t was Lynn Menster’s work in the social sector that sparked her interest in participating in the dinner in the dark event. Hosted at the Grand Hôtel Cravat as part of the Ville de Luxembourg’s disability awareness week, the dinner allowed guests to experience briefly what it would be like to cope with blindness. “Working with people who are missing one of the senses, and hearing about dinner in the dark restaurant events abroad, I was interested to experience what it would be like to eat without seeing.” The sign language interpreter was surprised by some of what she experienced, such as not being able to judge exactly how much was on her fork, but says she enjoyed the event. “We had to use our hands to feel our way around the plate or to help shove food on to the fork, which was ok as nobody could see.” Q

ynn Menster travaille dans le secteur social. Sensibilisée aux problèmes du handicap, elle était très intéressée par l’idée du « dîner dans le noir ». Organisé au Grand Hôtel Cravat dans le cadre de la semaine de sensibilisation au handicap, lancée par la Ville de Luxembourg, ce dîner donnait aux participants l’occasion de ressentir et de comprendre les difficultés des non-voyants au quotidien. « Mon travail me sensibilise aux problèmes des personnes souffrant d’une déficience sensorielle. J’avais entendu parler de ces dîners dans le noir total, organisés dans d’autres pays, et j’étais curieuse d’en faire l’expérience. » Surprenante à bien des égards (comment savoir ce qu’il y a sur sa fourchette, par exemple), l’expérience lui a plu. « Il fallait tâter son assiette pour en imaginer le contenu ou s’aider de ses doigts pour pousser la nourriture sur la fourchette, mais comme personne ne voyait son voisin, ce n’était pas gênant ! » Q
