Welcome
The Easter holiday is behind us, but New Zealand’s economy faces fresh challenges as conflict in the Middle East triggers a surge in oil prices.
With oil costs doubling since January, Kiwis are feeling the pinch at the pump, and the ripple effects threaten supply chains, transport, and everyday living costs. Although fuel stocks remain adequate for now, concern is mounting as inflationary pressures increase and the government warns of difficult times ahead.
Previously, New Zealand’s modest economic recovery was underway, with easing inflation and lowered interest rates, but our dependence on imported oil leaves us vulnerable. Higher fuel prices are pushing up costs across sectors, from groceries to construction, forcing households to tighten budgets.
The Reserve Bank must now decide whether to raise rates to curb inflation or keep them low to support growth - and that includes the real estate sector - as the nation waits to see how this situation unfolds.

Wayne Maguire: A Fragile Recovery Meets a Global Crisis
The Easter long weekend is over, and memories of holiday celebrations, traditional hot cross buns, and everything chocolate are fading fast.
As the reality of what is going on in the Middle East creates the ripple effect, New Zealand’s already fragile economy is taking another hit. Being down here at the bottom of the world has its advantages –we’re a long way away from the hostilities. However, at a time when we are still tackling cost-of-living pressures in a post-Covid world, the war in Iran and impact on our oil supply is of major concern.
Ships are continuing to arrive with no challenges or disruptions at this stage, but there is pain up ahead.
With the price of oil doubling since the start of the year, fuel prices at the pump are immediately affecting everyday Kiwis. And then the bigger picture is the anticipated influence on the supply and delivery of our goods and services. We are essentially in the middle of the “first wave” of oil shocks. Remaining optimistic that this situation will be short-lived is tempered by commentary that this crisis not going to be resolved quickly.
Minister of Finance, Nicola Willis has publicly stated that the government is “gravely concerned” about the trajectory of the conflict and how that shakes up our economy. For now, our fuel stocks are adequate –currently petrol is at 62 days, diesel is at 52 days, and jet fuel - 50 days. Fuel importers are saying they are not concerned – yet.
Before these oil shocks the New Zealand economy was showing signs of momentum with things on a slightly firmer footing. The war in Middle East could not have come at a worse time for our fragile economy and its modest recovery trajectory. While not vastly impressive, inflation was at least easing, GDP growth was 0.2%, and the RBNZ had cut the OCR from 5.5% to 2.25% to stimulate the economy. We are a small, vulnerable nation heavily dependent on imported oil and any sustained disruptions can have dire consequences.
Looking to the immediate future, there will be a range of repercussions for our fuel supply chains. Increased fuel prices create inflation because oil has such a pivotal part to play in pretty much everything we rely on. Goods need to move in and out and around the country – so transport and manufacturing costs will inevitably go up. Airlines are already cutting flights on some of their provincial routes. Material costs in the construction and agriculture sectors thanks to diesel price increases are set to cause inflation.
Food goes up and then our weekly supermarket spend – an already tight budget – pushes us to make hard decisions and spend less in other areas. It’s an everdecreasing circle.
With reduced confidence, anticipated higher inflation and the Reserve Bank potentially feeling the pressure to keep interest rates high for longer, the real estate market could soften. In a sector that has been in recovery mode with fresh green shoots of activity appearing, this oil crisis is an unwelcome speed bump. It remains to be seen how the next weeks and months play out but the Reserve Bank faces a tough choice: it may raise interest rates to curb inflation from rising fuel costs or lower them to help the economy.
If inflation takes hold, it could stick around, but if the economy isn’t robust enough, things could get worse. We’re at a critical turning point due to this ongoing conflict. We can only hope that our economy is able to “snatch victory from the jaws of defeat”.
It’s a decision that’s out of our hands – we wait and watch and hope.
A horticulturist’s guide to pet-friendly indoor plants
Source: yourhomeandgarden.co.nz
Ensure your indoor jungle remains a safe haven for your furry friends with horticulturist Tammy Huynh’s suggestions for non-toxic plants.
Some plants are toxic for our furry friends, who are often curious and like to play with or nibble on leaves. It’s important to research and choose varieties that are safe for animals. Always check for pet safety before bringing new plants home. If you have your heart set on plants that are considered toxic to pets, then it’s a good idea to position them out of reach, such as on high shelves, in hanging planters or within enclosed terrariums.
1. Fern leaf cactus
Epiphyllum chrysocardium
(syn. Selenicereus chrysocardium)
Care: Low maintenance
Pet friendly: Yes
Light: Bright, indirect light
This is such a beautiful plant, don’t you think?
The fern leaf cactus looks similar to the fishbone cactus, but its broader, lush, flattened stems (cladodes) give it a softer appearance. As it grows, it spills wildly out of the pot. This quality makes it fabulous for imparting a tropical feel to indoor spaces. It’s a jungle cactus that grows as an epiphyte in the crooks of trees in its native Mexico. Unlike its desert cousins, it thrives in lower light, making it an excellent houseplant.
However, it won’t handle prolonged dry conditions, so be sure not to neglect its watering needs. The fern leaf cactus can produce large white or pale pink blooms, but they are rarely seen in an indoor setting. If you want to encourage this, then it’s best to position the plant outside.
When keeping it indoors, place the fern leaf cactus on a shelf or hang it from the ceiling to add a sculptural element to your vertical space and so you can fully enjoy its freeflowing, luscious stems. If the fullsized plant is too big for your shelf space, then you can simply grow cuttings in decorative vases or recycled jars. You can also mount a fern leaf cactus onto a board using sphagnum moss, but be aware that you’ll need to water it more often because moss dries out more quickly than potting mix. It makes for an intriguing display, though.
The dirt on the fern leaf cactus
Light: The fern leaf cactus thrives in bright, indirect light. A few hours of direct sun in the morning is ideal, but it should be filtered for the remainder of the day.
Potting mix: Use a moist, welldrained potting mix, such as two parts premium potting mix blended with one part perlite and one part orchid bark.
Fertiliser: Apply a general-purpose controlled-release fertiliser at the beginning of spring, reapplying as directed. Alternatively, once a month from spring to late summer, apply a liquid fertiliser that has been diluted to half strength.
Water: Water when the top 2.5–5 centimetres of potting mix is dry.
Humidity: The fern leaf cactus can tolerate the standard level of humidity found in most homes. It will appreciate a little more humidity if you can manage it, but it’s not necessary. To maintain a stable environment, it’s best to avoid placing the plant near draughts or air-conditioning vents.
Common problems of the fern leaf cactus
Surprisingly, this plant doesn’t seem to be plagued with problems. Overwatering or incorrect potting mix may lead to issues with root rot, but provided you use a moist, well drained potting mix and only water when it’s nearly dry, then your plant will be pretty happy.
Growing tips: Propagate your fern leaf cactus Whether your fern leaf cactus has grown too large and needs a haircut, or it’s looking a little bald at the top, propagation is a simple and rewarding way to rejuvenate your plant or to expand your cacti collection. Grab a sharp pair of secateurs, then follow these step-by-step instructions:
1. Allow the potting mix to nearly dry out between waterings. Roots should form within four to six weeks.
2. Take a 7–10-centimetre cutting from the end of a stem (cladode).
3. Allow the cutting to callous over by placing it in a cool, dry spot for a couple of days.
4. Fill a small pot or tray with a suitable potting mix (such as a cacti and succulent mix), and insert the cut end.
5. Water in well, then position the pot in a warm, brightly lit spot out of direct sun.
2. Moth orchids
Phalaenopsis spp.
Care: Medium maintenance
Pet friendly: Yes
Light: Bright, indirect light
There are thousands of moth orchid hybrid cultivars, and the extensive breeding within this genus has led to a vast array of different flower colours, patterns and sizes. They’re readily available at nurseries, garden centres, supermarkets and florists, and their flowers look fabulous. So, they make excellent gifts for friends, family members and acquaintances. Plus, the flowers last for a while – often months –providing beauty and interest for an extended period of time.
Unfortunately, once the flowers fade, many moth orchids are discarded or neglected. Unbeknown to their owners, with the right care these orchids can produce stunning blooms again, and they’ll continue to do so for many years to come. The common name comes from the appearance of the flowers, which are said to resemble moths in flight. Despite being easily startled by flying insects, I’m certainly happy to be surrounded by these ‘moths’.
Moth orchid species are native to several regions in Asia and Australia, where they grow in warm, humid and tropical environments, often as epiphytes on trees or as lithophytes on rocks. They use their roots to anchor themselves and also to absorb moisture and nutrients from the air, rain or surrounding surfaces. Thankfully, they’ve adapted to most home environments, without the need to be mounted onto a tree or rock.
All the dirt on moth orchids
Light: Moth orchids need a brightly lit position to thrive, especially if you want to encourage flowering. Don’t place them in direct sun, otherwise the foliage will burn, and avoid lowlight rooms.
Potting mix: Use sphagnum moss or orchid bark. Sphagnum moss can hold a significant amount of water, ensuring that there is consistent moisture for the roots, but its loose structure also allows for good air circulation around the roots.
Fertiliser: Feed regularly with an orchid-specific fertiliser when the leaves and flowers are actively growing.
Water: Insert your finger 2.5–5 centimetres into the growing medium, and feel if it’s moist or dry before watering. Moth orchids can be watered with tap water, rainwater or distilled water. If your orchid is sitting in a decorative outer pot, it’s best to remove it from the pot before watering. Take it over to the sink, run water over the growing medium and allow it to drain freely. Sit it in the sink for a few minutes to allow any excess water to drain before returning the plant to its outer pot. Reduce watering frequency in winter.
Humidity: Moth orchids thrive with 60–80 per cent humidity. Many people place their orchids in the bathroom, thinking it’s a highhumidity environment, but the humidity only increases during and a short time after a shower. Dry leaf tips, wrinkled foliage or dropping buds are all signs that the humidity may be too low.
Growing tips: Encourage repeat flowering. Once the first flowers for the season have faded and dropped off, use a sharp pair of secateurs to cut the stem back to above the first node.
Continue to care for the plant as usual, and this should encourage another flower stem to form. If the stem becomes strawcoloured or dries out, then cut it off at the base. Hopefully, this will encourage a healthy new flower stem to form.
3. Chinese money plant
Care: Low maintenance
Pet friendly: Yes
Light: Bright, indirect light I remember the obsession with this plant.
It was all over social media, and people were paying exorbitant prices for even the smallest specimens (myself included!). At the time, it was unlike anything we’d seen before in the plant world. Small to medium-sized, round, dark green, disc-like leaves perch on the ends of slender stems, which delicately emerge from a thin, corky trunk – like something out of a whimsical storybook. These days, you can find the Chinese money plant in most nurseries and garden centres at a reasonable price.
It can grow quite tall, reaching 50–60 centimetres, and often develops a bare stem with a lush crown of foliage, giving it a tree-like quality. However, it may not stay bare for long – the plant naturally produces little pups around its base. These pups can be either left to fill out the bottom of the mother plant or separated and replanted to create new plants. For this reason, it’s also known as the friendship plant or pass-it-on plant, as it’s easy to propagate and share with friends. Initially, the Chinese money plant makes an excellent desk specimen.
As it grows taller, however, it may be better on a plant stand or shelf where it won’t overwhelm the space. You may need to use a stake to keep it upright as it grows. Attach the plant loosely with a garden tie or piece of jute to avoid strangling it.
All the dirt on the Chinese money plant
Light: The Chinese money plant thrives in bright, indirect light or filtered light. Avoid placing it in direct sun because this can scorch the leaves. It won’t tolerate low light, which can result in poor growth, yellowing foliage and leaf drop.
Potting mix: Blend two parts premium potting mix with one part perlite to assist with drainage.
Fertiliser: Liquid feed regularly during the warmer months, or apply a controlled-release fertiliser at the beginning of spring, reapplying as directed.
Water: Water when the top 2.5–5 centimetres of potting mix is dry.
Humidity: Any humidity level will do, but if you ensure that it’s above 50 per cent, then the Chinese money plant will appreciate it. Keep it away from draughts, and group it with other plants to increase humidity.
Growing tips: Over time, the Chinese money plant may produce pups around its base. Once these reach around 10 centimetres in height, you can carefully separate them from the mother plant. Remove the mother plant from its pot, and gently tease the pups away.
If necessary, use a sharp pair of snips or secateurs to cut the roots. Pot the pups into small containers filled with a premium potting mix, and water them in well. Repot the mother plant back into its original pot with fresh potting mix.
The African violet deserves more love and attention.
While it’s not big or showy, its small, fleshy, dark green leaves and sweet, delicate blooms in shades of pink, violet, blue & white brighten up any space. It’s the perfect plant for adding a touch of colour indoors with minimal effort. Once dismissed as an old-fashioned plant, the African violet is making a stylish comeback. Modern cultivars boast intricate ruffled edges, mottled foliage and multipetal arrangements. With such variety and aesthetic appeal, the African violet is captivating indoor gardeners again.
Due to its compact size, it makes an excellent desk companion. Several plants can be grouped together to create a charming floral display. I’ve also seen African violets potted up in glass vessels that feature an inner pot sitting inside an outer pot. Essentially, the larger outside pot acts as a reservoir, while the smaller pot, filled with potting mix, has a wicking ribbon that draws moisture up as needed.
This set-up not only adds a modern, stylish touch to your decor but also makes caring for the plants quite easy. The self-watering system helps to maintain a consistent moisture level, reducing the risk of overwatering or underwatering. Plus, when watering from above, the leaves can become easily marked, so using this self-watering method helps to keep the foliage free from unsightly spots. This is especially important for the African violet, as its beautiful blooms and velvety leaves are best showcased without any blemishes.
All the dirt on the African violet
Light: The African violet grows best in bright, indirect light, such as on a windowsill behind a sheer curtain or tilted blinds.
Be sure to keep it away from glass or reflective surfaces, as these can transmit heat or cold, which may stress the plant. If there is not enough light, the plant will not flower. Rotate the plant regularly to maintain symmetrical growth.
Potting mix: Use a potting mix created especially for African violets. You can make your own by blending two parts coco peat, one part premium potting mix and one part perlite.
Fertiliser: Feed regularly with a liquid fertiliser specially formulated for African violets. Dilute to half or quarter strength and apply every time you water.
Water: Water when the potting mix is nearly dry, being careful to avoid getting it on the leaves, as this can cause unsightly brown marks to appear. To prevent this, gently lift the leaves and use a narrowspouted watering-can to deliver water directly to the base of the plant. Use room-temperature or slightly tepid water as cold water can shock and stress the roots.
Humidity: The African violet thrives in a slightly humid environment, ideally with around 60 per cent humidity. Keep the plant well away from draughts, heaters and air-conditioning vents, as it doesn’t tolerate cold air or dry conditions well. Maintaining an environment that is stable and warm will help to keep the plant happy and blooming.
Growing tips: Wick this way! A great tip I learned from African violet enthusiasts is to use a wicking system for watering. This technique involves utilising a synthetic cord to draw moisture from a water reservoir below the plant. The cord is inserted through the drainage hole in the pot, with one end in the potting mix and the other end submerged in the water below. This method ensures that the potting mix remains evenly moist without becoming waterlogged, reducing the risk of root rot and water splash on the leaves. It’s a great way to water, especially if you’re away from home for a week or more.

Miso mushrooms and parmesan pasta
Recipe by Claire Aldous, Photography by Yuki Sato, Source: dish.co.nz
Umami-rich mushrooms, miso and parmesan combine into a silky, luxurious weeknight pasta dinner that just needs a crisp green salad for balance.
SERVES: 2
INGREDIENTS
• 200 grams dried pasta (we used bucatini)
• 100 grams baby spinach
• 3 tablespoons olive oil
• 400 grams button mushrooms, sliced 1cm thick
• sea salt and ground pepper
• 2 cloves garlic, crushed
• 60 grams butter, softened
• 2 tablespoons white miso
• 2 teaspoons sriracha hot sauce
• ¼ cup grated parmesan
• ½ cup cream
METHOD
Cook the pasta in a large pot of salted boiling water for 2 minutes less than the packet instructions.
Take out ½ cup of the cooking water and set aside. Drop in the spinach, give it a quick stir then drain the pasta and spinach. Toss with a little olive oil and cover to keep warm.
Heat half the oil in a large frying pan over a medium-high heat. Add half the mushrooms, season with salt and pepper then let them brown for a couple of minutes.
Stir and cook for another few minutes until lightly golden. Transfer to a plate and repeat with the remaining oil and mushrooms.
If you overcrowd the pan, the mushrooms will stew rather than brown. Add the first batch of mushrooms back to the pan and stir in the garlic.
Stir the butter, miso, sriracha and parmesan together in a bowl until smooth. Add to the mushrooms with the cream and bring to the boil.
Add the pasta and spinach, gently stir together and cook for 2 minutes, adding a splash of the reserved cooking water if needed so it forms a silky sauce that coats the pasta.
TO SERVE: Divide between two bowls and top with a grind of black pepper.
Tony Alexander: The golden rule when the world's on firenobody knows anything

How will the Iran crisis affect Kiwi interest rates, house prices and economic
As a columnist, it can be difficult to write something insightful during a crisis like the one playing out in the Middle East. Analysing past economic and housing market data is not that useful because any data we pull will be out of date and won't reflect the daily fluctuations in oil and energy prices.
That means it is dangerous to make any strong statements about what the economy is doing. Similarly, it is dangerous to try to say in any detail where we are headed because we have no idea how high oil prices will go, how long they will stay elevated, what impact they will have on world growth, how much inflation jumps, and the extent to which businesses raise prices to cover higher costs.
But it is equally useless to keep focusing on the uncertain factors in play because such things are already being deeply discussed in the media with no conclusions apparent.
Probably the best thing to do is keep an eye broadly on how our economy was tracking and where it was heading, and grasp any early indicators of changes in direction – but without blindly extrapolating numbers which might change by a lot.
It pays to remember that just as none of us had experience of what usually happens in a global pandemic back in early 2020, none of us has fully up-to-date experience of what happens when we have the biggest disruption to global oil supplies ever, according to the International Energy Agency.
The upturn in our economy expected for this year is probably still going to happen, but it will be weaker than projected.
growth?
Any upside surprises will have to wait until 2027. There will be good support for our growth from high farm incomes, the lowering of interest rates from 2024 highs, rising foreign student numbers, higher infrastructure spending, an upturn underway in house building, and slowly improving net migration flows.
But the pleasing growth in inward tourism, which was underway, is now likely to reverse slightly as people steer their holidays away from long-haul destinations.
For house prices, the previously predicted rise of 2% to 5% looks more likely to be zero for another year.
For house construction, there is a risk that some of the buildings already consented are put on hold because of newly soaring construction costs, especially in transport and plastics.
For borrowers, the track for interest rates was already upward from the lows seen late last year. Now there will be further rises, and those people who remained floating or on the one-year fixed rate will feel even more financial pain.
Hopefully, people are gaining some understanding of why I so strongly favour fixing 3-5 years when interest rates look like they are at or near their cyclical lows. We can never know how rapid the coming cyclical rise in interest rates will be. As things stand, bank fixed-rate lending margins are about 0.5% lower than average.
The slow rejuvenation of city CBDs will be put on hold for a while, as more people will choose and be encouraged to work from home. That means hard times continuing a little bit longer than expected for inner-city cafes and restaurants. But the improving trend is likely to return fairly quickly once things settle down.
5 dreamy features for your outdoor space
Written by Saskia Neacsu, Source: yourhomeandgarden.co.nz
Spend more time outdoors with these thoughtful design ideas.
A home with ample outdoor space is the quintessential Kiwi dream, whether you’re an entertainer, avid gardener, or live by the sea. Spending time in nature is one of the simplest ways to live well, and thoughtfully designed outside areas can enrich your daily routine and add value to your property.
From upgrading patio tiles to define zones and improve flow to installing an outdoor shower along a side passage, clever upgrades don’t require a large footprint. Beyond aesthetics, material durability is key, which is why ABI Interiors’ Sola range is designed with the elements in mind. The collection features weather-resistant fixtures and tapware in five finishes, including stainless steel, tumbled brass, and brushed gunmetal which will develop a natural patina over time and blend seamlessly into their earthy surroundings. ABI Interiors offers warranties of up to 25 years for added peace of mind.
Whether you’re seeking renovation inspiration or planning a new build, read on for 5 design ideas to encourage more time spent outdoors.
1. Install an outdoor shower
If you enjoy athletic pursuits like surfing, swimming, or biking, there’s nothing more refreshing than rinsing off sand, dirt and chlorine, or cooling down post-workout with an outdoor shower. An outdoor shower is also a practical way to clean your dog, wash your surfboard, or rinse gardening tools.
Depending on your installation options and space, ABI Interiors’ Sola Freestanding Outdoor Shower Set is an all-in-one solution for hot or cold showers with a luxurious rain shower head and versatile hand-held shower. For a wall-mounted setup, pair the Sola Shower Arm & Head Set with the Hand Shower Set and Minimal Mixer.
For luxurious, resort-like touches, add robe hooks and fragrant, moisture-loving plants that double as a privacy screen.
Tip: If space is limited, fit an outdoor shower into a small side passage.
What to consider when installing an outdoor shower
• Choose slip-resistant tiles or pavers for safety
• Consider whether an outdoor shower suits your climate
• Is the area sheltered from wind and private, or do you need an enclosure or screen?
• Drainage placement – can the wastewater seep directly into your garden, or do you need professional advice?
2. Design an outdoor bathroom or poolhouse
If you have space for a pool, consider taking an outdoor shower one step further and constructing an outdoor bathroom or pool house. Whether open-air or partially covered, incorporating ABI Interiors’ Sola range will ensure a functional, long-lasting washroom. The collection includes corrosion-resistant, stainless-steel tapware, sinks and showers. With intentional design, your bathroom will feel like an extension of its surroundings. If you’re tiling part or all of the walls or floors, the size and colour you choose will set the tone.
4. Lay outdoor tiling
It’s easy to overlook your flooring, but the right layout defines areas and provides indooroutdoor continuity. Large-format tiles, such as ABI’s Lucca Limestone Look Outdoor Tiles, create minimal grout lines, a cleaner appearance, and a sense of spaciousness. Their durable porcelain mimics a velvety limestone texture and provides slip resistance. Choose from two neutral colours, sand and light grey, for a natural, earthy finish.
Tip: Pair Lucca outdoor tiles with ABI’s Lucca Limestone Look Indoor Tiles for visual cohesion and indoor-outdoor flow.
A well-planned outdoor kitchen or BBQ area makes hosting easy, letting you meal-prep while entertaining guests. Consider your bench layout for easy prep and cleanup, and whether you need space for appliances like barbecues and pizza ovens or for integrations like a mini fridge.ABI Interiors’ small and single outdoor sinks are purpose-built for al fresco kitchens and are compatible with an optional colander insert for holding ice, defrosting food, or washing produce. Accessories like the Sola Kitchen Mixer and Cabinetry Knobs allow for visual cohesion. To ensure your outdoor kitchen adds value to your property, make sure it integrates seamlessly with your exterior, including your choice of cover, such as a pergola or other structure.
What to consider when selecting outdoor tiling
• Whether the tile finish complements your exterior facade and outdoor furniture
• Suitability for your local climate
• UV-resistant, slip-resistant and stain-resistant finishes
5. Mount outdoor signage
Add your street numbers or the name of your property to your boundary wall or entranceway for charm and character. ABI Interior’s range of minimal-style signage complements a variety of facades while honouring the history of your home or bach.
3. Build an outdoor kitchen
Fall for colour: Bringing the shades of autumn inside
Source: oneroof.co.nz, Sponsored by Resene
Swap textiles, lighting and accessories for a warmer, softer vibe.
Layers of sunset terracotta shades bring mellow autumnal cosiness.
Bright, breezy interiors feel perfect through summer, but as the air turns crisp there’s a natural pull toward rooms that feel warmer, softer and more enveloping.
That doesn’t mean you need to do a full seasonal makeover! The shades of autumn like burnished golds, spicy coppers and baked earth tones, make for a mutable colour palette that can easily be cosied up or cooled down depending on the mood, taste or temperature.
Simply dial the mood up or down by swapping textiles and textures, lighting and accessories, or even small areas of feature accent colours.
Building on a base
For Resene colour consultant Amy Watkins warm neutrals are a great foundation on which to build an autumnal colour palette.
“Neutrals like Resene Thorndon Cream, Quarter Fossil or Eighth Akaroa will instantly create a sense of comfort and warmth within your interiors,” Amy says. “Bring the space to life by pairing these softer tones with rich statement colours, either as a feature wall or in a statement room.”
Neutrals like these and other mid-toned shades are the quiet achievers of an autumnal colour palette.
Others to try are Triple Spanish White and Triple Pearl Lusta, as well as lighter variants like Spanish White, and Half Pearl Lusta, which help the colour “temperature” of rooms to shift effortlessly between cosy winter retreat and lighter summer haven.
Off-whites with gentle grey undertones, including Athens Grey, House White and Merino, provide a flexible backdrop for deeper seasonal accents like greige, charcoal or terracotta tones in Soiree or Amaranth. Metallic touches in copper or brass add a subtle glow reminiscent of autumn light.
If you prefer a lighter approach, warm whites with a hint of yellow, Resene Spanish White or Resene Solitaire, keep spaces bright while still feeling snug when layered with texture and pattern.
From there you can build a palette that suits your tastes and interpretation of autumn.
“Earthy shades such as Tuscany, Wild West or Hemlock will add depth and sophistication, creating a beautifully layered, autumninspired interior,” Amy says.
“Adding these autumnal colours into your interior palette is a good way to create a space that feels warm, inviting and comforting. These tones naturally reflect what we see outdoors during the cooler months, which helps interiors feel more connected to nature and more grounding.”
To give these natural and earthy tones extra lift, while keeping to an autumnal theme, Amy suggests pairing them with deep blue greens like Dark Slate or Jurassic, or dusty pinks such as Sakura or Wax Flower for a contemporary softness.
Literally leafy
For a clearer reference to autumn beyond simply colour, you could turn to the most obvious autumnal motif: falling or golden leaves.
Here, wallpaper can be your best friend. You could try the colourful but muted leaves of Resene Wallpaper Collection Perfect Harmony PH3011, or the more subtle and abstract leafy imagery of A67602.
Try these patterned papers - or even a simply autumn-hued design like Wallpaper Collection Perfect Harmony A64902 - as accent features in a living room, dining room or bedroom, perhaps as a feature wall, or a single drop behind a couch or showcase art piece, then find paints that match shades of the wallpaper, such as Pirate Gold or Half Forest Green, to use around your room.
If you love a more densely or intricately patterned autumnal design like Resene Wallpaper Collection Aquila ILA102, but are unsure how it will look in larger quantities, consider applying smaller sections of wallpaper to a stretched canvas or within picture frames.
Copper-toned layers of spiced colour make this autumnal sitting room glow with warmth.
This will give you autumnal accents, that you can match to those beige-toned or creamy neutrals like Desert Sand or Solitaire. They can also easily be moved around or switched out if you want more of a seasonal change in your room.
For those wanting to try their artistic skills, experiment with your own falling leaves mural, using freehand painting or stencils. Even two or three simple leaves falling down a wall can be an effective nod to an autumn vibe.
Top tip: Experiment with Resene FX Paint Effects Medium to give your leaves a naturalistic, distressed finish.
Try sponging shades like Haystack, Tarzan and Double Spanish White mixed with the medium. Test your ratios and technique on a spare piece of wood or plasterboard before committing to the wall.
Cocoon with colour
Autumnal decorating isn’t just about going darker. Creating a cocoon feeling can be more effective if you opt for soft, muted tones. Extending a gentle shade such as Resene Cashmere across walls and ceiling wraps the room in colour, changing how light moves through the space and creating an intimate, sheltered feel without heaviness.
Using flat or low-sheen finishes like Zylone Low Sheen or SpaceCote Flat can also help create the sense of being cosy and cocooned by softening light reflection and deepening colour. For the ultimate retreat, try colour drenching, which means painting walls, trim and even furniture in one enveloping hue. Spicy browns and wine tones such as Avant Garde, Dusty Road or Saratoga create intimate guest rooms, media spaces or reading nooks that feel made for cooler, cosier nights.
Chocolate-rich shades are another autumn hero and very much on-trend. Colours such as Dark Rum, Bokara Grey, Cioccolato or Milk Chocolate deliver drama with warmth, especially when paired with lighter companions like Sour Dough or Okey Dokey to stop the look feeling too heavy.
Sunset warmth
Natural wood finishes bring your autumnal look to life.
An autumnal colour scheme can just mean touches of the right warm shade against a warm neutral backdrop.
Few palettes capture the essence of autumn quite like terracotta, clay and peach. Shades such as Tuscany, Sunglo and Alert Tan evoke both sun-warmed landscapes and fallen leaves, bringing a grounded warmth that still feels connected to the outdoors.
These hues pair beautifully with nature-inspired greens, from earthy Quarter Karaka to the richness of Avocado or the deep blue-green of Tarawera to create spaces that feel restorative and seasonal without losing freshness.
Finish with texture
Colour doesn’t need to do all the work in an autumn palette. Texture adds the depth that makes autumn interiors feel inviting rather than heavy. Think timber battens, wool throws, linen upholstery, plaster finishes or tactile wallpapers such as Resene Wallpaper Collection Unify E300571 or E333207.
For a softer, weathered look, a colourwash or limewash effect created with FX Paint Effects Medium adds movement and a gently aged character, like walls that have mellowed over time.

FROSTING
• 150ml cream
• 150 grams dark chocolate (72% cocoa), chopped
METHOD
EQUIPMENT: Grease a 20cm springform cake tin and line the base and sides with baking paper.
Preheat the oven to 150°C fan bake.
Put the butter, cocoa, oil and the ginger beer in a medium-large pot over a medium heat. Bring to the boil, stirring constantly, then take off the heat. Add the sugar and chocolate and stir until smooth and the sugar has melted. Set aside to cool.
Whisk the egg and vanilla into the chocolate mixture until glossy and smooth. Whisk in the combined flour, baking powder and spices then whisk in the sour cream well, so there are no white streaks in the batter.
Pour the batter into the prepared tin and level the top. Put the marshmallows on top but don’t press them too far down into the batter. Bake for about 55 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out with only a few damp crumbs attached. Leave to cool in the tin.
FROSTING: Put the cream in a small pot and bring to just below the boil. Take off the heat and add the chocolate. Leave for 1 minute then whisk until smooth. Set aside until the frosting has cooled and thickened.
TO SERVE: Spoon the frosting onto the cake and swirl with the back of a spoon.

Ray White Now
Introducing Ray White Now, an insight to provide clarity to all our customers on what is happening in the market now.
If you are considering selling we explain how you can take advantage of the current conditions to achieve the best possible sales outcome.
Dear Property Owner, Ask economists how the housing market is performing, and you’ll hear words like “sideways” and “balanced”. Ask a sales agent at the coalface, and you’ll hear “engaged” and “quality demand.”
The gap between those perspectives is where real estate actually happens – not in spreadsheets and data analysis – but in lounge rooms, at open homes, and under the hammer.
If you wait for the official data to confirm a market turn, you are usually looking at yesterday’s market. Across our network, recent auctions have produced clearance rates exceeding 70 per cent – well ahead of the combined averages of the two
Sales for the first month of 2026 are up 11.40 per cent year-on-year, extending a run of consistent double-digit gains through the final quarter of 2025. This is not a sudden surge; it is sustained energy across buyer groups and price brackets. Pipeline signals are equally telling.
Listing authorities across our Ray White network – often the earliest indicator of future supply –softened late last year before flowing through to a lift in live listings. Now, that trend is reversing, with available stock beginning to tighten. At the same time, median days to sell have fallen back to long-term norms, and most resales are once again occurring at a profit.
When demand firms while supply contracts, competition intensifies.
The broader economic backdrop is improving, albeit unevenly.
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) has held the Official Cash Rate (OCR) unchanged at 2.25 per cent, inflation is tracking toward target, wholesale borrowing costs have eased, and pressure on mortgage rates has moderated. GDP has returned to growth, and despite elevated unemployment, economic conditions are expected to improve gradually.
Meanwhile, structural constraints – including infrastructure costs and development levies –continue to limit new housing supply in the areas people most want to live. In simple terms, demand is rebuilding faster than supply can respond. Against this backdrop of renewed confidence, we are proud to announce a partnership that reflects the scale of our ambitions and the communities we serve.
Ray White is now the Official New Zealand Real Estate Partner of New Zealand Rugby, supporting both the All Blacks and the Black Ferns. These teams embody excellence, performance, trust and national pride – values that resonate deeply across our network.
Where on the field or in the marketplace, success comes from preparation, teamwork and the courage to act when the opportunity presents itself. From what we are seeing across the country, that opportunity is no longer theoretical – it’s now in play.
Fittingly, this 88th edition of Ray White Now – a number traditionally linked with prosperity and positive momentum – arrived at a moment when the market itself appears to be turning a more confident corner.
