THE PILATES PRINCESS

In recent years, Pilates has grown in popularity, capturing the hearts of fashion forward women everywhere. Pilates has been developed and practiced since the 1920's, it is now more than just a workout, it's a lifestyle that blends physical fitness w mental wellness, and it's making an impact in the world of fashion.

Everyone is into Pilates at the moment. You can’t escape it - a truthfully we love it too! Pilates focuses on core strength, flexibility, and overall body awareness. Unlike high-intensity workouts that can be hard on the body, Pilates offers a lowimpact alternative that is both challenging and gentle. This makes it ideal for women looking to tone their muscles, improve posture and increase flexibility without risk of injury.

The rise of Pilates has coincided with a significant trend in activewear and athleisure fashion. As more women incorporate Pilates into their daily routines, the demand for stylish, functional workout gear has grown massively. Brands have responded with collections that are as fashionable as they are functional. Think sleek leggings, supportive sports bras, and chic tank tops that transition seamlessly from the studio to th street.

Pilates studios have become more than just places to work out: they are community hubs where like-minded individuals come together. The social aspect of Pilates cannot be overstated. Classes often foster a supportive environment where friendships are formed, and encouragement flows freely. This sense of community is particularly appealing in today's fast paced word, offering a space where women can connect, unwind and focus on their personal well being.

How to craft your OWN strawberry skin glaze smoothie...

EREWHON SMOOTHIE

BLEND the Berries

We’re using fresh AND frozen. The fresh are for the strawberry glaze and frozen is for the smoothie itself.

Cook the strawberries, date syrup, pinch of salt and splash of water. Cook until the strawberries have softened. Mash with a fork and transfer to a bowl to cool. When cool, mix in the liquid hylaronic acid.

Place the mix into a blender. Puree until smooth. Transfer your homemade strawberry glaze to a small bowl or jar.

ADD the Goodness

Add almond milk, frozen strawberries, avocado, banana, dates, collagen, sea moss gel, hyaluronic acid, and ice to a blender. Blend until smooth, adding more almond milk as needed.

ASSEMBLE the Smoothie

To assemble, spoon lines of coconut cream vertically along the inside of a glass.

Pour about 1/4 cup of the strawberry glaze made at the start into the bottom of the glass.

Pour the strawberry smoothie directly from the blender onto the strawberry glaze in the glass. Use a spoon or knife if desired to create more swirls. Enjoy immediately.

I STEREOTYPES,

PREDJUDICES AND

MISCONCEPTIONS

n the competitive world of sports, strength, speed and skill have traditionally and historically been associated with men.

However, the tides are shifting, this article will highlight the increasing number of women stepping onto these fields, courts and tracks, defying stereotypes and proving that athletic ability is genderless. From football and rugby to motorsports and boxing along with many other sports, female athletes are not only participating but excelling, breaking records and barriers. Central to this movement is 21 year old female football player, Melis Mehmet. In this exclusive interview Melis opens up about her journey, from her early beginnings to her current status as a rising star in the football world. She openly talks about the particular difficulties she has encountered as a female athlete in a male- dominated sport, as well as the stereotypes, prejudices and misconceptions she continues to confront. Melis’s interview demonstrates resilience and determination but its also about more than just the game. This interview explores her life off the pitch, her daily diet that fuels her exceptional performance as well as her distinct sense of style, proving that a football player can be both tough and fashionable.

Join us in celebrating Melis Mehmet and the many other extraordinary women who are not just competing in male- dominated sports but are leading a revolution. Their stories inspire and empower, reminding us that the world of sports is richer and more dynamic with their invaluable contributions.

Interview with Melis

Growing up in ‘football crazy’ Turkish Cypriot family in Enfield, North London, Melis Mehmet spent most of her busy childhood balancing her education and football lifestyles (with football being her priority of course!).

I kindly got invited to the Watford FC training grounds in St. Albans, Hertfordshire and caught up with good friend and footballer Melis Mehmet after an intense recovery training session.

“I ALWAYS felt quite left out when it came to the girly things”

Melis’ football journey all started at the age of 6, and this is where her passion for the sport grew. “I played in a boys football team until I was 10, growing up there wasn’t the opportunity to join a girls football team, so it was the only option I had, I was just happy I got to play the sport I love and as I was so young I didn't notice the unfairness of this .”

We then went on to discuss how nice it is to see the change of this over the years, there are many more opportunities, particularly for girls football teams in schools, preventing young girls to go through the same level of unfairness that Melis did at the very young age of only 6 years old!

“At the age of 10, my parents saw my interest and potential and took me to the trials for Arsenal’s girls youth team and I got in! It was honestly a dream come true, since then, I was at Arsenal until I was 20!”

she tells me “Arsenal is a club that’ll forever hold a special place in my heart

FITNESS & SPORT

While I leave Melis to go and finally relax after her training session, I wonder what the younger version of Melis would have made of all this and if she’d have any advice for her younger self? “Be yourself, work hard, and just ignore all the negativity.” she says. She faces the challenges

of playing in a maledominated sport with grace, determination and an unshakable belief in her abilities.

Despite the prejudices and misconceptions she encounters, Melis continues to prove that passion and talent know no gender.

and it was 11 years of my life that I will never forget”. I went on to ask Melis how it's been playing such a male- dominated sport all her life and if she’s faced any challenges because of this, if so how did she overcome them?

“There definitely have been challenges, often facing stereotypes and biases like people doubting my ability just because I'm a girl. Growing up at secondary school too, being the girl known for playing football came with positives and negatives. I’m lucky I have always been quite strong minded and was able to use those doubts as motivation, also being surrounded by my supportive family, coaches, friends and teammates helped me a lot.”

I know football takes up the majority of your time but do you have any interests outside of football? I ask. “Absolutely! I’d say its quite a recent one but I have been into fashion a lot more in the past few years then I have ever been, I’ve noticed myself experimenting more in terms with what I wear and I’d say my style has changed massively.”

“Being a girl who played football I always felt quite

left out when it came to all the girly things compared to my friends, even the little things like being the only friend not getting my nails done, and being the friend waiting for them in the nail shop”, Melis reflects “Growing up I definitely felt like I had to dress a certain way, I had that stereotypical girl footballer style, wearing only basic, not very feminine clothes, outside of training I really struggled with what to wear”.

Melis then went on to explain how her fashion sense and character has changed massively, she stated, “I’ve been in touch with my feminine side much more, getting my nails done, making an effort with my hair and actually putting some thought into what I wear.”

A FEMALE FOOTBALLERS

There are many things that go on behind the scenes of a life of a football player, one being their diet and the importance it has on their career.

Melis’ diet consists of a balance of lean proteins, complex carbohydrates and healthy fats, crucial for sustained energy and muscle recovery.

Hydration is key, with electrolytes playing a vital role in maintaining optimal

performance levels. Minerals such as sodium, potassium and magnesium, help prevent cramps and maintain fluid balance.

Incorporating plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains, ensures players get the necessary vitamins and minerals to keep their bodies in peak condition.

ELLA FASHION

TOONE’S INFLUENCE

“SEXISM doesn’t really faze us, it’s made us who we are today, and a bit TOUGHER”

Ella Toone, England’s rising women’s football star, is known for challenging and redefining fashion for females with a career in sport. Being the first generation of womens footballers with this level of exposure and popularity, players like Ella Toone often experience sexism. Along with this, her appearance and fashion choices are scrutinised. “There’s definitely a stereotype around players” says Toone, speaking to Elle magazine. “But having your nails and lashes done doesn’t mean that you can’t play football.” As a female footballer, Toone is subject to all kinds of stereotypes and opinions, however, she goes on to explain how growing up in an era without women’s football as a child has ultimately made her and the team who they are today. As she continues to openly share her style choices through interviews and social media, Ella Toone is not only inspiring and influencing the conversation, but also leading it. The perfect role model for future generations to come!

Toone is undoubtedly the most fashion-forward, stylish female on and off the pitch. Her social media presence reflects her devotion to building her dream wardrobe in addition to capturing the hearts of England fans with her football content, sharing her passion for the sport, along with giving her followers the lowdown on her latest outfits via Instagram. Her posts reflect her keen eye for trends blended with her day to day life. What more could we want?

Embracing her feminine side in a male dominated sport is a criticism that has continuously followed the lionesses, which Toone has always fought back wholeheartedly - explaining there should be no sort of stigma around this topic, especially within a career choice. Toone’s personal style does not detract from her abilities and skills on the pitch, this is something our society is learning to accept. Did you know that two-thirds of women in football have experienced gender discrimination? We still have a way to go for womens football, although progress is taking place.

Expressing her love for fashion growing and blossoming through her tennis career, Venus stresses the importance of the clothing she wears for a match. She tells British Vogue: “I truly believe that in order to perform your best, you need to feel your best. Before a match, I always think about how I’ll feel in the clothes I wear, how I’ll move in them, how they’ll support me, et cetera. What you wear is so important in tennis.” The silhouette, crafted in the Paris atelier, features embroidery from the original tennis bags along with piping and body-contouring panels for structure. This was made over the course of “hundreds of hours”, making it a true work of art to wear on the runway for Vogue World 2024.
