Taking a Moment to Pause and Plan
DESIGN, PRODUCTION AND SALES
2025 was a hugely challenging year for business. Inflation, rising costs, tax increases and recruitment challenges in many sectors. Yet, Dorset businesses continue to show great resilience and determination, and I believe this positive mindset is incredibly important. As we return from the Christmas break and think about the year ahead, it’s an ideal time to take a breath, look back, and think about where we are and where we want to go. Pausing to reflect on the past year allows us to celebrate our wins, learn from challenges and think about the opportunities. It’s important to focus on the future, now understanding what worked, what didn’t, and how we can do better. Looking ahead gives us clarity and focus. Setting goals, spotting opportunities, and preparing for possible obstacles helps ensure we move forward with purpose. Planning and a measured approach helps us to be stronger, smarter, and more resilient. So, as we embark on this new year, I encourage you to take a moment to pause, reflect, and plan. A little reflection today can make a big difference tomorrow and help us all make 2026 a year of meaningful progress. I’d also like to take a moment to thank all of our members, partners, Directors and Ambassadors for your support and look forward to working with you in the year ahead.

Reviving Bournemouth:
Repurposing, Growth and Investment More than 60 people gathered in Bournemouth in November to hear all about the emerging opportunities for the town centre. The event, hosted by Savills at Patch, saw experts from Savills Research, the Bournemouth Town Centre BID, BCP Council and Patch share insights into the evolving landscape of the town centre, success stories and optimism around future growth and investment. Tom Whittington, director, Savills Research, explored consumer evolution and how it is changing the town centres in general, with a specific focus on the supply in Bournemouth and renewed retail demand from firms including The Ivy and Patch. With 12,000 residential units in the pipeline in the primary retail catchment area, and more than 4,500 within 2km of the city centre, residential development is expected to improve performance of existing business. Whittington also looked at the daytime economy and the impact of the town centre workforce of almost 10,000 people, the 23,000 students and 3,800 new graduates to the city each year, as well as the visitor economy, which accounts for around £250m. Tom Whittington said: “Bournemouth town centre faces many of the same challenges we see on high streets up and down the country, but it punches above its weight on a number of metrics. The visitor profile is both significant and varied, including residents, 6

workforce, university and tourism. It is one of the best towns for food and beverage provision in the country, with a notable improvement in quality on the back of the arrival of The Ivy and Botanist. Its rents have rebased and the business rate revaluation will bring relief to a significant proportion of town centre retailers, reflecting Bournemouth’s retail occupational affordability relative to comparable locations. Several notable redevelopments are bringing well configured units back into play on key pitches, following the continued repurposing of Bobby’s department store, which for all accounts is an exemplar of UK retail repurposing. “There remains work to be done on improving the offer, but the fundamentals are there that should see an improvement in retailer demand as the market improves.” Paul Kinvig of Bournemouth Town Centre Bid then spoke on ‘Believing in Bournemouth’. He said: “Our accompanying qualitative research focuses on talking to those organisations, businesses and individuals who have chosen Bournemouth town centre as a place to set up, expand into and invest in. Their stories deliver actual examples of where ‘real life’ reflects the information in the excellent report from Savills. /company/dorset-chamber/
Peter Lamb, Savills
“Whether it’s retail, leisure, hospitality, professional services, residential, education or events, these developments illustrate why our town centre continues to attract investment. Reimagining the offer of towns and cities is key to their future success and these two documents illustrate why Bournemouth town centre is well placed to drive as well as benefit from that change.” The event concluded with a panel session hosted by Peter Lamb of Savills Planning, including Tom Whittington and Paul Kinvig along with Councillor Richard Herrett from BCP Council and Freddie Fforde from Patch. Peter Lamb of the Savills Planning team in Wimborne who organised the event said: “We were delighted to see so many people come together to engage in a discussion about the key issues facing Bournemouth town centre. I have lived and worked in the town for over 20 years and during this time I have seen quite a bit of change. The challenges that Bournemouth faces are not unique and it is actually performing well across a number of metrics. Investing in Bournemouth now represents good value for money and there are many reasons for optimism.” www.savills.com

Hendy Group Celebrates 115th Anniversary of Becoming Ford’s First British Retailer Hendy Group, one of the UK’s largest independent family-run dealer groups, is celebrating a remarkable anniversary: representing Ford Motor Company in Britain for 115 years. The business became the country’s first retailer for Ford back in 1910 after Southampton-based Percy Hendy, already by then a sales agent for some of the world’s earliest automobiles, heard about the Model T and dashed to Southampton Docks to see if he could meet Henry Ford, who had travelled by ship from America to announce a new factory in Trafford Park, Manchester. The meeting was a success, and on 7 November 1910 at Southampton docks, Hendy and Ford penned the first official agreement for the sale of Ford vehicles in Britain, initially from a shop in East Street, Southampton. At times of national crisis, Hendy’s relationship with Ford went far beyond the humble car; during the Second World War, Hendy’s Vincent’s Walk and Chandler Ford’s premises were used to build Spitfire planes. Today, the Hendy Group operates eight Ford dealerships across Hampshire, Kent, Surrey, and West Sussex. Ford is now only one part of the story for Hendy Group,
as it currently represents 25 different manufacturers at over 60 locations and recently celebrated its 165th anniversary. Paul Hendy, Chief Executive at Hendy Group, adds: “The Hendy family were trailblazers for Ford in Britain and it’s a
privilege to have represented the brand for so long. Ford has always been a vital part of the Hendy Group’s history, and we are excited about supporting the business in a new era of electrified mobility.” www.hendy.co.uk

Belize Civic Centre – Belize Civic Center in the Caribbean country designed and manufactured by REIDsteel.
Strong as Steel for 107 Years and Counting Sun head Resilience is ingrained into the fabric of Christchurch structural steel company REIDsteel. As 2026 gets underway, the firm marks its 107th year in business during which time it has designed, manufactured and built thousands of preengineered steel-framed structures and has exported to more than 140 countries. Reid’s bridges, hangars, airport terminals, buildings, stadia, defensive gates, car parks, hospitals, warehouses and other structures stand on every continent on earth. Today, the modern and forward-thinking firm employs more than 130 people, 400 at peak times through contractors; it is one of the world’s leading structural steel firms and has ambitious growth plans to redevelop its Christchurch site. The secrets of success at the heart of REIDsteel’s continued resilience are many but include a culture of innovation, forward thinking investment, robust quality management, faith in its business model and the talents of its people. REIDsteel leads the field with buildable designs and advanced structural engineering techniques that allow it to find the most effective and bespoke solution. It has developed several patents over the years, especially for large spans, that allow the firm to produce lighter yet stiffer structures.
Innovation means that REIDsteel has agility, can change with the times and retain a competitive edge that drives business and fuels growth. REIDsteel’s business model with primary and secondary steel plus cladding, glazing and doors as required, means less trades variance for clients. This saves time and money, delivers greater efficiencies and offers less potential for problems while giving REIDsteel greater control and competitive advantage in the marketplace. Its international outlook, along with strong UK business, means that the company can pivot in the face economic or political volatility. A family-owned firm, REIDsteel has a diverse board which invests to ensure it is able to operate efficiently, is financially resilient and can ensure business continuity in the face of challenges or unexpected occurrences. Recent investment includes acquisition of an adjacent property under its plans for modern offices and a staff welfare centre on its 6.4 acre site. The £10m development will bring multiple manufacturing processes into a single, automated production line with modern technology under one roof. It will allow REIDsteel to significantly increase productivity, reduce reliance on
sub-contractors, create more highly-skilled employment and apprenticeships, and boost the local economy while cutting its carbon footprint and improving operational resilience. It will also enhance the company’s ability within both the domestic and export markets and pave the way for long term growth and the future of the business. Simon Boyd, managing director, said: “The company’s longevity is testament to resilience built through many years of accumulated knowledge and experience. “It has given us the ability to weather storms, anticipate potential threats, seize opportunities, adapt to changing circumstances and move with the times to deliver the best service, grow the business and confidently face any future challenges. “Our people are our greatest asset while our no blame culture and team ethos means we are open to change and can identify areas for continuous improvement to build further resilience. “Our redevelopment will allow us to further modernise. futureproof the business, grow and thrive for the next hundred years whatever that may bring.” www.reidsteel.com REIDsteel managing director Simon Boyd

How can businesses stay ahead in a competitive talent market? Ian Creamer, Head of Talent Attraction at Lester Aldridge, shares practical strategies for building resilience into your hiring processes. With over 20 years of global HR leadership experience, Ian explains why flexibility, data-driven decisions and a candidate-focused approach are key to thriving in today’s changing landscape. Building Resilience in Hiring: Strategies for a Changing Talent Landscape When I joined Lester Aldridge just over six months ago, the only thing I negotiated in my offer letter was my job title – changing it from Talent Acquisition to Talent Attraction. It might seem like a small tweak, but it shifted the focus from transactional recruitment to a longer-term approach centred on building relationships and creating an employer brand that truly reflects who we are as a firm. In today’s unpredictable business environment, resilience in hiring has become essential. Economic uncertainty, evolving candidate expectations and the rapid adoption of technologies such as AI have made attracting talent more complex than ever. Organisations that embed resilience into their hiring strategies can adapt quickly, maintain momentum and secure the talent they need to thrive. Why Resilience Matters in Hiring Recruitment has always had its challenges, but recent disruptions have amplified the pressure. Skills gaps are widening, competition for top talent is fierce – even though there appear to be more candidates in the market – and traditional recruitment models often struggle under stress. Without resilience built into your processes, you risk delays, poor candidate experiences and losing critical talent to competitors.
• Data-Driven Decisions: Analytics provide insight into talent trends, enabling better planning rather than reactive scrambling. • Candidate-Centric Approach: Strong, consistent employer branding and transparent communication foster trust, even during uncertainty. • Diversification: Expanding sourcing channels and talent pools reduces dependency on a single pipeline and mitigates risk. Practical Strategies to Build Resilience Turning principles into action requires deliberate investment: • Leverage Technology: When you receive hundreds of applications for a junior role, tools like AI-driven screening and automation can streamline processes and free recruiters to focus on relationship-building. But be careful – there is a lot of discussion about whether some of these tools, which are being rushed out by suppliers, are screening applications fairly and equitably! • Develop Talent Pipelines: Proactive engagement with passive candidates ensures a ready pool for critical roles. We are now starting to have regular, proactive conversations with people who we might not have a role for today but will likely have something over the next 12 months. This takes time, but the payoff can be huge! • Train Hiring Teams: Equip your people with the skills to adapt quickly and reduce bias, ensuring fair and efficient decisions.
• Encourage Collaboration: Encourage regular communication between recruiters and business leaders to anticipate skills needs and respond cohesively. It’s really important to me to have a detailed understanding of what’s happening across our teams, so I can give the candidate the best possible view. I make sure to invest my time in attending team meetings and events! • Commit to Continuous Learning: Keep your teams up to date on trends, tools and best practices. Resilience in hiring isn’t just about surviving disruption – it’s about thriving through it. By embracing flexibility, data and candidate-focused strategies, organisations can build robust systems that deliver consistent results. Prioritising resilience today gives us the best chance of securing the talent we need tomorrow. Want to learn more or discuss your hiring strategy? Core Principles of Resilient Hiring Resilience starts with four key principles: • Flexibility in Processes: Rigid workflows can break under pressure. Adaptive processes, supported by technology, allow teams to pivot quickly when priorities change.
Organisations that embed resilience into their hiring strategies can adapt quickly, maintain momentum and secure the talent they need to thrive. 10

New Voices in Construction:
Dorset’s Female Apprentices Leading the Way The construction sector remains a critical driver of economic growth across the UK - and Dorset is no exception. As demand for a highly skilled workforce continues to rise, the sector has committed to opening its doors to a more diverse talent pipeline than ever before and is working hard to offset preconceptions. Increasingly, women are stepping into roles that have long been dominated by men, bringing fresh perspectives, new strengths, and a determination to shape the future of the industry. In this feature, Dorset Business Focus shares insights from two apprentices from Suttles Projects - who talk about their journeys, motivations and experiences working in this fast-evolving sector. Their full interviews can be viewed on the Dorset Skill LinkedIn page.. being involved in projects from concept through to completion and playing a part in delivering infrastructures that people rely on every day.
Rosita Koleva joined Suttles Projects as a Degree Apprentice Quantity Surveyor in 2025. What inspired you to pursue a career in construction? Although this can sound cliché, the inspiration to pursue a career in construction stems directly from my dad. I still remember long drives across the South of England where, instead of pointing out landmarks, or roadside attractions, he’d proudly gesture towards a flyover or bridge and say, “I worked on that one”. There’s something rewarding about
How do you deal with the challenges that come with being a woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry? Being a woman in a traditionally male industry comes with challenges but is also a source of motivation. As a DA I have found myself in situations where I have needed to prove my knowledge and capability to clients. This can be seen as discouraging, but using it as fuel to do better, has helped. I have always had a strong drive to excel and persevere, especially during the harder times, making these one of the more powerful tools you can have in the industry. What has helped me navigate through these moments is staying confident in my abilities and having my mentor who is supportive in my education, open to questions, and genuinely wants to see me
The truth is that employers, clients and project teams are more open than ever to diversity – not only because it looks good on paper, but because it drives better outcomes. 12

grow in the industry. Things are shifting for the better, we are seeing more awareness and representation of women stepping into roles that were once considered out of reach. What advice would you give to other women, thinking about a career in construction? Being a woman in this industry should not be something you shy away from, and apologise for, don’t be afraid to take up space and use your perspective to your advantage. I have definitely stepped into rooms where I was in the minority, but rather than seeing that as a setback, I viewed it as a strength and as something to be proud of. The truth is that employers, clients and project teams are more open than ever to diversity – not only because it looks good on paper, but because it drives better outcomes. What can employers do to make the construction sector more attractive to women? First and foremost, representation matters. Seeing women in leadership roles, on-site, and in meetings sends powerful messages to younger girls thinking about the industry. It’s not about ticking boxes, it’s about showing women are already making an impact across all levels of the industry. Beyond that, I think mentorship, flexible pathways and early exposure are key. This can be created through more school partnership, work experiences, and apprenticeship schemes. Adding in flexible working options and inclusive workplace cultures makes the industry more appealing to those who are thinking about families, making the industry more inclusive.

Olivia Harris is a Civil Engineering Degree Apprentice at Suttle Projects, studying at Portsmouth University she has recently completed the first year of her five-year apprenticeship in her first role in the construction sector. What inspired you to pursue a career in the construction industry? I first discovered civil engineering at a careers fair, where I listened to a talk about construction and spoke with a female civil engineer. Meeting her inspired me to explore the industry further, and I went on to complete a week of work experience shadowing her. What appeals to me most about construction and engineering is that it’s not just about building structures,
but about solving problems, taking on challenges, and delivering projects that make a real difference to the world around us. I’m also motivated by the chance to challenge stereotypes and pursue something unique and different from the usual path. How do you deal with the challenges that come with being a woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry? Being a woman in a male-dominated industry motivates me to show what’s possible and set an example for others. I’ve felt supported throughout my journey, both at work and at university, and I’m proud that Suttles are actively creating opportunities for more women to join construction. For me, it’s not about proving people wrong but about proving what women can achieve in this field. I see my role as part of a wider change – helping to challenge outdated

perceptions and showing that women can thrive in every aspect of construction. What advice would you give to other women, thinking about a career in construction? I’d say: absolutely go for it. The construction industry is evolving and full of opportunities – from engineering and project management to site work and business roles. Women, like men, bring important qualities to the workplace, such as being organised, hardworking, structured, and strong team players. Having more women in the industry adds balance and diversity, which helps projects succeed. One of the best parts of construction is the variety of people you get to work with. Different perspectives and experiences make projects stronger, and I’ve seen how a mix of voices leads to more creative solutions. It’s a brilliant opportunity for women to get involved, share their ideas, and make a real impact. Challenges exist, but the rewards and opportunities far outweigh them. What could employers do to make construction more attractive to women? One of the biggest actions employers can take is ensuring more women are visible at careers fairs and industry events. The talk I attended by a female engineer was what first inspired me to consider this career and having that kind of role model makes a huge difference. For me, having someone to look up to was crucial, and now, as the first female degree apprentice – and the first-degree apprentice overall – at my company, I hope I can inspire the women who follow after me. www.suttleprojects.co.uk 13

Forvis Mazars: Autumn Budget 2025 Summary The day after the UK Budget (Thursday 27 November), the Forvis Mazars office in Poole delivered their update and analysis, to a captive local audience. The event covered all changes affecting businesses, individuals, and the wider UK economy. After weeks of leaks, tweaks and an OBR report that jumped the gun, Rachel Reeves has delivered her Autumn Budget for 2025. There were no surprises to spook markets, but the Chancellor has opted for stability overgrowth, sticking firmly to fiscal rules. Economic summary The OBR didn’t downgrade growth as aggressively as feared ahead of the Budget, meaning the much-lamented black hole didn’t need to be closed to the same degree, but the Chancellor still chose caution over ambition. This budget is not a stimulative one; growth has been sacrificed on the altars of stability and politics. The upside? We will likely avoid another black-hole-closing budget. Investors can take comfort: the Chancellor’s choices have not thrown UK government bonds or sterling into disarray. By opting for tax-heavy, progressive measures while sparing low earners, Rachel Reeves has prioritised shoring up the government’s coffers and
more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news
keeping Labour’s backbenchers onside. Growth allowances exist, but they are modest and targeted rather than transformative. Taxation has been levied piecemeal to raise incremental revenue and build fiscal headroom. Reeves avoided broad-based income tax hikes on “working people,” but few will feel better off. Optics may have been achieved, but substance for growth is lacking. Stability was the overriding goal. Reeves avoided borrowing, and markets responded calmly—bond yields have broadly remained steady. Keeping borrowing costs under control was central to avoiding another attempt at “filling the black hole left by the previous government.” Inflation control also played a role; a major borrow-and-spend event would have raised price concerns, and Reeves wisely sidestepped that risk. Where optics fall short is in the growth narrative. Historically, heavy borrowing was offset by robust growth, reducing debt-toGDP ratios—true after both world wars and even in the 1970s. That dynamic is
absent today. As the OBR acknowledges, and to Reeves’ likely frustration, the UK faces a low-productivity era with no sign of reverting to pre-pandemic norms. This budget does little to change that trajectory. Tax Updates For a full list of the Autumn 2025 tax changes, including the key takeaways, scan the QR Code www.forvismazars.com

As well as upgrading the university’s existing facilities, the investment will be used to launch a new, AI-powered, Security Operations Centre of the Future for students to learn how to detect and respond to realistic cyber threats. “There is a well-documented shortage of digital and cyber skills in the UK and we are seeing an increasing number of highprofile cyber-attacks on businesses such as those on Marks and Spencer and Co-Op,” said Professor Nan Jiang, Head of BU’s School of Computing and Engineering. “Rapid advances in AI have intensified the threats and increased the pressure on cyber professionals. Through the new centre we will provide immersive critical incident scenarios, so students can develop the skills needed to meet urgent industry demand and strengthen the UK’s cyber resilience,” he added.
The Security Operations Centre will give students the chance to work with industry partners such as Battle Lab, ESET and JP Morgan to ensure their learning is based on real-world needs. Uniquely, the centre will also explore ways to support the psychological wellbeing of cyber professionals. “We are seeing high levels of burnout in the industry which is being exacerbated by the intensity of AI-driven attacks,” said Vasilis Katos, Professor in Cyber Security at BU. “So unlike many other cyber centres we will be integrating mental health support into cyber resilience programmes.” The funding will also be used for university staff and students to run training courses for members of the public and local businesses as part of the Dorset Digital Skills Partnership, further helping to build up cyber resilience
“Small and Medium-sized Enterprises make up 99.8% of all businesses in Dorset,” Professor Jiang explained. “This means

These training opportunities will include skills bootcamps, employer-designed programmes and new flexible short courses. “Small and Medium-sized Enterprises make up 99.8% of all businesses in Dorset,” Professor Jiang explained. “This means the facility will play a particularly vital role in upskilling the workforce in our local community and support regional and national economic growth strategies.” Professor Christos Gatzidis, Dean of the Faculty of Media, Science and Technology at BU said: “This award recognises the strengths of Bournemouth University in the area of cyber security and enables the development of new and very specialised infrastructure. Our new centre will support not just our current and future students but also external partners and local community, in this key area of the UK’s current industrial strategy.” The university will launch the new Cyber Competence Centre in March 2026. www.bournemouth.ac.uk

Investing in the Future:
Why You Can’t Afford to Miss Out on Apprenticeships In today’s fast-paced business landscape, small and medium-sized businesses face an increasingly challenging environment. Markets are competitive, technology is advancing at speed and skill requirements continue to shift. For many, particularly those without the resources of much larger corporations, finding and retaining skilled staff can be a major hurdle, that affects productivity, longevity and growth. This is where apprenticeships can be transformative. As the largest apprenticeship provider in the region, with almost 2,000 apprentices and over 1,000 employers per year, Bournemouth and Poole College is witnessing firsthand the positive impact apprentices bring to local businesses and the wider economy, from hands-on productivity to long-term workforce development. Shaping, Not Just Hiring One of the greatest advantages of apprenticeships is their ability to provide practical, industry-ready skills directly within the workplace. Apprentices learn whilst they earn, developing real work experience, technical knowledge and professional competencies aligned with the needs of the sector. Employers aren’t simply hiring staff, but are shaping their talent from day one. A Powerful Example One former College apprentice began her journey on a Beauty Therapy apprenticeship,
before progressing into the workplace full-time. Equipped with industry training, hands-on experience and the support of her employer, she went on to launch one of Bournemouth’s leading beauty businesses. Today, she has come full circle and now hires apprentices from the College herself, offering young learners the same opportunity she once received. The Numbers Add Up The financial benefits are equally compelling. Apprenticeships allow employers to lower training and recruitment costs, providing real returns on investment. Rather than spending time and money searching for experienced staff in a competitive hiring market, businesses can develop individuals who are trained specifically for the needs of their business. This tailored approach leads to better staff alignment, stronger workplace culture and improved
productivity. Many employers find their apprentices quickly become essential team members who deliver real business value. We Handle the Heavy Lifting Bournemouth and Poole College has long been committed to supporting employers in unlocking these opportunities. Working with over 1,000 businesses across the region, the College offers a comprehensive apprenticeship support service, free of charge, to help companies select highcalibre, motivated candidates who are ready to gain hands-on experience. Whether businesses are hiring school leavers, graduates, career developers or career changers, the College ensures they receive training aligned to latest industry standards. For employers looking to stay ahead, apprenticeships are more than a training pathway, they are a strategic business decision.
Take Your Next Step Join Bournemouth and Poole College at ‘Apprenticeships Unlocked’ on 5th February 2026 to explore how apprenticeships are shaping futures in the region. www.thecollege.co.uk

AFC Bournemouth Community Sports Trust Support Young Carers AFC Bournemouth Community Sports Trust has been working with Muscliff Primary School in Bournemouth to support their community of Young Carers, through the Premier League Primary Stars programme. Young Carers are children and young people under the age of 18, who take on vital caring roles within their families. Muscliff Primary has made exceptional efforts to identify and support these pupils within their school, creating a caring, nurturing environment where young carers feel recognised and valued, also working closely with MYTIME Young Carers. Inspired by the school’s commitment to this group of young people, AFC Bournemouth Community Sports Trust have been delighted to offer football sessions designed specifically to give these pupils time to enjoy themselves, build confidence, and develop new skills. The Community Sports Trust coaches visited the young people weekly over six weeks, to host a series of fun inclusive outdoor sessions, tailored to a wide range of ages and abilities from Reception to Year 6, whilst linking to the Premier League’s values of being fair, inspiring, ambitious and connected.
Whether the children were trying football for the first time or looking to develop their techniques, the Community Sports Trust ensured everyone felt supported, involved, and encouraged, but most importantly, it provided an opportunity for these young people to have fun and connect with their peers away from their usual responsibilities. President’s Column by Gareth Sherwood As we step into 2026, I’m conscious of two realities: the headwinds facing most Dorset businesses; and the oldfashioned British spirit I see so much of here in Dorset; we keep calm and crack on. This year we must continue to use the risks we face as a driver of innovation and decisions; sharpen competitiveness, invest in people, improve products, reduce waste and raise productivity; all whilst deepening our partnerships. From AI to green transport, apprenticeships to wellbeing, historic businesses to startups; Dorset has the ingredients to be the best place to work in the UK; we balance healthy lives, strong families, hard work and great business. The Chamber will be there; championing your interests, creating spaces to connect, working for investment, and telling the story of Dorset enterprise widely with honesty and purpose (plus the odd bad joke from the President). 2026 won’t be easy, when has any year been easy? But we have the tools to succeed; grit, purpose, collaboration and adaptability. With this, Dorset is already well supplied; so join me in raising a glass to 2026. Let’s crack on and make it a good one! 25

Dorset Chamber Platinum Membership Renewal Marks Over a Decade of Partnership Dorset Chamber’s long-standing Platinum Partner, A-One Insurance Group is proud to celebrate more than ten years of Platinum Membership at the end of 2025. To mark this ongoing commitment, A-One have launched a free, no-obligation Insurance Health Check for all existing Dorset Chamber members throughout 2026.
of insurance needs and practical recommendations. There is no sales pitch, just expert insight to help your business stay resilient and well-protected. Whether you are a growing SME or a bigger, corporate organisation, this service ensures your insurance keeps pace with your business.
In each case, the businesses were insured through different brokers. Our team took the time to understand how each organisation had grown and diversified. Too often, brokers rely on clients to update them about changes, but we believe in proactive, ongoing contact to ensure risks are managed effectively, so that nothing is missed as businesses evolve.
Here A-One explain further: As the official insurance partner of Dorset Chamber, we understand the pressures and complexities facing local businesses; from rising costs and regulatory changes to evolving risks. Our complimentary Insurance Health Check is designed to give businesses clarity, confidence and peace of mind.
Real Examples: Helping Dorset Businesses Stay Protected
A Decade of Partnership and a Stronger Future Ahead
What Is the A-One Insurance Health Check? Our Insurance Health Check is a straightforward review of your existing insurance arrangements, created to help ensure your business is properly protected, competitively priced and compliant with current regulations. The review identifies: • Gaps in cover that could leave your business exposed • Areas of overspend or duplicated cover • Emerging risks relevant to your industry sector All Dorset Chamber Members that apply will receive a short, tailored report followed by a clear, jargon-free discussion
Our proactive approach has already helped local Dorset businesses uncover significant issues in their insurance cover: Independent Hotelier: We discovered that the buildings sums insured were significantly below what was required. A major claim could have resulted in severe underinsurance, leaving the owner personally exposed to substantial costs. Manufacturing Company: A review revealed that business interruption cover had been calculated incorrectly. In the event of a large claim, the business could have faced closure due to inadequate protection.
A One director, Ryan Jupp, commented that “renewing our Platinum Partnership with Dorset Chamber was a no-brainer for us, we remain committed to supporting the region’s businesses with expert advice, personal service and robust protection”. All Dorset Chamber members are invited to take advantage of the free Insurance Health Check throughout 2026. For more information or to book your review, please speak to one the A-One representatives at the next Dorset Chamber event, or contact today: 0333 222 1030 | www.aoig.co.uk
We identified important additional covers not previously discussed, including options to protect directors personally as well as the limited company.

Building Dorset’s Workforce for the Future Businesses across Dorset face a rapidly changing skills landscape. To stay competitive, employers need a workforce equipped not only with technical expertise but also with essential capabilities like communication, problem-solving, and digital fluency. That’s where Local Skills Improvement Plans (LSIPs) come in. Introduced by the Department for Education in 2022, LSIPs are designed to make education and training more responsive to local labour market needs. Dorset’s LSIP, led by Dorset Chamber as the Employer Representative Body, has been at the forefront of this mission since 2023—aligning training provision with employer priorities and driving collaboration between businesses, councils, and education providers. What’s Been Achieved? The first and current Dorset LSIP focuses on five sectors: Health and Social Care; Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (including Aerospace, Defence and Marine); Construction; Digital Technology and Creative; and Agriculture, Agri-tech and Aquaculture. It also addressed cross-cutting needs such as Net Zero and digital skills. Since its launch, the plan has delivered measurable progress: more businesses engaging with government-funded training, increased participation in employer designed qualifications, and a stronger focus on essential skills which employers now rank as highly as technical ones—a trend accelerated by post-pandemic workplace changes. Dorset LISP has enabled educators to attract capital funding for new resources as well as funding to develop new qualifications.
Why It Matters for Business Skills are the foundation of growth. By engaging with LSIP2, businesses can influence training provision, secure the talent they need, and future-proof their workforce. Dorset Chamber’s message is clear: collaboration is key. Together, we can build a skills system that drives productivity, innovation, and opportunity across the region.

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS
Why Intellectual Property (IP) Deserves a Place in Every SME’s Strategic Plan Ask most SME owners to list their most valuable business assets, and they’ll probably mention their premises, stock, equipment, or maybe the cash in the bank. Accountants might add debtors, goodwill, and other intangibles. But there’s one asset, often their most important, that almost never appears on the balance sheet: Intellectual Property (IP). In this feature, specialists Barker Brettell explain the significance of prioritising this most vital asset. Trade marks, copyright, designs and patents are all forms of IP, and are the building blocks of a company’s identity, reputation, and competitive advantage. Yet because they’re not routinely valued or recorded in financial statements, they’re frequently overlooked until a problem arises. By then, it’s often too late. Why IP matters more than many realise For many modern businesses, IP is more valuable than their physical assets. A distinctive brand attracts customers. Innovative products set them apart from competitors. Creative works, from software to marketing content, generates revenue. Without protection, those same assets can be copied, misused, or even claimed by others. The consequences range from lost sales to legal disputes, plus the associated expense; and in the worst cases, loss of the business’s very identity. Why IP is missing from the balance sheet The omission isn’t an oversight in the accounting process, but we are told, a quirk of accounting rules. IP often isn’t recognised as an asset unless it’s been acquired or specifically valued, which means that the most valuable creations businesses develop in-house simply don’t appear in the accounts. more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news
This invisibility creates a dangerous misconception: “If it’s not on the balance sheet, it can’t be that important”. In reality, it can be the very thing driving profits and long-term growth. The insurance policy for your brand Protecting IP is not unlike taking out an insurance policy. You hope you never need to make a claim, but when the unexpected happens, you’ll be relieved you did. Just as you wouldn’t leave your business premises uninsured, it makes no sense to leave your brands, designs, or innovations unprotected. The cost of IP protection is often a fraction of the losses that could result from infringement and unlike most insurance, it can add tangible value to the business by making assets more secure, more marketable, and more attractive to investors. Not just for big businesses There is a persistent myth that IP protection is only worth it for large corporations with deep pockets. The truth is the opposite: smaller businesses are often more vulnerable to IP theft because they lack the resources to fight lengthy disputes and so the loss of a key product, brand name, or design can be devastating. Even modest steps, like registering a trade mark or asserting copyright, can make a big difference. These measures are accessible and affordable for SMEs and can and should form a crucial part of their growth and risk management strategy.
Proactive protection pays off Treating IP protection as an afterthought can be costly. Once a competitor has copied a product or registered a similar brand, reclaiming those rights becomes an uphill battle. By contrast, protecting IP early: • Deters potential infringers; • Strengthens a business’s market position; • Increases asset value – useful for attracting investment or during a sale; • Provides clarity and security in collaborations, partnerships, and licensing deals. Let’s make IP part of the bigger picture The first step is awareness. The next is action. Recognising IP as a strategic asset will help you or your clients see the bigger picture and build long-term value in the company. Ask you or your clients these questions to identify their IP, understand its importance, and protect it where possible: • What names, logos, or slogans are central to the business’s identity? • Are there unique products or designs that give them a competitive edge? • Have they developed original content, software, or inventions? To find out more about putting in place the right protections, contact the team at Barker Brettell, www.barkerbrettell.co.uk 37

Dorset Chamber Opens Next Chapter Dorset Chamber has appointed the first honorary figurehead of its kind in its history – HM Lord-Lieutenant of Dorset Michael Dooley. He was announced in the newly created role of ‘patron’ before the start of the AGM when its new president, vice-president and other office bearers were elected. Gareth Sherwood, chief executive of YMCA Bournemouth, was chosen as president and Simon Boyd, managing director of REIDsteel, became vice-president. Nearly 100 business people attended the event at the Marriott Hotel in Bournemouth before the chamber’s annual Christmas lunch for 160 guests, which included a toy collection and raffle in aid of the Cash for Kids charity. Chamber chief executive Ian Girling said: “Gareth is an exceptional business leader who will bring great energy, experience and insight to the role of president while the appointment of Michael further strengthens our mission to foster growth, collaboration and opportunity for businesses of all sizes. “His role of patron is a significant one – symbolic of our values, our ambition and our commitment to serving the
business community across Dorset.” Ian added: “Despite what is expected to be another challenging year ahead, there was a great deal of characteristic positivity amongst businesses at the annual meeting which gives cause for optimism as we look ahead.” The Lord Lieutenant is the Crown’s representative in Dorset. Mr Dooley was appointed in September 2024. His professional career was in medicine, including roles as a consultant at the Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester, and consultant gynaecologist to the Royal Household. Mr Dooley said: “I look forward to working with you. Not as a distant symbol, but as a patron who serves, supports, and celebrates your success in an apolitical way. “May Dorset continue to be a county where businesses prosper, where innovation inspires and where our communities flourish in harmony.” Gareth succeeded Tony Brown of Y-not Finance as president. Tony continues on the chamber board as past president. Gareth said: “My commitment as your president is to lead with hope, honesty
and a bit of humour — to be vocal on your behalf, pragmatic in approach, fair in dealing and free of ego.” Newly elected board members were May Palmer, who is managing director of Harry J Palmer Holdings Ltd; Kimberley Davies, who is Partner and Head of Family – Dorset at Trethowans; and Marsham Court Hotel managing director Rosie Radwell. New ambassadors were Jonny Bush from Enhanced, Debbie Smith from Bournemouth and Poole College, Lucy Filer of the TC Group and Kurt Lee from Lester Aldridge. Helen Stacey from Aspire Jobs continues as chair and as a board member. Guests at the Christmas lunch – sponsored by Rathbones – brought along gifts for Cash for Kids’ toy drive collection and entered a raffle which raised £2,400. The charity is dedicated to improving the lives of disadvantaged children and young people across the South Coast. To view photos from the event visit www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/gallery

PRF Composite Materials Launch Pioneering New Product After 2 years of development and over a year of testing, PRF Composite Materials has launched a pioneering new product. Building on PRF’s sustainability philosophy – to look at their prepreg materials from every angle – PRF’s R&D
team have developed RP5365 to virtually eliminate the need for the constructor to have any freezing or refrigeration for this product, whilst still maintaining the curing characteristics of PRF’s standard component prepregs and good mechanical properties for structural applications. The epoxy prepreg system RP5365 is a mid-temperature cure component prepreg system with an out life of 1 year (365 days) at 20°C. Providing the materials are stored in reasonable ambient temperatures, the PRF team also see this prepreg should help reduce or even eliminate the need for refrigerated transportation as well, subject to the maximum temperatures it might be exposed to. The team also envisaged that this material can provide significant benefits for component manufacture in
hotter climates, where standard out life can be very limited and difficult to manage. Robert Burnell, CEO and Head of Product Development at PRF, comments: “We believe that while bio-based materials will play an important role in the future of composites, there is still much more we can do today to improve sustainability using well-established materials—without compromising their high performance. These are changes we can implement immediately to start reducing our environmental impact. By developing a product like RP5365, we can achieve significant environmental benefits, including reduced energy consumption, lower fluorocarbon emissions, and offer overall cost savings for our customers.”

Delivered by local business advisory specialists Evolve and funded by Business Growth Dorset, the Growth Forum is designed to help business leaders tackle challenges, build momentum and develop clear strategies for sustainable growth. Two new cohorts are now open for registration – one tailored for Dorset-based businesses from any sector, and another specifically for those in the engineering and manufacturing sectors. Each forum brings together up to 15 local business owners and leaders for a series of three in-person, peer-led workshops, alongside dedicated one-to-one support and access to specialist business masterclasses. Over the course of the programme, participants will review strategic topics – from refining leadership style and the importance of creating a values-led culture, to harnessing the potential of AI, automation and innovation to drive progress and growth.
David Mutton, Business Advisor at Evolve and programme lead, said: “The Evolve Growth Forum offers a real opportunity for local business owners and leaders to not only discuss their challenges and opportunities, but also to give them the tools and confidence to help grow their businesses, benefitting from the support of others on a similar journey. “The sessions are more than just theory, they are about helping business leaders
to create real changes and look at new opportunities in their business.” The Growth Forum is free to attend and open to SMEs based in the Dorset Council or BCP Council areas. Each cohort is limited to 15 participants. To find out more and register your interest, visit https:// evolveadvisory.co.uk/service/the-evolvegrowth-forum/

International Trade Updates How Temporary Customs Passports Are Becoming Essential for Business and How They’re Going Digital For internationally active businesses, the ability to move goods efficiently across borders is more than a logistical necessity - its a strategic advantage. Whether it’s transporting equipment for trade shows, demonstrating products to prospective clients, sending film crews abroad, or delivering specialist tools for short-term projects, companies increasingly depend on reliable customs processes. One of the most effective tools enabling this is the ATA Carnet, often described as a “passport for goods.” As the global economy evolves, and particularly as digital transformation accelerates, understanding both the traditional and emerging digital Carnet systems is becoming essential. What Is an ATA Carnet? An ATA Carnet is an international customs document that allows the temporary export and import of goods to participating countries without paying duties or taxes. It is valid for 12 months and can be used for multiple trips and multiple destinations, offering a simple and consistent alternative to the range of
customs forms that would otherwise be required. More than 80 countries participate in the scheme, covering commercial samples, professional equipment and goods destined for exhibitions and fairs. Because the system is standardised across participating nations, businesses can avoid complex administrative requirements and benefit from predictable border movements. Why ATA Carnets Are Vital for Business Operations The ATA Carnet system offers several commercial advantages that strengthen international operations. One of the most significant is the cost saving it provides. Without a Carnet, businesses may be required to pay import duties, VAT or temporary bonds when moving goods across borders. For companies transporting high-value equipment, such as specialist machinery, prototypes, or film and broadcast gear, these charges can be substantial. The Carnet removes these costs entirely, helping companies protect their budgets and allocate resources more effectively.
Speed is another major benefit. International events and trade shows depend on tight schedules, and delays at customs can derail even the best-planned projects. Carnets simplify border crossings, reducing the risk of goods being detained or subjected to lengthy inspections. This efficiency allows businesses to maintain operational momentum and meet critical deadlines. Beyond cost and speed, the Carnet system also reduces administrative pressure. Instead of completing multiple customs documents for each country visited, businesses can rely on a single, harmonised document that streamlines the entire process. This simplicity is invaluable for organisations with teams travelling frequently, particularly when they need to move goods in and out of several countries within a short period. The flexibility of the Carnet further enhances its value. Because one document can cover multiple journeys and destinations over a full year, companies can respond quickly to new opportunities abroad without having to repeat lengthy customs preparations.
The ATA Carnet Goes Digital: A New Era of Trade Facilitation As global trade becomes increasingly digital, the ATA Carnet system is also evolving . The introduction of Digital ATA Carnets, marks a significant advancement in international customs facilitation. Pilots are taking place of the digital systems that replace the traditional paper booklet with a fully electronic version accessible via secure online platforms and mobile applications. The digital format unlocks several improvements. It speeds up customs procedures by allowing officials to access and verify Carnet details instantly, reducing processing times and helping eliminate manual errors associated with paper documentation. Businesses also benefit from real-time visibility, as digital Carnets allow users to track where and when their Carnet has been used, which customs points have validated it, and how long the document remains valid. This level of transparency supports stronger compliance and reduces the risk of accidental penalties. Another major advantage is the removal of risks associated with physical documents. Paper Carnets can be lost or damaged during complex multicountry trips, potentially causing delays or financial consequences. Digital Carnets avoid this issue entirely by storing all information securely online. Additionally, administrative tasks such as amendments or corrections can be completed electronically without the need to reissue paper booklets, making the entire process more efficient for both issuing bodies and businesses. Although digital Carnets are still being phased in and are not yet universally accepted, their growing introduction represents a turning point in international trade logistics. Companies that rely heavily on temporary imports and exports are increasingly preparing for the shift by updating internal processes, training staff and monitoring which countries are adopting the digital system. For more information on carnets and the digitalisation of carnets, contact Dorset Chamber at export@dorsetchamber.co.uk

Hall & Woodhouse to Donate £66,000 Following Charity Day Initiative Hall & Woodhouse (H&W) held its annual Charity Day, donating 50% of net sales generated from its Managed House estate to charity. Sales from H&W’s managed pubs resulted in donations
totalling over £9,200 going to each participating pub’s local charity partner. The overall donation was split between several charitable causes across the south, with 25% of sales made at each
pub to be donated directly to its own chosen charity partner. The remaining 25% collated from all of H&W’s managed pubs will be donated to Lewis Manning Hospice Care. Other notable donations include to Dorset Mind, which will receive a donation of over £2,400, and The Lantern Trust, which is to be gifted over £1,860. Richard Curtis, Head of Charity at Hall & Woodhouse, said: “2025 marks our fourth annual Charity Day. Making people’s day and supporting our communities sits at the heart of everything we do; whether through exceptional hospitality for our guests, or ongoing local fundraising efforts across our estate. Charity Day is an initiative that contributes to Hall & Woodhouse’s overall mission to donate and raise £1million per annum for local good causes. In 2024, the Dorset brewer contributed over £800,000 to charitable causes and is on target to beat that figure in 2025. www.hall-woodhouse.co.uk
b4b Marketing Agency Celebrates Dragons’ Den Investment Poole-based digital marketing and software agency, b4b, is celebrating the success of one of its clients after their mobile app, built by b4b’s expert software team, achieved a major milestone by securing an £80,000 investment split between all five Dragons on the BBC’s hit programme Dragon’s Den. Snowball is an innovative mobile app for IoS and Android users designed to make everyday experiences more accessible for people with disabilities – and often described as ‘the Trip Advisor for the disabled community’. Scoped, designed and developed by b4b, the app impressed the Dragons with its cutting-edge functionality and market potential, culminating in a multi-investor deal
that will accelerate the app’s growth and reach. The app provides a unique solution within its industry, and the backing from such esteemed business figures marks a significant milestone in its growth journey. “We are incredibly proud to have played a key role in bringing this project to life,” said Jed Murray, Head of Software at b4b. “Our software team worked tirelessly to develop an intuitive, high-performing mobile application, and to see it receive
recognition from such high profile business leaders is truly rewarding.” b4b collaborated closely with the Snowball team from concept to completion, ensuring the app was built with scalability, usability, and security at its core. The investment will allow the client to enhance the app further, expand its market reach, and take the business to the next level. www.b4b.co.uk
