TENANT IMPROVEMENT PROJECT COMISSIONED BY FENWICK & WEST LAWFIRM TO TRANSFORM 3 STORIES IN EXISTING BUILDING INTO A DYNAMIC OFFICE SPACE THAT REFLECTS THE IMAGE AND P HILOSPPHY OF THE COMPANY. THE PROJECT BRINGS IN THE VIBRANT, UPSCALE AND ARTFUL SCENE OF THE COASTAL CITY OF SANTA MONICA AND ADAPTS IT TO THE ROBUST AND FORWARD-THINKING VISION OF THE LAWFIRM, THUS CREATING A UNIQUE HYBRID.

THE SCOPE OF WORK COVERS THE 1ST, 3RD AND 4TH FLOOR INCLUDING THE PATIOS ON THE 1ST AND 4TH TOTALLING 16,380 SF. AS A JOB CAPTAIN I WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR TAKING THE PROJECT FROM DESIGN DEVELOPMENT TO CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS AND PERMITTING, IN ADDITION TO THE CONSTRUCTION ADMINSTRATION WORK THAT FOLLOWED AFTER.

this thesis begins with surveying the existing tensions and dynamics that act as the parameters for what make up the cultural agents defining society. the waterfront area is the start point of this work, acting as the heterotopia with its vague proximity/detachment in respect to the city alongside the transient activities mainly being a hopeless pursuit of escapism incubated in hedonistic nightlife venues. the following constitutes as the cornerstone for the construction of a speculative fiction targeting and criticizing a broader range of current-day realities; an imaginary series of augmented spaces laid along a narrative in which a subject pass through. this fictive project does not propose itself as a series of finite answers ambitiously trying to define the ongoing dynamics in society nor does it follow the discourse of defining a utopia/dystopia but rather proposes an autonomous realm where answers are not the subject of matter but rather the questions are. the proposal lays out the ground for triggering questions in a critical fashion, aiming to break out of whatever reality forced upon the subject, subsequently, the subject is charged to breakout of their mindset to pursue an alternative reality, one that exposes the true potential of their intellectual and physical capacity. in order to materialize and rationalize the latter proposal, a taxonomy is constructed, being made up of the culture agents, their subculture components, the method in how the agent is to be augmented, the technology deployed in order to achieve this augmentation and finally a list of physics components defining the shape of the volume incubating the augmentation. the generated outcome would be the narrative and the respective “objects” laid down within its framework. the spaces are rendered as objects, eliminating any pre-conceived human-constructed definitions and labels of what the “objects” function/purpose is, allowing the object to exist in a hyper-state of its own succeeding any human conceptions of it. the objective is to enable the subjects to utilize the limitless potential of these “objects” to the point of breaking out of the augmentation proposed which is a personal input by the author. the final outcome of the narrative is to have all the activity and input produced by the subjects collected and used to ambitiously further produce these alternative realities proposed

THE SUDIO AIMED AT REGENERATING THE CRAFTSMAN ACTIVITY IN GEMMAYZE [DISTRICT IN BEIRUT], RECALLING THE ORIGINAL FUNCTIONS OF THE AREA THAT DATED BACK TO PRE- CIVIL WAR TIMES. THE CENTER ACTS AS A CATALYST FOR THIS CAUSE WHERE IT PROVIDES SPACES FOR CARPENTERS, ARTISIANS AND BLACKSMITHS THAT EXTEND ON THE TESSALATED SURFACES OF THE PROJECT, ALLOWING FOR ASSIMILATION OF THE DIFFERENT SPACES. IN ADDITION, THESE ‘SURFACES’ EXTEND TO PROVIDE SPACE FOR OTHER FUNCTIONS ENCOPORATED IN THE PROJECT SUCH AS AN EXHIBITION SPACE THAT PROMOTES THE END PRODUCTS OF THE LABOR, A CAFETERIA/ MEDIA ROOM THAT PROVIDES AN INTERACTIVE LEARNING HUB FOR THE VISITORS OF THIS CENTER WHICH AIMS AT BACKING UP THE KNOWLEDGE BEHIND THE WORK OF THE CRAFTSMAN THUS ENRICHING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THEM AND THE PUBLIC.

THE LOUVER SYSTEM ACTS AS A RESPONSE TO ENVIRONEMENTAL ISSUES REGARDING THE BUILDING. IN ADDITION, T AIDS THE CONCEPT OF CONTINU TY THROUGH THE TS COHERENT AND UNIFIED FORM. THE FACADE SYSTEM IS A SERIES OF LOUVERS NTERPOLATING IN A CURVILINEAR MANNER TO OPEN AND CLOSE AT SPECIFIED AREAS ACCORDING TO LIGHT PENETRATION AND VENTILATION SCALE

ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEM

TWO VAR ABLES AFFECT THE CHARACTERISTICS OF EACH FLOOR: CEILING HEIGHT AND LIGHT NTENSITY [ I.E LIGHT PENETRATED]. THE UNDULATIONS OF THE SURFACES RESULT IN CLEAR HEIGHT CHANGES FROM FLOOR TO FLOOR AND EVEN ON THE SAME FLOOR. AS WELL AS THE LOUVERS THAT OPEN AND CLOSE W TH DIFFERENT APERTURES THAT CONTROL THE QUANTITY OF LIGHT PENETRATED THE TWO FOLLOWING FACTORS FORCE THE IDEA OF TRANS TION W THIN THE MIND OF THE OCCUPANT WITHOUT ACTUALLY HAVING WALLS AND STAIRS FRAGMENT THE SPACE. THE TWO FACTORS CHANGE THE QUALITIES OF THE SPACE ACCORDING TO FUNCTION.

SPECULATIVE VIRTUAL SPACE

THE PROJECT REVOLVED AROUND THE USE OF AN ARRAY OF TOOLS ACCUMULATED FROM DIFFERENT SOFTWARE TO CREATE A SPECULATIVE SPACE AIMED AT PROVIDING A VIRTUAL EXPERIENCE - ONE THAT IS REALTED TO SOUND. THE EXPERIMENT PLACES THE INDIVIDUAL IN A SURREAL LANDSCAPE WITH THE TOWER BEING ROOTED AT THE CENTER. THE USER WILL APPROACH THE TOWER AND BE MET WITH 4 PORTALS TRANSPORTING HIM/HER TO THE DESIRED “POD”, ALTERNATIVELY THE USER CAN TAKE THE STAIRS WHERE HE/SHE CAN TRAVEL THROUGH THE TOWER AND EXPERIENCE IT WHOLE FROM START TO FINISH. EACH POD HAS ITS OWN NICHE SOUND CATEGORY BEING IT TECHNO, ROCK, INDIE WITH THE DESIGN REFLECTING ELEMENTS OF THE CULTURE SURROUNDING THAT SOUND. THE PATH WILL LEAD THE USER THROUGH ALL THE PODS AND THE BRIDGES CONNECTING THEM TO FINALLY REACH A VIEWING POD OVERLOOKING THE ENTIRE LANDSCAPE FROM ABOVE.

VARIOUS EXPLORATIONS //

THE FOLLOWING ARE EXPERIMENTATIONS CONDUCTED USING DIFFERENT SOFTWARE (RHINO GRASSHOPPER, ZBRUSH, BLENDER, MAYA) TO EXPLORE THE CAPABALITIES THESE SOFTWARE HAVE AND HOW EACH’S TOOLS CAN BE MERGED WITH ANOTHER TO CREATE A UNIFIED BODY OF WORK. IN TODAY’S CLIMATE OF TRANSITION FROM THE DIGITAL TO THE VIRTUAL, THE CHALLENGE LIES IN HOW CAN THIS TRANSITION ENHANCE THE USER EXPERIENCE AND TRANSCEND THEIR PSYCHE INTO A WORLD WHERE THERE ARE LIMITLESS POSSIBILITIES.
