GIFTED AWARENESS WEEK 13 – 19 June, 2011 Gifted children have it easy, right? Think again…Gifted teens have above average depression and suicide rates, and gifted adolescents and adults are thought to be over-represented in the prison population in later life. Many children are mis-interpreted as having ADD, ADHD or just plain naughty. And because those that don’t appear on the radar through noticeable behaviours are often left to fend for themselves, many under-achieve. What a waste! Gifted Awareness Week was established in June 2009, and in 2010 a growing number of regional and national bodies joined forces to spread the word – the ‘Awareness’ word. One group with potentially much to gain from the new NZ curriculum is the group of students described as “gifted”. With effective management, personalised learning can foster gifted students’ areas of strength and open doors to new learning. In a similar fashion, it offers opportunities to utilise teachers’ strengths, as well as challenging them to learn new strategies. Just as gifted students need support in taking up opportunities and facing challenges, their teachers also need support in providing for them. This year, the collective focus for this special week is that of advocacy alongside awareness – getting the message out that this group of children have particular learning needs, and if we believe the words of Joseph Driessen, (Principals Today, Issue #85), “Moving every student to the next step is top of the priority list for a great teacher”. ERO charges us as educators to answer this question on behalf of each and every child “How well are students learning, engaging, progressing and achieving?” Each and every – and that includes those who are already in the ‘well above’ category…where do you take them next? Professional reflection will lead teachers to acknowledge that for some students and in some curriculum areas they may need to call on expert advice, in order to move a particular student on in his or her learning. Gifted learners may well be included amongst such students. The Gifted Education Centre can offer professional support in the identification of these students, and further assistance for those learners through distance programmes or in the grouping of like-minds such as happens at One Day School™.

New research confirms that the country’s primary school principals have the opportunity to remove barriers to learning by adopting technology designed specifically for the classroom that makes it easier to hear and teach.
