P 4, 7, 21, 26 NEW YEAR’S JOY With school still adjourned for Christmas Break, as the snow fell onto mounds of white frozen fun, and icicles of sharp glass edges hung from windowsills, one could hope for just a few more days to enjoy this winter wonderland. When Dad had the gumption to carry a load of firewood into the house to light a fire in the family room fireplace, the glow of Christmas still filled the air. The flickering flames would shine on the ornaments wrapped in garland. When the blaze danced with swirling images, one drew warmth from the flames and wondered what the next year would bring. The space between the old and new seemed calm and still as presents were put away. Family guests had left, and turkey, ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, cranberries, and yams from the previous days were served approaching New Year’s Eve. Mom had the best recipe for Clam Chowder and turkey vegetable soup. The soup would always be accompanied by her scrumptious biscuits that would almost float in the air. They were so light they would melt in your mouth with the freshly churned butter and Bradshaw’s honey on top. These delicacies became one of many New Year’s Eve family traditions. We would watch a few specials on our simple black and white TV and then, if we could stay awake long enough, to witness the New Year and join the count down from Times Square: 10, 9, 8……1. Everyone cheered to bring in the New Year hosted by Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians’ Big Band! We clinked our glasses filled with apple cider as we were a family who did not imbibe in “liquor,” as my Grandma Jones commonly referred to it. It was exciting to belong to the entire United States in ushering in a whole new year together from our farmhouse in the country three miles outside of Hagerman, Idaho, population 430. As a kid, barely able to keep my eyes open for all the excitement, I quickly scurried to throw on pajamas and topple into bed. Awakened to the sound of the TV

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS With the New Year upon us, and as we are making our New Year’s Resolutions, we can make changes in our handwriting to improve our lives. By changing your handwriting, you can retrain your brain. Examples: If you are having trouble concentrating, write smaller. Try it! As you write smaller, you will feel yourself concentrating. Do it consistently — and there you go! If you are feeling insecure and unsure of yourself, make your T-bars higher on the stem and firmer. This will give you more confidence to carry through and get the job done. And, if you are feeling depressed, your handwriting is probably slanting in a downward direction. Growing up in Hagerman Valley
P 4, 7, 21, 26 blaring the next morning with announcers describing floats made of seeds and flowers rolling down Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena, California, it was the Rose Bowl Parade! The first time RCE/NBC Broadcasted the entire parade in color was 1954. Often, we headed down to our grandparents’ home in Hagerman to view the parade as they had a color TV. Each float had been planned and designed at least a year in advance, with flowers and natural things brought in from all over the world. Thousands of locals and participants from all over the world came to join the festivities, which even if it rained the night before, the sun would shine down gloriously as the Grand Marshall led the parade. After graduating from the University of Idaho, I ventured out to work with a Christian Non-Profit Organization which eventually took me to Pasadena, California. For the first several years in Pasadena, I lived in a home with colleagues just a few yards from Colorado Boulevard, the famous parade route. Each year friends and I would reserve around 30 spots, setting up chairs the night before the parade. Dad and Mom along with others visited from Idaho to partake in the New Year’s Day festivities. Mind you, my dad grew up on a farm north of Shoshone and then joined my mom’s family ranch and farm in Hagerman after they married in 1946. Dad’s time in the Navy during World War II and other subsequent trips with Mom provided remarkable experiences. However, his 2 or 4 hours shift the night before the Rose Bowl Parade was right at the top of his list! The sights and sounds and unique individuals were a sight to behold. Unicyclists, street preachers, clowns, jugglers, and exhibitionists created a parade all their own in the middle of the night of December 31st. I can visualize the smile and laughter coming from my father’s retelling of his experience the night before the real parade. He is now partaking of far more fun and fulfillment in Heaven, but perhaps the joys of that parade experience with the colorful flowers, and delightful sights and sounds provided a glimpse of all the wonders to come. The next day was met with sunshine and joy as each float displayed an array of music, dancing, flowers, marching bands, and equestrians depicting a theme, “A Salute

Recognitionof Excellence Idaho 4-H Livestock Skill-a-Thon Team Earns National Honors Idaho’s 4-H Livestock Skill-a-thon team, representing Gooding County from Hagerman High School, competed at the National 4-H Contest in Louisville, Kentucky, on November 17, 2025. Team members Mahala Hall, Katherine Kinder, Jonah Knapp, and Saree Hillstead earned national recognition, with Idaho being called to the stage five times. Hillstead placed 16th high individual. The team earned 3rd place in Evaluation, 7th in Quality Assurance, 10th in Identification, and finished 7th overall. Thank you to the supporters and donors for helping the team get there. TWIN FALLS COUNTY COMMISSIONERS This marks my final message as a Twin Falls County commissioner and my first as the new District 25A Representative. In every role, I have aimed to lead with integrity, take a conservative, responsible approach, and prioritize the hardworking families of Twin Falls County. The accomplishments of the past nine years are the result of dedicated teamwork among fellow elected officials, county employees, and community partners. COUNTY WEST During my tenure, the County West facility has become home to a range of community-serving organizations, state agencies, non-profits, and veterans services, so that County residents can find services they need in one location. COUNTY JUSTICE SYSTEM We relocated juvenile facilities to County West to place youth services near the new juvenile justice center. We also completed a long-needed courthouse expansion—the first in nearly 30 years—and expanded the Wright Avenue law enforcement facility, recently dedicated to Deuty Henry Givens, who was killed in the line of duty in 1935. This complex houses patrol, range, investigation and evidence departments for the Twin Falls Sheriff’s Office, soon to include expanded adult detention. COUNTY FINANCES Through careful financial planning, the county has managed growth without relying on new bonds that would further burden or taxpayers. We have also strengthened employee benefits and improved overall compensation for county staff. COUNTY POLICIES We completed a major update of the county’s long-outdated comprehensive plan, providing a clearer roadmap for growth and helping ensure Twin Falls County remains a strong, welcoming place for families. P 4, 7, 21, 26 Here is a little poem I wrote that that expresses all the hope we have available to partake in for this new year. Our hope lifts high in the new year. We raise our hearts with cheer. We join our voices looking to Him He makes our outlook far less dim. To laugh, to share gratefulness in prayer whatever transpired the year before we cling to the good, we close the door to darkness and despair. Opening our hearts if we dare… to let His light shine within and without. Taking away sadness and ridding of doubt. We will see all that is glorious and all that is bright And focus on a future with sheer delight. Come all you who are heavy laden, and He will give you rest.
