DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / WELCOME

Hello and, as I speak, a literally very warm welcome to our August magazine. There are a few exciting developments that I’d like to update you on this month. Firstly, I’d like to welcome our newest member of the team, Paul Taylor, leading on business development. Paul will be working with us to welcome new businesses to Dorset Chamber both through membership and the other services we offer to the wider business community. This ranges from events and workshops to peer learning programmes and international trade support. Paul has been a friend of Dorset Chamber for many years and is well known in the business community through his roles at Poole Audi, Volvo and BMW. Welcome on board, Paul! I’ve mentioned before, we are launching a programme, supported by both BCP and Dorset Councils, to help businesses understand and embrace ESG (environmental, social and governance). This will be a series of online events beginning with an introduction to ESG, what this means and why this is so important for businesses. Subsequent sessions will cover key aspects of reducing our carbon footprint in our businesses, why good governance is so critical and CSR within business. All sessions are online, open to all and free to attend. Booking will be necessary and you’ll be able to see all sessions on our website in due course. I’m really keen on showcasing businesses that have taken real steps to reduce their carbon footprint so, if this is you, please get in touch.

I’d also like to mention two forums we are launching: The first is a diversity and inclusivity forum with a view to helping both Dorset Chamber and its members fully embrace the principles and working practices of diversity and equality. Our intention is to meet three times per year and keep abreast of good practice and share this with the business community. We particularly welcome people from minority groups and if you’d like to get involved, please get in touch with me. The other forum is for younger people within the business community, again meeting three times per year. This forum will discuss the issues impacting younger people within the workforce and help inform us on the services we can offer for the next generation of business leaders. Again, if this is of interest, please do get in touch. As I write, we all continue to experience challenging times with the ongoing supply chain issues, huge recruitment challenges and rising prices. Dorset Chamber does its best to support our members and the wider community and if we can help you in any way, please get in touch. Ian Girling Chief Executive Dorset Chamber

Target smashed

in auction for Ukraine

Following the harrowing stories resulting from the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Dorset Chamber wanted to raise money for the DEC Ukraine appeal and the business community wanted to get involved. With the help of Martin Edwards from Julia’s House Hospice, an online auction was

created with a target of £10,000. 50 companies kindly donated a range of 57 prizes which were displayed on the website updated with the current bid. The auction was launched on 4 April, and the bids came in thick and fast, with a massive rush during the last hour on 14 April 2022.

Bid payments and prizes were collected and distributed over the next month and the final total of £11,242 was declared, exceeding the target. It was heartening to see the Dorset business community working together and achieving a superb sum of money for the good of others.

Item: Branded beanie hats and hoodies, thanks to 4Couture Brett Spiller from Chapman Lily Planning

Item: Original A2 print of Old Harry Rocks, taken by Louis P Creative Caron Khan, Dorset Chamber president “I absolutely love this print of our stunning Dorset coastline, and I am so chuffed to have won the bid to purchase this prize. I do hope the funds we have raised with this auction go a little way to helping the people of Ukraine, and I wish that they too can one day enjoy their beautiful country in peace”.

Brett enthusiastically bid on a number of items to support the Ukraine appeal, including Branded Beanies and Hoodies with 4Couture. Brett bid with the intention of gifting them to Purbeck Youth and Community Foundation, a small charity based in Purbeck that offers open access youth clubs and services to young people and the local community. His successful bid will see their dedicated staff kitted out, keeping them warm when doing outreach work and ensuring that they are readily identifiable. Brett said: “Both are causes close to my heart, one international and borne from tragedy and one local and full of hope for the future. Dorset Chamber and 4Couture deserve the real credit for making it happen.”

Item: Dorset Chamber car cleaning services Cas Paton from Onbuy.com

Item: Sunseeker VIP factory tour and hospitality Theresa Higgins from Dorset Chamber “I was lucky enough to be the winning bidder and had a fantastic tour and superb VIP hospitality through their caterers The Rick Stein Group. We had a brilliant day and insight into this amazing Poole business. Huge thanks to all including our wonderful host Bryan Jones and Hendy Group for the VIP transport.”

“Watching the Ukraine crisis unfold in recent months has been devastating. My heart goes out to everyone who has been impacted. “We jumped at the chance to be able to support those affected, and we’re really glad we could donate to such a great cause. Of course, seeing Ian and the team washing an enormous bus was an added bonus. Well done to the Dorset Chamber team for organising this event and for raising an incredible amount of money for such a worthy cause.”

Item: Dell laptop, donated by SPC IT Sarah Powell from Triple Yellow Ltd

Item: Afternoon tea at the Cumberland Hotel Sheena Dayman from YMCA Bournemouth “A winner every time... I took part in the Dorset Chamber auction and secured afternoon tea at The Cumberland Hotel. I was told if you do a good deed, there are no calories. I had a lovely afternoon with my colleague Karen.”

When Sarah Powell won an SPC IT-donated laptop in the Dorset Chamber Ukraine auction she wanted to donate it to a rehoused Ukrainian family. This led her to Vova and Vika, the BCP Hosts and Guests Community group and becoming a committee member. “I just had to! This group is providing vital information for hosts and guests, helping host-to-host connections for mutual support as well as ensuring the Ukrainian people are able to connect, develop friendships and navigate the area”. Their Justgiving Page is raising £500 to fund social gatherings and events for Ukrainian people and their hosts in the area. Donations of laptops, ipads and phones can be made to Connecting Ukrainians with Devices.

CAN YOU HELP? As Russians bombs continue to bombard Ukrainian towns and cities, more Ukrainians are being displaced from their homes. There is a desperate need for families to find homes and safety - imagine if one morning you had to pack a bag and leave your home or risk death. Here in Dorset, many families have opened their homes to Ukrainian families, and a support network has grown to support hosts and their guests. If you are interested in hosting, see website www.resetuk.org/ about/ukraine If you wish to volunteer locally, please contact your local group on www.helpandkindness.co.uk www.sasfihopeross.co.uk more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

Measures for inflation at the highest levels on record The BCC’s Quarterly Economic Survey (QES) for Q2 2022 – the UK’s largest independent survey of business sentiment and a leading indicator of UK GDP growth – shows inflationary pressures continuing to reach levels never previously recorded in its 33-year history, as the vast majority of firms expect further price rises.

Domestic Sales 41% of respondents overall report an increase to domestic sales, slightly down on Q1 2022. Marketing and media firms were most likely to report an increase in domestic sales (51%), while retailers and wholesalers were among the least likely (33%). Investment 25% of respondents overall report an increase to investment in plant, machinery, and technology, compared to 27% in Q1. As measured as a percentage balance, the manufacturing sector stands at +11%, the lowest since Q1 2021. The services sector also stands at +11%, unchanged from the previous quarter. Turnover Just over half (54%) of firms overall expect their turnover to increase over the next twelve months, down from 63% in Q1 2022. As measured as a percentage balance, the manufacturing sector stands at +38%, while the services sector stands at +37%. These are both the lowest figures since Q1 2021. Inflation 65% of respondents overall expect to raise prices, increasing beyond what was already at record highs. As measured as a percentage balance, the manufacturing sector stands at +76%, the highest level on record, while the services sector stands at +59%, again the highest on record. David Bharier, head of Research, British Chambers of Commerce, said: ‘“This quarter’s survey results clearly point to a weakening economic outlook amid unprecedented cost pressures and falling business confidence. Businesses face an unprecedented convergence of cost pressures, with the main drivers coming from raw materials, fuel, utilities, taxes, and labour. The continuing supply chain crisis, exacerbated by conflict in Ukraine and lockdowns in China, has further compounded this. Against this backdrop, it is no surprise that business confidence for the months ahead is waning as we enter a period of heightened economic uncertainty.”

‘No-fault’ evictions to be abolished

President’s Column by Caron Khan

The Conservative’s manifesto proposed to abolish ‘no-fault’ evictions in England. The coronavirus pandemic delayed that promise, but in 2022, the UK government said it is full steam ahead. What are ‘no-fault’ evictions? At the moment the law enables a landlord to take back possession of their property, which is subject to an Assured Shorthold Tenancy Agreement, without having to establish any fault on the part of the tenant. The landlord can give the tenant two months’ notice (subject to satisfying certain requirements) to leave the property at the end of the fixed term. If the tenant refuses to vacate, the landlord can use the court’s ‘accelerated’ procedure to get possession. Creating more certainty for tenants Tenants can feel insecure that their landlord could evict them with only two months’ notice, potentially leaving a family suddenly homeless in a sparse rental market. Landlords are also accused of using the no-fault eviction process as a retaliation tactic against tenants who request repairs be undertaken to the property or challenge rent increases. The government wants to prevent this type of conduct. If you are a tenant with concerns about the security of your tenancy or condition of the property, it is important to seek legal advice now on your options. Landlords need to be ready for the changes Not only are no-fault evictions being abolished but the government is also planning to strengthen and extend the fault-based evictions too, in order to provide more protection to tenants. With years of pandemic restrictions and now a cost of living crisis, many landlords are suffering significant periods of rent arrears caused by tenants struggling to pay; it is no surprise then that these proposed changes are causing uncertainty. If you are a landlord, now is the window of opportunity to seek legal advice on those properties you want to gain back possession before the law changes. Now is also the time to review your current tenancy agreements to perhaps consider adding contractual break-clauses. Professional, expert advice can save time and cost Whether you are a tenant or a landlord, Humphries Kirk can provide practical, expert advice on how the proposed new legislation affects you. Humphries Kirk have offices in Bournemouth, Poole, Cranbourne Chase, Swanage, Wareham, Parkstone, Crewkerne, and Dorchester. www.hklaw.uk

Why diversity and inclusion is vital to your business Diversity and inclusion are essential today—something I have seen firsthand when working with the team at Southampton City of Culture Trust, and something I am very passionate about. Diversity and inclusion allows businesses and organisations to be more inclusive of different ideas, cultures, and lifestyles, leading to an improved company culture. It also puts businesses in the position to recruit the best employees from a diverse and often untapped candidate pool while increasing customer satisfaction with their products and services. I have found that diversity brings together people from different backgrounds, showcases a variety of perspectives and leads to innovation and creativity. When we bring people together from all walks of life—different genders, backgrounds, and races—it’s amazing what we can achieve. Dorset Chamber will be hosting a Diversity and Inclusivity Forum with a view to helping both the chamber and its members fully embrace the principles and working practices of diversity and inclusivity. If you would like to be involved or just want to find out more, please do get in touch with myself or Ian Girling, CEO of Dorset Chamber 11

Local companies unite in support of Ukraine What do a motorbike, a bus, a car and a van have in common? No, this isn’t a joke – they were all contenders for a wash by the Dorset Chamber team. Back in April, the Dorset Chamber set up an online charity auction to raise money to help people fleeing the fighting in wartorn Ukraine. The auction was open to members of the public and all Dorset businesses, whether chamber members or not, with proceeds going to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC). According to the DEC, at least three million people have fled their homes to escape the war in Ukraine and more than 18 million people are expected to be displaced as fighting continues. The team at OnBuy were keen to contribute, so when they saw a full vehicle valet offered by chamber chief executive Ian Girling and his team, they bid £500 to show their support. OnBuy decided to put the vehicle valet to a public vote on social media to make things a little more ‘interesting’. Members of the team volunteered a motorbike, a car (known as ‘Yaris Hilton’) and a van. Eager to involve more local businesses, OnBuy also reached out to Dorset bus operator Morebus to see if they could ‘borrow’ one of their iconic blue buses

to be washed. Morebus were only too happy to get involved to support this great cause. Unsurprisingly, the bus won the vote by a landslide. Morebus driver Bob Ciardini drove one of the buses down to the Dorset Chamber offices where the whole team rallied together with their buckets, sponges and pink gloves.

Cas Paton, founder and CEO of OnBuy, commented: “Watching the Ukraine crisis unfold in recent months has been devastating. My heart goes out to everyone who has been impacted. “We jumped at the chance to be able to support those affected, and we’re really glad we could donate to such a great cause. Of course, seeing Ian and the team washing an enormous bus was an added bonus. Well done to the Dorset Chamber team for organising this event and for raising an incredible amount of money to such a worthy cause.”

The auction raised an amazing £11,242 in total, surpassing the goal of £10,000. The DEC says that: • £30 could provide essential hygiene supplies for three people for one month • £50 could provide blankets for four families • £100 could provide emergency food for two families for one month www.onbuy.com

Paul drives business development An experienced business development professional was so impressed with seeing Dorset Chamber’s team in action that he decided to join them. Paul Taylor spent more than 30 years in the automotive sector across Dorset, with roles at high-end dealerships and running his own business. But he is now in the driving seat at the chamber after becoming its newly appointed business development executive. Paul, who lives in Poole, said: “The chamber team always did a really great job when they hosted events at the various showrooms where I worked over the years. “I was always impressed and built up a strong relationship with the chamber, so when the position came up it was absolutely perfect for me.” Paul added: “Some people still think the chamber is just a member organisation but it is so much more than that. “Having been on the member’s side, I can articulate to businesses just how well the

chamber can help them grow and promote them to the wider community, as well as ensure they know about all of the great benefits which membership brings too. “As a former business owner, I can also understand what they go through too. This is an exciting time to join the chamber and a great opportunity. I’m looking forward to it.” Paul has previously held senior positions in business development at dealerships including Poole Audi, Volvo Cars Poole, BMW & Mini Bournemouth, and Peugeot in both Blandford and Dorchester. He also ran his own automotive business in Weymouth for a number of years. Dorset Chamber is the county’s leading business support organisation with about 700 members representing more than 37,000 employees. It is also the voice of business, championing the business community locally and in the

corridors of power through its accreditation with the British Chambers of Commerce. Dorset Chamber chief executive Ian Girling said: “A very warm welcome to Paul. “He will lead on new business opportunities both within the membership and the wider business community. “Paul has been involved with the chamber for many years and is a tremendous addition to our talented, committed and friendly team. He will fit right in and we’re thrilled to see him join.” Paul’s recruitment comes amid a busy spell for the Dorset Chamber as it recently welcomed law firm Lester Aldridge as a new Premier Business Partner and international audit, tax and advisory firm Mazars as a Platinum Business Partner. www.dorsetchamber.co.uk

Top tips to help stay safe online Why is Internet safety so important? The Internet offers us some fantastic possibilities; however, it comes with risks. These risks include fraud, catfishing, cyberbullying, invasion of privacy, identity theft, and dangers to children from offensive images and sexual predators. There are numerous types of cyber threats online that you should be aware of; we’ve outlined our expert tips on how to stay safe online. Enable privacy settings If you use social media and shop online, you’ll have a lot of personal information on the Internet and need to take measures to remain safe online. Website browsers, and additional software all have privacy settings that can be optimised. Make sure to use all privacy settings available. Practice safe browsing Not all web addresses are safe to visit. To protect yourself, ensure your browser is up-to-date and using the latest versions. You should also install security software and ensure your passwords are strong and diverse. Limit personal information Personal information is a digital commodity that increases the risk of cybercrime, but with social media accounts, it’s nearly impossible not to share. Use a strong password and operating system and limit your personal information online. Set strong passwords Cybercriminals can use software to reveal basic passwords. Set strong passwords and save them to the keychain instead of attempting to remember them. And remember, random passwords are stronger. Watch what you post Posting on social media can influence your reputation in the wider community; it can also put your home at risk of crime and your info at risk of fraud. If you are emotional, don’t post, as this can affect your judgement.

to make sure your anti-virus software is fit-for-purpose and up-to-date.

Other types of phishing are less crafty and will simply ask you to enter personal details.

Use secure sites for online purchases A secure website will have a security certificate that locks the connection and protects your info from being accessed by third parties. It will have an “HTTPS” website address.

Use a VPN when connecting to public Wi-Fi VPN stands for Virtual Private Network, and using one allows you to browse privately and securely.

Be wary of who you meet on the Internet Never divulge too much personal information to someone you met online, and if you take the next step to meet in person, inform your friends and always choose a public place. Ensure your Internet connection is secure Secure your Internet connection to protect account data and passwords. Do this by using different passwords on the computer and the router and keeping software updated. Use a firewall A firewall is a security system for your network that can be programmed to filter incoming and outgoing traffic. You can easily configure a firewall on your desktop device; most operating systems come firewall ready. Be aware of scams Cybercrime is a continuous game of cat and mouse; once the authorities have discovered a scam, the criminals are already trying to outthink them again. It’s worth getting to know the main types of scams (like phishing), but scams have become more sophisticated, so you need to stay vigilant. Phishing scams Phishing is a type of scam that encourages users to click an email or text message link. Once hooked, the software can deploy on your computer and collect valuable data (a form of malware).

Close unused accounts Unused accounts can be used by hackers to build up a picture of your digital persona using any available information. It’s a good idea to shut down your old, unused accounts and websites. Use a password management system Most browsers and operating systems have a password management system. However, having your own platform to generate complex passwords, retrieve them, and store them in an encrypted database is more secure. Always create complex passwords with special characters that will be hard for hackers to guess. How do you explain Internet safety to a child? Open a conversation with your children about Internet security, and ensure they understand the risks. What should I look for when purchasing Internet security software? These days, we need Internet security software to protect our computers and devices from online dangers. Unless you have Internet security software, there is nothing to stop cybercriminals from sending phishing scams and malware. When buying Internet security software, consider the price against the features; in general, you get what you pay for. www.eset.com/uk

Be wary of what you download Regardless of device, exercise caution with what you download, as you could be downloading malware that can access your personal details. Security software helps to screen digital downloads. Keep anti-virus software up-to-date An anti-virus software is one of the best defences against malware and digital viruses. Since malware and viruses are always evolving, you need more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

After starting college together, they soon moved to distance learning, with limited access to college or a tutor for the remainder of their qualification, but all managed to pass their qualifications with flying colours. Stephanie VaughanMason, wellbeing and training manager at Diverse Abilities, said: “I am so proud of everyone who has completed their qualifications during such a difficult time. Not only have they had to adapt to new ways of learning, but they have done it whilst supporting the most vulnerable people in the /company/dorset-chamber/

community during the pandemic.” Diverse Abilities offers a range of training opportunities. All staff complete mandatory, paid-for introductory training to get them ready to fulfil their role in areas such as safeguarding, moving and assisting, and medication training. Staff are also offered opportunities to enhance their career with further qualifications and training throughout their time with the organisation. Michelle Turner, supported living deputy manager, who completed Level 3 in Health and Social Care, said: “It was fantastic to be able to complete my qualification, despite it not being quite how I imagined during the pandemic. I moved into a new department during Covid-19, so completing my Health and Social Care Level 3 has enabled me to put a lot of the theory into practice. I am so proud of everyone who has managed to complete their qualification in these difficult times and the fantastic support we were given”. www.diverseabilities.org.uk

Chartered planning apprentice at Savills Savills planner Alice Higgitt has become one of the first chartered planning apprentices in the country.

Alice Higgitt, chartered town planner apprentice at Savills

Alice attended London South Bank University (LSBU), the first institution in the country to offer a chartered Masters in Planning and Urban Design. Savills was part of the trailblazer group who helped design and launch the planning apprenticeship in collaboration with RTPI. Trailblazer groups help develop a new apprenticeship for an occupation. At Savills, Alice sits within the mixeduse planning team where she works on projects encompassing regeneration and development including smaller householder development. She was mentored throughout the process by Chris Brady, associate director at Savills. Alice joined Savills in 2019 as a graduate planner after completing an undergraduate Geography degree at the University of the West of England. The MA apprenticeship involved four days in the office and a fifth day studying – at first in person and then, once Covid hit, remotely. Alice completed her studies with LSBU in December and received her chartership in July. She will be graduating with a distinction in the autumn. Savills currently has over 100 apprentices across the business. Alice said: “It was great to be able to complete my studies alongside work and I was grateful to have a supportive team who

all have years of planning experience. The course was really interesting and relevant for planning – it was an engaging way to learn as you can apply your studies directly to the projects you’re working on at the time. “Savills has an internal apprenticeship team who help you from day one of your apprenticeship all the way through to the day you receive confirmation of being elected as a chartered member. The whole team has been amazing and worked together with the university and the RTPI to solve any issues along the way but also to provide support where required. This level of support is something that I think employees at Savills on this route really benefit from.” David Jackson, head of Planning at Savills, commented: “‘Being chartered is the gold standard of planning practice. The apprenticeship route has opened a new path to chartership, contributing to greater diversity within the profession. Savills worked alongside the RTPI to define the apprenticeship pathway and we are delighted now to see it reach fruition in this way. We now look forward to supporting future chartered planning apprentices and growing the profession further.”

Industrial demand drives investment interest

Ben Duly, Senior Surveyor at Vail Williams

26

August 2022 | Dorset Business Focus

Occupational demand for industrial, warehouse and trade counter units across the central south coast remains strong. As a result, there is a good level of interest from industrial investors prepared to pay strong prices for the best assets. Investment agent Ben Duly, who recently joined Vail Williams and is responsible for marketing multi-sector investment property across the Dorset and wider south coast region, discusses. Industrial investment yields are as strong as they have ever been, fuelled by a prolonged period of low interest rates and the historic imbalance between supply and demand which has driven rental growth. Over the last 12 months, industrial deals accounted for 26 per cent of all investment transactions in the UK by value, and almost a third (30 per cent) by volume. However, most transactions in Dorset were in the sub-£10m range – symptomatic of the smaller scale of the industrial estates located here. Indeed, with the rise in demand from owner occupiers, we have seen many of the larger estates broken up into smaller investments, /company/dorset-chamber/

creating pent up demand for larger industrial estates under single ownership. To date, investors have factored in future rental growth and have been alert to the potential growth of this market, which has reflected similar rental growth patterns experienced elsewhere. However, we could see rental growth start to plateau as running costs increase and we are still monitoring the real impact of the recent interest rate hikes on commercial investment appetite. Notwithstanding this, demand for industrial, warehouse and trade counters remains high in Dorset. This, together with the region’s connectivity via the A31 trunk road and major infrastructure improvements at the Ringwood roundabout, reinforces the region’s industrial offer to manufacturing, distribution, logistics and e-commerce businesses and, by extension, industrial property investors. Vail Williams is currently marketing a range of industrial properties throughout Dorset. Get in touch for more information. www.vailwilliams.com

education with Weymouth College

The last six months have seen a definite growth in the number of apprenticeships being offered by employers across Dorset with availability in an increasing range of employment and geographical areas within the county. The trade sectors – in particular engineering – have had a difficult two years but we are seeing evidence of a strong recovery now in terms of live apprenticeship opportunities within these sectors. Although current government incentives may have a part to play, the uplift is, importantly, due to a building awareness that apprenticeships are a strong and reliable recruitment pathway for both local industry and those starting their working career. To continue to support the apprenticeship pathway moving forward, from August 2022, the government is making some improvements to the apprenticeship training system. • Making sure all apprentices receive the same amount of on-the-job training • Making it easier for people to complete apprenticeships more quickly • Removing the requirement for thousands of apprentices to have to take Level 2 English and maths tests – although apprentices will still need to upskill and attend English and maths classes The industry-led growth in apprenticeships we are currently seeing has been supported by a marked increase in interest in the pathway from potential apprentices. More and more young people are looking at an apprenticeship as a next step and UCAS has reported that almost half of students setting up a UCAS account over the last six months have noted an interest in apprenticeships – up 123 per cent on the previous year*. And it is not only school leavers who are showing more confidence in applying – those aged 25 plus are increasingly looking to the pathway to upskill within the workplace or change career direction. So, is it too late to look at taking on a new apprentice or upskilling an employee this summer? Talk to us today and find out more about how our apprenticeship team can work with you to complete an organisational needs analysis and start the search for your first – or next – apprentice. *John Cope, Director of Strategy, Policy & Public Affairs, UCAS February 2022 www.weymouth.ac.uk/employerservices

Lighthouse ready for a refresh after ‘transformative’ period What’s happening at Lighthouse? Lighthouse has enjoyed a bumper nine months, welcoming close to 200,000 customers to shows and screenings since the lifting of Covid restrictions in September enabled performances to full houses once again. Now, it’s time for a refresh. They began with the monumental task of removing all the signs on the outside of the building in preparation for a new coat of paint. Inside, with no performances in August, the public areas will be repainted, with new signs and messaging prepared for the start of the autumn season in September. “Coming out of the pandemic has been a transformative experience for Lighthouse,” explains chief executive Elspeth McBain. “The response of our audiences who have returned in such numbers has been both wonderful and incredibly humbling, highlighting the important part Lighthouse plays in their lives and our community.

“It’s a responsibility we take very seriously but being unable to welcome the public to performances for such a long time in lockdown also gave us an opportunity to strengthen our relationships with artists and makers, from producing our own Christmas shows and online content to launching the Sanctuary artists’ residency programme and Lighthouse Playwriting Prize. Most recently, we hosted the first ever Dorset Artists Festival. “After a really busy season with hundreds of thousands of people coming into our venues, we are refreshing our iconic building over the summer. The building will be closed to the public in August while we undertake the maintenance work required. No two days are ever the same at Lighthouse and we are looking forward to welcoming audiences back with a typically entertaining and diverse programme this autumn.”

REIDsteel flying high with hangar awards nomination A ‘super-hanger’ built by Christchurch firm John Reid & Sons (Strucsteel) Ltd has won through to the finals of prestigious national awards. Its development of the UK’s largest dual cantilever hanger at London Biggin Hill Airport has been shortlisted for the 2022 Structural Steel Design Awards (SSDA). The landmark facility, built with architect and main contractor Civils Contracting Ltd, beat more than 300 entries to become a finalist in the annual competition organised by the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA). For occupation by aerospace giant Bombardier, the hangar has been rated alongside such ‘blue-chip’ projects as the Lord’s Cricket Ground development, the Tower of Light in Manchester and the 22 Bishopsgate skyscraper in the City of London. John Reid & Sons (Strucsteel) Ltd – known as REIDsteel – provided the design, drawing, fabrication and installation of the complete steel frame, electrically operated hangar doors and underslung cranes, as well as the floor decking, cladding and glazing elements. Simon Boyd, managing director at REIDsteel, said: “It is tremendous to see the Biggin Hill hangar on the prestigious SSDA shortlist. “It is testament to innovation, ambition and talent of all involved in a ‘one team’ approach to developing a project of such scale and complexity. “As the most advanced and largest dual cantilever hanger in the UK, it sets the benchmark for the highest quality maintenance facilities in aviation today.

“Biggin Hill Airport, Civils Contracting, Bombardier and the team at REIDsteel must all be congratulated for playing their part in winning this recognition. Now we’re looking forward to the awards night in September.” The super-hangar is REIDsteel’s 11th at the airport and will be used by Bombardier for the maintenance, repair and overhaul of aircraft. It includes offices and a VIP lounge. Its 45m cantilever trusses allow the hangar to have two 160m clear span entrances and two vast floor spaces of 77,500 sq ft (7,200 sq m) each unobstructed by supporting columns. REIDsteel’s entry included details about the hanger’s innovative design and value engineering which created significant reductions in steel use and a reduced carbon footprint compared with alternatives. The company is one of just two on the awards shortlist to perform both the structural design and steelwork fabrication for a project. REIDsteel is among 21 finalists for the

54th annual awards by the BCSA, the structural steel industry’s trade body. The winners will be announced at a reception in London on 29 September. REIDsteel designs, engineers, manufactures and erects steel-framed structures of all kinds plus cladding, glazing and doors. It provides a ‘conception to completion service’ as well as value-engineering to find the most cost-effective solutions for a project. Its portfolio includes aircraft hangars, bridges, sports stadia, and industrial and commercial buildings across the UK, Europe and the world, alongside its special projects – which include hurricane and earthquake resistant structures, car parks, defence structures, water treatment plants, the power sector, infrastructure, specialist bridges and bespoke designs. www.reidsteel.com

TDSi gains Cyber Essentials Certification Poole-based TDSi has announced that it has achieved Cyber Essentials Certification which demonstrates the company’s dedication to fully securing its operations as well as its products and services. Backed by the UK government through the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), Cyber Essentials helps any size or type of organisation to protect itself and those that rely on it from a range of common and potentially dangerous cyber-attacks. Alex Rumsey, sales director at TDSi said: “Certification by Cyber Essentials provides further assurance to our customers and partners that TDSi’s IT infrastructure meets the strictest industry standards. Although this is relevant for every organisation that we work with, it is particularly important for our strategic governmental and public sector customers, where a clear audit trail of cybersecurity is essential. We are proud to share our certification and to add further peace of mind that, as a security manufacturer, our own systems are just as secure as those that we produce and sell.” TDSi completed the certification via an assessment by IASME Consortium Ltd, a process that involved demonstrating the cyber security of its whole IT infrastructure including onsite systems, Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) elements, cloudbased systems, and externally managed IT services, along with appropriate password management, malware protection, and

security updates management. Alex added: “The certification process is designed to assess every facet of your IT infrastructure, from the devices you use for daily communications right through to servers and your core IT systems. No part of your IT infrastructure is fully safe and secure unless all of it is, so the certification process is necessarily thorough to ensure the business has full confidence in its systems before sharing them with all other stakeholders.” Cyber Essentials Certification delivers quantifiable proof that an organisation is upholding the necessary standards to operate safely in a cyber world, as Alex concluded: “Naturally we already knew our IT infrastructure and practices were up to scratch, but we wanted the extra third-party assurance that Cyber Essentials Certification demonstrates to the rest of the world. We are living in an age where cyber security is just as vital as physical security, so we are delighted to demonstrate that TDSi is completely dependable as a top tier security company which practises what it preaches.” Now that Cyber Essentials Certification has been approved, TDSi plans to complete Cyber Essentials Plus Certification later in 2022. This enhanced level certification is designed to meet more stringent criteria along with an in-person technical audit conducted by an independent assessor. www.tdsi.co.uk

After well over eighteen months of speculation, we have the first case of an Employment Tribunal finding that an individual suffering the effects of so-called ‘long Covid’ is capable of meeting the definition of disability for the purposes of the Equality Act. In Burke v Turning Point Scotland, the claimant’s nine-month absence from work was the reason for their dismissal. Mr Burke claimed to be suffering from fatigue as a result of long Covid. After engaging with an occupational health professional and being told that the claimant was ‘unlikely’ to meet the definition of disabled under the Equality Act, the respondent took steps towards dismissal. The judge had to decide whether or not the claimant’s own evidence was credible as the medical evidence was both broad and, at times, contradictory. Ultimately, the judge was satisfied that the evidence was credible and was partly swayed by the fact that the claimant ended up unemployed after June 2021 and not on benefits. As well as this, the claimant had been keen and taken steps to try and return to work but was medically unable to do so. There was no benefit to the claimant in exaggerating his symptoms. Although this was only a preliminary hearing, and the respondent may still be found to have made a fair dismissal, this case does still have some takeaways. Long covid may amount to a disability. This is not a case determining that everyone with symptoms will be disabled. Cases will always be judged on their own merits, but the facts set out in this case will prove helpful in future decisions. Occupational health and GPs are not the final arbiter of whether an individual meets the Equality Act test. This is a legal question for the tribunal to decide. 01202 499255 cdobbs@frettens.co.uk www.frettens.co.uk

recruitment

with Mploy Staffing Solutions

Candidate market and demand for staff In the post-Brexit, postpandemic market that’s now also heavily impacted by Russia’s invasion in Ukraine, what’s the most recent picture of the labour market in the UK and in the South West? According to the most recent survey by KPMG and REC, the demand for permanent and temporary staff continues to be strong with further recorded rises in the figures. However, it is becoming increasingly difficult to recruit due to an ongoing downturn in staff availability. Low unemployment levels impact permanent and temporary recruitment. The demand for staff is much greater than availability, resulting in ongoing pressure for increases to starting salaries and hourly pay rates. According to the survey in May, the South West region saw the sharpest reductions in staff availability for permanent and temporary vacancies in the whole of the UK. Despite this, the South West reported one of the lowest increases in weekly wages for staff in the first quarter of 2022 at 0.3 per cent compared to the UK average of 3.3 per cent and 9.4 per cent in the East of England. This may pose a question whether the region is doing enough to attract workers from other areas of the country for their demands. However, this may perhaps be an indicator of the seasonality of the South West businesses which saw sharp increase in wages in the middle half of 2021. Does this mean that further increases will be needed to meet demands for the busy Christmas season? Adding to these facts, according to the Office for National Statistics, the employment level for February to April 2022 was at 75.6 per cent with unemployment at 3.8 per cent and economic inactivity at a staggering 21.3 per cent. It is going to be an interesting six months ahead and staff levels are going to require very careful planning. MSP Capital in new Cherries partnership Property finance lender MSP Capital is to continue its partnership with AFC Bournemouth for the 2022/23 Premier League season. The Poole-based company, which was front-of-shirt sponsor for the football club’s two most recent seasons in the Sky Bet Championship, has a new agreement that will see it continue to provide important support to the Cherries and their supporters. The MSP Capital logo will once again be prominent in the first team environment, adorning the front of the men’s training wear, including staff training wear and the matchday warm-up range. And the firm will have an increased presence across the entire club by appearing on the sleeve of the women’s team’s shirts and becoming an official partner of AFC Business, the Cherries’ popular business club. MSP Capital used its previous partnership with AFC Bournemouth to make an impact in the local community, notably through the Bring Your Boots drive and the Goals Recreated campaign with former Cherries frontman Arnaut Danjuma. As part of the new affiliation, MSP Capital will collaborate with the club on more exciting new community initiatives across the 2022/23 season. AFC Bournemouth commercial director Rob Mitchell said: “It was a pleasure to be partnered with MSP Capital during our two years in the Championship and we’re delighted to continue that relationship. “We’re pleased to offer MSP assistance with their company goals of supporting growth and visibility for their specific target markets. /company/dorset-chamber/

“It’s also great for us to have continued support from a successful locally-based business who are passionate about the club, and we look forward to the next step of our journey in the Premier League.” Adam Tovey, MSP Capital’s valuation director and a Cherries supporter since boyhood, said: “It was an especially proud moment when we became principal partner and front-of-shirt sponsor back in 2020. “That enabled us to be on the front of the club’s shirt for one of the most significant achievements in its history last season, winning promotion back to the Premier League. “But, in truth, the ties that bind us have always been about more than the shirt. “We share the same passion for social responsibility and are proud to continue to leverage our relationship to help the communities where, together, we are established and draw our strengths. “That includes making sport and physical activity more accessible. “Now is the opportunity for a global business to take the front-of-shirt opportunity in the Premier League, with our focus as a company being on our region. “We’re excited that this new partnership will continue to help us achieve our business aims locally and we look forward to providing supporters with some exciting initiatives across the season.” www.mspcapital.co.uk

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS

The importance of updating your will regularly Which? magazine estimates that as many as 60 per cent of adults in the UK do not have a valid will in place. Research from Solicitors for the Elderly highlights that 47 per cent of people haven’t updated their will in over five years. This means that nearly half of wills in the UK are out of date and over half of the population do not have a will at all.

Making a will is one of the most important yet underutilised estate planning tools that everyone should have in place, even if a person does not consider that they have any possessions or money to give. Below are some of the risks to those who have not made a will: • If a person dies without having made a will then the distribution of their estate will be dictated by a certain set of legal rules, known as the intestacy rules. These rules may not reflect how the assets are wished to be distributed upon death. Parliament could also change these rules at any time, without notice. • If a couple are not married or have not entered into a registered civil partnership, when one dies, the surviving partner will receive nothing, potentially leading to significant financial hardship. • If spouses or civil partners are separating and one should die during that process then, unless a will has been made directing otherwise, the majority of the deceased’s estate will transfer to their spouse or civil partner. • A will can indicate those persons that should become guardians of any minor children to prevent arguments between the family should both parents die. • If you have significant assets then not having a will in place could lead to an unnecessary inheritance tax burden. Instructing a suitably qualified professional to provide advice also gives the opportunity to consider other important areas: • If there are life policies or death in service benefits, are the proper instructions held with the providers of those policies? This could include writing these policies into trust to make them immediately available on death and, potentially, save tax.

•

Likewise, have accurate wishes been communicated to pension providers so that it is clear what happens to those pension benefits upon death?

•

Is there planning that should be considered during lifetime, rather than waiting until death, when it is too late?

•

Are there vulnerable beneficiaries or beneficiaries to whom it would be best that they do not receive significant assets at this stage in their lives? If so, their ‘entitlement’ could be held in trust for their benefit but with suitable controls as to when they can access their inheritance.

•

Are there any specific funeral wishes that executors need to be made aware of?

•

If a chosen beneficiary or beneficiaries die, then who will receive their entitlement instead?

Any person can advise on the making of a will, but mistakes can prove costly, delay the administration of an estate and cause rifts between loved ones. Ideally, therefore, a solicitor or other suitably qualified professional should always be instructed. Ideally, they should be a member of Solicitors for the Elderly and/or a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. A solicitor should always be instructed where circumstances are anything but straightforward. This might include, where: •

An estate is potentially liable to inheritance tax

•

There are overseas assets

•

The person making the will does not live in the UK full time, or their spouse or civil partner does not

•

There are vulnerable beneficiaries

•

There is the potential for someone to challenge the will

•

There are business or agricultural assets

•

There are shared assets with persons who are not married or have not entered into a registered civil partnership

Why protection insurance makes sound business sense As local financial expert Peter Harding explains, most people will insure their car, their phone, their holiday and their house, yet surprisingly few business owners take out the necessary protections to guard against the worst happening. Having the right insurance policies in place can save you and your family enormous amounts of stress – and money – if things don’t work out as planned for your company. Here’s five key protections to consider: 1. Shareholder protection: Also known as business succession planning protection, this ensures other owners of the business (the shareholders) can keep control of the company if one of them dies or is seriously ill. 2. Business loan protection: Most businesses have some form of debt, especially in the wake of the challenges posed by Covid-19, so it makes sense to put a policy in place that helps meet any outstanding financial commitments should you become critically ill or die. 3. Key-person protection: This recognises key people in the company and the impact on profits if one of them becomes ill or dies. A key person can be anyone who can be justifiably described as integral to the business. 4. Relevant life insurance: This is a tax-efficient form of life insurance taken out by the company for an employee, which pays a lump sum to the employee’s family if the person covered dies or is diagnosed with a terminal illness. 5. Group schemes: By introducing employee benefits such as income protection, critical illness cover and private medical insurance, you support the financial wellbeing of employees as well as the business itself. It’s easy to shrug off the need for protection by thinking you’re unlikely to suffer from adverse events – or believing that if you do, your personal savings or cash in the company will cover it. This is a dangerous and costly attitude so it’s important to take action. Can I leave work if it’s too hot? Employment lawyers in the south have warned that there is no maximum temperature at which staff can demand to go home because it is too hot. Regional law firm Ellis Jones Solicitors explained that it is a popular myth that work can stop once the mercury hits a certain number – although temperatures must be at a ‘reasonable’ level. The explanation of UK laws and employee rights has been sparked as the recent British heatwave sizzled in temperatures which soared above parts of the Mediterranean and Caribbean. Kate Brooks, a partner and head of Employment at Ellis Jones, said:

“How hot is too hot? That is the question as people begin to ask at what temperature it is too warm to work. “However, it is a myth that such a figure exists and ultimately it is up to the employer to decide whether the workplace temperature is suitable for workers.” According to Workplace Regulations of 1992 employers have a responsibility to ensure that conditions are ‘reasonable’ for workers in offices and similar environments although there is no

Kate Brooks, Partner & Head of Employment at Ellis Jones

stated temperature threshold. Employers are required to keep the ‘temperature at a comfortable level’ and provide ‘clean and fresh air’. Employees are urged to talk to their managers if the workplace temperature is uncomfortable, according to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Kate said: “Responsible employers will understand their duty of care and take measures to mitigate high temperatures both for the benefit of their people and business continuity. “Of course, there are nuances. For example, some employees will have higher heat thresholds or may have underlying health conditions while some roles may be affected more than others. “Employers will also need to check on staff working from home and may need to provide fans, blinds or take other measures to support them. “Ultimately, much comes down to common sense and employers following health and safety at work law but also listening to staff when they raise concerns and taking any reasonable steps.” According to the HSE a legally binding maximum temperature cannot be set because of the conditions present in certain settings, such as factories and foundries, where it is possible to work safely provided appropriate controls are present. www.ellisjones.co.uk

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / HEALTH & WELLBEING

Why nature connection is vital to our mental health and wellbeing Xanthe Grace, Dorset Chamber’s Health and Wellbeing coordinator has been organising ‘Connecting in Nature’ walks since the beginning of the year. They are proving to be very popular, as feedback suggests that people enjoy them as an opportunity to network, as well as start the day in a positive manner. Another benefit of attending is it provides an opportunity to chat to one of the chamber’s GU6 Champions who are all Mental Health First Aid trained. There is at least one champion in attendance at every walk. After a summer break, the walks will resume at Upton Country Park on 9 September, followed by 7 October at Hengistbury Head. Ongoing research into the benefits of connecting with nature adds weight to ensuring it becomes part of a daily routine. The National Trust and the Wildlife Trust have teamed up with the Mental Health Foundation to create the Nature Connectedness

Research Group. The research has found that a closer connection with nature can boost the wellbeing of people. This challenges current models of wellbeing and has important implications for future policy. Why connection with nature matters Nature connectedness refers to the way we relate to and experience nature. A strong connection with nature means feeling a close relationship or an emotional attachment to our natural surroundings. People who connect with nature, rather than having contact with it, have a greater sense of fulfilment. The research found that it was nearly four times greater than the increase associated with higher socio-economic status. Simply noticing ‘the good things in nature’ brings sustained benefits to mental wellbeing, with clinically significant improvements for people with common mental health problems. Wider research across 18 countries shows that, in the UK, we visit nature much less than people in other countries. Actions for a new relationship with nature The research shows that when people have higher engagement with green spaces, it fosters greater wellbeing. However, in order to build this relationship, policies are needed that enable people to make this connection. To have the greatest impact, it should not be a part-time role in wellbeing, with occasional access and visits to nature, but should build a new relationship by creating an environment that fosters pathways to nature connectedness. There are two key components to connecting: quality and quantity. Firstly, try to get into nature regularly, daily if at all possible, for the best results. Secondly, once you are in nature, ensure you fully take in your surroundings. Be aware of the world around you and savour the moment. Listen to birdsong, smell wildflowers or watch the breeze blowing through the trees. Whilst doing this notice your emotions, and this will help you develop a closer relationship with nature. Once you have developed a routine, you can power up your experience by connecting with others whilst out walking in nature. It is very rewarding to take part in a community that fosters nature. Regularly exercising in nature, be it walking, running or cycling, can bring greater benefits than exercising elsewhere. Rediscover your childhood wonder for nature, be curious and open-minded, learn that people are part of the wider natural world and nature matters for human health.

Barriers Unfortunately, barriers preventing people from regularly connecting with nature still exist, however there are ways that governments and policy makers can ensure that it is made easier. • Foster a culture of connecting with nature from arts policy that celebrates nature, to nature connectedness being recommended by medical practitioners as a standard metric for one’s wellbeing • Ensure that recovery networks use it as one of the tools to aid long-term recovery • Design urban spaces around the pathways to nature connectedness, to prompt people to notice, engage and care for nature • Have it fostered in school from early years onwards, so it becomes part of daily life and a prelude to building a lifelong relationship with nature. Address the teenage dip by bringing nature into secondary schools and ensure that as they enter adulthood they understand the value of nature for in one’s wellbeing • People living with a disability or health condition often face particular barriers to access, due to a lack of accessible routes. Therefore it is important to ensure that agencies have contact with those struggling and offer access to nature as a matter of course • High quality urban parks, designed with accessibility in mind, can enable more people to enjoy and connect with nature, as well as planting flowers and trees along our streets and creating green corridors Conclusion The key message is to stress why it is so vital to focus on how people can tune in and connect with everyday nature close to home through simple activities. Making this as easy as possible for the vast majority of the population means that many have this simple, valuable tool at their disposal and the benefits to everyone’s mental health and overall physical wellbeing are enormous. Hendy Group reviews new SUV-inspired Toyota Aygo X The Toyota Aygo has had a makeover. The fan-favourite Aygo heads in a new direction with a brand-new SUV-inspired exterior design and a bunch of new tech – say hello to the Aygo X (X pronounced ‘cross’). Now the question is: has it got the X-factor? Build-wise, it’s a bit longer than the Aygo, but still compact and a nice size for city driving. There’s definitely a sense of fun in the design, as seen in the twotone paint finish and emphasised wheel arch trims. This must be the ‘daring and spice’ Toyota designers wanted to bring to Europe’s compact car market.

Within the Aygo X contemporary design, you’ll find a whole host of nice tech available as you move up the trim levels – including a touchscreen infotainment system, wireless phone charger, LED headlights, smart entry and start, intelligent clearance sonars with auto brake, and heated front seats. And if you’re keen to get your hands on it, the new Toyota Aygo X is currently available at Hendy to test drive. Verdict: X marks the spot if you’re searching for a compact and agile car. Prices start from £15,405, so it’s pretty affordable, but that may be due to the lack of hybrid engine. In its place, however, is a 1.0-litre

three-cylinder petrol engine – perfect for daily errands and city driving. The modern design is certainly appealing, and the variety of advanced tech makes it a very valid contender in its category. Definitely add this one to your shortlist if you’re in the market for a new nippy city car. www.hendy.co.uk

receive consistent, effective, high-quality training with as little bureaucracy as possible. Additionally, the recent pandemic highlighted the importance of providing digitised training to support remote working, however there are other reasons training is important: • The need for knowledgeable leaders to continue to drive change and continuously improve, acquiring new skills to manage the ‘new business as usual’

•

The need for motivated and engaged staff to ensure retention by providing them with relevant training for their role as well as supporting their career development
