REIMAGINING # worldclassart This summer saw a major reinstallation of MAG’s collection of postwar and contemporary art. In the Wilson and Hawks Galleries along the first floor concourse, some four dozen works reflect director Jonathan Binstock’s expertise in the art of the era and MAG’s longstanding commitment to collecting contemporary art. The Forman Gallery at the entrance to the museum has also been transformed. It’s now a portrait gallery that hints at the treasures you’ll see throughout MAG.

The works in these two galleries reflect major changes in the art world in the years after World War II. New York—not Paris—was the center of the western art world. Long-time favorites, significant works that have been off view for years, and new acquisitions explore such themes as Fantasy, Abstraction, and the Colorfield. This fall, see a major work by pioneering American abstract painter Mark Rothko, on loan from the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo (box on p. 8).

through the Works Progress Administration. Rochester’s program—termed “the most interesting and effective outside of New York City”—was hosted by the Memorial Art Gallery and administered by then-director Gertrude Herdle Moore. Art for the People highlights a group of rarely seen, recently acquired studies by Rochester artist Carl W. Peters for thirteen WPA murals in local buildings, mainly in Rochester City School District schools. Reproductions of the murals will be displayed with the studies, along with other works by Peters and

Performing History A festival of concerts, master classes and lectures will mark the 10th anniversary of the Eastman School of Music’s Italian Baroque organ. Built around 1770, the organ’s 600 pipes were crafted to render the vocal and instrumental sonorities of its time. It was restored and installed in MAG’s Fountain Court in 2005, and is the only full-size Italian Baroque organ in North America. From October 22 through 25, internationally renowned performers and scholars will explore the importance and influence of the Italian organ and its repertoire as part of “Performing History: The Italian Baroque Organ and its Cultural Intersections,” a University of Rochester Humanities Project. All events are open to the public. Festival concerts will feature Roberto Antonello (10/22 @ 7:30 pm), Edoardo Bellotti (10/23 @ 7:30 pm), Nathan Laube with Christ Church Schola Cantorum and Publick Musick (10/24 @ 7:30 pm); and David Higgs, William Porter and Hans Davidsson (10/25 @ 5:30 pm).
