panel devices landed near the concession stands, which may have peaked the curiosity of some. While they won’t charge your cell phones, they are another example of how NYC Parks is going green. The devices are solar panel-powered, electric-vehicle charging stations for Parks Department vehicles. “We’re all charged up about our solar panel-powered, electric-vehicle charging stations! They provide a clean source of power for the electric vehicles in
our citywide fleet. Parks currently has 320 charging ports throughout the five boroughs,” a Parks spokesperson said. “Four new ports were installed in Rockaway last week at Beach 97th Street, Beach 86th Street and Beach 32nd Street (2 stations). These units can generate approximately 200 E-miles (electric equivalent miles) per day.” According to Parks, the department currently utilizes 250 electric vehicles, and have plans to add more. The charging stations are only for City vehicle use, but Parks is looking into the feasibility of allowing public access as well.

Congrats, Grads and Farewell, St. Camillus By John J. Schilling
It was a bittersweet day on Friday, June 14 as St. Camillus Catholic Academy prepared for their final graduation festivities after 68 years. The accomplishments of the Class of 2019 were highlighted in services that were held throughout the day. The day began with a Mass celebrated by Fr. Richard Ahlemeyer, followed by a breakfast reception for the family and friends that attended. During the mass, Fr. Richard praised the graduates and challenged them to take the “light of the Spirit” that lives within them and go into the darkness of the world, and let their light shine and change the world. The graduates participated in a rose ceremony. This ceremony was the graduates’ way of saying thank you to their parents, the teachers, and their homeroom teacher, Ms. Janet Rodman, for helping them on their journey at St. Camillus. After the Mass, the graduates

were met in the hallway of the school in a victory celebration. Each graduate received high fives from the student body and the teachers. This was then followed by the graduation breakfast where the seventh-grade class served the graduates and their families. This celebration was put together by Mrs. Joan Palinkas and Mrs. Dotsy Kearns. Both ladies remarked that it was
their pleasure to help put this celebration together because they would do anything for the children. The evening program began with the graduates being serenaded by the alumni members of the St. Camillus Band, under the direction of Mrs. Lynn Harvey and Mrs. Dotsy Kearns. Approximately, 25 members of the band returned to help celebrate
the Class of 2019 as well as say goodbye to St. Camillus School. After playing for about 30 minutes, the band played, “Pomp and Circumstance,” as Mr. Ralph Corso, the school principal, led the graduates into the church. The graduation ceremony began as the graduates entered the church, and Mr. Corso acted as the emcee of these ceremonies. Frank Brancato introduced the salutatorian, Joseph Foye, who welcomed everyone to the ceremony. After the salutatorian address, the distribution of the diplomas and awards were conducted by Janet Rodman and members of the academy board, Joe Young and Margaret McCambridge. After presenting all of the awards, Ms. Rodman introduced the valedictorian, Daniel Schilling. In his speech, he reflected on the past, invoking memories that spanned from kindergarten to eighth grade. He also challenged his classmates to folContinued on page 11

Two Bridges Music Festival Set to Make a Hit in Rockaway Beach

In its eighth year running, the annual Two Bridges Music Festival is back, and the event’s organizers are beyond stoked that they are going to be rocking in the heart of Rockaway Beach on Saturday, July 6 at La Barracuda. This year’s lineup will feature a whopping mash-up of 10 bands playing everything rock—from classic, acoustic, surf, indie and more. Broad Channel brothers, Mason and Frank Porretto, own-
ers of Broad Channel-based building and home contractor company, Two Bridges Home Improvement, founded their company’s namesake music festival in 2011, purely for the love of music and community. “My brother and I love not just playing music, but offering other bands a shot to play for the local community. We’ve done it in Broad Channel for years at venues like the Broad Channel Athletic Club and Grassy Point Bar and Grill, and last year we finally got
to cross the bridge and make our first debut in Rockaway at A/B Studios. Now for 2019, we are beyond excited to host the festival right in the heart of Rockaway Beach at La Barracuda, an awesome outdoor space that offers great food and true Rockaway vibe,” Mason Porretto said. The Porrettos, who drummed up the idea for the Two Bridges Music Festival one year before Sandy, have played in many local bands including Sixth Borough, The Poor House and currently rock with Phil and The Family Band. CB14 Votes Against Peninsula Hospital Redevelopment Plan After a nearly four-hour Community Board 14 meeting, focusing specifically on the proposed redevelopment plan for the old Peninsula Hospital site, the Board voted against the zoning changes needed for the plan to move forward as is, while making several recommendations on how to improve it. In a packed hall at the Knights of Columbus on Tuesday, June 25, dozens of people threw their support or dissent behind the Arker Companies’ proposed development for the land where Peninsula Hospital once stood. Their plan, which they’ve now dubbed Edgemere Commons, calls for the development of 11 buildings that will include 2,200 affordable rentable apartments, 72,000 square feet of retail space, 973 parking spots for residents and the retail space, some open space, resiliency measures and
more. When the floor was open to public speaking, a majority of speakers passionately spoke about their reasons to support the project. Many of them included members of the Service Employees International Union, Local 32BJ. The union is the only one that Arker Companies has agreed to work with so far when it comes to the project. Other supporters included seniors who are now living in another Arker Companies project, Beach Channel Senior Apartments, a 154-unit building for low-income seniors, which opened in November. Another big group of supporters included members of the Rockaway Youth Task Force and other youth, including those who are in, or have recently graduated college. Many spoke of how they support the development of 2,200 affordable units so that they can afford to live on the Rockaway penin-
sula and have a good quality of life. Other supporters included residents of the east end of the peninsula who feel the project could improve the neighborhood with more retail and job possibilities. Some also expressed their views against the project as is, due to several issues. Glenn DiResto, who has been outspoken against many aspects of the project said, “I want to see this land developed just as bad as everybody else, but I don’t want

to take the first thing they’re shoving down our throat. We deserve better.” Many spoke about specific concerns like the density of the project, with insufficient healthcare facilities and schools around, and the impact the thousands of additional residents that the building would bring, would have on traffic and transportation, among other concerns. Following dozens of speakers, Manuel Silva, Chief of Staff to Councilman Donovan Richards, spoke on behalf of the councilman, who was not present at the meeting, to share Richards’ thoughts on the project. According to Silva, Richards knows the plan isn’t perfect. “The councilmember does not entirely support this project as it stands,” Silva said. “He supports what it’s going to bring and he supports the Arkers and what Continued on page 15

Now we have a new opportunity to change that. I look forward to working with Arker Companies and City Hall as we flesh out all the details on this long overdue plan because this is not a done deal. We have a lot of work to do to ensure that any development that takes place on that site is within the best interests of the community.” Richards’ statement showed support for affordability, with the focus on residents who make between $22K to $70K, and the importance on ensuring that at least 50% of the units goes toward current Rockaway residents. It also reflected the scale of the project. “We have heard concerns about the density and height of this project and those concerns are not falling on deaf ears. We will be taking a close look at striking the right balance that will not stymie growth as this project comes to the city council in the coming months,” Richards’ statement said. The discussion was open to questions and concerns from CB14 members after Arker Companies principal Daniel Moritz gave a formal presentation on the project. Among the concerns were flooding on the streets surrounding the project, the density, the lack of schools in the area and no proposal for one with the development, the desire for a hospital over an urgent care facility, the disappointment over Western Beef being locked in as a supermarket provider over other possibilities, and much more. After heavy discussion, the Board made a motion to disapprove of the zoning changes the developers need to move the project forward, along with several modification/condition requests. They included Density: The total amount of units should be reduced by a minimum of 30-
THURSDAY, JUNE 27, 2019 50 percent; Parking: Residential parking should be increased to a minimum of 75% of total units built; That the negative impact on local schools identified in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) shall be addressed by a new school being funded, built and zoned for new residents and existing local students in the immediate area for the purpose of creating a neighborhood school; That a prevailing wage agreement be signed, which will be applicable for all workers; That in consultation with the community board and community—a holistic transportation/traffic plan be created and funded to mitigate the numerous traffic issues identified in DEIS that will affect all of the peninsula, east to west ; That the developer and city has further discussions with the community board in terms of what the proper Area Media Income for the project should be; That the developer be required to report to the Community Board every five months as to the progress of the project and to discuss and resolve issues that may arise; Shadow Impact : That the height of the buildings not exceed 12 stories; That the developers build and maintain a park on the land; That a Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) be signed that will guarantee that Community Board 14 residents get construction and other available jobs at development site, including at the supermarket etc.; Residents of Community board 14 shall get a minimum of 50% preference of all available units in each phase of development; And that a website be created and updated regularly to let the community know what’s going on as the process goes forward. The motion then went to a vote. Twenty-eight members voted Yes to disapproving the rezoning, while five voted No to disapproving the zoning and one person abstained. Following the ULURP process, the proposal now goes to the Queens Borough President for her recommendation before it heads to the City Planning Commission, then City Council, and then the mayor.

Proposed Cell Tower Gets Bad Reception in Neponsit By Ryan Schwach
What’s the topic of conversation in Neponsit? Something to help make conversations easier—a cell phone tower. But at a recent Neponsit Property Owners Association meeting, the tower got bad reception from neighbors. Residents of Neponsit were on alert this week when they noticed construction crews staging an area at the old Neponsit Health Care Center on Beach 149th Street, in preparation of installing a cellphone tower, which parts of were left on a flatbed trailer. This became the top topic of discussion at Tuesday’s meeting held at West End Temple. Not too much has taken place at the old Neponsit Home since it was evacuated and shut down in 1998. In 2008 there were plans to put a cell tower on top of West End Temple, where Tuesday’s meeting was held, but this plan was eventually halted due to the community's concerns about health issues, especially because West End Temple houses a religious school, day camps, and nursery school. Those same health concerns and others were repeated this week with the new tower. At a sparsely attended meeting, which was competing with an important community board meeting and the District Attorney election, the Neponsit property owners discussed the tower and posed questions to Councilman Eric Ulrich representative Robby Schwach. The majority of the attendees were opposed to the tower, cit-

er stuff—we don’t want it up here,� Anya said. “I think this is something to fight for.� He was joined by association President Amanda Agoglia, who also opposed the tower’s construction. “I think we have enough cell towers in the area,� she said, also mentioning the health concerns and aesthetic issue. According to the American
Cancer Society (ACS), “there is very little evidence to support� that cell towers have any link to cancer. According to their website, cell towers’ radio waves do not give off enough radiation to actually harm DNA cells and cause cancer. Of the studies that have been done, none find a plausible link between cell towers and cancer. Also, the ACS says that although there is no factual link between cell phones and tumours, “The amount of exposure from living near a cell phone tower is typically many times lower than the exposure from using a cell phone.� As for it being an eyesore, it is currently unknown where the tower will be placed on the property, or if it will be small and barely noticeable, or large such as the tower currently on Beach 108th Street. It is currently unknown whether or not the decision will be permanent, or if an alternative location suggested by the community could also be an option.

They didn’t have anything when they were here, but they’re happy to pass along something to the younger kids to have as they grow up,” Lamonakis said of her class. However, it won’t just be PS/MS 183Q students that can enjoy the playground and play area. It will be a Jointly-Operated Park with the school and NYC Parks, so kids from the neighborhood will also get to enjoy it. “This is for the community,” LamoBy Katie McFadden
The students of PS/MS 183Q (245 Beach 79th Street) will soon have a place to play in their school yard thanks to a dedicated teacher who believes her kids deserve better. In the spring of 2018, Sonya Lamonakis, gave her seventh-grade math class an assignment—create a playground. They set out into their bare-bones school yard to take measurements, discuss markings and what they would like to see there. What they may not have known at the time was that their plans would become more than just a school project, but something that future students would actually get to enjoy. The whole idea started soon after Lamonakis became a teacher at the school. “I had lunch duty and I felt really bad for the children because all they have is this cement yard with nothing to play on and it bothered me, I thought that it was horrible that they didn’t have anything. So I started looking into different options, like fundraisers or a carnival, but I got quotes and found out that it would take a million dollars to build something. I knew I wasn’t going to be able to raise that much on my own, so I reached out for help,” Lamonakis said. After her students drafted up a plan, Lamonakis
reached out to Councilman Donovan Richards’ office and presented the need for a play area and the desires of her students. Richards listened. After a few meetings that involved Richards, some of the students, and the NYC Parks Department, Richards returned with some good news—he would allocate the $1 million needed for the project. It wasn’t long before Lamonakis was meeting with the School Construction Authority, city architects and others to come up with a final plan, incorporating what her students had designed. The plan calls for a full-size track, a soccer field, new trees, benches, two fun tunnels, a painted-on obstacle course for kids to race in, three basketball nets, and a playground complete with climbing components and slides. Even better, many components of the play area are ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant, so students of all abilities will be able to enjoy it. The project has recently gone out to bid and Lamonakis said it’s expected to break ground in October and could be ready by spring 2020. Lamonakis’ class that designed the playground just graduated this year, so they won’t get to really enjoy the results of their ideas, but they’re
nakis said. “I’ve been a resident for five years, so I’m still new but I’m trying to make a difference and create better opportunities for the kids here. I’ve noticed in my time here that there’s not a lot for the kids to do. I think this will be really beneficial to them.” To see this project become a reality means the world to Lamonakis. “I never thought it would happen. I’m a professional fighter and boxer and I have some world titles, but to do this for the kids is better than any world title I can win,” she said.

ST. JOHN’S CELEBRATES 45TH ANNUAL ST. JOHN’S DAY time talking to some of the boys and their families. Madeline Enlow of Intuition Body Art & Entertainment also brought a splash of color to the cloudy day by painting the faces of the kids. Most importantly, some important people were recognized on St. John’s Day. Ruscillo presented one of the St. John’s graduates, Tyquane S., with a plaque and t-shirt in recognition of his accomplishments. Since he does so much, in return, CEO Corinne Hammons, St. John’s Residence for Boys held its 45th Annual St. John’s Day on Friday, June 21, in front of the residence. Poor weather put a damper on some of the morning activities, but it didn’t dampen spirits as everyone still had a great time. Members of the St. John’s community, residents, staff, board members and friends came out to have some fun, enjoy some delicious food and celebrate the achievements of the young men. Daniel Ruscillo, NYPD Officers Martini and Mercado, and St. John’s staff members helped man the grill to keep everyone full throughout the day, and members of House on the Rock Church joined by leading everyone in a blessing and spending

Anyone who runs marathons should know the history of the event. In 490 B.C., Pheidippides ran across the Plains of Marathon to Athens to announce the defeat of the Persian army. Once he arrived at the Atheneum, he informed the crowd about the great victory, then he collapsed and died. To quote Robert Browning: “Unforseeing one! Yes, he fought on Marathon day: so, when Persia was dust, all cried, ‘To Acropolis! Run, Pheidippides, one race more.’ Till in Athens, he broke: 'Rejoice, we conquer!' Joy in his blood bursting his heart, he died—the bliss!” Recent medical advances may have finally found an answer to why he died. Since 2000, the frequency of sudden death due to cardiac arrest has been rising in middle-aged men who run marathons and triathlons. It is an indisputable fact that

Marathon Lessons regular exercise has a cardioprotective effect, however vigorous exercise may trigger sudden cardiac death. In Japan, cardiac resuscitation personnel are stationed along marathon routes to resuscitate fallen runners, thereby reducing the number of sudden deaths. It is thought that men, especially middle-aged marathon runners and triathletes, may have undetected, or subclinical, coronary artery disease. Considering the fact that the first medication given to those suffering from a heart attack is aspirin, it is now a recommendation that some middle-aged male runners take a single pre-race dose of aspirin. In addition, it is being increasingly recommended that middle-aged males who run these races undergo a cardiac CT scan to assess their coronary artery calcium score. High coronary artery calcium scores (>100) have been linked to significant risk of sudden death during these races. The explanation for increased
coronary artery disease and calcium scores in experienced endurance athletes is that inflammation seen with repeated bouts of extreme exercise is caused by repeated episodes of rhabdomyolysis, which is the breakdown of muscle tissue. Muscle soreness after exercise is common, but muscle damage after extreme exercise is also common. This severe muscle damage releases toxins like myoglobin, a muscle protein, into the bloodstream, which causes inflammation and damages the inner lining of blood vessels, known as the endothelium. Repeated episodes of rhabdomyolysis and endothelial damage are thought to cause narrowing, thickening, plaque formation, and calcification of blood vessels. Smaller blood vessels, like coronary arteries, are more susceptible than larger ones. During vigorous exercise, these plaques may rupture, causing sudden occlusion of the vessel and sudden death. A study was done on runners
in the Boston Marathon. Male runners who had no symptoms other than muscle soreness had positive biomarkers in their blood similar to those undergoing acute coronary events. These markers included high cardiac troponins, high C-reactive proteins, and high levels of other markers like B-natriuretic peptide. They also had cardiac dysfunction seen on echocardiography. By using the calcium score, middle-aged endurance runners may assess their risk and need to use pre-race aspirin. So, if you are a male between 32 to 46 and an extreme athlete, get your doctor to order a cardiac CT scan (if your insurance will approve it, that is) and discuss your risk and need to use aspirin with your doctor. If only Hippocrates, who knew of and used aspirin, had been present at the Atheneum, Pheidippides might have been saved. Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes.com.

Feeling Blessed Waking up each day, I have a feeling of gratitude for all that I have, and truly know I have been blessed with a beautiful family, friends and community. My intention is to share this feeling of gratitude to those who do not wake up feeling happy and content. There is so much suffering and anguish in life and I wish I could take your pain away. It is hard to sit with heartache and sorrow. If it is not in your nature to be unhappy, you may have trouble understanding why people look on the dark side rather than on the bright side.
I was fortunate to be born into a family of love, compassion and happiness. My parents came from Scotland and Ireland and were madly in love with one another. In their childhoods, they would endure many hardships. Somehow, they rose above it all and provided a strong foundation for seven children to live a life worth living. We would all experience a wonderful childhood and become best friends for life. We were blessed to be born into a family of love and faith. This would make us very happy human beings.
Hardships and losses would eventually knock on our doors. We would be devastated by the loss of our 22-year-old brother, John. It would change our lives forever. We would witness the grief of our mother and father and would never forget the sadness that came from the loss of a child and a broken heart. Soon after my brother died, my mother would get sick and pass away. We all would experience a broken heart and much suffering while caring for our sick mom. But my father, who had a strong faith, would learn to keep us together. We overcame our grief and learned to move on in life with these powerful lessons, never taking anything for granted and truly knowing how to live in the moment and live with contentment. One day at a time. There are many people who have lost a loved one and feel they can’t go on. Perhaps, you could bring a good memory and feel blessed by their love. We don’t know how long we have to live or what will come our way, but I do know this. We have this
The Rockaway Times moment, this time and I would encourage you to choose to be happy and share the love you have in your heart. If there is someone who needs a shoulder to cry on, then share your shoulder. We are here to support one another and guide each other on the path they call life. Life can be very hard. The Kids Are Alright By Lou Pastina
On a bright sunny Saturday morning, after weeks of nonstop rain, the mermaid and I drove down to Beach 74th
Street to a lot where the principal business is selling used cars. But that is just a cover for the launching pad that is the Rockaway Mermaid Brigade's entry into the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. As we exited the car and walked toward the lot, we were struck by the flurry of busy, multi-colored mermen and mermaids preparing for their big day. You see they are defending float champs from last year’s parade. But it’s not just the float that carries the day, it’s the band playing on top, it’s the glittering, winged, horned and just plain wigged-out creatives that adorn the float. Everything nautical-themed is thrown into the mix. Local famed artists are decorating, along with musicians wiring the all-important generator that will power their music, and people are adding make-up
touches to some pretty outrageous costumes. Not sure how it all got started (as Dylan once opined), but I do know what they do with their lives. Some, many are teachers, and not just any type of teacher, but teachers who mentor those that are very special. Some are in the pet business, grooming and caring for our furry friends here in Rockaway. Some are mathematicians, some are carpenters’ wives…sorry, got carried away with Dylan again. But one actually does sell used cars, so if you need a deal… Where does the tradition come from? Well certainly Mardi Gras at the end of the summer has the same feel, and that was imported from the Islands. Some of it comes from the Rockaway of old times…the bungalow colonies, when parties would include themed-costumes. I remember, (barely) the toga parties, and falling space satellite parties from the 101st Street bungalows. But even decades before there were creative types who would frequent the bungalow colonies and put on mini-shows within parties. Some of it comes from the 1960s. Remember Ken Kesey and Neal Cassady (of On The Road fame) driving a dayglow painted bus cross-country with a band of merry pranksters aboard, spreading joy, hope and probably a fair amount of psychedelics across the country before anyone knew what they were? That was too much fun and they clamped down on that

quickly, and in most cases, rightfully so. But there was an element of fun that has remained. Later that very same day, at Low Tide Bar as Solshyne was wailing away at "HalfStep Mississippi Uptown," the mer-people’s bus arrived from a full day of sun-dappled marching in Coney Island. I am told that our happy Rockaway representatives of merriment did us proud at the parade. It will be months before they know if they won again, but it’s not really about winning. It’s about breaking out of this staid, stale existence of ours and spreading smiles and good cheer. And as the silver-clad guitarist of Indaculture joined with his capped bassist, the two joined Solshyne in the cho-
rus, "Across the Rio Grande.” The irony was not lost. Our own merry pranksters danced to the music to the enjoyment of all around, for it was still a celebration of summer solstice (mer-people celebrate for two days you know). As the sun set, the mer-people began to recess back to their home bases. But based upon what I saw this past Saturday, I would mark your calendars for this year’s Poseidon Parade at the end of the summer—it’s going to be splendiferous! Yeah, I would say the kids are all right.

For the hardier, a walk to the base of the falls provides an amazing photo opportunity as the water cascades down only yards away from where you are standing. The only caveat here is that in order to reach the base, you’ll have to walk down what seems like thousands of steps. Not quite, but that’s the way it’ll feel on the way back up.
Don’t let that discourage you. The view and photo ops at the base are well worth the cardio exercise. If you’d really like to do cardio, head over to the Central Rock Gym and try your skill on the rock wall. While it’s not El Capitan in Yellowstone, the variety of skill sets required around the wall will be challenging. Give it a shot and see if you can reach the top. It turns out that Syracuse is far more than just a University and well worth a second look.

UNLIMITED SICK LEAVE FOR NYC 9/11 RESPONDERS PASSES LEGISLATURE Unlimited sick leave for NYC workers who were 9/11 First Responders, S.5890, passed the legislature in the final day of the session. The bill codifies access to unlimited sick leave for NYC workers who responded to 9/11 and ensures that it cannot be negotiated on a piecemeal basis by a Mayoral administration. The legislation, sponsored by State Senator Andrew Gounardes and Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato, provides stability and guaranteed sick leave benefits for all who responded to 9/11. “Those who risked their lives without hesitation running into burning buildings and those who served by returning in the aftermath to save the lives of others, exposed themselves to dangerous chemicals and toxins that have lasting effects. Effects that now, 18 years later, are killing many of the vital personnel who risked

From The Writer’s Club At MS/PS 114 WRITING THEIR WRONGS—WHY KIDS LOVE CREATIVE WRITING Whoever said, “Silence is golden,” didn’t understand children. In fact, there are too many things that kids are silent about. But, writing creates that essential dialogue between student and teacher, child and adult, through which a child can share the things that make him happy or sad. I discovered, more than anything else, children want to feel special. Making them feel special is just as important as teaching them the “Three R’s”. These writers feel special (their feelings are validated; they have our approval) and being published in The Rockaway Times has boosted their confidence immeasurably. I hope you enjoy this week’s installment from my talented students at P.S./ M.S. 114 -Joan Diehl JOHN LABIANCA On March 22, 2019, I became the youngest king for a day, King John I, a descendant of writing royalty. I was pronounced King by Queen Diehl in Kingdom 114 in the Fifth Division Castle of Writing. Mrs. Diehl started calling up names to get homework. “John”, she smiled, “I just wanted you to know that your work is magnificent; a college student couldn’t have done better, and that’s why you got a five.” A smile crept across my face. (Usually the highest grade you could get would be 4.5.) Then she asked me “Did you get into the school of your choice?” I told her, “Yes, I got into Scholars.” She told me I deserved it. My smile grew larger. After that phenomenon, she asked “Would anyone like to read their anecdote?” I bet about half the class raised their hands, but she picked me. It was about my beloved dog Molly, and how she was taken from our family. After hearing the story, Mrs. Diehl offered me one of her dogs and added, “If you keep it up then you’ll be getting a scholarship to Harvard one day,” then corrected herself and said Yale. She also told me I was one of the top five
best writers in the grade. Geewiz with all these compliments she may as well have told me I could run for President. Oh wait, she did! I was definitely feeling like a King that day. SARAH GILMARTIN Sylvia Plath said, “The worst enemy to creativity is selfdoubt.” Self-doubt has always held me back from what I want to be. The negativity flows like and endless loop in my head… I have been chasing perfection all my life—climbing a never-ending ladder, striving to reach the top of my class… I had always wanted the spotlight to be on me and that day finally happened. The day I felt as tall as a skyscraper. The day I felt like Queen of the world... I had been striving all year. Finally the day came where I learned that if I work hard enough anything is possible. It all started in creative writing. Mrs. Diehl announced, “If you hear your name called, you’ve been published in The Rockaway Times this week. When my name was called, I popped up like a jack-in-the-box. I was as proud as a peacock. GABRIELLA KRETT “Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.”Dr. Seuss My best memory was in creative writing. I was Queen of the day. I was as joyful as a puma catching its prey. I felt like I had just entered a whole new world, a world filled with happiness and joy. My story would be published in a book called Spooky Sagas. I had never been published before and now victory was mine. I felt like I had found the gold at the end of the rainbow. I felt like Santa had arrived early. I wanted to race down the halls and cartwheel until I was dizzy. My heart was pounding like a hammer on wood. I couldn’t believe that I could write so amazingly. I wanted to brag and boast to the world. When I was too tired to brag anymore, I went to bed with a tornado of

happiness swirling around me. I felt like a new me. A better me. Suddenly, I felt more confident than usual… SOPHIA SCHABNER It started off as a normal Wednesday with butterflies in my stomach and probably in my brain, too, because I could not think clearly about how well I had done my Creative writing homework. As I waited for Mrs. Diehl, the butterflies grew as if eating my worry, a delicious snack for them. Eventually Mrs. Diehl gave me my paper and smiled, “Good job, you have really improved.” I looked at the paper, not sure what to expect. When I saw the grade, my body filled up with two emotions, joy and pride. I felt like I would explode. I had gotten a 4.5. I had been waiting to get a 4.5 for ages. I was ready to jump for joy. In what felt like seconds Ms. Diehl was starting the class by complimenting me, and then she asked, “Can I read your paper to the class?” Then just as I became sure I would pop, Mrs. Diehl added, “Your writing is going to be published in The Rockaway Times”. ARIANA MOSCHETTA A week ago, I spent a “Beautiful Me” session with my favorite teacher, Mrs. Locastro. A ring of chatter surrounded the room, girls blabbering back and forth to their friends. I sat there, silently thinking. Mrs. Locastro was my favorite teacher, and I wanted to do something nice for her. So that’s when It hit me. I should write her a little note! So I scribbled a little note on a piece of paper, telling her that she is the best teacher and I enjoy her class so much. “Thank you so much Ariana, you’re so sweet!” Mrs. Locastro grinned at me, her glasses perched on the bridge of her nose. The next day, she smiled at me, and whispered, “Ariana, I hung up your note in my kitchen. I look at it every morning!” That was the best I’d ever felt all year, especially because I’ve had such
a tough year. I’ve had friends come and go and have been really upset about it. Words can mean so much and can make someone have a better day… WILLIAM WALSH I wrote a poem this year that actually was worthy of being printed in The Rockaway Times! It all started one simple day in The Writers’ Club when I decided to write about my drawings. I really wanted to write a good poem that came from my heart, so I focused on it like a hawk observing its prey. All of the rhymes I came up with popped into my head like flashes from a lightbulb. Once I showed Mrs. Diehl my poem, she said, “This is amazing!” with a surprised tone in her voice. Her heartwarming words made me so confident to finally realize that I have a gift of writing creatively. At the end of the class, Mrs. Diehl spoke to my mother about how good my poem was, and that she would publish it in The Rockaway Times. My mother and I waited patiently and behold, there it was! My poem was actually published for everyone to see. This was the day that I felt like a king! AMANDA SCOTTO Writing has always been my favorite subject. It was always so easy for me. But then came fifth grade. You think you’re a good writer until you take a writing class with Mrs. Diehl. But, Mrs. Diehl helped me through everything. If there was anything that I found harder than searching for a needle in a hay stack, Mrs. Diehl was there. Ms. Diehl is my guideline to victory. She is my “stone of hope”. Mrs.Diehl is an extraordinary teacher with ideas that will knock you off your seats. Ms. Diehl coming into the fifth grade as a teacher was like sending down an angel from heaven. She taught me so much. I will never forget this exhilarating experience that changed my relationship with writing forever.

‘Respect Rockaway’ Campaign Aims To Educate Beachgoers Starting next week, “Talk Some Trash,” “Keep It Clean,” “Hold Your Butts,” “Protect The Beach,” are some of the slogans you will soon see on signs posted on MTA bus shelters, at the ferry landing and storefronts throughout the peninsula. What is this all about? A campaign entitled, “Respect Rockaway,” aimed to educate NYC residents and Rockaway’s visitors and locals about the impact of beach trash on ocean conservation, and beach awareness and water safety. “Respect Rockaway,” launched by Surfrider Foundation NYC and NYC based creative studio, Selman, partially funded with a grant from Patagonia, is set to roll out for the July 4th holiday weekend, and will run throughout the month of July. Ten different messages with friendly reminders on how to keep the beach and beachgoers safe will be featured. According to Surfrider, the July 4th holiday weekend attracts over 200,000 beachgoers, producing high
volumes of trash each year. The campaign will be officially announced at an organized beach clean-up this Saturday, June 29, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Beach 67th Street. Surfrider Foundation is an environmental nonprofit organization that advocates for the protection and enjoyment of the ocean, waves and beaches, through a powerful grassroots activist network. The local NYC chapter focuses on campaigns and programs that create impact on a local and national level targeting threats from fossil fuels, reducing plastic pollution and monitoring water quality issues. "Lying in close proximity to Manhattan, the Rockaway peninsula is home to the largest ur-
ban beach in the U.S.,” Surfrider NYC Chair Nikita Scott said. “Surfrider has a long history of advocating for the environmental interests of Rockaway. It is our intention to continue supporting efforts to strengthen Rockaway by providing practical solutions to keeping the beach healthy.” Selman is a NYC-based creative studio with ties to the Rockaway area. Just last year the studio re-branded Bungalow Bar. Selman’s founder and creative director, Johnny Selman, is a Rockaway resident, who learned about Surfrider while following Patagonia Action Works, and attended some of Surfrider’s monthly meetings at the Patagonia Bowery. In learning about how much Surfrider was doing for his community, Selman reached out to see how his design studio could help. “It’s all about how small acts of respect have a much larger impact,” he said. “By respecting Rockaway, you’re respecting the com-

munity, the environment and yourself.” In addition to the media and signage posted throughout Rockaway, there will be “Respect Rockaway” stickers and apparel available for purchase at Surfrider Foundation NYC’s website. “Respect Rockaway” is set to run for the summer, but Surfrider hopes that the initiative will create enough impact to be adopted by Rockaway and the NYC community at large for years to come.
