THIS ISSUE IS OUR COMPANION FOR THOSE SMALL, JOYFUL DECISIONS THAT UNFOLD WITH EVERY WEDDING. WE OPEN WITH A SHOOT PROVING THAT DESIGNER-LEVEL BRIDAL AND A LIGHTER FOOTPRINT CAN SHARE THE SAME HANGER, THANKS TO A BOUTIQUE REWRITING THE RULES OF HOW A GOWN IS FOUND.
From there we follow love offshore, barefoot ceremonies in Fiji and Rarotonga, and a grand celebration under one Auckland roof, before coming home to the details that make a day yours: the rings worth saying yes to, the fabric-flower trend turning ceremonies into couture, and a 12-month countdown to keep it all calm.
We've also gathered the gentle, honest advice we wish every couple heard early: how to actually capture the day, the small regrets worth avoiding, and how to look after yourself when the moment finally arrives. DRESS WITH PURPOSE
The boutique changing what bridal looks like.
Walk into Olivia Rose Bridal and something immediately feels different. There's no pressure, no clipboard, no stranger measuring your waist before you've even sat down. Instead, there's a choice, right from the beginning.
Brides can select from two appointment packages: one that includes a little something to sip and celebrate with, and one that keeps things simple. Either way, what follows is a conversation. Intentional. Unhurried. Entirely about you.
That's by design. This is not a traditional bridal appointment. It's what founder Karien has built from the ground up: a curated experience that blends luxury styling with image consultancy.
"This isn't about finding a dress. It's about finding yourself in a dress — and those are two very different things."
Beautiful, accessible, and built with a lighter footprint, Olivia Rose Bridal has thoughtfully curated a collection of pre-loved gowns alongside sample dresses from five internationally recognised designer brands.
The maths make sense too. With gowns ranging from $250 to $2,900 and inclusive sizing from 6 to 28 in-store, Olivia Rose Bridal has dismantled the idea that sustainable or designer-level bridal comes with a luxury price tag. Both paths lead to the same destination: a bride who feels extraordinary.

Hometown weddings
WRITTEN BY BEN O’CONNELL
As the saying goes, don’t forget your roots. And many couples are opting to get married in their hometowns. But the trend of urban dwellers going rural to tie the knot isn’t unfounded.
I’ve attended a few. The small, intimate church saw that sense of connection and community form instantly. Sunlight streamed through the stained-glass windows, steeped in a long history. The vows were heard clearly and naturally by the person sitting in the back corner. These events were deeply sentimental.
It also might allow family and friends to gather more easily. Couples might be able to include extended family and childhood friends that they otherwise couldn’t. Some couples also want to honour their roots and community, celebrating milestones where their families and friends have. It also means you’re supporting local.
Smaller towns or rural areas have a certain charm. Consider a rustic venue, a unique landscape, a more relaxed atmosphere, and a humility that other wedding locations mightn’t have.
Thinking back to the rural weddings I attended, both reception spaces were operated by locals; one, the town hall, the other, a bed and breakfast lodge. At both venues, every little hiccup was immediately handled. There was a huge community spirit with all hands on deck to ensure the day went smoothly.
To know your village is rallying behind you is something money cannot buy.
Hometown weddings can make it easier to host multi-day events like rehearsal dinners, welcome parties, post-wedding brunches, and family gatherings all in one place, as I saw at two rural weddings where families connected across a peaceful weekend celebration.
Don’t get me wrong, a city wedding can be incredibly sentimental and see your community unite. And, of course, hometown weddings can also bring challenges, like a larger guest list, logistical nightmares, and less spectacle. So, maybe a hometown wedding is right for you. It’ll be a celebration that feels grounded in where your story began, surrounded by the people and places that shaped it.

Videographer or content creator?
HOW TO DECIDE AND WHO TO CHOOSE
Weddings today are documented in more ways than ever before. Alongside traditional photography and videography, a newer role has entered the mix: the content creator. While both capture the day as it unfolds, they do so with very different intentions, tools, and outcomes.
A wedding videographer is focused on storytelling. Their job is to document the day in a way that can be watched again years later and still feel emotionally complete.
This typically involves professional cameras, stabilisation equipment, external audio recording, and a detailed editing process. Nothing is rushed. Every clip is reviewed, colour-graded, and shaped into a narrative.
Rather than simply recording events as they happen, videographers think in structure. The day is built into a story with a beginning, middle, and end, from getting ready to the ceremony, speeches, and first dance. Couples tend to receive a short, cinematic highlight film, a longer documentary-style edit, and full coverage of key moments such as the ceremony and speeches. The final product is designed to last.
A wedding content creator works in a completely different space. Their focus is not long-form storytelling, but fast, social-first content that reflects the energy of the day as it happens. Most content creators use smartphones or lightweight digital tools, prioritising mobility and discretion. This allows them to capture candid, behind-the-scenes moments that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Instead of carefully staged shots or structured storytelling, the emphasis is on emotion, movement, and spontaneity. Typical content includes vertical videos for Instagram and TikTok, short candid clips of guests and bridal parties, behind-the-scenes moments during getting ready, quick emotional reactions and interactions and trend-based edits with music overlays.

The biggest difference is turnaround time. Content is often delivered within 24–72 hours, sometimes even on the same day, allowing couples to relive and share moments almost immediately.
At the heart of the distinction is purpose. A videographer is building a carefully edited film designed to be watched in full. A content creator is capturing moments designed to be experienced quickly and shared easily. One is reflective. The other is immediate. One prioritises narrative structure. The other prioritises authenticity and speed. Neither approach replaces the other! They simply serve different emotional needs.
In recent years, many couples have started booking both a videographer and a content creator. This is not about replacing one with the other, but about capturing two different versions of the same day.
A videographer may miss small, fleeting interactions while focusing on lighting, framing, and audio. A content creator, meanwhile, is often capturing those exact moments in real time: the laughter between speeches, quiet reactions, or behind-the-scenes energy. Together, they offer a more complete picture.
Which one do you actually need? Well, the answer depends on what matters most to you. If your priority is a timeless, professionally edited film that tells the full story of your wedding day, a videographer is essential. If you value immediacy, social media sharing, and seeing candid moments you may have missed, a content creator adds something different and complementary.
Weddings are captured through multiple perspectives, each highlighting something different. The videographer creates the lasting narrative. The content creator captures the lived experience in real time. They don’t compete; instead, both expand how the day is remembered.

Flowers out, fabric in?
For years, wedding flowers followed a familiar formula. Fresh roses, white peonies, eucalyptus runners and carefully arranged bouquets dominated bridal magazines and Pinterest boards.
Now, couples are replacing traditional florals with fabric-based alternatives, and what once may have been dismissed as ‘fake flowers’ is now becoming one of the biggest style movements in modern weddings.
Fabric florals aren’t trying to imitate real flowers perfectly. Instead, they lean into texture, fashion and artistry. Oversized organza roses, ribbon bouquets, crochet flowers, tulle installations and sculptural fabric petals are appearing in weddings that feel more like couture editorials than traditional ceremonies.
Part of the appeal comes from weddings becoming more fashion-focused and less traditional. Fabric flowers fit naturally into that aesthetic because they create softness, movement and drama in a way fresh flowers sometimes cannot.
Social media has also accelerated the trend. Weddings inspired by runway styling and luxury campaigns are dominating feeds, and textile-heavy floral designs photograph incredibly well. The look feels romantic, but also slightly surreal and modern.
Sustainability is another reason the movement is gaining traction. Unlike fresh flowers, fabric arrangements can also be reused, repurposed or resold after the wedding. Traditional florals often involve refrigerated transport, imported flowers, foam structures and waste.
Fresh flowers come with a cost, especially imported blooms and large-scale installations. Fabric alternatives put elaborate floral arches or suspended ceiling arrangements within reach. Large fabric installations can hang from ceilings, wrap around staircases, or flow through reception spaces, almost like wearable art.
But the trend is not replacing fresh flowers completely. Hybrid weddings are becoming common, where real greenery and blooms are mixed with fabric statement pieces. The result often feels softer, more layered, less rigidly traditional.
The stigma around faux flowers has changed, too. High-quality fabric florals now look artistic rather than like imitations. Often, guests don’t realise parts aren’t real until they look closely.
Fabric flowers aren’t replacing flowers, but are redefining what a floral moment can be. Express yourself how you see fit: sculptural, expressive, and unbound by season or stem.

The intimacy effect
Destination weddings often feel more intimate, not just because of guest numbers, but because of psychology and environment working together.
When people travel for a wedding, there’s a sense of shared investment. Guests have committed time, money, and energy to be there, which naturally deepens emotional presence. That commitment filters out obligation and leaves a group that genuinely wants to participate, not just attend.
Being in a new location also reduces social fragmentation. At home weddings, guests split off into familiar circles. At a destination, everyone eats, stays, and explores in the same space. That repetition builds familiarity quickly, creating a temporary micro-community where interactions feel more personal and continuous.
There’s also the effect of novelty. The brain encodes unfamiliar environments more vividly, which heightens emotional memory. Every conversation, ceremony, and shared meal feels more significant because it’s happening outside the normal routine.
For the couple, this creates a rare kind of attention. Without competing social obligations or quick exits, guests are more present. The result isn’t just a wedding that feels smaller, but one that feels closer, slower, and more emotionally concentrated.

Cordis Auckland
UNDER ONE ROOF
There’s a particular ease to marrying in a hotel: the ceremony, the dinner, the dancing, the bed at the end of the night and breakfast the next morning all happen behind one set of doors. Cordis, on Symonds Street near the top of the city, is built for it: a 642-room landmark that can hold a wedding that most standalone venues can’t.
The hotel has 20 event spaces, which is really the point of it; there’s a room to fit the guest list rather than a guest list trimmed to fit the room. The grandest is the Great Room, one of Auckland’s largest pillarless ballrooms, 1,160 square metres under 33 chandeliers, seating 800 for dinner, 1,000 standing, or a ceremony of up to 900, and dividing into four when the numbers are smaller.
The Crystal Room seats 200, with its own foyer for pre-dinner drinks and room for a dance floor. Higher up, in the 17-storey Pinnacle Tower, the Jade Room seats 210 behind full-length windows and opens onto an outdoor terrace; and on the 10th floor, Vista takes around 50 with the skyline laid out beyond the glass. Between them, the rooms cover most of the shapes a wedding takes.
The food is built with the kitchen rather than chosen off a fixed list, worked around dietary needs and matched with wine, beer and other pairings, and a dedicated coordinator carries the planning from the first enquiry through to the day itself.

The accommodation is the discreet advantage. With 642 rooms and suites, your guests stay where the wedding is, and the Heartfelt package settles the two of you into a suite for the night with breakfast in the Club Lounge the next morning. The Chuan Spa, the pool, and a handful of restaurants and bars - Eight’s buffet, cocktails at Our Land, afternoon tea in the Chandelier Lounge - along with a club lounge looking out over the skyline, tend to absorb the days on either side.
It’s a practical kind of appeal, and an underrated one. Clients are assigned a dedicated event planner who will support them from the initial enquiry through to the completion of the event. With the ceremony, celebration, accommodation and recovery all under one roof, the only journey left at the end of the night is the lift ride upstairs.

Staying healthy on your wedding day
WRITTEN BY BEN O’CONNELL
I recently attended a wedding where the groom fainted during his vows. It illustrated two things. The first was that his loved ones truly were there to support him on his big day; the immediate care he received was heart-warming. Second, don’t forget to take care of yourself on your wedding day.
We can get lost in logistics and forget to prioritise feeling healthy and confident. It starts by building habits that support your mind and body in the weeks before the wedding. Drink plenty of water, eat nutrient-dense foods, move regularly, and prioritise sleep. Mind you, this is good advice whether or not you’re a fiancée.
One bride-to-be told me her main health focus has been her skincare. She’s routinely exfoliating and taking collagen supplements. “I will be eating and drinking a lot on the day. It’s a long day. You’ve got to have your sustenance,” she says. Whether it’s skincare, meditation, or light exercise, small, manageable routines like this make a big difference in maintaining overall wellbeing.
Even with careful preparation, sickness can strike. If you start feeling unwell in the days before the wedding, prioritise rest, hydration, and nourishing foods. Over-the-counter medications can help relieve mild symptoms like congestion or sore throats, but listen to your body and don’t push too hard. Good hygiene and health practices can slip during a busy wedding season, so try to maintain handwashing, balanced meals, and adequate rest.
The day of the wedding itself requires attention to both physical and emotional wellbeing. Begin with a balanced breakfast that includes protein and complex carbs to keep your energy steady. Stay hydrated, and keep a small kit of water, mints, and light snacks nearby. Between photos, ceremonies, and social interactions, take a few moments to pause, breathe, and ground yourself; even a couple of deep breaths can help calm nerves and keep you present. Avoid excessive caffeine or skipping meals, which can worsen anxiety and fatigue.
Lean on your support team. Delegating small tasks to your partner, wedding party, or family members allows you to focus on enjoying the day. Accept that minor hiccups like a lost shoe or a delayed schedule are part of the experience. A Halloween bride I spoke to learned this the hard way: “I had a full bottle of port before my wedding. I recall taking the microphone and apologising to my in-laws for being drunk. It was the nerves.”
Remember that wellbeing isn’t just physical, it’s emotional too. Celebrate the moments, laugh with your partner, and immerse yourself in the joy of the day. Taking care of yourself before and during the wedding ensures you can stay calm, confident, and present, creating memories you and your loved ones will cherish forever.

Four little things
MODERN TAKES ON THE OLD WEDDING RHYME
"Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue." The rhyme has been whispered to brides for generations, but you don't have to follow it the way your grandmother did. Each line is really just a prompt for a small, meaningful detail, and the modern versions are lovely.
Something old
Is about continuity: carrying a piece of your history into the day. It might be a grandmother's brooch pinned inside your bouquet, a locket with a family photo, or a handkerchief that's been to three weddings before yours. No heirloom to hand? A favourite perfume you've worn for years counts just as well.
Something new
Marks the fresh start. Traditionally the dress, but it can be anything bought for this chapter; your shoes, a piece of jewellery, even the vows you've written from scratch. The point is simply to mark the beginning of something.
Something borrowed
Meant to carry a little luck from a happy marriage into yours. Borrow earrings from a long-married friend, a veil from your mum, or a sentiment rather than an object — a reading borrowed from a couple you admire. It's a quiet way of saying you're not doing this alone.
Something blue
Once stood for fidelity and love. It hides easily: blue thread stitched into a hem, painted toenails, a ribbon around the bouquet stems, or a sapphire somewhere on your hand. Some couples skip the hiding altogether and lean into a blue palette.
Make it yours
There's no rule that says you need all four, or that they must be objects at all. Some couples reinterpret the whole rhyme: something handmade, something local, something that made you laugh. Others add a fifth for luck, the old “sixpence in her shoe”.
The charm of these small traditions isn't superstition; it's the way they fold the people you love into a single day. Choose the ones that mean something, skip the ones that don't, and let the details quietly tell your story.

Common wedding day regrets 8
WRITTEN BY BEN O'CONNELL
No wedding day is completely perfect. Something runs late, someone forgets something, the weather changes, or a tiny detail doesn’t go to plan. Most couples understand that.
But when people look back on their wedding later, the regrets usually aren’t about the cake flavour or chair covers. They tend to be about moments missed, pressure they didn’t need, or choices that made the day harder than it had to be.
1 We barely spent any time together
This is probably the most common regret of all. Couples spend months planning a wedding only to realise afterwards they were pulled in completely different directions most of the day. One person is talking to relatives, the other is dealing with vendors, photos, speeches, or timelines. Before they know it, the night is over.
The fix is simple: intentionally schedule time together. That might mean a private drink after the ceremony, sneaking away for ten minutes during sunset photos, travelling to the venue together, or having a quiet meal before guests enter the reception.
2 The day went too fast
Almost everyone says this afterwards. Weddings move at a strange speed. You spend months thinking about it, then suddenly the ceremony is over, and the last song is playing.
A packed timeline makes this worse. Couples often underestimate how long everything takes. The best way to slow the day down is to build breathing room into the schedule rather than running minute-by-minute.
3 We spent too much money on things nobody noticed
Many couples realise they put huge chunks of budget into details that barely registered on the day. Guests remember atmosphere, food, music, and how the couple felt, not the exact font on signage.
Styling matters, but sometimes couples prioritise how a wedding looks online rather than how it feels in person. Ask whether each decision genuinely improves the experience.
4 I stressed about tiny things that didn’t matter
Most guests never notice what couples panic about: a missing flower arrangement, a late shuttle, uneven tables, or wind during photos. Guests are simply enjoying themselves.
Weddings are live events with variables. Protect what matters and let smaller things go.
1 5 We tried to please too many people Family pressure creates a lot of regret. Inviting guests out of guilt or changing plans to avoid upset can make the day feel less personal. You cannot make everyone happy.
6 We didn’t eat enough It sounds ridiculous until it happens. Couples often forget to eat. Assign someone to ensure food and water are actually consumed during the day.
7 We invited people we barely talk to now Big guest lists can lead to regret. Weddings become more meaningful when surrounded by people who genuinely matter.
8 We forgot to be present
This is the regret underneath almost all others. Couples get caught in logistics and forget to experience it. Taking small pauses to look around often creates the strongest memories.
