FROM MONUMENT GULCH TO FAIRFIELD AND BEYOND

It’sgettingclosetohayingtimeintheValley.Hagermanhasarichheritageofgrowingalfalfaforfeedingthecattleand sheep.Themildclimateinthevalley,along withthenaturalspringwater,makesforan idealsettingforwinteringsheep.

Growinguponasheepandcattleranch alongBillingsleycreekinthe60’swasso wonderful.Cropswereraisedtoprovide forthelivestock. Myfather,AlfredSandy, wouldwaterthehaycropsfromtheditch banks,earlyonusingsiphontubes.MysisterandIwouldpushthes-curvedlinepipes (siphontubes),intotheditchtogetthe watergoingandthenplaceeachoneatthe endofthedugoutrowsinthefieldsofalfalfa.Laterwewouldchangesprinkler pipeswhichwerethenattachedtoeach otherandlineduptowaterthefields.

Itwasabalancingacttopickupandhold thelongpipesandmovethemtothenext areatobewatered.Whatfreedomaskids wefeltasitseemedlikejustplayinginthe fields.Mydaddidn’thavetheexpectation thatwewouldworklonghours,butwe wouldlendahandhereandthere.

Inspringtimethefieldswerefreshly plantedandgrowing.Thesmellofthesoil andtheplantstouchingabluespringsky wasmagical.Wewouldrideourbikesto thefield’sedgeandeitherusethekick standstoholdthemuporjustlaydownthe bicyclesonthedirtroadandwalktothe ditchbanktobeginourtask.

Afterwards,mysisterandIwouldoftenlay onagrassyarea,facingthesky,watching somefeatherycloudsrollbyaswesucked onpiecesofgrass.Ourimaginationsran wildwatchingthecloudformationsand decidingwhatanimalorimagethefluffy shapesresembled.

MyGrandfather,JohnW.JonesSr.developedasheepbusinessintheearly1900’s. HetookthesheepfromHagermantoBliss totheCamasPrairieandovertoHillCity andthenKetchumforshippingthesheep bytraintosellinChicagomarkets.The trailingsheepjourneyovergrazinglands fromHagermanbeyondthetownofBliss

Ilovedhearingthestoriesmymom,FlorenceMary,wouldtellofhermeanderings ridingwithherfatherashecheckedonthe sheepcamps.Healsopurchasedhayfrom Fairfieldfarmersandcheckedonplacesto pastureandfeedon landsinFairfield whenhayseasonended.

Papa,mygrandfather,lovedhavinghis daughterridealonginthecartheentire familyshared.Idahointroducedthefirst driver’slicenserequirementonJuly1st, 1935.Theinitialdriverlicenseswerehandwrittenandcost50cents.Theenforcement ofthelawwasquitelax.Momwouldsometimesdriveattheage of12(1935).Her fatherwasquiterelaxedaboutlettingher takethewheel.

OnedaytheydrovenorthpastBlissand CloverCreekoverMonumentGulchto theirdestinationofHillCity.Florence Mary wasdrivingcautiouslywhenthe roadtook asharpturnbeforethecanyonwallonthe westsideandthesteepdropontheother. Unexpectedly,someCCCCamptruckswere stoppedontheleftsideofthenarrowroad nearthecanyonwall.Therewasbarely enoughroomfortheJones’scartopassby withoutrollingdownthesteepembankmenttotheright.

Assheclutchedthesteeringwheel,barely clingingtotheroad,sheclippedthetruck ontheleftdentingandscratchingthecar. Shereluctantlylookedovertoseeherfather’sreaction,hedidn’tsayaword.On downtheroadtheywent.Papahadan evendispositionandthereneverwasanotherwordspokenoftheevent.Thefamily carwasrepaired.Lifewenton.

Thefamilyfarmingconnectionsbetween theCamasPrairieandtheHagermanValley wereprofound.CamasPrairiehasalways beenknowntoproducehay.Theprairieis vastand,backintheday,thecombination ofthesnowandraindrenchingandsoaking thesoilprovidedagreatyieldofhay crops.CamasPrairiehaywasandstillis, soldtothecattleandsheepranchers aroundSouthernIdaho.MyGrandparents, EthelandJohnnyJones,madeconnections amongthesheepranchersandfarmers aroundthearea. Thefamilyoftentook drivestoscoutoutthehaypricesand checkonthesheep.

Yearslater,aftertravelingtheglobe,Imet andmarriedSteveMillerfromFairfield. Aftermeetingforthefirsttimenearly12 yearsagoandcomparingnotes,ourlives hadcrossedpathsmanytimesandyetwe metforthefirsttimeonSeptember9th, 2014.IfoundmyIdahoCountryGentleman,ananswertomymom’slifetime prayersforhermissionarydaughter.Savingthedetailsofourcourtshipandmarriageforanothertime,let’sjustsay,“It’s beenagrandadventure!”

StevehaslivedallhislifeintheprairieexceptwhenattendingtheUniversityof Idaho.Coincidentally,hetoohasraised wheatandhay,mostlyorganic.Afterour weddingatthechapelinStanley,Idaho, weallmadeourwaytothereceptionout onthefamilyranchwheremom’sfamily originallyspenttheirsummers.Itwasafull circlemomentwhenmymomspokeup exuberantlyandsaid,“Well,mydaughter, Cherylhastraveledtheglobeandnowshe islivinginFairfield,daho.”Everyone laughedandthecelebrationcontinued. SteveandIloveswappingfamilystories. It’snosurprisewhenmomwassharingthe storyofthecouplefromCorralshehad knownlongago,Stevehadknownthem too!

MyfirstgradeteacherwasMissBuntonwhoweallcalledMiss Button. Thebuildingseachhadanentrancehallwhichwaslined withhookswherewehungourcoats,tookoffourovershoesand putourlunchboxes.

Therewasnolunchroomorcafeteriasoeachstudentbrought theirownluncheitherinapaperbagorifyouwereprivilegedit wasgreattohavealunchpail. Theusualroundsyruppailwitha bailwascommon.

Outsidethelittleschoolhousewastheplaygroundwhichhada swing,merrygoround,slide,andteetertotter.Welovedplayingat recessandwhentimewasovertheteacherwouldringahandheld bell.

Thedisciplineintheroomwasalwaysstrictandveryfewevergot outoflinebecauseifonedidtherewasalwaysconsequincesto payathomewhentheparentsfoundoutaboutit.Itwasalways greattobepromotedandgotothesocalledbigschoolroomand enteringthe5thgrade.

Thisbuildingalsohadtheentranceforcoats,boots,andlunch boxes.Inthemainroomwasrowsofdesksandinfrontofthe roomwasastagewhichwasusedforprograms.

Thisbuildingwasalsousedforthecommunitychurchservices, vacationbibleschool,grangemeetingsandanyotheractivitiesthat thecommunitymighthave.Thebacksideofthisbuildingprovided abackdropfortheballfieldwheremanygameswereplayed.

Thestudentsherealsohadanallstudentsoftballteamandwe sometimesplayedothercommunityschoolsfromWestpoint,OrchardValleyandAppleton.ThesegameswereplayedonFriday afternoonanditwasalwaysfuntohaveoneoftheschoolscome toTuttle or wegoingtotheirschool.

Wemadealotoffriendsbyhavingthisactivity.Duringrecess populargameswereAnnie-I-over,RedRoverRedRover, Dodgeball,FlyingDutchman,andplayingball.

Variousschoolprogramswereheldthroughouttheyearandalwaysonthestage.Mostallholidayswerecelebrated.Christmas wasthebestbecauseofthespecialprogramandSantacoming withasackofcandyandfruitforeveryone.

BoxandPieSocialswerefrequentandalotoffun.AfterWWII endedthegrangeboughtoneofthebarracksfromtheHuntRelocationCenteranditwasmovedtotheareaandwasusedformost allofthecommunityactivities.

Saturdaynightdanceswerefrequentwithadultsdancingonthe mainlevelofthegrangehallandyoungstersdownstairsplaying. Musicwasprovidedbylocalpeoplewhocouldplaysomeinstrument,piano,guitarorwhatever.

Duringthistimethetrainwasactiveandanannualexcursionfor thestudentswastogetonthetrainandridetoJerometotourthe JeromeCooperativecreameryafterwhichtheygaveusicecream, alwaysinthoselittlepapercupswithawoodenflatspoonforeating.

ThebuswastheretobringusbacktoTuttle.Thiswasaneventwe alwayslookedforwardto.Attheendoftheschoolyeartherewas alwaysaschoolpicnicwherethewholecommunityattended.I rememberthiswasheldintheLelandandEdithBrookspasture wherehugetreesprovidedshadeandanexcellentplaceforeveryonetoplayinasoftballgame.Adultsandstudentswereallinvolvedwithotherfamilymemberscheeringeveryoneon.

The4-Hprojectswerepopularinthecommunityandattendingthe GoodingCountyFairwasalwaysahighlightoftheparticipants.

ThelastthreeyearsatTuttlewehadasthebigroomteacherMae Cunningham.ShewasaretiredPrincipalorSuperintendentofthe Fairfieldschooldistict.Shestayedattheteacherageduringthe weekandwenthometoFairfieldontheweekendsiftherewas nothinggoingonattheschool.Afterconsolidationallstudentsand activitieswerewiththeHagermanschooldistrict.

AftergraduationfromtheeightgradewethenJoinedtheHagermanfreshmanclassatthehighschool.Thefourofuswhostarted thefirstgradetogetheratTuttlewerethenamonqthegraduates whograduatedin1952fromHagerman.

Thefreewayfollowsthesamepathoftheroadalongtherailroad tracks.DemiseoftheTuttlebusinessessoonfollowedafterthe freewaywasbuilt.Thepostoffice,hardware,andmercantilestore soonclosed.Thetwoschoolhouseswereeithertorndownor moved.

LatertheMaladStateParkwascreated.Therailroadwasabandonedandthesteelrailsremovedbutremainsoftheoriginalrail roadbedcanbeseen.Formanyyearsthecommunityheldanannualpicnicbutsoonresidentsoftheareachangedandtheqettogetherwasnomore.

Todaythereareonlyafewofuswhoactuallygraduatedfromthe TuttleSchoollefttorememberwhatwasduringthattimewhen theareawasavibrantcloseknitcommunity.Thecommunityis nowpartoftheHagermanareaeventhoughitislocatedabovethe valleyrimoftheHaqermanValley.

Asweageanddepartthematerialworldalotofpasthistoryislost andonlythroughwrittendocumentscanitbefound.
