Welcome to the Spring edition of our community magazine— our 15th issue—and what a pleasure it is to share it with you. As days grow longer and flowers bloom, spring reminds us that fresh starts and new opportunities are always possible. It’s a season of connection, renewal, and hope for us all.
This 48-page edition is filled with inspiration, information, and opportunities to help you stay connected, active, and supported locally. Whether you want to try something new, reconnect with others, or explore what’s happening nearby, we hope this magazine becomes your guide.
Inside, you’ll find extensive “What’s On” listings, including welcoming craft groups, creative sessions, and sports and leisure activities for all abilities. We’ve also highlighted essential carer support services, recognising the vital role carers play and ensuring they can access help, understanding, and community.
This spring, we feature Dementia Action Week, with thanks to Nadine Hiscock of Alzheimer’s Society for her contribution. We also explore the Power of Music and how it can uplift mood, unlock memories, and bring people together through shared experiences.
Our Keep Moving section encourages gentle activity and reminds us that staying active, in whatever way suits you, can benefit both physical and emotional wellbeing while building confidence and independence for everyone over time.
I continue to be inspired by the kindness and dedication across our community. Every group, volunteer, and participant helps create a welcoming and supportive place to belong.
Thank you to everyone who contributes and takes part. This magazine exists for you—to inform, support, and celebrate our shared community now and always.
Warm regards,
From the steering committee/publication partners

Wimborne Area NeighbourCar (WAN) is a volunteer transport service coordinated by PramaLife for people living in and around the Wimborne area aged 50+
It is provided by a team of local volunteer drivers, who use their own cars to enable members of the local community who do not have access to transport to get to and from medical and other essential appointments, as well as social activities. This is a vital and affordable service (There is a yearly fee, and donations are given for each trip) which enables older adults within the local community to continue to live full lives independently. Our multi-award-winning service is unique in as far as our lovely drivers will pick up passengers, including walking aids, help them into the cars and then transport them to a variety of appointments. Our drivers will wait for the passengers at the appointment venue and will then transport them,

their walking aids and bags safely home again. We are looking for new volunteer drivers who would like to join our service and help older adults remain independent. If this is you, please contact Connie on: 07912 273722 or email us at: wan.pramalife@gmail.com
PramaLife has developed and created over 70 clubs, groups and activities for adults and carers within the Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole and East Dorset areas. These groups aim to directly tackle social isolation, increase personal independence, and help people enjoy life as they age. www.prama.org.uk/pramalife/

Eligibility: Anyone who is without transport. Cost: Donation. Tel: 07835 809814
Days of operation: Anytime if a driver is available.

This community magazine was originally founded to raise awareness for those living with or caring for someone living with Dementia. This edition spans from March through to July including Dementia Action Week, so we have welcomed input this year from Nadine Hiscock - Time for Dementia Officer –Dorset Alzheimer’s Society.
Here in Dorset, our closeknit communities play a huge part in supporting people affected by dementia. Alzheimer’s Society — the UK’s leading dementia charity — offers trusted support, advice and hope to families, while funding vital research and campaigning for better understanding across the country.
Dementia Action Week is a brilliant chance each year to get talking, learn more, and encourage anyone with concerns about memory or behaviour changes to seek an early diagnosis. Early diagnosis really matters, helping people access the right care, treatment and support sooner rather than later. It’s all about making places like Dorset kinder and more dementia friendly, so no one feels they’re going through it alone — because it takes a society to beat dementia.
We’re also proud that many Dorset families take part in the heartwarming Time for Dementia programme. By welcoming healthcare students into their homes, they help future doctors, nurses and therapists understand what everyday life with dementia is really like. Since 2014, the programme has helped thousands of students develop deeper understanding and insight of dementia and its impact on everyone.
If you’d like to learn more, get support, or find ways to get involved locally, visit www.alzheimers.org.uk.
Written by Nadine Hiscock – Alzheimer’s Society
Please visit the Dementia Awareness/Services section and One-Off Events section of our What’s On guide in this edition. Signposting events and activities are happening across Corfe Mullen, Ferndown, West Moors and Wimborne so do take a look.
Can you also spot the knitted Post Box covers in any of these towns? Ferndown Dementia Friendly Town committee are challenging local businesses to get involved and decorate their windows throughout Dementia Action Week. Keep your eyes peeled.

A new art exhibition at The Lighthouse Arts Centre in Poole features photography, collage and painting on the themes of sustaining creativity and self-expression into later life and the experience of families in caring roles. The Art of Keeping Well represents collaboration between artists, Bournemouth University, In Jolly Good Company, Prama Life and Help & Care with support from Dorset Council.
One element is Beyond the Lines, a series of striking black-and-white photographic portraits of people who have some form of dementia, taken by other people with similar conditions, using a professional camera and a portable studio kit, with the help and guidance of professional photographers Maxine Gonzalez–Bridger and Brent Jones. This art project by In Jolly Good Company, which highlights the creativity of the guests who attend their sessions, is enhanced by audio clips of the subjects of the portraits, available by using a phone QR code reader. After 25th March the photographs move to local hospitals, beginning in Dorchester, as part of the Arts in Hospital project.
If you know of a space in the community where the portraits could be displayed, or wish to know more about what is offered by In Jolly Good Company, find out more at https://www.injollygoodcompany. com/beyond-the-lines-photography-project and see ‘What’s On’.
Another part of the exhibition is a series of collage postcards created by carers, with the help of artist Casey Brett, as part of a Bournemouth University research project ‘Waiting Well’, which explores the experience of people who have symptoms of dementia but are awaiting a diagnosis. This can be a difficult time for families who find a loved one needs more support but are unsure of what to do or how to find help. The research was grounded in carer experience and the postcard-making gave them a way of expressing their feelings creatively.
Bournemouth University’s ‘Centre for Seldom Heard Voices’, HEMS, ran the research project. Dr Natalie Djohari, from BU said: “The Alzheimer’s Society estimates that 1 in 3 people living with dementia do not have a diagnosis. The research

findings from our ‘Waiting Well’ project found this was often due to denial, not recognising early symptoms, difficulty seeking help, or long delays waiting for a diagnosis.’ For further information about ‘Waiting Well’ contact ndjohari@bournemouth.ac.uk .
Bournemouth University has also collaborated with local artist Adilson Naueji, who has painted a moving portrait of a cared-for person in bed and a family carer leaning over to assist. Entitled ‘Stay’, it depicts not only the relationship between the two figures but also the paraphernalia of caring for a loved one in the home, down to the information sheets taped to the bedroom wall. Adilson, originally from Angola, has made his home in Bournemouth and loves creating candid portraits of local people. His exhibition ‘BH5 Boscombe Beyond Your Eyes’ was also presented at the Lighthouse in 2025. He says of the project:
‘This project proved to be the most challenging artistic endeavour I [have] undertaken to date, from comprehending the study’s nuances to sourcing authentic lived experiences of individuals in this situation. … Immersing oneself in the world of carers inevitably leaves a lasting impact. I am honoured to visually represent the research … in this field, and I sincerely hope the artwork effectively fulfils its intended purpose: to raise awareness about carers and to stimulate conversations at various societal levels.’
The exhibition will run until 25th March 2026. It can be found on the top floor and mezzanine staircase. There is access by lift.

Cardiac charity supporting Dorset families
Heartbeat is best known for Heartbeat House – a ‘home from home’ accommodation based just a stone’s throw from Southampton University Hospital where cardiac patients’ families can be close by during treatment. It’s no secret that the emotional impact of living with a heart problem is huge, so the importance of your friends and family being there during this time for support and love is massive. It is not uncommon for people to suffer from sudden cardiac complications when very far from home, making support from friends and family difficult and sometimes impossible.
Heartbeat House has 24 bedrooms, 11 twins and 13 single. The communal areas are comfortable, there

is a lounge, a large kitchen and a separate laundry room. Guests can relax, watch television and give each other mutual support, talk with other people in similar situations and not feel alone, all whilst being a 3 minute walk from the cardiac wards.
40% of the house’s residents come from Dorset with the hospital providing specialist cardiac care to the entirety of the south.
Heartbeat also fund ground-breaking research and pioneering projects to improve advancements in heart health.

We define music as a melodic or rhythmic sound combined to produce something pleasing to the listener and for many of us, music has an important role to play in our lives.
We become aware of sound from the moment we are present in the womb, a mother’s breathing, the inner body working and the natural pulse of the heartbeat. These sounds provide comfort and reassurance in this secure inner environment.
And we continue to use musical sounds from birth, to settle and reassure an infant with a gentle lullaby but also as a way of interacting before speech develops. A mother and child will engage in a musical dialogue of vocal sounds as they copy and answer each other in a wordless conversation.
For those of us who can hear, we are influenced by all the music and sounds around us, initially our parents’ songs and music and music and songs that are exposed to through television, radio, school, clubs and church. We then develop our own personalities that enable us to make our own musical choices, and our exposure extends to gigs, theatre, concerts, media, social media and being actively involved in music making ourselves.
In this way we grow more aware and appreciate music over many years without really having to try, which means it has become a familiar noise or soundtrack to our day. We begin to establish preferences over a period of time, and these become our favourite genres and songs.
Most importantly these preferences are preserved throughout the process of dementia. And music is so accessible for people living with dementia, because it is non-verbal and the experience can be appreciated and shared in a passive way or an interactive participatory way.
Music is good for us because it is a complex skill that requires the engagement of multiple areas of the brain. Sounds waves enter the ear as vibrations and these are converted into electrical signals that travel to the auditory cortex in the cerebral cortex and here we are able to recognize the sound as music. Music and song are stored here in the cerebellum in our semantic or long-term memory. This is where we store and retrieve instinctively our alphabet, how to ride a bike and the words of a song.
Music engages a widespread network of mechanisms in our brains that help us to recognize
and distinguish pitch, rhythm and so on. This skill is learned more through enculturation over many years rather than formal training so we know elements and can recall them with ease.
The Auditory Cortex around the ear processes the pitch and melody of music.
The Cerebellum at the back of our heads processes rhythm, stimulating movement.
The Limbic system in the centre where our amygdala and hippocampus are found affects our emotional response that can trigger both joy and sorrow. Dopamine, our feel good hormone, is released here which our reward.
Both actively participating in music or listening passively requires focused attention, divided attention, alternating attention so as a cognitive exercise it is very efficient.
The appeal of the music can be down to several things. It might be simply that the characteristic of music stimulates an instinctive or spontaneous

subconscious physical response such as tapping a foot or hand on a table. The way that music can encourage movement is a physical benefit.
It might be that music is a landmark of the memory of an event or something with a personal association which is important, that triggers the happy or even sad memory of an occasion or time. In this way, for a person with dementia familiar music can be a landmark to a life story event that will awaken a memory and trigger a response, and it maintains the links between music, the person’s identity and their life events.
When we are at our most vulnerable or supporting someone at the later stages of their life, it is possible that playing familiar music may offer reassurance and comfort. It creates secure or familiar environment and personal preferences may further enhance this experience, increasing this reassurance as the positive emotions associated with the music are released.

Social prescribing, also sometimes known as community referral, is a means of enabling health professionals to refer to a range of local, non-clinical services. The referrals generally, but not exclusively, come from professionals working in primary care settings, for example, GPs or practice nurses.

Welcome to the corner aimed at you, the carers. We’re focusing on creativity in this issue. A handicraft can be a great soother. Now Spring is here, the longer hours of daylight make knitting, crochet, sewing, felting and other textile crafts easier – as can a ‘daylight’ light-bulb, of course. The Olympic diver, Tom Daly, amongst other celebrities, has made knitting more accessible recently, so sort out those needles and try something small, if you’re out of practice. Local charities often welcome woolly hats and scarves. ‘Knit and Natter’ groups often have someone willing to teach the skills. Drawing and painting also benefit from stronger daylight. Don’t say, ‘I can’t draw’! Everyone can pick up a pencil, biro or stick of charcoal. Start with
tracing, if you really have no confidence, even the ‘Old Masters’ did that. Then your eyes and hands will adjust to looking from subject to page and you’ll soon be able to make marks yourself. Colouring in ready-drawn pictures has become popular as a way of relaxing and becoming absorbed in an activity, being ‘mindful’ and setting anxieties aside for a while. Use good quality colouring pencils for pleasing results. Watercolour pencils can be wetted with a small paintbrush to make the colours come alive. Look out for local groups to find like-minded people. Art4dementia has sessions in West Moors on Wednesdays 15th April, 20th May, 17th June and 15th July at The Guide Hall, Ashurst Road from 2.00pm4.00pm. See ‘What’s On’.

Exercise/Music therapy for the more matureSenior Springtime
Many aspects about getting older involve loss, but the good news is that there are some activities that can mitigate against them. We all know that exercise has many benefits for everyone, whatever age, but keeping active as we get older is really important to enable a healthy and long old age. The six components of health are:
Physical health - functioning of the body
Mental health - thinking and reasoning processes
Emotional health - recognizing and expressing emotions such as fear, happiness as well as coping with depression and anxiety
Social health - making and maintaining relationships
Spiritual health – concerns religious beliefs, peace of mind and peace with self
Environmental health - eg.quality of physical surroundings.
I would like to put forward that exercising together in a group can address most of these.
interaction and learning new skills can only be beneficial. Even those with Dementia, at least in the early stages, can take part meaningfully and enjoy the experience of feeling part of something, demonstrated in the group activities that I run.

Often ageing can sadly bring with it metabolic and inflammatory disorders such as arthritis and loss of muscle tissue, which in turn can lead to stiffness of joints, poor balance and falls, not to mention loss of confidence and self esteem. These problems mean the loss of functional strength and the ability to carry out everyday tasks.
Regular exercise has been proven to improve these situations as well as helping with cardiovascular health, maintaining a healthy weight and preventing frailty in the older person.
Specific exercises can help with muscle strength and endurance such as using weights and resistance bands. This in turn, together with cardiovascular work can at least maintain stamina, motor control and flexibility and improve balance and co-ordinaton. The very act of meeting together to exercise also means that friendships and enjoyment become part of the process, building self esteem and confidence. Cognitive abilities are improved through the social
Staying active later in life preserves independence, sharpens the mind, and strengthens the body. Regular movement improves balance, reduces disease risk, and boosts mood and confidence. It also encourages social connection and purpose. Even gentle activities like walking or stretching can add years to life—and life to those years today.
As we age it is important to still keep moving and do what we can within our capabilities and to avoid stopping / slowing down.
Please visit our Sports & Leisure section to see what’s on in your local area. This includes activities from Hannah at Dorset FIT offering a safe and friendly environment for women to exercise in whatever way suits them. Dementia is a disease that can affect anyone at any time, young and old.
The very minimum requirement of the Ferndown Dementia Friendly Town Steering group, is to understand what it is like to live with dementia not only for those diagnosed, but for their carers too, and to try and help make life a little easier, or the services available more accessible.
It is essential to find out more from those with dementia, and their families and carers, about the experiences of living in our community, where they feel supported and where improvements can be made. This feedback can and will direct the actions of the steering group. Please feel free to email me on michaeldeane1@hotmail.com with any comments, concerns or questions you may have.
I am delighted to advise and incredibly grateful that the staff and residents at Fernhill Care Home chose FDFT as their Charity of the Year for 2025. They recently presented us with a cheque for an amazing £1,313.15 and we are truly thankful for all of their effort.

Wimborne once again showed its credentials as a dementia-friendly town last autumn with a day devoted to Carers’ Rights on 19th November. The Allendale Centre Minster Hall housed numerous stalls offering information about many aspects of the role of carer, from financial and legal support, to fun activities where people with dementia and their carers or family members can join in, to having extra help in the home or in a residential setting. Many of those at the Allendale that day are represented in the pages of this magazine, so have a look at our advertisers and the ‘What’s On’ section for more detail. Members of WDFC were there, offering information booklets
and talking to people who are supporting a spouse or family member at home, offering signposts to available services. There were also displays of the ‘Beyond the Lines’ photographs and Adilson Naueji’s portrait ‘Stay’ (see separate article).
The Allendale Centre also houses the Magic Table, a projection surface which offers colourful images which can be personalised. Images are interactive, so the surface can respond to touch in various ways. Ask in the Allendale Centre for more information and to book a visit. See ‘What’s On’ for contact details.
