Hello and a very warm welcome to the April edition of Dorset Business Focus and I hope you are well. We are all horrified at the situation in Ukraine and are witnessing the largest displacement of people in Europe since World War 2. We’ve seen incredible acts of bravery and kindness and here in the UK it’s clear that businesses are stepping up to the plate and providing support in many ways. To help raise funds, I’d like to let you know about an online auction Dorset Chamber will be holding this month to raise funds with 100% going to the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal by the Disaster Emergency Committee. We’d like to try and raise £10,000. The Disaster Emergency Committee is a partnership of 15 charities with great experience humanitarian aid and specialists in different areas of disaster response. The Government will also provide a percentage of match funding against funds raised by the DEC. We had the idea to do this in March and began to ask businesses to donate items or services that we could then auction on
our website, with 100% of the proceeds going to charity. The response has been fantastic and we already have long list of items that individuals and businesses will be able to bid for online. Our thanks to all the businesses that have donated to date. To bid, you simply go to the auction on the Dorset Chamber website, and you’ll be able to see all the items listed and you’ll be able to make an online bid. You’ll see the actual cost of the item as well as the highest bid to date. The item will go to the highest bidder when the auction closes. We will also be listing all the businesses and individuals who have kindly donated items to the auction as well. You’ll see this auction begin very shortly and please do support by bidding, your contribution will really help. In addition, if you’d like to donate to our fund, please don’t hesitate to contact me, we’d love to hear from you. This month in the magazine you’ll also see
we are launching our manifesto for our new year from 1st April. The manifesto clearly sets out our aims and aspirations for the next 12 months and I’m very much looking forward to what promises to be an exciting year as we continue to move forward with the support we offer. Stress Awareness Month has been held every April, since 1992 to increase public awareness about the causes of the modern stress epidemic and how best to manage it. ONS figures released in March 2022 have shown that stress levels have reached epidemic proportions, the pandemic, spiralling prices, and the conflict in the Ukraine are all conspiring to impact this and waiting lists to seek professional help are at an all-time high.
Finding ways to manage stress is becoming ever more important so we thought we would share what the Dorset Chamber team do to help them de-stress.

I try to begin every day with a walk before and after work with my dog Roman and I’m lucky enough to live near open heathland and parkland. I set the alarm and head out, complete with headphones and I find this gives me valuable thinking time. I really feel e-mail and apps such as WhatsApp are becoming incredibly demanding in our lives and removing our time to think, plan and reflect and I really try to claim some of that time back.

My way of de-stressing has always been to head to the beach, and I am so lucky to have our beautiful Bournemouth Bay beaches just on my doorstep. I make my beach walk part of my daily routine, and I find being by the sea provides me with the calming influence I often crave for during my working week. Just taking the time out to create some headspace and breathe in some fresh sea air, whatever the weather, is just the tonic, and I would highly recommend it.

I find meeting up with friends is a great way of de-stressing. Having a relaxed lunch in the company of friends is the perfect time to download worries, share problems and of course laugh lots which is a great tonic.

One of the things I enjoy doing to combat stress is yoga, and I absolutely love it when we do yoga outside, weather permitting, with Park Yoga at Upton House. It’s a great way to start a Sunday morning and everyone is welcome irrespective of ability or age. There is a great atmosphere and its lovely to leave there feeling chilled and refreshed, ready for a new week.

I have two young children, so I find life easier when in a routine. I have discovered over the past year how much I enjoy pottering around my garden, in which I am very lucky to have a large garden to keep me very busy! Exercise is obviously important, not only for your body, but to clear your mind. I play netball on a weekly basis and feel so revived after.
My top way of de-stressing is to get out in nature and exercise. Last year I broke my ankle and to help my rehabilitation I bought an e-bike. My idea of heaven is cycling around the gravel paths in the New Forest. Roll on summer weather.

My favourite way to de-stress is taking my son Harry to the swings at the park. It’s his favourite thing to do so always makes him giggle! We walk there and back which is great for fresh air and getting my steps in too. Of course, a glass of wine once he’s in bed does wonders for de-stressing sometimes too!

I take myself away to my happy places which is either watching my upbeat tv sitcom Benidorm which really lifts my spirits. I love spending time with my grandchildren as they always lift me up. I enjoy taking myself off to a beach location, sitting, have a coffee the take a long walk to just blow the cobwebs away. Talking helps and writing down all the positives in my life because there is always someone far worse off.

I take my dog Cookie on a daily walk, and we like to alternate between Sandbanks Beach, Branksome Beach and Whiteciffe Park. Most weekends I go walking and enjoy the Purbecks and I also love swimming, particularly in the outdoor pool at my gym.
Mainly walking, skateboarding, nature, drawing, hobbies, eco work, being creative, switching off from work. My ultimate de-stressing technique is to sit down and reflect on the reality that I have been given the opportuinity to exist in this universe, the opportunity to taste, smell, think, create and feel emotion, there is no better experience that success or money could possibly purchase. What is important is that you enjoy it and keep it simple. I also love being on the coast and do lots of beach cleaning as it is good for mental and physical well-being. Also... Watch comedy and write grattitude lists (that is a biggie)!

Over the last couple of years I have found getting out into nature has been the best stress relief. I’ve become a keen walker and love getting out of the urban conurbations and into peaceful countryside. It really helps me to clear my thoughts. The fresh air is rejuvenating, and I find it makes me feel a lot better both physically and mentally.

OnBuy ranks in the FT1000 Europe’s Fastest Growing Companies 2022 E-commerce marketplace OnBuy has made the Financial Times 1000, a list of Europe’s fastest-growing companies that ranks businesses by revenue growth. Recording a 479% increase in revenue growth between 2017 and 2020 secured OnBuy’s 331 spot. Being listed in this high-profile ranking top off an incredibly successful 2021 for Bournemouth-based OnBuy, seeing product listings hit over 36 million. Caterpillar Marine Power UK Ltd Announces Tony Suttle as Facility Manager Tony Suttle has been promoted to the role of facility manager at Caterpillar Marine Power UK Ltd in Wimborne, Dorset with immediate effect. Tony has been employed at the Wimborne site since 1985 establishing an in-depth knowledge of the products and the operations in their entirety. Despite the recent global challenges, over the last year the company launched the new Cat® C4.4 electronic genset and electronic auxiliary engine. The new Cat C7.1 auxiliary was launched in January. “These new additions to our product portfolio will enable us to continue to offer competitive solutions to our customers’ requirements” observes Tony. Finding our purpose and life’s work Sometimes it takes a big part of our lifetime to discover our purpose and life’s work, even though we may have been doing it our whole career without necessarily realising it. Our life’s work is not always what we do to make money, although we often think it should be. The way we discover our purpose and life’s work is by how we feel when we are doing it. When we are doing our life’s work, we feel a strong sense of belonging. This doesn’t mean that the work is always easy and is the only work we must do; it just means that there is a feeling that we are on the right track. When we are engaged in our life’s work, we feel more alive, because our energy is devoted to a cause that, in turn, stimulates us. This may be tiring, but we are almost never depleted. We feel connected with the world, knowing that we have something important to offer. I know that I feel most alive and energised when I am working on projects that are about improving a place or community through regeneration, creativity, and culture. Most of us remember a time when we felt fully engaged in some act of work or creativity, and it is here that we may rediscover the work we are meant to do. On the other hand, it may be time to find out what really inspires us by getting involved in a project or just doing whatever it is we have always wanted to try. We all have callings, and when we find them, we owe it to ourselves to explore them, because while they may not be our livelihood, they are the keys to a happy life. 11

AFC Bournemouth and REIDsteel partner to give local youngsters chance to get active through football The AFC Bournemouth Community Sports Trust joined forces with REIDsteel to deliver its popular Premier League Kicks initiative. Through the programme, the Trust offers free football sessions to young people in some of Bournemouth’s most underprivileged areas. The sessions run five nights a week at various locations in Bournemouth, harnessing the power of football to improve people’s physical and mental wellbeing. John Reid & Sons (Strucsteel) Limited – which REIDsteel is the trading name for – is a Dorset-based structural steel engineering company which has been designing, manufacturing and erecting steel structures worldwide for over 100 years. Open to boys and girls aged 8-19, Premier League Kicks has already helped 1,000 young
people enjoy getting active in a safe environment where they can have fun with friends. As part of the programme, there are also regular workshops available for participants at Vitality Stadium, focusing on internet safety, mental health, and combatting racism. The partnership with REIDsteel will see their employees volunteer at the sessions and will work with AFC Bournemouth player ambassadors, Chris Mepham and Abby Jones to deliver special experiences for the participants. Shoulder surfing:
Watch out for eagle‑eyed snoopers peeking at your phone Some fraudsters may use low-tech tactics to steal your sensitive information – peering over your shoulder as you enter that data is one of them We live in an age of pervasive connectivity. But our always-on, mobile-centric lives also expose us to risk. For many people, it is the prospect of phishing, remotely deployed malware, and other online risks that pose the greatest threat to their personal and professional data. Sometimes the old ways like shoulder surfing or even dumpster diving offer the best ROI, and there are plenty of opportunistic fraudsters about to give it a go. Shoulder surfing has been around far longer than smartphones and highly portable laptops. Just ask anyone who has had their credit card PIN or their phonecard digits stolen by unscrupulous passers-by. But today there are far more opportunities to cash in. Our hurried, multi-device lifestyles are a magnet for shoulder surfers. A few small behavioural changes could be enough to keep you safe. A cautionary tale (or two) Most of us dismiss shoulder surfing. We think we’d be able to spot someone lurking behind us with their eyes glued to our screen. But the bad guys only need to get lucky once. And we give them plenty of opportunities through the working day, especially now that society is opening up again. ESET’s Jake Moore recently revealed two occasions where he managed to obtain the login details of friends’ online accounts, with their prior agreement. His research highlights well just how exposed many of us are to savvy attackers, especially in informal settings like bars, cafes and restaurants. 1. Snapchat surfing In his first experiment, Jake bet a friend he could hijack her Snapchat account, even one protected by two-factor authentication. Using the password reset function, he entered her phone number and selected the option to be messaged a confirmation code. By simply shoulder surfing the confirmation message when it popped up on her homescreen, he was able to take complete control of the account. Even a second SMS code sent as confirmation was ignored by the account holder but observed and entered by Jake. Now, an attacker might not normally know their victim’s phone number, but they may be able to find it online from previously breached data troves or leveraging open-source intelligence, including on social media. By calling up the user and pretending to be an employee at said social media company, an attacker could theoretically trick the user into handing over their SMS code. Of course, that’s not strictly speaking shoulder surfing. But imagine an office or education setting where colleagues or kids may be in the proximity of users whose phone numbers they do know. That makes the “password-reset shoulder surf” a more genuine risk. more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news
2. PayPal problems In a similar second experiment, Jake bet a friend he could hijack one of his online accounts. This time he went to the PayPal login page to request a password reset. Knowing the user’s email, he typed this in and selected the security check option of an SMS code sent to his phone. In a similar way to the above example, Jake was able to covertly snoop on his mate’s device as the code flashed up. Thus, he had entry to the friend’s entire PayPal account. Once again, an attacker here needs to get hold of a victim’s email, be it by shoulder surfing them, by finding a previously breached one on a dark web site, or through other means. Then they would need to get in close proximity to the user to spot that confirmation code as it flashed up. Again, an office or school would be the perfect place. However, if a shoulder surfer had their eyes on a target working in a public place for long enough, the chances are they would spot their email address eventually. What could shoulder surfing mean for you? The argument here is that the security bar is in many cases still too easy for malicious actors to jump – especially if they have eyes on your laptop or device. Too many of us allow notifications to flash up on our screens. We might have grown so desensitized that we ignore them. But those looking over our shoulder don’t. It’s particularly pertinent that the victim in the PayPal example above was a cybersecurity veteran of 20-plus years. If he can get scammed like this, many others could, and once a bad actor has access to your account they could: • Change the logins and then extort the victims so that the latter can regain access • Use brute force techniques to try the same email/logins for access to other accounts • Steal your personal information for use in identity fraud attempts or follow-on phishing • Access and divert funds to their own accounts • Troll and bully victims by posting inappropriate content from their accounts
What can you do to prevent shoulder surfing? The impact of such an account hijack can last many months. If bad actors have managed to steal funds and personal info, you may suffer a barrage of phishing attempts over the succeeding months. Recovering lost funds and resetting credit scores can take even longer. With that, here are a few mitigation strategies: Never reuse passwords across accounts, and use a password manager to store unique, strong credentials. Switch on multifactor authentication (MFA). But choose an authentication app (e.g., Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator) rather than an SMS code option. Always be alert when logging-in to your accounts in public. That could mean stop working altogether in crowded airplanes, trains, airports, hotel lobbies and the like. Or at least, work with your back to a wall. Greendale Construction achieve ‘excellent rating’ from BREEAM for Studland House, Bournemouth University Chartered Builders, Greendale Construction Limited, has achieved a BREEAM rating of excellent for its work at Studland House, Bournemouth University. BREEAM (Building Research Establishment’s Environmental Assessment Method) is the world’s leading sustainability assessment method for master-planning projects, infrastructure, and buildings. It recognises and reflects the value in higher performing assets across the built environment lifecycle, from new construction to in-use and refurbishment. The 25 week works on phase 2, and 28 weeks on phase 3 of Studland House, carried out by Greendale during the £2.1 million contract for Bournemouth University, involved the complete refurbishment of floors one, three and four, plus the local refurbishment of the toilet areas on the ground floor. The new space on the ground floor now provides additional active travel facilities along with new accessible, gender-neutral toilets. The upper floors also benefited from toilet refurbishments on each floor in the core areas, larger open plan office arrangements with separate meeting rooms, and break-out spaces, store-rooms and kitchenettes. The same theme across all the floors were maintained, but layouts were tailored to the individual department needs. Chris Cave, Commercial Director, Greendale Construction Ltd, commented: “BREEAM completes its assessment through third party certification of an asset’s environmental, social and economic sustainability performance, using standards developed by BRE (Building Research Establishment). This means BREEAM rated developments are likely to be more sustainable environments that enhance the well-being of the people who live and work in them, help protect natural resources and make for more attractive property investments. Greendale was fortunate to have the assistance of assessors, Adam Watkins & Laura Tenor of Sustainable Construction Services, to help advise, and meet all the requirements on this project in order to achieve the BREEAM excellent rating, which included:

Registering the site with the Considerate Contractors Scheme and scoring 35 points on the review. Recording energy & water usage. Recording transport for all delivery and collections. Energy monitoring to be fitted to allow post-construction monitoring of all energy use for the building. Reduction in flush volumes and flow restrictors of sanitaryware installed. All insulation installed to be Green Guide A+ rated. Provide early stage waste reduction. Site Waste Management Plan undertaken and tracked through construction period.

Dorset’s One Health 2022 conference showcases Agritech Innovation Hosted by Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and Kingston Maurward College near Dorchester, One Health 2022 brought more than 60 senior decision makers from academia, industry, and government together for a day of advice, knowledge sharing and planning. One Health is a globally recognised term that describes the interdependence between the health of humans, animals, plants and natural ecosystems and this formed the basis for the days agenda which explored how this can inform innovation in the rapidly growing field of agricultural technology, or agritech. The conference saw the launch of a oneyear programme, the One Health Nucleus Pilot, designed to offer a formal structure of wraparound support for businesses already in or seeking to develop projects and ideas related to the One Health agenda. Next steps in the development of agritech across the South West also formed part of discussions, including how businesses involved in activities such as aquaculture, food technology and clean growth can leverage export opportunities opened up by emerging free trade agreements with markets worldwide. Dorset LEP is a member of a steering group, South West AgriTech, which seeks to champion business support and opportunities. The group has recently published analysis putting the current number of agritech jobs in Dorset at around 700 and the sector’s economic value at £108 million. Opening the conference, Dorset LEP’s Chair Cecilia Bufton said One Health was an integral part of Dorset’s economic and public health strategies, adding: “We have an ambition to
make Dorset a One Health nucleus, within a sustainable, commercial One Health regional powerhouse, contributing to a green, clean global UK offer.” Cecilia then introduced Kingston Maurward’s Chief Executive and Principal Luke Rake, the One Health lead on Dorset LEP’s Board. He explained how recent investments in College facilities and assets will increasingly support essential agritech skills regionally and nationally. Likening Dorset to a ‘living laboratory’ for One Health and agritech, Luke highlighted the development of the on-campus university centre and rural business hub with plans to incubate and accelerate a pipeline of 40 high-worth, clean-growth rural businesses by 2030. As well as Kingston Maurward, investment projects supported by Dorset LEP at the Dorset Innovation Park at Winfrith Newburgh were also praised for boosting the agritech sector. Among the businesses presenting at the conference was draperGROUP, which is headquartered on the Park and provides sustainable temperature control systems for livestock production. Founder and Director Paul Draper outlined how the company has grown since 2008 when it installed the UK’s first hot water heating system for livestock using a hybrid biomass and LPG boiler solution. Now, around 500 poultry sheds nationally rely on draperGROUP renewable heating systems and equipment, saving more than 300 million kilowatt hours of fossil fuel usage, or 65,000 tonnes of carbon, every year. Global efforts to ensure the deforestationfree sourcing of supermarket products made with palm oil and soya were highlighted by
Lucy Cullinane, Operations Director of Efeca. Operating from Bournemouth and Dorchester, Efeca provides advice and support on sustainable sourcing of natural resources to businesses, governments and NGOs. Further conference presentations included updates on how agritech innovation is supporting regenerative farming, crop health and protection, pollination, the collation of data metrics on yields, the deployment of technology in precision agricultural engineering, the formulation of animal feeds and supplements and the quality monitoring of milk and other dairy products. Adam Smith, Managing Director of special R&D company Intrepid Minds, another business operating from the Dorset Innovation Park, discussed their latest 5G enabled automated tractor technology while Professor Mathew Upton of the University of Plymouth outlined recent advances in how vaccines can address antimicrobial resistance to improve agricultural production. Delegates also heard how the agricultural sector will increasingly benefit from the rollout of 5G broadband across rural Dorset. Keynote speakers, both strongly encouraging the growth of the agritech sector, were Professor Guy Poppy CB from the University of Southampton and Professor Mick Fuller from the University of Plymouth. The conference was the fourth such annual event hosted on the theme of One Health by Dorset LEP. The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 which invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”. Welcome to the 2022-2023 Dorset Chamber Manifesto. This sets out our ambitions from 1st April 2022 to 31st March 2023 as the Chamber of Commerce for Dorset, accredited by the British Chambers of Commerce. We look forward with optimism and renewed energy as we continue to do our best for our members and the wider Dorset business community. The last two years have thrown unimaginable challenges at business, but I hope now is a time when we can all rebuild and press on. The last 12 months have seen Dorset Chamber take an unprecedented focus on the importance of health and wellbeing, supporting the resilience of our greatest asset, our teams. We have tackled some key issues that are still very much considered taboo such as the impact of the menopause on women at work and mental health of our teams and importantly, our business leaders through our Got Your 6 (GU6) project. We’ve also done our best to help businesses as we emerge from the pandemic. This year will see that focus develop as well as embracing ESG (environmental, social and governance) and providing a programme to help embed this within Dorset businesses. This will include a comprehensive programme for businesses to become more environmentally sustainable and aim towards Net Zero, adopt strong social responsibility and strengthen governance. The year will see a strong plan of action that will include: • Increasing and adding value to membership • Building a global economy through international trade • Providing support, information and training • Being a voice and lobbying for business Business does so much more than create wealth for shareholders. The role of business is critical within society. Business provides employment, helps support our welfare state and education system and provides us with enriched lives through education and opportunity. Building a global economy through International Trade One of our key roles as a Chamber accredited to the British Chambers of Commerce is building a global economy through international trade. As a one-stop-shop for international trade, we will continue to: Encourage businesses to consider international trade opportunities and seek new overseas markets. This is through general advice and support available through our magazine and website as well as bespoke advice on new markets. We also offer access to a global network of accredited overseas Chambers of Commerce through the British Chambers of Commerce. We will also continue to expand our international trade training programme, helping businesses to develop their capacity to trade overseas. This includes introductory training to exporting as well as more complex programmes around documentation and legal requirements. Training can also be offered on a bespoke basis and members receive a substantial discount on training. As an accredited Chamber, we can issue documentation on behalf of HMRC. Our highly qualified and professional international trade team offer first class support in terms of issuing key documentation for exporters including Customs Declarations and Certificates of Origin. The team can also offer advice on any aspect of documentation. We will also be aiming to develop ‘twinning’ relationships with international Chambers in key global markets to help drive international trade.

Our membership of the British Chambers of Commerce also means we have a powerful national voice that is highly respected in Westminster and Whitehall. This year we will develop several sector and issue-specific forums, helping us improve our understanding of the key issues businesses face on a sector level which will inform the services we offer as well as lobby and campaign on specific issues sectors are facing. National Apprenticeship Week 2022, celebrated and acknowledged the role apprenticeships have to play in local business, local communities and the development of regional economies. The event brought together the apprenticeship community - apprentices, employers and the learning providers in celebration – national and local – of all that is apprenticeships. Apprenticeships were showcased, student stories shared and employer successes highlighted. Coming after a 24-month period which saw businesses struggle, new apprentice starts decline and apprentices countrywide at risk of losing their positions – NAW 2022 was a very timely celebration of a strong and resilient area working hard to ‘build back better’ whilst actively ‘building the future’. Each month around 23,000 apprenticeship opportunities can be found on the gov. uk website - with new opportunities and skills areas developed and made available almost daily. At Weymouth College, we currently have over 30 vacancies on offer and have seen a measurable increase in new employers looking to take on an apprentice. In Dorset 91% of completed apprenticeships end in a sustained employment destination – a rate higher than that seen nationally. We would like to particularly thank Dorset Chamber, the Dorset and Somerset Training Provider Network and Superior Seals for their ongoing support for the apprenticeship training route as showcased by this year’s Dorset Apprenticeship Awards 2022. Nominations have now closed but we very much look forward to celebrating the category winners following the 18th May awards event. Moors Manor Care Home celebrated its 1st Birthday Moors Manor care home, in St Leonards, near Ringwood, celebrated their first year of serving the local community with a party. Staff and residents commemorated this special occasion in style, with it being a Friday, only fish and chips would do for lunch. We had a visit from Lime Coast Catering, a local mobile company, they cooked us all a fish and chip feast from their van which staff and residents all enjoyed. This was followed by a party with games, quizzes and of course a lovely birthday cake cooked by our chefs. Moors Manor care home has built up excellent reputations within its local communities. The home regularly holds events and activities for its residents and surrounding neighbours including our Macmillan Coffee morning and Christmas Fete which raised nearly £200 for Julia’s House, we’ve also supported the local village hall with their fundraising quiz night. We have a sponsored walk coming up in April to raise funds for Helpful Hounds Assistance Dogs. General Manager, Tracey Aldin said: “It is important to recognise the hard work of our staff here at Moors Manor. For the past year, we have provided a caring home for our residents as well as the best possible environment for our
staff. Today not only enables us to celebrate their hard work, but it’s also an opportunity to thank the residents, their relatives and friends who have made Moors Manor such a loving home.” Moors Manor care home is run by Barchester Healthcare, one of the UK’s largest care providers, which is committed to delivering personalised care across its care homes and hospitals. Diversity is our greatest strength The Poole Unit of the Sea Cadets Corps proudly recognising International Women’s Day which was celebrated on the 8th of March. The theme was, “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”, which addresses several of our Unit’s ongoing agendas. There is a misconception that the Sea Cadet Corps is a male dominated organisation. Not so. Sea Cadets is an inclusive charity that helps young people to achieve their potential by offering a range of social and educational opportunities. Nearly half of our cadets in Poole are girls aged between 10 and 18 and many of our volunteer instructors are women. The charity is committed to equality of opportunity for young people and adults alike and treats all persons fairly and equally. We recognise diversity within our membership and regard it as one of our greatest strengths. International Women’s Day recognises the contribution of both women and girls around the world who are addressing climate change and building a more sustainable future. Keeping our coast clean Clean Jurassic Coast CIC (CJC) is a new Community Interest Company based along the entirety of the South-West UK’s Jurassic Coast and surrounding area. Consisting of like-minded individuals dedicated to making the Coast a better and more habitable place for local residents and sea life alike, CJC members volunteer their time to ensure this beautiful and important World Heritage Site stays that way. During the year of 2021 CJC cleared almost 3000kg of plastic from the local beaches and coast path. From large pieces of hard plastics, mussel floats, fishing line, rope, bottles, waste from big brand names, and countless pieces of polystyrene and micro plastics, the team’s mantra is “Every piece is a victory!”. All of these plastics smash, shred, and break down against the unique geology that is spread along the Coast, and in turn end up killing wildlife and damaging habitats. This is a serious world wide issue and only humanity, working together, can rectify it. A huge issue is waste and plastics from towns and cities ending up in our oceans from rivers and sewage systems eventually washing onto our coastline. This is everybody’s coast: yours, your neighbour’s, your co-workers’ and your friends. We all play a part in creating waste and we all should play a part in reducing waste,
especially living so close to somewhere so delicate. Our chance to make a difference is now. The team is currently separating hard plastics from general rubbish and having as much recycled as possible to prevent it ending up back in the oceans. All of this work is done alongside a strong belief in nature, an optimistic view of our species, with the goal of the preservation of our beautiful and diverse planet, for generations to come. The benefits of beach cleaning are not just for the planet either. We promote health, well-being, and fitness during public events. Beach cleaning is a sociable and fun pastime for all ages and attitudes, and if a small change can be made in the way someone sees their world, that is a small victory for the oceans. CJC were a recent recipient of the government’s Points of Light award, recognising their voluntary work, and are now looking to build a bigger, wider, broader, more inclusive network and are now asking business owners and their employees if they would like to get involved. 10 Years in Business – Success, Challenges, and the Hard Decisions 10 years ago in March 2012, the first Total Guide to site went live. Sat in their tiny, rented office, waiting for developers H2 to give the nod to say the site had successfully propagated, Alex Pollock (our first employee) and Liz Hutchings were full of excitement, fear, anticipation, and impatience! Managing Director, Liz Hutchings, explains her experienced over the last 10 years of running Total Guide to – the Successes, Challenges, and the Hard Decisions. 5 Successes • Building a happy and ambitious team who enjoy a culture of trust, balance, and satisfaction. Frequently used but so true – You’re Only as Good as Your Team! I have found the recruitment process tricky over the years, but we’ve finally nailed this down, and we all enjoy our culture of working hard and smart. The team know if the weathers’ good, I’ll be saying “go out, enjoy it, have a bike ride, run, whatever makes you happy”. I know they’ll put the hours in, and productivity will be through the roof because they’re happy and fulfilled. • We have a 90% client retention rate; many have been with us since day 1 and boast 100% 5-star client reviews on Trip Advisor – this speaks volumes about the results we’re delivering and the relationships we have with our clients. • Being profit making from year 1 and building a cash ‘cushion’. The beauty of being a digital business meant we could start lean and grow organically. • Surviving the lockdowns – the financial cushion saved us. I have managed to find a balance over the years of constantly re-investing in the business while holding cash reserves back. Had it not been for these reserves we wouldn’t be bouncing back as hard as we have. • Our site traffic, social channels, email stats continue to grow year in, year out. In 2021, despite being in a lockdown year we recorded over 2 million page views! 5 Challenges • Suffice to say the last few ‘Covid’ years have tested us more than we could have imagined. Thanks to being a local information source, we couldn’t down tools and furlough – we had to keep going to support the local community and fellow businesses. Our growth has been stunted and we made a small loss as we stopped billing our clients but continued to promote them. • Recruitment and HR – Finally after 10 years I’ve cracked our recruitment process and Hybrid working has really helped open up the talent pool. But I still struggle with identifying exactly what role we need to recruit for when we’re nearing capacity workload wise. This applies to the franchise model too – recruiting the right franchisee is a huge task and selling a franchise to the wrong fit can be costly and time consuming. 40

Time – or lack of it and the culture of always feeling the need to always be ‘on’. Since the launch of our first site. Juggling a 4 and 1 year old with a husband who works away a lot along with navigating a business through lockdown and now re-building has and is a huge challenge. I manage the workload by working through nap times even on days off but realise that never having down time is a mental drain. We can finally get away as a family so the batteries can be fully re-charged. I’m still heavily involved in the business. I know the key to any successful business is the business owner making themselves redundant – I’m working on it! Digital Marketing evolves at such a rapid rate, the team and I are constantly learning and trying new things. It’s a challenge but it’s a big part of why we love what we do; you can’t beat the satisfaction of implementing a new approach and making them work hard for clients. We recently created a reel for a client which reached 22,000 people in just a few days and their engagements and therefore enquiry rate rocketed!
Hard Decisions • I always find recruitment-based decisions to be tricky. Our next hard decision is now we’re in a period of growth, what skills do we need to bring in? During Summer 2021, I was sick of standing still and made the decision to start re-building and invested in taking on new staff. This was a difficult decision still having the threat of more lockdowns hanging over us, but you must take a punt and invest in the future and I’m happy to say it was worth the gamble. I’ve also had to let 2 employees go; this was the right decision for both parties in the long run, but it was difficult at the time. • I’m a Solopreneur and I’m not entirely sure that’s a good thing as we take the business on to the next stage. My next hard decision will be deciding what ‘help’ looks like. • Learning to Say No. It’s taken time, money, and passion to build our traffic and intellectual property. We have many PR Agencies contacting us expecting free placements for their clients (who are paying them!) and it’s insulting. We’ve also had some (thankfully, not many at all) clients expecting the world for a very small budget. We’ve learned to say no, and time morale and profits are higher as a result. We’re also not afraid to turn business down if we feel we’re not able to help a particular business. For example, we’ve been approached by some very niche business and have put them in touch /company/dorset-chamber/

with industry specific media who would be better suited to their target audiences. I’m constantly trying to decide how to be the best business leader and mother I can be. How do I give 100% to both? Difficult decisions around this include childcare options, staff, growth plans. Whether to let it go. I’m not going to lie, during the last lockdown I did have thoughts of handing over the reins. With my girls’ nursery having several closures due to Covid cases and the constant uncertainty of how I would rally the troops and our clients to get through another lockdown, I hit an all-time low. Thankfully this coincided with Christmas, I had a break, we didn’t go into lockdown and I’m back and raring to go! I’m sure every entrepreneur has thoughts of ‘wouldn’t it just be easier if I got a real job’. Maybe, but I know I wouldn’t be as happy and fulfilled and I wouldn’t be able to be there for my family as much as I am now. I love being in control of my own destiny and am excited to see where the next 10 years takes us!
I will be eternally grateful to our wonderful team and previous employees who have given so much and are an honour to know and work with. I must give a special mention to my dear friend and colleague Rachael who has been with us almost since day one. My husband quite accurately describes her as embodying the Commando Spirit – ‘Cheerfulness in the Face of Adversity’, and this has never rung truer than during the last few years of lockdowns. Hendy Group’s commitment to colleague training Hendy Group’s commitment to colleague training saw a resilience workshop held for some of the company’s younger employees at Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium. Alex Danson, who won Olympic Gold in her hockey career together with regional general manager Will Hendy hosted the session for 18-30 years olds working in Bournemouth and Poole. “Resilience is so important in our professional and personal lives and this workshop was designed to help our colleagues deal with challenges and come out stronger,” said Will. “Alex has faced many challenges in her life and by talking about how she has coped with these gave our colleagues an insight into how they can use different techniques in their own lives.” Colleagues from sales, marketing, business improvement and the people team were involved in the workshop where Alex talked about how she deals with low point and moves forward. “One aspect we covered was learning
how to fail fast and moving quickly on,” said Alex. “Being part of the GB hockey team taught me how important it is to know strengths and weaknesses of team members and that is something that can be translated to business.” She also talked about the importance of resilience following her brain injury in 2018 and the physical and mental battle that followed. Tsunami’ of health problems occurring because of poor ‘work from home’ practices, ergonomics specialist warns Too many employers have neglected vital workstation assessments for homeworkers during the pandemic, industry experts Osmond Ergonomics warn – and employees could be paying the price. Guy Osmond, of Osmond Ergonomics, who has 30 years’ experience in the workplace health and wellbeing sector, has urged employers to recommence Display Screen Equipment (DSE) assessments for staff who have moved to homeworking or hybrid working during the pandemic. Without the correct set ups, workers risk developing long term health issues, including potentially debilitating back problems, he warns. Guy said: “I fear we are facing a tsunami of musculoskeletal health issues amongst the population of workers who shifted rapidly to homeworking during the pandemic. “Unfortunately, the ‘temporary’ set ups and makeshift arrangements they adopted have been allowed to continue, as many employers have allowed their risk assessment schedules to drift. Two years down the line, many of those workers are paying the price. “Sorting out those who have developed back aches, neck and shoulder pain, repetitive strain injury and so on used to be more than half of our business but the demand diminished significantly through the pandemic. “But, since the beginning of 2022, we have observed more employers starting to address the problems arising due to people being neglected at home.” Prolonged sitting and poor workstation layout can be the trigger for the musculoskeletal pain

Popular holiday park raises important funds for RNLI Mudeford Lifeboat Station For the last two years, Hoburne Park in Christchurch has been supporting the RNLI Mudeford Lifeboat Station as the park’s nominated charity. Despite covid measures and restrictions on fundraising events, the popular family holiday park has raised more than £5,000 for the muchneeded local charity, which last year responded to nearly 50 call outs. Fundraising at the park has consisted of various themed charity nights with its holidaymakers and holiday homeowners, plus Hoburne’s £1 booking donation scheme. Commenting on the donation, Hoburne Park’s Manager, Shelley Monger, said: “We are hugely grateful for the wonderful work that the RNLI 50

Mudeford Lifeboat Station undertakes in supporting the local area. What does being a B Corp mean to you? Cheryl Hadland explains why Tops & Aspire became UK number 1’s Tops Day Nurseries has operated day nurseries in the local area since 1990, expanding organically from the first start up in Parkstone, Poole, to the 32 nurseries and a training centre spread across the South coast today. Founder and Managing Director, Cheryl Hadland, has seen a considerable amount of change in that time, not only in the early years and adult training sector, but in society and the environment. Ever alert to threats and opportunities, sustainability poses both to any entrepreneur, and there are a few ways to address both, such as engaging in B.Corp., or similar. What factors influenced your decision to pursue certification? I think it’s very easy for companies to claim that they are “green” or “eco” themselves, whereas submitting your data, policies and procedures to an independent organisation exposes you to external scrutiny to prove that you are what you say you are. There are a number of organisations that provide this service such as B.Corp., PlanetMark and ISO standards and there are some that are specific to education such as Eco Schools, Healthy Early Years, and OMEP, and some that are focused on specific areas of sustainability such as Plastic Free and Soil Association “Food for Life”. We could have decided not to be certified externally, but to add a section to the annual report that we are required to produce for Companies House each year with our accounts. We are also required by law to complete an ESOS (energy use) survey every 4 years, which is a very useful survey to do for any business, and does inform where your biggest energy use is, and therefore focuses your attention on reducing it, whether that’s specific buildings, vehicles, or processes for those in the manufacturing sectors. Why did you decide to register as a B-Corporation business? I looked for a standard that was doable, affordable, and appropriate for us and found nothing that was perfect! However, B. Corp. does go further than eco sustainability and is a measure of social impact too which is something that drew me to it. I also found the free access self-assessment tool that came with registration for B. Corp very useful, a structure that we could use to evaluate every aspect of our provision apart from our pedagogy. A fundamental difference between B.Corp and the other accreditations is the commitment to change the legal structure of a company to commit to sustainability, something that I felt would help protect the company’s vision and mission if and when I step back. Tops, Aspire and the Hadland Care Group’s primary mission is about creating value for the community, and for all our stakeholders, rather than the more old-fashioned vision of creating value for just the shareholders/owners through EBITDA and profit. In what ways have Tops and Aspire benefitted from becoming a certified B-Corp? We are the first day nursery group and training provider to become certified B.Corp. I feel it can attract the right type of customers to us, those who are also wanting to save the planet for their children and grandchildren and are interested in learning with us and doing what we can. It helps to have independent assessment of our sustainability to share with people, it helps people trust us in this world where green wash is so common. Results of annual questionnaires to parents and staff support our understanding that sustainability is very important to both parents and colleagues and therefore this certification is evidence of our commitment. Other organisations stories and scores allow us to learn from each other. Collaboration rather than competition is an important attitude, becoming B. Corp has meant joining a wider network of similar minded organisations, so there are some good businesses to business links to be made at all levels. Describe your experience participating in the B-Corp assessment to meet the requirements of this award. The award was gruelling on our time. We had to relook at a lot of what we do, self-assess where we are, plan to improve in some cases. This wasn’t a one-person job but involved all the directors and their teams plus we formed a sustainability group to meet regularly to guide, coordinate and monitor the various action plans. The scoring system is such that you can achieve B-Corp with quite a lot to do still, but it allows you to focus on the areas that are most relevant to your circumstances. Being B.Corp is being on the path to improving sustainability and we are expected to chip away at our actions into the future and to progress, which is certainly our intention. What do you believe the B-Corp status can positively influence a company’s reputation? B Corp certification is held by around 5,000 companies in 77 countries, that is a significant force for good that we are proud to be part of, and I think that as more companies join and it becomes better known, this will be good for us also. Certainly there are more B.Corp companies than PlanetMark companies, which was a close second although I felt PlanetMark were rather too focused on the environment than on social or economic impact for us. The ISO standards are also a good option, again requiring rigorous reflection of all relevant policies and procedures, but again more environmental than social or economic. Having B.Corp certification may help with winning government contracts and other awards, which in turn should help the companies’ reputations, but we shall see! Certainly, the process that we have gone through, and the improvements we have made, are supporting our reputation as a sustainable organisation.
What sustainable plans do you have for the company in the future? We would like to be carbon neutral or even positive as soon as possible. We would like to invest to improve insulation on sites with older insulation, to instal more efficient heating systems, for example, but this must be balanced against the more pressing needs of colleagues currently earning low salaries due to poor government direct funding of early years education and childcare and indirectly with poor support for parents, which are both amongst the worst in the developed world. I envy countries like Denmark and Sweden, New Zealand, and the other European countries where the whole community shares in the education and care of the youngest children knowing what a great investment this is and realising that parents need help to provide the best opportunities for the children, who will in due course return this investment many times over to everyone. Whole communities need to be involved in children’s education, not just the parents, and they will all benefit as the next generations take over. Sustainability includes investment in people as well as the planet and financial sustainability, it is not just about the environment. Our staff groups for LGBTQ, and Men (being the minority), and our multi-cultural, and mental health groups all meet regularly and bring actions to the company to make our environments as welcoming and inclusive as possible for colleagues, which in turn provides the best support for the diverse children who attend our settings. We do however, plan to make more of our gardens for the children in the future, encouraging diversity (butterflies and bugs), respect for living creatures, learning about growing food at the same time as supplementing children’s diets. We have a wonderful head chef, who is working with local farmers as well as our main suppliers to provide as healthy and sustainable diet as possible, focusing on plant based and unprocessed foods, having already cut added salt and sugar many years ago.

Albert Goodman welcomes Iain McVicar as next managing partner Regional chartered accountancy firm Albert Goodman announced its managing partner, Richard Bugler, will be stepping down after serving six successful years at the helm. A new successor and current partner at the firm, Iain McVicar, will take on the role for the same term starting on 1 May. Richard trained at Albert Goodman before working his way up to partner status and eventually taking on the six-year term as managing partner in 2016. Under his leadership he has exponentially grown the firm year on year, promoted the board of partners to include a 50% female partnership and invested heavily in new premises in Weymouth, Weston-super-Mare and the firm’s headquarters in Taunton. Richard will continue to stay on at Albert Goodman as a partner with a particular focus on the firm’s corporate finance offering. As part of the succession planning, the partnership board has elected Iain McVicar, a partner in the farming estates team, to replace Richard. Iain will honour the firm’s five-year commitment to grow the business and continue to meet Albert Goodman’s sustainability goal of becoming net zero by 2030. This will complement their work with large corporates across the region, especially next generation business leaders, who are looking to drive their own businesses forward in a sustainable way. Amiri Construction are starting construction of the £7 million new design and build Business School at Barton Peveril College in Eastleigh. The project located at their Chestnut Avenue campus in Eastleigh sees the build of a new 2,789m2 Business School. The new development will include 29 classrooms, seminar room, tutorial space, student study zone, admin offices, social space, a second floor terrace and landscaping of the car park and courtyard area. The project will achieve BREEAM ‘very good’ by incorporating green technologies such as Solar Panels and Ground Source Heat Pumps. The project is due to complete Easter 2023.
