A Bright New Future

Dear Friends of the Gardens, After a pandemic followed by our highest visitation in history, Fiscal 2023 was all about recalibrating and preparing for our next evolution. At the highest level, our purpose is to have a positive impact on people and on the planet, and this year we completed a strategic plan for the next three years, highlighting issues of financial accessibility, inspiring climate action, and diversifying the voices, perspectives, and representation at the Gardens. Per MaineBiz’s 2022 published report, we were the third-most visited tourist destination in the state, after Acadia and Sugarloaf, and we happily embrace the opportunity to share our work and learning with people through our gardens. One of our focuses has been on intentional programming that inspires action on climate change—a situation many feel overwhelmed by. The gardens and the various education programs we offer provide people with tools and inspiration to positively affect their world. Our education numbers attest to the success of this work. On page 5 you’ll see that impact specifically, including 92,211 visitors to our Native Butterfly House, Learning Apiary, and Discovery Cart. This year we started many new community collaborations throughout the organization, providing platforms for new voices and participation from a broader tapestry of Mainers and beyond. And, as always, our work remains centered on our first mission priority, the gardens. In 2022, we adopted a Living Plant Collections Policy. Our living collections are at the heart of what we do, inspiring people to connect with and appreciate plants and the natural world while also supporting our horticultural, educational, and scientific goals. We want to ensure that our collections bring joy and delight to visitors, foster an appreciation for the diversity of plants and the wildlife they support, and encourage interest in the art and practice of horticulture, sustainable horticulture, and landscape design. I’m especially excited about the strides our Plant Science and Conservation team is making—the Gardens is becoming a place where we can identify climate change impacts to plants and ecosystems and lead conservation efforts in response. All of this would not be possible without our people. From our wildly talented staff to the generosity of volunteers and donors, and from our avid members to our first-time visitors, you brought life and energy to our gardens this year, and we look forward to stepping into a bright future together.

We aspire for all people to have the opportunity to engage meaningfully with the natural world. Gardens for All is an effort to make the Gardens as accessible as possible and to ensure guests’ financial situations do not limit their ability to visit. Through the program, anyone eligible may visit the Gardens at no cost, and recipients may receive up to four general admission tickets per visit. Gardens for All makes the Gardens an economically accessible destination for all Mainers.

We have begun an innovative, dialoguebased approach to environmental education called Sparking Conversations, which engages visitors with environmental issues. Made possible by a grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services, the project includes two major components. New signage features local stories of how the landscape is being impacted by climate change and a tour of the Gardens examines shifts in human behaviors and the future of our interactions with nature.

Plant Science We launched our plant conservation program with several new initiatives in partnership with Native Plant Trust, Oak Spring Foundation, Maine Natural Areas Program, and Maine Outdoor Heritage Fund, allowing us to leverage regional conservation efforts. We developed the Gardens’ first conservation collection plan, Asclepias of the Northeastern United States Collection Development Plan, and coordinated with regional partners to develop a novel and complementary focus for our seed banking project, Conserving Genetic Diversity of Vulnerable Peripheral Populations.

We expanded the Gardens’ living collections information to enhance visitor engagement with support from Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust. The project included launching Garden Explorer website, creating new plant labels, GPS mapping thousands of living collection specimens, photographing new taxa, and adding data (like rarity and hardiness) about each plant taxon.

As the Gardens expands, so does our staff. We added 3 additional people to our horticulture team—a horticulturist, a seasonal gardener, and an intern.

Community Partnerships

Our Boothbay Peninsula Garden Education Program is led by Youth and Family Programs Manager, Erika Huber, who was inspired to rethink how she might support environmental education for local students. The project includes an engaging, appropriate curriculum, gardening supplies, and a grow light for each classroom and curricula ranging in topics from pollinators and decomposers to plant life cycles and growing your own food.

During Set for Success, a program that provides all schoolaged children in the district the school supplies they need when they return to school in the fall, the Gardens participated by giving away memberships, nature-inspired stickers, and sharing fun educational opportunities about our native pollinators. As members of the Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce, and with representation on their Board of Directors, the Gardens bolsters local businesses and supports the community’s economic well-being, allowing for increased “cross pollination” with organizations and businesses in the region.

When asked to join the Boothbay Region Clean Drinking Water Initiative, we did not hesitate. The work of the Initiative is deeply connected to our mission. As a neighbor in the watershed, we want to be part of this team. Water is critically important to everybody who lives here on the peninsula, for continued happiness and health. Gardenshop’s local-maker ethos features mission-related, ethically sourced items that provide tangible memories of the Gardens. Staff

Our 68 full-time and 29 part-time staff make the Gardens grow. It takes a lot to sustain and grow world-class botanical gardens. Our horticulture team alone brings 287 years of experience, while our plant science team brings experience from 17 different public gardens and plant science organizations from across the country. Our adult education team has led a whopping 545 classes over the past five years.

Unique Opportunities Great Lawn Ambassadors greet guests, offer garden information, assist with guest maps, give directions, and answer questions—a fun role for the volunteer and very helpful to guests.

Learning Apiary Docents answer questions and engage guests in the wonders of the Learning Apiary. They help guests learn more about our honeybees and beekeeping. All docents are trained and mentored by expert Gardens staff.

Absolutely beautiful. Excellent maps and signage throughout. There were several areas with interesting musical instrument exhibits that you could play (fun for kids and adults). It was so much more than ‘just plants’— something for everyone. I would rate this 10 stars if allowed! We had three mobility challenged friends, so we took a private golf cart tour of the gardens. The volunteer guide was so kind and incredibly knowledgeable. The gardens were beyond amazing, as was the visitor center. Parking was plentiful and an easy walk to the entrance. I cannot wait to return with grandchildren to let them experience the children’s gardens. If you are looking for peace in a beautiful setting this is it. We spent hours here and could have spent more time. I feel like around every turn there was something new to explore. And it was such a peaceful place. Beautiful flowers, beautiful grounds and the joy of discovering huge trolls! We are planning another stay in Maine just so we can go here again. Absolute perfection!

Worth every penny. I’ll admit I haven’t been to many botanical gardens, but I was tremendously impressed. Grounds are breathtaking with so many different areas and the trolls were a plus. But what really impressed me was the staff and volunteers. They were SO friendly and helpful. That was what really impressed me!

Our gardens are the inspiration and the foundation for all we aspire to do. From changing the lives of people to the science of changes in plants, change is in our nature.

 Enhanced learning gardens and outdoor classrooms will create hands-on spaces for exploration and discovery.

Conservatory & Discovery Center

2025

 Our year-round, state-of-the-art Conservatory and Discovery Center will enable us to engage and inspire thousands more Maine schoolchildren every year. The Botanical Bus will bring students to the Gardens throughout the school year and will provide free transportation to Maine residents and families on the weekends.

Horticulture & Plant Science Center

2024

 Through this Campaign, we will expand our ability to reach guests and learners of all backgrounds through horticulture, education, and research.

Culinary Renovation Complete

2023

Guided by a refreshed master plan, our Change is in Our Nature Capital Campaign will support and address organizational and infrastructural needs, including our newly renovated Culinary Center, the Horticulture and Plant Science Center, year-round Conservatory and Discovery Center, over 14 acres of new gardens, and an expanded Education Campus.
