A new Mayor for Ferndown On Monday 13 May 2019, Town Councillors and members of the community came together to see Cllr Julie Robinson unanimously elected as the 38th Town Mayor of Ferndown. This will be her second term as Mayor having served in the role in 2015/16. The Mayor said, “I am delighted to have been elected as Town Mayor for a second time – it is a great honour”. She announced that her charity for her mayoral year will be Macmillan Caring Locally. Julie was born in Bedfordshire and moved to this area in 1986 when she bought a newsagent in Charminster, commuting daily from her home in Ferndown. The business ran successfully for four years after which she took time out to raise a family. After canvassing her local area, she was elected to the Town Council in May 2011, her ambition to get the local community to be more involved, to have their say and to be listened to. She served on the Heatherlands Community Association for 8 years and held the role of Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator for 12 years. She became a Town Councillor in 2011 and was re-elected in May 2015 and was elected as a District Councillor for Ferndown Central Ward. She is now a Dorset County Councillor and is aiming

to build strong relationships within Dorset Council. Julie is also a staunch supporter of providing affordable and social housing.

She hopes to encourage the town’s small businesses and encourage others to come to the area. Photo courtesy of Tom Scrase

New Councillor Mandy Willis Mandy Willis representing the Hampreston & Longham Ward. Mandy was born and raised in Parkstone and spent much of her career working in the insurance industry before moving into mobile telecommunications. She moved to Longham with her husband four years ago and became heavily involved in campaigning on local issues including the speed and volume of traffic on our local roads. 4

She is passionate about the natural world and enjoys cycling and walking. She feels we are so lucky to live here, from our green spaces, to our historic buildings, our wildlife and of course our beautiful river, lakes and countryside walks. Protecting and enhancing all this is important to Mandy. Mandy wholeheartedly supports the residents of Hampreston and Longham in their quest to reduce the

Ferndown’s Civic Day

The Mayor of Ferndown for 2018/19, Cllr Mrs Jean Read, held her Civic Day in April and despite the April showers, civic dignitaries across Dorset had an exceptional day visiting a number of the wonderful assets Ferndown has to its name. With wellies and umbrellas at the ready, the day began with a visit to High Mead Farm, a therapeutic farm located along Ham Lane for those with learning and physical disabilities, mental health issues and for disengaged youngsters. As always, the guests were given a warm welcome by the volunteers at the farm and informed about all the different projects underway. The ‘Chain Gang’ then moved on to Ferndown Industrial Estate, one of Dorset’s Business Improvement Districts (BID). It is the largest industrial estate in Dorset and is home to 450 businesses. The dignitaries were lucky enough to be invited to Caterpillar Marine Power UK Ltd and given a tour of its exceptional facilities at Cobham Road. Following lunch to recharge the batteries,

the dignitaries took their positions back on the coach for the last visit of the day to Ferndown Youth Centre, known as Riffs. Ferndown Town Council took over the management of the centre in 2017 from Dorset Council to ensure that the young people in the town still had access to vital services. The dignitaries were told all about the different activities and support available by young people who use the youth centre and the positive impact it has had on their lives.

What a fantastic Saturday for our annual Fete on the Field in Ferndown The weather was in our favour and we even heard mention of the fete on Radio 2 earlier in the morning. There was a great atmosphere with loads of people enjoying the many activities taking place throughout the day. The morning started at the bandstand with the Town Crier introducing the Mayor, Mrs Julie Robinson who welcomed everyone to the event then moved to the King George V entrance to start the 5k and 10k races. At the bandstand we were entertained by the Ferndown schools – samba, choir and band, and in the afternoon by Chubby the Magician. There was plenty to see whilst walking round the many stalls from Plastic Free Ferndown, local Bus Stop Club charity, Mickey and Minnie Mouse and Storm troopers to name a few, the various displays of jitsu, birds of prey and not forgetting the John Thornton pram race in the afternoon. There was a dog show, car show and flying displays to be seen at intervals throughout the day. This year the fun fair was available from Friday night through to Sunday with many rides to choose from. A big thanks go to the people of Ferndown and surrounding areas who came, enjoyed and supported our summer fete this year. With the organisational skills of the Rotary Club and all the enthusiastic volunteers who gave of their time and energy, and support from the Ferndown Chamber of Commerce and Ferndown Town Council, the day was a great success.

The Salute was carried out by Wing Commander Les Blackburne OBE and the Bournemouth Youth Marching Band performed outside St. Mary’s Church. Various cadet groups joined in the procession and attended the service to recognise the sacrifice, commitment and bravery of the military forces who took part in the D-Day Landings during World War Two.

Getting Outside

Did you know that spending time in nature can help you become physically active, reduce your blood pressure, boost your mood, and increase your vitamin D levels? Living in Ferndown gives us many opportunities to get outside – from taking a walk or cycling in the surrounding countryside or visiting our local park (King George V); playing and exploring outdoors or spending time gardening at home. Most of us have access to some form of natural space either on our own, or with family and friends, and it’s largely free. Try the Castleman Trailway which is one of Dorset’s gentlest way-marked, walking, cycling and horse-riding routes. It is 16.5 miles long and can be accessed at various points from the

edge of Ferndown, one being near the end of Ameysford Road towards the police station. There are the Longham Lakes behind Haskins Garden Centre - a set of lakes with beautiful views worth seeing. The paths around the lakes are flat and there are places to stop, sit and enjoy the views. Also, behind ‘The Centre’ on the Heatherlands Estate there are many walking trails on heathland which give you a sense of space and freedom. Equally behind the Ferndown Schools there is more heathland walking available to meander around at your leisure. So why not get outside this summer after the school pick up run, early evening after work, or at home in the garden. It is likely to boost your health, fitness and mood.

Two Great Causes – One great walk The Ferndown Memory & Poppy Walk took place on Sunday 14th April Dementia Friendly Ferndown and the Ferndown Royal British Legion joined together for a Ferndown walk to support two great causes, Dementia awareness and the Poppy Appeal. To cater for all ages and abilities, there were two circular walks starting from the Royal British Legion in Church Road. The first, a short 1 kilometre through Ferndown Town Centre with the longer 5 kilometre route returning across Ferndown Common. The walks were open to all ages, families, children, pushchairs and dogs taking their owners for a Sunday run and even four intrepid Fernhill residents in wheelchairs made it all the way round. A great thank you to everyone who took part and to the helpers on the roads and at the Legion.

PROPOSED WORKS

on Ringwood Road, Longham Oct 2019

To carry out maintenance work, Dorset Council plan to close Ringwood Road, Longham between 1st October 2019 and 4th October 2019. The road will be closed overnight between the hours of 21.00 and 06.00 but it will be open during the day and at weekends. Sections of road will be repaired within the area marked in red indicated on the map. The diversion route is marked in blue. As directed by national regulations, Dorset Council must divert traffic onto the same classification of road as the one which is being closed. In the current financial climate, the highways service has had to focus its budget on targeting the most damaged sections of road and areas with safety issues. Dorset Council will contact Ferndown Town Council again nearer the time to confirm the dates of the work and the closure needed.

Ferndown Art Society Ferndown Art Society is a group of amateur and semi-professional artists, who enjoy the company of like-minded people to exchange art skills and ideas. The Society has grown considerably in size since it was founded in 1972, but has retained its character of being a friendly group of people who enjoy art. They meet every Wednesday morning at the Barrington Centre in Ferndown. The meetings are untutored, informal meetings, where members enjoy using their own materials and working on their own projects. On the third Thursday of each month, there is a demonstration meeting with a visiting artist. These are high-quality demonstrations in a variety of media including pastels, watercolour, oils, acrylics and other mixed media, lasting about two hours with a break for coffee/tea. They are free for Society members and very popular with visitors who pay a small charge. The Ferndown Art Society is associated to the Society of All Artists and has taken part in many of their challenges and on several occasions had work reproduced in their national magazine. At the recent art exhibition at Upton Park, visitors voted for their favourite exhibit. Carol Curran won with her work called `The Guru`, which

20

was drawn using graphite pencils. Clearly many visitors enjoyed her drawing and it was considered by everyone to be a deserving winner. Anyone interested in joining please contact Sue Gomm (Membership Secretary) telephone: 01202 573050, or just come along to one of the Thursday meetings and you will be most welcome!

The Ferndown locally based Team ‘Char Char Angels’ were at the Ferndown Fete on the Field this year with their “take a teddy home” stall and they would like to thank everyone who bought a ticket from the teddy raffle. They raised an amazing £265 which goes towards Cancer Research.

Ferndown Youth Centre – Riffs Another school year nearly over and we have had our second amazing school year of being open, which I must say has flown by! We have said goodbye to some staff members who are off to pastures new and we welcomed new members of staff to the youth club. Our membership numbers have steadily increased over the past year with over 500 young people accessing our sessions in one way or another. A couple of highlights during this year include the pole joust inflatable and the ‘slip and slide’ we did during the last half term. We have a volunteer youth worker Julia, who is settling in well at the youth club, and several amazing senior members, Cameron, Eloise, Freddie and Sean who have also given of their time to help us with our year 6 youth club. Their help has been invaluable over the past couple of months and we give a big thank you to them for doing so. 26

This summer holiday will be as busy as last year with a mixture of drop in days and trips out and about, including Paintballing, Thorpe Park and Splashdown. At the youth club there will be the ‘slip and slide’ and water fights for all years and not forgetting the popular yearly end of term BBQ. The full plan for the summer holiday sessions and activities will be on the Youth Centre (Riffs) Facebook page. We are still advertising for volunteers to help with the running of the youth club sessions, if you or anyone you know are interested, please contact Aaron. All positions in the youth club have access to youth work training and everyone will be subject to an enhanced DBS check. If you would like more information regarding the youth club, please contact Aaron on 01202 874448, email aaron.fellows@ferndown.gov.uk or view the Facebook page Ferndown Youth Centre – Riffs.
